Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. I am genuinely excited to see the astonishing feats that your futures hold.

A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

A good welcome speech has the following qualities: * It is sincere. * It can hold the attention of the audience. * The ideas don’t ramble. * Welcome address quotes are used. One for a short welcome speech, and 2 for a longer one. Never 3, unless the speaker is trying to be funny. * The contents are relevant to the event. * It has an impressive anecdote. * The length doesn’t exceed 5 minutes.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our media partners, sponsors, distinguished officials and our talented athletes! I welcome all of you to the sports award ceremony of this institution.

It is my privilege to have the opportunity to host this event which is celebrated to celebrate the achievements of our teams, officials and athletes. This ceremony showcases the commitment of all the members which they showed in the sports competition of December 2016 last year. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to commend the efforts of our esteemed Board members, National Sports Federation, Sports Clubs of the city and in particular the members of the National Olympic Council, who have made efforts to make this day a success, where sports have made their mark. The players who put their lives are honoured.

I would like to express my gratitude to the members of the Sangathan Samiti who fulfilled their duties, did not fail to justify their roles and faced all kinds of troubles with a smile. This ceremony would not have been possible without you. I would like to thank the athletes, volunteers, family and friends for making this sports awards ceremony such a grand success.

In the end, I would like to address the participants who did not win any award but still did well in the competition. Apart from this, I would like to say that when you wake up only in the morning and try again. I'd like to say a short line for you by Vince Lombardi.

"It is not a matter of whether you will fall or not; it is not a matter of whether you will rise after falling."

Now I would like to request our chief guest to come on stage to say some inspiring words for us.

Welcome Speech for the College Awards Ceremony

Greetings from my side to all present in the auditorium,

Honorable Chief Guest, Respected Directors, Madams, Committee Members, Dear Parents, Teachers and Students.

I am SS, your host of this award evening, and today on behalf of PQR School, I extend a warm welcome to all of you. It is a matter of honor and happiness for us where you are being rewarded as well as appreciating the hard work performed by the students of class X in the board exams.

Education is not a matter within the four walls of the classroom and our school is very fortunate to have teachers and coaches who recognize this. In fact if the building and the teacher are the two pillars of any school then all of you students are definitely the third pillar.

PQR, the school believes in motivating the students as it believes that when they are motivated they will work harder in future and surely their performance will improve. This is the reason why the High School Award Ceremony is organized every year to reward the students who make the school proud. Today we also have such scholars who have not only made the school but the entire city proud with their excellent performance. You will surely be amazed when you all come to know that our school has topped all the high schools this year in terms of results.

Therefore, today the school will award scholarships to the students on the basis of percentage marks obtained and all those students will also be motivated who worked hard but could not achieve their goals. I feel very fortunate to welcome you to this function where students are being encouraged.

So first of all welcome our esteemed guest Mr. Bhushan, who is the District Magistrate (DM) of our area, with an echo of applause. Mr. Bhushan is someone who is very much in news and discussions these days. We all know about the historical changes he has made since he took office. It is because of him that the wave of development, security, literacy is going on in the entire district.

Award Ceremony Welcome Speech

Welcome speech for school awards ceremony.

Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal and Teachers, Respected Parents and Dear Students! Welcome to the School Awards Ceremony 2016-2017.

Today, I feel very privileged and honoured to stand here in front of you all and acknowledge the achievements of our brilliant students who have made both the school and their parents proud. This program is held to recognize the young talents who have made an immense contribution to our school and the society. These brilliant students exhibit such qualities that will not only help them in achieving their goals, but also bring glory of success to our school academy. Today, we have gathered here not just to celebrate the achievements of our students, but also to give due regard to our values and morals which these awardees exemplify, like discipline, compassion and zeal for learning.

Awards are a way to encourage good behaviour and inculcate competitive spirit. This is the reason why our school organizes award ceremony every year to encourage its students. So we are here to give away the awards in mainly six categories, viz. academics, distinction in sports and arts, for participating in school exhibitions, debates and other social events. The awards to be distributed today are not just for recognizing those students who have performed exceptionally well in their academics, but also to honour those students who excelled in sports, performing arts and visual arts, including the ones who were proactive in various social events. The aim is to recognize that extra talent of our students other than academics and motivate them to shine in their respective fields.

Our institution has always provided its students with a healthy and fairly competitive environment to help them grow in every sphere of activity, be it academics, sports or any other extra-curricular role. We have given equal opportunities to all our students so that they realize their true potential and get ready to face the outer world once they complete their school studies. And I am much pleased to see our dear students performing and excelling in their respective areas of interests.

Also, I would like to address those students who have not won any prize and say that do not lose hope as this is not the end of everything and there will be many more opportunities coming your way to prove your mettle. School award ceremonies are just a beginning. I have a very inspiring line for all of you said by George W. Bush, the former president of the United States:

“To those of you who received honours, awards and distinctions, I say well done. And to the C students, I say, you too, can be president of the United States.”

In the end, I would like to use this wonderful opportunity to thank our Principal, Vice Principal and the board members for taking this institution to new heights and creating a distinct path for the students to follow. I would also like to extend special thanks to all the parents for joining us and making this occasion a huge success.

Welcome Speech for Academic Awards Ceremony

A very Good Morning to our school committee members, honourable judges, staff, parents and dear students! I feel really honoured in sharing with you the achievements of our brilliant young students. This is an occasion of joy for all of us as we have come together for celebrating this auspicious day. This goes without saying that the award ceremony is amongst my most treasured occasions of the school as it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the preceding year, address the whole community and share the achievements, success and plans of our school for the days to come.

