How do we assess you?

A big part of your online MBA (Top-Up) work will be the opportunity to create and take ownership of a detailed piece of research relating to a management issue. The portal includes an extensive digital library including thousands of journal titles, eBooks, and academic and industry databases which you can use to research your assignments and projects. All of these materials are provided to you free of charge, and contain all the research information you’ll need to complete your degree with us.

ilearn is also integrated with Zoom, making it easier to chat with your course tutor during your scheduled seminar sessions. You can even integrate our study materials into your Kindle, making it possible to study wherever you have you Kindle handy.   Studying online doesn’t mean studying alone. As well as receiving regular feedback and guidance from your course tutor, you’ll be studying with likeminded students who you can meet with through our Unitu community, and you’ll have access to community message boards to discuss your course and the topics being raised within it. We’ve even set up community boards embedded into each of the course modules so you can have discussions with your tutor and classmates on the topics you’re currently learning.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this MBA (Top-Up) course, we need to see that you have:

• 120 credits at Level 7 in a broadly-based business/management award, such as a Postgraduate Diploma in Business, or an equivalent international qualification.

English Proficiency

• If your Level 7 qualification was taught in English, this can serve as your proof of English proficiency. If you studied outside the UK, your institution may be able to provide a medium of instruction letter demonstrating that your Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma was taught in English
• Alternatively, an English Language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in each component) if English is not your first language.

This course awards a CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management & Leadership Practice and offers CMI Foundation Chartered Manager Status *

You will undertake a work-based research project in which you will demonstrate the acquisition of the knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities appropriate to the award of the MBA degree.

Every postgraduate taught course has a detailed programme specification document describing the programme aims, the programme structure, the teaching and learning methods, the learning outcomes and the rules of assessment.

Entry requirements

• Minimum 120 Level 7 credits or equivalent in a business or management subject. 
• Examples of such qualifications include: • a Diploma in Management Studies from a British University • Edexcel Extended Diploma in Strategy Management  • Pearson BTEC Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership • Postgraduate Diploma in Business and/or Management related studies • NCC Education PG Diploma in Business Management 
• Qualifications and academic performance will be reviewed by the Programme Director.
•  Advance Post Graduation Diploma in Maritime Business Management from IMBA.
• Candidates will be required to be competent in English. Candidates whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each element) or equivalent in a secure English language test. If the candidate’s English language does not meet the above standard, they will be given the opportunity to complete one of the University’s pre-sessional English language courses. MBA Advanced Entry (Top Up) Route

The MBA Advanced Entry (Top Up) Route is specially designed for students that hold an approved Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in a Management subject. Students with this qualification have the opportunity to apply directly onto the programme and complete 60 credits to qualify for the award of MBA.

The course consists of the Research Methods module (20 credits) and the Dissertation (40 credits) on a topic of their choice, making it a popular option for individuals committed to developing their careers in senior management.

The course content is delivered through a distance learning mode of study; information and guidance given to the student mirrors which would have ordinarily been given during the induction week at either Cardiff Metropolitan University or one of our partners. There are scheduled interactive webinars for Research Methods followed by one to one sessions with a designated supervisor for the Dissertation. Help and guidance is provided along the way plus online tools to support development.

On successful completion of the course, the student receives a Cardiff Metropolitan University certificate in 'Master of Business Administration' as well as a transcript and HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Report). The student is also invited to attend the graduation ceremony based in Cardiff.

Course Content

The course content consists​ of two parts and takes approximately seven months to complete. The first module is Research Methods (8 weeks) followed by the Dissertation (3.5 months, elapsed time is approximately 7 months), where the student will be required to submit an 8000-10,000 word dissertation on their chosen subject, preferably related to their line of work.

The Research Methods module introduces research as practised in business and management disciplines. Following satisfactory completion at the exam board, students will progress to the dissertation.

At the end of the Research Methods module, students should be able to:

Interpret existing research as a prelude to carrying out further investigation and demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a range of research designs and their appropriate utilisation.

Source, evaluate and appropriately reference information from a range of sources.

Integrate the findings of existing research to ask a new research question.

Engage in critical thinking when reading and comprehending research articles.

Critically evaluate a range of quantitative and qualitative research paradigms.

Conceptualise a problem; formulate a methodology, aim and objectives; design a research strategy, collect, analyse, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data as appropriate.

Apply theoretical principles underlying descriptive and inferential statistics.

Select and justify the most appropriate analyses, interpret the results, and write up the results accurately and completely.

Develop a robust Research Proposal appropriate for an MBA Dissertation.

