To keep minds from wandering off, include some interactive games or activities in the lesson. For example, if you conducted a lesson on the respiratory system, you could ask them to practice breathing techniques.
Maintain eye contact with your students, and you’ll get instant feedback on how interested they are in the interactive presentation.

Need a good presentation topic? Here are hundreds of them.
Get your team on prezi – watch this on demand video.
Anete Ezera November 04, 2022
If youâre looking for good topics for presentations, youâve landed on the right page. In this article, youâll find plenty of good presentation topics, tips on choosing the most suitable topic for you, and essential design elements to make your presentation a success.Â
Many factors go into an excellent presentation. You need to have confident body language and engage your audience to hold their attention. You also need eye-catching visual aids like images, data visualizations, GIFs, and others (all of which you can find in Prezi ), not to mention a great opening to grab attention and a strong closing line to stay memorable. However, the most essential aspect of your presentation is the topic. Itâs the core of your presentation, so it has to be strong, insightful, attention-grabbing, and appealing to yourself and your audience in order to evolve into a successful presentation everyone will love.Â
How to choose a good presentation topic
There are millions of topics you could create a presentation on, but what defines a good topic? If youâre struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you canât decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.Â
Whatâs the goal of your presentation?Â
When youâre choosing a topic, consider the meaning behind it. Ask yourself what the purpose of talking about this topic is, and what you want to say about it. Whatever topic you choose to present, the conclusion needs to provide a takeaway or lesson you want to communicate to your audience. A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable. Â
Are you interested in the topic?
If youâre not interested in the topic, others wonât be curious either. Interest, enthusiasm, and passion enrich your presentation and are noticeable when presenting. Interest shines through and inspires others to find the topic as fascinating as you do. Think about the last time you saw someone sharing something they were passionate about â their excitement drew people in to pay closer attention to what they were saying.Â
When choosing a topic, you need to find it or a particular angle of it interesting for yourself. For example, perhaps youâre not a pop music enthusiast, but youâre passionate about studying cultural phenomena. In this case, you can talk about pop musicâs influence on early 2000s youth culture.Â
Will your audience find this topic relatable?Â
While you have to find the topic youâre presenting interesting, you also have to think about your audience. When choosing a subject, consider your audienceâs background in terms of demographics, interests, culture, and knowledge level about the topic. Think about what others will find fascinating and relevant, so theyâre not bored or confused during your presentation.
Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic?
Personal experiences are always great to share in a presentation, providing your unique perspective for anyone listening. While you can easily prepare your presentation based on a quick Google search, it wonât make the same lasting impact on your audience. Choose a topic you have some prior knowledge about, or have an interesting opinion you can share with others. Itâll make your presentation more engaging and memorable.
Ideas for good presentation topics
Itâs not easy to come up with a good presentation topic from scratch. Itâs much easier to get inspired from other good presentation topics to build your topic on. Whether youâre looking for presentation ideas for work, about me presentation ideas, unique or easy presentation topics, youâll find them all here.
Without further ado, here are some good presentation topics to choose from or get inspired by.

How to create a good presentationÂ
If you know what you want to present on, itâs time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyoneâs attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements:Â
Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic.Â
In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Preziâs content library. When selecting your visuals, consider whatâs relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add whatâs meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable.Â
The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. Itâll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.Â
If youâre creating a Prezi presentation, you can create a dynamic storytelling experience by experimenting with your layout. Instead of going from slide to slide, you can zoom in and out of topics and experiment with different shapes, animations, and effects that draw the viewer into your story world. Hereâs an example of a Prezi presentation with a great storytelling layout:
Author: Lydia Antonatos
Data visualizations can elevate your presentation from being a good one to a great one. By providing data behind your arguments, youâll appear more trustworthy and confident in your audienceâs eyes.Â
Add charts, graphs, interactive maps, and more to your presentations with Prezi Design. You can choose from a wide selection of charts and maps to illustrate your data. With interactive elements, youâll be able to engage your audience and make a memorable impact.Â
Engaging visuals, a well-structured layout, and relevant data visualizations will provide a great starting base to create a memorable presentation. Discover other tips and tricks that make your presentation effective and capture peopleâs attention.Â
Choosing a topic for a presentation isnât easy. When selecting a topic, think about the goal of your presentation, your interest and knowledge about the topic, and whether or not your audience will find it relevant and interesting for them. Also, get inspired by other topics thatâll help you figure out what you want to talk about. Lastly, when creating your presentation, consider the impact of visuals, layout, and data visualizations. To simplify the creation process, follow the step-by-step process of making a presentation with helpful tips and resources.

