Recently our school organized an educational trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The Taj Mahal is the most beautiful monument built in the Mughal period. It is one of the wonders of the world. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

This gateway of Taj Mahal is built with the use of Red Sandstone. There is a beautiful garden that begins at the main gateway and ends at the base of the monument. The building is made of pure white marble. It took twenty thousand workmen and twenty years to build. The monument is built on the bank of the river Yamuna.  It was the most beautiful building I had ever seen.

Last Sunday, we went to the Red Fort by a specially hired bus. Along the entrance two rows of shops selling various objects of art besides selling handicrafts. During the Mughal times, this was known as Meena Bazaar. After crossing the lawn, we reached the historic building known as ‘Naubat Khana’. Then we saw ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ or the Hall of Public Audience.

Then we went to the ’Rang Mahal’ which was a place of pleasures and richly inlaid with precious stones in the Mughal period. There is a ‘Khas Mahal’ beside the Rang Mahal. It has a beautiful marble screen. The Red Fort also has the War Memorial Museum where weapons used in the First World War are exhibited. We got to see many historical things that we read in our books. We enjoyed the trip very much.

My dream came true when last month our history teacher arranged a trip to Agra for us. It was 24 October when we reached there. That very afternoon we went to see the famous Taj Mahal. It is a masterpiece of architecture-all in marble. We admired the four more mosques with tall slender minarets and the huge central dome. The surroundings lend beauty to it. The mausoleum stands in the center of a big garden with marble water channels, rows of fountains, and stately cypress trees.

The tombs of Shah Jahan and his wife lie beneath the dome. We went to see the Agra Fort too. When Shah Jahan was confined there, he spent his time gazing at the mausoleum of his creation from his prison window. We saw things that we had read about in our books-the Dewan-i-Am, the Diwan-i-Khas, the Pearl Mosque, and the Shish Mahal. A visit to a place of historical importance does make history real and interesting. It was a wonderful trip.

A visit to a historical place is very educative. It instructs as well as entertains us. I am fond of visiting historical buildings. Last year, I went to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. In the evening, we went to see the Taj Mahal. I had heard a lot about the beauty of the Taj Mahal. But reality surpassed the descriptions that had been given to me.

It is a wonder in marble, a specimen of Mughal art. Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in the sweet memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was built about three hundred and fifty years ago.  It stands on the right bank of the river Yamuna. The gateway which is made of red stone is very beautiful. The garden is very lovely. The tall dark cypress trees, smooth green lawns, and the beds of flowers are pleasing to the eyes. The fountains flow here and there.

The main building is made of white marble. It stands on a raised platform. At its four corners, there are four stately towers. Inside the tomb, Emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved Mumtaz Mahal lie buried side by side. This monument tells us about the expertise of the artists and craftsmen of that era. The visit to the Taj Mahal was a wonderful experience for us. It was both enjoyable and educational.

Our school had already announced that we were going to see the Taj Mahal. We were elated and were wondering how thrilling, and exciting this experience would be. We had heard and read about it- there was a full chapter in our history book on Taj Mahal, but now we were about to see it for real.

Our principal and teachers had planned for all of us to visit the Taj Mahal on a full moon night. We were told that on the full moon night the monument looks even more glamorous and glorious, and it makes for a splendid spectacle. This added even more excitement to the previous announcement. We would have had to stay awake the whole night but so what? For such a wonderful experience, it was not a big deal.

We were asked to assemble on a Saturday afternoon at the school campus. We were instructed to carry our packed dinner-boxes and water bottles. We were strictly prohibited from buying any eatables there or littering the Taj Garden’s premises. We were warned against buying the souvenirs from the crafty hawkers. These instructions and warnings were repeated to us over and over again. First by our Principal, then by the respective teachers who were in charge of our groups into which we were divided.

We had brought consent from our parents in writing for this trip. From Delhi to Agra, we had to travel by bus, it was around a 5 hours journey. We assembled at the school campus at the given time, and were divided into groups. The teachers took charge of the respective groups, our teacher in charge asked us to stand in a queue, she called out our names from a list that she carried. The items each one of us was carrying were inspected, and then we went ahead to board the buses. 

As we started to move out of the school campus, we all hailed the school with three cheers in a chorus and the journey began. After about 5 hours we were told that we were at The Taj Mahal. The full moon was shining in the sky right above us. The premises seemed like it was filled with the milky hue. We left our buses at a little distance and stepped down. Again, our teachers called out our names from the lists, and we all stood in a straight line. We followed our teacher and walked towards the monument.

After a little while, we were at the main gate of The Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal glowed in the full moonlight in its grandeur. We all felt wonderstruck by the majesty, beauty, and opulence of the dome structure. The moonlit premises added elegance to the mystique. The Taj Mahal resembled a white swan standing still in a sprawling milk lake. The fountains on the campus were bubbling and bursting along the pathway. The fountains were flanked by the green lawns on either side. It was heavily crowded. Men, women, and children were trying to find a way for themselves. There were so many foreigners looking at the monument like they were totally wonderstruck.

We had to ramble to make it to the main platform, took off our shoes at the entrance, and were up on the main platform on which stood the great monument. The four minarets stood like sentinels on the four corners. After about two hours of wandering and rejoicing around the ‘Dream in Marble’, we came down to the lawns to open our dinner packets. Thereafter, it was time to begin our return journey.

Last Sunday, I visited the Taj Mahal with my family. It was a dream come true for us to have visited the architectural marvel about which we have heard so much and had read so much in our books. We started feeling proud of our country to have this magnificent form of art.

Our history teacher asked us to assemble at a place and started explaining how the Mughal emperor Shahjahan got this monument built as a mausoleum for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. He had stated his desire to be buried by her side after his death. So, there were the two graves inside the mausoleum placed side by side.

We roamed around, kept adoring the astounding beauty, and were amazed at the artistry of the fine carvings. How gifted must those hands be which created that piece of art with so much artistry, we pondered. We looked at the Taj Mahal at one glance and in the second looked at the full moon in the sky. The Taj Mahal looked no less marvellous than the moon in the sky.

River Yamuna flows on the backside of this magnificent monument. It was as if the Yamuna was washing the feet of this marvellous wonder with a full sense of gratitude. For two hours, we went around this monument only rejoicing and wondering.

I visited the famed Prayag relic, Patalpuri Temple, one of the oldest remaining pre-Muslim buildings. Close to the arsenal's northern wall sits this shrine. It seems the fort was built to be erected far higher than the temple.

The Akshaya Var tree was again in my path as I continued walking. This tree's wish-fulfilling well is said to be a popular destination for folklore lovers. Akbar stopped it. The Mughal Governor's (Military Commander's) pavilion, however, was  most inviting with Beautiful pillars. They had impeccable taste.

The British decided to demolish a considerable portion of the fort to make place for a school, reducing its beauty. At present, the historic palace is now an arsenal.

Then I went back to Triveni for a swim. I lauded the Ganga's merits after my Allahabad Fort visit. Comparing the old and new forts at Allahabad, it is evident that the old fort at Allahabad is in ruins, while the new fort at Allahabad demonstrates neglect.

It may have been called a joy forever, but unfortunately in the materialistic world of today, even the beauty of the Taj Mahal is in danger because of the effluent Nitrous oxide and Sulphur dioxide being emitted by the Mathura refinery. Let us hope the scientists are able to find a fix and can save our Taj Mahal.

Fatehpur Sikri is situated near Agra in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. To give tribute to the famous Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, emperor Akbar founded the Fatehpur Sikri from the twin villages of Fatehpur and Sikri in 1569. The IELTS or International English language Testing System is a standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The IELTS writing section has two tasks. For task 2, applicants need to write an essay on topics of general interest. An IELTS essay on historical places is an example of a common topic like history.

A question is usually given with a view or argument. Test takers need to write a formal response to the question in the format of an essay. It is important for the test takers who are preparing for an upcoming IELTS test to practice the common topics. Question: The museums and ancient sites are visited by tourists rather than the localities. 

What are the reasons? What measures can be taken to encourage local people to visit the historical sites? 

