Most children might have heard the famous proverb, ‘Cleanliness is next to godliness.’ But do they know the core meaning of these words? Through this proverb, it’s the quality of being morally pure and personally hygienic that has been highlighted. It suggests the idea that it is the responsibility of every individual to have a moral responsibility to keep themselves and their surroundings clean and tidy. The first step in building a clean and safe environment for everyone to live in is to understand this responsibility; do what you should and motivate others around you also to do what is necessary to keep the surroundings clean and tidy.

Sample Speech on Cleanliness

A few samples of speeches on cleanliness are given below. Please go through them and utilise the resource for your better understanding.

Just like lemons are required for lemonades, cleanliness is required for good health. Cleanliness and hygiene are the two inevitable parts of a healthy and refined lifestyle. Let’s remember the words of the father of our nation — “I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet”. People prioritise cleanliness over anything. It is evident from many reports that the chance of developing good thoughts is high in individuals when they maintain good hygiene and cleanliness. By analysing the trait of cleanliness, a thousand pieces of information regarding the nature and lifestyle of the individual can be easily assumed. Cleanliness tells a lot about a human being’s character.

It’s not only about keeping us safe from diseases, there are multiple things that cleanliness will bring into our lives. Research has found that watching a clean room boosts the overall happiness of an individual by 53%. And also, by the process of removing clutter, people can reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. People living in disorganised spaces are more likely to be stressed, distracted, and less productive. As a result, their ability to concentrate on specific subjects will be too low compared to the people living in clean houses.

We live in a world where everyone is busy racing against time. People do not spare even a few minutes of a day for taking care of themselves. It is hard to keep things clean when leading a busy lifestyle, but one must realise that a clean body and house are essential for a human being to be healthy. So try to develop a cleaning schedule and start defending against diseases. It is better to follow cleanliness for a disease-free life with contentment and peace.

Imagine you are the character Alice in the book Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. In the novel, she spots a white rabbit with pink eyes, watch, waistcoat, and hat, and immediately chases it. Just like her, the burning curiosity within your mind will definitely ask you too to chase it. Eventually, you will fall into that rabbit hole as in the story. Continue your imagination. After the fall, when you get up, there are two roads right before you. One road is very dirty, foul-smelling, and abuzz with flies. But the second one is just the opposite. It is very clean, fragrant, and appealing. Which road will you choose? You don’t even need a moment to think and decide, right? Definitely, we all will be choosing the clean one. But why?

We don’t even know where it leads to. But still, we will stand firm in our choice. It is because cleanliness is always connected to righteousness. Positivity will be the first intuition that every human body develops after hearing about cleanliness. To sum it up, cleanliness helps to bring positive energy, and keeps the mind of the individual happy.

We can simply define cleanliness as the state or quality of leading a healthy and hygienic lifestyle by keeping yourself and your surroundings clean. Other than the visual treat and pleasure, cleanliness offers us multiple benefits. It is undoubtedly an imperative trait that every individual must possess for a healthy life. Cleanliness keeps diseases away. It is not at all new knowledge for us. Every individual with a bit of common sense knows this fact but still compromises on this part.

People know that lack of cleanliness and hygiene leads to the growth of many kinds of germs causing several deadly diseases. And many of such diseases are contagious — they spread from one individual to another. So a simple mistake or compromise on the side of an individual is enough to turn the world upside down. This is the reason why there exist multiple organisations and committees all around the world to speak on the importance of cleanliness. These groups conduct awareness programmes and other special events to boost the society’s awareness about the importance of cleanliness. There are multiple missions like the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission, which is an initiative taken by the government of India to accelerate the efforts of the people for universal sanitation. Swachh Bharat Mission or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or Clean India Mission, was launched by the Prime Minister of India on 2nd October 2014. The slogan of this countrywide campaign is “One step towards cleanliness”. So, let’s unite and take steps towards a cleaner, healthier India.

