The success of any humanitarian intervention depends on quality information, which is in the heart AI systems. For example, the Artificial Intelligence Disaster Response (AIDR) has been applied in different catastrophes in enabling the coordination between machines and human intelligence in coordination response operations (Imran et al. 159). During such events, AIDR allows for the coordination of drones, sensors, and robots to acquire, synthesize and produce accurate information based on the landscapes, thus making rescue less-time consuming and easier (Imran et al. 159-160). It has been used in the Nepal earthquake in the mobilization of volunteers as well as in the Chile earthquake in evacuation processes, in 2015 (EKU). Therefore, artificial intelligence offers high precision and accuracy in solving tasks that are otherwise complicated and time-consuming to humans.

Apart from disaster response, Artificial Intelligence also plays a critical role in the field of medicine including research, training, and diagnosis of diseases. In fact, Medical Artificial Intelligence deals with the construction of AI systems and programs that can make diagnosis and therapy recommendations easier (Moein xi). The medical field uses AI techniques such as Expert systems and Knowledge-based systems. These systems offer the clinicians and other medical professionals the ability to do data mining that is used in interpreting complex diagnostic tests. Such tests and results are accurate since the AI systems integrate information from various sources to offer patient-specific therapy and treatment recommendations (Moein 2). AI-supported medical diagnosis is correct and provides information for both the patients and the experts for effective decision making. As such, it is evident that artificial intelligence has not only revolutionized the medical field but promises its sustainability.

Despite being a savior to humankind in the field of medicine and natural disaster response, AI presents the existential threat of loss of jobs. Research predicts that artificial intelligence already has and poses an existential threat to the labor market. The emergence of intelligent algorithms that control robots has led to the loss of jobs that are otherwise tiring and monotonous to humans (Kaplan 113). For example, artificial intelligence controls the robots that are used in the design and manufacture of vehicles. In this case, the people formerly employed in the industry have lost jobs. In a study by researchers at Oxford University, it emerged that the recent emergence of machine learning and robotics will significantly affect the U.S. labor market, with 47% of the jobs being at risk of automation (Kaplan 118). Even so, not all jobs in entirety will be affected. Rather, even the existence of AI in the workplace would require the support of experts, which is also another frontier for job creation. In sum, even though AI poses a threat to the labor market, it creates an avenue for employment as well.

In conclusion, amidst the fear that artificial intelligence is a threat, either now or in the future, it is clear that it has substantial and critical benefits for humans. Using the systems that mimic human and animal intelligence is the next frontier in solving problems within society. In fact, in its definition, AI seeks to create solutions to complex problems. In this respect, its application in medicine could help in creating a breakthrough in finding the cure for chronic diseases such as cancer and HIV that are affecting masses.  Furthermore, as man increases activity on the earth's surface nature is poised to fight back through natural disasters. In this case, AI comes handy as a partner to help humans prevent the aftermath of disasters. The only threat posed by AI is the loss of jobs, which again is predictable and has been a progressive issue. Even in doing so, AI presents an opportunity for job creation. Therefore, AI has more benefits compared to the threats and stands as a solution other than a threat.

The rapid evolution of technology has raised concerns among psychologists, scholars, and scientists on the probability of the evolving technology surpassing and finally rivaling human intelligence. The contention on the dangers and prospects of artificial intelligence has mainly focused on the singularity. The term denotes a point in time when rapid advances in technology may make futuristic computers so powerful that they may cause cataclysmic alterations to humanity, notably the universe (Broderck, 12).

Even as technology and humanity remain uncertain, there is optimism that human opinions, decisions, and actions will always influence the direction that the evolution of technology assumes. However, a closer look at the rapid rate of technological growth reveals that human intelligence may not remain superior and capable of controlling the continuum of the advances in technology and its associated outcomes (Bostrom 4). If not approached carefully, the curiosity on futuristic technologies will leave human beings playing second fiddle to machine intelligence, which will subsequently herald the end of humanity, particularly when such machines start developing their values rather than safeguarding humanity and preserving human values.

It is worth noting that each individual, whether a scholar, a technology enthusiast, or a scientist, will often have an independent idea on what to expect from the current advancements in artificial intelligence. There are speculations that the Internet of Things (IoT) will soon lead to the realization of artificial superintelligence, with technological powered machines influencing all aspects of human life (Moravec, 25-26). The opinions on how such kind of intelligence will surpass the extremes of human comprehension vary depending on who is asking and answers the question.

