Prime Minister Winston Churchill's defeat in the British General Election of 1945 changed the course of the Potsdam Conference.

Seventy-five years ago this month, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, and Joseph Stalin gathered in Potsdam, near the smoking ruins of Berlin, to discuss the final showdown with Japan and the fate of the postwar world. The war in Europe had been won, but victory in the Pacific was still two months away.

But after nine meetings over eight days, and with another week of the conference remaining, Churchill had to return to London for the results of the general election that had been held a few weeks before. Millions of British servicemen stationed abroad had cast their votes, and it took weeks for their ballots to be received and counted.

Both Truman and Stalin looked on with some bemusement; the American president, who had recently succeeded the late Franklin Roosevelt, had the luxury of a fixed term of office, while the Soviet dictator never faced such concerns. Both were confident that Churchill would soon rejoin them; Lord Moran, Churchill’s personal physician, left most of his baggage behind in anticipation of a swift return.

And yet, there was trouble in the air: recent by-elections had seen Government candidates badly defeated. The British people had been denied a general election for a decade, and there was a palpable desire for change. Some wished to punish the Conservatives for their previous policy of appeasement, while others sought a more equitable future. An official government report by economist Albert Beveridge, calling for a massive expansion of the welfare state, became Labour’s blueprint for the years to come. The party’s slogan, “Let Us Face the Future,” caught the imagination of a people exhausted by war and ready to reap the rewards of peace. Labour was led by Clement Attlee, Churchill’s deputy prime minister in the coalition Government, whose quiet demeanor, obvious decency, and heroic service in the Great War insulated him from charges of radicalism.

But Churchill believed in his star and trusted that Britain would reward his valiant leadership.

The end of the war in Europe had spurred Labour to withdraw in May from the Coalition government formed five years before. The party chafed at their subordinate role and yearned for untrammeled power. Churchill was thus transformed from a national to a mere party leader, an uncomfortable shift for a man grown accustomed to speaking for his whole nation.

Churchill had been consumed with the fight with Germany and could not bring the same passion to bear on postwar domestic issues. This was ironic, as earlier in his career he had been one of the early architects of the welfare state.

The campaign was a difficult one, as the great war leader occasionally found himself confronted with hostile voters on the stump. And he did himself no favors when he declared in a speech that “No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently worded expressions of public discontent. They would have to fall back on some sort of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance.” This was a brutal attack on his loyal coalition partners, and unworthy of him.

Somehow he sensed the coming loss. He woke early on the morning of July 26—the day the results were to be declared—with what he later recalled was “a sharp stab of almost physical pain. A hitherto subconscious conviction that we were beaten broke forth and dominated my mind…The power to shape the future would be denied me.” 

The results came in throughout that fateful day, and Churchill followed them from his map room in the Number 10 Annexe, his home for much of the war. It was soon apparent that he would not be returning to Potsdam. Labour won a crushing victory, with 393 seats to the Conservatives’ 213. To add insult to injury, a large majority of the service vote went for Labour, deserting the man who had led them for five years and sung their praises in immortal prose. Abraham Lincoln, by contrast, won reelection to the presidency over George C. McClellan in 1864 by an electoral college vote of 212 to 21 (55 percent to 45 percent in the popular vote), in part because of his overwhelming share of the soldiers’ vote.

Churchill’s wife, Clementine, tried to cheer him by up saying that the defeat might be “a blessing in disguise.” He grimly replied, “At the moment it seems quite effectively disguised.”

King George VI had been reluctant to appoint Churchill in 1940, sharing the establishment’s disdain for him. But over the course of the war he grew close to his prime minister and was saddened by his defeat. In recognition of his peerless service and in consolation for his loss, the King offered Churchill the Order of the Garter, the highest honor in his gift. But Churchill declined, noting ruefully that the British people had just given him “the order of the boot”.

The British general election of 1945 has come to be seen as history’s greatest example of democratic ingratitude. Churchill had led the nation through its darkest hour and guided it to victory, only to be hurled from office. Americans especially have long been baffled by it. But he felt no bitterness toward the British people; with characteristic magnanimity, he said simply, “they have had a very hard time.”

‘a blessing in disguise’: meaning and origin

The phrase a blessing in disguise designates an apparent misfortune that works to the eventual good of the recipient.