A Speech On Cleanliness is usually given to address the importance of tidiness within and around the individual and society. Cleanliness is a vital way to live a healthy life. One who keeps clean keeps the diseases far away from him. In this article, you will understand the way to speak on the importance of cleanliness and ways to maintain it in a simple and easy language. There will be a variety of formats to present your topic in, it can be a Long Speech On Cleanliness or a Short Speech On Cleanliness.

Long and Short Cleanliness Speech In English

Long speech on cleanliness.

This kind of Speech On Cleanliness is helpful for students in grades 8-12, as there are many awareness programs held now especially in schools so students can present with a Long Speech On Cleanliness. Take a look below.

Good Morning and a very warm welcome to everyone gathered here, today I ABC (mention your name) have the opportunity to speak on the importance of cleanliness. We have all heard of the saying Cleanliness is next to Godliness, which means it is in clean places that God resides. Many would like to keep their houses clean but throw their household waste into the streets irresponsibly, which is harmful to the environment.

When one thinks of cleanliness, it is important to understand that cleanliness can be explored on many levels. Personal cleanliness means maintaining personal hygiene on day to day basis in the ways like brushing your teeth twice a day, taking bath every day, keeping your hair tidy, making up your bed, cleaning your cupboard, wearing clean clothes, doing laundry regularly, eating clean by avoiding junk foods, tidying up your reading desk, and keeping your room clean. Personal cleanliness is very important in order to lead a healthy life. At the same time, it is important to be considerate of the environment we live in and take accountability to keep our surroundings clean as well.

We must be aware of our surroundings and the harm it causes when we destroy it by making dirty littering plastics all around. Environment cleanliness is equally important, which is why our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started a campaign to keep India clean by keeping our surroundings clean called “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.” It is our responsibility to make the Swachh Bharat Mission a successful one as this is also a responsibility towards our nation. Often when tourists visit India, they complain about the lack of cleanliness, leaking sewage, open defecation, and the lack of awareness to practice proper hygiene. This kind of attitude gives a wrong impression of India and Indians.

There are so many steps already taken in the direction of the success of this mission, by making dustbins available on every street and by building public toilets, especially in villages. This practice will be helpful for our health as well. When one lives in unhygienic conditions, it is an invitation for diseases. Unhygienic conditions only serve as a breeding ground for more harmful bacteria and viruses. As we have learned during this pandemic due to the outbreak of a virus the only way to keep it afar is by staying neat and clean, always cleaning hands after touching a surface, and cleaning up after you come home from a long day of work. Cleanliness will keep you healthy, when you are healthy you are capable of taking healthy and fit decisions for yourself and lead an active life.

A cleaner lifestyle is helpful for you and everyone near you. So, when making these small changes, your life will also have a bigger impact. Share the same with your near and dear ones and help them to lead a clean and healthy life as well, and lead by being an example to them.

Thank you.

Short Speech on Cleanliness

This kind of Speech On Cleanliness is helpful for students in grades 4-7, as there are many awareness programs held now especially in schools so students in middle school can present with a Short Speech On Cleanliness. Take a look here.

Good morning everyone I ABC (take your name) am thankful for this opportunity to speak on Cleanliness and its importance and benefits. Cleanliness is the Gandhian way of living, so in 2014 on Gandhi Jayanti, our Prime Minister launched a mission to promote the idea of clean living further by pledging to build toilets in remote villages and small towns and providing a hygienic sanitation facility. Cleanliness is important at every stage of life be it in our own personal way or when we are a part of society.

When we live a clean life we lead a healthy and disease-free life. Take small steps towards the greater good of society and one can always start at home. Keeping our rooms and homes clean is the first step towards a cleaner life, personal hygiene can be maintained by taking care of our health and bodies clean, taking bath daily, brushing our teeth twice. Throwing the plastic or any food waste in the dustbin. One must maintain cleanliness at the workplace as well, and inevitably this will show a great impact on society and enhance environmental cleanliness. To keep the environment clean, do not engage in littering on the streets or urinating in public rather use a public toilet for sanitation.

