Ever since our childhood, we have been told that the Peacock is a symbol of elegance. In school , we are taught that it was our national bird, and for good reason. We must all remember being fascinated by this bird, while looking at pictures in our text books.

With a brilliantly coloured tail, reflecting a myriad of shades of blue and green, the Peacock is easily one of the most beautiful birds out there in the animal kingdom.

The Peafowl, as it is generally referred to as by animal researchers and scientists, is found in the south east region of Asia, primarily in the countries of India and Sri Lanka .

It is categorised under the Birds of Paradise nomenclature, which consists of birds with heavily modified beauty features, either in the form of feathers or some other body common well known of the different types of peacocks is the majestic Indian Peacock.

With its distinctive blue green feathers and extensive plumage, it is quite famous among tourists. The distinctive colour of the Peacock’s feathers has encouraged us to create a new shade of blue, dubbed as the Peacock Blue. There are also the females, commonly referred to as Peahens.

In Roman and Greek history, peacocks were considered as a symbol of royalty. In Indian ancient history, the Maurya Empire, the first of the great dynasties who successfully connected and unified the kingdoms in India, has their name derived from a peacock.

Maurya literally means of a peacock. It is derived from the Sanskrit word Mayura, meaning Peacock.

Diet and Nature

Peacocks are also symbols of pride and leadership. Peacocks are known to be immune from poison. They even deliberately consume poison to make themselves more immune.

Also, it is said that they do it to make their plumage more vibrant, since every poisonous and venomous creature is brightly coloured. Peacocks are omnivorous birds, meaning they eat anything and everything they can fit into their beaks.

They eat berries, vegetables, insects, anthropoids and reptiles. The Indian Peacock is well known for their appetite of snakes. Domesticated peacocks are known to eat grains, bread, rice, cheese. Zoo keepers have observed that these birds usually prefer protein rich foods.

Thanks to its cultural and historical significance, peacocks have been protected with extreme prejudice. Due to such extensive conservation efforts, the peacock population now exceeds a lakh. These birds have to be protected since their tail feathers are rare and thus, expensive.

Countries have banned the collection of peacock feathers by any means. Except that by natural shedding of these feathers.

People often buy these for their beautiful shade of colours. It is also used extensively in decoration, especially during Indian festivals, where the shrine or statue of Hindu Gods, are adorned with these feathers.

I have seen hundreds of different types of birds and observed their unique quirks and I adore them all, but my favourite is the cuckoo. Cuckoos are black in colour and have long tails. They look like crows but are smaller than them. The sound that cuckoos make is very pleasant to listen to and they are quite famous for it as well. Their melodious call fills everyone with joy. Cuckoos live on trees and in bushes. They eat fruits, insects, and worms. They especially like eating caterpillars.

Cuckoos are migratory birds and we often see them during the spring season. Hence, they are called the harbinger of spring. Cuckoos have a peculiar habit. They do not make nests and are infamous for laying eggs in the nests of other birds, usually crows. A female cuckoo can lay eggs in as many as 50 nests during the breeding season.

Cuckoos have evolved to lay eggs that mimic the eggs of crows. This prevents their eggs from being ejected from the nest. The crows mistake the eggs as their own and look after them. Cuckoo chicks hatch and grow up under the care of crows.

In the village, we wake up every day listening to the chirping of different birds and during the spring season, it is beautiful ‘kuhu kuhu’ of the cuckoos that dominate. There are at least ten pairs of cuckoos that live in our orchard and we give them grains and fruits to feed on.

Although they are usually afraid of humans and don’t come too close, I once befriended a cuckoo. It had red eyes and used to come near the windowsill of my room every morning. I fed it grains that I got from my grandmother and also caught a few hairy caterpillars for it. One day, it brought along another cuckoo. Both of them looked quite similar.

I had a great time interacting with the cuckoos in my village orchard and fell in love with them. When the vacation was over, we had to come back and I started missing the cuckoos. I read a lot of articles on these birds and filled my room with posters of these beautiful creatures. After a few months, when we went to visit my grandparents again, it was already winter and the cuckoos had migrated. I never saw my friend again but I still remember its amazing red eyes and melodious voice. Cuckoos have since been my favourite birds.

The Peacocks of Rajasthan sure did make my daughters wake up early in the morning to collect feathers. Rajasthan seems to have the kind of terrain that is hostile, but it is the home for India’s national bird, the Peacock. Here is a short photo essay on peacocks of Rajasthan, the national bird of India.

