  • Notable Scholarships Available: Rose Garreau American Indian Scholarship, Lorig Public History Scholarship

An online master’s program may help you fit graduate education into a busy schedule, especially if you choose a program with asynchronous courses or weekend and evening courses.

Distance learning can reduce travel costs and student fees as well. Plus, many public universities offer in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates to online students, even if they live out of state.

And thanks to their limited travel requirements, distance-learning programs are more accessible for many online students—especially those with their sights set on faraway schools.

Despite the many positives of online programs, not all students thrive in online learning environments. Online programs require more independence, self-motivation and organizational skills than on-campus programs since they involve less structure and peer accountability. If you learn better in more structured environments, you might consider an in-person or hybrid program instead.

Any prospective college students should consider institutional accreditation first and foremost. Organizations approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education provide accreditation to schools that meet high standards for quality in terms of academics, faculty, student support and student outcomes.

Attending an unaccredited school could leave you with fewer financial aid options and make it more difficult to transfer credits. Also, employers, licensing bodies and doctoral programs may not recognize degrees from unaccredited institutions.

Programmatic accreditation provides quality assurance for specific degree programs and departments within schools. The importance of programmatic accreditation varies by field. Some careers require candidates to hold programmatically accredited degrees; for other professions, programmatic accreditation may not even exist.

Before committing to a school or program, know the accreditation requirements for your field. You can check a school’s or program’s accreditation status using CHEA’s directories .

Consider Your Future Goals

It’s important you think about your future plans when picking an online master’s school and program. If you have a particular area of interest in mind for your desired career, look for a program that offers a relevant specialization or faculty members with relevant expertise.

If you plan to pursue a doctoral degree after earning your master’s, prioritize research-oriented programs designed to prepare you for a doctorate. Depending on your career and educational goals, you might seek out programs that involve practical experience components, student portfolios or thesis requirements.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Tuition prices for online master’s programs vary considerably by school, discipline and course load. At the schools on this list, per-credit tuition prices range from $315 to over $2,600. For a 30-credit master’s degree, this brings estimated total tuition between $9,450 and $138,000.

For comparison, according to the National Center for Education Statistics , the average annual graduate tuition rate was $19,749 in the 2020-21 academic year. Over the course of a typical two-year master’s program, this comes out to nearly $40,000.

Compared to national averages, many of the schools ranked on this page offer competitive tuition rates. Even so, many graduate students turn to financial aid to help fund their degrees. Completing the Free Application for Federal Student  Aid (FAFSA®) ensures eligibility for federal student aid and various scholarships, including institutional aid at many schools. You can also explore private loans and third-party scholarship providers to supplement any aid you receive.

Is an online master's degree respected?

Yes. Typically, online master’s programs provide the same education and faculty as on-campus programs. In most cases, your diploma won’t even indicate whether you earned your degree online or on campus.

Is an online master's degree worth the money?

Yes. As long as your school and program are properly accredited, an online master’s degree is just as valuable as an on-campus degree. Plus, an online master’s program reduces transportation costs and makes it easier to earn an income while completing your studies.

What is a master’s degree?

A master’s degree is a graduate-level diploma that indicates advanced knowledge of a specialized subject.

Can I finish my master’s degree 100% online?

Maybe, depending on the subject. Some subjects, such as business, lend themselves to fully online learning because they do not require in-person components. Others, like social work and healthcare subjects, involve clinical components that must take place in person.

How long will it take to finish an online master’s degree?

The length of an online master’s degree varies by program, but most master’s programs take one to two years to complete. Shorter programs tend to have heavier course loads; part-time students may need longer than two years to earn a master’s.

How do I choose the best online master’s program?

First, determine what you want to do with your master’s degree to narrow down a specific area of study. Next, evaluate online degree options to see which programs offer courses and specializations that align with your interests. Finally, assess your learning style to determine the best online delivery format for you.

Some folks spend their careers behind a computer screen. But social workers spend their careers elbow-deep in the rawest and most vulnerable moments of other people's lives.

In a world where people feel increasingly disconnected from others and powerless in the face of societal problems like poverty, loneliness, oppression, or addiction, social workers can help.

"If you want to be a social worker, you must have what it takes to fight for people," said MSW student Bridget Washington. "I've always known that was my calling. If you see what's wrong in the world and want to use the light inside you to fix some of the darkness, go into social work."

If that sounds like you, all you need is the right training. Check out these top online programs to start earning your degree on your own terms.

Why Should I Get a Master of Social Work Online?

A social work bachelor's degree helps you pursue entry-level positions. But a social work master's degree can prepare you for better opportunities, better pay, and greater impact.

You'll have far fewer opportunities, professionally, without a graduate degree, said Ada Dye, LCSW, MBA.

