How to Withdraw Your College Applications

What’s covered:, what does withdrawing your application mean, when should i withdraw my application, how to withdraw a college application, does withdrawing affect your chances at other schools.

The word “withdraw” means to take back or take away. In terms of college applications, withdrawing your application means that you are no longer considering the school as a possible choice for you. There are several reasons why you might withdraw an application, including getting accepted ED to another school, receiving financial aid from other schools, being unsure whether you want to attend the school, and so forth. It is important to note that withdrawing your application will not hurt your chances at any other schools.

When you withdraw your application, you are cancelling your admission to the school. This can be done in a number of ways, but usually it is done by notifying the admissions office in writing. You will also need to notify any financial aid or scholarship offices that you are affiliated with. If you have already paid your tuition, you will likely be refunded most of your money.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best time to withdraw your college application will vary depending on your individual circumstances. However, there are a few reasons why you might withdraw your application.

1. You have been accepted ED to a school that is a better fit for you.

If you have been accepted ED to a school that is a better fit for you, you might want to withdraw your application from other schools so you can focus on the school to which you have been accepted.

2. You have received enough financial aid from other schools and do not want to take out loans in order to pay for tuition at the school you were applying to.

If you have received enough financial aid from other schools and do not want to take out loans in order to pay for tuition at the school you were applying to, then withdrawing your application might seem like a viable option.

3. You are unsure whether or not you really want to attend the school.

Whether it’s because of location, cost or other factors that you’re uncertain about, if you are not sure that you want to attend the school then withdrawing your application might seem like a good idea.

As you can see, there are many reasons why students might consider withdrawing their application.

When you withdraw your college application, it removes the chances of getting any admission offers from that particular school.  The process of withdrawing a college application is different for each institution.

Withdrawing Through College Portal

First, login to the website with your credentials pertaining to the institution which you are applying to.

Next, check on your application status in order to make sure that you are on the right page.

Afterwards, a new section will appear with a list of few options.

You may then select the “Withdraw Application” which is present at the bottom of the scrolling text box. Check out all your applications to make sure you’re withdrawing from them all, not just some!

Lastly, check out the confirmation of your withdrawn application.

Withdrawing By Email or Formal Letter

If you choose, you can withdraw your application by either emailing or writing a formal letter to the admission office.

The process is pretty much the same, but there are few differences.

First, check out your college’s applications website to find the email or mailing address of the school in order to send in applications.

Next look for the admissions office in the college and make sure you are addressing it properly like ‘Dear Admissions Officer,’ etc.

Be sure to state all your credentials including name, address and IDs that are connected to your application.

Then, wait for one whole business day before making any phone calls or checking on the email you have used for submitting withdrawal requests.

The process of withdrawing an application is different for each institution so be careful to follow all instructions provided by the admissions office before making withdrawals.

Withdrawing does not affect your chances at other schools. This is because your original application is still active and has not yet been reviewed by the college.

However, once you withdraw it will be reviewed that your application is incomplete or inactive, depending on how long it takes for you to get in touch with admissions. So try withdrawing through the college portal instead of mail if possible!

Also, check out on the schools that you have applied to and accepted offers from before withdrawing college applications.

If you withdraw from all the colleges to which you applied and got an acceptance letter, then your chances for getting in touch with any other college might be limited.

Withdrawing will not affect your chances of getting into another school, but withdrawing early can hurt your chances at getting financial aid packages.

T hat is why it’s important to weigh all your options carefully before withdrawing any college applications.

How to Withdraw Your College Application

December 15, 2022

You entered the college admissions crucible in Fall 2022 as an “applicant” and emerged as an “accepted student.” This glorious metamorphosis deserves to be met with excessive celebration. It’s a time to ceremoniously put down a deposit at the college of your dreams, purchase an obscene amount of clothing bearing your school’s colors and crest, and begin resisting the urge to let senioritis fully overrun your academic immune system. Amidst the ecstasy and exaltations of the moment, it’s easy to overlook the mundane tasks that still lie before you. One such task involves notifying the unlucky institutions who will not have the fortune of being graced with your presence next fall. Then you can check “withdraw college application” off of your to-do list.

Communicating your intentions to the schools to which you have applied and/or been accepted but will not be attending is not nearly as fun as slapping a bumper sticker on your mom’s car or shopping for dorm accessories. However, it is an essential chore to squeeze in around these more exciting celebratory activities.

