2024-25 Academic Catalog

Doctor of philosophy in civil engineering, civil, environmental, and architectural engineering.

Civil engineering is the oldest engineering program at KU. The first graduating class in 1873 included a civil engineer. Civil engineers design roads, water systems, bridges, dams, and other structures, providing nearly all the infrastructure needed by modern society. Civil engineers were the first engineers to address environmental issues and are the lead engineering discipline in treating water supplies to protect public health. In recognition of the significant issues concerning the environment, the department name was changed in 1992 to civil and environmental engineering.

The environmental and water resources engineering (EWRE) and environmental and water resources science (EWRS) graduate programs were created in 2019 by combining existing programs in environmental engineering and science and water resources engineering. These programs dated back to the founding of the Environmental Health Sciences program in 1961. Environmental and water resources engineers and scientists address the safety and supply of water, the interactions of water and the hydrological cycle with the environment, and the use of physical, chemical, and biological processes to solve environmental and water problems.

Architectural engineering combines study in architecture with engineering science and design courses in electrical, mechanical, construction, and structures to prepare students for building design projects of all kinds. Architectural engineering dates to 1913 at KU, and the first female graduate of the School of Engineering was an architectural engineering major. Architectural engineering merged with civil and environmental engineering in 2001 to form the the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE).

CEAE’s mission is to provide students with an outstanding engineering education and be a leader in research and service. This mission is supported by the following 3 goals:

  • Prepare students for productive engineering careers.
  • Maintain and grow strong research programs.
  • Serve the profession.

Graduate Admission

The department admits for all semesters. Students may pursue degrees full or part time. An ABET-accredited baccalaureate degree in engineering is required for admission to the Ph.D. degree programs in civil engineering and environmental & water resources engineering; a baccalaureate degree in a closely related field is required for admission to the Ph.D. program in environmental & water resources science. Applicants are expected to have undergraduate grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for admission.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required and are used in the evaluation process, but minimum scores for admission have not been established. The GRE engineering and other subject examinations are not required. The Test of English as a Foreign Language is required for international applicants. Applicants should take the GRE and TOEFL examinations as early as possible to expedite the admission process.

Graduate applications should be submitted  online .

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Fall Admission : December 1 (priority deadline). Applications received past the priority deadline are considered on the basis of rolling review, until two business days before the start of classes.

Spring Admission : September 1 (priority deadline). Applications received past the priority deadline are considered on the basis of rolling review, until two business days before the start of classes.

Summer Admission : December 1

The priority deadlines are for full consideration for fellowships, scholarships and research/teaching assistantships. Applications submitted after these deadlines will be considered for funding on a case-by-case basis.

MINIMUM ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

Visit the full English Proficiency Requirements for Admission to Graduate study at:  http://policy.ku.edu/graduate-studies/english-proficiency-international-students .

International students and students who indicated English as a second language are required to show proof of English proficiency for admission purposes and must check-in at the  Applied English Center  (AEC) upon arrival on campus for orientation. This process serves to confirm each student's level of English proficiency and determine whether English courses will be included as a requirement of the student’s academic program. Note: Students who demonstrate English proficiency  at the waiver level  are not required to check in at the AEC (see eligibility requirements on the Graduate Studies  website ).

VISITING US

The graduate program staff is happy to work with all prospective students in determining the fit between the student and the program. We feel that visiting our campus in Lawrence is a very important step. In order to facilitate your visit to KU, there are two main options:

The first, and most preferred, option entails simply applying for admission to the program. All prospective students are welcome to attend our Graduate Open House in mid-October or mid-March. Eligible admitted students may be invited to participate in Campus Visit Days in February (prior to the fall semester of your intended matriculation). These organized visitation opportunities will allow you to gather a great deal of first-hand information which we hope will help you in making a final decision about whether to attend KU.

The second option is making arrangements to visit us on your own, outside of organized events. With early notification, we will do our best to work with you to provide information and schedule appointments with faculty when possible. Please contact us if you feel that this is the best option for you.

CONTACT INFORMATION

Please contact the CEAE Graduate Program Coordinator at  [email protected]  or (785) 864-3826, to schedule a visit or with questions about the application process.

Ph.D. Degree Requirements

Candidates for the Ph.D.degree must satisfy the University's general requirements for the degree.  A Plan of Study must be approved by the student’s major professor, examining committee, and departmental graduate studies committee.

An aspirant for the Ph.D. degree must pass a qualifying examination. The department normally gives this examination upon completion of the aspirant’s M.S. work or at a comparable level for non-M.S. students.

Before being admitted to the comprehensive examination, the aspirant must satisfy the research skill, residency, and responsible scholarship requirements for the degree.  The research skill requirement provides the aspirant with a research skill distinct from, but strongly supportive of, the dissertation research. One research skill is required. Possible research skills include foreign language, computer science, mathematics, statistics, specific laboratory skills, and specific skills in the physical or biological sciences. The foreign language skill can be obtained by taking a 2-course sequence in the selected language or demonstrated by passing an examination. The selected research skill must be listed on the Plan of Study form. A separate statement attached to the Plan of Study must list the work to be completed to obtain the research skill. The responsible scholarship requirement serves to ensure that students are trained in responsible research practices and is fulfilled by attending a Responsible Scholarship Training Seminar offered each fall semester.