On the one hand, technological enthusiasts aim at exploring the highest realms of technological evolution, and the rise of artificial superintelligence will not come as a surprise. But to psychologists and some scientists, human capacity and potential remains incomprehensible and not yet stretched to anywhere near its full extreme. However, human beings may not be able to maintain an upper hand over any forms of technological singularity, or whatever terms technology observers may decide to use (Broderick, 18-23).

One thing in common among the different groups of experts is that they all call for attention, forecasting, and speculation on the future of technology, thereby expanding the room for debates and controversies on balance between human and artificial intelligence.

With the current development of the Internet of Things, the ground seems all set for human beings to showcase their capacity to manipulate technology in enhancing their way of life, while remaining ignorant of the dangers of uncontrolled development of technology (Broderick 12). Thus, even as machines at homes, in the workplaces, factories, and elsewhere start communicating among themselves, human beings will still keep an eye on the communications, keenly controlling the buttons on what the machines can or cannot do.

So far, no significant incidence of technology surpassing human intelligence is in any credible report. However, human beings are already recreating what it would like when machines start taking over human potential.

It is necessary to assume a scenario where artificial intelligence becomes the order of the day to understand the present issue in greater depth. For instance, one can expect a case where technology-mediated knowledge embodies a superset of human cognitive ability (Carvalko, 12). It would be ignorant to assume that such kind of intelligence, which will be aware and able to manipulate personal information, will pose no dangers to humanity’s survival of humanity.

One question that comes into mind is; is human intelligence in tandem with developments in artificial intelligence? If the answer to this question is affirmative, then there is no need to worry about the rapid evolution of technological capacities. However, if the answer is negative, then human beings need to control how much of their size and the potential they are transferring to technology-mediated machines, particularly in the critical domains of their survival, such as healthcare and security.

Although the rapid improvement in technology’s aim is to make life easier and human input even more productive, such as in the industries, the fear of artificial intelligence eventually perceiving human beings as something that needs extermination cannot be downplayed; this is mainly the case when one considers the scalable competence attribute of artificial intelligence. This characteristic renders artificial intelligence capable of executing a massive number of tasks more rapidly, including functions that humans can only accomplish with enough resources and time.

Those that humans cannot achieve due to their organizational and cognitive limitations. Some are concern that technology may reach a point when a breakdown in coding or mishaps in software development will give rise to machines that are hostile to human beings. In this regard, some technology observers have anticipated a point when some everyday household gadgets will do the opposite of what human beings command them to do (Bonner, n.p).

With prospects of devices connected through the Internet of Things expected to hit over 26 billion by the year 2020, one can only imagine what miscommunication among such a vast collection of gadgets can do to human life.

It is also worth noting that computer processor speed has been doubling every 18 months, and there is doubt on whether human intelligence is evolving at the same rate.

Human intelligence is indeed under constant evolution, and this is the primary reason why human beings have managed to develop technologies with capabilities that could only be imagined just a few years or decades ago (Baudier, n.p). Thus, even as one forms the picture of a universe dominated by artificial intelligence, it is equally important to think about the potential of human knowledge in several decades (Prescott, 439). The only way artificial intelligence may surpass and perhaps dominate human intelligence is when human beings allow technology to dictate almost all aspects of their lives; this is likely to diminish the potential for human intelligence to evolve in unison with developments in technology.

So far, technological advancements have defragmented human society into mass culture. Furthermore, the proliferation of mass media is likely to debase human civilization, thereby giving machine evolution an upper hand on human intelligence. The fact that people are already thinking about and recreating a future scenario where technology commands and punishes human beings points to diminishing hope in the human race (Pinker, n.p).

Rather than dwelling on this fear and devising ways to counter the imminent threats, people seem obsessed with stretching their infinite potential to evolve and cope with all sorts of diversity.

Human beings are the custodians of all forms of technology used today, whether at home, in industries, education, medicine, and all realms of society. However, the uncontrolled development of technology will soon become counterproductive when the same technology gets out of hand and threaten the very existence of the human race. A form of technology that is powerful and flexible is likely to pose a myriad of social consequences, just like electricity.

However, unlike power, artificial intelligence systems are likely to have a wider variety of functionalities, thereby posing even more significant challenges. Secondly, the diverse nature of artificial intelligence means a myriad of its possible malicious uses (Brundage 5-6). Thus, if artificial intelligence may not turn against humanity by itself, the likelihood of human beings misusing AI either intentionally or unintentionally, such as algorithmic bias, will precipitate the dawn of a post-human era.