Cleanliness will help you in taking good care of your own health while also keeping the environment clean. When the environment is clean, we lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Cleanliness should not be a one-time mission, it should be a practice and a daily habit. Stay clean and stay disease-free.

Speech on Importance of Cleanliness – 1

Good Morning to our Hon’ble Principle, Vice Principal, Fellow Colleagues and Our Lovely Students!!

As we know that Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of our country, has kick started the campaign called Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or ‘Clean India’ campaign with great gusto all across India to encourage people maintain high standard of cleanliness and hygiene at all places, be it our homes, workplaces, public places, streets/roads, etc so it becomes our responsibility too to inculcate the same spirit in our students.

Just like food, water, oxygen and other things are important for our existence, similarly cleanliness is also crucial for our healthy physical and mental makeup. Do we not keep hearing such news about people dying of diseases, such as Malaria, Jaundice, etc. that are borne out of filthy surroundings? Therefore, in order to prevent such cases the people of India should focus on maintaining cleanliness, which will help our country earn a respectable place in the eyes, souls, hearts and minds of the foreigners paying a visit to our country.

And, if every Indian citizen contributes to even some extent towards this Swachh Bharat Abhiyan then we cannot imagine how effective it will prove to be towards fulfilling the aim of this campaign. In fact, you can also teach people living in your vicinity or whom you know about the importance of cleanliness in their day-to-day lives.

However, dear students please also understand that you cannot force this on anyone. Cleanliness is a good habit and not everyone is born with it, so those who don’t practice cleanliness try and make them understand the benefits that cleanliness entails rather than forcing your viewpoint on others. Cleanliness can be of varied types, such as personal cleanliness, environment cleanliness, workplace cleanliness (such as our office, school, college, etc.). It doesn’t take much to maintain cleanliness in our day-to-day lives – just like we cook, eat, bathe, etc on a regular basis similarly maintaining cleanliness should also be made an integral part of our daily work lives. In fact, just by ensuring small-small things, such as throwing trash in the dustbin and not on the floor or road, not spitting or urinating on the road, etc. we can bring a substantial change in our surroundings.

We should not compromise with it and should make our little ones practice it right from their childhood so that they grow up as responsible individuals who know how to live a healthy life. This habit should be inculcated by parents in their children because parents; especially mother is the first mentor of a child who grooms him/her and helps giving shape to his/her personality.

When we know that Cleanliness is next to Godliness, so why are we still insensitive towards this issue? Unhygienic conditions can cause many serious health hazards including causing harm to the environment in the form of pollution. In filthy surroundings, germs spread all around, which we cannot see though our naked eyes and how fast these germs multiply we cannot possibly imagine. If pollution will increase in our environment – it will start breeding such diseases as asthma, cancer, chest congestion, lung infection thereby resulting in a person’s death.

So it’s high time when we should raise the consciousness of masses towards maintain cleanliness so that we can protect our environment and save the lives of hundreds of people who die due to unhygienic surroundings.

Speech on Importance of Cleanliness – 2

Good Morning to our Respectable Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Students!!

As you all know that our school has joined hands with other schools in the area for Clean Delhi Campaign, it has been considered appropriate to kick start this campaign right from our own institution where we as students will also get the encouragement to maintain cleanliness around us. But before we talk any further on this topic, let’s first understand what cleanliness is all about?

The term ‘cleanliness’ implies absence of dust, dirt, garbage, foul smell, stains, etc. You must have realized that most Indian places whether it’s a lane, street, railway station, government office, hospital or a bus stop look unclean and unpleasant to our eyes. In addition, the littered garbage, defaced walls and overflowing sewage result in the spread of diseases and clogging of water on the roads, which further aggravate the situation. The death toll rises as more and more people succumb to the diseases and die in the absence of proper treatment and care.

