If you already know the employer well, you can skip this step. Just take note of everything you know and like about them, and incorporate that into your answer to explain why you want to work there. 

If you don't know the employer well, don’t fret. That’s where researching the company comes in. Look into them before the interview to figure out what they do, what their core values are, what the company’s mission is, and any other information you find useful or interesting.

When interviewers ask you “Why do you want to work here?” keep in mind they don’t want to hear a generic answer.

Always be specific and back up everything you say with concrete examples, quantifiable data, impressive achievements , and anything else you think is relevant.

After all, anyone can claim they’re passionate about a line of work or that they’re skilled at what they do. But hiring managers will always be inclined to believe candidates who can actually back up their claims.

And the best way to do that is through cold, hard data.

#8. Be Honest

As with any other question the interviewer may throw at you, from asking what your strengths and weaknesses are to asking you to talk about yourself , honesty is always the best policy.

Never, ever lie about your qualifications.

If you get hired because of a lie, you’re eventually going to get caught, and your professional reputation and career are going to suffer for it. You’re just going to waste a lot of time and resources for both yourself and the employer, and you’ll end up needing another job anyway.

Beyond that, any insincere or exaggerated reasons for wanting to join the company aren’t going to fly with most interviewers. You might seriously hurt your chances of landing the job if you’re too focused on flattering the interviewer and the company instead of telling the truth.

So, always be honest!

Don’t forget that you should apply for a job you actually like. If you go for a job that's not really what you want and you can’t think of a single thing you like about it or the company, you're probably going to be unhappy down the road and maybe even quit.

After all, the bottom line is you need a job; shouldn’t that be enough? Actually, it’s not. In the end, the situation isn’t as straightforward as it seems. Instead, the hiring manager is looking for specific information and, if you don’t know what they’re after, it’s easy to stumble. Why They Ask The Question “Why Do You Want To Work Here?”

First off, let’s explore why this question is even asked. In many ways, this question two much more complicated and dynamic questions rolled into one. Those are:

• Why do you want to work for this company?
• Why do you want this job?

Now rather than deciphering the more complex layers, most job seekers will simply answer the question in a straight forward manner: Because I need the work and you guys are offering a great rate of pay.

Okay, that’s honest…which might win you some points. But if you really want to impress your interviewer, you need to make sure that you’re not only answering it, but that you’re answering the layers…and tailoring your answer.

Remember all that research you did on the company before you even got to the interview stage? Here is yet another opportunity for you to not only showcase what you know, but wrap it up with what you can provide skill wise.

Mistakes To Avoid

1. being too honest:.

“Uh, because I’m totally unemployed and sorta desperate at this moment which means my standards for what I’ll do for money are pretty low and flexible right now, including working for you.”

Again, bonus points for being honest. Although we always encourage you to tell the truth, there is a time and place for this level of transparency, and this isn’t it. It makes it seem as if the role is inconsequential, and that’ll never work in your favor.

2. Being too generic:

“Well, it seems like this is a super cool company to work for and it would be great to be able to get a job here.”

Not only is this answer generic, but it doesn’t showcase any of the research that you’ve done on the company or the position. In the end, that kind of answer won’t stand out. Plus, it’s a missed opportunity to showcase your passion for the opportunity and your capabilities.

3. A boring apathetic answer:

“I dunno.  I saw you were hiring.  Guess you wouldn’t be advertising if you didn’t have a job opening and I could really use one…a job that is.  So…we gonna do this or what?”

Your job is to convince the hiring manager that you’re the perfect candidate, and this approach doesn’t do that. It makes the job seem inconsequential. Plus, it’s a hair pushy, which isn’t ideal.

4. Being wishy washy:

“Uh, I don’t know.  I mean, I need a job and well, you guys have a super cool website and I really like your company logo colors so I guess…give me a chance?”

With this answer, any reference to the company is incredibly superficial, which isn’t great. Couple that with asking for a change – a strategy that makes it seem as if you lack confidence – and there’s a high chance the hiring manager is passing you by.

5. Being inappropriately funny:

“Because you guys need me.  I’m the best of the best and then there’s the rest.”