Benefits of an MSW

  • Boost your earning potential
  • Qualify for licensure and clinical work
  • Gain access to liability insurance
  • Qualify for more interesting jobs

Reasons to Get Your MSW Online

How to Choose an Online Master of Social Work Program

As you're choosing the right online master of social work program to meet your goals, it's important to consider several factors:

Specialization and Concentration Offerings

Many online MSW programs offer concentrations in a particular specialty or client, while others offer a generalist focus. Find an online program with a concentration that aligns with your passions and career goals.

Student Support Services

Student support services provide academic and personal support to improve student retention and graduation rates. The services are designed for students with academic needs or first-generation college students to promote their success.

Accreditation

Accreditation is a voluntary process that ensures online MSW programs meet educational and industry standards. Attending an accredited program is essential for those looking to become a licensed social worker. Each program listed below has been accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE).

Several factors influence online MSW program costs , including whether you're paying in-state or out-of-state tuition, taking part-time or full-time classes, or attending a private or public school.

You can help lower costs by applying for scholarships and grant programs. If you're currently working, ask your employer if they provide tuition reimbursement.

What to Expect from an Online Master of Social Work Program

After graduating with a online master's of social work , you'll be prepared to work in direct practice with individuals, groups, couples, and families.

Most states offer multiple categories for licensure . With an online MSW, you may become a licensed social worker (LSW) or licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with additional supervised hours.

In an online MSW program, students can expect to complete in-person supervised clinical hours . Hybrid programs may also expect you to attend some in-person classes.

The curriculum for an online master's in social work may include foundation classes, specialization coursework, advanced practice methods courses, and electives.

How Long Does an Online MSW Program Take?

You can complete a traditional online MSW program in four semesters or two academic years if you don't have a bachelor's in social work.

Graduates with a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program may be eligible for an advanced standing program. In that case, the program will take 12-16 months to complete because of the reduced credit requirement.

These are full-time program length estimates. Master's in social work programs typically require that part-time students graduate within four years.

Without a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work

Required course credits, field study requirements.

900-1,200 hours* *Depending on your specialization

With a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work

500-650 hours* *Depending on your specialization

Master's in Social Work Curriculum and Continuing Education

Though your MSW coursework will vary depending on your school and specialization, you can expect to take some version of these core classes during your first year:

  • Social welfare policy
  • Interventions in clinical social work
  • Poverty and inequality
  • Human behavior in the social environment
  • Social work research

In your second year, you'll branch out into more specialized coursework — which will help give you a sense of your preferred area of practice.

Also, keep in mind that most states require social workers to complete continuing education credits to maintain licensure. Check out the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for more details.

Master's degree-holders who want to land even more advanced clinical positions can pursue a doctoral degree in social work .

Careers With an Online Master of Social Work Degree

Social work is a vast profession with a ton of job options.

"Since earning my MSW, I have worked in an outpatient clinic, a group home, treatment for foster care, schools, a university, and my own private therapy practice," said Wendy B. Pitts, LCSW-C. "So: Do your research, decide what you want to do, and take classes that will help you reach that goal."

Earning an online MSW degree will prepare you for a career as a licensed master of social work (LMSW) or licensed clinical social work (LCSW) with the opportunity to work and specialize in different populations.

An MSW can also make you more competitive for jobs outside the social work field.

"The skills and experience social workers bring to the table are becoming more and more valuable across the board," said Dye. "After a decade of practice, I went back to school for an MBA. I wanted to bring my insight as a healthcare social worker to bear on the business side of hospital administration, to see if I could make a bigger systemic impact. And that's exactly what I'm doing."

What is the Average Salary With a Master's in Social Work?

The average annual salary for a graduate from an online MSW program is $28 per hour or $61,000 per year, according to Payscale data from 2024. Several factors influence the average salary range, including location, cost of living index, education, and experience.

An LCSW license requires more supervised clinical hours after graduation and increases your earning potential. The average LCSW salary is $65,950, according to Payscale .

"It's not the most lucrative field, but that's also not why people choose it. This is heart-work," said Kenna Hamm, LMSW. "If you want a six-digit starting salary, you're going to be disappointed. But that doesn't mean you'll be financially insecure, either. I love my job, I'm fulfilling my purpose, and I make enough to take care of my family."

Even though you're probably not pursuing an MSW to get rich, it's still important to consider the return on your investment:

  • Will your starting salary cover student loan payments, rent, and groceries?
  • Will you be able to meet your life goals, as well as your career goals?

Keep in mind that your ROI can also be influenced by further licensing, which is often compensated at a higher rate, said Melissa Goolsaran, LCSW.

Is an MSW Degree Worth It?

The MSW graduates we spoke to want you to know that social work is hard work. You may be paid less than you're worth. You'll learn how to make things happen with limited resources. You'll probably face compassion fatigue, overwork, and burnout.

But they also say that there is nothing more satisfying than empowering your clients and helping them thrive.

“I have never regretted this career. I have never wavered. The privilege of being an ally for my clients and walking alongside them every day is something I could never give up.”

