Exploring the Online Learning Experience of Filipino College Students During Covid-19 Pandemic

This study was endeavored to understand the online learning experience of Filipino college students enrolled in the academic year 2020-2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were obtained through an open-ended qualitative survey. The responses were analyzed and interpreted using thematic analysis. A total of 71 Filipino college students from state and local universities in the Philippines participated in this study. Four themes were classified from the collected data: (1) negative views toward online schooling, (2) positive views toward online schooling, (3) difficulties encountered in online schooling, and (4) motivation to continue studying. The results showed that although many Filipino college students find online learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic to be a positive experience such as it provides various conveniences, eliminates the necessity of public transportation amid the COVID-19 pandemic, among others, a more significant number of respondents believe otherwise. Knowing that education has been inaccessible and ineffective to some students in the Philippines, it is crucial to know the efficacy and success of the new learning setup during this time of the pandemic to assess if these new modalities are beneficial to the students or not. This paper reviewed and studied the various perceptions and lived experiences of selected students in a private university in Manila regarding online classes amidst the pandemic. Using a phenomenological approach, the researchers gathered data by interviewing 15 students who are attending online classes. Findings and results were drawn on the themes created by the researchers. It can be seen that majority of the students find online classes ineffective and only cater the privileged. Furthermore, lessons and discussions are difficult to digest using the current mode of learning. These findings signify a need to improve the mode of learning in order to provide a quality and effective education to students despite the current crisis faced by the country. Understanding students' experiences towards online learning can help in devising innovative pedagogical approaches and creating effective online learning spaces. This study aimed to solicit the perception of 80 undergraduate students in one of the leading private institutions in the Philippines towards the compulsory shift from a blended to fully online learning modality amidst the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The study used a descriptive research design involving online surveys which contained Likert scale items and open-ended questions assessing one's capacity for and the challenges to online learning, as well as the proposed recommendations for enhancing the overall online class experience. Descriptive statistics was used to group data across different subsets. Likewise, a content analysis of qualitative variables of the actual experiences of online classes using the school's learning management system was prepared. Results indicate four self-perceived challenges in online learning: technological and infrastructural difficulties, individual readiness, instructional struggles, and domestic barriers. The study recommends re-evaluation and modification of current online learning guidelines to address the aforesaid challenges and build a genuinely resilient model for technology-driven and care-centered education based on student recommendations and challenges experienced.

Universities cancelled in-person classes and shifted to online education in many countries due to COVID-19 Pandemic. This research aimed to investigate the perceptions of university students on online education during Pandemic COVID-19. In this mixed research design study, data were collected from randomly selected 500 students studying at various universities in North Cyprus. A mixed study was used in this research and frequency, Anova, and PostHoc tests were used to analyze quantitative data and descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques were used to analyze the qualitative research data. Students agreed with 11 different benefits of online education, such as allowing a better understanding of topics, being educated by different educators and universities. They stated 10 disadvantages such as overload of homework and exams, fear of online assessment, and passive learning. Students explained 7 different obstacles such as not having updated knowledge about using different online platforms, not having a high-quality digital tool to access online courses, internet interruptions, not having a suitable space to study. Data obtained from this research may help universities in North Cyprus to determine and eliminate their weaknesses in online education and in addition re-design their online instructional strategies to meet the various needs of their students. A similar type of research can be done at each university in other countries. Data obtained at each university level may help universities to improve their online education, which will be accessible by all students for equity in education.
Students’ Perceptions towards Online Education during COVID-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Study

The outbreak of COVID-19 has had a critical impact on the educational system around the world. Unwillingly, all educational institutions transited to online teaching. This study endeavoured to address the perceptions of Kurdish EFL university students of online education compared to on-campus education in terms of domains of preference, effectiveness, learning satisfaction, and challenges. To do so, data were collected quantitively as well as qualitatively. A sample of 200 university Kurdish EFL university students (112 female & 88 male) from private and public universities of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region-Erbil participated. The results showed that the overwhelming majority of the students have a negative attitude toward online education. Similarly, they preferred and considered on-campus education more effective. The findings also revealed that the overwhelming majority of the students stated online education do not suffice their learning satisfaction. Finally, the challenges articulated by the students during online education included external factors, such as unstable internet connection, electricity besides internal ones, like time management, concentration difficulties, and opening cameras due to social issues.