Historical places connect us to the past. We find our roots through historical sites and museums and relate with the past cultures. Several cities and countries are known today for their historical sites, and their former glory. These entities depict the ancient way of living and the traditions practiced in the previous years. However, the historical places and museums are mainly visited by tourists from other cities and countries. They do not draw a lot of interest from local communities. Let us take a look at all the reasons why we cannot find locals visiting ancient sites near their homes.

Locals find nothing new or particularly interesting about historical sites and the artifacts present in the museums in their vicinity. They have been living around them for so long that these locations have turned into blind spots.

Sadly, we travel to witness the historic beauty of other countries and cities and show little interest in historical places around us. We often pass by the historical places and the appeal of visiting them is lost. Over that, we also spend most of our lives in that particular area and do not consider it as a source of recreation or knowledge. For us, the historical sites located in our areas are similar to regular places that we see daily. The tourists are interested to learn about the cultural heritage and historical remains of various cities and states. They take out time and arrange money to explore the ancient sites and museums. On the other hand, the locals are busy making plans to visit places in other cities and countries. The basic reason is the site that you witness every day does not attract you as much. 

On many occasions, the locals are already aware of the culture and historic significance of a place and there is nothing new to discover. They consider it to be a waste of money and time, instead, they consider traveling to a new place. After all, no one is willing to spend on the same experiences. A tourist, on the other hand, finds it interesting to explore new places, cultures, food habits, shopping destinations, and ancient museums. 

As of now, the local people hardly visit the historical sites and museums around them. However, the situation should not remain the same. The government needs to take measures to rekindle interest among the local people and urge them to visit the historic areas in their vicinity.

Firstly, the tickets for entering the historic sites for locals should either be free or minimally priced. Free tickets will attract the masses. Local people must have full means to pay for visiting a local heritage site. 

Secondly, the historical sites and museums can portray new work and amusement activities that create interest among the local people. A museum can conduct various cultural shows, interactive sessions, and exhibitions for the local people so that the bond with the local communities stays alive. If the local people are allowed to participate and display their talent and artwork in the museums, we may see a rise in the number of locals visiting these places. 

Thirdly, festivals can be held in these historical sites. People usually love to celebrate festivals within their communities. So, if festivals are celebrated in the museums and historical sites we should see the sites filled with locals enjoying their hearts out. 

That being said, if implemented well, these measures can be effective in gaining a good amount of attention from the local people. Tourists have their reasons to visit a new place but to increase the attendance of local people, the government needs to take some of these special measures.

Question: Many historical buildings and sites protected by law are part of a nation’s history. Some people think they should be knocked down and others think they should be preserved. Give your opinion. 

Sites of historical relevance are particularly important because they connect people with their roots. The ancient connections with modern civilization shine bright in many famous historical and archaeological sites all around the world – from the everlasting pyramids of Egypt to the majestic Taj Mahal in India.

The order of things has changed with urbanization and modernization. Today, many people argue that historical sites should be knocked down, reducing them to worn-out ugly buildings in front of modern infrastructure. They argue that the past is a good place to relate, but not good for development and growth. It incurs high costs for preservation and does not contribute towards development. I strongly feel that historical sites are beautiful and they must be preserved. 

Firstly, historical sites are the key remains of our ancestors. It helps modern society to learn about different faiths, cultures, developments, civilizations, and a lot more. Historical sites also promote cultural diversity and uphold the values, traditions, and culture of a particular country or city. Demolishing a piece of history to build modern infrastructure is not the value we are trying to achieve. With history being erased we will lose out on the roots to which we belong. 

Secondly, many parts of the world largely depend on the tourism industry for generating revenue and employment. The money generated by tourism accounts for more than 5% of global GDP. Historical places are among the main attractions and pull factors for tourism. How can developing countries afford to lose this source of revenue? Many states and cities completely sustain themselves based on the tourism industry. This, in turn, calls for the better preservation of our cultural heritage. 

Thirdly, a small city or country gets recognition on the global map due to its famous historical sites that attract tourists from all over the world. Historical sites have helped many hidden places gain recognition and fame.

Lastly, historical buildings are the nation’s pride. For example, the ‘Taj Mahal’ of India, and the ‘Great Wall of China’, represent the respective countries themselves. These sites have both cultural and economic value for the countries they are located in.

Summing up, I strongly believe that historical sites should be preserved. A country’s ancient architecture speaks a lot about its beautiful timeless past and glory. Historical sites bind one generation to another and they help string together memories of the past.

Tips to Write an IELTS Winning Essay

  • The minimum word limit for the task 2 essay is 250. There is no upper word limit. 
  • You have 40 minutes to complete the essay.
  • Answer all parts of the questions. There can be more than one part. For example, in sample 1, there are two parts – the reasons why the local people do not visit the historic places and the measures to encourage local people to visit the historic sites.
  • Use related common vocabulary – some words for an essay on ‘historical places’ are ancient, culture, historic, contemporary, famous, roots, past, values, heritage, tradition, and tourism.
  • Use the relevant synonyms to write an essay after brainstorming your ideas. 
  • Do not use bullet points or numbers to write advantages and disadvantages or discuss the arguments. It is recommended to write 3-4 ideas and explain them with relevant information and examples. 
  • Spellings are important. Do not make spelling mistakes. Avoid using complicated and long ones to avoid mistakes. 
  • Do not miss your conclusion. It is important. Take time to summarize the key information in the essay. 
  • There are various kinds of essays and each of them needs to be written differently. Some of the common ones are agree-disagree, advantages-disadvantages, opinion essays, and problem-solution essays. 
  • You need to give your opinion in an opinion essay and it should have relevant reasons and ideas. 
  • In an ‘advantage and disadvantage’ essay, you need to focus on both advantages and disadvantages of a particular topic.
  • In an ‘agree and disagree’ essay, you need to speak for both sides and mention if you ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ with valid reasons.
  • If you are using facts and numbers, they should match with the official sources.
  • Organize your essay in short paragraphs. Do not write long paragraphs. 
  • Practice the topics that are frequently used in task 2. Some of the common topics are art, crime, education, modern technology, globalization, historical places, and social problems.
  • Marks in Task 2 are awarded based on lexical resources, vocabulary, grammar, and coherence. So, focus on all the aspects while writing.
  • The essay should be written in a formal or semi-formal tone. Be careful with the words that you choose to express ideas and concepts.

Our school recently organised a trip to Red Fort for class 8 students. The Red Fort, popularly referred to as Lal Quila, is a prominent landmark in Delhi. It is situated beside the Yamuna River. Shah Jehan constructed it in 1648 using red stones. It included Diwan-e-Aam which is a hall of public audience, Diwan-e-Khas, Rang Mahal, and other structures. Silver linings, diamonds, and precious stones have been used to embellish the pavilion's surroundings. There was also a museum honouring veterans and a war memorial where weapons used in the First World War were exhibited. Every Independence Day, the Indian Prime Minister raises the flag here in Red Fort. I had a great time travelling to the Red Fort.

On the full moon day in October, I went to see the Taj Mahal, the Crown of the World with a few of my schoolmates. Following the passing of his wife Mumtaj Mahal, Shahjahan built this magnificent monument as a tribute to his unwavering love for her. It is claimed to have taken 22 years to construct, during which time 20,000 workers were employed. A stunning landscape surrounds the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal stands on the banks of the river Jamuna and is made of white marble stone. People travel from all over the world to witness this miracle of wonders. On a moonlit night, every aspect of the structure is really beautiful. Its attractiveness is enhanced by the Jamuna flowing nearby. It was a truly magnificent experience for me that I will never forget.

I visited Qutub Minar with my family last Sunday. Even though we live in Delhi, we had never been to see the minaret from up close. Qutub Minar is among Delhi's most intriguing tourist attractions. We hired a tour guide from the tourist office area located in the premises of the historical monument. While giving us a tour he told us about many interesting historical facts about the monument.