Imagine a day filled with laughter, shared meals, and playful adventures. Waking up refreshed, a family connects over breakfast, sharing dreams and creating plans. They explore together, be it a museum visit or a quiet picnic, finding joy in nature, or friendly competition. As the sun sets, reflections filled with gratitude paint the evening, solidifying the love and connection that makes the day perfect, not for its grandeur but for the simple treasures of being together.

500+ Best Presentation Topics to Appeal to Any Audience in 2024
Welcome, friends, to the ultimate guide for creating powerful, fun, informative, and engaging presentations! In this article, Iâll show you how to choose a topic that will inspire, inform, and captivate your audience.
You know that a successful speech or presentation requires many essential elements. Your body language must exude confidence, and your voice must convey enthusiasm. Your visual aids must be eye-catching and relevant, and your opening and closing lines must leave a lasting impression.
But one of the most important aspect of your speech or presentation is the topic itself. It must be engaging, insightful, and meaningful to both you and your audience. Your topic is the foundation of your presentation, so it needs to be rock solid.
How do you choose a good presentation topic? đ¤
There are millions of topics you could use for presentations, but what defines a good topic? If youâre struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you canât decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.
Whatâs the goal of your presentation? đŻ
First, consider the purpose of your presentation. What do you want your audience to take away from your talk? A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable and impactful.
Are you interested in the topic? đ
Choose a topic that interests you. Your passion for the subject will shine through and inspire your audience to engage with your presentation.
Will your audience find this topic relatable? đĽ
Consider your audience. What will they find relevant and relatable? Your topic must connect with their interests and knowledge level to keep them engaged and informed.
Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic? đ§
Draw from your personal experiences and knowledge. Sharing your unique perspective will make your presentation more engaging and memorable.
What are some creative ways to present topics? đ¨
If you donât have expertise in a topic, think about how you can relate it to your actual expertise. For example, if youâre giving a speech about social media without much expertise, but you do have expertise in Inca ruins, you can say something like: âJust as the Inca ruins were constructed layer by layer, so too has social media evolved, with each new platform and feature building on what came before it.â
How can I make a presentation more entertaining? đ
Make it visual: Use images, charts, and videos to keep the audience engaged and entertained.
Use humor: Add a bit of humor to lighten the mood and keep people interested.
Interactivity: Draw your audience in with an impromptu poll or quiz, a creative activity, or humor.
Tell a story: Think about what kinds of characters your audience would find interesting or persuasive. What about animals, like dogs? Is there a relatable theme or message? Follow templates like the Past-Present-Future framework to create a story arc.
Use variety: Switch it up by alternating between slides, videos, and activities.
Break it up: Keep the presentation short and sweet by splitting it into multiple parts.
Use the celebrity factor: Share a fun and relevant anecdote about a celebrity like Taylor Swift or Lizzo.
Use props: Utilize interesting props to make the presentation more interesting and interactive.

The 10-Minute Presentation Topics Structure
As you might imagine, the hardest part of a 10-minute presentation is actually sticking to 10 minutes. None of your audience, organisers or fellow speakers will be pleased if your speech starts running over, but it’s hard to know how not to.
You might be tempted to cram as much information as possible, but doing so is just going to make for an overbearing presentation. Especially for this type of presentation , knowing what to leave out is as much of a skill as knowing what to put in, so try and follow the sample below for a perfectly structured presentation.
- Introduction (1 slide) – Start your presentation with a quick question, fact or story relayed in a maximum of 2 minutes.
- Body (3 slides) – Get into the nitty gritty of your talk with 3 slides. Audiences struggle to take home more than three ideas, so spacing all three out over the course of 6 or 7 minutes can be very effective.
- Conclusion (1 slide) – End it all with a quick sum up of your 3 main points. You should be able to do this in 1 minute.
