  • Offers high speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps and dual-band capabilities on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands
  • Is backward compatible with previous Wi-Fi technologies
  • Employs OFDMA technology to better support multiple devices on the network
  • Incorporates MIMO technology capable of sending and receiving up to eight independent Wi-Fi signal streams through multiple antennas

When creating a password, use a combination of symbols, numbers, and lowercase and uppercase letters. The more unpredictable your password, the stronger it is and the less likely it is to be breached.

Performance

As you allow more users and devices to connect to your network, keep an eye on its overall performance. If you notice performance issues, consider the following steps: 

  • Assign separate radio bands. If your network performance is struggling, consider assigning separate radio bands to different types of wireless devices. For example, you could use the 2.4GHz band as your guest access point and connect to your office printers and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This would completely free up your 5GHz band so that you and your co-workers have faster access and a more stable VoIP connection .
  • Test your network range. You could also test the range of your network and try switching from 5GHz to 2.4GHz as you move away from your router. 
  • Consider a wireless range extender. If you’re not getting a strong internet connection in certain areas of the office on one or both frequencies, consider installing a wireless range extender. For the best performance, pair a Wi-Fi range extender with a Wi-Fi router from the same manufacturer. However, most extenders can provide only about 50 percent of your router’s speed.

Guest access

If you intend to offer guests access to your Wi-Fi network, you can set up a specific customer landing page.

How to Set Up a Business-Grade Wi-Fi Network

Setting up a robust wi-fi network for your business doesn't have to be a nerve-wrecking experience. cio.com looks at seven key factors you need to consider, including access points, frequency bands, network management and the forthcoming 802.11ac standard..

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend means the number of smartphones and tablets are making their way onto corporate networks will only rise. An increasing number of these devices, including the Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7 tablets, are Wi-Fi only; this inevitably puts a strain on existing Wi-Fi networks. For businesses that are either (very) late to the Wi-Fi bandwagon or looking to overhaul an anarchic wireless infrastructure, here are several important points to consider.

Get Business-Grade Access Points

There’s a big disparity between the cost of consumer access points (AP) with business-centric models from leading brands such as Aruba, Cisco and Ruckus Wireless. Confused by what may appear to be similar specifications, small businesses may opt for cheaper consumer-grade Wi-Fi APs that are, in fact, inadequate for the task at hand.

To be fair, some of these differences are difficult to quantify. This includes less-than-rock-solid reliability under round-the-clock use and a tendency to perform poorly when faced with external interference from neighboring Wi-Fi networks. Indeed, even top-tier AP models targeted at consumers can overload with just a few dozen simultaneous connections. Finally, nonbusiness APs typically lack advanced capabilities in crucial areas such as security, manageability, load management and remote deployment and upgradability.

Business APs, on the other hand, are designed for rock-solid performance in the face of 24/7 operation and the crushing workload generated from dozens of simultaneously active Wi-Fi devices. This is a stark contrast from the handful of intermittently accessed Wi-Fi devices typical of a home environment. Moreover, you can expect a business-centric AP to incorporate as standard features crucial security, manageability, load management and remote deployment and upgradability capabilities (which will be discussed below).

Weigh 2.4GHz, 5GHz Frequency Bands Carefully

At the moment, there are two main frequencies bands designed for 802.11 Wi-Fi networks: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The larger amount of bandwidth available in the 5GHz band makes it the preferred option in business environments, though Wi-Fi clients operating at the 2.4GHz frequency block do have a better range. Most business-grade APs can operate in both frequency bands, while higher-end models can serve Wi-Fi clients in both bands simultaneously. The shorter range of 5GHz does allow APs to be deployed in closer proximity without signals overlapping and interfering with one another. This, in turn, allows for a higher number of AP to be deployed.

It should be noted that most Wi-Fi clients still do not work on the 5GHz band. While the iPad 2 and new iPad will work on a 5GHz network, lower-end tablets such as the Amazon Fire and Google Nexus 7 will connect on only the 2.4GHz band. Similarly, most smartphones are 2.4GHz only.