Interesting Facts | Qutub Minar is the world's tallest brick-built minaret, at 72.5 metres high. UNESCO has designated it as a World Heritage Site. This minaret is regarded as the symbol of triumph. Qutub-Ud-In Aibak, a deputy employed by Muhammad of Ghor, began building this minaret in Delhi as a memoir of victory. The building of the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan served as inspiration for the design of the Qutub Minar. Hence, the Afghani and Indo-Islamic architecture is evident in the design of the minaret. It is regarded as the Delhi Sultanate's emblem.

Architecture | The Qutub Minar features five storeys that are constructed in various timelines and symbolise various historical events. Beautiful balconies extend from each storey, making it a one-of-a-kind minaret. Marble and red sandstone were used to construct the tower. On the northeastern side of qutub minar, Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, India's first mosque, was built in 1198. After over 169 years, the lighting-damaged monument underwent renovations and gained two more floors under the reign of the modern Delhi Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlak. He completed the building by adding a dome or cupola to the top. These stories were crafted from white sandstone and marble. In this tower, the colour difference is fairly noticeable. Due to an earthquake that caused the minaret to shake and tumble, this dome is no longer visible. In the British era, Major R. Smith, a member of the British Empire's Royal Engineers, reconstructed the upper section in 1823 using a "Chhatri," or Bengali-style architecture. This upper section is still visible above the fifth storey.

Places We Saw | The interior of the minaret was quite interesting to explore because it had elaborate carvings and lovely patterns that date back more than 900 years. We also saw the minaret's iron pillar which was constructed in the fourth century AD. For 1600 years, the iron pillar stood the test of time. It is almost all wrought iron and hasn't rusted yet.

Our tour guide also took us to visit the tomb of Adham Khan, a minister in Akbar's imperial court, located not far from Qutub Minar. It dates back to the 16th century. Due to the murder of one of Akbar's closest ministers by Adham Khan, the emperor mandated that an octagonal tomb be built rather than a hexagonal one to signify that it is a traitor's tomb. The monument was a large tomb with magnificent archways.

This minaret has a lengthy history, having been built and restored by numerous Indian kings. It is also an illustration of the diverse Indian culture that emerged through several dynasties.I had a great time visiting the Qutub Minar. It was an unforgettable experience that provided us a glimpse of the great heritage of our country.

A Visit to a Historical Place Taj Mahal

If you are in India, then a visit to the historical sites would be incomplete without visiting the Taj Mahal. Also, if you stay in any corner of the world, and love to visit historical places, then the Taj Mahal is a must-visit place. 

It is one of the seven wonders of the world and is also known as “The Crown of The World”. Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 to 1653, it is an immense mausoleum of white marble. More than 20000 men were put to work to complete the structure for 22 years.

It is considered a symbol of love, as Shah Jahan built it as a symbol of love for his wife, Mumtaj Mahal. It is built on the banks of the Yamuna River. The Taj Mahal is embedded in an amazing garden that has cypress trees, beautiful flowers , and even fountains in some places. 

The garden also has smooth green lawns and glowing flowers spread across it. These pretty stuffs do add to the beauty of the Taj Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is surrounded by four tall minarets made of white marble, one in each corner of the platform. From a distance, it looks small and delicate, but if we get closer to the Taj Mahal and stand near the marble steps, the dome seems so big as if it is touching the sky.

This has become a great piece of work for which our country is proud. Whenever you visit the Taj Mahal, you’ll notice that people from different parts of the world will be there to experience this wonderful place.

Each and every part of the site is very attractive, and it becomes even more beautiful in the moonlight.

A Visit to a Historical Place Murshidabad (West Bengal)

Murshidabad, a historically old place, was the capital of undivided Bengal before the British Raj. It is a rural destination home to several historical and tourist sites. It is actually a district located on the banks of river Bhagirathi. In the year 1773, the state capital was shifted from Murshidabad to Kolkata.

When we went to Murshidabad, the first place we visited was the Hazarduari Palace. As the name suggests, it is a palace with a thousand doors and was built in the year 1837 for Nawab Najim Humayun-Jah. 

We got to know that there were 114 rooms, 8 galleries, and a museum located inside the palace, and it is considered an excellent piece of architecture.

The next best attraction in Murshidabad is the Nasipur Royal Palace, which was built by the 19th-century king Kritichand Bahadur. This palace is popularly known for tax collection under British rule.

When we went there, we noticed that the palace had deteriorated and been damaged throughout the years. However, the remains of her palace have been well preserved, and hence is is one of the most popular attractions in this region.

Murshidabad’s Kathgola Palace is another amazing location in Murshidabad. This was originally the baking house of Jagat Seths, the Jain family of the region. The palace houses some rare artefacts of historical importance. One should never miss a visit to this site.

A Visit to a Historical Place Qutub Minar and Red Fort (Delhi)

A visit to a historical monument is always an exciting experience and a fascinating adventure. The Qutub Minar is one such site that has a lot to offer.

The Qutub Minar is the landmark of Delhi and one of the most prestigious monuments of Indian heritage. 

When we visited Qutub Minar, the place was already filled with visitors. One must need a tourist guide if he wants to visit the place in its entirety.

Qutub Minar is one of the tallest monumental structures in India. In the year 1119, Qutub-ud-din Aibak started its construction, but it was completed by his successor Iltutmish. It is about 72.5 m high and has 379 steps to reach the top of the tower.

Apart from Qutub Minar, there is another fascinating site located in Delhi. The Red Fort is a symbol of Mughal power and majesty. In the year 1648, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built it, and it is completely made up of red stone. 

Located on the banks of the Yamuna river, it is one of several monumental wonders of India. Every year, on Independence Day, the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the Red Fort. 

It is a site that we usually visit, as travel and accommodations are easier for this location. Located in central Delhi, it is a monument of utmost significance for modern Indian history.

A Visit to a Historical Place Sivasagar (Assam)

Sivasagar, a region in Assam, houses a number of historical sites and monuments. During our visit to the place, we took a bus from Guwahati to Sivasagar. There are a lot of beautiful natural scenery and tea gardens on the way.

Sivasagar is a region that is known for its tea and oil industries. However, apart from it, here are some tourist spots in the area.

Sivadol, it is actually a group of monuments that house the temples of Sivadol, Visnudol, and Devidol. Some other shrines and a museum are also located in this region.

Rang Ghar is a two-storied building that was once a sports pavilion for royal kings and nobles. From Sivasagar town, we travelled for 3 km to reach the place.

Karng Ghar is also known as The Gorgaon Palace. It is located at about 15kms from the Sivasagar town, and one has to travel by either bus or local fare to reach there. Made in 1747, the palace is surrounded by a 5km long wall that is worth seeing in this region.

A Visit to a Historical Place Golden Temple (Punjab)

The Golden Temple is a wonderful holy shrine located in Amritsar, Punjab . Its original name is Sri Harmandir Sahib, but it is more popularly known as the Golden Temple. It is the holiest place in Sikhism, and when we went there, we saw thousands of Sikhs. 

Furthermore, Sikhs visit the place on a daily basis, as it is an important place for them besides being a tourist site.

Amongst the fascinating features of this temple is that it looks alluring in its golden color. It has a glittering golden dome that makes it appear so beautiful. The entire temple is a two-storey monument. 

There is also a golden leaf of about 400 kg located on the upper half of the temple. It is the architecture of the temple that gives it a beautiful look and enhances the pleasing appearance of the shrine. 

The structure looks even more beautiful at night due to the temple’s reflection on the water.

Historical places are of utmost importance to us and also to our nation. They are important not because they are a good tourist spot to generate money but because they preserve the rich cultural heritage of a region. 

Anyone who travels there learns a lot of things about the site and gets a new experience. We really had so much fun and memorable experience when we visited those sites.

A Visit to a Historical Place Essay

Having got an invitation from a friend of mine to visit his home in Delhi I started one September morning and arrived there in the evening. After a stay of two days there, we proceeded to Agra to see the wonderful Taj. I shall never forget my first sight of Taj Mahal as I looked at it in the light of the full moon.

The Taj stands outside the city of Agra on the bank of the river Yamuna. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum over the grave of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is an everlasting token of the Emperor’s great love for his beloved queen. It cost him about 3 crores of rupees.