This hackneyed phrase occurred, for example, in Sarah’s Stars , by Sarah Delamere Hurding, published in the Irish Independent (Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland) of Tuesday 1 st December 2009 [Vol. 118, No. 286, page 28, column 7]:

Aquarius 21 January to 19 February Leave what is done with in the past and do not call it back in with negative thinking. Routine is a nuisance; but you gotta do what you gotta do ! A clash of wills turns out to be a blessing in disguise. So be philosophical and do not panic. Expect this to be a whirlwind stretch. You may not even have time to think.

The phrase seems to have first been used in the plural form blessings in disguise in the first half of the 18 th century; the earliest occurrences that I have found are as follows, in chronological order:

1 -: From Book III of A Poem on the Last Day ( Oxford : Printed at the Theatre for Edward Whistler, 1713), by Edward Young, Fellow of All-Souls College, Oxon [page 58]:

Us’d with Art, and rightly understood, All Dispensations from Above are Good; And tho’ with frightfull Aspect they Surprize; Most Ills are only Blessings in Disguise.

2 -: From Sermon VII. Patience under Afflictions an Ornament to Religion , in Several Sermons, chiefly upon Practical Subjects, many of which were preached before Her Present Majesty , when Princess of Wales (London: Printed for R. Gosling and E. Symon, 1730), by the Church of England clergyman and poet Nicholas Brady (1659-1726) [page 140]:

We [are] apt to call in question God’s Goodness, when we find our selves encompassed by manifold Calamities, but if we reflect that they are designed as Medicines, to melt down a hard Heart, or heal a wounded Conscience; if we consider, that these light Afflictions, which are but for a Moment, are to rescue us from endless Ages of insupportable Torments, and to work for us a more exceeding and eternal weight of Glory, we cannot be so far biassed by our present Sense of them, as not chearfully to submit to them, and adore that Goodness, which draweth Consequences from them so much to our Advantage. We are told, that whom the Lord loveth those he chasteneth, and he even chasteneth whilst he loveth them; his very Judgments are but Blessings in disguise; and we may so sanctify them by a Christian Resignation, as to make them bring forth the peaceable Fruits of Righteousness, to such as are duly exercised thereby.

3 -: From Reflections on a Flower-Garden. In a Letter to a Lady ( London : Printed for J. and J. Rivington and J. Leaks, 1746), by the Church of England clergyman and author James Hervey (1714-1758) [page 76]:

Since all the downward Tracts of Time God’s watchful Eye surveys; O! who so wise to chuse our Lot, And regulate our Ways? Since none can doubt his equal Love, Unmeasurably kind; To his unerring, gracious Will, Be ev’ry Wish resign’d. Good when He gives, supremely Good; Nor less, when He denies; Ev’n Crosses from his sov’reign Hand Are Blessings in Disguise.

A blessing in disguise

Right, sit down and take a deep breath. Things might not have gone quite to plan, but there is a whole range of new opportunities open to you now in Clearing. And variety is, after all, the spice of life. So hold your head up high and get ready to make some exciting choices. Here, students who have had first-hand experience of Clearing prove that when things don't go exactly as you'd envisaged, it can actually be a blessing in disguise.

Bobbi Hartshorne, 19, is doing educational studies at the University of York

Originally I had applied to six universities for history and education combined with drama and performing arts. I was predicted an A at English literature at A-level, but I failed my final exam, which brought my grade down to a C - it was a bit of a shock. I was accepted at two places and rejected by the other four, so that did not leave me with much choice.

I looked at the Clearing lists to see what other universities were offering similar courses and what else York, my first choice, was offering. They had two BA (hons) degrees in Clearing - IT and management, which did not appeal at all, and education, which I had never considered before. I read the prospectus to see what it was all about and realised it was something I was very interested in.

I told York my results and they put me at the top of their reserve list. Then they rang back a day later and said they were going to squeeze me in because they thought I was really suitable for the course. I was chuffed.

The course has opened my eyes. It is really varied - I can study English and drama through an education perspective, and the history of education. I definitely want to teach now. Education leads nicely into primary teaching so I have got my future planned out, which I doubt I would have, had I done English.

