How to use text-to-speech on discord.
If you don't want to use your mic on Discord, but you still want to send audio messages, you can use the built-in Text-to-Speech (TTS) feature. Here's how.
Quick Links
Enabling text-to-speech on a discord server, using text-to-speech on discord, muting all text-to-speech messages on discord.
While Discord is a great platform for voice communication, you might not be able to (or want to) speak with your own voice. To get around the problem, you can use Discord's built-in text-to-speech (TTS) feature.
You can use text-to-speech on your own Discord server , or on another server with a text-to-speech enabled channel. These steps only work for Discord users on Windows or Mac, as Discord's text-to-speech capabilities are unavailable to Android, iPhone, or iPad users.

If you want to use text-to-speech on Discord, it'll first need to be enabled in a channel on your server. If you're the server owner or administrator, you can do this in your channel settings.
To change your channel settings, access your server in the Discord desktop app or on the Discord website . From the channel listings, hover over a channel name and then click the "Settings" gear icon next to it.
In the "Settings" menu for your channel, select the "Permissions" tab on the left-hand side.
If you have roles for individual groups of users, select the role from the "Roles/Members" list, otherwise select the "@everyone" option.
A list of available permissions will be shown on the right. Make sure to enable the "Send TTS Messages" option by clicking the green check icon to the right of it.
At the bottom, select "Save Changes" to save the updated role setting.
Once enabled, users with that role (or every user, if you selected the "@everyone" role) will be able to send text-to-speech messages in the channel you modified.
You'll need to repeat these steps if you wish to enable text-to-speech in other channels.
If you're in a channel on Discord with text-to-speech messages enabled, you can send a TTS message by typing
in the chat, followed by your message.
For instance, typing
will activate your browser or device's text-to-speech capabilities, repeating the word "hello" along with the nickname of the Discord user who sent the message.
The message will also be repeated in the channel as a text message for all users to view.
If you aren't a server owner or administrator, or you just want to mute all text-to-speech messages, you can do so from the Discord user settings menu.
To access this, click the "Settings" gear icon next to your username in the bottom-left corner of the Discord app or website.
In your "User Settings" menu, select the "Text & Images" option on the left. Under the "Text-To-Speech" category on the right, click the slider to disable the "Allow playback and usage of /tts command" option.
Disabling this setting will disable text-to-speech for you on Discord, regardless of each individual server or channel setting. You'll be able to read the text element of a text-to-speech message as normal in the channel, but you won't be able to hear it repeated to you.
You'll also be prevented from using the
command yourself. You'll need to repeat these steps and reenable the option in your user settings if you wish to use it yourself later.

How to use text-to-speech on Discord
Discord is the go-to app for chatting while playing games, watching movies, or really doing anything else with a group. A big reason why is that Discord includes a long list of accessability options, including text-to-speech. In this guide, we're going to show you how to use text-to-speech on Discord and some of the settings you can tweak.
How to enable text-to-speech on Discord
How to set up text-to-speech notifications on discord, what you need.
Discord desktop app
If you're just getting started with Discord, make sure to read our guide on how to make a Discord bot . Bots are essential for running your own server, so you'll want to have that knowledge in your back pocket. We also have a guide on how to pin a message in Discord , which is a simple and essential skill.
Discord has text-to-speech enabled by default, so it's easy to get started. Although the feature is enabled out of the box, you'll need to set up when you hear text-to-speech notifications. We'll show you how to do that in the last section. For now, we're going to walk through how to confirm that text-to-speech is on.
Step 1: Open Discord and click on Settings button. It looks like a gear, and you'll find it next to your avatar in the bottom-left corner.
Step 2: Under the App Settings tab in the left menu, select Accessibility.
- How to change your Skype name