This 10-minute presentation example format contains a fairly conservative 5 slides, based on the famous 10-20-30 rule of presentations. In that rule, an ideal presentation is 10 slides in 20 minutes, meaning a 10-minute presentation would only require 5 slides.
Use interactive features with AhaSlides to gain better engagement in any type of presentation! You can spin the fun to the presentation, by gathering crowd ideas by idea board , live word clouds , or surveying them by top free survey tool , online polling , and also test their knowledge with an online quiz creator !

10 Interview Presentation Ideas – 10-Minute Presentation Topics
More and more nowadays, recruiters are turning to quick-fire presentation as a means of testing a candidate’s skill and confidence in presenting something.
But, it’s more than that. Recruiters also want to learn about you as a person. They want to know what interests you, what makes you tick and what has changed your life in a profound way.
If you can nail any of these presentation topics in your interview, you’ll be starting next Monday!
- Someone who inspires you – Pick a hero and talk about their background, their achievements, what you’ve learned from them and how it’s shaped you as a person.
- The most eye-opening place you’ve ever been – A travelling experience or holiday that blew your mind. This might not necessarily be your favourite ever abroad experience, but it was one that made you realise something you had not thought about before.
- An imagined problem – Set out a hypothetical problem at the company you’re applying for. Show the recruiters the steps you would take to eradicate that problem for good.
- Something you’re proud of – We’ve all got achievements we’re proud of, and they do not necessarily work achievements. A quick 10-minute presentation on something you’ve done or made that has made you proud can reveal a lot of good stuff about you as a person.
- The future of your field – Make some interesting, bold predictions about where you think the industry is heading in the upcoming years. Do research, get stats to back up your claims, and avoid being condescending.
- A workflow you’ve fixed – Untidy workflows are rampant in many workplaces. If you’ve had a hand in turning something inefficient into a well-oiled machine, make a presentation about it!
- A book you’d love to write – Assuming you were a top-class wordsmith, what’s the one topic you’d love to write a book about? Would it be fiction or non-fiction? What would the plot be? Who are the characters?
- Your favourite work culture – Choose the job with the best work culture in terms of office atmosphere, rules, after-work activities and trips away. Explain what was so great about it; it might give your potential new boss a few ideas!
- Pet peeves in the workplace – If you fancy yourself as a bit of a comedian, listing out the things that grind your gears in the office could be a good laugh and a nice bit of observational comedy for your recruiters. Make sure it’s actually funny though, as listening to a candidate moan for 10 minutes is not normally something that leads to recruitment.
- The good and bad of remote working – Surely every office worker in the world has experience of remote working. Pry open your own experiences and discuss whether or not they’ve been for the better or for, the worse.
10 Relatable 10-Minute Presentation Topics
People love stuffs they can relate to their own experiences. It’s the reason why your presentation on the problems of the post office was a hit, but your one on the use of thermoplongeurs and suspension compression on modern fatigue carousels was an absolute travesty.
Keeping topics nicely open and accessible for everyone is a great way to get a good reaction. Do you need some topics for presentation that participants can get involved in quickly? Check out these fun presentation topics ideas as below…
- The best Disney princess – The best interesting presentation topics! Everyone’s got their favourite; who’s the one that gives you the most hope for generations of strong, independent girls?

- Reasons for procrastination – List out all the things that keep you from doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Remember to tell some stories in this – chances are that almost all of your audience will be able to relate.
- Is social distancing for life? Introverts, assemble. Or actually, don’t. Should we keep social distancing an opt-in, opt-out kind of thing?

- Pluto’s a planet – Believe it or not, there are a surprising number of Pluto aficionados out there. Talking about how Pluto’s a planet could really get them on your side, and they’re a powerful bunch.

At MITâs Festival of Learning 2024, faculty and instructors, students, staff, and alumni exchanged perspectives about the digital tools and innovations theyâre experimenting with in the classroom. Panelists agreed that generative AI should be used to scaffold â not replace â learning experiences.
This annual event, co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor, celebrates teaching and learning innovations. When introducing new teaching and learning technologies, panelists stressed the importance of iteration and teaching students how to develop critical thinking skills while leveraging technologies like generative AI.
