RUMOR: Captain America 4 Might Introduce a Superior Material

Kingdom of the planet of the apes ending, explained, deadpool & wolverine director has some choice words for the mcu.

Even though Spider-Man has been lent back to Marvel, Sony Pictures is still intent on making its own live-action Spider-Verse. Sadly, however, the company has been doing it without Spider-Man himself, and the resulting movies haven’t been all that good. Morbius was the nadir of the ‘SSU’ ( Sony Spider-Man Universe ), with its box office performance being the worst of any Marvel movie since the catastrophic Fant4stic .

RELATED: Morbius Coming Back to Theaters

However, this movie about the living vampire has made enough waves to get a second go-around in theaters. Why? Probably because it’s become all the internet’s been able to talk about. There were memes poking fun at it before, during, and after its release. Everything from its star to its poster was fair game. With that in mind, here are some of the funniest Morbius memes.

5 Trillions & Trillions

Sure, it’s easy to mock Morbius ' meager return on investment directly, but why go for the simple route when there’s a more interesting ironic one available? The one that says Morbius is so unpopular that it goes beyond zero and ends up being hyper-popular . Its movie theatre tickets aren't worthless, they're priceless! Keep them safe, or they'll get snatched up faster than a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Not only is it selling ALL the tickets, but it’s also making ALL the money! All those other movies might be able to make millions of dollars, but Morbius is earning trillions ! Avatar ? Avengers: Endgame ? They might as well be earning chump change next to the living vampire's success (or lack thereof).

4 Morbius vs The Batman

Why waste time on competition like The Batman when there’s a better movie about THE bat-man ? In all honesty, back around the time of both movies’ release, Robert Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader was the better choice. All three hours of it . Fans knew that too, and made their opinions known, be it through social media posts, reviews, or memes about other superheroes . Morbius may have had Michael Keaton, but it wasn't sure why it had him. Was he the same guy as the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming ? No one seemed to know , not even Sony themselves.

RELATED: Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Mod Adds Morbius as a Playable Character

The Batman wasn’t perfect. It was lengthy, occasionally derivative, and a bit cringe-inducing at points. Yet, compared to the SSU's bloodsucker-based effort, it was still the better dark superhero counterpart to Spider-Man: No Way Home . Not that it was the only alternative option audiences had at movie theatres at the time. There was another movie around that had crowds racing to movie theaters.

3 Poster Memes

Give people a split-person poster, and they’re going to riff on it. There’s just something inherently funny about taking two completely different entities and making them two sides of the same coin. Morbius obviously wasn’t the first piece of media to illustrate that, but it is the most recent. It's even been used to reinvigorate similar projects with Jekyll & Hyde concepts .

No stranger to internet memes, the official KFC Twitter account got in on the fun with the Colonel up there, but what if there was another purveyor of processed provisions that could give Morbius the shot in the arm it needs? The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has been in development hell for a while. Jared Leto might be the proverbial grease it needs to get moving. If he did, it wouldn’t be the worst thing he’s been involved in.

2 Jared Leto

Speaking of Jared Leto, he’s a polarizing actor. With his off-camera behavior, his ho-hum band, and his bizarre method acting, he’s given people plenty of reason to shove him aside. Requiem for a Dream was good, but that was made 20 years ago now. People are often judged by their most recent works instead of their best achievements, which, in Leto’s case, hasn’t been great .

RELATED: Morbius: The Most Nonsensical Parts of the Movie

Still, through Morbius , Leto has managed to do something that no other actor has managed to do; be in both the worst DC Movie and the worst marvel movie . His take on the Joker was one of, if not the most unpopular take on the Clown Prince of Crime ever. Then again, Suicide Squad was bad enough in general that it needed a reboot with a new director and cast years later. Sony might have to take some notes from that movie, but, in the meantime, everything is perfectly balanced and as it should be .

1 Morbin’ Time

Finally, it’s the meme everyone’s been waiting for. As a regular guy, Morbius can’t do much. But when he shifts into his vampire side, he gets strong enough to take on hordes of generic mooks. Like a certain squad of rangers who were known for their might and ability to morph, stand back, it’s Morbin’ Time !