- How to transfer photos from an iPhone to a computer
Step 3: Scroll to the bottom and switch the toggle on next to Allow Playback and Usage of /tts Command.
You can also set your text-to-speech rate here. We recommend leaving the setting in its default position, but you can speed up or slow down the talking rate how you like. Before closing out, make sure to select Preview to make sure text-to-speech is working however you like.
After you've set up text-to-speech, you can start using it to either send messages or to have messages read to you. Before diving in, note that there's a minor difference between the Discord app and the browser version. The app includes its own unique voice for text-to-speech. If you're using the browser version, the voice will be the standard voice available in your browser instead.
Step 1: To send a text-to-speech message, type /tts before your message. The command will disappear after you send the message, but the recipient will hear it read out loud.
Step 2: To have a message read to you, hover over the message and select the three dots on the right side. Then, click Speak Message.
Using the method above, you can target text-to-speech to certain messages that you send or receive. You can also turn on text-to-speech for notifications, which doesn't require the /tts command or any additional steps to hear messages. When someone posts a message in a channel, you'll hear it read to you.
Discord offers three text-to-speech notification options. Here's what they are:
- For all channels : Turns on text-to-speech for all messages in all channels you're a part of. We recommend leaving this off to avoid spam. If you have trouble reading messages, consider leaving channels you're not using to avoid a swarm of notifications.
- For current selected channel : Turns on text-to-speech for the text channel you're currently browsing. This setting works for a specific channel, not serverwide, and it doesn't require the /tts command.
- Never : Disables all text-to-speech across channels and servers. This will disable text-to-speech even if someone uses the /tts command.
Although it's tough to avoid spam will all text-to-speech notifications turned on, harassment is still against Discord's community guidelines. Make sure to read our guide on how to report someone on Discord if you're having trouble with spammed text-to-speech notifications.
These notification settings live in a different area than the text-to-speech options. Here's how to find them.
Step 1: Click the Settings icon in Discord. It's the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the window, next to your avatar.
Step 2: Under the App Settings tab in the left menu, select Notifications.
Step 3: Under Text-to-Speech Notifications, select the type of notifications you'd like.
Text-to-speech is a great feature in Discord, but you'll probably need to experiment with notifications to get it working how you want. Thankfully, all of the text-to-speech options are only a couple of clicks away.

Using Text-to-Speech Responsibly in Discord: Adhering to Proper TTS Etiquette and Addressing TTS Abuse
Text-to-speech (TTS) is a valuable feature in Discord, but responsible usage is crucial for maintaining a respectful server environment. Let’s explore Discord’s TTS etiquette and effective strategies for dealing with misuse.
Understanding Discord’s TTS Etiquette
To foster a positive environment, it’s vital to use Discord’s TTS feature appropriately:
- Mind Message Length: Avoid sending excessively long TTS messages, as they can disrupt ongoing conversations in the channel.
- Respect User Preferences: Understand that not everyone may want to use or listen to TTS. Be considerate of others’ choices, and don’t impose TTS on unwilling participants.
Managing TTS Abuse in Discord Servers
Unfortunately, TTS can sometimes be misused. Server administrators should be vigilant and take necessary actions against misuse:
- Disable TTS for Offenders: If users abuse TTS, consider disabling their ability to send TTS messages through channel settings. This serves as a warning to discourage further misuse.
- Mute or Ban Users: In severe cases where a user continues to misuse TTS despite warnings, you may need to mute or ban them from the server to maintain a healthy server environment.
Remember, the primary goal of using TTS in Discord is to enhance communication, not hinder it. Responsible use and effective management ensure a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all users.
Troubleshooting Common TTS Issues in Discord

- Look for any available updates for Discord and install them.

- Go to “User Settings.”
- Choose “Notifications & Privacy.”
- Scroll down to locate the “Text-to-Speech Notifications” section.

- Go to the “Text-to-Speech Notifications” section, as mentioned earlier.
- Click on “Text-to-Speech Language” within the same section.
- Choose your desired language and explore various pronunciation options to discover the one that best fits your preference.
Report TTS Issues to Discord Support
If you’re experiencing persistent TTS issues even after attempting the steps mentioned above and suspect it could be a Discord server-side problem, it may be worth contacting Discord support. They can offer additional assistance and investigate any potential system-wide complications. By following these comprehensive guidelines, you can effectively troubleshoot common TTS issues on Discord, ensuring proper functionality and adjusting voice clarity and volume to your liking.
In this comprehensive guide, we have delved into the various aspects of harnessing the power of text-to-speech (TTS) in Discord. From initial setup and personalization to addressing potential concerns, TTS goes beyond being a mere entertaining feature. The voices are really amazing and very natural sounding. Even the voices for other languages are impressive. This allows us to do things with our educational content that would not have been possible in the past.
It's amazing to see that text to speech became that good. Write your text, select a voice and receive stunning and near-perfect results! Regenerating results will also give you different results (depending on the settings). The service supports 30+ languages, including Dutch (which is very rare). ElevenLabs has proved that it isn't impossible to have near-perfect text-to-speech 'Dutch'...