Wake up Calls by Peacocks of Rajasthan

Through out the drive along the roads of Rajasthan we spotted peacocks moving freely in abundance. Mornings we woke up to the calls of the peacocks “may-awe, may-awe”.

Peafowl (peacocks and peahens) have 11 different calls, but it is the peacocks that really yell. My daughters woke up quite early those days to collect the fallen peacock feathers .

We saw several blue peacocks wandering freely in the hotel properties. However these peacocks were going through a molt , so did not look their best. They shed all their beautiful tail feathers every year and grow new ones.

In the hotel lawns we saw peacocks forage for plants, insects and small creatures from the ground. They are omnivores. We tried hand feeding them with groundnuts but they were too shy to approach us. Peacocks are friendly birds and here is a proof in pic.

The large flowing feathers at their back (more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length) are called the train of feathers. When a peacock is just walking around, his train drags on the ground behind him, like the train on a wedding dress.

India and Sri Lanka is home to the blue peacocks known by the name Indian Peafowl . While in Java and Myanmar you will find the green peacocks. The Congo peacock , inhabits African rain forests.

3 Factors Why Peacock is National Bird of India

Peacock was declared the national bird of India in 1963. The 3 reasons attributed to this choice are:

It is widely mentioned in religious, ancient texts, legends and mythological stories of India.
Peacock bird is well distributed though out the country.
It is easily recognized by citizens from every part of the country.

Peacock Crest

The crest acts like a sensor, they vibrate in same frequency with which a peacock rattles its tail feathers. It is said the peahen feels these frequencies in her head.

Humble Peahen

The humble peahen is drab mottled brown in color which helps it to merge with the surroundings and protects while it incubates its eggs. At Jodhpur during a village safari we were lucky to spot a peahen’s nest.

Our guide took us closer, the peahen flew off and we were able to see the eggs. I expected the peahen to attack us but she just stayed away and looked on. I took couple of pictures of the peahen eggs quickly before the mother would change her mind.

Peahens lay three to six eggs in a clutch. Incubation time is 29 days. My daughters wanted to return the next month to see the peafowl chicks. I had to remind them schools would have reopened by then after the vacations.

In spite of seeing so many peacocks, peahens and even their eggs I still came back with the disappointment. That was for not being able to see the peacocks using their large train for mating rituals and courtship displays. 🙁

The train arches into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird’s back and touches the ground on either side. Females choose their mates according to the color, quality and size of these hypnotic feather trains.

We spotted a mother peahen with her chick crossing the road. Male peafowls begin to grow tail feathers only after 3 years of age, till then all chicks looks alike.

Colors of Peacock Feathers

Kids and me, we were mesmerized seeing the peacock bird so close. We could see the vivid peacock colors, the different shades of blue and green. I took peacock pics to my heart’s content, here are some:

The phoenix bird is a mythical creature that resembles an eagle with broader wings. Its elegant, peacock-like feathers burst with the dazzling colors of flames. Any Harry Potter fan could explain what this magnificent "fire bird" looks like in great detail.

However, the phoenix lived only in legends of ancient times and modern works of fiction: It is not a real bird found in nature. Just as the dragon was a figment of collective imagination, the story of the sacred bird called the phoenix is likely based on the now-extinct Egyptian Bennu heron .

Regardless of its actual existence, the phoenix mythology has endured across many cultures of the ancient world and remains an important symbol of the neverending cycle of life and death today.

Origins of the Phoenix Tale

Is the greek phoenix considered a sacred bird, what is the 'phoenix rising' analogy, other famous mythical birds around the world.

Although J.K. Rowling is arguably a talented fictional world-builder, the famous author of Harry Potter can not be credited with creating the phoenix myth. For that, we credit the ancient Egyptians.

Ancient Egyptian Lore

Egyptian folklore claims that the Bennu bird was born from the heart of Osiris, or burst forth from the ashes of a holy tree near the eternal city of the sun god, Ra.

The legend says that, near the end of its life, the mythical bird would return to its birthplace near the temple to build a nest that would ignite. The old phoenix dies, and a new phoenix is born from the ashes.

Chinese Mythology

The phoenix also appears in the Chinese myths of Feng Huang. Feng Huang was believed to be a sacred bird of great rarity that possessed an amalgamation of different animal parts, including the head of a golden pheasant and the back of a tortoise.