Shockingly, out of the five example bad answers, this one is actually closest to what you do want to say…just maybe not in quite such a cocky way.  No, seriously, this is close.  Keep reading to see what we mean!

How To Answer “Why Do You Want To Work Here? / Why Do You Want To Work For Us?”

If you’re wondering how to answer “Why do you want to work here?” the process is actually surprisingly simple. The first thing you need to do to prepare for this question is to ask it yourself.  Just “Why do you want to work for this company?” What do they offer that makes working there enticing?

Is it just the paycheck that interests you? If that’s all you can find, then maybe you should continue to look for another job.  Yes, money is a great incentive, but it shouldn’t be your only incentive, especially as you continue to advance your career.

So, ask again, why do you want to work here?

Remember, every job is a stepping stone to your next position and a job that offers you nothing more than money can be just as big a roadblock as no job. Look at your career goals.  How does this company and this job align with your future plans?  Is this job a stepping stone or a holding cell? Does the position AND company align well with your personal brand?

If you get this job, is it one you really want?  Is it a job you can see yourself doing with enthusiasm?

Is it a job that, when review time comes around, your supervisor can see that you are not only motivated, but a dedicated employee worthy of advancement and bonuses? Or are you like a prisoner…just marking time until you get out?

Once you answer those questions, ask yourself about the company overall.

As you’ve done your pre-interview research, have you come across aspects of the company values and goals that align with what you’re looking for?  Can you work for them in good conscience?

Can you say that what they represent aligns with what you represent?  Would you be proud putting that job on your resume or telling people you work for that corporation in casual conversation?

What is it about the company that attracts you?  What aspects appeal to you?

Is it the job itself or is it something within the company?  Is it their outreach?  Their community service?  Their role in the bigger global market picture?

Ask yourself, “Why do I want to work here?”

Once you start answering these questions, you can then in turn, refine them down into easy to remember answers that will not only impress your interviewer, but help answer an otherwise stupid question!

“I saw a story a few months ago on the news about the outreach your company does with the local community.  Giving back is a big part of my personal philosophy and I was excited to see that there was a company that felt the same way.  I was elated when I found out there was a job opening in my skill set here.  I would really hope to be able to come to work every day to a place where I knew not only are my technical skills valuable, but my personal philosophies about the value of volunteering are as well.”

Uh, hello.  Perfect answer!  You’re not only aligning yourself with the company as far as philosophy goes, but you’re complimenting the outreach and promoting your skills at the same time.  It’s a triple threat!  Great job!

2. Company Culture

“While I feel that my technical skills are an excellent fit for your needs, the core reason I want to work here is because of the amazing culture. The company’s mission and values align with my own. Plus, your company doesn’t just talk big; it takes action, showing its dedication to its purpose and stated priorities.

“One point that stood out was the commitment to teamwork. I really believe in the value of collaboration, and so when I saw a position with your company to join your engineering department I had to apply.  I believe strongly in working with other people towards a common goal and I know the skills I bring not only as an engineer, but as a team member will not only bring me work satisfaction, but will make me a valuable teammate as well.”

This answer is great because it not only highlights your skills as an engineer but also as an individual who works well with others.

3. Employer Brand

“I believe strongly in going the extra mile for my employer, and I appreciate it when a company feels the same way regarding its employees. As I was reviewing your social media accounts, your employer brand was incredibly clear. While you have high expectations of your workforce, the company holds itself to a high standard, too, ensuring it does its part to promote wellness, offer competitive compensation, and create an optimal workplace for success. In the end, that’s a company I want to join.”

4. Work Arrangements

“As with most professionals, the pandemic altered my perspective on my career and what it means to work hard. I found that remote work didn’t just suit me, it allowed me to thrive both personally and professionally. Along with boosting my productivity, I was able to hone critical skills, including written communication and collaboration. Plus, I had the opportunity to learn a new coding language, all because I eliminated commuting. The ability to work from home is something I value, all because it helps me succeed. The fact that your company offers that as an option, make what was already an enticing job an exceptional fit.”

5. Company Mission

As we’ve demonstrated above, although there are definitely wrong answers, there are no set right answers to the question “Why do you want to work here?”