In recognition of the uneven support for 5GHz Wi-Fi, some APs can be configured to backhaul data over the 5GHz frequency band, serving wireless clients on the 2.4GHz band. This is particularly useful for bolstering weak wireless reception at locations that wired cabling cannot easily reach. Moreover, it is possible to set up a hybrid environment where both 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios are simultaneously in use. Devices that support 5GHz can be directed to connect on this frequency band to reduce congestion on the more crowded 2.4GHz band.

Pay Attention to Density of Access Points

As outlined in the previous section, upping the number of APs could increase the amount of interference being generated, reducing overall responsiveness and throughput. Indeed, a large number of APs deployed in a haphazard manner can actually reduce the number of devices a wireless network can supported. Yet with each worker carrying as many as three Wi-Fi capable devices (e.g., a laptop, a tablet and a smartphone) IT departments should expect the number of such devices to increase, if not skyrocket.

Careful positioning and configuration is thus required to deploy a high density of APs to properly support a large number of wireless clients. Brands such as Xirrus offers a high density of APs by ditching omnidirectional antennas in favor of directional ones, and by packing up to 16 of them in one enclosure with each antenna facing out.

Implement Strong Management, Security Mechanisms

Management and security of Wi-Fi networks is another aspect that businesses need to consider. Attempting to configure multiple APs individually in a business environment is not only highly inefficient; it’s also prone to errors.

As you can imagine, a well-designed management system plays an important role when dealing with more than a handful of APs. In addition, the evolving security landscape has increased the importance of built-in security features. Wi-Fi vendors now incorporate security features that, among other things, identify unauthorized networks, defend against spoofing attempts or stymie brute-force attacks. Moreover, the capability to log important system or security events to a syslog server or console is invaluable, making it possible to identify both wireless bottlenecks and security threats.

Another capability that is important for businesses is the support for multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs). An SSID is the network name that users see when connecting to a wireless network. While having multiple SSIDs does not increase the actual capacity of an AP, this feature does offer a number of important advantages on the security and management front.

For example, it is possible to configure varying levels of security for each SSID. A network for guest users may be designated as an open network, while wireless network cameras could be connected to a network protected by a long Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) static key, while yet another network can be setup to authenticate via RADIUS and used to serve employee laptops. Depending on SSID, wireless clients can be channeled through different virtual LANs to segregate the traffic, tagged with a different quality of service level or even routed through a security appliance.

Explore Access Point Power Options

A less obvious problem when setting up multiple wireless APs is the possibility of having to deploy them at inconvenient locations for maximum coverage. Powering these APs using Power over Ethernet (PoE) simplifies the problem while also sparing businesses the cost of laying separate electrical cable runs to each AP. PoE provides power over the same Ethernet cables that feed data to the APs while offering speeds of up to 1 Gbps, which is more than adequate throughput for the fastest commercially available APs today.

Businesses that do not already have a PoE infrastructure in place can easily deploy midspan PoE injectors at the server room or closet. Alternatively, PoE-capable network switches are relatively affordable now and is a good choice when keeping the server closet equipment count down is a priority. Powering APs via PoE also helps on the maintenance front; IT departments can more easily replace standard PoE injectors or switches that fail compared to having to scramble for a specific AC adapter. In the same vein, it is far easier to troubleshoot a single cable than to separately verify that the data link and power adapters of individual APs are working.

Finally, PoE allows for the use of standard UPS equipment to power PoE switches or injectors to protect APs from power outages. Obviously, a PoE strategy necessitates the use of APs with inherent PoE support, a feature usually found only in business-centric APs.

Understand Controller Architecture Options

The need to manage and coordinate multiple APs mandates that you use a central controller for anything other than the smallest deployments. As vendors have already built their Wi-Fi solutions around one or two different architectures, the controller architecture is less of an influence on purchasing than factors such as manageability and interoperability. This should not stop businesses from properly understanding the strengths and limitations of each option, however.

The most common design entails the use of a central appliance for configuring and managing multiple APs on the network. There are also vendors that incorporate controller logic inside existing network appliances, such as the WAN load-balancers from Peplink that can be used to manage the APs sold by the company. Meanwhile, Wi-Fi specialist Xirrus uses a “thin” access point strategy in which each array independently manages all on-board APs. A variant of that would be the virtual controller; here, an embedded controller within an AP manages smaller deployments of four to eight other APs.