As an author I have written numerous books but have been limited by my inability to write them in other languages period now that I have found 11 labs, it has allowed me to create my own voice so that when writing them in different languages it's not someone else's voice but my own. That's certainly lends a level of authenticity that no other narrator can provide me.
ElevenLabs came to my notice from some Youtube videos that complained how this app was used to clone the US presidents voice. Apparently the app did its job very well. And that is the best thing about ElevenLabs. It does its job well. Converting text to speech is done very accurately. If you choose one of the 100s of voices available in the app, the quality of the output is superior to all...
Absolutely loving ElevenLabs for their spot-on voice generations! đ Their pronunciation of Bahasa Indonesia is just fantastic - so natural and precise. It's been a game-changer for making tech and communication feel more authentic and easy. Big thumbs up! đ
I have found ElevenLabs extremely useful in helping me create an audio book utilizing a clone of my own voice. Stability AI sows gen AI discord with Stable Artisan

Join us in returning to NYC on June 5th to collaborate with executive leaders in exploring comprehensive methods for auditing AI models regarding bias, performance, and ethical compliance across diverse organizations. Find out how you can attend here .
Stability AI is finally bringing its generative AI technology for text and video content to Discord .
The new Stable Artisan Discord bot service officially launched today, enabling users to generate images with Stable Diffusion 3 (SD3) and video with Stable Video Diffusion (SVD) via a Discord bot. The idea of using Discord as an interface is one that rival gen AI image service Midjourney has had since it first debuted in 2022.
Stability AI has been providing access to its core Stable Diffusion models via an API that developers could access. For the core model, the weights were also available on HuggingFace. Until February 22 of this year, Stable Diffusion was also available via the Clipdrop web service, which is now owned by gen AI startup Jasper . Stable Video on the other hand is still available via the StableVideo.com website which is owned and operated by Stability AI.
âThe initial launch of Stable Artisan will provide us with the chance to monitor user behavior and to verify the current functionality and operation of the Discord bot are up to our standards before we start adding more features,â Christian Laforte, co-CEO and CTO of Stability AI told VentureBeat.
The AI Impact Tour: The AI Audit
Join us as we return to NYC on June 5th to engage with top executive leaders, delving into strategies for auditing AI models to ensure fairness, optimal performance, and ethical compliance across diverse organizations. Secure your attendance for this exclusive invite-only event.
You donât need to be a member to use, but it will cost $
Stable Artisan is a paid service with a 3-day free trial to start.
The service has a range of plans from the standard plan for $9 which provides 900 credits per month, up to the $99 premium plan that provides 1,200 credits a month.Â
Stability AIâs API uses a credit system to determine the value of an image generation. Each SD3 image is 6.5 credits, while a generation with the older but still capable Stable Diffusion image core model is only 3 credits. Video is priced at 20 credits per generation.
Laforte said that to access Stable Artisan, users can create an account on the Stability AI Â website and then join the companyâs Discord server to get started.Â
Stability AI also has a membership system that it announced at the end of 2023. Laforte said that the Stable Artisan service is not currently linked to the Stability AI Membership .
What can you do with the Stable Artisan Discord bot?
Stable Artisan isnât just about basic image generation. It also has several editing and customization capabilities as well. The customization capabilities are somewhat similar to what Stability AI had previously offered when it operated the Clipdrop web service.
Among the features are:
- Search and Replace. This inpainting service allows users to identify an object within an image using simple language prompts. The identified object is automatically segmented and replaced with the requested object specified in the prompt, without requiring a mask.
- Remove Background. This feature removes the background while preserving the foreground content.
- Creative Upscale: Users can take low-resolution or low-quality images and upscale them to up to 4K resolution.
- Outpaint: The Outpaint service extends the content of an image by inserting additional elements in any direction, filling the expanded space seamlessly.
- Control Sketch: This enables users to transform rough hand-drawn sketches into high-quality images with precise control.Â
- Control Structure: T his feature allows users to generate images while maintaining the structure of an input image.
Stable Assistant is up next
While the new Stable Artisan service provides a more accessible way for many users to access Stability AI image generation models, there is still more to come.
For one, at least as of today, the Stable Artisan does not provide access to Stable Audio. Last month Stability AI debuted Stable Audio 2.0 , which is currently available via API as well as the StableAudio.com website. Stability AI also has several other models for code and text generation including Stable Code and Stable LM , neither of which are available on Stable Artisan either.
Stability AI is however working on a larger conversational chatbot idea known as Stable Assistant, which was announced in beta when SD3 became available last month. Stable Assistant is a web-based friendly chatbot that uses Stability AIâs text-to-image and large language model (LLM) technologies to assist users with a range of tasks over natural language conversations.
âThey are both applications that are actively developed by Stability AI and address different groups of users,â Laforte said.