In fact, it’s been Morbin’ Time for a while now. The phrase has been popping up everywhere, be it on every screenshot of the movie itself, or even in rival movies like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . It’s become something of a modern urban legend where people think it’s an actual line from the movies. But it isn’t . The actual Morbius movie is too grim and serious to have fun stuff like that. One might even say that it’s got the morbs .

Morbius is in movie theaters now.

'Morbius' Is Finally out and the Internet Is Abuzz With Memes

Callie (Carlos) Cadorniga - Author

Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius.

After more than two years of delays, Morbius finally hit theaters on April 1. No, that isn't an April Fools' joke. Originally scheduled for release in July 2020, the Marvel film has been delayed several times throughout the past few years. The film finally premiered, albeit to poor critical reception, and with a 16 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes , one has to wonder if the wait was at all worth it. One thing's for sure, though. The memes for the film are all too hilarious.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease. He attempts to cure his illness through transgenic vampirism, but this causes him to gain superhuman abilities and a thirst for blood.

The film has been lambasted by critics, who call the special effects outdated and the mid-credits scene outlandish, even by Marvel standards.

Whether you love or hate the film, there's no doubt that Morbius provides excellent meme fodder.

Here are some of our favorite memes about Morbius.

A record for jared leto..

Morbius star Jared Leto previously appeared in 2016's Suicide Squad as a divisive version of the Joker. According to one Twitter user , Jared's record of poor comic book film adaptations continues in his stint with Marvel.

Very few people enjoy coming across spoilers. No one would have wanted Spider-Man: No Way Home or Avengers: Endgame spoiled for them. But when it comes to Morbius, we may not mind a plot point or two in advance.

Fans of the movie are using "#MorbiusSweep" to show their support for the film in the midst of its poor critical reception. In response, a Twitter user made some "adjustments" to Morbius' Rotten Tomatoes score and made it the first film to exceed 100 percent! What an epic turnaround!

11 best Morbius memes as film opens to poor reviews

11 best Morbius memes as film opens to poor reviews

The hotly anticipated Morbius movie hit cinemas this week – and well, people weren't impressed at all.

Produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel , Morbius i s based on the popular Marvel Comics. The movie follows the story of biochemist Michael Morbius, played by Jared Leto , who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease. When one of his experiments goes terribly wrong, Morbius turns into a vampire.

While very few praised the movie, others did not hold back with their savagely bad reviews. The Independent brutally slammed the film a "shameless corporate desperation."

"It can't be described as the wild, untethered disaster that some were secretly hoping for, either, because that would imply some level of creative risk," they said. "It's more a two-hour prelude to a post-credit scene, which happens to be one of the most sloppily written teases ever committed to screen. Morbius also doesn't have an ending. It simply cuts to the credits when everyone's had enough."

The Times were just as harsh, rating Morbius one star. They called it an "appalling vampire snooze-fest" that "deserves a stake through its heart."

Meanwhile, The Guardian also gave it a single star and diminished it to a "ludicrously pointless Jekyll and Hyde vampire-monster yarn."

"It really is an amazingly pointless and dumb film," they penned.

The movie scored a mere 16 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes too, with critics far and wide offering their unfiltered opinions.

Chelsea Steiner of The Mary Sue said: "The film's plot is lackluster, and there's no humor, no charm, and no warmth to be found. It's rare to see a film so devoid of style and ambition, that slugs along like a direct-to-video Underworld sequel."

While Nate Adams of The Only Critic kept it short and sweet, saying it "sucks the fun out of everything."

Morbin' Time Explained: How This Morbius Meme Birthed A Monster

Morbius in Morbius

With "Morbius" finally finding some measure of success as the number one movie on Netflix, it's time to look back at the meme culture that spawned shortly after the film's theatrical release. Though panned by critics and fans alike, "Morbius" lived on in the hearts of many through the birth of internet-wide inside jokes that often revolved around the phrase "It's Morbin' Time." The terrible nature of the film's writing and direction became a source of inspiration for the superhero-loving community to create some of the funniest memes of 2022. However, despite the overwhelming social media notoriety, "Morbius" failed to understand the true reason behind the memes, birthing a monster in the process.

