You Can’t Go Wrong With…

If you’re at a loss thinking about what to buy a Ph.D. graduate as a present, you can’t go wrong with cash, checks, and gift cards.

There’s no denying that PhDs can be incredibly expensive. Just look at the data from EducationData.org , which states that federal graduate student borrowers have $91,148 average loan balances. It doesn’t matter if they earned their degree in person or online — debt is debt. Cutting a check for any amount can help a PhD graduate buy what they need (or want). They can also choose to pay the amount toward their debt.

Of course, giving cash or a check isn’t everyone’s idea of a good present. In that case, you can always give a gift card .

On Amazon, you can also choose gift cards from specific brands. For example, if you’d like to give the gift of tech, you can opt for an Apple gift card between $25-$500. And if you’re looking for PhD graduation gifts for her , try a Sephora gift card  between $25-$250.

How Much Should You Spend on PhD Graduation Gifts?

The cost of your PhD gift depends on your relationship with the graduate. It can be anywhere from $10-$300, or maybe even more if you wish — but never spend more than you can afford. Here’s a general guide for how much you might want to spend:

  • Acquaintances : <$30
  • Friends : $25-$50
  • Closest friends and relatives: $50-$100
  • Significant others, children, and close loved ones: $100-$300+

Avoid superfluously expensive gifts for people you aren’t close with — that’ll just make them uncomfortable!

Finishing a doctorate is no easy feat — even the online PhDs  take endless hours to complete. Bottom line? Graduating with a PhD is a cause for celebration! And what better way to celebrate your new PhD-holder loved one than with a thoughtful present ?

PhD graduation gifts don’t have to be expensive or luxurious. They can be something as simple as a mug or a shirt with a witty PhD-related message. Doctorate graduation gifts can even be sentimental, like an engraved business card case.

If someone you know recently achieved a PhD (or even an MBA ), this list of the best graduation gifts for PhD students might offer some gift inspiration.

It can be challenging to come up with ideas for PhD graduation gifts, but there’s always a fantastic option out there waiting for you. But remember: if you can’t come up with any ideas that feel right, everyone loves cash or gift cards!

Do you have any other PhD graduation gift suggestions? Leave them in a comment below!

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you give a phd graduate.

The perfect PhD graduation gifts for doctoral graduates depend on your preference — unless the recipient specifically requests something. Cash, checks, and gift cards are popular options but may seem impersonal. Instead, you might give the graduate something pragmatic, like food, or something heartfelt, like a craft. Of course, the 15 suggestions on this list are also great PhD gifts.

What Are Good PhD Graduation Gifts for a University Graduate?

It truly depends — you can give something generic like a mug or shirt with a witty PhD-related saying or something more aligned with your recipient’s interest if you know them well.

What Is the Going Rate for PhD Graduation Gifts?

It really depends on your relationship with the recipient. Gifts can cost anywhere from $10-$300 and sometimes even more. If you’re more an acquaintance than a loved one, choose something on the lower price end to avoid making the recipient uncomfortable.

Is it OK to Give a Check as a PhD Graduation Gift?

Absolutely! Although some people may find checks or cash impersonal, a PhD graduate could probably use the money. After all, they can put it toward student loans or buy something they really need.

Experiences of a London PhD student and beyond

Gifts for a PhD Student

phd chemistry gifts

Wondering what could be the perfect present for a friend, family member or colleague who are working towards a PhD? Choosing gifts for a PhD student can be tricky, we’re often living in shared houses with limited personal space and there are only so many novelty mugs a person can store!

Whether it’s to celebrate passing their viva, a special occasion or simply to show that you care, here are a few of my favourite suggestions.

Experience Gifts

I’m a big fan of gifting experiences rather than ‘things’ and I believe they are particularly well suited to those early on in their PhD, as a lot of students may be fairly new to the place they’re now studying. PhD stipends only stretch so far, so gifting experiences can be a great way to build memories for those with limited disposable income.

When I lived in London during my PhD I always asked my family for gift vouchers for experiences. This allowed me to visit escape rooms, walk over the O2, go for afternoon tea and see some fantastic West End shows (courtesy of Love Theatre vouchers).