Each interview is going to require you to do your homework, your research and tailoring. But once you do, and you really focus down your answers and target them to not only the position, but the company overall, this question might just give you the opportunity to whip out your smartest answers yet!

• Ability to complete tasks on time
• Have a certain number of soft skills —communication, critical-thinking, problem-solving, etc.
• Motivation to grow your technical skills on your own time

Why are you interested in the Company?

Ask yourself — why do you think your position best fits with the company’s requirement?

Do you share the same goals with the company?

What motivated you to apply for the company in the first place?

Once you’re able to find the answers to these questions, you can better figure out what aspects of the company appealed to you.

Why are you interested in the job?

Are you someone trying to make ends meet?

Is this a temporary career path that you intend to pursue for a few years?

Hiring managers like to know if their candidates are best suited for a long-term commitment or they wish to pursue other companies after a span of 1-2 years.

Depending on your commitment, the company may not wish to hire candidates on a short-term basis and may simply reject your application.

The following two questions make it clear as to why you would want to work in a company and what is attractive about the job position offered.

While answering, it’s necessary to portray your passion for the work instead of looking at the job as a way to make money.

HOW TO BEST PREPARE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION

Conduct research.

Being informed about the company that you are applying for provides you with knowledge on how to answer better.

Study the company’s background, values, senior team members, and create an answer based on the company’s mission projecting your desire to achieve those values.

Spend time analyzing the “About me” page on the company’s website, understand the vision of the company and what type of employees work in its offices.

Once you’ve data mined the entire history of the company, you’re in a better position to provide an answer to the question.

LinkedIn company profiles offer much needed information on the type of hires the company has made recently and what positions are in high demand. It also provides statistics, recent promotions, related companies, and former employees of the company.

Every company usually has a personal blog with achievements, milestones, and other important news. Reading the company’s blog is one of the best ways to attain information not visible to the naked eye. You can then quote a recent achievement and mention how it motivated you enough to approach the company for a job.

By gaining information on the company, you gain an interview edge over other candidates.

Another important factor is to read reviews left by former employees in websites such as Glassdoor . Knowing the background of the company puts you in a better position to personalize your answer based on research.

Show your value

As a professional, you need to demonstrate and match your skills to the requirement of the company.

You need to sound attractive describing your key skills and in what way the company benefits from utilizing them. Sell your services!

Don’t sound monotonous and talk entirely about your technical skills.

Your interviewer understands you’re an expert at what you do and he doesn’t need you to re-read what’s already mentioned on the resume.

Instead, talk about your soft skills and mention a story on how you converted a query into a lead.

A big turn off for interviewer’s is when the candidate utilizes outdated trends to show why they want to work in the company.

4 MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN ANSWERING THE QUESTION

Mistake 1. too generic.

Often when hiring managers are interviewing candidates, they are used to hearing vague and over enthusiastic responses from desperate job-hungry entrants that don’t really answer the question.

Answers like “Because it’s the best company to work for and I would be great for this position.” — aren’t really what the hiring manager wants to hear. You need to describe what makes the company “best” and why your position would be “great” for the company.

Generic responses usually showcase that the candidate has no idea about the company and that they haven’t done any background research.

It’s an easy way for interviewers to reject the candidate upfront without needing to follow up with another interview round.

Mistake 2. Inappropriate Humor

“You guys look like you could need a hardworking professional like myself in this company” — A response such as this is sure to backfire, and you’ll be shown the door.

Keep the humor down and don’t try to shame the company in a negative light.

It’s alright to be a wise man and dim down the seriousness in an interview but trying to sound arrogant and obnoxious will hurt your chances big time.

Introduce light humor such as “ I wish I spent more time rehearsing in front of the mirror for the interview instead of showing up 2 hours before the interview time”.

According to researcher Anindya Sen , humor has two representative sides — one that brings out the positive and cognitive response from listeners and other that isn’t necessarily accepted by a wide audience.

Using this study, we can state that utilizing humor that is positive to the conversation is the right way to engage in dialogue with your interviewer.

It’s alright to make snide remarks enough to lighten the mood. The interviewer will also identify the playful side of you and will certainly take into consideration your ability to lessen tension among the team members in the company.

