Most Detailed 3D Reconstruction of Human Brain Tissue Ever Produced Yields Surprising Insights

The NIH Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® (BRAIN) Initiative has expanded scientists’ understanding of the human brain in recent years, offering fascinating insights into the ways that individual cells and complex neural circuits interact dynamically to enable us to think, feel, and act. But neuroscientists still have much more to learn about how our brains are put together at the most fundamental, subcellular level.   As a step in that direction, in a new study supported in part by the NIH BRAIN Initiative and reported in the journal Science, researchers have created the most detailed nanoscale resolution map ever produced of a cubic millimeter of brain tissue, about the size of half a grain of rice.

The O3 guidelines: open data, open code, and open infrastructure for sustainable curated scientific resources

Curated resources that support scientific research often go out of date or become inaccessible. This can happen for several reasons including lack of continuing funding, the departure of key personnel, or changes in institutional priorities. We introduce the Open Data, Open Code, Open Infrastructure (O3) Guidelines as an actionable road map to creating and maintaining resources that are less susceptible to such external factors and can continue to be used and maintained by the community that they serve.

May 27, 2024 | Prices, Marketing, and Trade

Average gasoline and diesel prices in the u.s. 2022-2024.

The average price for regular gasoline in the United States stood at 3.62 U.S. dollars per gallon on May 13, 2024. This compared to a diesel price of 3.93 U.S. dollars per gallon. Prices decreased slightly in the second week of May, which is also reflected in crude oil benchmarks .

When looking at the real price of gasoline over time, U.S. drivers had to pay notably more in the years between 2011 and 2014. The surge in prices noted throughout 2022 and partly for 2023, which followed supply constraints, was still lower in terms of real U.S. dollars.

The U.S. has some of the lowest conventional motor fuel prices in the world. Although fuel prices are usually higher in high-income countries, the U.S. profits from its position as the world’s largest crude oil producer and can keep retail prices for oil products comparatively low. For example, among high-income countries, prices for automotive premium gasoline (RON 95) were only lower in Russia and Saudi Arabia - countries where crude oil and oil product exports are in part restricted by sanctions, thus keeping domestic supply high.

Global brand value of barbie from 2015 to 2024.

In 2024, the Barbie brand was valued at approximately 720 million U.S. dollars. The brand's value saw a noticeable uptick following the success of the Barbie movie. Barbie is a well-known toy doll invented by Ruth Handler and manufactured by American toy company Mattel.

Although the Barbie doll has existed for several decades, all eyes had been on the brand even more since the announcement of the Barbie movie, featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Zoomers and millennials in the United States were especially aware of the existence of the film. When asked in late July 2023, whether or not they intended to go see the movie, the majority said no; however, a considerable share of moviegoers in the United States had  planned to watch “Barbie” in theaters .

Mattel, which is responsible for a number of toy brands, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Fisher-Price, is one of the world’s largest toy companies. In 2023, the company generated close to five and a half billion U.S. dollars in revenue , which is a noticeable increase compared to the figures recorded between 2018 and 2020. Just over half of Mattel’s revenue was generated through its North America segment .

New Database by IGS Researchers Reveals Inequities in Exposure to Energy Infrastructure

  • Alison Gold Communications and Events Specialist, IGS

A team of IGS and School of Public Health researchers are uncovering energy exposure hotspots and setting the stage for a more just energy transition.

While a doctor may wish to prescribe a patient cleaner air or water, they cannot. Public policy and historical inequities largely influence a person’s exposure to the structural and environmental factors that affect their health. Preliminary analyses from a new database at Boston University indicate that 91% of United States census tracts are within a health-relevant distance of a piece of energy infrastructure, much of it fossil fuel-based, and that energy infrastructure is more densely concentrated in majority non-white census tracts.

Researchers at Boston University’s Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) developed the database to equip policymakers, academics, community groups, and environmental justice organizations with information to understand who is most burdened by fossil fuel hazards and to advance equitable policies that minimize harmful exposures. Currently, the team is working to map existing energy infrastructure and the populations who live nearby across the United States. They ultimately intend to link this repository to data about population-level health outcomes, and make the tool freely available online through the Harvard Dataverse Repository.

Group photo at Power & People Symposium

Co-Principal Investigators Jonathan Buonocore and Mary Willis , both of whom are core faculty at IGS and assistant professors at the Boston University School of Public Health (BU SPH), unveiled the Energy Infrastructure Exposure Intensity and Equity Indices (EI3) Database at the May 7 Power & People Symposium hosted at BU. Their work was funded through IGS’s year-long Sustainability Research Grant, in partnership with SPH, to advance research at the nexus of sustainability, health, and equity.

“In my experience, the most compelling thing, the thing that cuts through the noise more quickly and sharply than anything, is data,” said Matthew Tejada, senior vice president of Environmental Health at the Natural Resources Defense Council, in his keynote address at the symposium.