These different attributes symbolized the idea of the sun, moon, and other celestial bodies working in harmony to build the wonder of our universe.

The first Western Phoenix account appears in Greek historian Herodotus' recorded travels into ancient Egypt. Any Greek story is chock full of immortal heroes interacting with mythical creatures, so it can be easy to see why writers like Herodotus were eager to adopt the mythological bird into their culture.

The modern nickname "phoenix" is actually Latin, which stemmed from a Greek word that can be translated into crimson, griffin or palm tree. (Language is funny like that.)

In the Greek tradition, there is a story about Apollo — the sun god — stopping his chariot to listen to the mythical bird' s song, but there is no evidence of the phoenix holding a sacred position amongst the gods of the Pantheon.

Unlike the plethora of dragons, unicorns and other mythical creatures, there is only one phoenix, and it exists in an eternal lifecycle, beginning and ending in flames.

When a phoenix dies, it rises from the ashes, gifted with renewed life. This concept of hope and joy coming from despair is at the heart of the phoenix rising analogy, which has endured as a symbol of rebirth for over a thousand years.

Birds hold a special place in the human heart, and their majestic appearance elements make them a common muse for myths and folklore in nearly every culture.

Thunderbird and Lightning Bird

Several African and Native American cultures have stories of gigantic birds that nest in the tallest mountains and have the power to summon thunder and lightning in nearby villages.

In South Africa and Zimbabwe, this creature is often known as Impundulu and is most commonly associated with medicine men and spiritual shamans.

Hugin and Munin

These two ravens are loyal spies for Odin, the most powerful god in Norse mythology. Their names mean "thought" and "memory," which are both necessary traits for creatures acting as Odin's eyes and ears between the many multidimensional kingdoms surrounding Earth .

This dragon-like bird from Filipino mythology is a serious force of nature that is large enough to swallow the moon, explaining eclipses and other mysterious celestial events. Quetzalcoatl

Although Aztec iconography may portray this serpentine creature to look more like a dragon, it's often connected more with birds due to its large wings and thick plumage of multi-colored feathers.

Quetzalcoatl was a central deity of the Aztec religion that held sway over the wind, merchants, arts, crafts, knowledge and learning.

Similar to the sirens of Greek mythology, the Gamayun from Russia has the face of a woman and the body of a bird. Gamayun's song is said to foretell the future, and the mythological creature is often associated with universal knowledge and insight into the unseen world.

The Harry Potter book series and film adaptations have attracted a massive global following with an equally extensive catalog of fan lore. One notable theory refers to the most famous phoenix in pop culture, Dumbledore's loyal pet, Fawkes. Many theorize that the mythical bird is named after Guy Fawkes , a British soldier-turned-rebel, who participated in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Westminster Palace in 1605. Guy Fawkes and his accomplices were foiled in their plans, but the explosive nature of the historical figure may have some correlations with the beloved fictional phoenix.

Animal control officers in Michigan struggle to capture elusive peacock

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Animal control officers in Michigan are struggling to capture an elusive peacock that has been on the loose for at least two days.

A student discovered the peacock on Monday as he was driving to Valley Lutheran High School in Saginaw County, MLive.com reported. Rachel Horton, director of the Saginaw County Animal Care and Control Center, said the student decided to bring the peacock with him to school and try to find the owner but the peacock got away, MLive.com reported.

Animal control officers almost captured it Tuesday morning, but it escaped again, leaving the officers with scratches and “a tree-climbing experience that we may need to train on in the future,” Horton said.

The center is now seeking donations to buy a $150 animal capture net.

Citizens have been trying to capture the bird as well, to no avail, Horton said.

Will Roy Cohn Save Donald Trump’s Hide One Last Time?

Sitting still for hours on end in a chilly, drab courtroom, unable to speak his mind, forced to listen to people say objectionable things about him, Donald Trump at a defense table in Manhattan’s Criminal Court may seem as far from his usual domain — the cheering crowds and the trappings of wealth — as could be imagined.

But it was in another courthouse just down the street that Mr. Trump’s wily mentor, Roy Cohn, pulled off one of his greatest legal feats. It was Mr. Cohn who taught Mr. Trump how to manipulate the law, and other people, to his advantage. His ghost now hovers over the former president’s entire legal outlook, influencing proceedings in ways large and small. The outcome in this case may be the final verdict on Mr. Cohn’s brilliant, sinister strategies.

