Research in architecture and VLSI is part of the Computer Systems Laboratory. Computer Systems research at Cornell encompasses both experimental and theoretical work growing out of topics in computer architecture, parallel computer architecture, operating systems and compilers, computer protocols and networks, programming languages and environments, distributed systems, VLSI design, and system specification and verification.

Faculty members with primary interests in the architecture and VLSI area include:

David Albonesi 's research interests include adaptive and reconfigurable multi-core and processor architectures, power- and reliability-aware computing, and high performance interconnect architectures using silicon nanophotonics. In addition to his academic experience, he has ten years of industry experience as a technical manager, computer architect, and chip designer at IBM and Prime Computer .

Christopher Batten 's research interests include energy-efficient parallel computer architecture for both high-performance and embedded applications. He is also interested in parallel programming models, interconnection networks, vector processing, VLSI chip design methodologies, and the intersection between computer architecture and future technologies such as 3D integration and silicon photonics.

Jose F. Martinez is associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and graduate field member of computer science at Cornell. He leads the M3 Architecture Research Group . His research work has earned several awards; among them: two IEEE Micro Top Picks papers; a HPCA Best Paper Award; a NSF CAREER Award; and two IBM Faculty Awards. On the teaching side, he has been recognized with a 2005 Kenneth A. Goldman '71 Excellence in Teaching Award, and as a 2007 Merrill Presidential Teacher. He also organizes the Computer Engineering Lecture Series.

Adrian Sampson designs hardware–software abstractions. His work on approximate computing pairs new computer architectures with new programming language constructs to let programmers safely trade off small amounts of accuracy for large returns in efficiency. Challenges in approximate programming range from information-flow control for safety to probabilistic program analysis and compiler design. Sampson is curious about new ways to safely give programmers control over system details that are ordinarily hidden from view.

G. Edward Suh 's research interests include computer systems in general with particular focus on computer architecture. He is interested in combining architectural techniques with low-level software to enhance various aspects of computing systems such as performance, security, and reliability.

Zhiru Zhang 's research investigates new algorithms, methodologies, and design automation tools for heterogeneous computing systems. Recent research projects focus on the topics of high-level synthesis, hardware specialization for machine learning, and programming models for software-defined FPGAs.

Innovative Curriculum

Northeastern offers a PhD in Computer Engineering that is completely research-based with minimal and flexible course requirements which can be pursued as full-time or part-time. As a computer engineering student at Northeastern, you will study computer architecture, software engineering, computer-aided design (VLSI), microprocessor-based design, and applied algorithms.

In addition to a broad background in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, this curriculum gives you solid foundation in both hardware and software design. RISC microprocessors, object-oriented Java, and cellular networks are just three of the technologies you will encounter in the program.

In the past ten years, the internet has revolutionized all aspects of our lives, from the way we communicate to the way we do business. Wireless communication, online commerce, medicine, and multimedia are examples of new applications that have transformed our world. Computer engineers developed the fundamental technologies that made the web possible, including high-performance microprocessors, gigabit networks, and object-oriented computer languages. Demand for computer engineers has increased dramatically in recent years. Students with a strong background in computer engineering are aggressively recruited by cutting-edge computer companies nationwide.

The ECE department offers a variety of graduate courses giving students the flexibility in planning their course requirements according to their research requirements and personal interests. Many graduate courses are offered in two sections; in-class and streaming video. Part-time students and full-time students who have schedule conflicts can register in the streaming video sections.

Experiential Learning

With a large number of high-tech firms in and around Boston, both start-ups and large multinational corporations, many PhD students do an internship during their program while remaining right here in Boston. Often their advisor is instrumental in identifying the internship position, with a funding sponsor or research collaborator, be they in Boston or elsewhere in the United States. Internships can be informally arranged for several months at any time during the calendar year.

PhD students can also take advantage of the more formally arranged co-op program which entails up to 8 months of work experience preceded by several professional development courses to prepare students. The Cooperative Education Program , also known as a “co-op,” is one of the largest and most innovative in the world, and Northeastern is one of only a few that offers a co-op program for graduate students. Through this program, students gain professional experience, employed in their field of interest as part of the academic curriculum.  Northeastern has more than 3,000 co-op employer partners. Another option for PhD students is the university’s Experiential PhD program.

Computer Science 152/252: CS152 Computer Architecture and Engineering CS252 Graduate Computer Architecture

Spring 2020, prof. krste asanović, tas: albert ou and yue dai.

Welcome to the Spring 2020 CS152 and CS252 web page. This semester the undergraduate and graduate computer architecture classes will be sharing lectures, and so the course web page has been combined.

CS152 is intended to provide a foundation for students interested in performance programming, compilers, and operating systems, as well as computer architecture and engineering. Our goal is for you to better understand how software interacts with hardware, and to understand how trends in technology, applications, and economics drive continuing changes in the field. The course will cover the different forms of parallelism found in applications (instruction-level, data-level, thread-level, gate-level) and how these can be exploited with various architectural features. We will cover pipelining, superscalar, speculative and out-of-order execution, vector machines, VLIW machines, multithreading, graphics processing units, and parallel microprocessors. We will also explore the design of memory systems including caches, virtual memory, and DRAM. An important part of CS152 is series of lab assignments using real microprocessor designs implemented in the Chisel hardware description language, and running as simulators and FPGA emulators hosted in the Amazon cloud (FireSim) . These simulators will give you an in-depth look at a variety of processor architectural techniques. Our objective is that you will understand all the major concepts used in modern microprocessors by the end of the semester.

CS252 is intended to provide essential background for students intending to pursue research in computer architecture or related fields, and also provides preparation for the Berkeley EECS computer architecture oral prelim examination. An important part of CS252 is reading and discussion of classic architecture papers, as well as a substantial course project.