“We are in the beginning stages of a revolution, in our country and globally, in terms of how we make energy, where we make energy, how we use that energy,” Tejada said. “The fact that we’re just now getting in touch with our legacy energy system and the impact it has had on communities over time to today is incredibly important because that sort of data can cut through the noise. It can help communities understand where they are and where they might be going. And it allows advocates, decision-makers, and academicians to engage in a conversation grounded in the realities that communities are experiencing.”

Power lines carry electricity overhead, freight transports biomass cross country, power plants are embedded where people live and work, and oil storage tanks, extraction wells, refineries, and pipelines are hidden in plain sight. These structures keep lights on, buildings functional, and cars running, but researchers are still learning how they impact surrounding neighborhoods.

Map of energy infrastructure across the United States

Many research teams have examined the relationships between particular pieces of energy infrastructure and discrete health outcomes, like the effects of natural gas flaring on asthma, oil extraction on preterm births, or power plants on mortality. A study published last year by Buonocore and colleagues found that regional air pollution from oil and gas production causes approximately 7,500 deaths and $77 billion in health impacts in the United States annually.

By examining just one exposure at a time, these studies reveal only part of the story. Communities often face several hazards simultaneously, which can cause overlapping health effects undetected by traditional, targeted studies.

“One thing that is so powerful about [the EI3] dataset is that it really makes the connection between energy policy and public health policy. They are intertwined and they have profound impacts on each other,” said Andee Krasner, a volunteer at Mothers Out Front and a panelist at the symposium. “Energy policy touches every part of public health, from chronic disease to reproductive health to vector-borne diseases to pediatric health to emergency management.”

A powerful tool to promote environmental justice

Buonocore and Willis began work on the database after identifying gaps in the existing literature on the connection between energy, equity, and health. While the information underlying the database is public, it is scattered between multiple agencies and jurisdictions. Additionally, cross-state comparisons are challenging, as states are often subject to different rules for reporting. The EI3 Database represents the first time anyone has compiled all of this varied data into a harmonized national tool.

“We wanted to gain a fuller understanding of the health and environmental justice impacts of full energy systems, rather than just focusing piecemeal on different pieces of the energy infrastructure,” Buonocore said. “And we wanted to expand the focus of health research to all components of the supply chain, not just focusing on the power plants and the wells, but looking at the full system. And third, we wanted to be able to compare the health and environmental justice implications across different energy types.”

The EI3 Database assesses hazards throughout the supply chain, including extraction, processing, storage, transmission, and distribution.

A student displays their poster at the symposium

“Energy infrastructure is a highly common exposure in the United States, yet is not necessarily one we are always thinking about, especially in the population health world,” Willis said. “Persistently marginalized populations are disproportionately burdened with this industry, which aligns with what we know from other pieces of research.”

Early results from the database confirm that energy infrastructure is much more densely concentrated in majority non-white census tracts.

“As director of the Fifth National Climate Assessment, I understand the value of data sets and tools like the one being presented today to address these complex challenges at the intersection of climate change, energy infrastructure, human health, and environmental justice,”  said Allison Crimmins, director of National Climate Assessment at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, at the symposium. “For a long time, these variables have been siloed into their own fields or data sets or reports.”

Broad applicability across industries and sectors

Nearly 150 individuals from more than 20 local and national organizations registered to attend the symposium and learn about the EI3 Database, demonstrating the tool’s versatility. Attendees and speakers joined from government agencies including the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the United States Department of Energy, nonprofits such as Environmental Defense Fund, HEET, and Sierra Club, and advocacy groups like Greenroots and Mothers Out Front.

Researchers from across BU contributed to the project’s development, including IGS Associate Directors Emily Ryan , an a ssociate professor in the College of Engineering, and Henrik Selin , associate dean for studies and professor of international relations in the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies.

In academia, the EI3 Database opens the door for an infinite number of potential research projects. It could be applied to uncover fundamental learnings about how many people live near pieces of energy infrastructure, to what extent persistently marginalized groups are disproportionately affected, and what levels of key pollutants are emerging from understudied pieces of infrastructure. Meanwhile, community advocates and environmental justice organizations may use the data to understand which communities should be prioritized for renewable energy infrastructure. For policymakers, the EI3 Database may help determine where future climate infrastructure should be sited. This work all serves to establish a fair and just transition to a clean energy future.

“I’m really excited and inspired by researchers like you, who are focused on health exposures from energy infrastructure, who are breaking those silos and telling a more nuanced, complex story, one that really captures the real-life interactions between people and the planet, the real-life consequences of our choices,” Crimmins said. “I don’t think we can truly solve the climate crisis or address the legacies of injustice in this country if we don’t examine those interactions, if we don’t have the data to examine those interactions, and to inform policy decisions around achieving a just energy transition.”