— Kenna Hamm , LMSW and assistant director of the Texas Adoption Center

“It's a job unlike any other. The work that we do matters. After 12 years, I can honestly say that I would do it all over again.”

— Angela Clavijo , LMSW and instructor of social work at Lamar University

“My MSW was worth it. It gives me flexibility to explore different roles. It allows me to balance micro work with macro work. It allows me to have a private practice where I can make my own schedule, have career independence, and make a difference.”

— Melissa Goolsaran , LMSW

“I would tell anyone who wants to work in this field to get an MSW. Because if you do reach a point in your career where you want to make more money, you can eventually quadruple your pay by going into private practice.”

— Sue English , MSW, LCSW, CADC

CSWE Accreditation for Social Work Programs

It's vital that you choose an MSW program that is CSWE-accredited*, for three reasons:

  • Quality Assurance: Accreditation ensures that you are receiving a high-quality education in your field.
  • Professional Standing: A degree in an accredited program is a qualifying requirement for licensure as a social worker.
  • Job Opportunities: Graduates from accredited schools can be confident their training will meet job requirements and standards -- giving them more mobility and access to job opportunities nationwide.

*Note: All of the online programs we have ranked on this page are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), which is the only accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) for graduate programs in social work.

Social Work Licensing and Certifications

All 50 states and the District of Columbia require social workers to graduate from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and pass a licensure exam . Additional social work requirements vary by state .

Licenses available to MSW graduates include:

  • Licensed master of social work
  • Licensed master social worker, advanced generalist
  • Licensed clinical social worker
  • Licensed social worker, administration

The Difference Between an Online MSW vs. a Traditional MSW Program

There are unique benefits to receiving a master's in social work online or in person. In each case, you graduate with the same education and options for licensure. Online learning offers more flexibility and potentially a lower total cost when you factor in travel expenses.

Online students must have the computer technology to meet the program requirements, attend lectures for synchronous classes, and complete in-person fieldwork.

Prevent Compassion Fatigue

We get it: You're fired up. You want to change the world. But social work is physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding work. Have you thought about how to prepare yourself for the long haul?

"It's so common for social workers to experience compassion fatigue and to feel exploited by the systems they have to operate within," said English. "These are problems you need to anticipate and prepare for ahead of time. As you empower your clients to set healthy boundaries and prioritize their own well-being, you must commit to doing the same for yourself."

What's the difference between a Masters by Coursework and a Masters by Research?

A  Masters by Coursework  is a professional qualification involving the study of a specified set of core units and a selection of eligible elective units. Undertaking a coursework program will mean that you will attend classes, complete assignments and sit exams where applicable. Some Masters by Coursework also require the completion of a minor thesis as part of the course. Dependent on the course, part-time and online study options are available. For more information, please see our  Postgraduate Study at ECU  web page. A  Masters by Research  involves the submission of a completed thesis based on an independent research project. Students studying a Masters by Research work independently with the support of a supervisor and the School. Students may be required to attend units to help expand skills in the area of research. For more information, please see our Research Degree  web page.

Master by Coursework vs. Master by Research: Which One to Choose?

Yogi at Monash University graduation ceremony. Source: Monash University

“In preparing for your future academic degree, prospective Master’s degree students should comprehend various academic and non-academic aspects that will be experienced at the study destination, including the pathways of graduate studies.

In this article, Yogi Saputra Mahmud (Content Director for Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands) will help you understand more about the differences between Master by Coursework vs. Master by Research, as well as some advice to select a pathway of graduate studies.”

Before starting your initial journey as a master’s degree student overseas, it is essential to explore the programs you wish to take. University websites will always become the best source of information for you to examine the desired courses. For instance, before I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) , I started my investigation by visiting several university websites all over the globe. Ultimately, I chose Monash University as my study destination as it offers a very unique course pathway that supported my future career.

At Monash University, I also experienced working as a Student Engagement Officer who helped students in their course progression. At that time, I realised that different universities might have different types of graduate studies offered to prospective students. Some Master degree programs are specifically designed for a full-coursework, a full-research, and coursework with a partial research pathway during the study, which will be exemplified further below.

Master by Coursework

On its website, Edith Cowan University outlines that A Masters by Coursework “is a professional qualification involving the study of a specified set of core units and a selection of eligible elective units” ( ECU, 2019 ). In other words, Master by Coursework students are required to enrol in classes that belong to compulsory units and choose several elective units for a certain number of credit hours throughout their study. During the study, you are also expected to complete assignments/projects/exams specified in each class or unit.

An example of Masters by Full Coursework pathway that I will illustrate here is Master of Business at Monash University . As an industry-focused graduate program, Master of Business enormously creates a professionally developed and socially responsible business practitioner. Therefore, the full coursework type allows you to immerse yourself in practical understanding to become an effective business practitioner.