Finally, there are cloud-based controllers managed entirely over the Internet, such as those made by Meraki . In a bid to reap the benefits of a centralized console without having to invest in a controller-based solution, startup Tanaza has built a cloud-based management solution in which standard non-cloud APs are configured online and changes are pushed out automatically.

Looking Ahead: 802.11ac Not Worth the Wait

With the 802.11ac wireless standard around the corner, the capability to upgrade to what is widely termed as “Gigabit Wi-Fi” would obviously be an appealing feature to many businesses.

It is important to remember, though, that is still under development at this point and is not expected to be completed until next year. Indeed, APs currently shipping with 802.11ac are essentially noncertified, and client devices that implement 802.11ac will likely only arrive a few months after the 5GHz standard gets rectification.

For these reasons, businesses looking to implement Wi-Fi today should just go ahead with their current plans rather than hold back and wait for technology that’s at least a year away.

How does wireless internet work? 

Wireless internet is simply the process of connecting to the internet without the need for cumbersome cables. Historically, we’ve been tethered to wires to stay connected to the devices that support our business. But now, we can rely on data that is transmitted via radio waves.

These radio waves are sent via frequencies of either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz between your device and a router. Hertz is the measurement used for frequency, with 1 hertz (Hz) equaling one wave per second. Therefore, one gigahertz (GHz) is equal to one billion waves per second. When calculating frequency, the higher the frequency is, the greater the volume of data that can be transmitted per second. 

To send data wirelessly, a computer user accesses the internet on their device, which converts your request into binary code, made up of 0s and 1s. In wireless transmission, the binary code is translated into wave frequencies using the Wi-Fi chip in your device and then travels to the Wi-Fi router your device is paired with. Next, the router converts the frequencies into binary and translates the code into the Internet request you made. The router will receive your data through a hardwired Ethernet cable, convert the wifi signal from your internet modem, and beam it around the premises.

Any wifi devices within range of the router’s wireless signal can connect to the internet. This includes mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, and more.

They can also simply surf the net, as their time and budget allows. By accepting both real money (coins and dollar bills) and credit cards, we can catch both the casual browser and the traveler with money to burn.

Stroll Net is the answer to an increasing demand. Americans want access to the methods of communication and volumes of information now available on the Internet, at a cost they can afford, and in such a way that they aren’t confined to a bedroom or office desk. Stroll Net’s goal is to provide the community with a convenient and affordable way to access the Internet away from home and the office.

We do not expect to replace standard internet access options (home, school, and work-based computers), but to supplement them; similar ventures, such as Internet cafes, have seen great success.

3.3 Fulfillment

Stroll Net will obtain its public Internet terminals from Supplier One, Inc. located in Vancouver, BC. Supplier One, Inc. will provide the locating service and the hardware required to run Stroll Net. Internet access and networking will be provided through Supplier Two.

3.4 Technology

Stroll Net will invest in terminals with high-speed computers to provide its customers with a fast and efficient connection to the Internet. The computers will be reliable and fun to work with. Stroll Net will continue to upgrade and modify the systems to stay current with communications technology. 4.2 Service Business Analysis

The explosion of the Internet has been well documented. Our increasingly mobile society means that a large percentage of these users will access the Internet through public Internet terminals. To be proactive and remain competitive it is imperative for business travelers to have reliable high-speed access to e-mail, the Internet and corporate networks. As such, it is becoming a standard for business travelers to stay only at hotels with high-speed Internet access and public Internet terminals.

Internet terminals with integrated Wi-Fi hotspots allow users to jump onto the Internet as easily as they would use an ATM. Our Internet terminals allow the public to experience rich multimedia content, that cannot be viewed on PDAs. Internet kiosks will very quickly become a standard feature of all hotels. The growth of Internet kiosks has very closely paralleled that of ATMs and payphones.

The fact that there are no public Internet terminals operating in Tech City, presents Stroll Net with a chance to seize this window of opportunity and enter into a profitable niche.

5.4 Marketing Strategy

Stroll Net will position itself as an aggressive, innovative company that supplies the market with an affordable way to access the Internet away from home and the office. Stroll Net will use advertising as its main source of promotion. We will acquire the services of Empire Communications Group and CyberMark International, Inc. to launch a diverse advertising campaign placed on television, radio, the Internet and in the local newspaper. 