Our school truly believes that good education plays a crucial role in building a bright future for our children. Therefore, here we are committed to providing an atmosphere to our students where they all can imbibe good values and learn new things every day. I am extremely glad at the fact that our school committee members as well as teachers are leaving no stone unturned in working towards this direction. On this important occasion, we get a chance to publically celebrate this success achieved through the sheer hard work and perseverance of both our students as well as teachers.

Our students have not only excelled in academics but are also very good at the extra-curricular activities like sports, drama, artworks, organizing school events and many other things. They have not only made us proud, but brought accolades to our school and have given it a nation-wide recognition, thus adding extra feather to its cap. Students like you are responsible for the continuous growth and development of our school in combined efforts with the extremely proficient council members as well as our teachers.

Our school has constantly received attention from media, and has well-hosted the visits of the renowned personalities from the well-known institutions, national as well as overseas. Most of the visitors have even returned to pay multiple visits to our school for closely observing our students and supporting the faculty members. Luckily, feedback received from the visiting faculties has always been positive. This certainly wouldn’t have been possible without our committed staff members and capable students of this school.

I express my heartiest gratitude to the principal, teachers and parents for their support and collective efforts towards the development of these young talents, grooming them to achieve something substantial in life and above all, raising them with a benign attitude. Whatever our students have achieved so far would never have been possible without your constant endeavor.

I am extremely pleased to announce that the contribution of each and everyone present here has borne fruit. So I thank you all for having come together and adding more grace to this ceremony.

At last, I am going to recite a few lines.

“Succeeding in life is as simple as being a good student. All you have to do is pay attention, work hard and give it a best shot.”

Thank you very much!

Welcome Speech for Sports Award Ceremony

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen, our media partners, sponsors, respected officials and our very talented athletes! I heartily welcome you all to the sports award ceremony of this institution.

It gives me immense pleasure to host this ceremony that has been observed to commemorate the achievements of our teams, officials and athletes. This event truly showcases the commitment that all the members have shown towards the sports competition held last year in December 2016. The preceding year was indeed a very busy year for all of us as we had worked really hard to get through this competition. Our young athletes participated in all the four major games, namely table tennis, karate, cycling and indoor football and emerged with flying colours. You people have made us extremely proud.

Today, we are here to announce the lucky winners of the 12 main awards and also for applauding the victory of our commendable award recipients. A huge congratulations to all the finalists, you have definitely set a very admiring benchmark for other sports persons of this institution to imitate. We hope that you will continue to achieve brilliance in your respective sports career and in other spheres too.

Babe Ruth has rightly said, “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” Our football team has proved that a game can only be victorious when the players are well-coordinated and are imbued with a true team spirit. Due to such great efforts in league, the team has brought home second prize in the event organized in Pune at the national level and made our institution extremely proud.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of our esteemed board members, National Sports Association, city’s sports club and specially the National Olympic Council team members for making this day special for all those who have the nerve to achieve something in their lives.

I would also like to express my gratitude towards the organizing committee members who have fulfilled their duties quite well; did not fail to justify their roles and took all the loads of work with a smile. This event would have not been possible without you. I also want to thank all the athletes, volunteers, family and friends for making this sports award ceremony happen at such a grand level.

In the end, I would like to address those participants who even though have not won any of the awards but still put up a great show in the competition. Also, I would like to add by saying that it’s never too late to start over and try again. I have a short line for you delivered by Vince Lombardi.

“It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.”

Now I want to request our chief guest to come on stage to say a few inspiring words.

Well…Education is much more than what happens within the four walls of the classroom and the school is very fortunate to have such teachers, trainers and instructors who recognise the same. In fact, if the building and teachers are the two pillars of any school, then all you students certainly are the third pillar.

PQR School believes in encouraging the students, for it believes that when they are motivated they tend to work harder in future and certainly their performances get better. So, today the school will honour the students with different slabs of scholarships based on the grounds of the percentages achieved by each of them and will also motivate all the students who worked very hard but couldn’t hit their targets. I am privileged today to welcome everyone to this ceremony of appreciating the talent of worthy students.

The welcome speech template

To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

The 6 standard welcome speech content ingredients

A woman with a cookbook reading a welcome speech recipe. Plus, a list of ingredients.

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

  • Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
  • Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
  • An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
  • Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
  • An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
  • Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Short sample welcome speech for a conference

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. However, there are others with a similar mission: 10 Inspiring Organizations that Promote Literacy and Education .)

Example welcome speech - "Readers by Right"

"Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Quote extract: We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential.

Parents United is committed to actively raising the quality of life for every child. We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential. Our task is to make it possible. Our mission is to provide practical, step by step assistance.

This year our theme is literacy. We've named the day 'Readers by Right'.

Thanks to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are aware of 'rights' in many spheres, including education.  Article 26 declared it should be compulsory and free for children.

That goal is as pertinent today as it was then. And it's a goal I know we all share - the full development of every child. As a body, Parents United recognizes good reading skills established in childhood as the foundation of fulfilling, and ongoing education.

Quote extract: Jim and Jane bring their passion and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed.

We are honored to have Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith and Jane Brown with us today. All three are esteemed specialists in teaching young children to read.

Sue-Ellen has worked for a long time with educational authorities to establish programs putting in place necessary pre-reading skills. Her hard work needs no introduction. The results speak for themselves.