As shown in the picture above, a Master of Business course requires its students to complete 96 credit points consisting of three major parts, including Advanced Preparatory, Mastery Knowledge, and Application Studies. Students will have to take core units and some elective units based on their interests in each part. In my perspective, the full coursework type will allow students to scrutinise theoretical and practical understandings in a particular field. Furthermore, it also enables students to tailor their expertise in their area based on their selection of core and elective units throughout their academic journey.

Master by Coursework + Partial Research

Besides the full coursework pathway, some Master’s degree programs also offer a partial research stream as an alternative pathway in the Masters by Coursework program. Usually, the partial research stream requires the students to complete a minor thesis comprising less than 15,000 words.

There are several requirements that you must fulfil to take this pathway. For instance, I personally took this pathway when I was studying at Monash University. Regarding this, the Master of TESOL course offers a Master by Coursework for prospective students. However, this course also has an alternative research pathway for those who achieve satisfactory results (75 of 100) from the first to the third semester. Since other courses may have different requirements, you are advised to check the university website or the course handbook to investigate them further.

As can be identified in the picture below, Master of TESOL at Monash University offers either a Master of Full Coursework or Master of Coursework + a partial research pathway. I believe that both types provide different advantages for prospective students. In this case, students who prefer a Master of Full Coursework type will have a more comprehensive experience in teaching and other professional development programs. Similarly, those who select a partial research pathway will improve their research experience and capacity, which can become an essential milestone for their future academic trajectory at Ph.D.

Master by Research

In a Master by Research program, students are required to submit “a completed thesis based on an independent research project” ( ECU, 2019 ). Furthermore, students will engage with a research supervisor throughout the completion of their research project. In this graduate study type, students will not have to attend any course units (core or elective units). However, there might be some preliminary classes to support their understanding of their research project, including classes in research methodology and statistics. Therefore, it is essential to explore the course progression and requirement in the university website or course handbook.

An example that I will illustrate here is the Master of Engineering Science (Research) at Monash University. This course is offered with two years and four years duration for full-time and part-time study respectively. Regarding this, students have to complete a research project in the areas of chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and computer systems, materials, and mechanical engineering. In each area of research, students will also be able to explore several subthemes that they are interested in. Ultimately, students are required to submit a thesis of not more than 50,000 words to complete their Master by Research degree.

In the other Master by Research courses, students will also find areas of research that can be selected as the theme of your research project. In addition, communication between yourself as the prospective student and a prospective supervisor is also necessary to ensure that the suitability of the research project, as well as the approval from the prospective supervisor to supervise you throughout the academic program. You can find the list of prospective supervisors by entering the following keyword in the Google search box: “find a supervisor + University name + Faculty/Department name.”

Which One to Choose?

As stated earlier, each type of graduate studies has its particular characteristics. In this regard, Masters by Full Coursework pathway allow you to deepen theoretical and practical insights about a specific area of knowledge. For instance, a Master by Full Coursework pathway at Master of TESOL course allows the students to immerse in teaching and classroom supervision, further supporting the key developments of becoming an effective teacher after completing the study. In other words, a Master by Full Coursework pathway is suitable for those who are planning to have a future career as a professional/expert in a particular field (e.g., business practitioner, education practitioner, and many more).

However, some Masters by Full Coursework pathway also offers a partial research pathway for those planning to extend their understanding of research. The partial research along with Masters by Full Research pathways are essential for students who would like to pursue a Doctoral degree since most Ph.D. programs require their applicants to have prior experience in completing a substantial amount of research in the form of a Master’s thesis. Furthermore, those who intend to become researchers, analysts, and university lecturers will also benefit from taking these pathways since the professions require them to engage in rigorous research and other academic projects.

Main Takeaways

It is important for you to explore the available pathways in the Master’s degree course that you desire. Every pathway at the graduate level has its own characteristics and strengths that ultimately affect your overall academic trajectory. Moreover, selecting a particular Master’s degree pathway should be based on the future career that you want to have.

Watch nimble the mixed-breed dog demolish the 2024 westminster masters agility course in under 30 seconds, share this article.

Nimble lived up to its name this weekend.

The 2024 Westminster Dog Show is here, and as we’ve seen in years past, the Masters Agility competition is thrilling as heck (and sometimes, it’s heartbreaking ).

This year? We got some history. Nimble is a mixed-breed dog from Maryland, but it’s known as an All-American Dog in the competition (and they’re allowed in the Agility contest). And what Nimble did was astounding on the way to becoming the first All-American to win the competition: Nimble ran the course in under 30 seconds with a time of 28.76 seconds. WOW!

Check this flawless run out from the eventual winner:

WATCH: 'Nimble' the dog wins Westminster Masters Agility Championship with blazing run

masters with coursework

If there was ever a name that fit a dog, it was "Nimble."