âThe Festival of Learning brings the MIT community together to explore and celebrate what we do every day in the classroom,â said Christopher Capozzola, senior associate dean for open learning. âThis year's deep dive into generative AI was reflective and practical â yet another remarkable instance of âmind and handâ here at the Institute.â
Incorporating generative AI into learning experiences
MIT faculty and instructors arenât just willing to experiment with generative AI â some believe itâs a necessary tool to prepare students to be competitive in the workforce. âIn a future state, we will know how to teach skills with generative AI, but we need to be making iterative steps to get there instead of waiting around,â said Melissa Webster, lecturer in managerial communication at MIT Sloan School of Management.
Some educators are revisiting their coursesâ learning goals and redesigning assignments so students can achieve the desired outcomes in a world with AI. Webster, for example, previously paired written and oral assignments so students would develop ways of thinking. But, she saw an opportunity for teaching experimentation with generative AI. If students are using tools such as ChatGPT to help produce writing, Webster asked, âhow do we still get the thinking part in there?â
One of the new assignments Webster developed asked students to generate cover letters through ChatGPT and critique the results from the perspective of future hiring managers. Beyond learning how to refine generative AI prompts to produce better outputs, Webster shared that âstudents are thinking more about their thinking.â Reviewing their ChatGPT-generated cover letter helped students determine what to say and how to say it, supporting their development of higher-level strategic skills like persuasion and understanding audiences.
Takako Aikawa, senior lecturer at the MIT Global Studies and Languages Section, redesigned a vocabulary exercise to ensure students developed a deeper understanding of the Japanese language, rather than just right or wrong answers. Students compared short sentences written by themselves and by ChatGPT and developed broader vocabulary and grammar patterns beyond the textbook. âThis type of activity enhances not only their linguistic skills but stimulates their metacognitive or analytical thinking,â said Aikawa. âThey have to think in Japanese for these exercises.â
While these panelists and other Institute faculty and instructors are redesigning their assignments, many MIT undergraduate and graduate students across different academic departments are leveraging generative AI for efficiency: creating presentations, summarizing notes, and quickly retrieving specific ideas from long documents. But this technology can also creatively personalize learning experiences. Its ability to communicate information in different ways allows students with different backgrounds and abilities to adapt course material in a way thatâs specific to their particular context.
Generative AI, for example, can help with student-centered learning at the K-12 level. Joe Diaz, program manager and STEAM educator for MIT pK-12 at Open Learning, encouraged educators to foster learning experiences where the student can take ownership. âTake something that kids care about and theyâre passionate about, and they can discern where [generative AI] might not be correct or trustworthy,â said Diaz.
Panelists encouraged educators to think about generative AI in ways that move beyond a course policy statement. When incorporating generative AI into assignments, the key is to be clear about learning goals and open to sharing examples of how generative AI could be used in ways that align with those goals.
The importance of critical thinking
Although generative AI can have positive impacts on educational experiences, users need to understand why large language models might produce incorrect or biased results. Faculty, instructors, and student panelists emphasized that itâs critical to contextualize how generative AI works. â[Instructors] try to explain what goes on in the back end and that really does help my understanding when reading the answers that Iâm getting from ChatGPT or Copilot,â said Joyce Yuan, a senior in computer science.
Jesse Thaler, professor of physics and director of the National Science Foundation Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions, warned about trusting a probabilistic tool to give definitive answers without uncertainty bands. âThe interface and the output needs to be of a form that there are these pieces that you can verify or things that you can cross-check,â Thaler said.
When introducing tools like calculators or generative AI, the faculty and instructors on the panel said itâs essential for students to develop critical thinking skills in those particular academic and professional contexts. Computer science courses, for example, could permit students to use ChatGPT for help with their homework if the problem sets are broad enough that generative AI tools wouldnât capture the full answer. However, introductory students who havenât developed the understanding of programming concepts need to be able to discern whether the information ChatGPT generated was accurate or not.
Ana Bell, senior lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and MITx digital learning scientist, dedicated one class toward the end of the semester of Course 6.100L (Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python) to teach students how to use ChatGPT for programming questions. She wanted students to understand why setting up generative AI tools with the context for programming problems, inputting as many details as possible, will help achieve the best possible results. âEven after it gives you a response back, you have to be critical about that response,â said Bell. By waiting to introduce ChatGPT until this stage, students were able to look at generative AIâs answers critically because they had spent the semester developing the skills to be able to identify whether problem sets were incorrect or might not work for every case.