However, when you have no idea of the kind of humor that pushes the boundary too far, it’s best to follow a simplistic and disciplined approach and stick to the basics.

Mistake 3. Being Too Honest

“I desperately need the money and I am trying all the companies I can for a job, your company just happens to be one of the many” — While being honest has its own perks, during an interview, its best to keep your personal interests to yourself and demonstrate your professional side to the interviewer.

Every individual has financial constraints and by openly talking about your problems with your interviewer, you begin to demonstrate that the job takes 2 nd fiddle to your financial problems.

No company will hire an employee that is only looking to make their ends meet. Your interviewer is most likely going to sympathize with your situation but you’re never going to get a job.

Ensure you focus on your professional side and offer your expertise while hiding your financial burden when talking about why you want to work with the company.

Mistake 4. Stammering and Stuttering a Lot

Being nervous is a part and parcel of being a human.

Constantly stuttering and stammering portrays you as an individual that lacks confidence and the company will think twice before they offer a position to a person that isn’t sure about what he wants.

For example, take the role of an interviewer, imagine a candidate just walked into your office and you were presented with the following dialogue —

You — “Welcome, Have a seat.”

Candidate — “Uh….Thaaa..n…nk …yo..u..”

You — “There’s absolutely no need to be nervous, so I’d like to know why do you want to work here?”

Candidate — “Uh…yeaa…sure…Welll…I….lov …ee..um…to worrk in yourrr…..compan..ny be….ca..usee.”

Can you see the problem here?

If it’s taking the whole day to try and understand what a nervous candidate is talking about, imagine if they were hired and had to work with other team members in a live work environment — not going to happen!

Brushing up on your communication skills is important, if you are prone to stammering in a nervous situation, it’s time to work on it. Changes such as —

• Rehearsing in front of the mirror
• Visualizing an interview
• Watching personality grooming videos or visiting personality workshops to improve your overall behavior

SAMPLE RESPONSES FOR “WHY DO YOU WANT TO WORK HERE”

Response 1..

“I’d like to provide my 5 years of marketing experience to a company that is renowned in the digital marketing world. Former employees have vouched for the values of the company and how candidates are encouraged to share their ideas to come up with new solutions for an ongoing project. It’s for this reason that I have picked your company as my preferred choice of employment.”

Case Scenario

The candidate in the following response identifies with the company as being a favorable place for employment.

He feels the company offers employees with the freedom to come up with their own unique ideas to contribute without being restricted by the senior management and hence, he prefers to work in a company that promotes creativity.

The candidate also mentions that former employees have provided valuable positive feedback about the company and this helped him make a decision in seeking employment with the respective organization.

The hiring manager now understands that the candidate has over 5 years of experience in his field along with a valid reason for working in the company.

Response 2.

“I read about the company’s recent achievements in Business Week’s featured article and how the organization rewards hard-working employees with company stocks. I consider myself an innovator and my resume has all my accomplishments listed, I hope I too can someday be a part of the hardworking team that has made the company a shining success”

The candidate is looking to provide his expertise and hopes to become a hardworking member of the team to receive a small portion of the company’s shares. Immediately the hiring manager understands that the candidate in question is looking to work for a longer duration to achieve the necessary accomplishments.

Another reason to impress the interviewer is the fact that the candidate is well-read and up-to-date with the latest articles in magazines.

Being alert and updated with news is a foremost quality that organizations tend to take notice while interviewing new recruits.

Response 3.

“ I’ve got a proven track record and have experience in working with the latest innovative software related to the industry. I have experience in dealing with difficult working conditions and hence, can begin producing results within the 1 st month of recruitment. For more information, you can inquire about my feedback from my past co-workers and senior managers on the quality of my work. The reason I want to join your company is to keep up-to-date with trends”

This type of response oozes with confidence and the candidate is asking the hiring manager to contact any past managers and employees for a positive feedback.

He also provides a track record on the portfolio for the hiring manager to validate.

The response is great in demonstrating to your hiring manager that there’s nothing to hide and everyone you’ve worked with can vouch for your good work ethics.

