Master's Thesis

PSIA students have the option of undertaking a Master thesis, in lieu of an internship or a semester exchange at a partner university. Sciences Po Academic rules in Article 37 specify that Master curricula include “a semester of extramural activities” and “as applicable…a Master thesis.”

This is a selective track offered to PSIA students, who must apply for the opportunity. Only the strongest proposals are approved by PSIA's scientific community. Every year, this track produces highly relevant and successful research work. Since 2021, the best Master thesis defended at PSIA have been published online by Sciences Po digital library .

PSIA Master thesis’ Regulations

• Course consistency: undertaking a Master thesis is optional and the approval of the Academic Advisor is necessary.
• Individuality: The Master thesis is an individual research project, it cannot be done in a group ;
• Thesis Director: The research project is conducted under the direction of a faculty specialist in the same subject area. Please note that Sciences Po faculty will be preferred. The academic advisor approves the choice;
• Prerequisites: Students interested in pursuing a Master thesis must enrol in and validate two courses within the “Methods” concentration during the first year of their Master program;
• The Master thesis track is open only to students who must register for a third semester "hors les murs", as per the Sciences Po regulation. Students who are enrolled in a one-year Master program, as well as dual degree students who spend only their first year at PSIA, are waived from this obligation, and they are not eligible for the Master thesis track.
• The thesis defence will constitute both the validation of the Master thesis as well as the required Grand Oral.

The Master thesis Track is mainly directed at students with previous work experience presumably waiving the internship requirement, or students aiming for a PhD / academic career.

Proposal Documents (to be sent to the Academic Advisor)

• Curriculum Vitae
• Cover letter (students must indicate the two methods coruses they have taken at PSIA, or describe methods courses and any research internships undertaken prior to PSIA, attaching transcripts of any previous methodology coursework from another institution).
• Research proposal (5 pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman 12, not including bibliography). Students may want to include the following sections: literature review; research question; proposed research design; information about empirical data and/or modalities of fieldwork if relevant. See a template for your reference.
• Reference letter from the potential Thesis Director
• Transcript of the first semester at PSIA, and a list of courses they are enrolled in for the second semester.

When required, field research may be undertaken within the third semester.

Students producing a Master thesis may receive exemptions from The mandatory 14-week internship.

The Master thesis length is between 20,000 and 30,000 words, excluding appendices. Electronic versions of the thesis must be sent to the thesis' supervisor, the academic advisor, the third member of the jury and  [email protected] .

Format of Thesis : Overview

The defence jury is composed of three members approved by PSIA and must include:

• The Thesis Director
• An Expert in the field of research (professional or scholar)
• A faculty or administrative officer representative of the student’s Master (in charge of reporting)
• At least one member of the defence jury should be a university professor or researcher

Thesis Defence

It consists of two parts: a 10 minute presentation then a 20 minute discussion with the examiners

The validation of the Master thesis will bear 30 credits.

Master Thesis Calendar

• To be eligible to undertake a Master thesis during their third semester, students must take and validate two courses within the “Methods” concentration by the end of their first year – ideally one in semester 1 and one in semester 2. Students who wrote a thesis or long research essay (minimum 10,000 words) during their undergraduate studies may apply for a waiver of one of the two mandatory methods courses. 
• March 15, 2023: Submission of full written proposal to their Academic Advisor by 2 pm.
• Late April 2023: Confirmation if they have been accepted onto the Master thesis Track for the third semester by their Academic Advisor. In all cases, progression to the third semester is subject to successful completion of the first year.
• September-December 2022: Third semester (Off campus; 'hors les murs');
• January 31, 2023: Master thesis submission deadline: electronic version to be sent to [email protected] , academic advisor, thesis supervisor and third member of the jury.
• Mid-April – May 2023: Master thesis Defence

Recruiters don't want to read identical and mainstream cover letters! In order to make a difference you should customize your letter.

-> The CV's purpose is to provide a rational and quantifiable vision of your career and abilities. -> The cover letter should complete the CV by displaying a more personal facet of yourself, your motivations and your assets for a job or an internship.

Be methodical

A cover letter is composed of three seperate parts :

• A first paragraph in which you sincerely express the reasons you applied to this company/organisation in particular (and not a summary of the information found on the Internet about it),
• a second paragraph in which you highlight your assets regarding a specific job or a company/organisation’s needs,
• and a last paragraph in which you mention the advantages of a working collaboration.

