If you value becoming a remote worker or staying one, you can find countless companies hiring to fill work-from-home positions.

With so many people seeking remote work, beware of work-from-home sites that promote fake job ads and other scams. Below is a list of nine reputable work-from-home job sites that offer a wide range of legitimate remote jobs.

Launched in 2007, FlexJobs was created specifically to help professionals find remote and flexible jobs. The site's founder, Sara Sutton, explains she was inspired to start FlexJobs because she had been looking for a remote opportunity with a flexible schedule while pregnant and was discouraged by how many bogus job sites there were in this niche.

FlexJobs' staff researches what they identify as the best job listings for professional positions in more than 50 career fields worldwide. Opportunities are part-time , full-time, on a flexible schedule and on an alternative schedule. Positions range from entry-level to executive-level. FlexJobs provides client support for members and a money-back guarantee. Pricing starts at $2.95 for a 14-day trial.

Remote.co , a FlexJobs partner also founded by Sutton, describes itself as a site for "all things remote work." It offers sections for employers to post remote jobs and for job seekers to find those opportunities. The site also includes a remote work blog and common work-from-home questions answered by 146 remote companies and virtual teams.

One of the major job search sites for traditional work,  Indeed also has a special section for remote jobs. The site currently lists more than 47,000 remote jobs that are searchable by job type, keywords or company. Indeed also lets users browse companies by industry, search for salaries and upload resumes so that employers can find them.

We Work Remotely

According to the We Work Remotely site, its community has over 4.5 million visitors. The site lists remote jobs in categories including programming, design, customer support, and sales and marketing . It also designates between full-time and contract positions. We Work Remotely also offers a number of resources for remote job seekers including a Remote Leader Playbook, remote work trends and the top 100 remote companies.

ZipRecruiter

While ZipRecruiter is a larger job board that publishes opportunities about traditional jobs as well, it contains a section specifically for remote positions.

Some of the most popular types of remote jobs listed on the site are administrative, part-time and contract work. The site also has contract-to-hire and part-time jobs. Some of the most popular remote job titles found on the site are teacher, graphic designer and bookkeeper.

A free site that's targeted solely toward remote jobs, Jobspresso has over 1,000 openings listed, featuring tech roles in software development, design, user experience, and development and operations, as well as writing, editing and product management.

Jobspresso curates, reviews and adds to its listings daily. According to the Jobspresso website, "100% of our jobs are hand-picked, manually reviewed and expertly curated."

Working Nomads

Working Nomads distinguishes itself from other sites by offering a remote job board that spans positions worldwide. It targets job seekers who want to “work remotely from your home or places around the world.” It offers fully remote positions and partly remote jobs where you might need to spend some time on site for training or team-building purposes.

Listing remote jobs in software development, customer support, marketing, design and other industries, the Remote OK site states that its job board reaches more than 2.6 million remote workers.

Job seekers can search by salary and benefits as well as job title and location. The site also includes an opportunity for remote workers and nomads to sign up to receive global health insurance.

This is a free, standard job board with a category search and a community option to receive newsletters and webinars via email on topics relevant to remote job searchers and workers. It allows you to search for jobs by skill and location or by company.

Though the Remotive site places an emphasis on remote tech opportunities, it posts other types of remote jobs as well. Job hunters can use a “Remotive Accelerator” to unlock over 34,000 additional opportunities.

Finding online work is about finding your niche. Work-from-home jobs normally fall into several different categories, which include but aren’t limited to transcription, freelance writing, design and development, digital assistance, and data entry.

If you’re lucky, you’ve already got experience in one of these areas. Maybe you’ve done a little graphic design work, or you’re an IT jack-of-all-trades, or writing is your passion. Once you’re confident about what you have to offer, you can use the sites below to find remote jobs within your chosen category. 

In this half of the list, we’ll look at online job websites focusing on remote employment opportunities (not freelance gig work, which will come later).