Stroll Net’s brochures, letterhead and business correspondence will further reinforce these concepts. We also recognize that it costs six times more to attract a customer than to retain one. 5.4.1 Pricing Strategy

Stroll Net bases its prices for Internet and wireless WiFi usage on the “retail profit analysis” provided by our supplier, Supplier One, Inc. They have been in the kiosk industry for 5 years and has developed a solid pricing strategy.

Determining a fair-market, per-transaction fee for Internet and wireless WiFi usage is more difficult because there is no direct competition from another public internet terminal business in Tech City. Therefore, Stroll Net considered two sources to determine the hourly charge rate. First, we considered the cost to use other Internet servers, whether it is a local networking firm or a provider such as America Online. Internet access providers use different pricing schemes. Some charge a monthly fee, while others charge an hourly fee. In addition, some providers use a strategy with a combination of both pricing schemes. Thus, it can quickly become a high monthly cost for the individual. Second, Stroll Net looked at how public Internet terminals in other markets, such as Miami and New York, went about pricing Internet access.  Evaluating these two factors resulted in the following:

Walk-up Internet Access – Customers utilizing the terminals for internet access will be charged a .25 per minute transaction fee.

Wireless Internet Access – Customers utilizing the wireless WiFi connection will incur a fee of $3.95 per hour with a one hour minimum.

5.4.2 Promotion Strategy

Stroll Net will implement a pull strategy in order to build consumer awareness and demand. Initially, Stroll Net has budgeted $5,000 for promotional efforts which will include advertising with coupons for fifteen minutes of free Internet time.

Stroll Net realizes that in the future, when competition enters the market, additional revenues must be allocated for promotion in order to maintain market share.

5.5 Sales Strategy

Stroll Net employs route operators to collect all sales transactions and to perform routine maintenance on its terminals. Each route operator is responsible for keeping the terminals on his route stocked, clean and operational. Computer literacy is a requirement for Stroll Net employees. If an employee does not possess basic computer skills when they are hired, they are trained by our full-time technician. Our full-time technician is also available for terminals in need of minor repairs. Stroll Net’s commitment to prompt, dependable service is one of the key factors that distinguishes Stroll Net from all other competitors.

Our Sales Forecast is based upon real revenue reports from other customers of Supplier One, operating in similar urban settings in nearby states. Prepaid products and advertising will yield the greatest revenue per unit, but we expect the greatest number of transactions will be in walk-up internet access and Wifi access.

Stroll Net is owned and operated by Cam Piotr and Bob Green. The company, being small in nature, requires a simple organizational structure. Implementation of this organizational form calls for the owners to make all of the major management decisions in addition to monitoring all other business activities.

6.1 Personnel Plan

The staff will consist of 8 full-time route operators working forty hours a week at $10.00 per hour. In addition, one full-time technician (who is more technologically oriented to handle minor terminal repairs/inquiries) will be employed to work forty hours a week at $12.00 per hour. This simple structure provides a great deal of flexibility and allows communication to disperse quickly and directly. Because of these characteristics, there are few coordination problems seen at Stroll Net that are common within larger organizational chains. This strategy will enable Stroll Net to react quickly to changes in the market.

Sales: Stroll Net is basing their projected Internet usage sales on the financial snapshot information provided to them by Supplier One, Inc. Internet usage was estimated by calculating the average number of minutes each customer will spend accessing the Internet and then generating a conservative estimate as to how many transactions will be made per day.

Cost of Goods Sold: The cost of goods sold was determined by the “retail profit analysis” we obtained from Supplier One, Inc. The cost of prepaid calling cards is 20% of the selling price. The cost of Internet access is $50 per month, paid to Supplier Two for networking fees. The cost of terminal placement is 20% of total internet access sales.

Salaries Expense: The founders of Stroll Net, Cam Piotr and Bob Green, will receive a salary of $24,000 in year one, $26,400 in year two, and $29,040 in year three.

Payroll Expense: Stroll Net intends to hire eight full-time employees at $10.00/hour and a full-time technician at $12.00/hour. The total cost of employing nine people at these rates for the first year is $14,720/month.

