Ram debut directorial is a masterfully crafted provocative psychological thriller. The story follows a frustrated young Tamil postgraduate, Prabhakar who lost his dear ones early in life and is constantly exploited by the social circumstances around him, losing his mental balance and gradually turning into a sociopath. His life, love, sufferings, anger towards the effects of globalization creating inequality, marginalization, huge wealth gap in the social structure are portrayed in a hard hitting manner.

The non linear screenplay is set in a captivating manner and the movie is technically solid. Dialogues are fiery and thought provoking. Another major appeal factor are its songs. Yuvan composes a fantastic album; Unakaagathaane, Para para pattampoochi and Paravaiye Enga irukirai are pure magical numbers. Jeeva delivers one of his career best performance while anjali was delightful in her role. A bold daring attempt from Ram which is a MUST WATCH.

“Logic are for stories. But real life don’t have logic and reasoning.”

ONCE YOU BECOME GOD, KILLING IS NOT A CRIME. In a constantly competitive world, do arts, humanitiy and philosophy stands a chance? Would you be a good person or a successful person? This powerful film raises such important questions and much more.

The final "nejamaa thaan soldriyaa?" from Aanadhi made me forget my existential crisis. Bro literally said what escaping the Matrix will be like in the current world.

Masterpiece!!!!

While most films these days have this tendency to blame society for every unexplained paramater of a person's behavior, Kattradhu Thamizh hunts for those and points it down to the dot. Pure wow.

Edit : I really did underestimate Jeeva. 😶

I'm just speculating here - In Kattrathu thamizh, Karunas' character is named Yuvaan-Suang, which is in fact one of the less common romanisations of "Xuanzang". Xuanzang was a Chinese monk who traveled to India in the 17th century and described the Indian culture in his works. Karunas' character arc is quite similar to that of Xuanzang. In the sense that it is Karunas who helps Prabhakar tell his history to the world. The whole movie, is essentially, memoirs of a serial killer as accounted by Yuvaan-Suang.

I REALLY NEED TO STOP WATCHING THESE GOOD ASS MOVIES BECAUSE THEY ALSO HAPPEN TO MAKE ME SAD AS FUCK AFTER

literally so used to Jiiva playing loverboy//lighthearted roles so this was really new for me. I really want to see him play more roles like this because he was insanely good, i really never saw him playing something like this but here I am. Has to be one of his best performances watching this man go insane was so terrifying yet so enjoyable. Story building was wonderful, i loved that i could physically see how everything connected to each other and built up more and more, and dialogues were incredible, SO memorable I REALLY REALLY loved this movies message.…

Sehr, sehr vielschichtig. Sehr, sehr gut und immer weiter verdichtend erzählt. Faszinierend! Und top! ♥

Movie: Kattradhu Thamizh Director: Ram Language: Tamil

Kattradhu Thamizh is pure art in Tamil cinema and great debut for a director. It's intense and harsh and even relevant today. Jiiva and Anjali has given terrific performances in a serious role. The screenplay is very rivetting and keeps you hooked.

"We live in a society" - Joker

What happens when a Tamil postgraduate gets crushed by the society when he has already endured a lot in his life? He becomes mentally ill. Seeing the parallels to joker yet? Like serial killers use Bible in Hollywood movies, Jiiva used Bharathiar and Thiruvalluvar poem to justify his killings. He has a lot of anger towards the society and feels like he has been…

Katrathu Tamil is a Tamil psychological drama film released in 2007, directed by Ram, who made his directorial debut with this film. The film stars Jiiva (credited as Jeeva) in the lead role, with Anjali making her debut as the female lead. The film also features Karunas and Azhagam Perumal in pivotal roles. Its original title translates to 'What I have learned is Tamil', which reflects the film's focus on the Tamil language and the plight of a young man well-versed in it.

The protagonist of the film is Prabhakar, played by Jeeva, an individual who has completed his Masters in Tamil, a subject he is deeply passionate about. Despite his profound knowledge and love for the language, Prabhakar struggles to find a decent job that rewards his qualifications and expertise. The film explores the societal pressures and the harsh realities of life where academic excellence does not necessarily translate into occupational success, especially when one specializes in a field like Tamil literature that is not widely regarded as commercially viable.

Prabhakar's character is that of an idealist who believes that his education in Tamil, his mother tongue, should be enough to secure him a respectable position in society. However, as he steps out into the real world seeking job opportunities, he is faced with disappointment after disappointment. Every door of potential employment seems to close on him, not because he lacks ability or dedication, but because of the market's lack of appreciation for his subject of choice.

The film adeptly portrays the contrast between Prabhakar's passion and the utilitarian approach of society where languages and the arts are often overshadowed by profitable professions. The narrative dives deep into the emotional and psychological impact that such a relentless series of rejections and dejections have on Prabhakar. It raises poignant questions about the value system of contemporary society and points to the struggles faced by individuals who pursue academic interests that are deemed less 'practical' or 'marketable'.

