The Creative Education Institute (CEI) was founded in 1992 as a 501(c)(3) by Chairman John Kusik and President Carole Richards.  Since CEI’s inception, all funds raised have gone directly to the projects it has decided to support.

The mission of the Creative Education Institute is to effect change through improved literacy.

Through Carole’s success with her for-profit tutoring company, North Coast Education Services  (NCES), she sought to provide education services to low-income children and adults in the Greater Cleveland area.  NCES provides office space, phones, equipment, office supplies, and support staff to CEI at no cost.

A Rousing Success

Richards learning systems® literacy "game-changer" video project, teacher training programs, academic fun & fitness camp, a to z welfare to work program.

The Creative Education Institute has partnered with CEO Eric Gordon of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to develop the Richards Learning Systems® (RLS) literacy project.  Twenty-seven kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms will participate in the initial project.

Richards Learning Systems® blends a cost-effective and time-efficient teacher training program with teachable and effective reading program for children.  The program is currently in development with the intent to launch in 2017.

Learn the history behind Richards Learning Systems®.

CEI developed and operated the Academic Fun & Fitness Camp  in Kirtland, OH.  The camp served campers ages 6 to 19 with learning disabilities.  The camp included morning multi-sensory reading and math skill development.  In the afternoon, campers participated in a wide variety of activities to develop social skills — including theatre arts, hands-on science activities, art and music therapy, martial arts, sports and much more.

The unique and well-respected six-week camp was developed in 2000.  Parents and school districts recognized the program as a special place where kids could improve skills, have fun, and be “just kids”.  Every year through generous financial support, CEI was able to provide partial camp scholarships to qualified campers.

As CEI expanded its development of the Richards Learning Systems® project, it was decided that there was not enough time to effectively run both programs.  Therefore, in January 2018, CEI decided to close the doors of the Academic Fun & Fitness Camp after 16 successful summers.

The Creative Education Institute has successfully trained teachers in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Bedford City School District, and Euclid City School District.  In addition, CEI has trained individual teachers from many districts and parochial and private schools.

A research study was conducted by CEI on the effects of basic skills training in nine Cleveland companies.  Many workers participated in the interview and assessments process and each company ran multiple classes.

Research studies from Bedford, Euclid, and the Cleveland companies are available upon request.

CEI developed and ran the A to Z Welfare to Work Program for four and one-half years, successfully employing 75% of its participants for more than one year.  (This is statistically significant because a larger program — with a $12 million budget — employed only 12 people for just six months.)

The A to Z Welfare to Work Program included reading and math skills, life skills, social skills and work experience.  Participants were guaranteed jobs at the end of an internship by the company where they interned.

This program was featured in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s  Best Practices   M agazine for welfare reform.  One of its foundation funders replicated the program in New England because it was so successful and unique.

Accelerated Learning

Award-winning students.

creative education inc

For over 30 years, Creative Education Institute ® has produced innovative learning solutions that enable people with educational differences to achieve academic, social and professional success. Throughout that time, we recognized the same thing most educators do…. The average learner gains one year academically for each year of instruction. Struggling students, however, often fail to gain half a year academically. Consequently, the child who has multiple challenges when he starts kindergarten may be up to five years behind his peers by fifth grade.

Intervening as early as possible can prevent many challenges, but students who are already behind need more than therapy alone. They also need accelerated learning. CEI ® students gain an average of 1.6 years for each year of instruction; more than a third gain two years or more. This means the same struggling kindergarten student won’t just catch up with his peers by the end of second grade. By third grade, he’ll surpass them.

With younger children, you can never start too early; for older students who are struggling, you cannot wait!

Other Ways to Support CEF

The Norman and Elaine Polsky Family Supporting Foundation established an endowed fund for the benefit of the Creative Education Foundation in 2004.  The Polsky’s initiated a $12,500 challenge to the CEF community, which contributed to and helped secure this endowment, the interest from which supports creative education programming.

Norman Polsky served as a Marine in World War II.  While stationed in Los Angeles, he met his future bride, Elaine, and proposed after only two dates.  Norman believed the benefits of philanthropy are circular, as each individual is a benefactor as well as a beneficiary.  The Polsky Family Supporting Foundation (PFSF) was established in December 1990 and currently has 50 endowments.

CEF is proud to celebrate Norman Polsky’s philanthropic legacy by investing in deliberate creativity education.

University of the Arts to lose accreditation, becoming second Philadelphia art institution to close this year

By Frederick Sinclair

Updated on: June 5, 2024 / 1:24 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –  The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) announced on Friday that it will withdraw the accreditation of the University of the Arts effective June 1. This decision comes after the university failed to properly notify MSCHE of its unplanned imminent closure.

The closure of the University of the Arts is another loss for the city's art schools. Earlier this year, the  Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)  announced it would end its degree programs at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

MSCHE decided to strip the institute of its accreditation due to not complying with the Commission's requests for written reports, teach-out plans and more.

The University of the Arts must now notify the university community, including students, staff and governing board members of the status of the institution.

The institution is also required to manage student and alumni records, as well as, provide transcripts at no cost to those seeking to transfer.

UArts posted on Facebook Friday night saying:

"This is a heartbreaking day. University of the Arts will close as of Friday, June 7, 2024. On Monday, June we will host separate town hall meetings for students, faculty, and staff; we will send times and details for those town halls over the coming weekend. We care committed to providing a space for your questions and concerns."

The university is still expected to submit a completed teach-out plan by June 7 to ensure students can complete their education. Failure to comply with these requirements could lead to further actions by the MSCHE.

MSCHE has highlighted multiple areas of noncompliance, including issues with the university's financial sustainability, educational effectiveness, and the student learning experience.

Pennsylvania State Representative Ben Waxman posted on X about the university's closure.

Devastated to hear about the closure of the UArts. This abrupt decision will impact hundreds in our community who work and study at UArts. We will be demanding answers as to the events that led to this shocking and sudden decision. Our office is here to support all the students… — Rep. Ben Waxman (@RepBenWaxman) May 31, 2024

The commission also emphasized the university's inadequate communication and failure to obtain necessary approvals for its planned closure.

The University of the Arts can appeal the decision through the Commission's Appeals from Adverse Actions Procedures before June 7.

Editor's note: This article has been updated with clarified information about PAFA's degree programs.