Marc Wratten, 19, is studying international management with French at the University of Bath

I needed to get three As, but I got two As and a C in French. The admissions tutor at Bath said he did not think they would be able to take me. He suggested I either spend a year in France, and they would take me next year, or that I go through Clearing. I decided on Clearing because I wanted to get university under way.

I knew nothing about the process so I read some newspapers and looked at the Ucas website. At first you think, "Oh no, what's going to happen now?" But the good thing about Clearing is the range of courses - it is not an end-of-the-world situation because there are lots of different choices.

It happened really quickly: once I had my results I was on the phone. I had to be persistent with a couple of universities because there were so many people ringing them; I must have tried 20 times to get through to one. But once you do get through, the staff are really nice and easy to talk to. All they wanted were my A-level results. I had six offers by the second or third day. I had pretty much said yes to Aston, then two or three days later Bath contacted me to say a place had become available and if I wanted it, it was mine. It was quite a week.

Lauren Whitehouse, 19, is studying law with human resource management at the University of Ulster

Queen's and Newcastle were my first two choices; their grades were AAA and AAB. My grades were ABB. It was dreadful, I was absolutely shaken. Newcastle turned me down first. Queen's held on but I found out they were holding me for a maths degree. Maths was one of my other options but I was determined to get into a law course.

One of the teachers talked me through the steps in Clearing. I looked at a newspaper guide, narrowed it down to the best possibilities, and the teacher phoned them. It was terrifying because I was sitting there thinking: have they already filled their places, what happens if I cannot get on to a law course anywhere?

My teachers told me about Brunel, and my mum worked at the University of Ulster, so she went to talk to them through Clearing. It was quite a hard decision because Brunel is a straight law course and Ulster is a split course. But it all came down to money - we were not sure whether I could afford the sandwich course at Brunel, and as it is in London, living costs are sky high.

I love the campus I am on. It is beautiful and friendly, and I have got great lecturers. On the law course, we practise mock courts and it has confirmed that I really want to be a lawyer.

Anita Bowyer, 58, is studying contemporary textiles at Carmarthenshire College (West Wales School of the Arts)

I did an access course in illustration and became fascinated with textiles. I went to Winchester to study it and did nearly a year there when, for personal reasons, a move to Wales was brought forward. I was left high and dry because I did not want to commute that distance.

Clearing had been discussed on the access course so I spoke to my old tutor, who suggested I approach West Wales. Because of everything that had to be done for the move, I did not contact the college until August. I called in and spoke to the head of fashion and textiles, who interviewed me there and then, and said I could apply. The administration staff at the college were very helpful, as was Ucas.

I absolutely love the course. We do still life and painting, weaving, monoprint and silkscreen printing, and knitting, and we have been working with new media. If I get a high enough grade, I would like to do an MA. My plan is to set up a small business.

I was nervous about going back into education, but I would encourage anyone to do it. I have met students much older than I am who are bouncing around absolutely full of it; they are going to take the world by storm, and that is how I feel.

Zann Zakariya is studying biomedical engineering with applied physics at City University, London

I went into Clearing because I changed my mind. I was going to do aeronautical engineering, but I decided to do biomedical engineering instead because there are so many more opportunities.

When my results came, I looked in the newspaper and in prospectuses. My mum helped me by writing out the course names and numbers. All I had to do was call the universities, tell them my grades and say which course I wanted to do. Some asked me to come in to be interviewed, but others gave me a straight yes or no. I was surprised at how straightforward the process was. It was just based on grades.

I was offered chemical engineering at University College London, but it was not what I really wanted to do. I was pleased when I got into City for biomedical.

The first year has been hard work. We are given a lot of independence - no one is on your back giving you homework, which is a bit weird.

I did want to be a pilot but I am changing my mind again. I am enjoying my degree so I might get a job in biomedical engineering. I have always got the option to be a pilot, because all I need is a degree to get sponsors, and I am applying for jobs at Heathrow for the summer, just in case.

George Gunn, 34, is studying civil engineering at the University of Abertay, Dundee

I went to the opportunity centre in Fife and a jobs adviser looked at my previous work, with British Coal and on building sites, and recommended that I speak to a tutor at the university about studying civil engineering. I did not think that much of the idea because I was quite old.