Reasons for canceling an application

Let’s begin by reviewing all of the conceivable reasons why someone would need to cancel applications:

  • You were an ED admit at another college.
  • You were an EA admit at another college and have decided to attend.
  • You are no longer interested in a particular college where you applied.
  • The financial aid package offered was not large enough to cover costs.
  • You’ve received all college decisions and made your selection.

As you can see, some students will be doing this before the winter holidays following an EA/ED decision while others will be withdrawing applications in the spring.

Withdraw through the application portal

If this option exists, you should be able to withdraw your application online in a matter of moments. Some schools provide simple instructions for how students can withdraw an application. For example, Northeastern asks students to log into their school account and fill out a “decline admission” form. Drexel University applicants are instructed to log into Discover Drexel and select the “I want to withdraw my application” option.

Harvard, on the other hand, allows you to withdraw through their application portal or write an email to the admissions office following specific guidelines .

What if I can’t find how to withdraw my application?

If students can’t withdraw their application through their application portal, and no specific instructions are easily found, we recommend that students contact their assigned admissions counselor by e-mail and include the following info:

  • Full address
  • Assigned application ID (if applicable)
  • Application type (freshman or transfer)
  • Application term

Application withdrawal – Why it’s important

Promptly notifying the schools that you will not be attending is more than just a courteous thing to do. It is also an essential step in helping to keep the larger college ecosystem thriving. Institutions are frantically trying to calculate their yield rate—the percentage of accepted students that will attend—and need this information ASAP so they know how many students to admit. On a more relatable level, somewhere in the world, there is a flesh-and-blood teenager just like you, whose admissions fate at their number one choice depends on you completing this simple task. Taking a few minutes to withdraw your application will set off a massive celebration in another applicant’s home. Who wouldn’t want that positive karma?

Can I put down multiple deposits?

We receive this question from time-to-time from parents/students who have a) still not decided among their top choices, or b) are still negotiating a better financial aid package. Our answer is always a simple one—no.

Putting down multiple deposits is unethical. This is because you are essentially forcing two or more schools to reserve a spot for you when, in truth, you will only be attending one. This hurts the university, as it hinders their ability to accurately predict enrollment. It also hurts applicants on the waitlist at those schools since you are essentially falsely occupying a spot that could otherwise belong to them.

Key Takeaways – withdraw application

  • Whether during the early or regular admissions cycle, most applicants will eventually find themselves needing to withdraw their application from one or more colleges.
  • Many schools explicitly state the directions for withdrawal.
  • A fair number of colleges do not post clear instructions for withdrawing an application. In this case, use our template above.
  • Taking a moment to withdraw your applications is part of being a responsible citizen in the world of college admissions. Your cancellation will help both the college and a fellow applicant who desperately wants to attend that school.

Example of Admission Cancellation Letter

My application for the Master of Business Administration program was recently accepted. As such, I paid all of my fees in accordance with the department’s instructions. I am the oldest family member; my father passed away just four days ago. In my father’s absence, I must now take care of all the obligations and requirements of my family.

My father worked a private job while borrowing money from a friend while pay for my university tuition. My family already relied on very little money. Therefore, I must now pay back the borrowed money. And I kindly ask that you reimburse me for all of the fees I have already paid. I am including copies of the deposit slips and challan form for your reference and will give you the original if required.

Please give me your blessing so I can get the fees refunded.

Yours Sincerely

If you decide to attend ASU during a different semester than your deferment semester, contact  Admission Services .

Admitted undergraduate students can defer their admission before their first semester of enrollment.

If you have questions about deferring before you receive an admission decision,  please contact your personal admission representative .

Why should I defer my admission?

If you have decided to delay your first semester at ASU, you should defer your admission. Consider your options carefully before taking this step.

Typical reasons for deferring your admission include:

  • Religious volunteer work.
  • Volunteer service.
  • U.S. military service.
  • U.S. citizens in international military service.
  • Non-U.S. citizen in international military service.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through the steps to write an effective cancellation letter, share personal insights, and provide a handy template to streamline your writing process.

  • Step-by-Step Guide: Follow a detailed, easy-to-navigate guide to writing your cancellation letter.
  • Template Provided: Use the provided template to easily craft your letter without missing key details.

Step 1: Start with Clear Identification

Trending Now: Find Out Why!

Step 2: clearly state your intent.

The opening paragraph should directly state your intention to cancel your application. Be concise but polite, ensuring there’s no room for misunderstanding.

