Ph.D. in Human Resource Management

Program information.

The doctoral program in human resource management (HRM) prepares students for success in research universities as faculty members specializing in human resources. Doctoral students work closely with faculty to gain research and teaching expertise in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HRM, including the relationship between these practices and organizational strategies, cultures, and performance.

Many HRM scholars specialize or focus on more micro-level work, such as researching the impact of specific HR practices (e.g., selection or training techniques) on individual-level measures of satisfaction or performance. Alternatively, macro-level HR (i.e., “strategic HRM”) scholars study the effects of systems of HR policies and practices on organizational-level outcomes. KU faculty have expertise at both levels, as evidenced by publications in prestigious outlets.

Doctoral students work closely with faculty to gain research expertise in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HRM with a focus on the attraction, selection, retention, development, motivation, and utilization of individuals in organizations.

Part of our mission is to develop effective teachers. To that end, all doctoral students are required to teach at least two sections as independent instructors. The school and university prepare and reward doctoral students for excellence in teaching through various programs and awards.

A graduate course in economics: BE 701: Business Economics OR BE 917: Advanced Managerial Economics OR ECON 700: Survey of Microeconomics

Note: BE 917: Business Economics, is preferred. Students coming into the program directly from an undergraduate degree may consider substituting BE 701: Business Economics, or ECON 700: Survey of Microeconomics. In the event a student has taken a graduate economics course prior to enrolling as a KU doctoral student, she/he may waive the requirement and substitute either an elective doctoral content course or a statistics/research methods course for this requirement.

Students can be admitted while they are finishing their master's degree. However, they must complete their master's degree before they can start the PhD program which starts in the Fall. Submission of a writing sample or a writing sample under timed conditions may also be scheduled. Applicants must also participate in an interview with program faculty on the admissions committee.

In lieu of GRE or GMAT scores, the program will accept a peer-reviewed conference paper or journal article on an empirical study employing quantitative methods or evidence that the prospect has received a B or A in a quantitative methods course in the last five years or completed a relevant certification.

Sasha Stefanovic, Online MSHRM ’22 , is already known to Boilermaker faithful as a former standout on the Purdue men’s basketball team. He also made a name for himself in the classroom, earning both a bachelor’s degree in finance and his master’s in HR from the Daniels School of Business. His strong work ethic never wavered.

“My parents emigrated from Serbia and Macedonia and worked in steel mills, so that blue-collar ethic was instilled in me early in life,” Stefanovic says. “I think Purdue reflects the same values and characteristics. We’ve had a lot of group projects as part of my master’s program, and everyone is hardworking and focused on doing their best.”

Nearly two dozen graduate programs at USF considered among the best in America

The University of South Florida is home to nearly two dozen graduate programs considered among the best in America, according to new rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report. USF features 23 graduate programs ranked inside the top 100 among all public and private institutions, including 11 ranked in the top 50.

USF’s highest-ranked programs are industrial and organizational psychology at No. 3, criminology at No. 18 and audiology, which comes in at No. 22. 

Among USF Health’s ranked programs, nursing anesthesia jumped 58 spots into the top 50, the physical therapy program rose by double digits to No. 33 and the nursing master’s program now sits in the top 25 at No. 24. 

In addition, USF’s social work and part-time MBA programs both saw double-digit gains and the education program broke into the top 50.  

“We are thrilled that many University of South Florida graduate programs are included among the nation’s best in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings,” USF President Rhea Law said. “This recognition underscores the commitment of our faculty and staff, who continue to provide high-quality programs that empower our students to enhance their skills, expand their knowledge and progress in their careers by earning an advanced degree.”

As U.S. News does not release new rankings for every program, every year, rankings denoted with an asterisk have been republished this year. U.S News also announced that medical, engineering and clinical psychology school rankings will be released at a later date. 

According to U.S. News, rankings are generated through “ranking indicators” derived from reputation and/or data reported by each institution.  For some programs, U.S. News evaluates key areas such as expert opinions in the field, opportunities for student engagement, resources for student support and career success, as well as faculty and student performance, in terms of existing credentials, research impact and metrics such as student job placement.

In addition to the graduate program rankings, in September 2023 U.S. News ranked USF as one of the nation’s top 50 public universities for the fifth consecutive year , and the university earned its highest ranking ever among all universities public or private.
