The PhD Psychology is a 36-month full-time research degree conducted under the supervision of a faculty member culminating with submission of a research thesis.
Our research can help diagnose and support people with mental health conditions and improve cognitive and psychological health and wellbeing across the life course.
For example, it can help us understand how learners of different ages and with different levels of ability can be better supported, and show us how coaching, training and engagement can enhance performance, productivity or wellbeing.
Research in psychology at Heriot-Watt University is grouped by three main themes:

Our brains and cognitive abilities develop from childhood through to old age. Research within this theme explores those changes in healthy children and adults, as well as developmental conditions, dementia and stroke. Research spans from language to social cognition, including memory, motor control and body representation. A strong aspect of this theme is theoretically-informed translational interventions, making use of state-of-the-art multidisciplinary techniques such as robotics and virtual reality.
Lifespan Health and Wellbeing
Issues explored in psychology are inherently linked to wellbeing across the lifespan, affecting fields from education to health. Research in this theme explores health-promotion activities in children and adolescents, healthy ageing and mental health issues in developmental conditions.
Work, Society and Environment
Findings from psychology can impact people and society in several ways. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, research in this theme explores behaviour in the workplace, assessing risk in the environment, and interventions to improve workplace performance.
All applications will be reviewed within the department with a shortlisting decision made based on qualifications, the suitability of the research proposal and the availability of a supervisory team. Applicants must have the equivalent of a first or upper second class honours undergraduate degree in psychology or related discipline. A masters degree (with a dissertation mark of 65% or higher) or relevant research experience may also be required. Please state clearly on your application that you are applying for a PhD scholarship and quote the relevant project reference.
Research proposal (1500 words or less)
On the front page of your research proposal, please ensure that you state the relevant project reference.
The research proposal should contain: an introduction or outline of the proposed topic; a statement of objectives and/or specific research questions; a brief summary of some of the relevant literature which supports the research objective(s); an indication of the intended research methodology; an indication of the theoretical structure and/or conceptual outline; a provisional timetable of the major phases of the research process; results expected from the research e.g. practical value of the research or possible contributions to knowledge or policy or methodology.
At this stage we are not looking for a definitive document but merely an indication that you have thought through most of the above issues.
Please note that work submitted may be subject to screening via plagiarism software.
Academic transcripts and degree certificates
Copies of full academic transcripts from all previous academic degree courses and copies of degree certificates for degrees already awarded. If you are currently pursuing a degree course please provide all available marks to date.
If you have references available these should be submitted with your application. If they are not currently available please ensure that you provide the names and contact details, including email addresses, of two academic referees on the application form.

Where English was not the medium of instruction during previous education, applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5. Other qualifications may also be considered.

Global PhD Student Fellowship in Psychology
The NYU Abu Dhabi Global PhD Student Fellowship is offered in the areas of Cognition and Perception, as well as Social Psychology in collaboration with the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science .
The program generally involves one to two years of classwork at NYU New York, followed by three to four years of research at NYU Abu Dhabi. If selected, the doctorate is fully funded under the NYU Abu Dhabi Global PhD Student Fellowship.

The Dubai Campus is accredited by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and fully licensed to teach its degrees in Dubai. All graduates receive a British degree that is accredited by Royal Charter in the UK.

Introduction
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is designed to prepare students for a career as an academic or a researcher in the public or private sector. The program’s focuses on applied business research, making it relevant to the growth of the UAE/GCC/MEA economies. The PhD program generally takes 4 years to complete. The curriculum involves three academic pillars:
- Research methodology courses (i.e. Research Design, Quantitative and Qualitative methodology seminars, Pedagogy, etc.).
- The Dissertation/ Thesis.
The PhD Program Objectives
By the end of the PhD program, the candidate is expected to have fulfilled the following learning objectives:
- Develop key pioneering research questions that can be explored empirically to provide innovative and creative solutions to specific problems
- Explore advanced theoretical knowledge to develop research skills through original research
- Integrate advanced knowledge into managerial and organizational contexts and roles
- Prepare for teaching responsibilities in higher education (for those who expect to enter the teaching profession)

Information for Prospective Candidates
The PhD program generally takes 4 years to complete. The curriculum involves three academic pillars:
- Research methodology courses (i.e. Research Design, Quantitative and Qualitative methodology seminars, Pedagogy, etc.)
- Concentration courses (Management, Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management, Strategic Management, Marketing, Finance, Accounting) – students admitted to the program must choose one of these concentrations
Admission Requirements for 23-24
Each year, candidates are admitted as a cohort limited to a maximum of 10. Candidates must demonstrate the potential for sustainable success in the PhD program. The admission process consists of four phases – eligibility, application, assessment and registration, and orientation.