Personal Insight:

From experience, I’ve learned that clarity is key. You want the recipient to understand your purpose without having to sift through unnecessary details.

Step 3: Provide Relevant Details

Mention specific details related to your application, such as the program, position, or account you’re referring to. This helps the recipient quickly identify the matter at hand.

“I am writing to formally cancel my application for the Master’s program in Environmental Science, submitted on February 1, 2024.”

Step 4: Offer a Reason (Optional)

While not mandatory, offering a brief explanation for your cancellation can maintain a cordial relationship with the institution or company.

In my experience, providing a reason for cancellation shows respect and professionalism. However, keep it brief and avoid overly personal or detailed explanations.

Step 5: Express Appreciation

Thank the recipient for their time and consideration. This gesture of goodwill can leave a positive impression and keep the door open for future interactions.

Step 6: Close Formally

End your letter with a formal closing, such as “Sincerely” or “Best regards,” followed by your signature (if sending a physical letter) and typed name.

“Sincerely,

[Your Signature, if sending a hard copy]

Jane Doe”

Step 7: Proofread and Send

Review your letter for any spelling or grammatical errors. A well-written letter reflects your professionalism and attention to detail.

Template for Letter of Cancellation of Application:

Personal Tips from Experience:

  • Be Timely: Don’t delay sending your cancellation letter. Prompt communication shows respect for the recipient’s time.
  • Keep It Professional: Even if you’re frustrated or disappointed, maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, when do college acceptance letters arrive.

Hey everyone! Just wondering, when do college acceptance letters usually start coming in? I'm trying to plan my senior year calendar and I want to know when I should expect to start hearing back from schools. Thanks!

Hi there! The timeline for college acceptance letters can vary depending on the type of application and the specific schools you've applied to. Here's a general breakdown to help you plan:

1. Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA): If you've applied to colleges through Early Decision or Early Action, you can usually expect to receive decisions around mid-December. Some schools may release their decisions slightly earlier or later, so be sure to check each institution's website for specific dates.

2. Regular Decision: For Regular Decision applications, most colleges send out decisions between late March and early April. There's typically more variation in these dates, so again, it's a good idea to check the websites of the schools you've applied to for any announced decision release dates.

3. Rolling Admissions: For colleges with rolling admissions, decisions are sent out on an ongoing basis, usually beginning in the fall and continuing through the spring. In this case, you may receive a decision within a few weeks of submitting your application, depending on the school and when you applied.

Keep in mind that these timeframes are just rough estimates, and the exact dates may differ based on each school's specific schedule. To stay updated on your application status, it's best to regularly check your email and the college's application portal. Good luck with your applications, and I hope you receive some great news soon!

College graduation canceled due to anti-war protests? It's happened before.

When societal upheaval stretches to affect colleges’ end-of-year celebrations, it’s often an indicator that the country is navigating an important political and cultural moment, experts say..

application letter for cancellation of admission in college

As protests continue to disrupt campuses, college leaders across the country have begun asking themselves a difficult question while they scramble to plan graduation ceremonies: Should we cancel?

It’s not a decision they take lightly, though many have likely tackled the conundrum before. Natural disasters, public health concerns and security risks occasionally prompt school leaders to consider altering or nixing commencement ceremonies out of an abundance of caution.

The bar is high. But campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war appear to be meeting it – at least at some schools, including New York's Columbia University, which has been the nexus of student activism and demands for college administrators to sever economic ties with Israel. On Monday, Columbia canceled its main graduation event, which was slated for mid-May. It will hold smaller, school-based ceremonies instead.

“These past few weeks have been incredibly difficult for our community,” Columbia’s administrators wrote in an update Monday.

College protests live updates: Columbia cancels main commencement; universities crackdown on encampments

The University of Southern California made a similar call last month, following dozens of arrests and the cancelation of the Los Angeles campus' valedictorian speaker . Emory University in Atlanta this week relocated its festivities.

This year is by no means the first time commencement ceremonies were thrown into disarray. Throughout American history, social unrest, including mass anti-war protests, has impeded the traditional pomp and circumstance that marks the culmination of college for students and their families. Experts say when cultural upheaval on campus hinders colleges’ ability to hold end-of-year celebrations, it can be an indicator that society is experiencing an important political and cultural moment.

But anyone who calls the recent tumult "unprecedented" is missing the mark, said Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University who studies the history of higher education in the U.S.