On successful completion of Research Methods, you will move onto the Dissertation, which provides an opportunity for an in-depth study of a topic relevant to management. It requires students to:

Critically evaluate major schools of thought within relevant management theory.

Translate theory into practice through the study of its application in the real world.

Undertake empirical research in this area.

Draw conclusions about the implications of the results for managerial decision-making, in particular strategic.

After completion of the dissertation, the student should be able to:

Formulate research questions at a level appropriate for a Masters.

Critically review the relevant literature.

Select the most appropriate methodology for the collection of data, justifying that choice.

Apply that methodology to collect primary or secondary data.

Select a method of analysis appropriate to their research question, within the context of what is commensurate to Master's level.

Present the results in a manner that is clear and comprehensive.

Draw conclusions about the results for the conduct of management.

A Curriculum Vitae.

A Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in a Strategic Leadership and Management subject awarded by ATHE, LRN, NCC Education, Pearson or SQA​ in the last 5 years (students need to submit both certificate and transcript on application).

An Undergraduate Qualification Equivalent to UK Bachelors 2:2 or higher – work experience may be considered for candidates not meeting this requirement.

This Master of Business Administration (MBA) Top-Up is for people who already hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies or an equivalent postgraduate qualification.

Course structure

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, class discussions, case studies, group work, presentations, and applied study.

Assessment is mainly through the dissertation and assignments, as well as exams in some subjects.

Course modules

For the 90-credit Top-Up, you will study one of the 30-credit MBA core modules and complete your 60-credit MBA Research Project. The module you study will depend on when you start and your entry qualifications.

MBA Research Project (60 credits)

Critically examine a suitable topic by completing a research project into an organisation or industry sector with which you are familiar. Complete a series of personal competence, digital skills and research methods seminars all designed to support your research project. Develop a critical understanding of the role and importance of research into sustainable business practice, and by investigating an authentic business issue, you will be better prepared for your return to, or entry into, the world of work, along with an enhanced awareness of your own professional development as a future business leader.

You can access free Wi-Fi throughout the University campus, so you can work from anywhere. If you don't want to carry a laptop around, just use one of the University’s PCs or Macs. We have hundreds of computers for you to use in the Murray Library, St Peter's Library, and the David Goldman Informatics Centre. If you ever have any technical problems, just ask the friendly helpdesk team.

The St Peter’s Library contains over 31,000 books related to business, economics, management, human resources, marketing, strategy and tourism, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We also subscribe to a comprehensive range of print and electronic journals so you can access the most reliable and up-to-date academic and industry articles.

2024/25 fees are:

• £8,500 if you're from the UK/Europe*
• £9,000 if you're an international student

*European Union (EU), EEA (European Economic Area), and Swiss nationals who don't qualify for the EU Settlement Scheme are classed as international, however, for 24/25 admission, you'll receive a European student fee scholarship and will pay the home tuition fee rate for the duration of your studies. • You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
• When applying you must include a reference from your current employer. The reference should clearly state how long you have been employed by them and give a breakdown of your job content and roles and responsibilities.
• Your application form must be accompanied by a reflective overview of the managerial responsibilities you have undertaken to date.

We take a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face sessions with online and practical work as appropriate. You can expect a range of learning and teaching methods, including face-to-face or online lectures, seminars, tutorials, discussion groups, guest speakers and master classes. We'll expect you to devote a significant amount of time to guided independent study. This can include, for example, general background reading, online activities, assessment work and preparation for sessions.

The Bolton MBA fosters an independent learning culture and offers a rewarding yet challenging learning experience. Our assessment strategy facilitates real-world learning and authentic assessment that serves several functions. The obvious and primary function is to evaluate your achievement. However, assessment also helps you organise and develop your learning. We'll provide feedback to help you understand your strengths and weaknesses.

Assessments fall into two general categories: formative and summative. Formative assessments don't contribute to your overall module grade. However, they are an integral part of a module's learning strategy, so you are required to complete them. They will be marked, and you'll receive feedback on your level of achievement. Summative assessments, on the other hand, are activities for which the marks will contribute to your overall module grade. You'll also receive feedback on these assessments so you can see what you've done well and where you can improve.

We employ many different forms of assessment, such as coursework, reports, case studies, oral presentations, research proposals and an extended project.

This Master of Business Administration (MBA) (top-up) programme is for those who already hold a qualification in Business at the postgraduate level. This is an opportunity for learners to enhance their career prospects. If you are an experienced manager or at the early stage of your management career and have already achieved a postgraduate qualification in business administration, management, strategic leadership or an equivalent, then you can top up that qualification to achieve a full MBA.