The origin of this meme would have to be researched by experts in human psychology to get an exact answer as to why this took off like it did; however, there are specific moments in the "Morbius" timeline that point toward a conclusion that may just satisfy your hunger for knowledge (or artificial blood, if you're Morbius). Most importantly, it all culminated in a desperate attempt by the studio to make a few Morbillion dollars at the box office.

It's Morbin' Time

For the uninitiated, the viral phrase in question is based on the Thing's signature "it's clobberin' time" line from the "Fantastic Four" comics. The thought process behind it is not exactly logical, but that's exactly what makes it funny. "Morbius" generated an ongoing online joke, where "fans" created fake aspects of the film, starting with the catchphrase that is actually never uttered by Jared Leto's character. The current assumption is that the original meme came from a viral tweet that used the words "It's Morbin' Time," which then rapidly evolved into an entire lexicon of words and phrases to refer to the film and its titular superhero. A number of other memes were born out of this context, including taglines like "morbing around" or "time to morb." In a full circle moment, Leto eventually referenced the meme in a video he posted to Twitter  that had him reading a screenplay titled "Morbius 2: It's Morbin' Time."

The important aspect of this meme is that it's mostly derived from people who had never seen the film. In fact, some people used the term (and its variations) when they had no intention of seeing in the first place — they just thought it was funny. This conundrum led to a massive misunderstanding by the studio behind the film, which squandered the opportunity to capitalize on the unique situation.

#MorbiusSweep

In typical Sony fashion, the movie studio misunderstood the resounding discussion surrounding "Morbius" as an indicator that people actually wanted to see it (in theaters, no less). In early June, Sony re-released the film in theaters in response to the pop culture phenomenon, but it hilariously underperformed . By giving into the memes, Sony inadvertently proved to the fans that their intentions were just as soulless as "Morbius" itself. In fact, a new joke started circling that had fans telling Sony on social media that they were busy on that weekend and that they should release it again. Despite people exclaiming a #MorbiusSweep was bound for awards season, fans really just wanted the "Morbius" world to crumble as a result of their memes.

The ending to the "It's Morbin' Saga" is not all sad, however. Upon arriving on Netflix, "Morbius" proudly stamped its place as the number one film on the streaming platform. It may still be one of the worst films of the year , but "Morbius" continues to be a healthy source for memes to this day. Or if you want to see Matt Smith dance like a madman for whatever reason.

We Might Have Successfully Memed “Morbius” Back Into Theaters

It's Morbin' time. Again.

BuzzFeed News Reporter

Jared Leto in Morbius

Morbius instantly became a meme when it first premiered, purely because it is a joy to mock online, and two months later, memes might have revived the "living vampire" movie.

The Marvel film's release was delayed six different times before finally coming out in the shadow of Spider-Man: No Way Home , a massive critical and box office hit. In contrast, Morbius was a flop both commercially and with critics, but jokes about no one seeing it, fake phrases — "it's Morbin time" — and irony online have become the film's biggest successes.

Now, as @ERCboxoffice first reported , Morbius screenings have been added to more than 1,000 theaters for the weekend of June 3.

Sony did not respond to a request for comment about the movie's theatrical return and whether it was directly related to the online meme machine sparked by the film.

From the first trailer for Morbius , which stars Oscar winner Jared Leto as a doctor who infuses himself with bat DNA that grants him magical powers, people were skeptical that a movie about a little-known supervillain would actually be good. And it's not .

There was also a Discord server created by Sony that quickly went off the rails .

a screenshot of rapid fire chats happening in the "Morbius" Discord

According to Know Your Meme , Morbius memes first appeared in October 2021 and took off in March 2022 when Twitter users started ironically calling for Morbius to sweep awards season.

What's interesting about the sudden resurgence of Morbius showings is that so far people haven't attending the film's current showings. According to Box Office Mojo , only 83 screens played the film over Memorial Day weekend and earned only $35,360 (for context, the newly released Top Gun: Maverick brought in $156 million).

When Morbius topped VOD charts in May, TikTok and Twitter users started joking about their hope for a sequel .

Some are concerned that because of all the social media buzz, it could actually happen — the film might have flopped at the box office , but people are still paying money to morb in the comfort of their own homes.

