SCI Master's Thesis Guide 2023-
- Recommendation for submitting the final version of the thesis to your supervisor for evaluation = Please discuss about the submission with your supervisor beforehand and take possible holidays into account when planning on the schedule. Submit the final version of the thesis to your supervisor for evaluation according the recommended schedule. The supervisors need time to read, evaluate and write the statements of the theses.
- Deadlines for submitting applications 2023 = The administrative deadlines are for submitting applications for 1) thesis topic, supervisor and advisor approval application, 2) submitting the thesis for evaluation for administration and 3) submitting request for graduation.
- Degree Programme Committee meetings = The DPC meetings approves the thesis topics and final master' thesis.
What I have to take into account regarding the deadlines?
- It is not possible to submit a thesis topic approval and final thesis for evaluation at the same time. Thesis topic must have been approved in a DPC meeting before and valid when submitting the thesis for evaluation. Thesis topic approval is the starting point for working on your thesis. Send thesis topic approval document as soon as you have agreed with the topic with your supervisor.
- It is possible to submit a final thesis for evaluation and apply for graduation at the same time. Please remember to keep your supervisor informed, and to leave enough time (4 weeks) for the supervisor to read the final thesis and write a statement.
- Take possible holidays (summer, winter) into account when planning on the schedule , e.g. on giving the thesis presentation and submitting the final thesis to your supervisor for evaluation!
- When you are planning to submit your thesis for evaluation, consider the deadlines according to your graduation and study right. You need to be present as a student when applying for thesis evaluation. This is critical especially at the end of semesters in July and December.
What happens after the DPC meetings?
- Thesis topic application: Approximately a few workdays after the DPC meeting you'll get an automated e-mail from eAge of an accepted thesis topic application.
- Graduation request: Approximately a week after the DPC meeting all the graduation requests will be registered in Sisu.

More leptospirosis cases occur after floods, study shows
by K. W. Wesselink, University of Twente
A recent study, published by researchers at the Faculty of ITC in the International Journal of Health Geographics , has shown that flooding leads to increased leptospirosis cases.
First author, John Ifejube is a recent graduate of the master's program in Spatial Engineering. This publication is a direct result of his thesis on GeoHealth.
Flooding is a climate-related disaster that impacts not only the environment but also the well-being of people. Leptospirosis is a blood infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira. People become infected through interaction with contaminated water or urine.
Infected humans can get headaches, muscle pains, and fevers, but severe forms can lead to kidney failure. More and more studies link the spread of leptospirosis with floods, but it has not been extensively studied, until now.
Master's thesis
For his master's thesis, Ifejube conducted a study on the association between the incidence of leptospirosis and the occurrence of multiple floods in Kerala, India. He found that flooding leads to an increase in leptospirosis cases. His study reveals that flood duration is the most important characteristic of floods that can be used to predict the number of infections. According to his research, severe floods lead to more leptospirosis cases than moderate floods.
He compared leptospirosis cases across three different years in time and space. Specifically, he compared the number of cases in 2018 and 2019, which were years with heavy and moderate flooding respectively, to the number of cases in 2017, a year that did not experience any floods.
For each flood year, he looked at the reported cases three months before, during and three months after the flood. To assess the severity of floods, he determined the population exposed to each flood event using high-resolution satellite images. Finally, he used spatial regression to examine the relationship between post-flood cases and flood extents.