Experiences can be varied to fit every personality type and some may also allow you to support great causes at the same time, such as Migrateful cooking classes for those in London, Bristol or Brighton.

Screenshot of Migrateful's webpage offering cookery classes.

Tripadvisor is a great place for finding ideas for activities. Groupon can also be handy place to check for deals, just make sure that any restrictions on dates/times won’t be an issue.

Subscription Gifts

Lots of us sign up for subscriptions these days, whether for the obligatory Netflix or for various apps. If you’re stuck for a gift for a PhD student why not offer to pay for a few months of a subscription to their favourite apps?

Some ideas for app subscriptions:

  • Super Duolingo for language learners
  • Headspace or other mindfulness and meditation apps which could come in handy with managing stress during a PhD

Relaxing Gifts

It’s always nice to have a break from work and a voucher for a massage or spa day could provide much needed relaxation. I’d again suggest using Tripadvisor to find recommendations and try to find a deal through Groupon.

Check with the giftee whether they’d be able to attend mid-week. If so you may be able to get more for your money with an off-peak rate and they’ll find it easier to relax with fewer people around.

A PhD student can never have too much food, particularly if it’s quick to prepare or readily available for snacking. Food gifts are brilliant for every budget and here are a few of my favourite suggestions.

Brownies by Post

My partner recently went on the hunt for the best vegan brownies and came across the Best Ever Brownie Company. I can attest that their brownies are absolutely delicious and everyone I’ve sent them to has loved them.

Screenshot of the Best Ever Brownie Company homepage

If you know your PhD student well then a gift hamper can be a lovely way to show that you care.

Hampers put together by someone you know can be a fun way to try out things you wouldn’t normally have seen. For Christmas/birthdays by Dad has started giving a selection of new vegan foods he finds and they’re always appreciated. If in doubt pick a theme and roll with it. For my sister’s birthday I recently made up a shoe-box sized hamper with American treats all themed around rainbow sprinkles!

If you don’t live nearby you can also find some lovely hampers online from companies such as:

  • Social Supermarket
  • Fortnum & Mason

Whether homemade or shop bought I think hampers make great gifts for a PhD student.

Healthy Ready Meals

If you’re keen to gift more substantial meals then COOK and Mindful Chef are two options. Both allow you to buy gift vouchers which your recipient can use to buy whatever they fancy.

I’ve gifted COOK vouchers to several friends and family members and the meals feel home cooked and are very tasty. Do check whether your giftee lives near a store, as if not they’ll probably want to order several items in one go and as such will need a fair bit of freezer space. Therefore COOK vouchers may not as suitable for those living in house shares.

I haven’t personally tried Mindful Chef ready meals, although I have tried several of the recipe boxes, but they look like a fantastic choice for anyone looking for quick and healthy meals.

Takeaway Voucher

If you’re keen to get a food gift but not sure what’s best then a takeaway gift voucher could be the perfect solution. Just Eat do gift vouchers and they’re sure to go down well.

Educational Gifts

PhD students are by nature very curious and plenty will be keen to expand their knowledge beyond their particular field. I’m personally always keen to learn more about the world so anything which helps me expand my horizons goes down favourably.

Subscription to a Learning Platform

Brilliant – Provides interactive courses to help people expand their knowledge of concepts within Maths, Computer Science, Data Analysis, Programming, Science and Engineering. Subscriptions start from a three month period.

Nebula – Nebula has advert-free educational videos and podcasts from over 150 Youtube content creators. Some of the videos on the platform are also available to watch on Youtube with ads, but there are around 60 original shows on the platform as well.

Subscription to Kiwi Crate

If you’re keen to gift a physical present then a subscription to Kiwi Crate could be a lovely idea.

For those who like working with their hands the Eureka Crate is a great way to build skills and explore engineering in a fun and immersive way. Who wouldn’t want to build their own desk lamp? They also do Maker crates for those with an artistic side.

Screenshot of KiwiCo's Eureka Crate webpage showing a young adult assembling a desk lamp kit.

Practical Gifts

So far nearly everything on our list has involved either experiences or consumables, but there are a few practical gifts which could be of great benefit to a PhD student and not take up too much space.