On Saturday, the All-American dog from Ellicott City, Maryland became the first mixed-breed dog to win the Masters Agility Championship at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in a blazing run that electrified the crowd at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

A 6-year-old female, Nimble completed the obstacle course in 28.76 seconds, which was the third-fastest time in the 11-year history of the event and only the fifth time that a dog has completed the course in fewer than 30 seconds. The obstacle course includes various ramps, agility poles and jumps that each contestant must work through, with the fastest time winning.

In all, there were 351 competitors for the agility championship, held over two rounds. Nimble beat out the field of 26 All-American dogs, advancing to the final round of 50 competitors. Nimble, the winner of the 12-inch height division, also became the first-ever Masters Agility champion to come from the 12-inch category.

Cynthia Hornor of Ellicott City, Maryland is Nimble’s owner and handler, leading Nimble through the various obstacles on the course.

And while it was Nimble’s first agility championship, this marked the second consecutive agility title for Hornor, whose border collie, Truant, won in 2023 with a time of 28.68 seconds – just 0.08 seconds quicker than Nimble's time.

2024 PGA Championship weather forecast: Rain and thunderstorms likely to delay play, soften Valhalla course

Forecasts suggest another wet week in louisville for the 106th pga championship.

2024-pga-championship-weather-warning-g.jpg

April showers bring May ... showers? They will this week at the 2024 PGA Championship as soggy conditions are expected to engulf Valhalla Golf Club for the year's second major championship. Already playing north of 7,600 yards, Valhalla will only play longer as thunderstorms and scattered showers roll through the area throughout the week.

Rain has already messed with the typical cadence of pre-tournament preparation as Tuesday thunderstorms forced competitors to cram for the examination that is Valhalla early in the morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms have continued with the tournament set to begin Thursday, and it appears as if they will factor into play through the 72 holes in Louisville.

"I'm glad I came and played last week, Sunday, Monday," said Justin Thomas. "Just not only for my own preparation standpoint but just with how the weather potentially looks."

Round 1 should receive a reprieve from the precipitation and allow all 156 players to (hopefully) finish their first 18 holes. They will need to if the PGA Championship is going to stay on track as another low-pressure system is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms into the region Friday afternoon and into Saturday morning. These showers should begin to wane Saturday afternoon and lead into a dry Sunday where a champion will be crowned.

2024 PGA Championship weather forecast

Inclement weather is nothing new for the PGA Championship as heavy showers poured upon Oak Hill in the third round just last year. Players remained on the golf course, and it proved to be a crucial Moving Day as 36-hole leader Scottie Scheffler shot 73 while Brooks Koepka (the ultimate winner) shot the round of the day with a 66. Koepka ultimately clipped Scheffler by two at the end of the tournament.

Playing in wet and soggy conditions is a bit of an acquired taste; it does play into the hands of those who are plenty long off the tee. This year's leaderboard has the potential to draw comparisons to last year when heavy drivers of the golf ball like Koepka, Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy and Kurt Kitayama all finished inside the top 10.

"It's all very right in front of you," Thomas said. "You just hit a driver really far and really straight and hit your irons well. That seems to be the theme here."

Climate protesters disrupt Westminster dog show agility course. ‘No dogs on a dead planet.’

The group Extinction Rebellion interrupted the Westminster Masters Agility Championship twice Saturday night in Queens. The agility competition is part of the 2024 Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Extinction Rebellion

  • Amy Kuperinsky | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Some unscheduled humans entered the agility competition at the 2024 Westminster Kennel Club dog show .

It was a night for dogs darting through obstacles, but climate protesters ran onto the canine course twice at the Westminster Masters Agility Championship at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens Saturday.

“NO DOGS ON A DEAD PLANET,” read the bright orange banners they unfurled during the taping of the show for Fox .

The climate activists were booed by some in the crowd and swiftly yanked out of the arena.

Before being detained by security and handcuffed by police, two of the protesters told NJ Advance Media they represented Extinction Rebellion NYC .

Extinction Rebellion , founded in the United Kingdom, uses protests and appearances at public events to draw attention to the global climate crisis .

In March, the group drew attention for a protest during a performance of the Broadway play “An Enemy of the People” starring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli.

Mar Kelly was one of the first two protesters to disrupt the New York dog show Saturday night.

Kelly, 60, who grew up in Boonton, told NJ Advance Media that she’s an environmental scientist.

She ran into the middle of the dog agility course with Meredith Faltin of Jackson Heights, Queens to jeers from the crowd.

“I love the dog show, I watch it on TV, I go to it,” Kelly said. “And we disrupt things we love.”

Faltin told Westminster officials and arena security that they were there to “sound the alarm” about the climate crisis.

Since the event was not broadcast live and the protesters knew their stunt would likely be cut out of the show before it airs Sunday afternoon on Fox , Kelly told NJ Advance Media that fellow Extinction Rebellion members would post photos and video of the action on social media.

Minutes later, two more protesters from the group ran from the audience into the agility course with a second banner. They laid down on the ground before being dragged away by Westminster staff and security.