Even The Morbius Memes Couldn’t Stop It From Flopping In Theaters (Again)

Sony’s jared leto-led vampire movie only made $85,000 on 1,000 screens this weekend, proving it’s definitely not morbin’ time.

A Morbius meme showing Dr. Michael Morbius, played by Jared Leto, using what he calls the "Bat Radar" to search his surroundings after becoming a vampire.

After weeks of Morbius memes dominating the internet, Sony had the strange idea to bring Jared Leto’s living vampire back to more than 1,000 theaters this past weekend. Maybe the PlayStation maker was hoping for Morbius to reveal itself as a The Room -style cult classic here, but the bloodsucking superhero flick bombed at the cinemas again, raking in just $85,000 at the box office on Friday. In other words, on average, each theater where it was playing pulled in just $85. It is most definitely not Morbin’ Time.

Morbius had its original theatrical release back in April. The Marvel-Sony joint follows Dr. Michael Morbius, a human biologist who accidentally becomes a vampire after trying to cure himself of a deadly disease. It wasn’t a good film, according to the reviews, and it certainly didn’t blow audiences away, raking in only $170 million worldwide. But thanks in part to unauthorized, 24/7 Twitch livestreams of Jared Leto’s obnoxious method acting , Morbius was resurrected as hilarious Morbin’ memes took off online.

Read More: Morbius Memes Are Taking Over The Internet

But for as funny as the memes are, they couldn’t save Morbius . According to Forbes , the Jared Leto-led movie pulled in an extra $85,000 on Friday, bringing its domestic earning total to $73.6 million. Box Office Mojo, a site that tracks a film’s performance as it moves through cinemas around the world, doesn’t have the weekend earnings for June 3-6 yet, but it reports Morbius made $35,360 over the Memorial Day weekend , by which point it had dwindled down to just 83 theaters. By pushing it back out to 1,000 screens, Sony may have been banking on the idea that all the memes would propel people into theaters for gleefully ironic viewings, the kind where you laugh along with just how bad the movie is. But why would people shell out to see Morbius at the theaters when it’s still streaming on Twitch, right now , for free? Hell, I wouldn’t, not when I can see Top Gun: Maverick or something.

Because here’s the deal: Morbius isn’t any good. Not by a long shot. It’s full of nearly impossible-to-follow fight scenes, terrible one-liners , and no chemistry between lead actors Jared Leto and Matt Smith. The narrative itself is also littered with enough plot holes and uninspired visual effects that no amount of Morbius memes could make it a legitimately enjoyable watch. It’s not the movie itself, but rather the experience of watching it with other Twitch chatters, all of you united in ridiculing the cinematic disaster, that makes it tolerable, even fun. And that’s probably the best criticism I’ve got for Morbius .

Still, despite Morbius bombing not once but twice at the box office, there’s a subset of viewers—or “Morbheads,” as they call themselves—that won’t stop pining for a sequel. There are jokey titles for a whole slew of imaginary films folks came up with that might constitute an entire MCU ( Morbius Cinematic Universe), films like Morbius: The Rise of Morbius and Morbius 54: Morbzilla . Some are jokingly tweeting about counting down the days until Morbius 2 comes out. ( Which isn’t a confirmed thing , btw). Even Jared Leto got in on the meme fun—if we can even call it that anymore— posting himself reading a fake Morbius 2 script written by award-winning (also fake) author Bartholomew Cubbins. You might recognize that name from several Dr. Seuss books.

I’m not happy about Jared Leto jumping on the meme wagon. “It’s Morbin’ Time” is a joke, a catchphrase meant to mock the method-acting-obssessed actor. We’re laughing at him, not with him, so it’s weird seeing him meme with us. Still, I kinda want Morbius 2 . That way, hopefully the memetic phrase sticks to him like a scarlet letter whenever the living vampire turns to beat up some goons. That’s the only way I’m Morbin’ out to a sequel, if one ever happens.