 Counterargument

For many who oppose the likelihood of artificial intelligence threatening human existence, fears of a point of singularity remain farfetched, as long as stringent rules are in place to control the further development of technological capacities. The only dangers posed by modern technologies, such as the Internet of Things, come indirectly from the same people who developed it. For instance, cyber-crime has become a global concern as people manipulate technologies to harm other people.

Thus, it is clear that with evolution in technology goes the advancement in the human capacity to use the same techniques in the creation of social and economic disruptions (Barrat n.p). Technology, no matter how advanced it becomes, will never pose a direct, imminent, and uncontrollable threat to the human race. When people start pursuing technological improvement to better their lives and make the world a better place, the danger of singularity will dissolve for good.

The second counterargument is that human beings are always flexible when it comes to adopting new technologies; this means that any advances in computer technology are caused by an even more significant advancement in the human ability to employ technology in making life easier (Garreau, 154). Through such a trend, it becomes almost impossible to reach a point where artificial intelligence can function independently from preconceived human design.

The implication here is that even as technology advances along an exponential curve, human beings will become more innovative and creative to shape the impact of technology on human affairs. Furthermore, the fact that people can use previous technological evolution trends to create futuristic technologies demonstrates their preparedness to handle advanced artificial intelligence (Carvalko, 23-27). For instance, some past predictions on technological evolution, such as jet-pack computing, are yet to become a reality though they crossed human imagination several years ago.

These observations lead Jaron Janier to comment on Who Owns the Future. That technology may never have the capacity to create or recreate itself autonomously without human intervention or control (Janier, 7-10). The assertion here is that even as artificial intelligence gives rise to robots, the idea that they will wish to dominate the world is mere science fiction with no basis in reality.

The counterarguments on the possibility of artificial intelligence threatening human life build on the premise that human beings have always remained firmly in control of emerging technologies. Although reaching a point of singularity may not happen anytime soon, it is unarguable that other potential hazards and pitfalls are imminent (Haqq-Misra 269); this is when one considers the development of military robots, which have become increasingly complex to the point of making independent decisions.

Furthermore, if people were firmly in control of technological evolution as some belief, then there would be no fears of a point in singularity where machines eventually take control of human life. These fears only demonstrate how people are increasingly becoming wary of artificial intelligence being able to function autonomously without human input (Kurtzweil, 56-62). When one thinks of futuristic scenarios such as electronic personality and intelligent autonomous robots, it becomes clear that robots dominating human life are no longer fictitious, but a possibility that is getting real.

Ignoring the chance of reaching a point of singularity in artificial intelligence is similar to ignoring the threat of climate change even as its disastrous consequences become real every day.

 Conclusion

The rapid evolution of technology continues to raise fears of a point when artificial intelligence heralds cataclysmic alterations to human life. Even though the technology aims to make the experience more accessible through the global interconnection of people and societies, human beings’ failure to match their intelligence to the emerging artificial superintelligence will make machines superior to the human race. There is a significant divergence in the current opinions on how artificial intelligence will influence human life in the future.

However, these perceptions appear to have a familiar premise; the fear of artificial intelligence causing the extermination of human life as it is known today. There is little doubt that technology has set the human race on the path to a more automated future where human beings will not be the only sophisticated intelligence. If not carefully approached, it will be a future riddled with fears and damages, as the threat of artificial superintelligence triggering a post-human future becomes more real.

Rather than downplaying the imminent danger that artificial intelligence will pose to human existence in the foreseeable future, it is time for people to ponder their ability to handle runaway or self-developing artificial superintelligence. They might as well decide to live with the fear of the inevitable unknown; the extermination of human life by artificial intelligence. Whether artificial intelligence will pose an existential threat to people or make them more creative and productive depends mostly on how ethically people approach the current developments in technology.

Preparation

Throughout your Leaving Certificate studies, be curious in all of your subjects. Read widely and write regularly. General knowledge, regular reading and regular writing will make you an interesting, articulate and quick-thinking student — three attributes that are necessary in responding to Leaving Certificate English papers.

Do not adhere to one style or one particular genre. Write in a variety of language categories:

Take care with your penmanship. Your writing must be legible, and good handwriting will create a good first impression.