I phoned the tutor and he invited me to have a chat with him. I gathered together all my qualifications, including my youth training scheme certificate for British Coal. The qualifications did not mean much because they were 18 years old, but he said he would be glad to have me on the course.

I got a bit of help completing the Ucas form from a student adviser and I went straight in at Clearing. I was over the moon to get a place but I was quite nervous about going to university, so I asked the course tutor if there were any courses I could do to get me into the swing of learning again. He suggested the summer school. I did a month's course and it was excellent - we did study skills, IT skills and how to use the university library.

I have just completed my first year and it has been great. We have done geology, environmental studies and structural design. I would love to go abroad, ideally to Australia, to work in structural engineering when I finish, and maybe with the environment.

A blessing in disguise: Lockdown and learning

The closure of schools for quite a long time due coronavirus epidemic has brought the process of teaching and learning to the forefront. At times one wonder has the Covid-19 had exposed the shortcomings of our school education system. If one takes it as an opportunity to reform the existing system, surely our society and hence the country can benefit in the long run.

Since Independence, we have never attempted to change our system of education to the local needs. We have to a great extent followed what the British had formulated. Though New Education Policies are brought out on regular intervals, the basic framework had remained the same – the curriculum, the examinations and the transactional methods.

Let us understand how the lockdown due to coronavirus epidemic has shaken the root of our education system. Let me move from backwards.

1. Transactional Methods: All this time our teaching process was chalk and talk. We had given priority to the syllabus completion for tests and examinations sake. We have done very little in the areas of experiential learning with activity-based and project-based learning approaches. The rote learning being the norm, the students, as well as teachers, are not aware of creative and innovative thinking.

To a great extent, our Teacher Education system remains so primitive that new technology-based teaching had not been fully incorporated. If the newly trained teachers state itself is still wanting then one can imagine the state of an older order. Many schools have installed Smart Boards and Smart Classes, still, the utilisation by and large in many schools is feeble. Unlike other countries who have adopted blended learning and flip classrooms, we in India were not prepared for online classes. With the sudden outbreak of COVID-19, this lacune inherent in our system is open.

2. Examinations: We follow the outdated system of year-end assessment (Non-semester System) or term-end assessment (Semester System). Again the examinations are memory-based whether objective or subjective. The weightage is given more to the knowledge component rather than understanding and application of the concepts. This has killed the curiosity amongst learners and innovative approaches were never tried in full scale with the fear of syllabus completion for the sake of examinations. Brilliant minds are blunted with our teaching-learning strategies which are purely adapted for standardised board examinations.

3. Curriculum: Through the curriculum is broad, in India the syllabus is given priority. Since Independence, the core subjects have remained the same. They are a feeder system to colleges where the courses had been almost unchanged. Many times cosmetic changes had been introduced, due to career choices, we had stuck to the basic sciences, commerce and arts. With a vast syllabus, it is virtually impossible to complete even a part of it due to paucity of time. Now the question arises to what part of the syllabus to be taught and what to be cut. It can not be done at random as it will affect the seamless transition from one class to the next.

The coronavirus epidemic might have opened the mythical Pandora’s box, it’s high time we reframed our education policy to Indian needs rather than blaming Lord Macaulay who formulated an education system for India some 250 years back with a different motive in mind.

Urbanization is a much more civilised form of life than our usual standard of living. This form of livelihood is supported by technology, equipment and machinery aiding in the day to day activities in the house, as well as in for employment purposes. It has even the ideal of travelling, at every point of urban life. The question at hand is whether this mechanical fast life is a blessing in disguise.

The phenomenon of urbanization has been upheld since the Mesopotamia era. One of the oldest cities of the world, Rome, has experienced Urbanization in the second century. And the phenomenon has only grown rapidly since the industrial revolution.

However, India, among the other third world countries, has not experienced Urbanization to the required level in accordance with increasing its economic growth in proportion with the high population density. It is a slow process, yet it is surely happening.

What is Urbanization?

Urbanization refers to the population shift from rural areas to urban areas, the gradual increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas, and the ways in which each society adapts to this change. It is the process whereby people of urban area increases many fold as compared with people surrounding rural area.

Urban and rural are the two important parts of India. As the time evolves, people from the rural area are shifting to a more urban space. Most of them move to the urban areas in search of job, some for health and other reasons. Urbanization is in fact an important parameter of social-economic structure of a region.