Jared Leto plays ball in 'Morbius'

These ‘Morbius’ Memes Are More Entertaining Than the Film Itself

Image of Chelsea Steiner

How do you solve a problem like Morbius ? Sony’s latest half-baked Marvel entry has finally hit theaters after years of delays and false starts. And the resulting film is, well, not great . Critics gave Morbius a 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes , savaging the unoriginal and uninspired vampire tale. Sony’s Marvel films have always paled in comparison to the far superior Marvel cinematic universe, but at least Venom had a crazy, go-for-broke energy about it that was entertaining. (Much of that success is owed to Tom Hardy’s performance.) Morbius simply lies there like a wet noodle, offering nothing of note.

Morbius is the kind of high profile flop that grabs ahold of the internet, generating savage memes and jokes from across the globe. Truth be told, we haven’t had a universally panned film the likes of Morbius since Cats , which inspired a subgenre of dunks and internet jokes. At least no one will be campaigning for the butthole cut of Morbius , right guys? Here’s some of our favorite Morbius tweets, jokes, and memes currently making the rounds on the internet. And trust me when I tell you, these are far more entertaining than the film itself.

morbius movie review meme

Now streaming on:

Dr. Michael Morbius ( Jared Leto ), the title character of Columbia Pictures’ MCU-adjacent semi-horror movie “Morbius,” is a “living vampire.” What, you might be thinking, does that mean? Did the good doctor become a vampire without having to die first? Why, yes—he fused his DNA with vampire bat DNA in an attempt to cure the rare, fatal blood disease that’s been plaguing him since childhood. (What disease, you ask? You sweet, innocent child.) The fusion gave him super speed, super strength, echolocation abilities, and an appetite for blood that’s only partially sated by the artificial substitute for which Morbius rejects a Nobel Prize at the beginning of the film. (Why? Again, you’re asking too many questions.) In short, he’s a science vampire . (So, like if Batman was a doctor, then? Wrong universe, but close.)

So that means the usual rules of vampirism don’t apply, right? Yes and no. Loxias Crown ( Matt Smith ) Morbius’ best friend turned greatest adversary, does turn himself into a vampire using Morbius’ formula. But we don’t know if he died in the process. That sequence is left off screen, for reasons presumably tied to the many reshoots and delays that hampered “Morbius” on its journey to the big screen. And other characters die and come back to life after tasting Morbius’ blood, a supernatural transformation that doesn’t involve—as Morbius himself puts it at one point—"science stuff" at all. In short, the nature of Morbius’ affliction is messy and contradictory and not worth thinking about for more than a few seconds, a quality that extends throughout Daniel Espinosa ’s misbegotten superhero/horror hybrid.

All the greatest metaphorical hits are present in Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless ’ script, as well as in Leto’s performance: Vampirism as illness? Check. Vampirism as addiction? Yup. Don’t ask for much in terms of actually developing these themes, however, as the film’s approach is to point and yell, “look over there!” whenever things get complicated. A superhero whose murders are the direct result of his attempts to help people presents a complex moral dilemma. But you wouldn’t know it from this film, which takes any intriguing elements of its title character’s story and flattens them into clichéd grandstanding about the obligation of the privileged few to protect the unsuspecting many.

The basic thrust of the plot is that Morbius—a celebrity scientist whose lab is funded by Crown’s family fortune—is conducting experiments ethically questionable enough that all involved think it best to pursue them on international waters. That’s no problem, given Crown’s vast wealth. But the aftermath of the experiment’s first human trial leaves eight sailors dead, and soon their bodies are discovered on a ghost ship much like the one that harbors Count Dracula at the beginning of Bram Stoker ’s novel. (That’s not “Morbius’” only reference to other, more coherent vampire narratives: The ship is named the Murnau, after the director of “ Nosferatu .”)

From there, Morbius—who, as you may have already guessed, was turned into a “living vampire” during the experiment—is ostensibly under investigation by the FBI. But Agents Rodriguez ( Al Madrigal ) and Stroud ( Tyrese Gibson ) do a terrible job tracking him, given that he returns to his lab with his colleague and love interest Dr. Martine Bancroft ( Adria Arjona ) within hours of the crime. This is a front-page story with an escalating body count, and the prime suspect is wandering around unnoticed by doing little more than putting up the hood on his sweatshirt. But no matter. On to a more important question: Is the vampire stuff cool?