Write short and straightforward sentences. As for CVs, recruiters have little time to devote to the reading of cover letters. Their objective is usually to quickly understand what your motivations are in joining the company/organisation, your strengths in regard to a specific or potential need of theirs, and occasionally to find the answer to a question they may have concerning some aspects of your career.

Pay attention to your spelling, mistakes will surely catch the recruiter’s attention and make a poor impression.

Be positive!

In a cover letter, you have to put your best face forward and point out all the benefits there are to hiring you. Instead of writing «I have no experience in consulting but I am very motivated", you should instead say "Thanks to the classes I attended during my master's degree, I have gained extensive knowledge of the public sector, and therefore will be able to..." ! It's not about cheating; it's about introducing yourself from a positive angle.

Sciences Po Paris: nouvelle mobilisation d'étudiants pro-palestiniens

Quelques dizaines d'étudiants mobilisés en faveur des Palestiniens ont décidé d'occuper un nouveau bâtiment de Sciences Po Paris jeudi soir au lendemain d'une évacuation par la police d'un autre site de l'établissement, dans le sillage des actions menées dans des universités américaines.

Après la fermeture à 21H00 des grilles du bâtiment historique de l'établissement, situé rue Saint-Guillaume, une journaliste de l'AFP a pu constater la présence d'environ 80 étudiants dans la rue, encourageant et apportant des oreillers et denrées à leurs camarades restés à l'intérieur des locaux après le vote d'une nouvelle occupation décidée lors d'une assemblée générale

"Même si Sciences Po ne veut pas, nous on est là. Pour l'honneur de la Palestine et tous ceux qu'on assassine", chantaient les étudiants rassemblés dans le calme devant le siège de la prestigieuse école.

De 50 à 70 étudiants sont susceptibles d'être présents dans ce bâtiment, selon des jeunes militants ou sympathisants du comité Palestine Sciences Po joints par l'AFP.

Le comité réclame notamment "la condamnation claire des agissements d'Israël par Sciences Po" et "la fin des collaborations" avec toutes "les institutions ou entitées" complices "de l'oppression systémique du peuple palestinien".

Il réclame en outre l'arrêt de "la répression des voix propalestiniennes sur le campus".

Mercredi soir, une soixantaine d'étudiants engagés en faveur de la cause palestinienne avaient occupé l'amphithéâtre extérieur d'un campus de l'école dans le 7e arrondissement.

"Après échange avec la direction de Sciences Po, la plupart ont accepté de quitter les lieux" dans la nuit, mais "un petit groupe d’étudiants a néanmoins refusé et il a été décidé que les forces de l’ordre procèdent à l'évacuation du site", a indiqué mercredi matin la direction de l'établissement dans un message à l'AFP.

Elle "regrette que les nombreuses tentatives de dialogue afin qu’ils quittent les lieux dans le calme n’aient pas permis de trouver une autre issue à cette situation".

Une dizaine de tentes avaient été installées dans la cour de ce campus mercredi soir, selon des témoignages recueillis par l'AFP.

A l'arrivée de la police, "50 étudiants ont quitté d’eux-mêmes les lieux, 70 ont été évacués dans le calme à partir de 00H20", selon la préfecture de police, qui ne déplore "aucun incident".

Cette mobilisation a été organisée par le Comité Palestine de Sciences Po. Elle s'est déroulée alors que plusieurs universités américaines sont prises dans la tourmente provoquée par le conflit à Gaza.

Selon le Comité Palestine Sciences Po, ses militants ont été "portés en dehors de l'école par plus d'une cinquantaine de membres des forces de l'ordre" et "une centaine" de policiers les "attendaient également dehors".

"Il y a un double diplôme entre Science Po et Columbia (à New York), donc on a des camarades là-bas et les étudiants communiquent entre eux", a expliqué Hicham, membre du Comité Palestine de Sciences Po. "On se place dans la même ligne que ces universités partout dans le monde.".

Jeudi encore, 150 à 200 étudiants, notamment de l'université Paris 1, ont manifesté place du Panthéon pour protester contre la venue du président Macron pour un discours sur l'Union européenne à la Sorbonne, a constaté l'AFP.

"On refuse que Macron vienne tranquillement à la Sorbonne dans un moment où il y a un génocide en Palestine", a indiqué à l'AFP Lorélia Fréjo, de l'organisation étudiante Le Poing Levé Paris 1.