It is said that it took 20 years to build and that 20000 workmen were employed on the work. Skilful workman, sculptors, painters, and architects were sent for from all lands.

The Taj is one of the wonders of the world and the greatest treasure of the Mughal architecture. It is a great Masterpiece of artistic design.

It was in the evening, just before sunset that I went there. On passing through the entrance the first thing that struck my eyes was a beautiful water-course lined with Cypress trees.

The Taj itself lies in the spacious Park. It is surrounded by rows of palm and Cypress trees smooth green lawns fountains with transparent water beds of growing flowers and smooth straight walks.

The great tomb stands on a huge platform made of white marble. At each corner of the platform stands tall slender white marble minaret that seems to guard this precious monument like a sentinel.

On approaching it I found that it was very large and stately. The main dome which is about 275 feet high, seems to soar into the blue sky. Besides the main dome, there are two other domes one on each side.

The walls of the domes are decorated with precious stones of various colours. The pretty screens of the carved marble add to its fairy-like beauty. Below, it is the Hall of Death where the loving hearts lie side by side.

But the beauty of the Taj becomes 100-fold when it is seen in the light of the full moon. It looks like a building of pearls or a palace made of silver. It is, in fact, the greatest wonder of the world.

Mohenjo-Daro is an old city in Pakistan, way back from around 2600 BCE. That’s a super long time ago! It was part of the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the first cities in the world. The people who lived there were smart – they had good city planning, nice streets, and clever drainage systems. It’s incredible to think about how they organized their city, and I was amazed to learn that they even had multi-story buildings. It shows how advanced they were for their time.

Mohenjo-Daro is like a time capsule. The things they left behind, like pots, seals, and statues, show us how they lived. The city planning shows they liked order and neatness. It’s like a big puzzle that tells us about their culture and how creative they were. The Dancing Girl statue, with its graceful pose, made me feel like I could almost hear the music from their ancient celebrations. Visit to such place definitely enriches our historical knowledge and helps the students to gather concrete experiences which they read in books. Today we are going to write about the visiting of two historical places –  Visit to historical place Agra  and  Visit to historical place Murshidabad. 

● Visit to Historical Place Agra

I had a long cherished dream of visiting Agra since my childhood. The chance came sooner than expected. Agra is famous for many historical monuments and incomparable beauty of the Taj Mahal. Last summer vacation, I had a chance of visiting Agra. I went there with my family members and stayed there for three days. 

      Delhi, specially the Old Delhi, is a place of historical interest. This is the place bears the banner of Incredible India for the tourists. I heard a lot about the matchless beauty of the Taj Mahal. But all descriptions paled into insignificance when I actually saw it before me.

The Taj is built of snow-white transparent marble by emperor Shajahan on the grave of his beloved wife Mumtaz Begam. The walls and ceilings are inlaid with precious stones. When we visited the Taj on moonlit night, we could hardly believe our eyes. It is a thing to dream of, beyond description in words. The charm of the Taj has remained matchless for ever. 

    The next day, we visited the Agra Fort, the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas. We paid a visit to Fatehpur Sikri. Here I saw the ruins of a new capital city built by Akbar in honour of a Muslim saint, Salim Chisti. The most splendid thing this was the gateway of victory with a long flight of steps. We visited the Parliament House. This was my first historical visit to a place but I will ever remember the beauty of the Taj – ” A thing of beauty, is a joy for ever”.

India is indeed incredible for its enrichment of culture, tradition and history. To explore the historical landmarks, I went to Murshidabad with my family during the last vacation.       

Murshidabad is a place named after Nawab Murshidkuli Khan. It is situated at West Bengal, in Eastern India. When I visited palaces, castles, mosques, monuments in Murshidabad, it seemed that I was turning living pages of history reigned by the Nawabs of Bengal.       

We saw the sight-seeing places by tanga (a cart driven by horse). At first we visited the Hazarduari. It is a huge palatial building built by Nawab Nazim Humayan Jha on the banks of the river Bhagirathi. From our guide I came to know that Hazarduari means a palace with 1000 doors; out of which only 100 doors are real and 900 are false.

The building carries the feature of Indo-European architecture. The most interesting was the huge flight of stairs in front of the building. Hazarduari is now turned into a museum where I saw the weapons used by the Nawabs of Bengal. I saw many precious paintings, and the throne of Nawab there.      

Next, we went to the Motijhil, a big tank. We saw Khasbag where Nawab Alibordy Khan lay buried. We also visited the Kathgola Palace which was built by Laksmipath Singh Dugar. It was a beautiful place surrounded by a vast garden. Lastly, I saw the tomb of Nawab Siraj-Ud-Dullah.       

My visit to Murshidabad brought me to the historical days reigned by the Nawabs of Bengal. It was really a memorable visit.

Finally, on a fixed date, I left Delhi with a train for Agra. The journey was really good and I enjoyed the journey by train .

It’s an amazement for the civilized architectures that is pretty impossible to build a building like this. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built in upon his loving wife Mumtaj Mahal’s graveyard. These are the reasons behind my visit to Hawa Mahal.  

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur This amazing building is so big with more than 953 intricate windows. This is one of the most important tourist attractions in Jaipur. Lots of Indians and foreigners arrive daily to enjoy the beauty of Hawa Mahal. This amazing architectural building has got the name ‘Palace of Winds’, because of its look-alike honeycomb.    

Conclusion: I enjoyed the time very much in Hawa Mahal, Jaipur. Now I wish to visit more historic place in my country. I am suggesting and recommending everyone to visit Jaipur. It’s an amazing place for travelers. You will have so much fun and new experiences that will blow your mind.

Qutb-ud-din Aibak was the first ruler in North India and this monument has gotten its name from him. There are lots of verses of Quran in it, mostly written in Arabic. Quwwat-Ul-Islam Masjid, the very first mosque in India is located near Qutub Minar. It has amazing construction and has not been damaged even after 2000 years.  

What I Saw There? I was always loved seeing new places and especially the places are related to our history. Qutub Minar is a really popular monument and related to our history. That’s why I thought to be there. I enjoyed my time there and it was a very fun moment for me. The place was full of tourists and lots of them are foreigners. I always love to interact with foreigner peoples. I talked with a few of them; it was a very good experience for me.  

Conclusion: We should explore historical places like Qutub Minar more and more. It will let us learn about our history. It will help us to gather more knowledge.

A Historical Place in India: Red Fort is one of the oldest and beautiful monuments in India. It was constructed over ten years from 1638 to 1648. Once Shah Jahan moved the capital from Agra to Delhi, in that time they were using this fort as Qila-e-Mubarak. This is the place where the president gives his speech on an independent day. An interesting fact about Red Fort is, it’s actually constructed with white color but in the British ruling time they painted it with Red. There is a place in Red Fort named ‘Rang Mahal’. If you visit this place, you must be there. I loved that beautiful place.

It’s the place where the wives of the Emperor, mistresses, and maids stayed. Actually, I am from Mumbai and I have a wish to visit Red Form from a long time ago. One of my friends Satish was staying in South Delhi, he was asking me to visit his place. I was pretty much free because of my winter vacation and that’s why I decided to visit him and gather some traveling experience. The train journey was pretty enjoyable. I was being on a train for the very first time. I was really excited. I was truly amazed to see the natural beauty of India. I loved it.  

Why Should We Visit Historic Places? We often need to visit historic places. To learn the history will enrich our knowledge and let us understand about our ancestors. Lots of historic places have really amazing beauty to explore. Some of them have so many things to learn from. If we visit such places, we will be able to learn so much about our past culture, music, architect, etc. We need to visit personally and need to inspire others for visiting such amazing places. There are lots of places to see in India. We should start exploring them.  

Conclusion: After all, it was an amazing experience for me to visit a historical place like Red Fort. I learned so much about our ancestors, our history and tradition. A Historical Place that I Visited: A few weeks ago my friend Kamal called me and asked me to spend the summer vacation in his place. I was agreed and left me on a train journey and arrived in Agra. Agra is one of the most beautiful cities in India. And we all know that it’s popular because of the Taj Mahal . Yes, I am going to share my experience of visiting the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal has a really brief history. It the time of Mughal Emperors, Shah Jahan built it to express his love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Then it has been named as ‘Taj Mahal’. My intention behind going to Agra was the Taj.