NEW NORMAL EDUCATION
For the Philippines, the new normal of education comes in the form of “Blended Learning”. As the country continues to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, students needed a safe way to learn.
Due to this, the country initially held online classes. Additionally, the Department of Education (DepEd) also had modular learning schemes where students can learn via workbooks at home.
But, as the Philippines got access to more vaccines, the government is now aiming to conduct face-to-face classes in the next semester. Through this, we get a glimpse of the new normal, “ blended learning “.
Using a mix of traditional face-to-face lectures and online-based instruction, DepEd aims to promote a fresh take on education. However, with a new system coming into play, it’s bound to have some advantages and disadvantages.
ADVANTAGES AND DISTADVANTAGES OF BLENDED LEARNING
Clearly, going into a new form of education can be a daunting task. Due to this, we need to clearly weigh out the advantages and disadvantages of this new normal of education.
SAFETY – Amid the coronavirus pandemic, allowing students to safely learn from the comfort of their homes has become the priority.
LEARNING AT YOUR OWN PACE – Through online classes, activities, and lectures, students can now learn at their own pace. Thus, this promotes time management and effective personal study habits.
RESPONSIVE FEEDBACK – During traditional classes, quizzes, homework, and projects take time to check. As such, teachers can take days to finish an entire class’s worth of assignments. But, through online platforms, teachers can give automated feedback.
FLEXIBILITY – Each individual student has their own distinct learning style. Thus, teachers may have a hard time adjusting to all of them. But, with blended learning, teachers can use new online platforms to include activities like learning through podcasts, videos, and other forms of media to promote student participation.
Unfortunately, with the many advantages online learning has over traditional education, there are still key areas that need to be accounted for.
DISADVANTAGES OF NEW NORMAL EDUCATION
EFFECTIVENESS – One of the most difficult aspects of online learning for many students is the inability to focus on a screen for lengthy periods of time. Students are more likely to be quickly distracted by social media or other websites while they learn online. As a result, teachers must maintain their online lessons concise, interesting, and interactive in order to keep students focused on the topic.
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES – Another major issue with online classes is the lack of internet access. While internet penetration has increased by leaps and bounds in recent years, maintaining a stable connection with adequate speed remains a challenge in smaller cities and towns, especially in highland areas of the Philippines.
There can be a loss of continuity in learning for children if pupils or teachers do not have access to the internet on a regular basis. This has a negative impact on the educational process.
TEACHER TRAINING – Teachers must have a basic understanding of how to use digital modes of learning in order to teach online. However, this is not always the case. Teachers may have only a rudimentary understanding of technology. They don’t always have the resources and tools they need to offer online classes.