A scaffold for learning experiences
The bottom line from the panelists during the Festival of Learning was that generative AI should provide scaffolding for engaging learning experiences where students can still achieve desired learning goals. The MIT undergraduate and graduate student panelists found it invaluable when educators set expectations for the course about when and how itâs appropriate to use AI tools. Informing students of the learning goals allows them to understand whether generative AI will help or hinder their learning. Student panelists asked for trust that they would use generative AI as a starting point, or treat it like a brainstorming session with a friend for a group project. Faculty and instructor panelists said they will continue iterating their lesson plans to best support student learning and critical thinking.
Panelists from both sides of the classroom discussed the importance of generative AI users being responsible for the content they produce and avoiding automation bias â trusting the technologyâs response implicitly without thinking critically about why it produced that answer and whether itâs accurate. But since generative AI is built by people making design decisions, Thaler told students, âYou have power to change the behavior of those tools.â

Most Americans think U.S. K-12 STEM education isnât above average, but test results paint a mixed picture
Most Americans believe K-12 STEM education in the United States is either average or below average compared with other wealthy nations, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
Recent global standardized test scores show that students in the U.S. are, in fact, lagging behind their peers in other wealthy nations when it comes to math. But Americaâs students are doing better than average in science compared with pupils in these other countries.
Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand Americansâ ratings of K-12 STEM education in the United States. For this analysis, we surveyed 10,133 U.S. adults from Feb. 7 to 11, 2024.
Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Centerâs American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way, nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATPâs methodology .
Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and its methodology .
We also analyzed the latest data from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which tests 15-year-old students in math, reading and science in member and partner countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This analysis only includes scores from students in the 37 OECD countries that took the 2022 PISA.
How do Americans think U.S. STEM education compares with other wealthy countries?
Just 28% of U.S. adults say America is the best in the world or above average in K-12 science, technology, engineering and math education compared with other wealthy nations. A third say the U.S. is average, while another 32% think the U.S. is below average or the worst in K-12 STEM education.
Some demographic groups are more pessimistic than others about the state of U.S. STEM education. White Americans (24%) are less likely than Black (31%), Hispanic (37%) or English-speaking Asian (43%) Americans to say U.S. K-12 STEM education is the best in the world or above average. And fewer women (25%) than men (32%) say K-12 STEM education is at least above average.
Republicans and Democrats give similar ratings to K-12 STEM education: 31% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say it is at least above average, as do 27% of Republicans and GOP leaners.
Americansâ views today are similar to those in a 2019 telephone survey by the Center, which was conducted before the coronavirus pandemic caused major disruptions in the countryâs schools. In that survey, 31% of Americans said U.S. K-12 STEM education is the best in the world or above average compared with other nations.
How does the U.S. compare with other countries in STEM test scores?
The latest figures from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) show a mixed picture in U.S. math and science scores.
As of 2022, the U.S. was below average in math but above average in science compared with other member countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of mostly highly developed, democratic nations:
- U.S. students ranked 28th out of 37 OECD member countries in math. Among OECD countries, Japanese students had the highest math scores and Colombian students scored lowest. The U.S. ranking was similar in 2018, the last time the test was administered. The U.S. average score for math fell by 13 percentage points between 2018 and 2022, but the U.S. was far from alone in experiencing a decline in scores. In fact, 25 of the 37 OECD countries saw at least a 10-point drop in average math scores from 2018 to 2022.
- In science, the U.S. ranked 12th out of 37 OECD countries. Japanese students ranked highest and Mexican students ranked lowest. The U.S average science score was virtually unchanged since 2018. Across OECD countries, far fewer countries experienced a large decline in science scores than in math scores. Seven OECD countries saw their mean science scores decline by 10 points or more.
PISA is taken by 15-year-old students about every three years. Students in 37 OECD countries took the 2022 PISA.

Top Education Department official steps down amid crisis over college financial aid
Richard cordray, the official in charge of the free application for federal student aid, or fafsa, will step down at the end of june, the education department said friday..
The top Biden administration official overseeing federal college financial aid will depart his role this summer, the Education Department said Friday, capping off a year of turmoil for students and universities.Â
Richard Cordray, the chief operating officer for Federal Student Aid, will step down at the end of June, officials said. The former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Cordray faced mounting criticism from congressional Republicans to leave his post amid calamitous delays in the college financial aid process.
