“The Gift of the Magi”

by O. Henry

Many gifts are unappreciated. Describe the best gift you have ever received to someone who has never seen it. Include at least two reasons it is the best gift you ever received.

Analyze the Prompt

On your paper, write the following:

Now look at the prompt again. Record the:

Topic: (What is the main idea?)

Audience: (Who will read your writing?)

Key words: (What are important words from the prompt?)

Stop and Think

Name the gift in a circle on your paper. Surround the circle with reasons and details about why your gift was great, such as the gift itself, who gave it, the occasion on which it was given, why it was given, etc.

Pick and Choose

Pick two or more reasons that your gift was great . Add or delete details surrounding those reasons as needed.

Plan it Out

Create a simple T-Chart:

Plan It Out

On your chart, put the big ideas in the yellow column and details about each big idea in the pink column .

Your chart should look like this:

Topic Sentence

Draw the following chart on your paper. Leave room to write a sentence in each box.

In the SDS box, write a Simple Declarative Sentence. Just state your main idea simply and clearly.

Example : The best gift I ever received was my frog picture.

In the # box, write a number sentence . Include a number word, either specific (like two ) or general (like several , many , or a few ).

Example : My frog picture is the best gift I ever received for two reasons.

In the ? box, write question sentence . This cannot be answered “yes” or “no,” but should be answered by the big ideas.

Example : Why is the frog picture on my wall my best gift ever?

In the S, S box, write a Situation, Stance sentence. Starting with a word like although , when , or if , give the situation first and then your main idea.

Example : If I had to choose one gift that stands out from the rest, it would be my frog picture.

After writing your four sentences:

  • Choose your favorite as the topic sentence . Label it T .
  • Choose another (but not the question) as the conclusion sentence Label it C .
  • Highlight both green .

Prior to the school lunch program, schools usually had a lunch hour in which children were permitted to go home to eat. However, most immigrant mothers worked and had to give their children money since no one was home during the day. Their children would use their money for buying pickles. While some schools served free lunch, others charged a small free. Immigrant settlement worker, Mabel Hyde Kittredge organized the School Lunch Committee, which served three cent lunches in some schools (Berrol 1970 ,139).
  • The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones O. Henry