So to avoid this crisis, the natives of our country should put efforts towards maintaining cleanliness not only in their homes and working places, but in their surroundings too. A hygienic and clean environment creates happy souls and a fulfilling life. There is a famous idiom that says charity begins at home, likewise cleanliness of a city; village or town should first begin from people’s homes.

In fact, villages have become proactive in order to ensure cleanliness of their environment and hygiene of people inhabiting those villages. Other than public toilets, personal toilets too have been constructed in order to avoid defecation at open places. In fact, effective measures are being taken up for managing dirty water and solid waste. So when village folks are putting in concerted efforts, why we people living in well-developed cities should lag behind in this campaign? Please understand that cleanliness is as essential to human existence as oxygen, water and food. Also, it’s a foundation of discipline and hallmark of success because if a person can’t keep himself/herself and the immediate surrounding organized and clean, then how he/she would contribute towards the success of others. It’s not possible to maintain a healthy relationship with people in the absence of a clean environment. At least, a minimal level of cleanliness such as taking shower regularly, washing your hands after using toilet, protecting your feet from dust, throwing garbage in the dustbin, etc is expected from everyone.

Cleanliness is monumentally important and must be practiced daily. If we will keep ourselves and our surroundings clean, it will help in nation building exercise too because it will then encourage more and more foreign tourists to visit our land and appreciate its beauty, nature and living surroundings. Of course, no one wants to visit a foul land. So adopt a lifestyle and nurture a surrounding where there is no threat to nature and the living beings and everyone can live in a harmonious co-existence.

Speech on Importance of Cleanliness – 3

Good Morning my dear Sir, Ma’m and hello to all my friends.

For today’s morning Assembly, I have chosen Cleanliness as my topic. This is a very essential part of one’s routine, surroundings and hygiene.

Cleanliness is not only the physical, it is also the social and mental well being that helps in maintaining good personality and building a good impression on others. Cleanliness gives rise to good character by keeping body, mind and soul clean and peaceful.

Isn’t it that we all feel stronger and wealthier when we keep ourselves and our surroundings clean. It makes our aura positive and happy. Maintaining cleanliness is the essential part of healthy living because it is the cleanliness only which helps to improve our personality by keeping clean externally and internally.

Someone has rightly said that cleanliness is the way to godliness. This means that by maintaining cleanliness and having good thoughts brings people closer or near to the God. Personal cleanliness is considered as the symbol of purity of body and soul, which is crucial to get healthy and spiritual connection. Being clean is very essential for getting good health, positive well being and leading a moral life.

Our teachers are very keen on promoting cleanliness all around. This is because they are aware that in order to lead a healthy, happy and a peaceful life, we all should practice clean habits in every aspect of life because unhygienic conditions symbolize evil whereas cleanliness symbolizes purity.

It is not that difficult to keep ourselves clean or to keep our surroundings clean. We should do it for ourselves, for our inner peace and wealth. As human beings, it is our responsibility to promote safe and clean well being. Cleanliness helps us to create a positive public image, helps us in staying healthy and wealthy.

Maintaining cleanliness safeguards us from diseases and unhealthy social, physical and mental inner self. It is very simple to include cleanliness in our regular routine and make it our habit. We should never compromise with cleanliness, it is as necessary as food and water for us.

I am glad that my parents and teachers have always motivated me and have keenly put emphasis on maintaining environment clean. They have always demonstrated the importance of being tidy and clean. Every child should be conveyed the importance of cleanliness. Since childhood, it should be made an inherited value in them. Clean eating habits, clean clothing, not littering the stuff here and there, cleaning the toilet after their use are a few basic and very essential cleanliness tactics that one should understand and follow.

Friends, I hope, I have been able to share with you my thoughts on the importance of cleanliness. Please stay healthy by making yourself and your surroundings clean. Also, share your bit and make others aware about the benefits of cleanliness.

Thank you teachers and my friends. Thank You!