FlexJobs is more or less the quintessential work-from-home jobs site. You do have to pay for access, but behind that paywall, you get an extremely well-vetted experience. Every job poster there is serious, and since you’re paying to use it, they know that you’re serious as well.

Since some remote jobs require on-site training before the remote aspect kicks in, this can be pretty useful. While it might not be the biggest remote jobs site out there yet, it’s free and postings are vetted so it’s mostly serious employers looking for serious employees.

Remote.Co offers a vetted selection of free job postings to people looking to start working remotely. Their job board lets you quickly find work suited to your niche. It’s much like the former sites in that it offers a wide variety of job categories for both creative and analytic types.

Different people want different things. Some people want the security of a firm remote job with set tasks and rigid responsibilities. That’s totally valid and is, in a lot of ways, a safer option (sometimes I envy the simplicity of a W2 and work-sponsored health insurance).

But if you’re looking to launch your own business and work with a variety of clients, freelancing is often a smart way to start. In this half of the article, we’re going to talk about sites that you can use to facilitate that vision.

Upwork is a highly competitive and vetted community of freelancers that will let you seek out work opportunities from a wide range of clients. This is actually where I got my start back in college (although it was called Elance at the time).

Since the freelancers on Upwork are normally of a certain skill level, the rates are often fairer than they may be on other more dubious sites. It can still be hit or miss—I’ve seen my fair share of clients who want to pay writers two cents per word—but since Upwork lists estimated budgets right in the post, you can simply skip over the lowballers instead of applying. 

I haven’t been active on Upwork for a couple years, but I know they recently changed to a paid model where freelancers have to purchase credits (called “connects”) in order to apply for jobs.

The rationale is that it weeds out non-serious applicants, but you can decide if that’s a dealbreaker. On the bright side for you, it reduces competition. Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon to see 100+ proposals for a single gig.

On Fiverr , you can set up an account and sell tasks. With a premium account, you can offer various levels of tasks and pricing. While the site is very competitive, one advantage is that it lets the clients come to you, so it saves you time on busywork like applications and proposals.

I probably wouldn’t rely on it as your sole source of income, since clients often come to Fiverr looking for inexpensive labor (the name was born from the idea of five-dollar tasks). Freelancer is one of the most frustrating sites for new freelancers, but it’s free and has a low barrier of entry, so you should be able to get started without a whole lot of hassle.

I mean, it used to be some job postings here and there, and before you know it, AI, algorithms and what not have taken over, with these fancy new freelance platforms appearing all the time. Take Insolvo for instance which nobody heard of until recently, when suddenly I’m getting a good portion of my writing gigs from there. Good stuff!

I wouldn’t recommend Fiverr. I’m a writer and it’s really hard to find clients unless you only get paid $5 per article, which actually comes out to $4 per article after they take their cut. I usually take about 4 hours to write one article after spending some time mulling over the ideas, so I get paid less than child laborers in Southeast Asia.

However, if you know that a remote job is right for you, check out these websites to find your dream job.

Best Work From Home Sites

If you have ever looked for any kind of job, then you have likely come across Indeed . It is one of the largest job sites in the world. In addition to traditional jobs, the site also has remote listings.

Employers can post directly to the site. However, Indeed also pulls job postings from thousands of other sites to create a comprehensive view of the job market. The site has millions of postings and many of them are work-from-home opportunities.

To search, type in the keyword or job title you’re looking for. In the “Where” box, type “remote.” That should turn up a number of opportunities. You can narrow them down by looking in the left sidebar for ways to filter.

For example, you can filter by salary range, job type (full-time, contract, part-time, temporary) and company.

You may also want to glance at the postings located in “Remote, OR.” Sometimes work-from-home jobs are accidentally placed under this location. It’s worth taking a look!

2. Glassdoor

Like Indeed, Glassdoor  is a job site with millions of job listings. In order to search for jobs , just type “Remote (Work From Home)” in the location box.