I have never been in this amazing city and never saw this historic place and that’s why I thought not to miss this chance. This beautiful architectural monument is located bank of river Yamuna. It’s one of the biggest rivers in the subcontinent. It is said that more than 20000 workers worked for 20 years to build this building. So you can imagine how big it is. I was surprised to see the artistic design in the wall and doors. It’s pretty much impossible to do in this time. This Taj is one of the best examples of Mughal architecture.  

Things to See There: There are so many things to see in the Taj. I suggest everyone be there in the afternoon. In the time of sunset, the whole scenario is unbelievable beautiful. I just loved the entire scene. It’s dreamy and loving for me. I wish to be here one time as a couple. The most important thing to see in the Taj is its architectural designs. If you understand modern architecture, you will be surprised and amazed at how it that possible to build such an amazing thing at that time.  

How to Go There from Delhi? There are so many easy ways to visit Agra from Delhi. The best way to go there is a train. I went there by train. The main railway station in Agra is Agra Cantonment (AGC). It is better to depart from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM), Delhi. In the winter season, the trains are delayed due to fog problem. There are so many trains to go Agra from Delhi. You can also visit with the bus, but I suggest and prefer train due to safety causes. A journey by train is more entertaining than a bus journey.

I really enjoyed the entire journey. I was alone but made few friends on the train who were going into the same destination. I have never been on a train journey often, so it was pretty confusing and hesitating for me. But at the end of the day, the journey was amazing and super.  

Conclusion: A very big number of tourists visit this historic place every day. People from all across the world come to see this symbol of love; they come to make their love stronger with this example of real love.

Last year, I went to experience a historical place ( Fatehpur Sikri ) that is located in Agra. Fatehpur Sikri is a town where lakhs of tourists come to see it every year.

I also went to see the place very closely with my family.

2. How did we start?

After Holi, our family members decided to visit one of the historical places in India. At last, they came to the conclusion that they would go to visit Fatehpur Sikri.

About a week after Holi, we all left for Agra by car. Almost after five hours, we reached Agra.

But being late at night, we decided to stay in a hotel. Our hotel was very luxurious and full of facilities. The hotel was very close to the place that we wanted to visit.

When it was morning, all our family members got ready and set out from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri by car.

3. Distance and Time

Actually, the distance from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri is about thirty-six kilometers via the Bikaner-Agra route. It took us about 35 to 40 minutes by car to cover such a distance.

We enjoyed ourselves a lot on the way.

This route was so good that whenever I decide to go to Fatehpur Sikri in the future, I will choose this path only.

4. Why and who built it?

When we reached Fatehpur Sikri, we hired a guide. He told everything about Fatehpur Sikri.

The first thing that we came to know from our guide was that the place was founded by Akbar when he conquered Gujrat.

Moreover, he told us a lot of surprising things about Buland Darwaza that is situated in Fatehpur Sikri.

He told us that it’s the highest gate in the world, it’s a grand specimen of Architecture and Indian art, it was built more than four hundred years ago, etc.

We saw the real palace of Jodha Bai and the court hall. However, the palace was not in good condition but we were amazed to see this.

5. What impressed me the most?

Well, I was very curious to see this place beforehand but when I entered the town, I was surprised because I got to see a lot of excellent buildings there such as Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, Salim Chishti’s Dargah, etc.

The building that impressed me the most was the Buland Darwaza.

When I was on the stairs of the Buland Darwaza, I felt that I was in Egypt.

Additionally, I was feeling very proud of Indian workmanship. It literally gave me a glimpse of India’s past glory.

6. Conclusion

At last, I would say that I saw many amazing buildings in Fatehpur Sikri and learnt a lot from those buildings.

But, I was very sad to know that the city was deserted by the same man who built it. So, if you want to see the real architecture of ancient people, you must go there.

There are many historical places in our country and Agra is one of them. Although Agra is known for many things but it’s very illustrious for the Taj Mahal.

Every year lakhs of people come to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal.

One day I asked my family members to visit Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Everyone was very happy hearing this and after about 2 weeks we left for Agar to see the Taj Mahal.

When we reached the place where the Taj Mahal is located, I was astonished for a while because I had never seen such a beautiful place and building.

Since I had already read about the Taj in my books, I was telling my family everything about it such as why and who built it?, construction techniques, used materials, etc.

Hence, No one hired any guide.

The view around the Taj Mahal was very spectacular. There were many ornamental trees that adorned the place.

There were also pools of water at some places.

When I saw the real Taj, I didn’t believe that there would have been such architecture even in the olden times. There were a lot of foreigners who were shooting for the Taj and taking pictures. Overall, I enjoyed a lot there. When I came back home, I wished to see it again with my friends.

Historical Place Essay 250 Words or Essay on a Visit to a Historical Place for Class 10 –

One day, our school teachers planned to visit a historical place. After about two weeks, we set out for a historical place that was in Delhi.

When we were heading to Delhi by bus, we decided to visit the Red Fort.

Since we left the school early in the morning, we reached the Red Fort at 3 pm.

Well, many of us had already visited this place but they were wishing to visit it again as they wanted to collect more information under proper guidance.

Since all the history teachers were in the charge of the journey, we didn’t need any guide there. The teachers gathered us at one place and bought tickets for us.

As we entered the Red Fort, we all felt as if we had landed on Mars as the view all around was red which looked great.

Moreover, our history teachers started telling more about the fort.

There were two rows of shops where art and handicraft items were being sold. The place where the shops were located was known as the Meena Bazar in the Mughal time.

After that, we saw many places inside the Red Fort such as Diwan-e-Aam known as the Hall of Public Audience, Rang Mahal, Khas Mahal, War Memorial Museum etc.

When teachers were telling us about these places, we were creating a scenario in our minds so that we could connect things to the Mughal period.

As a result, we all had entered the Mughal period which was giving us great pleasure.

When we came out of the fort, we all went to a restaurant and had a good dinner.

Overall, the experience was great and while returning from there we thought of visiting another historical place with the same teachers.

Straightaway we were ready to start off. In a hired taxi, we reached the elegant tomb in half an hour. The four magnificent minarets of the tomb presented an exquisite view. A high wall and an elegantly decorated big gate guarded the mausoleum of the great emperor. The tomb occupies the heart of a fragrant park. The park was aromatically studded with colourful buds .and blooming flowers. The flowers “fluttering land dancing in the breeze” presented a spectacular sight. The fruit trees were blossoming. Birds perched on the twigs and boughs were twittering. Impressed by the “soft incense hanging upon the bough” and “many incense-bearing trees” I began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:

“Ah, happy, happy boughs that cannot shed Your leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu”

In front of the grand tomb, a lovely fountain was sprinkling its light shower. The drizzling of hoary drops of the fountain was producing the resonance of ultimate excellence.

Soon afterwards, we entered the majestic edifice of Mughal Art containing the sepulchre of the emperor. What a life of luxury and opulence he had enjoyed; but now he was lying desolate and deserted in the sheer calm of infinity.

The walls of the room were adorned with oral and mosaic design. There were curious colourful patterns signifying the mystery of death. We offered “Fateha” and prayed to God to be Merciful and Beneficent to the departed soul. As a whole, the building is a marvellous specimen of Muslim architecture, unique and matchless in its beauty and structure.

We came up to the terrace and had a view of Lahore from there. It was a startling sight. The cool breeze, a canopy of silvery clouds over our heads and the prevailing aroma of the blooming flowers made the panorama charismatic that it had a lasting impact on our memory. We spent the rest of our time in eating the meal, drinking tea and making some of the sketches of the floral designs we had just observed in the vest chamber of the tomb. When the brightness of the day faded into the descending dusk, we hesitatingly headed home. Our minds were full of solemn thoughts, We were pondering over the mystery of death. We all agreed with Shakespeare:

“In Nature’s infinite book of secrecy A little I can read”.