Jim and Jane bring their passion, and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed. Their work among disadvantaged English-as-a-second-language families has bridged gaps that were deep dark chasms.

Prepare yourself to be challenged, excited and inspired.

And before I handover to Lesley Watts, our coordinator for 'Readers by Right', who will outline the day's various events, I want to say once more on behalf of the Parents United organizing committee, welcome. It's wonderful to see so many of you here."

Get your welcome speech started

To shortcut wondering, "Should I say this?" or "Maybe I should say that?" and "Then again there's also ...", I have a very simple solution for you.

Get yourself a printable welcome speech planner

Illustration of an audience listening intently with text overlay saying: Click to download a welcome speech planner

Download and print my  special greeting address planner .

It covers ALL the necessary ingredients that go into preparing a successful welcome speech. It's simple to use and easily filled out. Once it's done, writing your speech will be a lot less hassle as you'll have the core content ready to work with.

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

  • ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
  • double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .)

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

Get a hand with vocabulary

If you're stuck for words, here's a large selection of  adaptable welcoming phrases with example s entences.  Reading through them could help you to find exactly what you want.

What does a good welcome speech do?

Audience members listening intently.

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

  • signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
  • sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate.  However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful.  Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.
  • unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

Getting the tone right for an event

What is tone.

Tone is the combined impact of the words chosen to express something, with how they are structured and, delivered.  All three elements come together to create tone * .

Get tone wrong, and your welcome speech is a disaster.

Get it right, and it's a triumph!

(Yes, that's hyperbole but I'm sure you get the idea. ☺)

* Tone - a mood, quality or feeling

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

Infographic illustrating the principal differences between formal and informal language to create tone

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together.  It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated."

What is appropriate? What is expected?  Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

23 Award Speech: And the Winner is…

An award trophy

People in leadership have the privilege of recognizing the achievement of others by giving them awards.  This is an important moment, and you want to help make it special. In this chapter, I will teach you the five-step process on how to give an award, I will share with you practical things to think about in terms of setup and execution, and finally, I will share with you ways to elevate this speech to a professional level.

Ceremonial Speaking Wheel

welcome speech in english for award ceremony

All ceremonial speeches should include the trio –narration, magnification, and identification.

Identification

You are not talking to an audience; you are sharing with an audience. You are celebrating with them and collectively celebrating shared values and shared appreciation for their accomplishments. Saying “we” are here to honor the recipient and reminding the audience of shared values helps the audience to be a part of the process.

The use of story helps the audience to be drawn in and want to listen. The narration can be about the organization, how the award was formed, or about the person receiving the award. It is better to tell a story of a complex problem they solved instead of saying “they are a good problem solver.”

Magnification

Take a trait of the individual and magnify it. I’m not talking about superfluous embellishment; I’m talking about honest elaboration. If they discovered an accounting mistake, talk about the difficulty of noticing such a mistake, and talk about the financial impact on the group because the correction was made. In short, find heroism in events where others might not notice. Magnification means finding the extraordinary which is often hidden:  loyalty, work ethic, going the extra mile, and standing up under adversity. Let us truly see the person’s accomplishments with a bright spotlight, not just a little candlelight.

Now you know of the key elements that should be in your speech, let’s talk about the specific five-step structure of an award speech.

Five-Step Award Process

Greet the audience.

Welcome the audience to the event. Thank them for attending and address any special guests or sponsors.

Describe the Award

Open your speech with a greeting and then describe the award. Tell about the organization that is giving the award and why this award was created. Who founded this award? What’s the story behind the award? What makes this award unique?  Describe the criteria for selecting a winner. Who decides? What are the criteria?

Tell Why They Deserved the Award

Describe the attributes of the person who will be receiving the award.  If possible, tell a story about the person. The more details, the better. People who come to awards ceremonies like to be inspired and they like to feel included. The more you can make everyone feel like they are part of something special, the better your speech will be. This is the most important part of the award. Make the recipient feel special by telling stories of their achievements and calling out specific highlights of their achievements.

If there are multiple recipients for the same award, for example, awards for everyone who completed upper-level training, you can highlight the task they had to do to receive the recognition. You can tell a story about one part of the training that will be familiar to those who completed it.

Present the Award

Announce the person’s name who will be receiving the award.  Consider writing yourself a note on how to pronounce the name.  Find out in advance their preferred name and if you should use an honorific. As they approach to claim the award, be sure that they know where they are supposed to stand. If you didn’t tell them before the presentation, you should indicate in some way where they should go and what they should do. Do they stand beside you or somewhere else? Will there be a handshake? Do they hold the award? Do they grab the award and go or do they stay while you talk about them? This is their moment, and you don’t want to make them feel awkward because they don’t know what they are supposed to do.

Present the award to them with a handshake and a smile. Be sure to pause so the photographers can take a picture.

Wish Them Well

While they are still upfront, give a statement that wishes them well. This is done most effectively when it is connected to the theme of the award. If it is a sales award, make reference to sales, if it is a teaching award, make reference to teaching, if it is an academic award, make reference to how they will use their academics.

Practical Mechanics

You have your speech written and you are setting up the room where you will give the award. It is time to think of some very practical things like the location of the award, the location of the handshake, and the location of the photographer.

Location of the Award

Where are you going to set the award?  If there are multiple awards, you will likely need to set up a table and have someone help pass out the awards.  Before the event, you should have someone pretend to get an award to help you figure out any potential issues.