Speech on Importance of Cleanliness – 4

Good Morning everybody!

I want to thank my class teacher for considering me as the person who should bring forward the importance of cleanliness.

Friends; cleanliness is a very easy and crucial thing that we all should adhere to as individuals and also as the citizens of one country. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has specially launched a plan ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. He has launched this program by having faith in us that we will ensure our country’s cleanliness.

As being the citizen of the country, we all are responsible for cleaning any dirty place we see. We should keep our roads, tourist places, historical places, schools, colleges, office buildings, etc very neat and clean.

Cleanliness is not only required for the country. Charity begins at home, it is our home, school, college, society, community, office, organization, and everything even ourselves that should be kept clean. And it is not merely our choice, but our responsibility as being a human being. We need to clean ourselves, our home, surrounding areas, our society, community, city, garden, and environment on a daily basis.

It is not merely our physical looks; it is our mental and conscious well being as well. Cleanliness helps us make our social strengths. A clean person always seems a decent attraction for somebody to contact. People will like to appreciate and join with the ones who have clean habits. Similarly, if our country appears to be clean then how good it will feel when we see so many outsiders or tourists praising our country. Cleanliness should be our daily practice and not once in a lifetime or occasional thing.

Cleanliness of mind is also important along with physical cleanliness. As we keep our body clean, we must also keep our mind and heart clean. Lack of hygiene is the symbol of evil and cleanliness is the symbol of purity. Cleanliness is rightly said to be next to godliness. Spirituality cannot be preached until and unless the person is clean.

Children should be mandatory given lessons is cleanliness from the very beginning. They should be taught body hygiene. They should wash their hands before eating and take only clean food and pure water. At school, the children should be made to sit on properly cleaned chairs and benches. The elders should act as role models for children. They should themselves observe all the necessary rules regarding cleanliness.

I am sure that when we move from this desk we all be more dedicated towards the cleanliness drive than we were before. We as individuals are very strong to implement anything that we want to; cleanliness is merely one of our most important habits that are to be executed daily.

Thanks! Keep sharing the message of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan; it is our role to be played. Thank you! Have a great clean day!

Cleanliness is a state of purity, clarity, and precision.

A warm welcome to everyone present over here. As I said, cleanliness is an essential part of our lives. I am glad that I am allowed to speak on such an important topic. A healthy environment is our necessity; a number of factors lie within us how to maintain this necessity of ours. It is essential to keep our surrounding clean, which is the responsibility of every Indian citizen. The air we breathe in, the surrounding we live, the house we stay in & the workplace we work in, keeping everything neat & clean is an essential & crucial part of our life.

In Indian culture, it has been repeated since ages that god & goddess resides in the clean place. So it is one of the Indian rituals to clean our houses & surrounding during festivals or occasions. Lack of cleanliness leads to several problems. If hygiene & cleanliness is not maintained, we end up in different types of deadly diseases & germs, which may even take our lives. Now the question is how to maintain it? It starts from ourselves; we all must first keep ourselves clean.

Brush your teeth twice daily, washing your hands frequently, wearing cleaned clothes, taking a bath daily, cutting nails regularly, washing of fruits & vegetables before eating, putting back things in place, always ensuring that garbage is thrown in dustbin & many more. These are a few steps which are required to be taken to maintain personal hygiene which will ensure our & our home cleanliness. Personal hygiene has become very crucial to fight against the coronavirus pandemic we are facing now.

We are so much cautious about ourselves & our homes, but what about the mother earth? Have anyone given a thought? It is a home for millions of plants, animals, birds, aquatic animals as well as for all of us. Earth is our home which must be taken care of. In 2014 our government took a step “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” to clean the whole country & it is now the top priority for all.