We wished to visit some historical places because they are our cultural heritage. So, we chose Jahangir’s Tomb as our picnic point. We reached the tomb in the morning at 10. The weather was very pleasant.

The splendid building of the tomb was very impressive. There was greenery all around. A cool breeze was blowing. Birds were chirping in the trees. There were vast lawns, open spaces and flowers of different colours.

  Jahangir’s Tomb is the best place for a family picnic. There, we enjoyed ourselves very much. Everyone was taking interest in the remarkable structure of the building, matchless beauty of the lawns and historical significance of the Tomb.

At about 2 o’clock, we sat under a shady tree. My mother spread the table cloth on the ground and put our things on it.  Mother had prepared many tasty dishes. We took some meal and had some rest.

Then we played cricket in a grassy park. It was a source of great amusement. My elder brother told some interesting anecdotes. We sang together some national and film songs.

In the evening, we packed our belongings and our way home. Our hearts were saturated. It was a picnic of full enjoyment and recreation.

Our school had already announced that we were going to see the Taj Mahal. We were elated and were wondering how thrilling, and exciting this experience would be. We had heard and read about it- there was a full chapter in our history book on Taj Mahal, but now we were about to see it for real.

Our principal and teachers had planned for all of us to visit the Taj Mahal on a full moon night. We were told that on the full moon night the monument looks even more glamorous and glorious, and it makes for a splendid spectacle. This added even more excitement to the previous announcement. We would have had to stay awake the whole night but so what? For such a wonderful experience, it was not a big deal.

We were asked to assemble on a Saturday afternoon at the school campus. We were instructed to carry our packed dinner-boxes and water bottles. We were strictly prohibited from buying any eatables there or littering the Taj Garden’s premises. We were warned against buying the souvenirs from the crafty hawkers. These instructions and warnings were repeated to us over and over again. First by our Principal, then by the respective teachers who were in charge of our groups into which we were divided.

We had brought consent from our parents in writing for this trip. From Delhi to Agra, we had to travel by bus, it was around a 5 hours journey. We assembled at the school campus at the given time, and were divided into groups. The teachers took charge of the respective groups, our teacher in charge asked us to stand in a queue, she called out our names from a list that she carried. The items each one of us was carrying were inspected, and then we went ahead to board the buses. 

As we started to move out of the school campus, we all hailed the school with three cheers in a chorus and the journey began. After about 5 hours we were told that we were at The Taj Mahal. The full moon was shining in the sky right above us. The premises seemed like it was filled with the milky hue. We left our buses at a little distance and stepped down. Again, our teachers called out our names from the lists, and we all stood in a straight line. We followed our teacher and walked towards the monument.

After a little while, we were at the main gate of The Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal glowed in the full moonlight in its grandeur. We all felt wonderstruck by the majesty, beauty, and opulence of the dome structure. The moonlit premises added elegance to the mystique. The Taj Mahal resembled a white swan standing still in a sprawling milk lake. The fountains on the campus were bubbling and bursting along the pathway. The fountains were flanked by the green lawns on either side. It was heavily crowded. Men, women, and children were trying to find a way for themselves. There were so many foreigners looking at the monument like they were totally wonderstruck.

We had to ramble to make it to the main platform, took off our shoes at the entrance, and were up on the main platform on which stood the great monument. The four minarets stood like sentinels on the four corners. After about two hours of wandering and rejoicing around the ‘Dream in Marble’, we came down to the lawns to open our dinner packets. Thereafter, it was time to begin our return journey.

Last Sunday, I visited the Taj Mahal with my family. It was a dream come true for us to have visited the architectural marvel about which we have heard so much and had read so much in our books. We started feeling proud of our country to have this magnificent form of art.

Our history teacher asked us to assemble at a place and started explaining how the Mughal emperor Shahjahan got this monument built as a mausoleum for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. He had stated his desire to be buried by her side after his death. So, there were the two graves inside the mausoleum placed side by side.

We roamed around, kept adoring the astounding beauty, and were amazed at the artistry of the fine carvings. How gifted must those hands be which created that piece of art with so much artistry, we pondered. We looked at the Taj Mahal at one glance and in the second looked at the full moon in the sky. The Taj Mahal looked no less marvellous than the moon in the sky.

River Yamuna flows on the backside of this magnificent monument. It was as if the Yamuna was washing the feet of this marvellous wonder with a full sense of gratitude. For two hours, we went around this monument only rejoicing and wondering.

The Allahabad Fort was on my trip. Much has changed since then, yet the Allahabad Fort remains. Because of its superior architecture and beauty, Akbar ordered its construction in 1583. Three of the city’s main entrances include towers. This is because the Ganga and Yamuna rivers flow east and south. Just like the Agra Fort, this gate has a lot of hefty outworks. Built on the Mughal empire’s eastern frontier, this fort symbolised the empire’s eastward advance. When Allahabad began, it was a major metropolis.

This caused the fort’s roof to collapse, destroying much of its former splendour. Allahabad was originally part of the Magadha Empire, and I instantly recognised the Ashoka pillar. The pillar has an ode to Samudragupta, the Magadha ruler, which I read aloud.

I visited the famed Prayag relic, Patalpuri Temple, one of the oldest remaining pre-Muslim buildings. Close to the arsenal’s northern wall sits this shrine. It seems the fort was built to be erected far higher than the temple.

The Akshaya Var tree was again in my path as I continued walking. This tree’s wish-fulfilling well is said to be a popular destination for folklore lovers. Akbar stopped it. The Mughal Governor’s (Military Commander’s) pavilion, however, was  most inviting with Beautiful pillars. They had impeccable taste.

The British decided to demolish a considerable portion of the fort to make place for a school, reducing its beauty. At present, the historic palace is now an arsenal.

Then I went back to Triveni for a swim. I lauded the Ganga’s merits after my Allahabad Fort visit. Comparing the old and new forts at Allahabad, it is evident that the old fort at Allahabad is in ruins, while the new fort at Allahabad demonstrates neglect.

Describe a Trip to a Historical Site in Ten Lines

The Principal addressed the assembly, announcing a visit to Agra’s Taj Mahal. The students are ecstatic.

The Taj Mahal is immortal. It may have been the beauty concretized in pure white marble. It may have been called a joy forever, but unfortunately in the materialistic world of today, even the beauty of the Taj Mahal is in danger because of the effluent Nitrous oxide and Sulphur dioxide being emitted by the Mathura refinery. Let us hope the scientists are able to find a fix and can save our Taj Mahal.

T HE conversion of Russia will not be the work of man, no matter how gifted he may be, but that of the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, the Mediatrix of all graces, because this is God’s wish, which he revealed to the world in 1917. The life and works of Vladimir Soloviev are a perfect illustration of this truth of Fatima. He whom our Father regards as « the greatest Russian genius of the 19th century », was in his own way a prophet of the “ conversion ” of his beloved Country, announcing the necessity of her returning to the bosom of the Roman Church. «  Rome or chaos  », such was his catchphrase, Rome whose anagram is not a matter of chance, but a providential sign, a definition: ROMA , AMOR . Led by this incomparable guide, we would like « to anticipate in our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers this consecration, this long-awaited conversion, which must mark the beginning of a time of sacred peace throughout the world, the beginning of the universal reign of the Most Blessed and Immaculate Heart of Mary, and through Her, of God’s Kingdom » (English CRC, December 1982, p. 23).