Location of the Handshake

Where are you going to do the handshake? When they come up and receive the award, are you going to shake their hand and give them the award or will another distinguished leader give the award and the handshake? If you are standing behind the podium, it is hard to shake hands and get a good photo, so it will be important that you step in front of the podium or off to the side for the handshake.

Location of the Photographer

Where are you going to have the photographer stand? In high-profile awards, there may be a professional photographer who requires a special setup. Always be mindful of where they will be located and make sure they don’t block the view from the other guests. In addition, most people will have family, friends, colleagues in the audience who will want a picture. Make sure you have an aisle clear, so photo takers have a clear view. Write yourself a note to pause and let the pictures be taken.

Handshake Matters

  • Shake with the right hand.
  • Hand the award with the left hand.
  • The award or certificate goes on top.
  • Pause, smile, and face the camera.

Handshake tips.  When people get nervous, their hands may get sweaty. Keep a tissue in your pocket to wipe your hand on just in case. When you go in to shake someone’s hand open your hand wide and go in for the web of skin between the thumb and pointer finger. A typical handshake is two to three pumps, but an award handshake is typically two pumps and a long pause while pictures are being taken.

Taking it to the Next Level

To elevate the quality of your speech, add advanced language devices sometimes called colorful language. Let’s talk about the three main types that can make you sound like a speech professional–Theme, alliteration, and parallel construction.

More on using colorful language in a speech.

Alliteration: Repeat the same sound three times

  • Jake is polished, practical, and professional
  • LaShay’s got grit and goes after things that impact

Parallel Construction: Repeat the same phrase at least three times.

  • Passionate about students…
  • Passionate about learning…
  • Passionate about teaching…

Theme: Pick a theme that fits the person and the award

  • Accounting is his life.
  • He can multiply his impact.
  • The bottom line is…
  • When you look at his character, it all adds up.

Remember, your award speech is not about you– it is about the recipient and people who care about them. It is about creating a celebratory atmosphere where the audience and the recipient can feel good.  Doing the work it takes to write the speech well will make a big difference. The joy you will feel from making someone else feel special will be its own reward.

Key Takeaways

Remember this!

  • The more details about why the person deserves this award the better.
  • Include identification, narration, and magnification.
  • Practice your handshake and how to hand the award to the recipient.
  • Tell them what the award is, tell them why they deserve the award, give them the award, wish them well.

An award presentation speech should be well-crafted, informative, and inspiring, leaving the audience with a sense of awe. In this blog post, we will cover all the key elements of an effective award presentation speech, including how to craft a captivating opener, provide background on the award and its significance, highlight the awardee’s accomplishments, and maintain brevity and engagement throughout. Understanding the Purpose of an Award Presentation Speech

Honoring the recipient’s achievements is pivotal in an award presentation speech, capturing the audience’s attention from the onset. The speech should emphasize the honor and purpose of the award while expressing gratitude to the recipient, audience, and organizers. Additionally, it should inspire both the audience and the recipient, making it a momentous occasion. Incorporating these elements will make the award speech a memorable highlight of the ceremony.

The Role of a Presenter in an Award Ceremony

The presenter’s speech at an award ceremony plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for the event, demanding a high level of public speaking finesse. It serves as an introduction to the award recipient, encapsulating their name, achievements, and the purpose of the award. The speech also acts as a means of honoring the award recipient, encompassing elements of a speech giving an award to someone, an acceptance speech, and an award acceptance speech , all combined into one. Additionally, it presents an opportunity to underline the award’s purpose, the kinds of achievements it celebrates, and the individual’s significant contributions. The presentation speech template should be designed to captivate the audience, culminating in a high note, similar to giving an award to someone speech, introduction speech for award recipient, and award presentation speech, ending with a bang.

The Importance of a Well-Crafted Presentation Speech

Crafting an award presentation speech demands the emcee’s skill to sustain audience engagement within the time limit, ensuring a captivating speech until the end. The speech sets the stage for the award recipient’s heartfelt acceptance speech, requiring the emcee’s finesse in captivating the audience’s attention. Utilizing a presentation speech pdf, YouTube, or an anecdote can enhance the speech’s impact, expressing gratitude, honor, and the award’s purpose.

Key Elements of an Effective Award Presentation Speech

Utilizing a well-crafted presentation speech template with NLP terms such as award speech, certificate, and trophies can enhance its effectiveness.

Crafting a Captivating Opener

Crafting the opening of an award presentation speech sets the stage for honoring the recipient’s achievements and the award’s purpose. The emcee’s introduction must capture the audience’s attention and engage them to honor the recipient. It should establish the purpose of the award and the achievements of the recipient. Crafting this opener is crucial for laying the groundwork for the award presentation and acceptance speech, ensuring lasting impact.

Providing Background on the Award and its Significance

Crafting an award presentation speech’s background involves expressing gratitude and outlining the purpose of the award, the recipient’s achievements, and the award’s scope. Practicing the Speech for Better Delivery

Practice makes perfect when delivering an award speech. Rehearsing ensures confidence and fluency, maintaining an engaging pace and incorporating pauses for emphasis. It’s crucial to adjust the speech to the time limit, keeping it impactful. Seeking feedback refines the delivery for a polished presentation, ensuring the speech resonates with the audience. Practicing the speech is the key to delivering an award-winning presentation.