Sadly, not really. Like most superhero movies, “Morbius'' is rated PG-13, which limits the blood to the sanguine juice boxes Morbius chugs throughout and the occasional rusty stain across a character’s throat. And although prosthetic artists are listed in the film's credits, their contributions are difficult to make out amid the heavy-handed CGI. “Morbius” is not an MCU film: It belongs to the so-called “Spider-Verse,” coming from the same studio as “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” But it shares an Achilles’ heel with the MCU, in the sense that you can’t tell what’s going on in any of the film’s action sequences.

If it’s not the wavy, sketchy CGI trails that follow in Morbius’ wake—picture a combination of psychedelic tracers and the soot creatures from “My Neighbor Totoro”—cluttering up the screen, it’s those damn bats. Earlier action sequences aren’t much better, to be clear. But it’s almost impossible to follow the film’s climactic battle, thanks to a colony of vampire bats that swoop in at the last minute to help Morbius clean up the bloodthirsty mess he’s made. Espinosa seems to know that it’s difficult to make out what’s happening, pausing for a midair slow-motion shot in nearly every action sequence. The problem there is, lingering on these moments reveals how obviously phony they are.

But the film’s over-reliance on digital effects isn’t terribly surprising in a modern superhero movie. Neither is Smith’s sympathetic-to-a-point villain. Nor, for that matter, is Leto’s bland hero, whose most distinctive aspect is the demanding physical transformation the actor underwent for the role. No, the only really surprising—and, therefore, the most disappointing—thing about “Morbius” is the fact that it’s an honest-to-goodness horror film. But only for a few seconds.

Midway through the film, a nurse walks alone down the creepy, abandoned hallway of a hospital late at night, triggering a series of motion-activated sensors as she goes. Suddenly, a light flashes further down the hall, drawing the eye to the point where it disappears into the horizon. A shape! The nurse spots the intruder and runs, bulbs flashing as she goes. She stops to catch her breath, and a monstrous hand pops up from the bottom of the screen. She screams. The camera pulls back, lingering as each isolated puddle of illumination blinks out until only the woman’s prone body—and the shadowy form hunched over her—can be seen. Finally, that light goes out as well, bathing the screen in darkness.

Enjoy the gasp as it escapes from your throat, dear viewer. Because you’re not going to get another one, at least not from this movie. Better luck next time with the actual undead, we suppose.

"Morbius" is available only in theaters on April 1.

Marvel Pokes Fun at Morbius Movie Meme in Official Halloween Video

Morbius Marvel meme

Yes, Marvel just featured Morbius ' "It's Morbin Time" meme in its latest Halloween promotional video.

Jared Leto's Morbius may have had its fair share of ups and downs, but one memorable aspect of the movie is the memes that were born from it, such as the famous "Morbin Time" line . The phrase became viral when a Twitter user posted that the "best part of Morbius was when he said 'IT'S MORBIN' TIME' and morbed all over those guys," gaining over 11,000 retweets and 121,000 likes in one month.

Leto even joined in on the fun when he shared a fake script page teasing Morbius 2 along with the "It's Morbin Time" tagline . In addition, Sony Pictures capitalized on the fact that Morbius' meme became viral when it re-released the movie in theaters for a limited time.

Now, it seems that Marvel also wants to embrace Morbius' trending meme due to it being included in a new promo.

Morbius Movie Meme Included in Marvel Promo

Marvel Entertainment posted a new promotional video to celebrate Halloween, including a surprising nod to Morbius ' hilarious meme.

At the 0:34 mark of the video, a comic-accurate Morbius announced that "It's Morbin Time" before proceeding to DJ a Halloween party involving different Marvel characters:

Although Marvel fans openly criticized Morbius during its theatrical run, the "It's Morbin Time" line became a trending topic online that even led to various related memes.

The promo also included an appearance from Steve Rogers' Captain America, Bucky, and Sam Wilson's Star-Spangled Avenger:

Scarlet Witch and Vision even joined in on the Halloween fun:

The full promo can be seen below:

When Will Morbius Return?

It seems that Marvel included Morbius' famous line in its Halloween promo to acknowledge the hilarious viral moment that came out of Sony's Spider-Man spin-off movie. Although it was included in the video, many fans would wonder if a possible sequel to Morbius will be made despite bad reviews from critics .