The great thing about Glassdoor is that, in addition to job postings, the site also lists important information about companies.

Through Glassdoor, you can find information about salaries, the hiring process, benefits, and reviews by people who have worked there.

3. FlexJobs

It can be frustrating to sift through work-from-home opportunities and realize the number of scams out there. You may even be wary of applying to any work from home job because it may not be legit.

FlexJobs  solves those problems.

Every job posted on FlexJobs has been screened by their team. Before a job is posted to the FlexJobs board, the company is thoroughly vetted to ensure that it is a legitimate opportunity.

That’s great news for anyone searching for a work-from-home job. Instead of spending your time vetting job postings, you can just spend your time applying to the jobs.

Just choose the “Can be done from anywhere” option on the job board and start applying!

Unfortunately, FlexJobs is not a free job board. The service starts at $14.95/month.

However, the site offers multiple sales every year, so you may be able to get the service for less if you time it right.

Personally, I bought FlexJobs at a 50% discount for one year. I thought it was worth the cost to have access to so many legitimate opportunities.

4. AngelList

AngelList  is a good place to look if you want to work in the tech startup industry. Companies are popping up on a regular basis and need good people to fill their positions.

Many startups are focused on technology and seem to be very open to at home workers. The nature of the startup game lends itself to remote working environments.

The site has over 20,000 startups connected to its platform. Once you sign up, you will need to create a profile with your resume and other relevant information.

After you get your profile set up, just start looking for jobs. If you see something you like, you can star it

Companies will also be able to “star” your profile for their job searches. If there is a match, then you will be invited to continue with the application process.

This is a great feature because you don’t have to send out cover letters to companies that are not interested in working with you. That can save you time during your job search.

5. Check Penny Hoarder Job Board

Like other job boards, the  Penny Hoarder Work-From-Home Job Portal  has plenty of opportunities. Like FlexJobs, the staff screens every opportunity that is listed. That means that there should be no scams waiting for you on the job portal.

All you need to do is go to the board and start searching. The posting helpfully includes details about the potential employer. Best of all, the portal is free to use.

6. Remote OK

Remote OK  is focused on finding jobs for digital nomads. Although digital nomads may live a life of travel, their jobs can be done by at-home workers, too.

Most of these jobs are centered around technology. Although there is a “non-tech” option, the best jobs on this site are for the tech-savvy among us.

7. Jobspresso

Yes, you can sip your espresso and explore your remote work options on Jobspresso . The job site only lists remote jobs. You will not need to sift through traditional jobs because everything is remote.

You can browse through all the job postings or narrow your search by career category. An important thing to look out for is a time zone or state requirement.

Some work-from-home jobs still have a location requirement, even if you would be working from your home.

The job board here is very diverse. If you aren’t exactly sure what you what to do from home, then this may a good place to see your options listed out.

8. Skip the Drive

As the name suggests, Skip the Drive  wants to help you find a work-from-home opportunity. The site has a fun calculator that will help you determine how much you will save through working from home.

That number may be just the motivation you need to start applying to remote opportunities.

The jobs on this site generally link back to Indeed postings. However, you may find jobs on here that aren’t on Indeed.

9. PowerToFly

PowerToFly is specifically focused on finding flexible work opportunities for women in tech, mostly mothers that want to build a better work-life balance.

To get started, you will need to fill out a profile. Then just start looking through the “Remote Jobs” category.

In addition to a focused job board, PowerToFly has resources that aim to help women reach their goals. The platform has webinars, mentoring and events that are focused around finding the perfect job.

If you have been struggling to find a remote opportunity, then learning from these resources may be helpful.

If you are intrigued by the idea but not necessarily looking for a new job right now, then you can choose the “happily employed” option. The platform is similar to LinkedIn in that it hosts job searchers and happily employed professionals all in one place.