A PERSONAL CONVERSION

Whereupon in 1872 a mysterious encounter with “  Wisdom  ” suddenly shook him out of the scientific naturalism in which he had been vegetating and made him aware, as he says, of invisible Beauty, the “  Sophia tou théou  ”, the daughter of God. He thus became the fervent witness of Wisdom’s indwelling in the world and of Her desire for total incarnation and universal queenship. His quest for wisdom, scientific, aesthetic and mystical, had commenced. He was nineteen years old. The quest would never end for this new style Russian pilgrim ; it would be of an unparalleled fruitfulness despite its touching brevity. He died of exhaustion in 1900, at the age ! » (English CRC, December 1982, p. 35)

We will limit ourselves in this article to his prophetic insights on the Union of the Churches. In his Lessons on Theandry (1878) – he was then twenty-five ! – our philosopher applies himself to contemplating the Wisdom of God at work in history, perfectly incarnated in Jesus and His virginal Mother, as well as in the Church as she awaits her eschatological transfiguration. The most serious sin, throughout this history, has been that of schism. Who is responsible for this vast Vladimir Soloviev began by throwing all responsibility for it on the Catholic Church, so much so that he provided the inspiration for Dostoyevsky’s famous “ myth of the Grand Inquisitor ” in The Brothers Karamazov . But, at the beginning of the 1880’s, through studying the question more closely, he understood that the sin of schism was in fact that of the East. This was a stroke of genius on his part for which our Father commends him greatly:

« I must beg pardon of my master Msgr. Jean Rupp, of Solzhenitsyn, Volkoff and so many others, but it seems obvious to to me, as it did to Soloviev in the end, that the schism of Moscow in setting itself up as the third Rome was the beginning of all the ills suffered by these admirable Christian peoples of European Russia . And I must say so because this rupture still weighs heavily on the world of today and because it is precisely of this rupture that Our Lady of Fatima speaks when She foretells “  the conversion of Russia  ”. (English CRC, December 1982, p. 24)

Let us follow Soloviev in his commendable mystical conversion which has opened up a path of light for his people, allowing a spring of grace and mercy to gush forth.

AN EVANGELICAL DISCOURSE

In 1881, Soloviev published a long article, still very antipapist, entitled Spiritual power in Russia . There the pope was presented as Antichrist institutionalised ! Our theorist placed all his hope in the regenerative mission of Holy Russia and in the Tsar who was to be her « divine figure, religious guide and animating wisdom ». But were the Russian people still capable of accomplishing such One particular event was to shake Soloviev’s patriotic faith. On March 1, 1881, Alexander II was assassinated by revolutionaries. A few days later, Soloviev gave a Discourse in which he recommended that his successor, Alexander III, show mercy to the regicides. Certainly not as a matter of weakness or abdication before the Revolution, even less out of the spirit of non-violence that a certain Tolstoy was already preaching, but « as an example of Russian piety », that famous podwig « which lies at the heart of the Russian people’s evangelical soul, of which the tsar is the living icon ». Alas, Soloviev was not understood... This was a painful stage in his life, the first step he had taken beyond his master Dostoyevsky.

The following year, he published another article entitled “  Schism in the Russian people and society  ”. Delving deep into the past, he accused Metropolitan Nikon of having broken, at the time of Peter the Great, the communion, the Sobornost , so beloved of the Russian people, by excommunicating Raskol, the fierce guardian of traditional popular religion... Ever since then, the Orthodox hierarchy, enslaved to the imperial power, had proved powerless to govern and sanctify Orthodoxy. It was nothing now but a shrunken, secularized “ local Church ” which, if it were to be restored and revived, would need to open itself up to “ the universal Church ”.

In the spring of 1882, Soloviev was powerfully affected by an unusual dream. In his dream he met a high-ranking Catholic ecclesiastic and entreated him to give him his blessing. The priest refused, so Soloviev insisted, declaring, « The separation of the Churches is the most disastrous thing possible. » Finally, the ecclesiastic agreed to give him his blessing.

This premonitory dream was to awaken in Vladimir Soloviev a burning desire for reconciliation with Catholicism, and to stimulate him to write a series of articles to be published every month in his friend Aksakov’s slavophile newspaper Rouss and then to be collected together in a work with the resonant title: The Great Controversy and Christian Politics . One particular maxim constantly reappeared under the Russian writer’s pen:

«  FIRST AND FOREMOST WE MUST WORK TO RESTORE THE UNITY OF THE CHURCH, AND TO MAKE THE FIRE OF LOVE BURN IN THE HEART OF CHRIST’S SPOUSE . »

By an irony of fate, the term “ Controversy ”, which for Soloviev referred to the conflict between Rome and the East, was going to give place to a bitter controversy between himself and his Orthodox and slavophile friends.

A MARVELLOUS AND ADORABLE WISDOM

T HE world’s beauty appeared to Soloviev as a living figure, a real existence, changing and yet immortal. He saw her and held her as the queen of his spiritual universe under her venerable name of Sancta Sophia . At the end of his life, in 1898, he celebrated the Three Encounters he had had with this Beauty which for him was Wisdom.

“ Three times in his life he had been overwhelmed by the radiant visit of Wisdom who appeared to him in the form of an absolutely heavenly female being, dazzling him and enlightening him profoundly. Not without reason certain authors think that all his religious and even philosophical works derive from this illumination. ”

And let us immediately point out, in order to acclimatize the Western reader who is highly likely to be disconcerted by these accounts, that trustworthy interpreters of Soloviev have attributed a marian character to these visions. For them, the whole of the Philosopher’s work derives from the AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA . “ It is a marvellous perspective ”, adds Msgr. Rupp. “ Wisdom is closely allied to the Immaculate who is its seat. ” ( Le message ecclésial de Soloviev , p. 340)...

What I am going to say next will perhaps surprise my reader. Nothing is more biblical than this vision, and I am astonished at the astonishment of theologians and their impatient criticisms. This Sophia was already well known, hymned and even boldly adored by the scribes of the Old Testament under this very name of Wisdom. Far from being “ pantheist ”, this idea, this vision touches the essence of created beings, and is clearly poles apart from the Platonic idea and far more profound than Aristotle’s substance; it lies at the very heart of being, there where nothing exists except relationship to God, the term of a will and a wisdom that are infinite, there where exists a pure reflection, a fragment of the image of God’s beauty.

THE GREAT CONTROVERSY

Dostoyevsky

In January 1883, he fired the opening shots with an open letter to Aksakov: « As I reflected on the means of curing this interior disease (of Christianity), I became convinced that the origin of all these evils lies in the general weakening of the earthly organisation of the visible Church, following her division into two disunited parts. » He demonstrated that, in order to establish herself on earth and to endure throughout history, the Christian religion had need of a higher authority, and he explained that it was therefore essential to restore « the union of all Christian and ecclesiastical forces under the standard and under the power of one central ecclesiastical authority ».

On February 19, Soloviev gave a talk in homage to his master Dostoyevsky. It was almost a panegyric of the Roman Church ! He declared his ardent hope for the reconciliation of the two Churches, for the two parts of the universal Church which should never have been separated and whose centre lay in... Rome . As a result of this speech, he saw himself banned from speaking in public. The newspapers made no mention of his speech. For the first time, and it would not be the last, Soloviev was the victim of the censure of Constantin Petrowitch Pobiedonostev, Russia’s Grand Inquisitor and the Tsar’s adviser on religious matters. Pobiedonostev championed a sacral conception of political power, akin to that of the French legitimists of the time, but he was fiercely Orthodox, and any opening towards the Catholic religion was pitilessly censured.

Soloviev responded to this censure with a smile. So his speech had been described as « infantile chattering » ? « If we are not converted », he said to his friends, « and become like little children again, we will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. » He went on: « When I was a pretentious little boy [teaching German philosophy: Kant, Hegel, Fichte, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche], people listened with great respect to my “ truly infantile ” prattling. And now it is fitting that the only way I can attain the perfection of humility is by everyone ! »

At the same time, he wrote to Aksakov: « It is necessary to defend Catholicism against the false accusations being brought against it... Consequently, in advocating a reconciliation with Catholicism, I assume that Catholicism is not in principle erroneous, for one cannot be reconciled with error . » Now there we have a true ecumenism ! The life of Soloviev, writes our Father, « was ».