The programme is delivered as a part-taught provision with the flexibility to complete the course through distance learning after the initial research methods training.

The NBA just issued its first gambling ban in 70 years, booting Jontay Porter for committing the league’s ‘cardinal sin’

The NBA has put its sneaker-clad foot down on players’ sports betting. The league banned Toronto Raptors forward-center Jontay Porter for life after he shared confidential information with bettors and limited his own play time to fulfill certain bets, it said in a Wednesday announcement. It’s the first time in 70 years that the league has banned a player for gambling.

“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in the release. 

Silver called the players’ betting a “ cardinal sin ” in the sport. League rules say that no NBA employees , including players, coaches, and referees, are allowed to gamble on NBA games. In March, Minnesota Timberwolves player Rudy Gobert was fined $100,000 for making a money gesture at a referee, insinuating the official influenced a game’s outcome because of bettors. According to the NBA’s 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement , players are required to attend at least one anti-gambling training session.

The NBA says it opened an investigation into Porter in late March, days after a March 20 game when Porter claimed he was ill in order to limit his play time to three minutes, influencing the outcomes on bets placed on him. The investigation found that Porter told people he knew were NBA bettors about his health. A bettor then placed a $80,000 prop bet that would result in a $1.1 million payday if Porter underperformed in the game.

In the months before, Porter placed a total of 13 wagers on games varying from $15 to $22,000, per the NBA, though none of the bets were on games in which Porter participated, according to the announcement. 

The NBA did not respond to Fortune ’s request for comment. Attempts to reach Porter through a representative were not successful.

A new sports betting era

The floodgates for American sports betting opened in 2018 after the Supreme Court struck down a federal ban implemented in 1992. Prior to the ruling, Americans spent an estimated $150 billion in illegal wagers on sporting events every year. 

Experts predicted that the legalization of sports betting would lead to a proliferation of gambling opportunities, not only changing the financial landscape of the sport by rerouting money spent on illegal betting to broadcasting and partnership deals, but also changing fans’ relationship with American sports.

“Fans will become much more focused on gambling than following a team,” Tulane Law School professor Gabriel Feldman told the New York Times . “It will make every second of every game of every week interesting to fans as it will give everyone something to root for.”

Indeed, legalized sports betting has had the intended impact: A record 68 million Americans made a wager during this year’s NCAA March Madness, spending $2.72 billion. But the illegal sports betting market drew an even bigger crowd and $4.3 billion in wagers.

Sports betting popularity also coincides with a rise in team personnel getting into hot water over gambling. The longtime translator for Los Angeles Dodgers sensation Shohei Ohtani is being charged with federal bank fraud and gambling debt crimes, including stealing $16 million from the baseball star. MLB has a multi-year partnership with online gaming platform FanDuel Group.

The NBA isn’t exempt from the lure of the growing sports betting market: It has deals with sports betting platforms DraftKings , FanDuel, and BetMGM. In February, LeBron James and DraftKings announced a partnership , with James serving as a “talent ambassador” in a multi-year contract.

The ghost of sports gambling past

Sports betting feels like a new problem for basketball, but it’s also a reprise of a pervasive issue the sport faced in the mid-20th century.

Back in 1950, the City College of New York swept the NCAA and National Invitation Tournament—an unprecedented run of successes. But CCNY, as well as seven other schools, were implicated in a scandal that saw 86 games fixed between 1947 and 1950. Over 30 students were found to be involved.

The sport couldn’t shake the controversy. A decade later, college basketball was rocked by another game fixing scandal, this time with 37 students and 32 schools implicated. At the center of the scandal was Jack Molinas, who played 29 games with the NBA Fort Wayne Pistons and was banned from the NBA in 1954 for betting on his own games. In 1962, he was charged with being the ringleader of the 1961 grift, colluding with mobsters and bribing players to fix games. He used points shaving—a practice of changing a game’s score without changing the outcome—to help create profitable outcomes for bettors. Molinas served five years in prison and was killed in 1975 at his New York home.

But points shaving practices continued in the decades following. Boston College player Rick Kuhn conspired alongside mobsters to shave points off games in 1978 and 1979. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the judge who sentenced him saying the sentence should serve as  a warning to future basketball stars. 

“A strong argument can be offered,” U.S. District Judge Henry Bramwell said, “that a substantial term of incarceration imposed on this defendant will be recalled in the future by another college athlete who may be tempted to compromise his performance.”