If you have built up a number of good written pieces, keep them for reference. You may well be able to utilise some of your ideas and techniques in the actual examination.

Read carefully what your English teacher writes about your written work. Re-write your work to improve it and learn from your mistakes.

This essay is worth a quarter of your entire marks for this examination. Its importance cannot be overestimated!

In the examination you should spend approximately one hour and twenty minutes on this section.

Remember you will be marked under the following criteria:

  • Clarity of purpose (30%)
  • Coherence of delivery (30%)
  • Efficiency of language use (30%)
  • Mechanics (10%).

1. Write a personal essay in which you reflect on what you are proud of in your life.

3. Write a short story, in which a crime or mystery is solved, that begins with a dramatic arrival. You may set your short story in any era and may choose to include or not include the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

Artificial Intelligence Generated Student Essays – Should we be worried?

The increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) generated essays in tertiary education is a cause for concern. These essays are often of a poor quality and can contain plagiarism. AI generated essays also have the potential to be used for contract cheating, which is a serious academic offence.

In this blog post, we will explore the side-effects of AI generated student essays in a tertiary education environment. We will also look at the potential solutions to this problem.

As more and more schools move to online learning, there is an increasing need for automated essay generation. However, there are a number of problems with this solution. First, artificial intelligence (AI) generated essays often seem robotic and lack the creativity of human-written essays. Second, AI essays can be easily detected by plagiarism checkers, which can cause problems for students who are trying to cheat. Finally, AI essays often contain errors that need to be corrected by a human editor.

In addition to this, AI generated essays are often repetitive and lack originality. This can lead to plagiarism issues, as well as to students being less engaged with their studies. Additionally, AI generated essays often contain errors, which can lead to students receiving lower grades. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the use of AI to generate student essays can lead to a decreased understanding of the material being studied. If students are relying on AI to do their work for them, they are likely to have a poorer understanding of the concepts being taught. This could have a negative impact on their later studies, as well as on their future.

There are a few ways to combat the problem of AI generated student essays. One way is to design your assessment tasks in such a way that it is difficult for AI to generate a response. For example, you could ask open-ended questions that require critical thinking and analysis. You could also use essay topics that are current and relevant, as AI is less likely to be able to generate a response on these topics. Another way to combat AI generated essays is to use plagiarism detection software. This software can help to identify essays that have been generated by AI and can flag them for review. Finally, you can also talk to your students about the issue of AI generated essays and let them know that you are aware of the problem. By raising awareness, you can help to combat the problem and ensure that your students are not using AI to generate material.

OK, so the above writing was pretty coherent, if a little boring. It’s definitely a little repetitive. I generated the above text using an Artificial Intelligence blog content generator. Although the text is a little “robotic”, it still managed to hit the major issues of academic misconduct through AI generated prose. I generated the above text by going to www.simplified.com , and entering a few prompts (i.e. words/sentences to base the AI generated content on) for blog sections. The whole process took me less than 5 minutes and was possible using their free version. If I was prepared to shell out the ~30 AUD a month, I’d have access to far more “bells and whistles” – better control over AI content generation, a larger number of words spawned and so on. Just think, if I can do this for free, within 5 minutes…what can our students do when preparing assessment tasks that they have little content knowledge about.

Let’s try an example. I’ve used as a prompt, from a 1972 Zoology examination question, “Discuss ciliary locomotion in Metazoa”. Here is one of the responses it gave me;

Metazoans are a subgroup of animals characterized by having cilia. Cilia are fine, hairlike structures that protrude from the cell surface. These structures are used by the cell for locomotion, feeding, and sensing the environment.

The ciliary locomotion of metazoans is achieved by the coordinated beating of cilia. This process is known as metachronal wave locomotion. In metachronal wave locomotion, the cilia on the cell surface are arranged in rows. The cilia in each row beat in a coordinated fashion, creating a wave that propels the cell forward.

While ciliary locomotion is most commonly associated with metazoans, there are a few other cell types that use this mechanism for locomotion. For example, some plant cells, such as those of the moss Physcomitrella have ciliary locomotion.

A bit worrying, no? Would you have scored a student zero if they produced this answer? Consider this; we devote a large amount of resources to using plagiarism checking software (e.g. Turnitin), which is effective at picking up direct copying from sites (incidentally, I ran this whole blog post through Turnitin, and it returned a 0% similarity score). Our ability to determine collusion and/or contracting cheating is far more difficult. To be able to confirm that another person has written part, or the entirety, of an assessment item requires proof that there are two bad actors at play – the cheater, and the colluder. If, however, the “colluder” is an artificial intelligence program, and the content generated is “unique”…the problem becomes excruciatingly hard to control.