Examples of Award Presentation Speeches

Crafting an introduction that honors the award recipient’s achievements is key to engaging the audience. Express gratitude and enthusiasm in delivering the award presentation speech, structuring the acceptance speech to honor the significance of the award. Engage the audience by sharing a personalized anecdote, and conclude with an uplifting ending to inspire both the recipient and the audience.

What Can Go Wrong in a Presentation Speech and How to Avoid It?

Common pitfalls to avoid in a presentation speech include overshadowing the recipient’s achievements, rushing through the speech, using generic content, employing excessive jargon, and neglecting to plan for technical issues. By being mindful of these challenges, you can deliver a polished and impactful presentation speech.

In conclusion, delivering an award-winning presenter speech requires understanding the purpose of the speech and the role of the presenter in an award ceremony. It is important to craft a well-written speech that includes a captivating opener, provides background on the award and its significance, highlights the awardee’s accomplishments, and maintains brevity and engagement. To write an impressive speech, it is essential to know your audience, gather relevant information about the awardee, and practice the speech for better delivery. The Definition of a Welcome Speech

A welcome speech as the name suggests, is a type of speech that is mostly given by the host or hosts at the beginning of an event or a ceremony. This is where the speaker is showing some gratitude and appreciation for the people who took their time to attend the event. Welcome speeches are mostly used in school events, church events, wedding events, or any type of event that a lot of people attend too.

The Importance of Welcome Speeches

One of the most important things to remember when making welcome speeches is the fact that this is your way of captivating your audiences. This may depend on how well you deliver the speech to draw your audience in to listen. Another thing to remember is that a welcome speech should not be too long or too short. Not too short to forget to mention your guests, nor too long that it drags on.

Tips to Write Short Welcome Speeches

As we all know, welcome speeches can either turn boring or fun, depending on how they are prepared. Nobody wants to hear a speech that is too boring or too long. So to avoid issues like that, here are some tips to write short welcome speeches, followed by tips to present your short welcome speeches.

Tips for writing short welcome speeches

  • Prepare – start by simply preparing. The question here is to prepare what. Start by thinking about what you want to write. What event are you attending that needs a short introduction?
  • Draft – the next thing you should do is to make a draft of your welcome speech. Start with the important details. For example, if you are attending a church event , remember to write the names of the important people. If you are attending a graduation event, the honored guests’ names must be written as well.
  • Choice of Words – Pick your words carefully when writing a short welcome speech. Add some lively details to it but also keep it simple. You are only welcoming people and thanking them for coming . The welcome speech is not used as the main course, but merely an appetizer to the whole event.
  • Revise – After you have written it down, check your whole speech. Make sure the details are there as well as the correct spelling and word usage.
  • Tone – The tone of your writing should match the event you are attending. If it is a lively event, make it as lively as possible, if it is a depressing event, make sure it is as well.

Tips on presenting your welcome speech

  • Voice – Your voice should not be too loud nor too soft. Rather, it is enough to be heard from the back.
  • Practice – Practice on doing your speech before the actual event. Ask someone to give you feedback on how well you presented yourself and work from there.
  • Maintain Eye Contact – remember when talking to people you must make eye contact. Let your audience feel you are happy to see them attend the event.
  • Posture – How you bring yourself when making the welcome speech can say a lot of things. So it is best to stand up straight, be confident, and welcome your guests with a smile.

How many paragraphs does it take to make a short welcome speech?

Just one short paragraph. Welcome speeches are not supposed to be too long or too short. A simple 4 to 5 sentences will do, as long as the necessary details are there.

Is there a shortcut to making welcome speeches?

There is no shortcut but with practice you are able to be good at it in no time.

How do I make my short welcome speech less boring?

Watch your tone, your word usage and how you present yourself and when you read your welcome speech.

“Greetings ladies and gentlemen” this may not be much of a head turner, but it’s a start. How you present your welcome speech also matters. Being familiar with the tips on writing and the tips of giving the speech may help you in the long run. There are no shortcuts to making the best speeches, but with a lot of practice and experiences, giving welcome speeches would be a breeze.

In the business world, rewards and recognition play a crucial role in motivating employees and fostering a positive company culture. While giving a gift with a note may be a thoughtful gesture, delivering a rewards and recognition speech adds a personal touch and amplifies the impact of the recognition. This is especially significant for major employee rewards, such as a 10-year anniversary or other significant recognition events.

1. Personal Connection and Appreciation

A rewards and recognition speech allows the business owner to personally connect with the employee and express gratitude for their dedication and achievements. By taking the time to deliver a speech, the business owner demonstrates that they genuinely value and appreciate the employee's contributions. This personal touch fosters a deeper sense of connection and appreciation within the company culture.

2. Public Acknowledgment and Inspiration

When a rewards and recognition speech is delivered in a public setting, such as a company-wide event or meeting, it not only acknowledges the efforts of the individual employee but also inspires and motivates others. Seeing their colleagues being recognized and appreciated encourages other employees to strive for excellence and contribute to the success of the company. It creates a positive competitive environment where employees are motivated to perform their best.

3. Reinforcement of Company Values

A rewards and recognition speech provides an opportunity for the business owner to reinforce the company's values and goals. By highlighting the employee's achievements and how they align with the company's mission, vision, and values, the speech emphasizes the importance of these core principles. This reinforcement helps to solidify a positive company culture that is built on shared values and a sense of purpose.

