We are one of the world’s preeminent Schools of Operations Research and Information Engineering—highly respected for the research and academic investigation conducted here and the role our work plays in influencing and seeding ideas in the academic community to reach new understanding. A leader in advancing and influencing the decision and management sciences, the School provides an unparalleled educational and research environment. The School’s core strength is our faculty, distinguished teachers and researchers, who build breadth and depth in fundamental science and methodological research.

One of the most remarkable aspects about Cornell is the extent of inter-departmental relations. The ties between our School and the departments of computer science and mathematics are particularly strong, as are our links with the Centers for Statistics and Applied Mathematics and with the Johnson School of Management. Our students often take courses offered by other units, in engineering and across the university. In particular, our Ph.D. students benefit from the strengths in the Operations Management and Finance groups in the Johnson School, in the practice and theory of computational mathematics, and in the study of probability and statistics throughout Cornell.

Furthermore, one of the unique aspects of Cornell is the “field system”. The faculty in the “Field of Operations Research” represent a broad range of areas, and have faculty appointments within departments spanning several colleges within Cornell. As such, our students are able to engage in a wide variety of projects, spanning from purely theoretical research such as mathematical probability, to practical applications of machine learning techniques on data sets provided by companies that consult with Cornell.

FAQ: Questions about our MS and PhD Programs

You have a lot to consider as you research and compare graduate hospitality programs . In this section, we answer a few of the most common questions from MS and PhD applicants, including test score requirements, what a hotel PhD entails, and available support resources.

What tests are required to apply for the MS and PhD degree programs?

Applicants for the MS and PhD programs in hotel administration are required to submit a GMAT or GRE score. GMAT and GRE scores are valid for up to five years.

Students must meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement and may be required to take the TOEFL or the IELTS exam. In some cases, these testing requirements can be waived. For more information on minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores, how to submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores, and the criteria for waiving the requirement, visit the Graduate School’s website .

What is the deadline to apply for the MS or PhD degree program?

MS and PhD students are admitted only for the fall semester. Applications will open on September 1 and should be completed by December 15 for the subsequent fall term. We will contact competitive applicants via email to schedule an admissions interview.

What kind of financial aid is available for MS or PhD students?

MS students can find financial aid opportunities by contacting the Fellowships and Financial Aid Office through Cornell’s Graduate School. Fellowships covering the cost of tuition and a taxable stipend may be awarded to PhD students on a case-by-case basis.

What resources do you offer for international students?

Cornell University’s International Services Office of Global Learning can assist international students with various services from immigration issues to campus life.

Where can I find information about current MS or PhD research?

Since the MS and PhD degrees are research-based, the Center for Hospitality Research is the best resource to learn more about the research interests of our graduate faculty. Email [email protected] for more information.

How many MS and PhD students are admitted each year?

Admission is extremely selective and is based on both the strength of the applicant and the availability of faculty to advise new graduate students. Typically, up to three MS and PhD students are admitted in a particular year.

What makes a PhD applicant competitive?

A competitive PhD applicant typically has an exceptional academic record, including research experience, a competitive GRE or GMAT (score above 700 for GMAT), relevant hospitality and teaching experience, and a well-articulated statement of purpose.

I get the opportunity to interact with sociologists and political scientists and economists outside of my field who really give me an understanding and a scope well beyond what I would have gotten if I had gone to a school that didn’t have this interdisciplinary nature. The Brooks School is a perfect place for me. I can craft my research in a way that is valuable in the long term. – Shyam Raman, PhD Student

Same Cornell PhD program. Different location.

PhD students at Cornell Tech in New York City pursue the same degree programs as their peers in Ithaca. They belong to the same PhD programs, are members of the same graduate fields, follow the same application process, and have the same course and research requirements. They graduate with PhD degrees from Cornell University. The location of a student is determined by the location of their advisor; a Cornell PhD student whose advisor is located at Cornell Tech is located in New York City and, in addition to their degree affiliation, is considered a PhD student at Cornell Tech.

Why, then, do some PhD students pursue their degrees in NYC?

The PhD students in NYC are those who do their research with Cornell Tech faculty advisors. Cornell Tech faculty belong to the same departments and fields as their Ithaca counterparts, and their research similarly spans a rich range of topics from theory to applications. Students can spend time on both campuses, joining Ithaca-based classes, faculty, and graduate colleagues through a combination of remote and in-person means.

For PhD students, how does New York City compare with Ithaca?

New York City has long been a global economic and cultural hub; it is now a leading city for tech innovation. Just like other top universities located in tech hubs, such as Silicon Valley, the students at Cornell Tech are in a unique position to engage with the community and explore opportunities for impact outside academia. However, such engagement solely depends on the student’s interest, and is not part of the degree program or requirements, which are identical across campuses. The application requirements remain the same whether the student intends to finalize their research in Ithaca or NYC.

While other fields and departments are represented, the Cornell Tech campus mainly supports PhD students in five Cornell University PhD programs :

  • Computer Science
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Information Science
  • Operations Research
  • Operations, Technology, and Information Management

Ready to apply?

PhD students at Cornell Tech are part of the Cornell PhD program, and are admitted through Cornell’s PhD admissions process . A PhD student is affiliated with Cornell Tech when their thesis advisor is a Cornell Tech faculty member.

Why should you consider Cornell?

Degree Requirements

The Weill Cornell Graduate School awards master's and PhD degrees in the listed programs below.  Each program is unique, featuring a mix of coursework, teaching, and research experiences designed to prepare the next generation of leaders across fields.

PhD Degree Requirements

The Weill Cornell Graduate School awards Cornell University PhD degrees to students in seven programs of study. Much of the academic structure by which a student progresses through WCGS is set by his/her program of study. Details of program requirements and procedures may be found directly within each program description.  WCGS expects students to complete their PhD degree requirements within six years.

Requirement Overview

In all programs, students take courses in the first year of graduate school. After year one, coursework is required or elective, depending on the program. Also in year one, students begin research rotations in faculty members' laboratories. The rotations help the student define his/her thesis research and determine faculty he/she wants to work with in pursuing the PhD.

By the end of the second year, the student takes the Admission for Candidacy Exam (ACE)—a combined written and oral exam with content and format determined by the program of study, and administered by a faculty committee. Upon the successful completion of the ACE, a student is considered a PhD candidate.

The progress of the PhD candidate is closely guided by a major sponsor (thesis advisor) and a Special Committee. Each program has its own process for selection of the sponsor and the committee, with a focus on developing the student as an independent scholar and scientist.

The student selects a sponsor from among Graduate School faculty and typically conducts all or nearly all of his/her thesis research in the major sponsor's laboratory. The Special Committee, including the major sponsor, meets at least annually with the student to evaluate the student's progress toward the degree.

In year three and thereafter, the WCGS PhD candidate conducts laboratory work focused on his/her approved thesis project.

Typically in the sixth year, the student completes the final examination (the thesis "defense") and has met all requirements for the PhD. The committee approves the student's thesis, the student's defense of the thesis (in the final exam), and ultimately certifies that the student has met all requirements for the degree.

Details of program requirements and procedures may be found directly within each program description,  here .