The reason for joining the company is as simple as remaining relevant in the field and that you prefer working with companies that take current technology seriously.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The question — “Why Do You Want to Work Here?” may seem simple enough to answer, however, on further inspection, many candidates have realized that by not being prepared they have lost a shot at the job for not being able to answer this very question.

It was great to watch that fly-on-the-wall video of your production team on the company website, as I could immediately see how well the team gelled and pulled together. Plus, the banter between them was amusing. This is perfect for me as I flourish in team situations and when bouncing ideas off colleagues.

Top Tip: Try not to fall into the trap of focusing on yourself at this point. By all means, relate the company's standards to how you partake in teamwork and collaboration, but stick to the point at all times.

2 . Your company values of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer commitment really stand out to me. A business is nothing without its customers, so making sure they're happy not only benefits them but also the bottom line. With over 10 years of customer satisfaction experience, I believe my skill set in that area will be of true value to you.

Top Tip: Look out for the signs of a toxic workplace before accepting the job. Even if the website is all bells and whistles, with elaborate content on values, beliefs, and ethics, it's what's beneath the surface that counts.

3 . I have to admit that I'm obsessed with Twitter and Instagram, so your involvement and ground-breaking attitude to social media platforms had me hooked as soon as I saw this opening. I follow the company on social media and can see the innovative ways it's used. I just want to be part of that.

Top Tip: Don't put down the company's social media content or sites during the interview, unless you're 100% confident that you can improve them or the position relates to doing just that.

4 . Being quite a nerdy, techy type of person, the newest technology on the block is always going to pique my interest. Your stance on inviting that in and giving it a go is laudable, and something I truly agree with. I'm not afraid to give something new a try and it seems like your company has the same approach.

Top Tip: Try not to confuse the hiring manager with intricately technical lingo. They might be interviewing you, but they might not be au fait with the intricate details of the role, so you don't want to embarrass them by talking in a language that they don't understand. It'll make them feel ignorant, and that's not a good start to an interview.

5 . Part of the reason that I applied for this posting is because of the great accolades I've heard from staff who work here. The construction industry is very connected and, having gained experience in it over the past eight years, I've got to know a lot of staff from other companies and subcontractors. Word gets around about the best companies to work for, and your organization pops up time and time again, so when this opportunity arose for a role I was interested in, I leapt at it.

Top Tip: If you don't know anyone at the company, check out any employee reviews you can find, or link with/follow some current members of staff via Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.

Sure, you might have a stellar resume that scores several job interviews, but having cookie-cutter answers to important questions won’t get you hired.

• Your resume sells your skill set, but you still need to sell yourself as someone who will contribute to the company.

You also want to determine the value this job could bring your future.

Unless you’re in a position where you simply need a job to make ends meet, you should pick jobs based on how they can help your career ambitions.

Here are some thoughts to consider when crafting this portion of your answer.

Professional Development

Getting a job at any company doesn’t mean you have to work there your entire career, but it should offer ways for you to develop professionally.

• Look at trainings that are offered to employees and how they support their staff.

If you feel like you might just be a paper-pusher without getting any additional tools or support, you might not want to apply.

• On the other hand, if you have ambitions, be sure to let the hiring manager know how this opportunity will help you achieve your goals.

Ambitious employees have a reason to bring their A game. They want to do their best, climb the professional ladder, and achieve success.

That’s why they’ll contribute to the team, do anything to gain experience, and grow the company’s bottom line.

Organization Structure

When you look at how the company operates, is it a structure that you can move up in?

If a company is known for putting their employees in the best position to succeed, you can make this a part of your pitch.

• Hiring managers want team members who want to grow.

These types of team members become star employees. They become leaders within the company structure.

Promotion Potential

I’ve also read that your company encourages employee development, which is something I envision doing. My goal is to learn additional management skills, along with database training and client relations. I want to work for a company that invests in its people.”

This might seem a little strange to consider, but it can mean a lot to the interviewers, especially if you’re applying from another area.

• This is one area that you could leave out of your answer, but it could boost you above the competition if you can prove you already see yourself living nearby.

Do some research on the nearby area to see if it incorporates any of your hobbies and interests.

You can also take a look at what type of commuting options are available based on your potential residence.