Mr. Trump always admired Mr. Cohn’s bravado and belligerence; Mr. Cohn’s whole worldview seemed to validate the young developer’s crassest instincts. “If you need somebody to get vicious,” Mr. Trump once said, “hire Roy Cohn.” His legal strategy boiled down to: Delay and deny. Don’t hesitate to attack the judge and prosecutor (“I don’t care what the law is; tell me who the judge is” was his most famous line). Address the press every chance you get. And intimidate and ridicule witnesses.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers have aggressively sought every delay possible and called for mistrials or new judges on a regular basis. Of the four criminal proceedings Mr. Trump faces, the one wrapping up now is probably the only case that will be heard before Election Day — and if Mr. Trump wins a second term, all bets are off. He attacked Justice Juan Merchan and witnesses so many times that he has been placed under gag orders — and then fined, when he repeatedly failed to honor them. And as for litigating a case through the media, Mr. Trump went Mr. Cohn one better: He founded his own social media organization, Truth Social, and litigates his cases there.

In the Manhattan case, the defense attorney Todd Blanche went for the jugular when cross-examining Mr. Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen, shouting , “The jury doesn’t want to hear what you think happened!” and invoking a disparaging remark that Mr. Cohen had made — about Mr. Blanche himself — with such fidelity that Justice Merchan rebuked him for his profanity. Later, the attorney Susan Necheles sought to shame Stormy Daniels, a porn star, accusing her of “selling” herself and having “a lot of experience making phony stories about sex appear to be real.”

Most recently we learned that the former president would not be taking the witness stand and exposing himself to cross-examination, choosing instead to let a stream of prominent Republicans visitors make his case for him on the courthouse steps. That is the strategy that Mr. Cohn lived by.

Roy Cohn was indicted four times by Manhattan’s legendary prosecutor Robert Morgenthau. “I said to him, ‘Roy, just tell me one thing,’” Mr. Trump wrote in “The Art of the Deal.” “‘Did you really do all that stuff?’ He looked at me and smiled. ‘What the hell do you think?’ he said. I never really knew.” The most notorious of these cases involved charges of conspiracy, extortion, blackmail and bribing a former city appraiser inside the Foley Square courthouse. The trial dragged on for 11 weeks.

Mr. Cohn filed a formal affidavit of prejudice against the judge, asking him to recuse himself from the case. Mr. Cohn also claimed that the indictment should be dismissed because it was the result of a “personal vendetta” against him by Mr. Morgenthau. Both motions were denied, but they served to delay the prosecution’s case.

On Dec. 8, 1969, the last day of the proceedings, Mr. Cohn’s lawyer, Joseph Brill, was about to make his summation when he complained of chest pains and was rushed to a hospital. The court adjourned, not knowing what would happen next.

The following afternoon, Mr. Cohn, dressed in a monogrammed shirt and a dark-blue suit with thin stripes, astonished the judge and prosecutors by announcing that he was prepared to make his own summation.

It was an ingenious strategy that in effect allowed him to testify on his own behalf — which he had avoided doing — without having to submit to a cross-examination.

He spoke, brilliantly and without notes, for an hour that day, then for an extraordinary seven hours the next day. Peter King, who would go on to serve as a member of New York’s congressional delegation, was there as a young lawyer in Mr. Cohn’s firm. “It was effective, low-key,” he told me last week. “It was emotional, but in a quiet way. No histrionics. He was like the ultimate perfect summation.” By the end, one female juror was weeping , overcome with emotion.

It took the jury a mere four hours to declare him not guilty. Mr. Cohn turned to the assembled reporters and said simply, “God bless America.”

Mr. Trump has found his own ways to communicate to the jury without submitting to cross-examination, closing his eyes to shut out testimony he cannot abide and even audibly cursing at one point while Stormy Daniels was on the stand.

Of all the lessons Mr. Trump learned from his mentor, the value of treating people transactionally may have been the most important. The former president has run through countless lawyers in his decades of legal proceedings. Many were discarded. Some were not paid. But he held Mr. Cohn in high regard and took his lessons to heart. In 1981, he gave his mentor a pair of huge diamond cuff links as a gesture of profound gratitude. Years later, a friend of Mr. Cohn’s had them appraised. They were worthless fakes.