“This has happened over and over and over,” she said.

Pandemic aftershocks reverberate

The COVID-19 pandemic was the last major disruptor of college graduations. As the virus spread, social-distancing became the norm, and many schools scrapped their ceremonies to prevent mass infections. In the early 20th century, when higher education was much less widely available to people in the U.S., the Spanish flu similarly derailed graduation ceremonies and college sporting events.

Many seniors set to graduate from Columbia and USC – and other campuses contemplating cancelation – never got to cross a stage in a cap and gown to receive their high school diplomas. Instead, they marked the end of 12th grade with drive-through and Zoom ceremonies. Though the pandemic upended the traditional college-going experience for broad swaths of American students, the Class of 2024 has been hit hardest, sandwiched in between two highly unpredictable chapters in American society – a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and a new war in the Middle East, both of which have caused profound cultural fracturing.

Natural disasters have plagued the commencement tradition, too. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes drenched central Pennsylvania in 19 inches of rain. The calamitous flooding that year forced Penn State Harrisburg to cancel the event, according to the school's website . Hurricanes Irma and Harvey in 2017 had the same impacts for some students.

Echoes of another anti-war era

Public reaction to U.S. involvement in armed conflicts has long interfered with college graduations, dating back to World War I and during World War II . Historians have also drawn throughlines between today’s anti-war movement and young people’s opposition to the Vietnam War and South African apartheid.

Student demonstrators at Columbia, an Ivy League school, took over the Manhattan campus in 1968 to protest the university’s ties to a war-connected think tank (and plans for a gym that would have been functionally segregated). The demonstrations led to mass arrests, not unlike those seen in recent weeks on the same campus.

The Columbia situation, explained: Alumni pressure and a crime-fighting mayor helped set the stage for another round of arrests

Administrators eventually capitulated to the students' demands and Columbia’s commencement ceremony took place that year, though it was held several blocks from campus. Instead of the school’s then-president addressing the crowd, a history professor gave the keynote speech .

Then came the Kent State shootings. In May 1970, National Guardsmen shot and killed four students at the public university in Kent, Ohio, during demonstrations over the Vietnam War. Nine others were wounded, including a freshman who was paralyzed as a result of the shooting.

Kent State shootings: Paralyzed by a bullet, he still loves Kent State, urges others to be 'good citizens'

The ordeal ultimately gave rise to a widespread student strike that closed hundreds of colleges and worsened already-souring public sentiment over the war.

Graduation ceremonies were another casualty of the Kent State shootings. New York's Hunter College scrapped its end-of-year event and invited the Class of 1970 back to walk the stage nearly a decade later, the New York Times reported in 1979. On May 5, 1970, Boston University's school council also voted to cancel exams and skip commencement . Those students ultimately walked the stage 40 years afterward.

In the ensuing decades, colleges started to decentralize their graduation ceremonies, according to John Thelin, a higher education historian and the author of “Going to College in the Sixties.” Many schools began to hold smaller, more intimate events for students to receive their diplomas alongside classmates enrolled in similar degree programs. It's a trend that has continued and will likely make it possible for many Columbia graduates to don their robes and still have a somewhat traditional send-off.

Despite the historical parallels, college campuses are far more diverse and inclusive than they were five decades ago. On the whole, that's a good thing, Thelin said. But it also has created new challenges for administrators when it comes to navigating issues as complex and personal as the war in the Middle East.

“An irony is that with diversity, in addition to harmony, you also have a chance for disagreement,” Thelin said. “The chances for some spark of tension within the ranks of a campus are greater than they were.”

University letters of recommendation: an essential guide

Letters of recommendation can make or break a student’s university application, so it’s important that we get them right

There are a plethora of documents that go into compiling the perfect college application. From transcripts to predicted grades, activity lists, resumés or CVs, essays, recommendation letters, certificates and more – each element of the application holds a different purpose and separate weight of importance, often varying from country to country and university to university.

By the senior year (Year 13), academics are nearly finalised, so there’s little wiggle room when it comes to improving that element of the application: senior GPA is set and calculated; IB predictions are nearly issued.

But beyond academics, some universities require recommendation letters, and this is where a student can stand out more, highlighting and emphasising their skills, qualities and abilities.

These recommendation letters can sometimes illuminate the true heart and soul of the student, beyond their transcripts or personal-statement essay. The words in these letters can make or break a student’s application, so it’s important we get them right and tell their story with the thought and effort it deserves.