It is our responsibility to ensure that we keep our country & earth clean. Avoiding the usage of plastic, recycling used plastic, using dustbin, avoiding spitting & many more small steps can lead us in the path of success. We all must make cleanliness a practice & a habit. It must be incorporated into the child from the very beginning. We need to aware of the people around us regarding the importance it plays in our life. So let us get together on this journey to make a healthier nation & world.

Short Speech on Cleanliness in English for Students and children

Respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends.

Good morning to all of you.

Today I am going to speak on the topic- Cleanliness.

Cleanliness is an important aspect of healthy living. It is a state of being clean which means free from dirt and germs. The habit of maintaining cleanliness is as important as consuming food, drinking water and breathing.

This habit should be encouraged right from childhood as cleanliness is considered next to godliness which means maintaining cleanliness is just like devoting yourself to God.

It is considered so important because it helps us prevent many kinds of diseases. When we keep ourselves clean and also our surroundings clean, we protect ourselves from various kinds of viruses and bad bacterias that can make us fall ill.

It not only prevents various diseases but also keeps us and our surroundings look beautiful. A clean place always looks very attractive and neat.

There are ways to maintain cleanliness around us. It is not very difficult. A small effort by all of us can keep us and our surroundings clean. For personal cleanliness, we should take bath daily, wash our hands before and after a meal, brush our teeth twice a day, comb our hair daily, etc.

To keep our surroundings clean, we should always throw garbage in the dust bin, clean our surroundings with the help of a mop and broom, always pick up in case there is a drop on the floor while eating, etc.

Sometimes we focus only on personal hygiene or cleanliness of the house but not of our surroundings. For example, throwing garbage on the road after cleaning the house. This is not the right thing to do.

Maintaining cleanliness in our surroundings is as important as cleanliness in our house. So we should never throw a toffee wrapper or an empty can on the road. In the case of no dust bin nearby, we should wait to dispose of it properly.

It is very easy to create a mess but it takes a lot of effort to clean. We should always take small steps towards maintaining cleanliness and avoid actions that spoil the beauty around us.

Speech on Clean Environment

You live in an environment, right? It’s everything around you – the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the ground you walk on. Now, imagine if all these were clean and free from pollution.

A clean environment is not just nice to have, it’s a must. It’s vital for your health, happiness, and overall well-being.

1-minute Speech on Clean Environment

Dear friends,

A clean environment is like a dream home. It’s where we feel happy, healthy, and safe. Imagine living in a place where the air is fresh, the water is clear, and trees surround us. That’s what a clean environment feels like. But, we need to work hard to keep it that way.

We all know how important trees are. They give us shade, fruits, and most importantly, clean air. They are like big, green, air-cleaning machines. So, let’s promise to plant more trees and take care of the ones we have.

Next, let’s talk about garbage. We all create it, but we need to manage it better. Throwing it here and there makes our surroundings dirty and unhealthy. It’s like inviting illness to our homes. We can change this by using dustbins and recycling as much as we can.

Water is life. But dirty water can harm us. So, let’s keep our rivers, lakes, and oceans clean. Let’s not throw waste into them. Instead, let’s treat our waste water so that it doesn’t harm our water bodies.

Air is what keeps us alive. But, if we keep on polluting it, it will make us sick. We can keep our air clean by using less vehicles, and saying no to firecrackers.

Friends, a clean environment is not just a gift to us, but also to our future generations. Just like we enjoy a clean home, let’s make sure they get a clean world. Let’s make a promise today to keep our environment clean. It’s not difficult. We just need to care a little more. Let’s start today. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Clean Environment

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A clean environment is like a big, happy family. It’s a place where the air is fresh, the water is clear, and the trees are green. It’s a place where birds sing, flowers bloom, and children play. It’s a place where we all can live happily and healthily. But, sadly, our environment is not as clean as it should be.

Let’s talk about air first. When we breathe in dirty air, it’s like eating spoiled food. It can make us sick. It can give us coughs and colds. It can even make it hard for us to breathe. And just like us, animals and plants also need clean air to live. Dirty air can make them sick too. So, we need to keep our air clean. We can do this by not burning trash, not smoking, and not using too many cars.