In a statement to USA TODAY, Cordray did not comment on the FAFSA problems. He said his office has achieved key milestones in his three-year term. He has agreed to stay on during an interim transition period.
"Over my tenure, we provided student loan forgiveness to more than 4,000,000 borrowers and their families; made it easier for people to apply for and manage federal student aid; and took strong actions to hold schools accountable for defrauding students," Cordray said.
Cordray's departure comes as scores of high school seniors across the country await aid offers they typically would have received by now. Repeated glitches and errors in the rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, truncated the decision-making timelines for hundreds of thousands of students. College officials have scrambled to get aid offers out the door, sometimes using inaccurate information to make crucial calculations about how much families should expect to pay for college in the fall.
"This is the worst time for a change in management and leadership to happen," said Brittani Williams, a former financial aid counselor and outreach coordinator for Louisiana. Williams, who oversees advocacy, policy and research for the organization Generation Hope, said the change could exacerbate the turmoil and students' distrust in the financial aid system. "This crisis will turn away students from matriculating."
The FAFSA blunders havenât let up. Now the Education Department has a credibility issue.
At a congressional hearing this month, a panel of experts said the problem with the FAFSA had reached crisis levels and could trigger a drop in college enrollment.
âIf there was a financial aid director, or even a college president, that delayed financial aid on their campus for up to six months, the professional price that would be paid for that would be pretty steep,â Justin Draeger, president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, said during the hearing.Â
Congress mandated that the form be simplified, a bipartisan effort that Republicans and Democrats agreed was long overdue. But the Education Department's implementation of the new FAFSA this year was beset with problems, eroding trust between the federal government, higher education institutions, students and their families.
Cordray was at the forefront. His most recent publicly available performance contract indicated that his top priority on the job was implementing the new FAFSA. Republicans, and some former Education Department officials, say he lost sight of that goal and focused too much on student loan relief efforts instead.
Officials in jobs like Cordray's are appointed to fixed terms, and his tenure was slated to come to an end soon if it wasn't renewed. Arthur Wayne Johnson, who served in the gig during the Trump administration and is now running for Congress, said he was glad to see a change at the top, given the recent turmoil.
"Theyâve got a serious leadership question now," he said.
Michelle Dimino, director of education at the moderate think tank Third Way, noted the scrutiny the Education Department has faced from Congress. "Congress has made no secret of the fact that they are furious, and the Department also needs Congress to fund them adequately," she said. "A major personnel change like this can be a natural step to reset that dynamic."
Clare McCann, the higher education director at the research philanthropy group Arnold Ventures and a former Education Department adviser, said the agency has struggled with turnover. She's concerned about the implications of another transition and appreciates that Cordray will remain in his post while the administration looks for a replacement with "the skills and background to do what is an incredibly complicated job."
In a statement Friday, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona praised Cordray for "fixing the broken student loan system." He did not specifically mention Cordray's role in the FAFSA rollout.
"It's no exaggeration to say that Rich helped change millions of lives for the better," Cardona said.
Laura Perna, an expert in college access and affordability at the University of Pennsylvania, said Cordray's departure shows how problematic the FAFSA delays have been. "This, clearly, is a big failure, and from the perspective of the individual student, the counselor, the parent, the college access organizations ... the system broke," she said.
But Perna is not sure a new COO would rectify the situation.
"For individual students, I don't know that a change in leadership is going to mean anything," she said. "People need results. They need to get their financial aid offers. They need to have the information so they can make one of the most important decisions they'll ever make."

Americaâs graying. We need to change the way we think about age.
Experts say instead of disability, focus needs to shift to ability, health, with greater participation, economically and socially
Alvin Powell
Harvard Staff Writer
People in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s run marathons, write books, and go to work daily. But the predominant national conversation on aging focuses on disability rather than ability, something experts say is a problem as participation of Americaâs older adults grows more important, economically and socially, as the nation ages.
And itâs not just the young with the attitude problem. Caitlin Coyle, director of UMass Bostonâs Center for Social & Demographic Research on Aging, said some of the biggest perpetuators of negative stereotypes are those growing older themselves.