Whether it’s for keeping water cool or keeping coffee hot, a drink container will always come in handy. It could also help with minimising costs if drinks are prepared at home and then taken into uni.

Macbook Air Laptop

A recommendation of a £1000 laptop probably isn’t going to be applicable for most readers. However, if you’re a family member looking to spend money on a computer for someone starting a PhD I can highly recommend MacBook Airs. These days almost all software can run on both PC and Mac and even the M1 MacBook Air which is now several years old is more than powerful enough for most people.

Be sure to make use of Apple’s educational discount for up to 10% off.

Moleskine Notebook & Fisher Space Pen

Notebooks always come in handy, so why not gift your PhD student one at the top of the range. Combine a moleskine notebook with a fisher space pen and you’ve got the perfect way to keep experiment notes orderly and neat.

Moleskine notebooks are vegan, come in a range of colours and you can even pay extra for personalisation. Fisher space pens were originally designed for use in zero gravity and can be used upside down, underwater and at extreme temperatures. Perfect for all kinds of science-ing!

For those who don’t own one already an e-reader is a great way to get back into reading. I personally found reading to be a great way to take a break from my PhD . E-readers such as a Kindle are light and easy to pop in a bag!

Through Project Gutenberg you can access loads of classic books for free and if you opt for a Kindle there are often Amazon offers available for 99p books.

Novelty Gifts

If you are keen to get your PhD student a novelty gift I’d recommend buying a handmade item from a small business on Etsy. I’m a big fan of getting something practical such as a notebook, mug, keyring, chopping board etc.

Just make sure to check where it ships from – I typically filter so that only businesses in the UK are shown.

phd chemistry gifts

Here are a few of the potential gifts for a PhD student that I found in just a few minutes of browsing:

  • Atoms to Astronauts – STEM mugs and notebooks
  • Science Scribbles – Enamel pins and stickers
  • My Mini Laboratory – Microscope keyrings and virus planters
  • Chemistree Crafts – Wide selection of scientific jewellery, including conical flask earrings
  • Bakerology – Science themed cookie cutters – who wouldn’t want to eat a neuron shaped cookie?!

Charitable Donations

Q: What do you get for the person who has everything?

A: A gift for someone else!

It can be hard to know what to get someone when they say there’s nothing that they want, but if your giftee would truly prefer to not receive a gift then make a charitable donation on their behalf.

Choose a charity or cause which is close to their heart and you’ll have a meaningful gift which provides benefit to others as well.

Top Tips on Buying Gifts for a PhD Student

  • If your PhD student is short on space stick to gifting an experience or a consumable item
  • Everyone needs to eat, so food gifts can be a great safe choice for PhD students
  • Feeling stuck for what to buy? Ask! Some people enjoy surprises and others will prefer to set strict guidelines for present buying. I’m very frank and honest with my own family now around receiving gifts as I’m fairly minimalist and don’t like receiving anything I won’t use.
  • Short on money? Why not make something homemade. Cupcakes in particular can be a quick and easy gift and are always sure to go down well.

Do you have any other suggestions for gifts for a PhD student or graduate? Are there any gifts you received during your own PhD which you really valued? Let me know in the comments!

The Best Gifts for PhD Students [PhD Graduation Gifts 2023]

A Ph.D. is the highest academic degree a person can achieve Completing it takes a lot of hard work, persistence, and hustle. The thing is that people who graduate with a Ph.D. often feel a sense of incompleteness when they graduate.

I know I did! I felt like finishing my PhD was a bit of an anticlimactic experience.

So, spending a bit of time celebrating with a recent PhD graduate will help them feel a sense of completion and mark the end of something really worthwhile.

If you are shopping for a great gift for a Ph.D. graduate yet unsure what to get, read on. What are the best gifts for Ph.D. students’ graduation? Is it something reusable?

This article discusses the best gifts you can get for a Ph.D. graduate. We also discuss some common questions about gifts for Ph.D. graduates, such as budget and more gift ideas.

10 Best Graduation Gifts for a PhD student

Here are some of the best PhD student gifts you can buy someone who is currently studying for their PhD or has graduated. We look beyond the typical headphones, mugs, and other gifts you may get recommended on other blogs.