Teacher letters of recommendation

In a teacher’s recommendation letter, students are brought to life beyond their grades, showcasing their holistic potential.

Teachers seize the chance to praise consistent academic excellence, to spotlight specific projects or skills, and to contextualise grade fluctuations resulting from personal circumstances.

These letters illustrate growth, revealing students’ readiness for university life. The emphasis is on articulating acquired skills and potential – a narrative far more impactful than grades alone. While an A-grade student may excel in tests, a B-grade student might exhibit invaluable traits, such as grit and resilience, best articulated through personalised advocacy.

Recommendation letter timelines

To support students and teachers, it’s important to highlight the importance of the teacher recommendation letter early on to teachers and students alike. Let students know as early as grades 10 and 11 (Years 11 and 12) that it’s important to build relationships with teachers well in advance of senior year. The best letters come from those teachers who have an excellent rapport with the student in question.

Ask students in the spring of junior year (Year 12) to select those teachers they would like recommendation letters from. The recommendation should ideally come from a core-subject teacher (maths, science, social studies, English) rather than an elective teacher, unless the elective is a field in which they intend to pursue a career.

To support the teachers, we work with students to compile what we call a brag sheet. Students answer a series of questions about themselves, in order to give the teacher the best context for writing the letter.

We tell teachers that if the student does not provide this brag sheet, or if they feel that the student has not performed well enough in their class to deserve a letter, they are allowed to respectfully decline the request to write the letter.

We also remind teachers that they do not need to agree to write any more than 20 letters. It is unfair if students all ask one teacher – who may then end up writing 60 letters – for a recommendation letter, while other teachers only have to write a few.. With that in mind, we also remind students of the importance of being organised and requesting the letter from their preferred teacher early on.

Writing the letters

Here are some examples of the questions we ask students on their brag sheets, which then give teachers a starting point for their letters:

  • What do you hope this letter will show about you that your GPA doesn’t?
  • What was a challenge that you faced in this class, and what actions did you take to overcome it?
  • Describe how this class influenced you, either through academic content or teacher interaction.
  • Give between one and three examples of times when you have exceeded expectations with your communication skills, and also some areas where you can reflect that you may need growth.
  • What majors or careers interest you?

To support the teachers further, we host a writing workshop in the spring of each year to give them examples of strong and weak letters (all confidential). We coach them in "show, don't tell" when it comes to writing about students’ strengths, as well as giving them concrete examples of how best to advocate for students and highlight their strengths.

We review what each different country’s universities desire from these letters, as some universities – such as the US – appreciate a holistic view of the student (for example, highlighting student athletes or detailing extracurriculars). By contrast, the UK is very academic-focused and prefers to read about the student’s abilities when working on class projects, research and outside endeavours in the field of study.

Counsellor recommendation letters

Some universities – mostly in the US – also allow a counsellor letter of recommendation. This letter goes beyond academic ability in the classroom and speaks more to students’ characteristics, personality, outside involvement and external factors helpful for an admission committee to review in the context of other application documents.

The counsellor’s role is to fill in the missing pieces of an application: we help identify and tell a student’s story, covering any hardships, exceptional leadership abilities, impressive commitment to community and so on.

Now more than ever, admission committees are telling us that they trust the counsellor and teacher letters to help give them the full picture of a student, and to help them judge whether or not they will be the best fit for their incoming class and able to thrive on their campus.

We send our students what we call a junior questionnaire, in order to collect the information necessary to write these letters successfully.

Some examples of the questions on the junior questionnaire:

  • What languages do you speak, and to what level of fluency?
  • Please provide some details about your family and highlight any diversity and/or adversity that you have experienced.
  • Have there been any major circumstances that have impacted on your personal or academic life?
  • What are three adjectives you would use to describe yourself? Think deeply about this one.
  • How have you used your time outside of school, and can you elaborate on any particular projects, clubs, work experience, internships, or volunteer work that speaks to consistency in an activity, leadership experience or a particular commitment to have an impact on your community?

External letters

Sometimes students may wish to have an outside recommendation letter from a coach – for example, if they are a student athlete.

Overall, references should be academic-focused, but some universities that accept more than one letter are willing to receive one from an outside observer, too. In these cases, the person should be someone who oversees the student as the coach of a sport or the supervisor of an internship or work-experience programme.

The external referee should give this letter to the counsellor to send off on their behalf, as all recommendation letters must confidential and never shared with the student.