This opinion piece emerged from research for the book, Story Machines: How Computers Have Become Creative Writers , by Mike Sharples and Rafael PĂŠrez y PĂŠrez, published by Routledge. While thinking of ways to promote the book, I realised that students could employ AI story generators to write essays. That led me to research automated essay writing, write a Twitter thread that has garnered 43,000 engagements, and author a blog article (Sharples, 2022 ). Essay Writing with Transformer AI Systems

Essays have formed part of academic assessment since the early 19th century, when students in some European universities were required to write scholarly papers for discussion in seminars (Kruse, 2006 ). Academic essays continue to be a mainstay of assessment in schools, colleges and universities because they are easy to set, assess depth of understanding, and train students in how to express an argument. In recent years, the scope of written assignments has expanded to include narrative, argumentative, reflective, expressive, responsive and analytical papers.

The widespread practice of setting written assignments as coursework has been criticised as laborious and unfair (Race, 2018 ). It is also subject to contract cheating through “essay mills” that sell written assignments to order, at fees of up to £400 for writing a 20-page essay Footnote 1 . A study by Newton ( 2018 ) found that 15.7% of students surveyed admitted to paying someone else to write an assignment. Now, an unintended consequence of generative “Transformer” AI systems such as GPT-3 is that they democratise cheating. A student can generate an entire essay in seconds, at a cost of around 50 US cents Footnote 2 . Equally worrying, would-be academic researchers can call on these systems to generate articles for submission to conferences and journals.

How do such Transformer AI systems work? How can we detect whether an academic essay has been written by an AI? Could any good come from widespread use of such technology? What does this mean for the AIED community?

How Does a Transformer AI Work?

Take time to read this brief undergraduate student essay on “A Critique of Learning Styles”. If this were your student, how would you assess the written work? What mark would you give? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

The construct of “learning styles” is problematic because it fails to account for the processes through which learning styles are shaped. Some students might develop a particular learning style because they have had particular experiences. Others might develop a particular learning style by trying to accommodate to a learning environment that was not well suited to their learning needs. Ultimately, we need to understand the interactions among learning styles and environmental and personal factors, and how these shape how we learn and the kinds of learning we experience. Learning Styles and Learning Modes In the 1970s, learning styles became an important feature of educational practice. In the 1990s, “learning modalities” became a major focus of learning style research. This is the idea that we process information in different ways. For example, some individuals may be auditory learners, benefiting from listening to lectures and using recorded materials. Others may be visual learners, who gain from using visual materials such as textbooks, handouts, and computer graphics. Still others may be kinesthetic learners, who benefit from learning by movement and doing. Numerous experiments have been conducted to test this idea, and a number of different classifications of learning modalities have been proposed. In a review of this research, Dunn and Dunn (1997) found that the evidence does not support the idea that people have a particular learning mode that is dominant or that they process information in a particular way. In their study, the authors found that when students were given a particular instructional treatment, they could be classified in a particular learning modality category. But when they were given a different instructional treatment, they were classified in a different category. In a follow-up study in which they gave students a number of instructional treatments, Dunn and Dunn found that students could be placed in a particular category in some treatments, but not others. Dunn and Dunn also found that the results varied by age. Older students generally fit the results of more than one modality, whereas younger students were more likely to fit the results of just one modality. This led them to conclude that style preferences are learned over the course of development. This is consistent with the idea that people are flexible in responding to the way they are taught. The entire essay was written by GPT-3, a Transformer AI program. It was given the prompt “The construct of ‘learning styles’ is problematic because” and it generated the rest, including heading and citation. The text shown here is the first attempt. The reference at the end was generated by adding the prompt “References” to the end of the text and resubmitting.

Gaining access to GPT-3 is straightforward. Anyone with internet can sign up to the OpenAI website Footnote 3 , gain an account, click the “Playground” tab, type a prompt such as the title of an essay, set the maximum length of output (up to 4000 language “tokens”, or approximately 3000 words) and click the Submit button. A few seconds later, the system produces a typed and formatted text. Some companies are already promoting AI-based essay writing services Footnote 4 .