If you choose to mention the location in your answer, it might go something like this:

“After doing some research about Pittsburgh, I found that this area has a lot for me if I’m offered a position at PPG. I love that the office is located downtown so I can walk or ride my bike to work. It would be so cool to go to hockey games after work when I can, and it’s a short walk away from the office. Also, I saw that Chipotle, one of my favorite lunch places, is only two minutes away.”

What Not to Include

When answering this question, there are some points that you should steer away from.

These can turn off the interviewing team and make them second-guess your real motives.

Salary and Benefits

It’s possible you might be asked about salary in another question, but this is most definitely NOT the response you’ll want to bring up money.

• Focus on selling your skill set and how you see yourself filling the position rather than filling your pockets.

Even if the benefits package is stellar, this should not be mentioned when explaining why you want to work there.

• Companies want employees that will contribute to their service and mission, not one that is worried more about the benefits that come with the job.

Yeah, it might be really cool that you could have your next degree paid for, but that shouldn’t be the sole reason you want to work for a company.

Time-Off Policy

Some companies are moving toward more flexible time-off policies. As cool as they are, it shouldn’t be the focus of your reason for wanting to work somewhere.

If an interview panel senses that you might abuse that policy or any policy, that might deter them from offering you the job.

Negative Things About Past Employers

If you’re hoping to move out of your existing position at another company, you may be tempted to compare your past employer with your potential new one.

• Speaking ill of your previous employer might leave a sour taste in their mouth. Instead of speaking negatively, focus on the positives of the company you’re interviewing with.

Make sure you don’t catch yourself saying anything like this during your interview:

“At my last job, I wasn’t making enough money to pay my bills, so I had to cancel my cable. With this job, I could finally get that back and use the actual skills I learned in college. Also, my manager never gave me the time off I needed when I wanted to travel to visit my family in California, and this job seems like I’ll be able to have that time and money to see them more.”

These things might be true, but there is a better way to phrase the same concepts more professionally and appropriately.

“I’ve learned to cut back and prioritize what’s really important in my life. This job would fulfill me more, especially because I’ll be utilizing the skills I learned when studying manufacturing engineering . Prioritizing my career is important to me at this point in my life. I want to work doing what I enjoy. While I haven’t had many opportunities in the past to do so, I know this is all a part of being a consummate professional. Now is the time. I’ve built my skills in the industry and see myself taking my performance to the next level. Here, now, I’m looking for the opportunity that takes my contributions to the next level.”

How to Prepare

Now that you have all the information to craft a beautiful answer to this question, you’ll want to practice before the interview day.

Before you take a seat in front of the interviewer, do the following to really wow them.

• Make a list. As you do your research, make sure you’re tracking all the positive information you come across. Creating a list is the easiest way to keep all the information in one place without worrying about finding it again.
• Write out your response. Physically writing out your response will help solidify the reasons you want to work for that company. If it feels unnatural or forced to write, that could mean you’re not being truthful. It can also mean you haven’t reflected deeply enough.
• Say the words out loud to determine if they sound natural. You might tweak some wording or realize another word fits better to convey your. As you practice, you can go off script a bit to make your response so more authentic. Don’t sound like a robot during your interview.

Another answer to avoid is: “I’d do anything to work for COMPANY X.” This positions you as a person who lacks integrity, has low self-esteem and does not demand enough from others. If you’re willing to do anything, the employer is likely to offer you as little as possible, and that employer may be concerned that you will “do anything” to keep your job, too — cut corners, hide mistakes, even break the law. Some think the “Everyone wants to work with COMPANY X” will cinch the job. This type of answer positions you as a commodity. You just became one of a million instead of one in a million. And avoid the dreaded, “I’m just trying to get a job.” This suggests you’re simply putting in your time and punching a clock. So working with [customers/team members] to find the next level of [product/service] would be a challenge I’d like to take on.” “In my current position, [skill/talent/knowledge] is one of my greatest strengths. It sounds like I could really make a difference here for the [company/customers].” “[Company] is positioned for [company mission], and that goal is something I want to be a part of so I can use my [knowledge/skills/talent] to be a part of the team to get there.” Craft an answer that articulates an advantage for you, the company, and the customer.