âHow we talk about it is powerful,â Coyle said Wednesday, as part of a discussion of the topic at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health . âWe do a lot of internalized ageism with self-talk like âOh, I feel so old today,â or âI canât do that,â âIâm too old for that,â or âI canât stay up late.â I think if we start to engage people in thinking about how they talk about aging outwardly â and also how they think about aging internally â we can really start to shift the societal narrative.â
The panelists at the event âA reexamination of aging: Living longer, happier, and healthierâ agreed attitudes about aging set expectations for ourselves and others, but whatâs also important are programs and policies crafted to encourage healthy aging â via prevention and risk-factor reduction, along with involvement in society, through work, volunteerism, family relationships, religious organizations, or other ways of engaging that can bring meaning to life.
âI think if we start to engage people in thinking about how they talk about aging outwardly â and also how they think about aging internally â we can really start to shift the societal narrative.â Caitlin Coyle
âWe are expecting to live much longer than our parents and grandparents. And the structures we put in place to support healthy aging are really crucial,â said New York City Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan, a Chan School graduate and member of the panel. âAt every turn, we are not just looking at the averted negative consequences of unhealthy aging, but looking at the aspirational, forward-looking indicators of healthy aging.â
The discussion hosted by The Studio at the Chan School was moderated by Kay Lazar, a reporter at The Boston Globe, and also featured Marisol Amaya, executive director of La Alianza Hispana, and Andrew Scott, professor of economics at London Business School and author of the book âThe Longevity Imperative: How to Build a Healthier and More Productive Society to Support Our Longer Lives.â
Panelists acknowledged that declining health and rising disability are part of the landscape as one grows old, but Scott said it seems that when people think about aging they âgo straight to the endâ where those factors take on greater importance.
He attributed part of that to the âmedicalizationâ of aging, which focuses on health problems and death. But whatâs lost in between are, for many, years of increased life satisfaction, greater acceptance of oneself and others, decreased pressure to live up to ideals of how to look and behave, greater emotional stability during crises, and new opportunities to learn and develop new skills.
âThe trouble with aging is we tend to go straight to the end of life. And thatâs one of the reasons why we donât like to think about a longer life being about having more future,â Scott said. âHow do you think about that? How do you prepare for it? We see aging as an event â youâre 65 years old â but itâs a process that is relevant to all ages. What can you do to manage that process and how do you make sure you make the most of it?â
The tendency to view aging through a medical lens is not the only issue, however. Family structure in the nation has changed as people have fewer children and multigenerational living arrangements grow less common. This has led to an increasing tendency to segregate society by age and worsened the problem of isolation among the elderly.
At La Alianza Hispana, a social service agency focused on the Latinx community of Greater Boston, the elderly are provided programming based on individual preferences â bingo, for instance, isnât for everyone and should be reserved for those who love it, Amaya said. Others want to play instruments, others to learn something new, and still others to teach.
Accordingly, the nonprofitâs elder-services program emphasizes flexibility, even hiring people still willing to work and able to draw on a lifetime of experience. Some are lacking in computer and other tech skills, but those can be taught, which the organization does, she said.
âWe are flexible. We always encourage them to do more, empower them, because they see barriers and say, âI cannot do it,ââ Amaya said.
As we create a society that is more elderly-friendly, Scott said thinking about the economics of living longer is important, since many fear outliving their resources.
But itâs also important to think about how to allow people to stay productive longer, which has to begin earlier in life by guarding oneâs health through better habits, thinking about how to make jobs more age-friendly, and perhaps shifting roles from those that require strength to those that emphasize skill and experience.
A significant amount of attention must also be paid, panelists agreed, to reducing inequality in healthful aging. The trend toward healthier aging is not universal, with Black and brown communities making up a disproportionate number of those who die before 65, Vasan said. That highlights the importance of addressing preventative health in those communities in the decades before 65.
âI think inequity is a real missing piece in the dialogue, the public narrative, around longevity and aging,â Vasan said. âHow do we create a civic expectation that healthier, longer lives are more equitably experienced? These are not mutually exclusive agendas. The equity agenda is central to the life expectancy agenda. There is no path that doesnât go through equity. Addressing the causes of premature death gets us to healthier, longer lives for everybody.â