4. Celebration and Team Building

Delivering a rewards and recognition speech creates a celebratory atmosphere that brings employees together as a team. It showcases the collective achievements of the company and encourages a sense of camaraderie and unity. Celebrating accomplishments through a speech allows employees to feel proud of their individual and team successes, which further strengthens the bonds within the organization.

5. Emotional Connection and Employee Engagement

A rewards and recognition speech taps into the emotional aspect of recognition. It goes beyond a simple gift and note, as it allows the business owner to communicate genuine appreciation and admiration for the employee's contributions. This emotional connection enhances employee engagement and makes them feel valued and invested in the company's success. Engaged employees are more likely to be loyal, productive, and committed to the organization.

Delivering a rewards and recognition speech is a powerful way for business owners to show appreciation and reinforce a positive company culture. It establishes a personal connection, inspires others, reinforces company values, builds team spirit, and fosters employee engagement. By recognizing and celebrating employees through a speech, business owners can create a work environment that thrives on recognition, motivation, and a shared sense of purpose.

How To Implement A Successful Rewards and Recognition Program

Creating and implementing a rewards and recognition program in a company can have numerous benefits, such as increasing employee motivation, improving performance, and enhancing employee satisfaction. It is essential to approach the implementation strategically to ensure its effectiveness. Here are some effective strategies for implementing a successful rewards and recognition program:

1. Define Clear Objectives and Goals

Before designing your rewards and recognition program, it is crucial to define clear objectives and goals. What do you want to achieve with the program? Are you aiming to boost employee morale, increase productivity, or enhance teamwork? Clearly defining your objectives will help you tailor the program to meet specific needs and ensure that it aligns with the company's overall goals.

2. Involve Employees in the Process

To make your rewards and recognition program truly effective, involve employees in the process. Conduct surveys or focus groups to gather their input and preferences. By involving employees, you can ensure that the program resonates with them, making it more meaningful and valuable. Involving employees in the decision-making process can foster a sense of ownership and engagement.

3. Develop a Variety of Recognition Initiatives

To cater to the diverse needs and preferences of your employees, it is essential to develop a variety of recognition initiatives. Consider implementing both formal and informal recognition programs. Formal recognition may include annual awards ceremonies or performance-based bonuses, while informal recognition can involve small gestures like personalized thank-you notes or shout-outs during team meetings. By offering a range of initiatives, you can ensure that different types of accomplishments are acknowledged and valued.

4. Make the Program Transparent and Equitable

Transparency and equity are crucial in a rewards and recognition program. Clearly communicate the criteria for receiving recognition and the rewards associated with it. Ensure that the criteria are fair, consistent, and unbiased . This transparency will promote a sense of fairness and prevent any perception of favoritism or inequality within the organization.

5. Create a Culture of Appreciation

Implementing a rewards and recognition program is not enough; it must be supported by a culture of appreciation. Encourage managers and leaders to regularly acknowledge and appreciate their team members' efforts. Foster a work environment where recognition is not limited to the formal program but becomes a natural part of everyday interactions. This culture of appreciation will amplify the impact of the formal program and create a positive and motivating work atmosphere.

6. Evaluate and Refine

Continuous evaluation and refinement are essential for the long-term success of a rewards and recognition program. Regularly collect feedback from employees and managers to identify areas of improvement. Analyze the effectiveness of different initiatives and adjust them as necessary. By regularly evaluating and refining the program, you can ensure that it remains relevant, impactful, and aligned with the evolving needs of the organization.

Implementing a rewards and recognition program requires thoughtful planning and execution. By following these strategies, you can create a program that not only rewards and recognizes employees' contributions but also inspires and motivates them to achieve their best.

By considering these factors, business owners can fairly determine who to reward and ensure that recognition is given to those who truly deserve it.

Potential Challenges To Avoid When Implementing A Rewards and Recognition Program

1. lack of clarity and consistency in criteria.

The success of a rewards and recognition program depends on clearly defined and consistent criteria for determining who is eligible for recognition and what types of rewards are available. Failing to establish and communicate these criteria can lead to confusion and dissatisfaction among employees . It is essential to ensure that the criteria are fair, transparent, and aligned with organizational goals.

2. Inadequate communication and feedback

Effective communication is crucial when implementing a rewards and recognition program. Employees need to understand the purpose of the program, how it works, and what is expected of them to be eligible for recognition. Regular feedback is also vital to ensure that employees understand why they are being recognized and to reinforce positive behaviors. Without proper communication and feedback, employees may feel undervalued or uncertain about the program's objectives.

3. Limited variety and personalization of rewards

Offering a limited range of rewards or failing to personalize them to individual preferences can diminish the impact of a rewards and recognition program. Different employees may value different types of rewards, whether it's financial incentives, professional development opportunities, or public recognition. It is important to consider individual preferences and offer a variety of rewards that align with employees' needs and aspirations.

4. Lack of alignment with organizational values

A rewards and recognition program should align with the core values and goals of an organization. If the program does not reflect the organization's values or reinforce behaviors that contribute to its success, it may be perceived as inauthentic or disconnected from the broader objectives. It is essential to design a program that supports the desired culture and drives employee engagement and performance in a way that aligns with the organization's mission and values.

5. Failure to recognize team efforts

While recognizing individual achievements is important, it is equally crucial to acknowledge and reward team accomplishments. Neglecting to recognize the contributions of teams can create a sense of competition and undermine collaboration, which are essential for overall organizational success. Incorporate team-based rewards and recognition initiatives to foster a sense of camaraderie and motivate collective efforts.