All graduate students must have an approved Plan of Study on file by the beginning of their second semester of study.

Regardless of the timeline, the work students put into these PhD programs is usually intensely focused and in-depth. It can be important for students to consider how much time they want to commit to earning an online PhD when choosing an engineering program. See an example of what to expect during the application process and a sample four-year track timeline below.

Application Process

Because online engineering PhD programs typically cover a wide range of course material, students should investigate particular areas of interest and faculty members they want to work with when deciding where to apply. They may need to demonstrate both their interest and their previous knowledge to be admitted into an online PhD in engineering program.

Bachelor’s Degree and Official Transcripts

Applicants are often required to have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in engineering or a related area, through an accredited institution. Programs may ask to see official transcripts from all higher learning institutions that an applicant attended and may have minimum GPA requirements.

Previous Experience and Demonstrated Competence in Chosen Area

Applicants interested in pursuing a PhD in a hands-on engineering field like mechanical or hardware engineering may need to provide proof that they have experience in their field. Previous experience is usually submitted in a résumé, but may be required in a larger essay or in a program’s application.

Statement of Purpose

Online engineering programs may ask an applicant to write a statement of purpose that addresses why a student chose a particular program and elaborates on their ability to do advanced research; demonstrates their knowledge, passion, experience and skill; and notes an intended area of study.

Personal Statement

In addition to a résumé and a statement of purpose, programs may ask for a personal statement which may explore an applicant’s history and life experience and address what an applicant would like to get out of pursing an online PhD in engineering.

Individual programs may require applicants to demonstrate minimum scores in the math and verbal areas of the GRE from exams taken within a certain number of years.

Year 1 Milestones

Students may enter online PhD programs with a clear idea of which engineering department they will work in. However, the first year in an online PhD in engineering program is generally spent learning about each possible area of study and often serves to deepen research skills and technical experience.

Core Requirement Courses

Online engineering doctoral degree programs typically have a core series of classes that introduce students to basic engineering concepts like modeling technologies, common systems management principles and the economics of engineering.

Exploring Facility Possibilities

Though students in online PhD programs often do not learn in on-site labs, some programs offer facilities via satellite for distance learning students. Students interested in practical aspects of engineering, such as mechanical or computer engineering, may need to find places to gain tangible experience.

Selecting an Area of Specialization

Students generally will need to decide to pursue a narrowed course of engineering study by the end of their first year. Common specializations may include the theories and ethics of engineering; management and engineering; or civil, mechanical or computer engineering.

Years 2 and 3 Milestones

Students may spend a lot of time investigating their chosen field before finding an area that suits them. Some online PhD in engineering programs allow as many as six years before a student must propose a dissertation topic, and students can often spend that time building up their experiences and knowledge before completing their degree.

Specializing Further

Students who may not have begun their engineering program knowing exactly what they wanted to study will usually narrow their focus in their second year, choosing specific aspects of their chosen engineering specialization to explore more in-depth.

Refinement of Research Practices

Throughout an online engineering PhD program, students will typically design projects and conduct research within their fields, refine their approaches and execution techniques, and accept feedback from advanced faculty.

Approach Faculty Advisors

Students may choose online engineering doctoral programs based on possible areas of specialization and the faculty who work in these areas. As they work toward an original project for their dissertation, students may need to select an engineering faculty advisor in their field and begin discussions about this final academic work.

Qualifying Exam

A qualifying examination is usually delivered by engineering faculty members familiar with a student’s chosen field of study. It may include an oral component in addition to a written test. The exam is meant to determine each student’s ability to apply general concepts and methods in their chosen field. Students may also have to complete a research proposal exam before beginning work on their engineering dissertation.

Year 4 Milestones

The final year of an online PhD in engineering student’s degree is often spent working on their dissertation. All core class requirements and electives are usually completed by this time, allowing students time to focus on this final project.

Dissertation Preparation

Dissertations will likely address an aspect of engineering that could be improved upon or altered in some way. This project is generally an example of how a student will contribute to their engineering field.

Scheduling Final Exam and Dissertation Defense

Online PhD in engineering programs may ask for certain scheduling applications or dissertation draft submissions before a student attempts to earn their engineering degree. These application and submission deadlines may be as many as three months out.

Graduation Requirements

Online engineering PhD students who have completed all of their coursework to their instructors’ satisfaction will often be well-prepared to deliver their final dissertation and defend their expertise to a panel of fellow experts. Tests throughout online doctoral engineering programs may help to ensure that any student who makes it to this stage is academically committed to expanding knowledge in their chosen field.

Dissertation

An engineering dissertation often needs to follow professional formatting guidelines. Students should be sure if they are working with sensitive or confidential information not to include those aspects in their dissertation as these documents are often considered public.

An oral exam often requires a student to justify the methods and conclusions of their dissertation and to explain how their work relates and contributes to the existing body of knowledge in their engineering specialty.