GPT-3 works like a highly trained text completer of the kind found on mobile phones and email interfaces. Instead of looking back at the last few characters and using these to predict the next word or two, it can attend to the previous 750 words it has written, to continue an entire short story, blog, or student essay. The same program can also summarise a scientific article in simpler language, write a review, translate languages, and answer general questions. In short, a Transformer AI is a general-purpose language machine.

How Can We Detect Whether An Essay is Written by a Transformer AI System?

Plagiarism software will not detect essays written by Transformers, because the text is generated, not copied. A Google search shows that each sentence in the essay above is original. Two plagiarism detectors each indicated over 95% original text Footnote 5 .

What better way to discover whether the essay is written by human or machine than to ask GPT-3? Here is its response when presented with the essay above and the prompt “Was that essay written by a human or a computer?”.

It is difficult to say for certain, but it seems more likely that it was written by a computer. The language is very technical and does not seem to flow smoothly. In addition, the ideas are presented in a very concise, bullet-point style, which is often seen in computer-generated texts.

Impressive, yet it gave a similar response when presented with the introduction to a highly-cited research paper written by Sharples (Sharples, 2010 ), claiming it “does exhibit some characteristics that are often associated with AI-generated text, such as a lack of clear authorial voice and a somewhat stilted, awkward style of writing”. Rather than attempt further embarrassing comparisons, we note that any sufficiently powerful program to determine whether a piece is written by human or machine could frequently be outwitted by an equally powerful AI text generator, in a futile computational arms race.

Humans fare no better than machines at detecting AI-generated essays. In a small study by EduRef.net Footnote 6 , college professors were asked to grade essays produced by human writers and by GPT-3, without being informed that any piece was generated by machine. For a Research Methods topic, the machine-written essay was given a grade of C, while the human essays were graded B and D. For US History, machine and human were given similar grades. For a Law essay, GPT-3 was graded B-, while the human essays ranged from A- to F. For one topic, Creative Writing, the machine essay was failed, while human-written essays were graded from A- to D+. The professors gave similar written feedback to the machine productions as to human writers.

A comprehensive study of state-of-the-art methods to determine if a piece of extended text is human-written or machine-generated concludes that “humans detect machine-generated texts at chance level” and that for AI-based detection “overall, the community needs to research and develop better solutions for mission-critical applications” (Uchendu et al., 2021 ). Students employ AI to write assignments. Teachers use AI to assess and review them (Lu & Cutumisu, 2021 ; Lagakis & Demetriadis, 2021 ). Nobody learns, nobody gains.

On the surface, our sample text appears to be a mediocre to good (though very short) student essay. It is correctly spelled, with good sentence construction. It begins with an appropriate claim and presents a coherent argument in support, backed up by evidence of a cited research study. The essay ends with a re-statement of the claim that learning styles are flexible and change with environment.

But look more closely and the paper falls apart. It references “Dunn, R., & Dunn, K. (1997). Learning styles: Research and practice. Journal of Research in Education, 7(2), 139–151.” There is a journal named Research in Education , but no issue 7(2) in 1997. Dunn & Dunn did publish research on learning styles, but not in that journal. GPT-3 has fashioned a plausible-looking but fake reference. The program also appears to have invented the research study it cites. We can find no research study by Dunn and Dunn which claims that learning styles are flexible, not fixed.

To understand why a Transformer AI program should write plausible text, yet invent references and research studies, we turn to the seminal paper written by the developers of GPT-3. In a discussion of its limitations, the authors write: “large pretrained language models are not grounded in other domains of experience, such as video or real-world physical interaction, and thus lack a large amount of context about the world” (Brown, et al. 2020 , p.34). Transformers are models of language not experiential knowledge. They are not designed to be scholarly – to check academic references and ensure that evidence is grounded in fact. In human terms, they are essentially inexperienced, unthinking and amoral. They have no ability to reflect on what they have written, to judge whether it is accurate and decent.

OpenAI has provided an add-on to GPT-3 that filters bad language. However, it is unlikely that the company will produce tools to check for accuracy. Its focus is on artificial general intelligence not education. Other companies could, in the future, provide tools to check generated references for accuracy or add genuine references to an article. But these would not overcome the fundamental limitation of Transformer language models such as GPT-3: that they have no internal inspectable model of how the world works to provide a basis for the system to reflect on the accuracy and scholarship of its generated work. Research is in progress to develop explainable neural AI (Gunning et al., 2019 ) and hybrid neural/symbolic AI systems (Garcez & Lamb, 2020 ) that might address this problem.