Anjali's character enters Prabhakar's life as a ray of hope and proves to be an emotional anchor for him. As a newcomer, Anjali delivers a performance that is both heartfelt and convincing. Her interactions with Jeeva's character bring a sense of solace and normalcy to his turbulent life. It is through his relationship with her that the audience gets to see the more vulnerable and tender aspects of Prabhakar's otherwise resilient personality.

Karunas and Azhagam Perumal's roles contribute significantly to the narrative arc of the film. Karunas, known for his comedic prowess, plays a role that helps to lighten the tone at times with his natural comedic timing, but also adds depth with his dramatic capabilities. Azhagam Perumal, on the other hand, takes on a role that brings additional layers to the storyline, playing a character that effectively mirrors society's outlook on traditional arts and languages.

The music of Katrathu Tamil, composed by the acclaimed Yuvan Shankar Raja, is an integral part of the film. The soundtrack and background score greatly enhance the emotive power of the film, adding to the poignancy of Prabhakar's journey. The lyrics of the songs, rich in Tamil literary content, synergize with the themes of the film and resonate with the protagonist's struggles.

Director Ram's narrative style in Katrathu Tamil is intense and introspective, inviting the audience to empathize with the protagonist's plight. The film uses nonlinear storytelling, flashing back and forth in time to reveal Prabhakar's past and how it shapes his present. This technique effectively draws the audience deeper into the psychological aspects of his character.

Cinematography is another standout aspect of the film, with the visual storytelling complementing the dramatic tension of the narrative. The framing, the play of light and shadow, and the thoughtful use of colors all contribute to the mood of the movie, enhancing its gritty and realistic feel.

Katrathu Tamil is not a conventional feel-good film. It challenges viewers to consider the harsh realities and moral dilemmas faced by individuals in modern society. It asks probing questions about what it means to be educated and how that education is valued by the world we live in.

The film garnered critical acclaim for its hard-hitting commentary on societal norms and its exploration of complex human emotions. Jeeva’s performance as Prabhakar was praised for its intensity and depth, establishing him as an actor capable of delivering nuanced and powerful performances. Anjali's debut was well-received, marking the start of a promising career in the Tamil film industry.

In essence, Katrathu Tamil is a poignant drama that delves into the psyche of an individual let down by the very system that was supposed to uplift him. The film is a poignant meditation on the value of language, the importance of recognizing one’s passion, and the consequences of a society that tends to marginalize the arts. It is a story told with conviction, and its message is sure to linger long after the closing credits.

KATRADHU TAMIZH

Critics Review

"Kattrathu Tamizh" is an off-beat film which has been made with a high cinematic skill and great imagination. Debutant director Ram has taken up a lofty theme and captures it in a manner that touches the hearts of the audience. Director Ram deserves all praise for his bold attempt. It's a rare treat, indeed. Katrathu Thamizh is hard hitting

Debutant director Ram's offering, however, tosses you through a maelstrom of emotions, before bringing you back to earth. And the actors he has used to drive his point home don't just act -- they live. The dialogues are crisp and supremely natural, the events zigzag swiftly enough that you don't lose interest, and best of all, all the players stay in character. (more)

Call this different?

Katradhu Tamizh with its telling tagline, ‘Tamizh M.A.,’ has some brilliant performances from Jeeva and Karunas. Lighting, tones and angles give the necessary amount of grayness to the narration and the art direction complements the mood. When you try to be different for the sake of being so, it only seems pseudo. Katradhu Tamizh is just that. (more)

Daringly different

Amidst clichéd commercial films, Rama Subbu(Ram) has daringly come out with a different film. Technically far superior than the contemporary films, the movie has catchy music by Yuvan. The cinematographer has caught the emotions of each character at his best. A rare film which must not be missed! (more)

Director Ram deserves a standing ovation for not bowing down to commercial format and sticking to his theme with strong conviction. The screenplay is brilliant and has certainly set the bar high; the movie swings back and forth the timeline with consummate ease without confusing the viewers. It is very hard to single out the best scenes as every single frame has been chiseled to perfection. (more)

Katradhu Tamil - makes you think

Ram has excelled in his directorial debut. The fiery dialogues, coupled with Jeeva’s excellent performance, make the movie a visual feast. Jeeva has outdone himself - easily his best role till date. Yuvan's music is a treat - blending with the story as easily as one breathes. The re-recording and editing have done wonders to the script. The camera is almost another character in the movie. Kattradhu Thamizh (2007) : Brief Review -. A very depressing film to watch which attempts to break the silence on social inequalities and torture with atrocious characterization.