Rent Expense: Stroll Net is looking to purchase a 2200 square foot facility at $104.74/sq. foot.

Utilities Expense:  Stroll Net is responsible for the payment of utilities including electric, water and garbage disposal. The basic monthly service charge for utilities expense will be $168.04. The phone bill will generated by five phone lines; one will be dedicated to a modem and four for business purposes. The basic monthly service charge for each line provided by Bellsouth is $59.95/month. Therefore, the total cost associated with the five phone lines is estimated at $299.75/month.

Marketing Expense: Stroll Net will allocate $50,000 for promotional expenses at the time of start-up. These dollars will be used for advertising on television, radio, the Internet and the local newspapers in order to build consumer awareness. Insurance Expense: Stroll Net has allocated $1,500 for insurance for the first year. As revenue increases in the second and third year of business, Stroll Net intends to invest more money for additional insurance coverage.

Legal and Consulting Fees: The cost of obtaining legal consultation in order to draw up the paper work necessary for client contracts is $1,500.

Depreciation: In depreciating our capital equipment, we used the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery Method. We depreciated our terminals over a three-year time period.

Taxes: Stroll Net is an LLC and, as an entity, it is not taxed. However, there is a 10% payroll burden.

We project reaching the break-even point in the seventh month.

7.3 Projected Profit and Loss

The following table contains our projections for profit and loss data. We anticipate a net profit of approximately $134,300 in the first year, as the Stroll Net idea catches on and sales increase. With a net profit margin of 18%, these projections are well within a reasonable range.

7.4 Projected Cash Flow

Cash flow data for the first three years is presented in the chart and table below. The table shows anticipated repayment of the long-term loan, as well as projected dividends which will be paid to investors in years two and three. Although Verizon sells a few business DSL plans, none have speeds at 25Mbps or more. For truly fast speeds, fiber is hard to beat. Verizon's fiber plans, branded Fios, offer you a chance at near-gigabit connections.

"Broadband" and "high-speed internet" are somewhat murky terms that not everyone defines equally. But here's what we use: in 2015, the FCC defined broadband service as any connection that provides customers with download speeds of at least 25Mbps. 

There’s no indisputable definition of high-speed internet. In fact, internet service providers attach the term to just about any plan, regardless of speed.

What’s more, the terms broadband internet and high-speed internet are often used interchangeably, further confusing things.

But why the confusion? Well, consider how the technology has evolved. Even the slowest plans featured in this article would have been considered blazingly fast in 2008—and much more so in 1998. So even if everyone did sit down and agree to a singular definition of high-speed internet, that definition would have to change every few years.

With that in mind, look for internet that’s fast enough for your needs rather than just high-speed internet. We’ll look at speeds in-depth in a minute.

Broadband more appropriately refers to any internet type that isn’t a dial-up connection. Essentially, broadband’s debut marks the age at which most of us moved on from the days of modems that tied up our phone lines to dial into internet provider companies like AOL. And what an age that was (we still hear the screeching modem sounds in our dreams).

Today, broadband internet generally includes any “always on” cable, DSL, fiber-optic, and even high-speed satellite internet connection. But not every plan operates at truly high speeds. So to compare internet providers, we decided to use the FCC’s 2015 guidelines on broadband internet speeds , which set the minimum at a 25Mbps downstream.

Most small to midsize businesses can operate well at 25Mbps or more. Of course, as speeds get faster, even this current definition will start to seem slow. And the FCC may change its mind on minimum broadband standards. We’ll update you as necessary.

High-speed broadband internet connections encompass plans from a variety of service providers and connection types. Depending on your area, you may have access to several of these or just one.

  • Cable: This connection uses the same modems and coaxial cables that deliver cable TV, so cable internet is widely available in most well-populated areas.
  • Digital subscriber line (DSL):  These may be sent via phone lines, but DSL connections are faster and more reliable than the phone-based dial-up internet of yesteryear.
  • Fiber:  Fiber-optic networks beam light through glass or plastic bundles of wires—each wire the size of a human hair— and these connections offer some of the fastest internet speeds on the planet.
  • Satellite: For rural businesses without access to land-based broadband, satellite internet is like an internet angel sent to earth by planet-orbiting stations.