Dog shows, which focus on the beauty of animals rather than on their essential role in ecosystems or on their survival, are a poignant illustration of this. — Extinction Rebellion NYC 🌎 (@XR_NYC) May 12, 2024

It wasn’t long before images of the protests turned up on the group’s X (formerly Twitter) account.

“We humans are less concerned about vulnerable wildlife than we are about pet dogs,” Extinction Rebellion said in an X thread. “All animals are mutually dependent, including humans, and humans, too, will suffer as animals become increasingly vulnerable and head towards extinction.”

“Dog shows, which focus on the beauty of animals rather than on their essential role in ecosystems or on their survival, are a poignant illustration of this,” they continued.

One video clip the group shared showed a dog show staffer tackling a protester.

“No matter how brutal the response is, we’ll keep pushing,” their message said.

At least nine police officers responded to the scene. The four climate protesters were led away in handcuffs.

While the traditional Westminster show, which starts Monday , is about breed conformation, which would be the “beauty” part, the agility portion of competition is about speed and precision.

In that segment of the 148th Westminster Kennel Club dog show , dogs navigate weave poles, jump through a hoop and careen through a tunnel as part of the timed obstacle course.

Truant, a border collie , won the Westminter agility championship in 2023 with his owner, Cynthia Hornor of Ellicott City, Maryland , in an impressive 28.68 seconds .

Like agility, the Westminster Masters Obedience Championship , which happened earlier Saturday, hinges on an airtight bond between dog and owner.

Zayne, a border collie from Caseyville, Illinois, and his owner Kim Berkley won the obedience competition.

The winner of the 2024 agility competition will be announced during the broadcast , which airs Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET on Fox .

Westminster Kennel Club dog show will name its best in show Tuesday, May 14 live on FS1 (the final runs from 7:30 to about 11 p.m.).

The 2023 best in show winner was Buddy Holly , a 6-year-old petit basset griffon Vendéen .

Max Homa is finally having his Masters breakthrough

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 12: Max Homa of the United States plays a shot on the 14th hole during the continuation of the first round of the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 12, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Warren Little/Getty Images)

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Max Homa walked up to the beginning of the most famous three holes in golf, alone, unconcerned with the legend behind him. Unconcerned with the surroundings or the stage.

Back on the 10th green, Tiger Woods and Jason Day took their time reading putts and finishing the hole. But Homa had his par. He had his co-lead at the Masters. So for a full two minutes, Homa walked ahead, up the hill to the start of Amen Corner.

This time was going to be different. This time, he was going to worry about himself.

He thought back to his journal scribblings from Thursday night, a habit he’s been focusing on the past year. He writes what he’s grateful for and mental goals for the day. And Thursday night he wrote a simple mantra.

However good I am is however good I am.

Go back two years ago to Scotland. Homa was living his dream. The Southern California kid who spent years waiting along the ropes to get high fives from his idol, Woods, was paired with The Cat for the first time. He was giddy. And of course, that first time wasn’t in a casual environment. It was at the Open Championship. At St. Andrews. The best player of his era at the home of golf for perhaps the final time.

Homa missed the cut.

He shot 73 and 72 to miss out on the weekend by a shot. Homa only spoke glowingly about that experience and the magical moment of standing back with Matt Fitzpatrick to watch Woods walk Swilcan Bridge on 18 to a standing ovation. But playing next to his hero, Homa provided just another data point in a long-building set of Homa’s struggling to put himself in the mix on golf’s biggest stages.

Max Homa has never been here before, 6-under par at the Masters and tied with Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler for the lead. The 33-year-old has risen up the golfing ranks the past four years to go from fighting for a PGA Tour card to one of the biggest stars in golf. He’s won big tournaments like the Genesis Invitational and Farmers Insurance Open. He broke out in a U.S. Presidents Cup win and was a rare bright spot in a Ryder Cup loss. He’s likable and cool and funny. He cracks jokes on podcasts and does on-course interviews during rounds. The golf world roots for Homa.

But he’s never been in contention at a major. Not even close. Not until this weekend.

masters with coursework

There are two ways that good golfers without a major get discussed. There are the chokers and those who don’t even compete. Homa has been the latter. He is the No. 11 golfer in the world, according to Official World Golf Ranking, yet he’s never been better than tied for 11th at a major through 36 holes. OK, that doesn’t quite sell it. He’s only been better than 35th halfway through a major twice . When he was tied for 11th at last year’s Open Championship, he was still nine shots back. The reality is Homa has been somebody who doesn’t show up on these stages. He has never even been in the mix.

That’s a key differentiation to make, though. Because Homa is not a choker. Homa is becoming one of the more clutch golfers on the PGA Tour. He thrived in big moments to go 4-0 at the Presidents Cup. At the 2023 Ryder Cup, as much of the U.S. team looked flat, he went 3-1-1 to be the Americans’ best player. His signature win at Riviera in 2021 came via playoff. His 2022 win at the Wells Fargo came with a Sunday 68 while second-placed Keegan Bradley shot 72. Last year at Torrey Pines, a Sunday 66 gave Homa his sixth PGA Tour win.