These recommendations come from my experience with graduating with my PhD myself and what I would have loved to receive.

A new experience – the best PhD graduation gifts EVER!

When someone graduates with a PhD the best gift you can give someone is the opportunity to experience something new.

It is a great way to refresh your life, do something fun and create memories with loved ones.

Personally, it is my go-to option for any life milestone. I once read that, often, people prefer experiences rather than “things” once they get older.

There are a number of great vouchers for new experiences and some of my favorites include:

  • Virgin Experience Gifts : Offers a range of handpicked experiences with flexible policies and no expiration dates. They offer 30-day returns or free exchanges for any other experience in their marketplace.
  • Experience Gifts : Offers a wide variety of experiences, including airborne activities such as hot air balloon rides, flying lessons, and paragliding, as well as driving experiences.
  • Gifting Owl : Provides over 12,000 global experiences with a 3-year validity. Gift vouchers are exchangeable, and they offer instant gift delivery. Some of their top experiences include a private photoshoot at Universal CityWalk Hollywood, a Hollywood Sign Hike with panoramic views, and a Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Hollywood.

Consider a new experience first before a gift like those listed below! Memories last a lifetime and are often more meaningful than anything else you can give someone.

Academic Gifts for a PhD graduate – business card holders and more

These gifts are perfect for people who are entering another research-related work environment after their PhD.

It could be in industry or in another academic position like a PostDoc or Research Fellow role. Here are some things that make academia for academics and scientists much better:

Logitech Spotlight Presentation Clicker

The Logitech Spotlight is not your usual presentation clicker; it does more than switch slides and laser-pointing.

With the Logitech Spotlight, you can highlight and magnify your screen, drawing better attention to your slides. It also comes with a cursor control system, allowing you to control your cursor just like a mouse.

Why A Ph.D. Graduate Will Like This: A Ph.D. graduate will often enter academia or work in the industry after graduation. This means they may be presenting a lot of presentations or lectures. A great clicker like this would make their work easier.

The New Parker 51 Fountain Pen

When it comes to pens, many will immediately think of Parker. The New Parker 51 is a modern redesign of the original 1941 model, dubbed the ‘World’s Most Wanted Pen.’

The pen has a streamlined silhouette, and the cap is stainless steel with palladium finish trims. The pen clip is in the signature Parker arrow shape.

Silly PhD completion gifts

Sometimes you just have to get something that says: “I’ve finished a PhD….” it big loud letters.

‘Phinished’ Ph.D. Graduation T-Shirt

This is a simple, regular T-shirt. The printing, however, is not. You get a wordplay, the words ‘finished’ and ‘Ph.D.’ put together to form the word ‘Finished.’ Perfect for a Ph.D. graduate.

The shirt comes in a wide selection of colors, including shades of blue, black, gray, and pink.

If in doubt, a gift card always works

If you are not sure about what to buy someone – I’ve found that it is always a great option to let them buy something for themselves. Sometimes the best graduation gifts for doctoral students is the ability to choose their own gift!

I’m not always a fan of buying stuff on Amazon but, as a gift card, it certainly provides one of the widest selections of products for anyone and any interest or desire!

How Much Should You Spend on Gifts for PhD Students and Graduates?

How much you should spend on a Ph.D. gift can depend largely on your relationship with the graduate and your personal budget. As a guideline:

  • Close family members and partners : You may consider spending between $100 – $200 on a gift. This could cover the cost of higher-end gifts like quality headphones, an Airbnb gift card, or a pricier piece from Minted.com.
  • Friends or extended relatives : A budget of $50 – $100 would be appropriate. This could include items like quality water bottles, books, or a lower-cost subscription box.
  • Colleagues or acquaintances : Around $20 – $50 might be suitable. This could afford a well-chosen book, a smaller decor item, or contribute towards a group gift.
Remember, it’s not about the price tag – thoughtful, personalized gifts often mean the most, regardless of cost.

by Bernard Abog 8 min read

The internet is overflowing with biology-specific gifts, but we've scoured our sources to find the most popular and high-quality gifts for biologists that will definitely win a smile.