Morbius  star Matt Smith even expressed his hope that the titular vampire will  "continue in multiple films"   after his origin story. Adria Arjona, who portrayed Dr. Martine Bancroft, also teased an exciting future for her character , saying that she's "excited to see where Martine will go"  in the future.

At this stage, there is still no word if Morbius 2 is being developed, but its post-credits scene could hint that the character's comeback is needed to pay off the Sinister Six tease alongside Michael Keaton's Vulture.

It is unknown how Sony would continue Jared Leto's Marvel stint as the titular vampire, but it's reasonable to assume that he would be back for at least one more outing with the other villains to fight Spider-Man, potentially in a Sinister Six spin-off movie, Morbius 2 , or another Tom Holland-led Marvel film.

Morbius is available for purchase on all major digital platforms.

Morbius gets resurrected by memes, flops on first day back in theaters

morbius movie review meme

Morbius is back in theaters — despite no one even asking for it — and its unpopularity is only making itself more obvious. The film made just $85,000 on Friday after making a return to over 1,000 theaters, bringing its domestic cumulative to $73.6 million (via Forbes ).

Morbius was originally released on April 1st and wasn’t the most well-received. In The Verge ’s review of the flick , our TV and film reporter, Charles Pulliam-Moore, says Morbius ’ pacing, plot, and the performance of its lead actors feel “ill-conceived,” and “calls into question Sony’s grand project of building an entire cinematic universe on Spider-Man’s back .”

Sony likely re-released the movie with the hope that renewed interest in the “it’s morbin’ time” meme would somehow trigger a second larger wave of people who would want to sit through the Spider-Man spinoff. But it turns out that a meme’s popularity doesn’t directly correlate to genuine interest — who could’ve guessed?

In an even more cringey move, Jared Leto — the star of Morbius — just had to get in on the meme, posting a video on Twitter that shows him reading from a fake script titled Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time . Here’s to hoping that Sony is just trolling us all, and isn’t planning on having Dr. Morbius make a cameo in the next Spider-Man with his hip new catchphrase, or, even worse, get a sequel.

Madame Web Review: Sony's New Spider-Man Universe Movie Is A Horrible, Cheap Imitation

The mcu just cast its best kang replacement, mcu's longest original avenger trilogy makes 1 endgame hero ending truly perfect.

  • Madame Web connected to wider Spider-Man lore, but failed to impress with audiences and critics.
  • Adam Scott adds charm as Uncle Ben, but chemistry with Dakota Johnson falls flat.
  • Unclear if new Peter Parker sets a foundation for a new Spider-Verse, separate from the MCU.

Madame Web stands largely apart from the rest of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, but the brand's latest Marvel movie does have connections to wider Spider-Man characters and lore. Despite its Spider-Man-adjacent subject matter, Madame Web failed to land with audiences or critics. Though Madame Web 's excellent cast , including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Isabela Merced, bring talent to the project, the film did little with its premise and, like Morbius , has since become fodder for memes . With that said, interest in the film suggests that it could grow a cult following with Madame Web streaming on Netflix starting today.

Cassandra Webb is usually depicted as an older, blind woman who uses psychic powers to manipulate the webs of the Spider-Verse. She has appeared in animated series, comics, and video games, although she has never been adapted like in this film . By crafting an origin story, Sony hoped to take the character's premise and build an ensemble around her with charismatic stars. Using Madame Web's powers of clairvoyance as a device for storytelling akin to the Final Destination films, there was hope for the launch of a new franchise. However, specific Spider-Man ties were kept vague enough to pivot as future plans continue to develop and change.

With an awful script and not a single ounce of charm among the star-studded cast, Madame Web feels like little more than a Spider-Man movie knockoff.

Adam Scott Plays Spider-Man's Uncle Ben

An excellent casting is wasted in madame web.

With an uncle played by Parks and Recreation 's Adam Scott, the latest Sony Spider-verse film has followed the pattern of casting younger and better-looking people as Spider-Man's guardians. Adam Scott steps into this role with charisma and charm as Cassie's best friend and co-worker, who is on his character's defining path to becoming an uncle. While Adam Scott is a great performer, this feels strange to watch. While the viewer is aware of Peter Parker's significance and relationship with Ben, little is done to set this character apart from the future version audiences will see later .