They even play a vital part in the progress of any economy. Of course, there is wide range of difference in the definition of an urban area. In Argentina, a population of more than 2000 people in a settlement constitutes an urban area whereas in Canada, if there is a house every two hundred metres, the area is considered to be urban.

Urbanization has three main characteristics. Firstly, it involves an increase in the population concentration, also known as population density. Population density is the number of people that can be found at any given time in the year in an area of one square kilometre. When Urbanization occurs in a country, there are several points of increased population density.

Secondly, these points grow larger in size. As the population increases, more area is required for habitation purposes. Hence the area used expands. More often than not, it extends onto forested or agricultural land.

Lastly, with the rise in Urbanization, there is a distinct change in the occupational bias. One observes a transfer from agricultural to non-agricultural occupation.

Economic Advantages of Urbanization

The first and most important advantage of Urbanization is the economic development. The economic structure of a country is affected by this process in three different ways. Firstly, urban areas, cities and towns act as an engine for production of raw material. In addition, it also provides a market.

Satisfactory purchasing power and a high demand provides the necessary impetus required for the growth of industries. This leads to the all-round economic development of the area.

Secondly, urbanization is an important index of the socio-economic structure of a region because urban centers have a special role to play in its development. In the statistical sense, urbanization connotes to the ratio of urban population to the total population size, its characteristics and the administrative setup of a particular area. Statistics reveal that nearly half of the world’s population lives in cities.

Lastly, urbanization and industrialization go hand in hand and are positively correlated with each other. Each one determines the other’s development. It is an established fact that urbanization is always accompanied with industrialization and vice versa. In urban areas, there is a huge concentration of industries and other related activities which act as pulling forces for people from rural area, thus proving as a blessing in disguise.

Industrialisation

Industrialisation refers to the growth of industries in urban area in a large scale, beneficial as it provides the opportunity of employment and hence acts as magnetic attraction for most people from rural area and other small towns.

Urbanization is closely connected to the growth of industrialisation. By providing employment to the masses, a high percent of whom are illiterate and can only work in industries, it raises the economic standards.

In present times, with the spread of industrialisation, the process of urbanization has received unprecedented momentum all over the world and more specifically in the third world countries. It is predicted, on the basis of the current rates of Urbanization, that within a few decades the urban population of the third world countries will grow twice that of the present industrialised societies.

Other Advantages

Urbanization certainly has multiple benefits. Some of them are:

Improvement in Transportation

Urban centers not only have much more well-developed roads, but also faster and easier to use vehicles. Cars, bikes and buses leave the old fashioned bullock carts and tractors in the dust. The whole economy of the city is indirectly dependent upon the transportation in the city.

Transportation helps rural people to connect with urban areas and also foreign tourists get attracted to good cities/towns with better transport facilities. However, the sharp increase in the number of vehicles on the road overburdens the transport system hence leading to traffic jams and congestion.

The average speed of travelling by car in Bangalore is 4.5 km/hour, which implies that one would reach faster by just walking. Nevertheless, the advantages of the improvement in transport overpower the disadvantages.

Improved Means of Communication

Gone are the days when we wrote long letters and waited almost two weeks to receive a reply from our correspondent. In the industrialised and developed world of today, messages are sent and received within moments with the help of technology. The means of communication has played a vital role in the city’s economic development.

Higher Education Facilities

Urbanization encourages higher education for the rural people. It is an established fact that governments have set up all the higher educational centers in the big and small urban areas, which have acted as source of attraction to many people seeking the facilities for higher education.

Better Health Care

A major advantage of Urbanization is the the fertility rates. It reduces both mortality and fertility rates, because of the better medical and health care. Urbanization has increased the life expectation with its more hygienic form of living and with an advancement in the field of medicine.

To sum it up, urban areas ensure that all the services that people require such as home, workplace, shops etc. are all within close proximity. This reduces transport costs and boosts energy efficiency. It is also far more easy and economical to supply gas, water, electricity, fuel, sewage system to people who live in close proximity than people who live far apart.

Cities versus Villages

Cities bring together communication, creativity and competitiveness. It has always provided intellectual stimulus and educational leadership. In developing countries there is often a substantially higher proportion of educated people in the cities than in villages.