Majors, though? He gets too excited. He gets jacked up. He loves this stuff, the kind of fan whose first golf memory was being 6 and watching Woods walk up 18 to win his first green jacket. Sometimes passion is good. Sometimes it costs you.

“I just think I get here and I try too hard,” Homa said before last year’s U.S. Open, before another missed cut.

“Some parts of me that I really like is I’m a perfectionist and it makes me work really, really hard. I’m very diligent. But that same part, it’s like a double-edged sword. I get in these things and I can’t seem to separate — I can’t seem to understand that it’s OK to make bogeys and it’s OK to mess up.”

At Augusta, Homa learned how to mess up.

Homa put his drive way left and into the fairway bunkers on No. 5, one of the more dangerous spots at this historic course. That’s bogey territory. Try to do too much, and it’s double-bogey territory. Homa was 7-under par at this point and tied for the lead, but Augusta was vicious all day, sustained 20 mph winds rendering risks foolish. The old Homa would have tried to get that shot back with a risky approach into No. 5’s tricky green.

“Trying to get every ounce back doesn’t really work,” Homa said, “and I’ve tried that.”

So Homa laid up to 147 yards away. He pulled out a wedge for his third shot and stuck it 8 feet from the hole, and he made the par putt. He saved the hole.

It should not be a surprise that Homa appears to be having his major weekend breakthrough. He has one of those beautiful, athletic swings when his arms go out wide on the follow-through and his upper body tilts back. So when he shot that first-round 67 — finishing it early Friday morning — it was a reminder of that talent. He birdied 3, 5, 8 and 9 with strong but unaggressive shots rewarded by beautiful putting. He responded to a bogey on 12 with a birdie on 13 thanks to a great pitch. And on 17 — one of the hardest holes on the course — he landed a 157-yard iron shot inches from the pin. It was one of four birdies on 17 all round.

“As solid as he hits it, it’s just a matter of time before he starts winning in bunches,” Woods said. “I saw it up front. He doesn’t really mis-hit shots. That’s something you just have to do around this golf course.”

But Homa’s being here, tied atop the leaderboard, is because of Round 2. As those winds eliminated golfer after golfer from the top of the leaderboard, Homa played steady golf. He committed to his plan, put himself in good positions and saved pars. After going 2-under on the front nine, he had one bogey on 11 and finished with seven straight pars. Only one player shot in the 60s all day.

“That was about as happy as you could be to be walking off of a golf course,” Homa said. “That was so hard.”

He’s here, and getting here has always been the problem. Now, he can show the world who he really is.

A year ago, Homa’s caddie Joe Greiner told Golf Magazine, “When he’s around the lead, he’s incredible. He doesn’t choke. But there’s still this holdover, early in the week, where he needs Thursday and Friday to validate himself. To remember he belongs.”

Homa can now enter Saturday at the Masters fully aware that he belongs. He can write in his journal that he’s in the final groups in a major. He might write that he’s grateful for the people around him. His wife, Lacey. His 17-month-old son, Cam. His friends back at the house. “I have a wife that does not let me gloat,” he said, “and I have friends back at the house that will just want to hear about what Tiger did today.”

These people ensure that he’ll leave this Masters no different from how he was at the beginning of the week. Being 6-under isn’t going to change anything this Friday night.

“I’ll probably change a diaper or two, and wake up tomorrow and go back to work.”

Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree: A Guide

Learn more about what it takes to earn your MSW degree and pursue advanced roles in the social work field.

[Featured image] A young woman wearing a burnt orange sweater sits in a room filled with plants on her laptop.

When you're interested in becoming a licensed clinical social worker or pursuing an advanced role in the social work field, you will first need to earn your Master of Social Work (MSW). The graduate degree prepares you for state licensure, so you can begin working with people in various ways: individually, in groups, or as a community.

Let’s discuss the MSW degree, what it takes to earn one, and the career options you can pursue once you graduate.

What is an MSW degree?

A Master of Social Work degree is advanced education you can pursue once you complete your bachelor’s degree . Some students who enroll in an MSW degree program may have first earned their Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree , though that’s not necessary. You can major in any number of subjects before deciding to pursue your MSW.

However, some programs combine the BSW and MSW to shorten the length of time it takes to earn both—from six years to five. If you have not yet declared a major but are interested in earning your MSW, it might be worth exploring whether your college or university has such a program.

Types of MSW degrees programs

There are a few different program options when it comes to earning your MSW degree:

Traditional: This MSW degree program is designed to take two years of full-time study and typically incorporates foundational coursework in social work with more specialized topics, like children, young adults, and families. You will likely be expected to complete up to 70 credits and around 900 to 1200 field education hours.