6. Inconsistent and infrequent recognition

Recognition should be timely and consistent to be effective. Delayed or infrequent recognition can diminish its impact and may lead to a decrease in employee motivation. Establish a regular cadence for recognition and ensure that it is provided promptly when deserved. Consistency in recognizing achievements will help reinforce positive behaviors and maintain employee engagement.

7. Lack of management support and involvement

The success of a rewards and recognition program relies heavily on the support and involvement of management. If leaders do not actively participate or demonstrate enthusiasm for the program, employees may perceive it as insignificant or insincere. It is crucial to engage managers at all levels and empower them to recognize and reward employees' achievements. Managers should serve as role models and champions of the program to foster a culture of appreciation and recognition.

Implementing a rewards and recognition program can be a powerful tool for motivating employees, increasing engagement, and driving organizational success. By addressing and avoiding these potential challenges and pitfalls, organizations can create a program that effectively recognizes and rewards employees for their contributions and accomplishments.

Best Practices for Implementing A Rewards and Recognition Program

Implementing a rewards and recognition program is a crucial step in fostering employee engagement, motivation, and loyalty within an organization. It requires careful planning and execution to ensure its effectiveness. We will explore the best practices for implementing a successful rewards and recognition program.

1. Clearly Define Program Objectives

Before implementing a rewards and recognition program, it is essential to define clear objectives. This involves identifying the behaviors, achievements, or contributions that will be rewarded, as well as the desired outcomes of the program. By clearly defining program objectives, organizations can align the program with their overall business goals and ensure its relevance and effectiveness.

2. Align Rewards with Employee Preferences

To ensure the success of a rewards and recognition program, it is important to align the rewards with the preferences and aspirations of employees. Conducting surveys or focus groups can help gather employee feedback and identify the types of rewards that would motivate and resonate with them the most. This could include monetary incentives, non-monetary rewards, or a combination of both.

3. Make the Recognition Timely and Specific

Recognition should be timely and specific to have a lasting impact on employee motivation and morale. It is important to recognize and reward employees promptly after they have achieved the desired behaviors or accomplishments. Recognition should be specific, highlighting the specific actions or contributions that led to the recognition. This helps reinforce desired behaviors and demonstrates the value placed on those actions.

4. Foster a Culture of Peer-to-Peer Recognition

In addition to formal recognition from managers or supervisors, organizations should encourage peer-to-peer recognition. This creates a positive and inclusive work environment where employees feel valued and appreciated by their colleagues. Implementing a platform or system for employees to easily recognize and appreciate each other's efforts can enhance teamwork, collaboration, and overall employee satisfaction.

5. Communicate and Promote the Program

Effective communication and promotion of the rewards and recognition program are essential for its success. Organizations should clearly communicate the program's objectives, eligibility criteria, and rewards to all employees. This can be done through email announcements, intranet postings, or even in-person meetings. Regular reminders and updates about the program can help maintain awareness and encourage participation.

6. Ensure Fairness and Transparency

A successful rewards and recognition program should be perceived as fair and transparent by employees. The criteria for eligibility and selection of recipients should be clearly communicated and consistently applied. To build trust and credibility, it is important to ensure that the program is free from favoritism or bias. Regular evaluations of the program's effectiveness and fairness can help identify any areas for improvement.

7. Measure and Track Results

To evaluate the effectiveness of a rewards and recognition program, it is important to measure and track its results. This can be done through employee surveys, performance metrics, or feedback sessions. By analyzing the data, organizations can identify any gaps or areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments to enhance the program's impact.

By following these best practices, organizations can implement a rewards and recognition program that effectively motivates and engages employees. This, in turn, leads to increased productivity, employee satisfaction, and overall organizational success. Implementing a well-designed program that aligns with the organization's goals and employee preferences is crucial for achieving these desired outcomes.

Good Afternoon to all the honorable guests present in this award ceremony!

I am Rahul, the host for this evening. I feel honored to share the students’ achievements and celebrate all of the school students’ extraordinary performances. With excellent performances, all of the participants proved that everybody is a winner.

We consider children as our future. So, we should brighten up their future by bringing forth the hidden talents of the children. Our school thought of an idea for appreciating the children and their skills through different competitions. The students not only excel in their academics but also excelled in leadership and teamwork qualities, flexibility and determination, self-confidence and belief, and lastly, respect and sincerity towards the teachers and seniors. The school organized different essay competitions, debate competitions, sports competitions, and many other competitions.

All the candidates, who reached the final stage, went through different fierce competitions for the final selection. It was an inter-school competition, so the battle was intense as well. Students from each school gave their best. I congratulate all of the students for reaching this final level, and I give my best wishes to them for the results of the award ceremony. The results will be out soon, which I will announce in this ceremony. Every student has some extraordinary quality who will make an appropriate role model in the future, despite their various interests.

But first, let me fulfill my duty for today. I want to welcome all the guests in this grand award ceremony to give appreciation and prizes to the students. I request them to inspire the students with their kind and hopeful words for the student’s prospects.

I am very honored to welcome our chief guest of the evening, who does not need any formal introduction because everybody is familiar with his achievements, developments, and improvements in the city’s infrastructural and environmental works. He is none other than Mr. Paritosh Roy, City’s District Magistrate.

I want to welcome the committee members of our school, Our honorable principal madam, our headmistress, and school committee members in this prestigious award ceremony.