I hope this gift guide helps you finish your shopping faster than ever. Show them you understand their passion for biology and relish the moment when they geek out over your perfect gift.

This list is a compilation of our favorites from around the internet. Some are our own Genius Lab Gear inventions and some we’re just jealous we didn’t think of first! Some external links in this page are from affiliates, which means that any purchase of the items after clicking the link will result in a small monetary referral fee paid back to Genius Lab Gear at no cost to you. We appreciate your support which allows us to continue inventing and testing the best tools for scientists on the planet!

1. Microbiology Word Magnets

Biology-themed gifts are rarely as entertaining and enduring as our   science-themed word magnet sets ! We recently launched these to encourage creativity and self-expression in labs, classrooms and offices. Each specialty pack comes with 144 tiles carefully designed by a PhD in that field for technical accuracy and tacit absurdity. So far, we have sets for   Biology ,   Medicine ,  Chemistry ,   Physics ,   Engineering ,   Mathematics ,   Academia ,   Microbiology ,   Neuroscience ,   Ecology ,   P hD Balance (mental health in grad school)   and   Basic Science . Most people grab a 2, 3, or 4-pack that represents their unique experience in STEM. I would suggest the Science Basics, Biology and Ecology packs for a Biologist, and add an Academia pack if they are a professor or graduate student.

2. rOtring or Staedtler Mechanical Pencil

Mechanical pencils are considered a daily essential for biologists. They let you precisely draw diagrams for homework or professional work with the option to make fine adjustments with the eraser. In the new digital age, mechanical pencils are still required but biologists often find themselves using touch screens as well.

That’s why my new favorite is the   rOtring 800 Retractable Mechanical Pencil, (0.5 mm) . This one turns from a pencil to a stylus on the fly, and also ensures the tip isn’t poking holes in your pocket all day like most other models. This is truly the top-end mechanical pencil and will make a special gift.

Staedtler is another brand much-loved by biologists.   This model   is cheaper and will last a long time, but just isn’t convertible to a stylus. You can’t go wrong with either one.

3. Pocket Microscope with Aspheric Lens System

Biologists often use microscopes to study the smallest units of life that cannot be seen by the naked eye. But being in the field collecting samples to study means they don’t have access to a regular microscope. The solution? A pocket microscope !

It’s a fully functional mini-microscope that may be carried around with you at all times. It's designed to be lightweight and portable. The magnification can even reach up to 120x! This is the perfect gift to help a biologist explore the wonderful unseen world around them in great detail.

Say hello to Photosynthesis by Blue Orange Games -- an award-winning strategy board game that makes an ideal gift for a biologist who’s into trees, botany and strategic board games. As a biologist, their work revolves around the living organisms on Earth. This entertaining game challenges them to survive the life-cycle of a tree by taking care of them from seedling to full bloom to rebirth.

7. Geometric Terrarium Container

This geometric terrarium container is a wonderful gift for a biology nerd. It’s simple and adaptable. It adds a fashionable touch of life to their workspace and makes it more poetic and peaceful. Succulents, air plants, tiny plants, fern, cactus, moss, air plants, and other decorative objects work well in this container and will look like a mini garden!

8. Lab Coat Pocket Protector

From organizing their precision tools to adding a touch of style to their lab coats, this accessory will be appreciated and put to good use by any biologist. The venerable Pocket Protector became a cultural icon in the 1960's and 1970's, but somewhere along the way the newer generation of STEM researchers forgot about them. Biologists need these back in their labs to stay organized, stay efficient, protect their work clothes, and finish their experiments without being late to lunch. So we researched and tested every type ever made to methodically solve each problem and come up with this refreshed design . Available in spruce green, sapphire blue, and faded pink - the top 3 colors voted on by our fans! You can even get it from our Amazon page if that's easier.

Nick Lane, an award-winning author and biochemist, sets out to answer questions and ideas about life’s emergence and evolution in his book called “ The Vital Question: Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life ”. “Why are we as we are?” “Why are we here at all?” “Why did complex life like animals and plants arise from a single ancestor only once in the history of our planet?” “Why two sexes and not three or four or 12?” All the answers can be found in this enthralling book. Honey locust, persimmon, osage orange, and bitter melon were introduced by now-extinct species such as Mammoths, giant sloths, camels, and local horses 15,000 years ago. Anyone who enjoys a stroll in the woods or even down a city sidewalk will find this book an enriching experience.