10. Stack Overflow

Stack Overflow  is focused on developer jobs. If you have the right skills, then there are plenty of remote opportunities available.

This is only a good option if you have the skills to land a developer job.

11. Working Nomads

Working Nomads  is another job board that focuses only on remote opportunities. The focus of the board is tech. However, there are a few other options.

You will likely need strong software skills to land most jobs on this board.

12. Virtual Vocations

In order to use Virtual Vocations , you will need to create an account. Although this is a slightly time-consuming process, the quality of this job board makes it worth it.

There are multiple filters that you can use to narrow your search effectively. The toolbar contains filters for category, type, weekly hours, career level, travel requirements, date posted, geographic description, and education level.

Simply filter down the results to your ideal search. With the short list of selected options, you should be able to find virtual assistant jobs that suit your interests and needs easily.

Using a job board for its filters sounds too simple to matter. However, you will quickly realize the overwhelming amount of opportunities available once you start searching for a remote job.

It can be daunting to sift through job postings, but this filtered board will take care of that for you!

13. Hire My Mom

Hire My Mom  is a job board that is just for moms looking for jobs in small businesses. The focused job board requires that job seekers have at least one to two years of experience in the field they want to work in.

Unfortunately, it is not a free job board. The membership fee is $29.95 per quarter. If you are serious about finding a job, then it may be worth the cost.

Upwork  is a place to find remote, freelance work. Although you will be unable to find a full-time job on this site, it may be a good place to find work during your job search.

Sometimes finding a full-time opportunity takes some time, but life doesn’t wait while you’re job hunting. If you need to earn an income, then freelancing may be the right remote opportunity for now.

The job board has many opportunities for freelancers in a variety of fields. It is free to sign up.

However, if you land a job through Upwork then you will have to pay a service charge of 8.75% of the quote. It is a hefty fee, but if you need to find work quickly, this is an option.

15. ProBlogger

If you are looking for remote writing opportunities, then check out ProBlogger . Most of the opportunities on this site are remote freelance opportunities. However, there are some part-time and full-time roles available.

You will only be able to find writing jobs on this site. It is worth looking at if you have decent writing skills and a need for work.

Tips on Finding the Perfect Job

If you’re looking for a work-from-home job, check out these tips to find legit opportunities.

1. Watch Out for Scams

Some job postings sound too good to be true, and they are. When searching for a work-from-home job, you will need to be careful. Unfortunately, there are people that would like to take advantage of you.

The best thing to do is use your best judgment and conduct your own research on a job post if it seems too good to be true.

2. Decide What Field You Want to Work In

Luckily, there are countless remote opportunities available. It can be overwhelming to simply search for any work-from-home job. You need to narrow your search. With a more defined search, you will likely have a better chance of landing a job.

3. Capitalize on Your Skills

Many of your skills in your current job are transferable to an online job. Think about the skills you already have and how they could be utilized in a remote setting.

4. Find a Realistic Schedule

You may hope to watch your kids, travel, or multitask in some way while working from home.  You need to be realistic about the amount of time you have available to work.

Upwork does not charge an 8.75% fee from the quote; I’ve been working through this site for 2y. (This is the only freelance platform I’ve worked with yet, and I’ve found steady work through it.)

For the first $500 you make with _each_ client, you are charged 20% of your earnings. From $500 to $10,000, the fee is reduced to 10%, and beyond $10K, it goes down to 5%. IF you land a “featured job” or a job with an “Upwork Plus” client, the fee immediately starts at 10% instead of 20.

In addition, the site now requires you to buy “connects,” the way you “pay” to submit proposals. They are 15 cents each, no matter how many you buy (and are available in different bundle sizes), and it takes 2–6 connects to apply to a job (which is dependent on the size of the client’s budget). If you are invited to apply to a job, no connects are required.

While these two fees are irksome, they also are tax-deductible business expenses.

Digital nomadism is the new remote work of the future