For Application & Admission to UD-PhD
Eligibility conditions for admission into the first year of UD PhD Programs:
- Must hold a Master’s degree.
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or more out of 4.0 in the Master’s degree. No provisional admission is allowed for Doctoral programs.
- Have at least 3 years of teaching experience or managerial experience.
- No provisional admission is allowed for applicants with lower TOEFL/IELTS scores.
- Students who studied in an English medium Master’s program which required for admission an English proficiency score of 550 on the TOEFL, or its standardized equivalent as approved by the MOE, are exempt.
Candidate must provide the following documents for application process:
- Completed application form.
- Provide 2 satisfactory letters;
- Provide a certified copy of the last 2 degrees (Bachelors and Master’s degree).
- Valid Bachelor’s equivalency or Master’s equivalency (Degree outside UAE).
- Provide an updated Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Submit a research proposal.
- Attend an interview with the PhD Program Committee.
- Pay application fees AED 3,000 (non-refundable).
- Valid passport copy.
- Valid emirates ID.
- Campus violation list (provided by registration department).
- Original Transcript of the last 2 degrees (Bachelors + Masters).
- Recent photos (4 copies).
- IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent.
- Employment letter.
Interview and Registration Phase
Each candidate will have to attend a personal interview with the PhD Program Committee to evaluate the suitability of the candidate to the PhD Program. The PhD committee comprises of at least two senior faculty members from UD in addition to the Director of the PhD program. The candidate will be advised on the outcome of his/her application within 48 hours of the interview date. Once the decision for admission has been made, the PhD Program Committee transfers the original file of the candidate to the Registration Department at UD, which will register successful applicants as UD students, subject to payment of appropriate tuition fees. Following registration, the PhD Program Office will advise each student on course selection.
The registered students will participate in the UD PhD Orientation Week, meeting fellow students and faculty members and becoming familiar with UD regulations, procedures, services and facilities.

About the Diploma of Psychological Studies
The Diploma of Psychological Studies is designed to provide you with a broad introduction to the field of psychology in a supportive, student-centred learning environment. The program will prepare you for further study or for an entry level professional career.
You will explore a broad range of subject areas relating to psychology as practice, study and science. You will have a better understanding of career planning and management, as well as develop literacy skills that will enhance your academic and professional communication and language capabilities.
Once you complete the Diploma of Psychological Studies, opportunities include progression to the second year of the degree program in Psychology, or an entry level position in the business sector.

Students will study the following 6 units, plus two general electives from other diploma programs*.

Successful completion of the Diploma will allow you to enter into second year of a bachelor’s degree at Murdoch University Dubai Campus with 8 units of credit.
You must complete and pass the required eight units for your Diploma.

Dr Magdalena Mosanya holds a PhD in Psychology from the Institute of Psychology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, an MSc in psychology from Middlesex University, and an MA in cultural anthropology and communication from Silesian University. She is the Discipline Lead for Psychology and Criminology, as well as Student Counsellor at Murdoch University Dubai.
Dr Magdalena’s extensive research experience is reflected in her authorship of numerous scientific publications and speeches given at international conferences. Her research interests span a wide range of areas, including intercultural communication, the well-being of third culture kids (TCKs), sports psychology, and women's emancipation. In addition, she is proficient in various therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and EMDR.

The Associate Professor is a key leadership role within the university’s academic community, making a positive, significant and strategic contribution through teaching, learning and scholarship. The post holder will be an externally-recognised teacher of excellence, responsible for the innovative development and management of teaching and learning activities which allow for individualised learning and cater for students from diverse and international backgrounds, and for influencing the pedagogy of the subject. In addition, all Associate Professors will take on subject leadership responsibilities, including acting as a line manager within the relevant subject area, to include all aspects of line management, such as performance management, workload/resource management, objective setting and appraisals and/or undertake a strategic cross faculty or university responsibility that requires the delivery of a particular portfolio of activity across the relevant area.
Ideal Candidate
You will hold a PhD in psychology (or equivalent professional qualification and experience). You will be familiar with delivering teaching and learning within a Higher Education or academic-level delivery within commercial settings. You will be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the University community. You will share DMU’s passion to provide outstanding and inclusive outcomes for all of its students.