It is strange, too, that Dakota Johnson's Cassie and Adam Scott's Ben seem to have a flirtatious chemistry, even if that chemistry is not effective. The two are very close and charismatic, and pairing them together makes sense to an extent, but when the film gives not-so-subtle hints about Ben Parker dating somebody who is suggested to be the future Aunt May, his flirtation with Cassie feels uncomfortable to watch. Casting Emma Roberts as Ben's sister Mary, Spider-Man's eventual mother, is another great choice. However, neither are given much to do in the grand scheme of the movie.

Which Spider-Man Is Uncle Ben's Nephew In Madame Web?

Is this peter parker completely new.

Though Peter Parker is born at the end of Madame Web , it's left unclear if this Peter is meant to grow into a previously-seen version of the hero. It has been reported that there were plans to bring in Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, and there were plans to bring in Tom Holland's Spider-Man that included concept art , but neither of these made sense with the time in which they set the film, so they had to be scrapped. It has even been reported that the year of the film was intentionally made ambiguous when filming so that the filmmakers could change it later . Ultimately, they decided to go ahead without a Spider-Man, instead introducing new Spider-Women.

As a result, the Spider-Man in Madame Web must be a new, entirely different iteration set in this fresh universe. Multiversal storytelling is now a significant part of Spider-Man stories, as seen in Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse , and creating another universe's Spider-Man wouldn't work against Sony's success. Unfortunately, following the disappointing performance of Madame Web, it's highly unlikely that audiences will ever meet this new iteration of Peter Parker.

How Madame Web Connects To The Sony Spider-Verse

Venom and morbius must be elsewhere.

Despite Sony's attempts to create a universe built around Venom, Madame Web strangely does not have any connection to it. For a studio that is attempting to make a big cinematic universe, this is an unexpected choice. Following Morbius ' attempts to lightly connect to Venom , it seems strange that Madame Web decided against making any such ties. However, it does make some level of sense given the movie takes place so many years before Venom and Morbius .

In Madame Web, Cassie travels to the Amazon, where her mother researched spiders right before she died and interacts with Las Arañas, or the Spider-People. These Peruvian tribe members wear vines that resemble the shape of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man costume. Ezekiel Sims, the villain, then shows up in New York wearing a discolored version of the same Spider-Man suit . Having shown that Peter drew and knitted this suit in Spider-Man raises questions that Madame Web does not answer.

Madame Web Is Not Part Of The MCU

Disney has to be careful with the marvel brand.

Despite Spider-Man being an MCU mainstay, Madame Web is not a part of the MCU . With very specific deals and wording between Sony and Disney, the MCU has gone to great lengths to retain its creative control. Maintaining quality within its cinematic universe has been critical to upholding the reputation of the Marvel brand, and allowing other studios to contribute to that without oversight would be detrimental to their universe. This has resulted in a film not connected to the Avengers or the MCU.

Through post-credit turmoil in Venom: Let There Be Carnage , it could be argued that Sony’s universe is now part of the MCU multiverse. Then, arguably, Morbius and even Kraven the Hunter may be part of the MCU. By that logic, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and even Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man are also part of that canon, considering the multiversal travel of Spider-Man: No Way Home . Fortunately for Disney, Madame Web is not set in any universe that has proven to be connected to the MCU.

Technically, any Marvel movie or TV show can be considered very loosely tied to the MCU via the endless multiverse. However, a tighter definition of what is and isn't in the MCU is useful for the differentiation of franchises and continuities.

Madame Web ’s disappointing run at the box office makes its blurry connections between franchises easier to deal with because it is unlikely ever to be followed up on in a theoretical Madame Web 2 . Still, it is interesting to speculate on what kind of future would have come if the film had succeeded. Certainly, some of the Spider-Women would be followed up on, and Cassie's story would likely have crossed dimensions to link up with other stories in other universes. For better and for worse, we have likely seen the last of Madame Web .

Madame Web is now available to stream on Netflix.