Now, let’s talk about water. Clean water is like a magic potion. It can quench our thirst. It can clean our bodies. It can help plants grow. But dirty water can’t do these things. It can make us sick. It can kill plants and animals. So, we need to keep our water clean. We can do this by not throwing trash in rivers and lakes, not wasting water, and not using harmful chemicals.

Next, let’s talk about land. Clean land is like a comfy bed. It’s a place where we can build our homes. It’s a place where plants can grow. But dirty land can’t be a home or a bed. It can’t grow plants. So, we need to keep our land clean. We can do this by not littering, not cutting down too many trees, and not using harmful pesticides.

Lastly, let’s talk about noise. A quiet environment is like a peaceful sleep. It helps us relax. It helps us think. But a noisy environment can’t do these things. It can make us stressed. It can make it hard for us to sleep or study. So, we need to keep our environment quiet. We can do this by not making too much noise, not playing loud music, and not honking our car horns too much.

In conclusion, a clean environment is not just about clean air, water, and land. It’s also about quiet surroundings. It’s about living in a place where we can breathe easily, drink safely, eat healthily, sleep peacefully, and think clearly. It’s about living in a place where we can be happy and healthy. Let’s work together to keep our environment clean. Let’s make our big, happy family even bigger and happier. Thank you.

Speech on Cleanliness is Next to Godliness

Fresh Reads

You are Ronak/ Rani of class XI. Your teacher has asked you to deliver a speech on the topic ‘Cleanliness is Next to Godliness’ in the morning assembly. Write the speech in not more than 150–200 words.

Good morning to one and all present. Today, I Ronak of XI B, got the golden opportunity to express my views on the topic ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’.

An old proverb says, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” This means that cleanliness comes next to Godliness in importance.

Cleanliness of the body is necessary for physical health. Dirt and disease go together. Disease causing germs breed and thrive in dirt; and the epidemic diseases which sweep over a country and carry off thousands, are generally the results of the dirty habits and surroundings of the people. Not only the regular washing of hands and face, but the frequent and thorough bathing of the whole body, and wearing clean clothes, are conditions of good health.

To keep our house and neighbourhood clean is our utmost obligation as it is the only remedy available for national health and hygiene. Dirt and refuse are the causes of sickness and sufferings, which ultimately give rise to diseases and epidemics. Plagues and epidemics that set in are called by filthy and insanitary hygienic conditions. So it is a prime duty of every citizen to ensure that public places and our surroundings are not littered.

A great percentage of our population lives below the poverty line. Slums in metropolitan areas are inhabited by these poor people, most of them have migrated from villages. Unable to earn a decent means of living, they live in huts having no proper sanitation or drinking water.

The uneducated people need to be instructed in civics and cleaning surroundings. Cleanliness of body leads to the cleanliness of mind, and thereby to the soul.

When and How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home

  • Regularly cleaning surfaces in your home helps prevent the spread of germs that can make you sick.
  • Cleaning surfaces in your home removes germs, dirt, and other impurities and helps you and your family stay healthy.
  • Sanitizing or disinfecting to reduce the spread of disease at home is likely not needed unless there are sick people in your home.

Woman vacuuming a bedroom

Definitions

  • Cleaning removes most germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Clean with water, soap, and scrubbing.
  • Sanitizing reduces germs to levels public health codes or regulations consider safe. Sanitizing is done with weaker bleach solutions or sanitizing sprays. Clean surfaces before you sanitize them.
  • Disinfecting kills most germs on surfaces and objects. Disinfecting is done with stronger bleach solutions or chemicals. Clean surfaces before you disinfect them.

Clean first and clean regularly

Cleaning is an important first step to make sure you remove most germs from surfaces in your home. Using household cleaners that contain soap or detergent will remove germs and dirt on surfaces. Cleaning alone removes most harmful viruses or bacteria from surfaces. Surfaces should be cleaned before they are sanitized or disinfected because impurities like dirt may make it harder for chemicals to get to and kill germs.