Graduation Gifts for Pharmacy Students Guide

A friend or loved one is graduating from pharmacy school soon and you have no idea what to get them.

Below you’ll find some tips, advice and ideas for graduation gifts that will be appreciated by the new pharmacist.

Know your pharmacist

Unless you’re putting a gift card in a card holder and handing it over, buying the perfect pharma grad gift is about knowing who the person is and what they like. When choosing graduation gifts, though, knowing their career path and job type can help you get a grad gift that is spot-on. Below are a few examples.

  • Clinical pharmacists work in hospitals or medical centers. Graduation gift ideas for them include a set of high-quality medical scrubs.
  • Pharmacists working in science labs to discover new drugs deal with huge challenges – like finding a substance to facilitate the body’s fight against cancer. Gift ideas that ease their mind, inject some laughter/fun or get their brain thinking in new ways could be helpful.
  • Retail pharmacists work in drugstores, preparing medications for patients to pick up. Think about how cold it is in these places or how they are on their feet all day. A quality pair of shoes or a jacket could be a hit.

Now that you have some background information about the graduate’s career and job, we can get into different gift ideas that pharm professionals tend to love.

Reference books are great graduation gifts for pharmacy students because their new job will require that they keep track of an overwhelming amount of information on various topics. Get them a small reference handbook or flashcards that can easily fit into their pocket.

New pharma grads don’t always know what to expect, so books that give them advice, tips or anecdotal stories about day-to-day expectations in their pharmacist life will be appreciated.

Try to pick a book based on their personality.

Apparel and knick knacks

Don’t kid yourself into thinking the graduating student does not think that a bit of pharmacist humor with prescription coffee mugs or novelty pill bottles are hilarious – they do. There are plenty of pharmacist t-shirts, ties, jewelry for men and women and hoodies that have RX quotes, sayings and images they’ll love – beaker shot glasses being a standout option.

Be careful, however. Although some people may love a shirt that says “legal drug dealer”, it may not be for everyone, but if you know a grad that will love it, get it!

Gifts for work

Practical gifts are amazing for a pharmacist graduation gift when you realize just how many pens they go through!

Gift ideas in this area are highlighters, pens, clipboards, counting trays and spatulas all are going to be greatly appreciated.

Celebrate PharmD Grads!

Critical Course

The ♦ course is considered critical.

In alignment with the Degree Map Guidance for Indiana’s Public Colleges and Universities, published by the Commission for Higher Education (pursuant to HEA 1348-2013), a Critical Course is identified as “one that a student must be able to pass to persist and succeed in a particular major. Students who want to be nurses, for example, should know that they are expected to be proficient in courses like biology in order to be successful. These would be identified by the institutions for each degree program.”

The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Consultation with an advisor may result in an altered plan customized for an individual student. The myPurduePlan powered by DegreeWorks is the knowledge source for specific requirements and completion.

Colts OTAs: Defense wins the day; Jaylon Jones takes early lead in CB battle

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Jaylon Jones (40) smiles while laughing with another teammate Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, during training camp at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

INDIANAPOLIS — Anthony Richardson threw his hands up in the air in exasperation. He was standing too far away to hear exactly what he was saying, but his body language spoke volumes.

The Indianapolis Colts quarterback was frustrated during Thursday’s OTAs, and he let a nearby official hear about it. Richardson had uncorked a deep ball down the sideline to Alec Pierce during a seven-on-seven drill, but Pierce couldn’t bring it in thanks to stifling coverage by free safety Nick Cross . When the ball hit the ground, the defense celebrated while Richardson implored a practice official to throw a flag.

That play was a microcosm of an up-and-down day for the offense, which produced a few good moments but never got humming through the air. Following another defensive stop, cornerback Dallis Flowers kept screaming, “That’s y’all problem!” toward the offense, leaving no doubt who was winning the day. There were even a few times in seven-on-seven when the defense recorded a “sack” (players can’t actually tackle) because the coverage was so good that Richardson couldn’t get a pass off.

