What attachments and meanings do owners associate with colonial-era African art in Belgium? To what extent might post-colonialism debates or other contemporary discourses have impacted owners of privately held colonial-era African art in Belgium?

Application Deadline: 5 June 2023

6. fully funded phd position in public management.

You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of public management and on the following topic: “The rise of social media, fake news and government distrust have led to an increasingly hostile environment for many public sector organizations, leaving them struggling with their reputation. In order to explain negative reputations, scholars assume that more bureaucratic organizations are more likely to face negative reputations. However, evidence for this claim is non-existent. Furthermore, there are theoretical indications that negative reputations may paradoxically lead to more bureaucracy. Through a multi-method design, the aim of this project is threefold: first, examining the causal effect of bureaucraticness on the reputation of public sector organizations; second, examining the causal effect of negative reputations on bureaucraticness; and third, analyzing the causal mechanisms underlying these effects.”

8. fully funded phd position in history.

The Mediterranean is often seen as a dividing border between two worlds: North and South; Christian and Muslim. This pattern has been mostly influenced and supported by nationalist historiographies, which tended to create borders and accentuate differences between areas that were originally connected. DiplomatiCon-project aims precisely to break free from this one-sided view on the history of the region and to present the first example of History of Diplomacy that truly reflects the late medieval context of interactions and exchanges between the Islamic and Christian worlds.

Based on the approaches and methodologies advocated by the New Diplomatic History and Connected History, the project will focus on the three most important actors of the late medieval world — the Mamluk Sultanate of Cairo on the Islamic side and the Italian polities as well as the Crown of Aragon on the Christian side— and it will challenge the common narratives of political and cultural antagonism between the two worlds by pointing at the spheres of contact and interaction where an informal type of diplomacy could be performed.

Yes, if you’ve been a top-performing student in your previous studies, you’ve a good shot at getting a scholarship in one of the Belgian universities. Besides academic excellence, Belgian scholarships are usually awarded based on your country of residence, professional experience and motivation.

What kinds of Belgian scholarships for international students are there?

You’ll come across 2 main types of financial aid to study in Belgium : government scholarships for foreign students and scholarships sponsored by individual universities . Belgian scholarships will also differ in how many expenses they cover , from a tuition fee reduction to a fully-funded scholarship.

“ Scholarship or grant can be one of the ways to prove your solvency for a student visa application . ”

Can I study for free in Belgium?

The short answer is yes if you’re eligible for one of the fully-funded scholarships . However, most of those scholarships in Belgium are reserved for exceptional students from developing countries and spots are very limited .

Luckily, if you’re granted only a partial scholarship grant, there are many ways to cover the rest of your study expenses. For example, you can get a work-study job at your educational institution, a part-time job in your city , or a paid internship .

If you end up not getting any financial aid at all but you’re from one of the least developed countries , consider studying in one of the universities of Wallonia or Brussels . The fees for students from those countries are reduced from €4,175/year to €835/year, which is the amount EU students pay. Also,

“ always research the websites of the universities you’re interested in to see if they offer any financial support besides the scholarships we list in this article. ”

The governments of Flanders and Wallonia and Brussels also issue study allowances for students from disadvantaged families . However, strict nationality requirements apply to non-Belgians.

Computer Science: Fully Funded Swansea University PhD Scholarship: Continuous self-monitoring of simulated robot motion for intent expression

Job information, offer description.

Funding provider:  Swansea University

Subject areas:  Intelligent Robotics and Virtual Reality

Project start date:

  • 1 October 2024 (Enrolment open from mid-September)

Supervisors:

  • Primary Supervisor- Dr Julian Hough ( [email protected] )
  • Secondary Supervisor- Dr Daniele Cafolla

Aligned programme of study:  PhD in Computer Science

Mode of study:  Full-time

Project description:

When robots move, human interaction partners and observers ascribe an intention to the robot. For example, in a simple pick-and-place scenario where a robot is facing two different objects, as its arm begins to move towards one of the objects, human observers ascribe a probability to the robot’s intention of picking up one or the other object, a probability which changes over time (Dragan et al, 2013). The degree to which a robot’s intention becomes clearer as it moves, or its legibility, depends on several factors, including the task at hand, the capabilities of the robot, trajectories of its motion and the viewing perspective of the observer (Nikolaidis et al, 2016).

This project will develop continuous models of action legibility using these sources of information from data collected in a virtual reality (VR) Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) scenario. The models’ measure of action legibility will be evaluated against human response times of user confirmations in a variety of scenarios, using appropriate statistical testing to test the efficacy of the models.

The project forms part of a wider effort for developing an effective VR HRI toolkit for improving interactive fluidity between robots and humans. The successful candidate will join the new Intelligent Robotics group in the Computer Science Department in the Computational Foundry in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University, in addition to interfacing with the established Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) FIT lab. The candidate will be working alongside other researchers on the FLUIDITY project on human-robot interaction, and those working on other real-world applications.