Urban environments also often encourage improvement in women’s status. Cities also offer more opportunities to break the vicious circle of poverty, by providing employment to the masses.

Urbanization also promotes cosmopolitanism, which is the ideology that all human beings belong to the same community. This will subdue conservative and orthodox mindsets that prevail in the society, which will in turn eliminate social evils such as discrimination, untouchability, and child marriages, amongst many others. Urbanization acts as a knowledge center, which will imbibe values such as equality, secularism, fraternity, etc. This will uphold the fundamental rights of the citizens of the country+.

The government has taken several steps such as ‘Make In India’, ‘ Digital India ’ and ‘ Startup India ’, to further deepen urbanization and to achieve its ambition, that is, to become the manufacturing hub of not only the Asian continent but also the world.

Increased employment opportunities, better lifestyle, easy and fast way to work, more knowledge of worldly affairs: these are the gifts of urbanization. It is most definitely a boon, a blessing in disguise.

Life Is Full Of Blessings Of Disguise

All the things that we experience happen for a reason.

We all have had experiences that created feelings of misery. We may not see that reason at the moment, but there is a hidden purpose in any given situation. We don’t really learn or grow if we don’t experience some sort of discomfort.

Oscar Wilde said; “What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise.”

With that in mind, we can recognize that each trial is a blessing in disguise.

I was a bitter person before and would always complain about every terrible thing that ever happened to me, complaining about my pain did not change the pain or make it go away, on the contrary this mindset only brought me more misery. The minute I made the decision to look at my painful experiences as lessons, all the weight that I had been carrying was lifted off my chest. I felt that I could finally breathe, I was able to see things with clarity and to look at my past and see the beauty in all that pain and suffering. Now, I have realized that my painful past was really a blessing in so many ways. It made me compassionate, it made me wiser and more resilient.

The next time you are confronted with something that has the illusion of being an obstacle, simply just realize that the greatest learning occurs when we are faced with an obstacle. If it were not for the resistance of obstacles, many people would not make an effort to become better and make improvements in their life.

Throughout our life we will have so many blessings in disguise.

A few years ago, I was living an unhealthy lifestyle, my health was deteriorating. After several trips to the hospital, I knew then I had to make a change. Sometimes an illness can give us a wake-up call to take better care of ourselves.

If you get fired from your job, this might seem like a big problem. However, there could be a better opportunity for you out there, a better job, a chance to start your own business, or this can give you time to finally pursue your passions.

If your partner cheated, it will hurt a lot at first, break-ups suck, but they are good learning experiences. Eventually you will realize that you are better off without this person and that you merely were shown you were investing your life and time into the wrong person. This can be the perfect time to stop and really think about what you want and expect out of a relationship, to really understand what it is you want and more importantly, what you deserve.

Sometimes it only takes one accident for a driver to never forget to check their blind-spot again. A harsh way to learn, but you will pay more attention while driving, some changes in behavior only happen with major shocks to the system.

The death of a loved one can be so painful, but it also teaches us to love and appreciate those who are still living and to be thankful for every day we get to spend above ground.

After suffering a burglary, you’ll never forget to lock the door and windows again.

When you are going through tough times, you will realize who your real friends are. Tough times have a way of uncovering the healthy, genuine relationships from the detrimental. You will learn to be close to those who are nursing your wounds and distance yourself from those who are silent and nowhere to be seen when you need them.

Depression, anxiety or mood disorders forces one to look in on their thoughts and actions in a way that most people don’t have to. People with mental illnesses have the power to help others that are also struggling with a mental health condition. Who better to talk to about something that is so hard than someone who knows exactly what you’re feeling?

There are so many more blessings in disguise and often it can be difficult to recognize a blessing when it comes because it appears as a problem and not a solution.

We need to sit back and look at everything with scrutiny. This will help us to take the best path to get us where we need to go. One of the many beautiful things about being brought down to the ground is the realization that there is only one direction to go, and that is up.

If we’re honest with ourselves, we can look back over our lives and realize that the most important lessons are learned from disappointments, heartbreaks, mistakes, and even tragedies.

Blessings in disguise often confronts us to make the changes we need in our lives.