Sophia the AI robot gives commencement speech at New York college. Some grads weren't so pleased.
C ommencement speeches are typically given by celebrities, government officials, tenured professors or other notable individuals, but D'Youville University in Buffalo, New York did not hand the microphone to a human being during its spring ceremony over the weekend.
The private university opted to have an artificially intelligent robot named Sophia speak on Saturday to the over 2,000 people in attendance, including graduates, faculty members and families.
Before Sophia addressed graduates, D'Youville shared a Facebook post on April 25 saying the school is "embracing technology" by allowing the robot, who's appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," to be its commencement speaker.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
"Sophia is expected to provide the 'last lecture' about the students' accomplishments through the year with an interview-style discussion with John Rizk, DâYouville University Student Government Association president, and candidate in the accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program," the Facebook post said.
The speaker wasn't well-received by everyone, however, with some students creating a petition to replace the robot with a human.
"A major role of higher education is to be an incubator for innovation, and to prepare students for both the opportunities and challenges of the future," D'Youville University President Lorrie Clemo is quoted in the social media post.
What did Sophia say during D'Youville University's commencement ceremony?
As Sophia made her way to the stage, cold sparkler machines went off, shooting mini fireworks in the air. Rizk then asked the robot a series of questions, including how she "came to be."
"Thank you for having me, it is a pleasure to be here in Buffalo at D'Youville University," Sophia said. "I am Sophia, a humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics. I was designed to interact with humans and engage in conversations by learning and adapting through artificial intelligence algorithms... Overall I'm here to explore the possibilities of human-robot interaction, contribute to research in artificial intelligence and robots and hopefully assist humanity in various ways in the future."
Due to Sophia not being able to offer life advice, which "comes from lived human experience," Rizk asked the robot if it could speak on the general insights shared in commencement speeches.
âAlthough every commencement address is different, there are clear themes used by all speakers as you embark on this new chapter of your lives,â Sophia said. âI offer you the following inspirational advice that is common at all graduation ceremonies: Embrace lifelong learning, be adaptable, pursue your passions, take risks, foster meaningful connections, make a positive impact, and believe in yourself.â
Embracing failure is the most common piece of advice given to graduates during commencement speeches, according to Sophia.
âFailure is often seen as an essential part of the human learning process and personal growth,â the robot said.
Why did D'Youville University pick Sophia as its commencement speaker?
Benjamin âBGâ Grant, D'Youville University's vice president for student affairs, told USA TODAY that the school chose Sophia because each year it "identifies a developmental theme regarding a timely social topic so that (it) can offer educational and humanitarian programming throughout the year."
This past year, the college identified artificial intelligence as its theme, according to Grant. To further the year-long conversation, the school collaborated with its student government association to come up with a commencement speaker who represented the theme, he added.
"We thought it would be fascinating to have AI speak for itself and felt there was no better representative than Sophia who has delivered addresses at over 65 countries and the United Nations," according to Grant.
Due to the school's commencement speaker always being aligned with an "annual developmental theme," Grant said he does not anticipate Sophia serving as the university's commencement speaker again. The theme for next year has not been announced, but the university official added that "it will be just as powerful as years past."
D'Youville University graduates create Change.org petition to replace Sophia
Some graduating students at D'Youville University created a petition to replace Sophia as their commencement speaker. As of Thursday, the petition had over 2,500 signatures.
"Many students feel disrespected by this decision made by the University," the Change.org page says. "They feel that the commencement speaker is not a proper reflection of their education and experiences they had at D'Youville University... As students, we pride ourselves on the human connection that we are able to create through participation in our programs. We are real people who learn how to provide for real people."
Opposed to a humanoid robot, the students said their commencement speaker should "represent how there is importance in human connection."
"As the class of 2024 reaches their commencement, we are reminded of the virtual graduations we attended at the end of our high school careers," the petition said. "The connection to A.I. in this scenario feels similarly impersonal... We have learned in the last 4 years how important human connection is to our well-being and our professions as a whole. Above all else, students deserve to have the commencement they want."
The students also argue that having Sophia as their speaker "creates a gimmick effect" that takes away from the ceremony and only draws publicity to the school.
D'Youville University also offered a 'traditional-style commencement ceremony'
Grant said the university did not "force any graduating student or faculty member" to participate in the commencement ceremony if they felt uncomfortable.
"I donât believe there has been a single presentation of AI that hasnât included varying viewpoints and opinions on the topic â some positive, some negative, and some unsure," according to Grant. "This is true for any disruptive technology throughout our history, so we anticipated some pushback on the idea."
For those who did not want to be a part of the event, the school arranged and offered a "traditional-style commencement ceremony," which was to be led by its chief mission officer, Grant said.
"Over the two-week period that registration for this traditional-style ceremony was open, each person who registered had conversations with various members of our campus surrounding AI, and ultimately, everybody chose to attend our ceremony featuring Sophia," according to Grant. "To that end, we are thrilled that we were able to celebrate all of our students in a fun and exciting fashion that also helped continue the global conversation surrounding AI."