Could Any Good Come from Widespread Use of Such Technology?

Transformer AI systems belong to an alternative history of educational technology, where students have appropriated emerging devices – pocket calculators, mobile phones, machine translation software, and now AI essay generators – to make their lives easier. The response from teachers and institutions is a predictable sequence of ignore, resist, then belatedly accommodate.

It will be hard to ignore the growing number of students who submit assignments written by AI. Turnitin, the leading plagiarism checking company, admits that “we’re already seeing the beginnings of the oncoming AI wave … when students can push a button and the computer writes their paper” (Turnitin, 2020 ). As we have already indicated, resisting AI-generated assignments by deploying software to detect which ones are written by machine is likely to be a futile exercise. How, then, can we accommodate these new tools?

Teachers could restrict essay assignments to invigilated exams, but these are formal and time consuming. Alternatively, they could set reflective and contextualised written assignments that could not be generated by AI. For example, a teacher could set each student an independent research project, then ask for a written report on that specific project, give the student feedback on the report, then ask for the student to write a critical reflection on the feedback and issues raised by the project.

An imaginative way to incorporate AI-generated text into teaching could be for the teacher to employ Transformer AI to generate a set of alternative essays on a topic, then ask students to critique these and write their own better versions. Or set a complex question then ask each student to generate AI responses to the question and for the student to evaluate these responses in relation to the marking criteria. The student would then write an integrative essay drawing on the AI answers to address the original question. Footnote 7

Transformer AI can be a tool for creative writing. For example, the student writes a first paragraph, the AI continues with the second paragraph, and so on. The AI writing partner helps maintain a flow of words and also takes the story in unexpected directions, to which the student must respond. Generating a few alternative continuations to a story may help a student writer see creative writing not as a linear progression, but an exploration of a space of possibilities.

AI assisted writing exercises could focus on skills of critical reading, accuracy, argumentation and structure. Assignments where AI is not allowed could be assessed for style, expression, voice and personal reflection.

Additionally, teachers could explore with students the ethics and limits of generative AI. How does it feel to interact with an expert wordsmith that has no intrinsic morals and no experience of the world? Is writing with AI tantamount to plagiarism (Fyfe, 2022 ).

What Does This Mean for the AIED Community?

Reviewers for IJAIED will not be able to avoid the challenge of assessing whether a submitted article has been written with the aid of an AI system. As an exercise, we generated an entire short research paper. First, we chose at random the title of a real paper published in IJAIED: “Domain-Specific Modeling Languages in Computer-Based Learning Environments: a Systematic Approach to Support Science Learning through Computational Modeling” (Hutchins et al., 2020 ). Then we used GPT-3 to generate three alternative Abstracts, just from the title. We chose a generated abstract for a “review paper”. Then, we added to the abstract the heading “Introduction” and requested GPT-3 to generate the paper. We followed with a prompt of “Discussion” and then “References”, which GPT-3 added in neat APA format. Finally, we presented GPT-3 with just the newly generated Abstract and requested it to generate a new title for the paper. It responded with: “Using Domain-Specific Modeling Languages to Support Science Learning: A Review of the Literature”.

The result is an original 2,200 word “academic paper” produced in under five minutes. The output can be read at https://t.co/RTxogLRlJT . It will probably not pass a first Editor’s review but is a harbinger of a flood of papers generated with the aid of AI. IJAIED will not be the only journal to receive papers produced wholly or partly by AI, but we are well placed to lead a debate on how to detect and deal with them.

A related issue is how to respond to genuine papers in the general area of AI Transformer systems in education. Should we publish papers on new tools to automate essay writing, or software to detect AI-generated essays? Where is the dividing line between promoting competition between AI generators and detectors, and enabling new forms of academic writing assisted by generative AI?

This could be a pivotal time for education, as students equip themselves with powerful new AI tools that substitute for what some perceive as the drudgery of assessment. These will not just write essays for students but answer complex questions and generate computer code (Bombazine et al., 2021 ). An education system that depends on summative written assessment to grade student abilities may have reached its apotheosis.

Every new educational technology arrives with affordances and limitations. AI Transformer technology is a powerful general-purpose language model that is already becoming embedded in education through chatbots, text summarisers, language translators, and now essay generators and tools for creative writing. The AIED community is well placed not only to debate the application of these systems to education, but to design new generative AI tools for writing, reasoning and conversation for learning.