Distance Learning PhD Degrees in Engineering Studies Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is one of the disciplines of professional engineering, dealing with the creation of civilian-used structures from conceptualization through to construction and maintenance. Both publicly-funded governments and private companies are involved in civil engineering.

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.

Online learning refers to use of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. With online learning one has the flexibility to access their studies at any time and from anywhere they can log on.

ASU launches doctoral degree in engineering to help pros advance

The online, flexible degree will prepare professional engineers for roles leading large teams.

Today, employers need engineers capable of solving grand challenges.

While the C-suite is acutely aware of emerging opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, health care technology, advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity, they also know that future success will require effective leaders who can blend high-level technical capabilities, good soft skills and knowledge of advanced engineering management techniques.

And those employers would like to turn to the talent already on their bench.

Last year, the  Wall Street Journal reported  that many engineering-focused companies such as Northrop Grumman, Dell Technologies and Honeywell ranked high on the list of firms that desire to promote from within. Meanwhile,  48% of employers  say they offer tuition assistance as part of their incentive packages.

But how can working engineers get the higher-level education needed to advance their careers while maintaining their current jobs?

The  Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering  at Arizona State University has come up with a solution.

Ross Maciejewski , director of the  School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence , recently announced the launch of the fully online Doctor of Engineering, or DEng, with a focus in engineering management .

“The new DEng in engineering seeks to create a pathway for professional engineers to advance into roles that require highly sophisticated skills,” Maciejewski says. “The asynchronous learning program is designed to be of great value to both engineers and their employers.”

A practical degree from a professor of practice

To develop the degree, the Fulton Schools turned to Professor of Practice Daniel McCarville.

“The thing about busy, professional engineers is that they are busy,” McCarville says. “They have the drive to advance and want to develop new and critical skills, but they need access to a quality educational program that is flexible enough to be completed in tandem with their current work.”

McCarville was the ideal choice to spearhead the effort of developing the new DEng. As a faculty member in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, he has significant research interests in quality engineering, industrial statistics and engineering management. But he also spent 27 years in the semiconductor industry, working for companies such as Motorola and Mindspeed Technologies, where he led teams through the development of large-scale quality systems and complex manufacturing processes. These hybrid experiences gave him unique insight into the skills engineers need to take their careers to the next level.

With busy adult learners in mind, McCarville conceived of a program that is fully online and highly flexible. Unlike a more conventional Doctor of Philosophy, or PhD, program that might involve the creation of a research dissertation that is more theoretical in nature, a Doctor of Engineering requires completing a significant applied research project.

Ideally, that project will be completed in conjunction with the engineer’s work for their current employer or be aligned with current research interests.

A portrait of Douglas C. Montgomery

An online program forged from real-world excellence

McCarville especially understood that the educational offerings must be of the highest quality. So, he tapped top faculty members to help develop the curriculum.

It was crucial to involve  Douglas C. Montgomery . The ASU Regents Professor is the author of 16 books and more than 200 technical papers. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the American Society for Quality, the Royal Statistical Society and the Institute of Industrial Engineers; he is also an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.

Montgomery says that the Fulton Schools faculty worked hard to create a challenging, relevant new degree program.

“Our high-level faculty team came together to determine how we could best combine our experience in research, industry and academia and put those to work for the benefit of busy, professional engineers,” he says. “Our goal was to create a program that will help engineers take the next steps in their careers by preparing them to lead large teams working on demanding projects and assume higher-level technical management positions.”

Professor  Rong Pan  played a pivotal role in the discussion of the degree’s industrial engineering component. With projects supported by the  National Science Foundation , the  Science Foundation of Arizona  and the  Arizona Department of Transportation , Pan has significant experience in quality and reliability engineering.

Pan says the new degree will provide engineers with a synergy of skills.

“The engineering management degree program has both the advanced technical skills, such as the optimization of production systems and the Six Sigma methodology, and the critical soft skills, such as communication, strategic planning and leadership, built into its curriculum,” Pan says. “More importantly, it engages engineering professionals in life-long learning and provides them the opportunities to work directly with the faculty in our highly ranked program to solve real-world problems.”

Other notable faculty members highly involved in the planning process include Teresa Wu , associate dean of global engagement and founding co-director of ASU-Mayo Center for Innovative Imaging, industrial engineering Program Chair  Feng Ju  and Associate Professor  Giulia Pedrielli , a former fellow for the Institute of Industrial Technologies and Automation with the Italian National Research Council.

Logging on and moving up

The new Doctor of Engineering will begin in fall of 2024. The School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence will accept applications on a rolling basis until July.

The program is the next logical step in engineering management degree programs for the Fulton Schools, which is ranked No. 5 in engineering management online master’s degree programs by U.S. News & World Report.

McCarville is looking forward to connecting engineers with the training needed to boost their careers.

“The new DEng degree program has been developed by internationally recognized faculty members and will use a practical, research-based approach to lead engineers forward so they can, in turn, lead their teams,” McCarville says.

Coordinates of Elektrostal in decimal degrees

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