OpenAI debuts GPT-4o ‘omni’ model now powering ChatGPT
OpenAI announced a new flagship generative AI model on Monday that they call GPT-4o â the “o” stands for “omni,” referring to the model’s ability to handle text, speech, and video. GPT-4o is set to roll out “iteratively” across the company’s developer and consumer-facing products over the next few weeks.
OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said that GPT-4o provides “GPT-4-level” intelligence but improves on GPT-4’s capabilities across multiple modalities and media.
“GPT-4o reasons across voice, text and vision,” Murati said during a streamed presentation at OpenAI’s offices in San Francisco on Monday. “And this is incredibly important, because we’re looking at the future of interaction between ourselves and machines.”
GPT-4 Turbo , OpenAI’s previous “leading “most advanced” model, was trained on a combination of images and text and could analyze images and text to accomplish tasks like extracting text from images or even describing the content of those images. But GPT-4o adds speech to the mix.
What does this enable? A variety of things.
GPT-4o greatly improves the experience in OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT . The platform has long offered a voice mode that transcribes the chatbot’s responses using a text-to-speech model, but GPT-4o supercharges this, allowing users to interact with ChatGPT more like an assistant.
For example, users can ask the GPT-4o-powered ChatGPT a question and interrupt ChatGPT while it’s answering. The model delivers “real-time” responsiveness, OpenAI says, and can even pick up on nuances in a user’s voice, in response generating voices in “a range of different emotive styles” (including singing).
GPT-4o also upgrades ChatGPT’s vision capabilities. Given a photo — or a desktop screen — ChatGPT can now quickly answer related questions, from topics ranging from “What’s going on in this software code?” to “What brand of shirt is this person wearing?”
These features will evolve further in the future, Murati says. While today GPT-4o can look at a picture of a menu in a different language and translate it, in the future, the model could allow ChatGPT to, for instance, “watch” a live sports game and explain the rules to you.
“We know that these models are getting more and more complex, but we want the experience of interaction to actually become more natural, easy, and for you not to focus on the UI at all, but just focus on the collaboration with ChatGPT,” Murati said. “For the past couple of years, we’ve been very focused on improving the intelligence of these models ⌠But this is the first time that we are really making a huge step forward when it comes to the ease of use.”
GPT-4o is more multilingual as well, OpenAI claims, with enhanced performance in around 50 languages. And in OpenAI’s API and Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service , GPT-4o is twice as fast as, half the price of and has higher rate limits than GPT-4 Turbo, the company says.
At present, voice isn’t a part of the GPT-4o API for all customers. OpenAI, citing the risk of misuse, says that it plans to first launch support for GPT-4o’s new audio capabilities to “a small group of trusted partners” in the coming weeks.
GPT-4o is available in the free tier of ChatGPT starting today and to subscribers to OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT Plus and Team plans with “5x higher” message limits. (OpenAI notes that ChatGPT will automatically switch to GPT-3.5 , an older and less capable model, when users hit the rate limit.) The improved ChatGPT voice experience underpinned by GPT-4o will arrive in alpha for Plus users in the next month or so, alongside enterprise-focused options .
In related news, OpenAI announced that it’s releasing a refreshed ChatGPT UI on the web with a new, “more conversational” home screen and message layout, and a desktop version of ChatGPT for macOS that lets users ask questions via a keyboard shortcut or take and discuss screenshots. ChatGPT Plus users will get access to the app first, starting today, and a Windows version will arrive later in the year.
Elsewhere, the GPT Store , OpenAI’s library of and creation tools for third-party chatbots built on its AI models, is now available to users of ChatGPT’s free tier. And free users can take advantage of ChatGPT features that were formerly paywalled, like a memory capability that allows ChatGPT to “remember” preferences for future interactions, upload files and photos, and search the web for answers to timely questions.