Online Classes in the PH Push Through Amid the Pandemic

As the Philippines enters various lockdowns every month — with Manila on its third strictest lockdown this 2021 since COVID-19 pandemic broke out last year — online classes in the Philippines will continue. Most students and teachers would like to go back to face-to-face classes, but they really can’t do anything for now other than follow the government’s recommendation to continue mobile learning.
The Philippine government, together with the Department of Education (DepEd), announced last August 5 that the school year for this 2021 will officially open on September 13 and shall end on June 24, 2022. However, the fact remains that most youth can’t attend school, whether it is online or modular class, due to lack of material resources and provision. Hence, they become out-of-school youths .
Number of Out-of-School Youth Continually Rises Amid the Pandemic
An alarming number of students can’t attend online classes in the Philippines right now, and are thus are forced to drop out of school. On the other hand, parents are left to struggle to find work and daily source of income just to feed their families and provide for their children’s tuition fees.
According to the data from DepEd , 4 million students were not able to enroll for the last school year. This figure will keep growing unless there’s an upgrade in the educational system, or the government’s action to provide funds for students’ mobile learning .
What are Online Classes?
As one form of flexible learning widely used right now, online classes in the Philippines are courses held on the internet. Because of the pandemic, mobile learning is the way to go to continue learning. Either student attends online class or modular style.
In line with the new normal, the Department of Education established the Basic Education – Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) as a response to protect the health and safety of the students, educators, and personnel from the ongoing pandemic. This aims to provide quality distance learning with the use of self-learning modules in digital form, radio, television, and the internet.
Advantages of Online Classes in the Philippines
Online classes are currently the type of educational system most education institutions use these days. Here are the advantages of online classes in the Philippines:
- It is convenient because students can reach their teachers and classmates online within the day.
- This arrangement offers flexibility because students can study anytime and teachers can teach from the comforts of their own homes, without having to stress what to wear and how to travel from home to school.
- It is the safest way to study right now because they don’t have to leave the house and worry about getting sick or catching the virus.
- Students can spend more time and catch up frequently with their families.
Disadvantages of Online Classes in the Philippines
Having that said; the impact of the pandemic forces students to endure the hassles that come with online classes. Here are the disadvantages of online classes in the Philippines:
- Lack of mobile gadgets to use for online classes hampers a student’s education.
- Time can be hard to manage properly. There is an expectation for students to juggle studies and help with household chores the entire day.
- Just to avoid catching the virus, both students and teachers struggle mentally and physically as they try to adjust to this mobile learning and teaching.
- Students who live in the rural areas lack internet connection. Others have to climb mountains, cross rivers, and walk for miles just to get signal or connect to free Wi-Fi to attend online class or download modules.
- The bills for electrical and internet connection double, as students stay at home and manage their studies. This also leaves out street children who have no means of paying for their families’ basic needs.
As online classes in the Philippines take off, street children are the ones having the hardest time adjusting to the new norm. 1. KalyEskwela Mobile Community Learning Hub (KMCLH)
KMCLH provides access for street children’s beneficiaries to new learning technologies . This initiative aims to help them adapt to the new normal setup of online classes in the Philippines during this pandemic era.
In KMCLH, street children can use mobile tablets and access the internet for their online classes, all for free inside the KalyEskwela van. They also have street educators to facilitate and help the beneficiaries in their school-related tasks or concerns.
2. School Supplies Distribution Program
Childhope Philippines also held school supplies distribution to the street children. As of June 30, 2021, the foundation has distributed 882 sets of school supplies to the street children. Due to quarantine restrictions, the parents received the school supplies on behalf of the children. The new supplies encouraged the youngsters to attend and be ready for their online and modular classes.
3. Online Alternative Education Sessions
Another initiative Childhope Philippines implemented are the Online Alternative Education Sessions. The sessions are about Skills for Life, Life Skill Life Goal Planning, Gender Sensitivity, Teenage Pregnancy and Adolescent Reproductive Health. The sessions aim to help the participants to understand gender, become socially responsible by managing negative emotions and stress, make use of goal setting, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in particular situation.
A Success Story of a Street Child
Because of continuous support and donation to Childhope Philippines, many street children received help and achieved their success stories. These include the story of Khay , a street child who sold sampaguita graduated with a degree in tourism. She’s one of the many beneficiaries of Childhope Philippines.
From the start of Khay’s childhood, she had to beg and sell sampaguita from different churches in Cubao, Quezon City; and Sampaloc, Manila. Her parents could not afford to send her to school with the little earnings they made. This encouraged her to sell sampaguita in her elementary years while attending school at the same time.
She was nine years old when she joined the sessions led by street educators. Khay actively took part in Childhope’s activities and learned rights and responsibilities as a child, proper hygiene and basic health care, and values like hard work and determination.
Khay was seen as leadership potential by Childhope, who in turn helped her hone her skills. Then, in her third year in high school, Khay was chosen to be a beneficiary of Childhope’s Educational Assistance Program (EAP). Because of her perseverance to finish studies, along with the donors’ support flooding generously for her schooling, Khay was able to complete her college studies.

As such, online learning gives them the flexibility that they needed. In addition, online learning also gives an opportunity to students and professionals who would not have otherwise gone back to school to get the necessary qualifications. However, students who have enrolled for online learning do not benefit from the one-on-one interaction with their peers and teachers. The essay shall endeavor to examine the differences between online classes and the traditional classes, with a preference for the later.
Online classes mainly take place through the internet. As such, online classes lack the regular student teacher interaction that is common with traditional learning. One advantage of the traditional classes over online classes is that students who are not disciplined enough may not be able to sail through successfully because there is nobody to push them around. With traditional classes however, there are rules to put them in check. As such, students attending traditional classes are more likely to be committed to their education (Donovan et al 286).
Another advantage of the traditional classes is all the doubts that students might be having regarding a given course content can be cleared by the instructor on the spot, unlike online learning whereby such explanations might not be as coherent as the student would have wished.
With the traditional classes, students are rarely provided with the course materials by their instructors, and they are therefore expected to take their own notes. This is important because they are likely to preserve such note and use them later on in their studies. In contrast, online students are provided with course materials in the form of video or audio texts (Sorenson and Johnson 116).
They can also download such course materials online. Such learning materials can be deleted or lost easily compared with handwritten class notes, and this is a risk. Although the basic requirements for a student attending online classes are comparatively les in comparison to students attending traditional classes, nonetheless, it is important to note that online students are also expected to be internet savvy because all learning takes place online.
This would be a disadvantage for the regular student; only that internet savvy is not a requirement. Students undertaking online learning are likely to be withdrawn because they hardly interact one-on-one with their fellow online students or even their instructors. The only form of interaction is online. As such, it becomes hard for them to develop a special bond with other students and instructors. With traditional learning however, students have the freedom to interact freely and this helps to strengthen their existing bond.
Online learning is convenient and has less basic requirements compared with traditional learning. It also allows learners who would have ordinarily not gone back to school to access an education. However, online students do not benefit from a close interaction with their peers and instructors as do their regular counterparts. Also, regular students can engage their instructors more easily and relatively faster in case they want to have certain sections of the course explained, unlike online students.