Colts mailbag: How has Anthony Richardson's processing evolved entering Year 2?

In 11-on-11 drills, Richardson finished 4-of-5 passing, with checkdowns to running backs Evan Hull and Trey Sermon . Richardson also completed first-down throws to second-year tight end Will Mallory and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell , who burned the Colts’ secondary on a crosser.

Mitchell continues to flash his potential and made arguably the play of the day during a seven-on-seven period. Richardson launched a deep ball down the sideline to Mitchell, who, after beating cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. , contorted his body to make an over-the-shoulder grab that drew a roar of approval from the offense. That highlight-reel play explains why the Colts were willing to take a swing on Mitchell despite just one year of big-time production from him in college.

“He’s been making a ton of plays out here the past couple of days,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said, noting Mitchell’s explosiveness. “Really good to see those one-on-one winners. He’s going to bring an element to our offense that we’re really excited about.”

Mitchell totaled 55 catches for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns last year at Texas. He ranked No. 1 among wide receivers in this year’s draft class with 81.8 percent of his catches resulting in a first down or touchdown.

“If I ain’t explosive, they’re gonna find somebody who is,” Mitchell said during rookie minicamp. “So, just trying to maximize every opportunity I get. But really just staying prepared so I can maximize every opportunity.”

Jaylon Jones leads early CB battle

It’s no secret the Colts have at least one starting cornerback position up for grabs , and throughout OTAs, Jones appears to have the early lead over Flowers, who is back practicing after tearing his right Achilles last year. Jones took most of the starting reps Thursday alongside veteran Kenny Moore II and 2023 second-round pick JuJu Brents . He broke up at least one pass down the sideline from Richardson during team drills.

Jones started 10 games last season after being drafted in the seventh round. Opposing QBs completed just 56.5 percent of their passes when targeting him, but he still gave up five touchdowns, according to Pro Football Reference. Jones claimed he gained invaluable experience in 2023 that will help him raise his level of play in 2024.

“(I’m) just coming in, seeing different things so I can play faster,” Jones said.

Jones has high expectations for himself in his second season, and the 22-year-old is well aware of how important this summer could be toward cementing his role on defense.

“Most definitely,” Jones said when asked if he thinks he can become a full-time starter. “Just keep working. Put my head down and work and let the chips fall where they may.”

Drew Ogletree speaks

Ogletree spoke to the media for the first time since being removed from the commissioner’s exempt list and resuming team activities. He was added to the list following a December arrest for two charges of alleged domestic violence. Both charges were dismissed “with prejudice” in March, meaning the decision is permanent and can’t be revisited in court.

“I’ve put everything behind me. I’ve got past it,” Ogletree said. “I’m just trying to focus on this year now.”

Ogletree declined to comment further on the incident but did say his teammates “most definitely” welcomed him back.

The 25-year-old is heading into his third season with the Colts. He missed his entire rookie campaign in 2022 with a torn ACL and finally made his NFL debut last year. Ogletree started nine of the 12 games he appeared in, finishing with nine catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He’ll compete for an increased role in a crowded tight end room that still lacks a true No. 1 option.

Ogletree said he looks forward to playing more with Richardson, whose physical gifts will allow him to keep plays alive longer than most QBs.

“Having a mobile quarterback like that, he can definitely scramble the pocket and get out of there and extend plays,” Ogletree said. “So for us, being able to practice here in OTAs off scramble drills … just getting that chemistry with him, getting it locked down, I think it’s gonna be great.”

Absences/injuries

Running back Jonathan Taylor and defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo missed Thursday’s practice. Steichen said Taylor was out for “some personal stuff” and would be back next week for veteran minicamp; Odeyingbo attended a wedding.

Right tackle Braden Smith (knee surgery), wide receiver Ashton Dulin (ACL), cornerback Chris Lammons (left foot/ankle) and tight end Mo Alie-Cox (undisclosed) were in attendance but did not participate. Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. was sidelined as well after banging his knee last week in a collision with Jones.

“He’s in a good spot,” Steichen said of Pittman. “We’re just resting him. Could he go out there and practice right now? Yeah, probably. We’re just going to be smart with him, though.”