I also want to express my gratitude to those parents and teachers who have made a lot of effort to support, develop, and finalize the personality of the young talents present with us this evening.

I want to welcome all our honorary judges who have evaluated and analyzed each candidate and gave their valuable decisions. I am sure that choosing the winner from the students was a difficult choice, as all of the student’s performances were tremendous.

Lastly, I would like to say a few words for the students who might not win any prizes. There was no doubt that you all gave fantastic performances. But it is never too late to start and try again. Improvement is the key to all success.

How to Start?

Award distribution ceremonies are usually held in schools, colleges and institutions. During these ceremonies, the winners and toppers are awarded. While in some places, award distribution can be a small event, in many schools and colleges, it is a big affair.

If you are going to anchor an award distribution ceremony, this script will definitely help you. An anchor should always start a program with a fitting quote, a poem or some famous saying so that he or she is able to capture the attention of the audience. For award distribution events, quotes on the topic of determination, strength, strategy and hard work can be a good start. After that, it is important to follow up with a good welcome speech.

For example:

“It takes determination to see a dream come to pass. The question is not will you start, but will you finish.” – Joel Osteen

“Hello and a warm good morning/ good afternoon/ good evening to all! Today/ tonight is the day/ night for which our students have been eagerly waiting for a long time. Today/ tonight we are going to announce the winners of various events that were organised in our institution in the past six months and honour them with awards. Yes, the moment has finally arrived!

I am [your name], your host for today/ tonight and I heartily welcome you all to the award distribution ceremony of [institution name]. We are really honoured to have our respected principal, Mr/Ms [name], chief guest, Mr/Ms [name], revered teachers, dear parents and of course, our lovely students among us. We are very glad to have you all with us today/ tonight and I welcome you all on the behalf of [college name] to enjoy the event.”

Lamp Lighting Ceremony

Most school and college functions start with a lamp lighting ceremony. If so is the case with your institution, this is how you can invite the principal and chief guests on the stage to light the lamps:

“As we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

“Now, I would like to call on the stage our respected principal Mr/ Ms [name] as well as our chief guest Mr/ Ms [name] for the lamp lighting ceremony. Please give them a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

Honouring the Chief Guest

Once the lamps are lit, the next step is to honour the chief guest.

“Now I would like to request our Principal sir/ ma’am to honour our chief guest with the bouquet and memento. We thank you for gracing us with your presence.”

“- Thank you, sir/ ma’am. I would now request you all to please take your seats. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

Speech by the Principal

“I would now request our respected principal sir/ ma’am to please come up on the stage and say a few words. Thank you.”

After the speech:

“Thank you, Sir/ Ma’am. Your words always inspire and motivate us. Thank you. Everyone, please give him/ her a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

After the performance:

“What a soulful performance. Thank you so much. This performance made today’s event even more wonderful. Everyone, please give these talented kids a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

End of the Event

“With that, we have now come to the conclusion of the event. I hope everyone enjoyed the event and had a lot of fun. A huge congratulations to all the winners. Keep working hard. And to all the students, never give up! You all are winners in your own right! Thank you.

Welcome Speeches For Award Ceremony

A very Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening to Honorable Principal Sir/Madam, respected teachers, seniors, and my dear friends, Warm Greetings to Everyone!

I heartily welcome you all to the annual award ceremony of this institution. This is an occasion of joy for all of us as we have come together for celebrating this auspicious day. This goes without saying that the award ceremony is amongst my most treasured occasions of the school/college as it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the preceding year, address the whole community and share the achievements, success, and plans of our institution for the days to come.

Our institution truly believes that good education plays a crucial role in building a bright future for our children. Therefore, here we are committed to providing an atmosphere to our students where they all can imbibe good values and learn new things every day. I am extremely glad at the fact that our school/college committee members, as well as teachers, are leaving no stone unturned in working towards this direction. On this important occasion, we get a chance to publically celebrate this success achieved through the sheer hard work and perseverance of both our students as well as teachers.

Awards are a way to encourage good behavior and inculcate competitive spirit. This is the reason why our institution organizes an award ceremony every year to encourage its students. So we are here to give away the awards in mainly the categories for academics, distinction in sports and arts, for participating in exhibitions, debates, and other social events. The awards to be distributed today are not just for recognizing those students who have performed exceptionally well in their academics, but also to honor those students who excelled in sports, performing arts and visual arts, including the ones who were proactive in various social events. The aim is to recognize the extra talent of our students other than academics and motivate them to shine in their respective fields.

Our institution has constantly received attention from media and has well-hosted the visits of the renowned personalities from the well-known institutions, national as well as overseas. Most of the visitors have even returned to pay multiple visits to our school for closely observing our students and supporting the faculty members. Luckily, feedback received from the visiting faculties has always been positive. This certainly wouldn’t have been possible without our committed staff members and capable students of this school.

I express my heartiest gratitude to the principal, teachers, and parents for their support and collective efforts towards the development of these young talents, grooming them to achieve something substantial in life and above all, raising them with a benign attitude. Whatever our students have achieved so far would never have been possible without your constant endeavor.

Also, I would like to address those students who have not won any prize and say that do not lose hope as this is not the end of everything and there will be many more opportunities coming your way to prove your mettle.

At last, I am going to recite a few lines.

“Succeeding in life is as simple as being a good student. All you have to do is pay attention, work hard, and give it the best shot.”

Hope you all have a great time.

Thank you all.
