I love all the tropes in the Hallmark/Lifetime/Great American Family (🤮) pantheon of movies, but one of my favorites is when a big city person visits a small town for whatever reason and they go to a coffee shop or a diner, order some highfalutin city-fied coffee, and everyone reacts like they're dealing with an alien.

Like, townspeople that are in the coffee shop or diner turn and look, maybe murmur under their breath a bit. The person behind the counter looks at them with disdain and is, like, "We don't have that! We have coffee!"

I fucking love that. Inject that shit straight into my veins.

When he meets the two old timers right as he steps out of his car, he immediately yelps the diner that they recommend for coffee and is concerned that it only has two stars. Just get a two star coffee, dickhead. You'll be okay.

Clay from Manhattan moves to lesser New York to help a big box mart crush the local Christmas tree farm. When Clay falls for the daughter trying to keep her family’s farm afloat, she manipulates her into marketing schemes ostensibly to boost business. He says “get creative” to compete with the store that can afford to upend her and her ideas at every step, and because he’s seeing her under false pretenses, he’s always able to stay a step ahead.

Clay is a pretty insidious capitalist; Not content to simply run them out of business, he compels her to sink her family into debt running promotions to save the farm. I really don’t see how they aimed to do it, but this movie really wants you to believe that free market competition works for everyone in the end.

Pretty much the standard issue version of this kind of Hallmark Xmas fare, although the ending was a little more practical and realistic than I expect from one of those holiday romcoms, which I appreciated.

I think I hate this movie. It’s just to dang nice. We’re dealing with livelihoods and potentially losing a thirty year old family business and it’s all niceties. These squeaky clean movies are just to afraid of real conflict. The desire to always be nice is a real detriment. Hurt some feelings, it’s okay. The mom is so annoyingly neutral. Why does everybody want these two to get together? I know he’s doing his job, but realistically this is ridiculous.