Research progress on two-dimensional indium selenide crystals and optoelectronic devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, with unique electronic properties, superior optoelectronic properties, and dangling-bond-free surfaces, have attracted significant attention and experienced rapid development both in fundamental science and for practical applications. Amid the plethora of 2D materials, indium selenide (InSe) has emerged as a promising candidate for future high-mobility optoelectronic devices. Nobel Prize laureate Andre Geim even describes it as "the 'golden middle' between silicon and graphene". Over the past decade, remarkable findings and progress have been made in the fabrication of 2D InSe crystals and their application in devices, motivating us to delve deeply into these forefront developments. In this review, the physical properties such as the crystalline structure, band structure and photoluminescence characteristics are discussed at first. Then, the advancement in terms of synthesis techniques, characteristics and synthesis schemes in the fabrication of 2D InSe are summarized. Subsequently, the mechanisms of optimized strategy and recent progress in field effect transistors (FETs) as well as photodetectors based on this material are summarized, also highlighting the promising applications of 2D InSe in sensors. Finally, an outlook, challenges, and potential future research directions in the fabrication of 2D InSe and its devices are presented.

The large, heavy passenger vehicles were responsible for over 20% of the growth in global energy-related CO2 emissions last year

SUVs accounted for 48% of global car sales in 2023, reaching a new record and further strengthening the defining automobile trend of the early 21 st century – the shift towards ever larger and heavier cars. There are various driving forces behind this trend, from the appeal of SUVs as a status symbol and their potential enhancements in comfort, to the marketing strategies of leading automakers.

New car registrations by size and powertrain, 2010-2023

In advanced economies, SUV sales reached around 20 million last year, surpassing a market share of 50% for the first time. This preference for larger vehicles extends to emerging and developing economies, too, where the share of SUVs in total car sales mirrors this trend. Today, more than one in four cars on the road worldwide are SUVs, the majority of which are conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. While only 5% of SUVs currently on the road are electric, they account for a growing share of electric car sales. In 2023, more than 55% of new electric car registrations were SUVs.

If SUVs were a country, they would be the world’s fifth largest emitter of CO2

SUVs weigh 200-300 kg more than an average medium-sized car, and typically take up nearly 0.3 m 2 more space – emitting roughly 20% more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. The trend towards heavier and less fuel-efficient cars increases energy demand, including oil and electricity use, as well as demand for basic metals and critical minerals needed for battery production. Over the course of 2022 and 2023, global oil consumption directly related to SUVs rose by a total of over 600 000 barrels per day, accounting for more than a quarter of the overall annual growth in oil demand.

Combustion-related CO2 emissions from SUVs and the 10 highest-emitting countries, 2023

In 2023, there were more than 360 million SUVs on the roads worldwide, resulting in combustion-related CO 2 emissions of 1 billion tonnes, an increase of around 100 million tonnes from the previous year. This accounted for more than 20% of the growth in global energy-related CO 2 emissions last year. The annual increase in CO 2 emissions attributed to the rise of SUVs is equivalent to about half of the emissions growth stemming from the global electricity sector. Compared with smaller cars, SUVs are also associated with higher indirect emissions resulting from producing the materials used to manufacture them. If ranked among countries, the global fleet of SUVs would be the world’s fifth largest emitter of CO 2 , exceeding the emissions of Japan and various other major economies.

Global electric vehicles fleet and sales of SUVs, 2023

Around 30 million SUVs with internal combustion engines were added to the global fleet in 2023, comparable to the total number of electric cars on the roads today. In 2023, there were 500 electric car models available worldwide, of which 60% fell under the SUV category, marking a significant increase from previous years. This trend is further reinforced as automakers plan to introduce a greater number of electrified SUV models in the near future.

Globally, SUVs now account for approximately 45% of the electric car fleet, a share that would be even higher were it not for the strong growth of small electric cars in urban areas in China. In advanced economies, the share of SUVs among electric cars is even higher at 55%. This is due to limited availability of smaller and more affordable compact models.

Despite advances in fuel efficiency and electrification, the trend toward heavier and less efficient vehicles such as SUVs, which emit roughly 20% more emissions than an average medium-sized car, has largely nullified the improvements in energy consumption and emissions achieved elsewhere in the world’s passenger car fleet in recent decades. Larger vehicles also pose challenges related to their increased use of critical minerals, as they are equipped with larger batteries. Additionally, they raise questions around pedestrian safety in constrained urban environments due to their higher front ends. On top of this, their greater parking space requirements, approximately 10% more than for medium-sized cars, can limit the use of valuable space in dense urban areas for other purposes.

To respond to some of these challenges, countries such as France, Norway, and Ireland have either established or are exploring legislative frameworks to reign in demand for SUVs. Major cities like Paris and Lyon are implementing higher parking charges specifically targeting SUVs in urban areas.

Shifting from fossil-fuelled cars to electric vehicles is a key strategy for reaching international energy and climate goals. However, measures such as rightsizing EV battery packs, tailoring fuel efficiency standards based on car size, and investing in innovative battery technologies with enhanced performance and durability, as well as lower material demand requirements, are also essential for a sustainable future.