Accelerated: A more intensive option, this type of program takes around 12-16 months to finish rather than 24. Not all MSW programs offer an accelerated track, so it’s a good idea to research 'accelerated MSW programs' for more info about the ones that do.

Advanced standing: If you’ve earned a BSW degree, you may qualify for an advanced standing MSW program, which applies some of the coursework you’ve already completed toward your MSW degree. As such, you may skip over the first-year general coursework and earn your degree in less time.

Clinical: Often considered a specialization you can select when earning your MSW, the clinical social work track prepares you to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) after graduation by emphasizing practical coursework, such as behavioral assessment and intervention techniques.

Dual: A dual MSW program allows you to earn two degrees, your MSW and another master’s degree, such as a Master of Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) in Nonprofit Leadership. You’ll likely need to apply to both programs, but when you finish the requirements—which are designed to overlap—you will graduate with two degrees in less time.

Length of time + cost

Depending on the type of program you enroll in, and your ability to attend either part-time or full-time, the MSW degree takes between one and three years .

Students enrolled in a traditional MSW degree program can expect to spend their first year completing coursework and their second year taking specialized coursework and completing their field education hours. Students who enroll in a three-year program often do so to continue working part-time, stretch their general coursework over two years (instead of one) and spend the final year completing their field education hours.

Types of coursework

MSW degree programs tend to break down coursework into a general first-year overview and a specialized second-year concentration. (If you enroll in an advanced standing MSW program, you can expect to skip the first-year coursework.) Let’s go over the kinds of courses you might encounter.

First year:

Social work and social welfare foundations

Social welfare policies

Social work research

Diversity and social justice

Human behavior

Human development

Second year:

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Medical health disorders and diagnosis

Child welfare policy

Motivational interviewing technique

Substance use policy

Advanced social welfare policy

Concentration

Master of Social Work programs generally offer at least a few concentrations, which are areas of specialization that tailor your education to your career. You can learn more about a facet of social work, which may help prepare you for a career in that area.

Sample concentrations:

Clinical work

Mental health

Children, youth, and families

Community organization and development

Community administration

As you research MSW programs, take time to find out about the concentrations they offer and how they align with your larger professional goals. If you’re interested in working in a specific aspect of social work, choosing a related concentration might make sense, and looking for programs that focus on that area.

Field education requirement

All MSW students must complete field education—an internship or practicum—designed to give them professional experience. The requirements differ by program, but all Master of Social Work students must complete a one-year placement, though the number of hours may be reduced for advanced-standing students. Make sure to check your program’s specifications so you understand the full requirements needed to graduate.

What can you do with an MSW?

With an MSW and either certification or licensure, you can pursue several social work roles and more advanced administrative roles. Social work and its related specialties show strong growth potential over the next decade. Social worker roles are expected to grow by 12 percent, while substance abuse and mental health counselor roles are expected to grow by 23 percent, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) [ 1 , 2 ].

PhDs and DSWs

If you’d like to achieve a terminal degree , or the highest degree possible in the field of social work, there are two options to explore once you earn your MSW.

A PhD in social work tends to provide a more academic approach and will prepare you to conduct advanced research in your area of specialization. A Doctor of Social Work (DSW) , on the other hand, is the highest clinical degree you can achieve if you’re interested in the practice of social work and applied research.

Which MSW degree program is right for me?

The right MSW degree program is the one that will help you achieve your personal and professional goals. It’s also important to evaluate your resources, such as the cost of a program and the time you have to complete it. For example, if you'd like to continue working, you may want to look for three-year programs rather than accelerated or traditional options.

Accreditation

Unlike accreditation agencies that oversee regional or national accreditation for higher education , only the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) can provide accreditation for social work programs. MSW programs should list whether they have CSWE accreditation somewhere on their website, usually under the program details page. Verifying that information will be important in ensuring you receive a quality social work education. You can also look at CSWE’s Directory of Accredited Programs .

Spend time perusing each program's general, specialized, and elective coursework, and consider how they align with your larger career goals. Will you learn the fundamentals you need in order to begin a successful career in social work? Will you be able to access electives relevant to your interests?

Field education

Considering the emphasis placed on field education, it can help to see where many current students at each program complete their hours. If you want to work in a certain area, such as addiction counseling, but the program you’re considering doesn’t have a strong placement record in that area, then it might be best to reach out to the program director and get more information—or explore other options.

Many people enter social work for the meaning and value they can offer individuals or communities, but it’s still reasonable to want a return on your investment. Researching each program’s costs—as well as the financial assistantship they may be able to offer—can help you weigh the overall price versus your potential earning power after graduation. Many schools also publish employment data, so you may be able to get a clearer idea about where graduates go on to work after leaving the program.

Online vs. in-person

Several MSW programs are now offered online or as a hybrid, which may provide greater flexibility in terms of your course schedule and even make it easier to continue working while earning your degree—a helpful way to offset the overall cost of your education.