Sanitizing reduces the remaining germs on surfaces after cleaning.

Disinfecting can kill viruses and bacteria that remain on surfaces after cleaning. By killing germs on a surface after cleaning, disinfecting can further lower the risk of spreading germs that can cause illness. For everyday cleaning, you probably do not need to sanitize or disinfect unless someone in your home is sick or someone sick has recently visited.

Remember to clean first, and then sanitize or disinfect if needed.

When to clean surfaces in your home

  • Clean high-touch surfaces (for example, light switches, doorknobs, and countertops) regularly and after you have visitors in your home.
  • Clean other surfaces in your home when they are visibly dirty or as needed. Clean them more often if people in your household are more likely to get sick, such as young children and people with weakened immune systems. You may also choose to disinfect.
  • Clean surfaces using a product suitable for each surface, following instructions on the product label.

How to safely clean various surfaces

In most situations, cleaning regularly is enough to prevent the spread of germs. Follow these tips to safely clean different surfaces in your home:

For hard surfaces , such as counters, certain toys, light switches, and floors:

  • Clean surfaces with soap and water or with cleaning products appropriate for use on the surface.

When to sanitize in your home

Some surfaces and objects in your home may need to be sanitized after they are cleaned.

  • Sanitize food contact surfaces after a natural disaster (such as flooding) or emergency.
  • You may want to sanitize the inside of your refrigerator if you have a recalled food item.
  • Sanitize surfaces using a product suitable for each surface, following instructions on the product label.

How to Sanitize Safely

Daily sanitizing may not be necessary if surfaces and objects are cleaned carefully after use. To sanitize a surface or object, use a weaker bleach solution or an EPA-registered sanitizing product.

For nonporous objects, such as certain toys and infant feeding items :

  • Sanitize items by either boiling, steaming, or using a weaker bleach solution. Check with the item's manufacturer about which method to use. A dishwasher with a sanitizing cycle can be used for some items.
  • After sanitizing, place items on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel and allow to air dry thoroughly before storing or using.
  • Do not use a dish towel to rub or pat items dry because doing so may transfer germs to the items.

For hard surfaces, such as kitchen counters and food preparation areas:

  • Clean countertops with hot, soapy water.
  • Then sanitize any surface that has touched or been contaminated by raw meat, poultry, or their juices, including the inner sink , using a homemade bleach solution or sanitizing products.

Disinfecting

When to disinfect.

In addition to cleaning, disinfect your home when someone is sick or if someone is at a higher risk of getting sick due to a weakened immune system (for example, people being treated with immune-suppressing drugs for cancer, organ transplants, or other illnesses, or people with HIV or genetic conditions that affect the immune system).

How to disinfect safely

To disinfect, use an EPA-registered disinfecting product or a stronger bleach solution . Clean the surface with soap and water first.

Follow these important safety guidelines when using chemical disinfectants :

  • Always read and follow the directions on the label of disinfecting products to ensure safe and effective use and safe disposal.
  • Wear the recommended protective equipment (for example, gloves or goggles) to protect your skin and eyes from potential splashes.
  • Leave the disinfectant on the surface long enough to kill the germs. This is called the contact time. You can find the contact time in the directions. The surface should stay wet during the entire contact time to make sure germs are killed.
  • Ensure good ventilation if using products indoors (for example, use a fan or open windows and doors to allow fresh air to enter).
  • If the directions tell you to dilute the product with water, use water at room temperature (unless the label says otherwise). Label diluted cleaning or disinfectant solutions.
  • Store and use chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not mix products or chemicals with each other.
  • Do not eat, drink, breathe, or inject disinfection products into your body or apply directly to your skin. These products can cause serious harm.
  • Do not wipe or bathe pets with any disinfection products.