To the charge of “ papism ” levelled against him, Soloviev responded in March 1883 with an admirable profession of faith, already Catholic:

« It seems to to me that you concentrate only on “ papism ” whereas I focus first and foremost on the great, holy and eternal Rome, a fundamental and integral part of the universal Church. I believe in this Rome, I bow before it, I love it with all my heart, and with all the strength of my soul I desire its rehabilitation for the unity and integrality of the universal Church. And may I be accursed as a parricide should I ever utter one word of condemnation against the Holy Church of Rome . »

THE REALISATION OF THE DREAM

In May 1883, on the occasion of the coronation of the Emperor Alexander III, the Moscow press complained that too many concessions were being made to restore diplomatic relations with the Vatican broken in 1866, but Soloviev protested: such an agreement was necessary, were it only to improve relations with the Catholics of Poland. The Pope was represented at the ceremony by his special envoy Msgr. Vincenzo Vanutelli. Had not Alexander III written to Leo XIII shortly beforehand: « Never has unity between all Churches and all States been so necessary, in order to realise the wish expressed by Your Holiness of seeing the peoples abandoning the disastrous errors responsible for the social malaise and returning to the holy laws of the Gospel... »

A few days after the ceremony, Soloviev was crossing Moscow in a hired car. Suddenly, he recognized the route he had followed in his dream the previous year. Soon he came to a stop in front of a house from which a Catholic prelate was just leaving: it was Msgr. Vanutelli in person... There was the same hesitation of this latter to give his blessing to a schismatic, and the same entreaties of Soloviev, who finally !

In the summer of 1883, our author wrote two articles on The Catholic Question . According to Soloviev, it was for Russia to take the first step towards the Catholic Church. Imagine !

His articles were not of the sort to leave his readers indifferent. On the Orthodox side, there was an increasing irritation, while on the Catholic side, surprise soon gave way to enthusiasm. The news crossed the borders, spreading to Poland and even to Croatia, where Msgr. Strossmayer was finally seeing his desires realised. The jurisdiction of his diocese of Djakovo extended into Bosnia and Serbia, that is into Orthodox territory. Endowed with a superior intelligence and animated by great apostolic zeal, this Croatian bishop keenly felt the need for a true, intelligent and benevolent ecumenism. He wrote in 1883 to one of his friends, Father Martynov:

« In my opinion, the principal task of the Catholic Church and of the Holy See this century is to draw as closely as possible to the Slav nation, principally the Russian nation . By winning it over to the divine unity of the Catholic Church, we would at the same time win over everyone in the world who still possess a positive faith. »

IN THE RADIANCE OF THE IMMACULATE

In the summer of 1883, Soloviev wrote five long letters to a Russian Uniate priest on the subject of The Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary . At the same time he translated Petrarch’s “ Praise and prayer to the Most Blessed Virgin ”, wherein he contemplated Her “ clothed in the Sun, crowned with stars... Her glance radiating infinity ! ” It is highly significant that Soloviev was simultaneously attracted by the mystery of the Catholic Church and the mystery of the Immaculate Virgin. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was the first Catholic dogma which he embraced, and his favourite painting was the Immaculate Conception by Murillo.

In The Foundations of the Spiritual Life (1884), he exalted the « All Holy and Immaculate » Virgin Mary. In Russia and the Church Universal (1889), he would praise Pope Pius IX for having quoted, in support of his dogmatic definition, the Old Testament texts referring to Wisdom, the “  Sophia  ” of his personal intuitions:

« If, by the substantial Wisdom of God, we were exclusively meant to understand the Person of Jesus Christ, how could we apply to the Blessed Virgin all those texts in the Wisdom books which speak of this Wisdom ? However, this application, which has existed from the very earliest times in the offices of both the Latin and Greek Churches, has today received doctrinal confirmation in the bull of Pius IX on the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin. » (quoted by Msgr. Rupp, Le message ecclésial de Soloviev, p. 338)

In September 1883, when the sixth chapter of The Great Controversy was published, a rumour spread through Moscow that Soloviev had “ passed over ” to Catholicism, but there was no truth in it. Moreover, curious though this may seem to us, he was not looking “ to pass over to Catholicism ”, but only to open Orthodoxy up to the universality of the Roman Church.

His seventh and final chapter aroused a lively debate, one that is ever topical. The question turned on the attitude of the Byzantine Greeks in conflict with the Crusaders of the West. Soloviev wrote: « On the day that Constantinople fell, seeing the Turkish armies poised to attack, the final spontaneously expressed cry of the Greeks was, “ Better Islamic slavery than any agreement with the Latins. ” I do not mention this as a reproach to the unfortunate Greeks. If, in this cry of implacable hatred, there was nothing Christian, then neither has there been anything especially Christian in all the formal and artificial attempts to reunite the Churches… »

Aksakov, his Orthodox pride deeply irritated by this remark, retorted: « What does he mean, nothing Christian ? May the Greeks be blessed a hundred times over for having preferred a foreign yoke and bodily torture to the abandonment of the purity of their faith in Christ and for having thus preserved us from the distortions of papism at the precise moment [ the beginning of the 13th century ! ] when it had reached the height of its deformity. May they win eternal glory for this ! »

Nonetheless, Soloviev continued his search for truth, surmounting every obstacle. His article “  Nine Questions to Father Ivantsov-Platonov  ” published in December 1883, created a deep stir even in the West. Here he put nine questions to his former master in Orthodoxy on those points of controversy which set the Church of the East against the Church of Rome. Here is the setting:

« How is it that the countries of the East are separated from the Roman Church ? Did the latter proclaim an heretical proposition ? One would be hard pushed to maintain this, for the addition of the Filioque to the Creed, which is put forward to justify the separation, does not have the character of a heresy. Furthermore, it is absurd to say that the Roman Church is in a state of schism with regard to the Eastern Churches. Thus, the latter’s separation from the former has no basis. Let us acknowledge this and, putting aside all human viewpoints, let us work towards Unity or rather let us work so that Unity, which already has a virtual existence, may become a reality. »

THE THREAD OF AN ANCIENT TRADITION

During 1884, the Russian philosopher studied Catholic dogmatics. He read the works of Perrone, the theologian of Gregory XVI and Pius IX, as well as the texts of the Councils. He was particularly interested in Popes Gregory VII and Innocent III, whom he read in the original text.

At the same time he had a great enthusiasm for the Croatian priest George Krijanich who « had come from Zagreb to Moscow in the 17th century to spread the ideal of the Holy Kingdom of God, Roman Catholic and panslavic, gathering together under the sceptre of the tsars and the crook of the Pope all the Slav peoples who would thereby be freed and protected from the twofold burden pressing them on both sides like a vice, the Germanic powers and the Turks. Thus the Croats would work to free themselves from Austrian control and at the same time they would assist the Serbs, their Orthodox brothers, to shake off Moslem domination.

« To realise this grand design, capable at one blow of powerfully advancing the Kingdom of God on earth, Krijanich came to Moscow and preached on the subject of Russia’s reconciliation with Rome . This should not be difficult, he said, because the Russians had only fallen into schism through ignorance and not through heresy or malice. He himself was already preaching that everyone should recognise their own individual faults, be they unconscious or involuntary, and the need for expiation. God’s blessings would follow as a result, immense and eternal blessings. Sergius Mikhailovich Soloviev, our great man’s father, a historian and the author of a monumental history of Russia, admired Krijanich as “ the first of the Slavophiles ” and also, in his eyes, “ the most paradoxical ”, so alien did Catholicism then appear to the Russian consciousness. » (English CRC, December 1982, p. 32)

Soloviev intended to prove the contrary. And it was just at this time that he entered into friendly relations with the Croatian Bishop Strossmayer, thereby resuming the thread of an ancient tradition, one which was apparently marginal but which in reality was pregnant with a splendid future. Early in December 1885, Soloviev for the first time received a letter from the Croatian bishop. He replied to him on December 8, “  the blessed Day of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin  ”:

« On the reunion of the Churches », he wrote, « depends the fate of Russia, the Slavs and the whole world. We Russian Orthodox, and indeed the whole of the East, are incapable of achieving anything before we have expiated the ecclesiastical sin of schism and rendered papal authority its due . » And he ended with these words: « My heart burns with joy at the thought that I have a guide like you. May God long preserve your precious leadership for the good of the Church and the Slav people. » In his pastoral letter of January 1886, the bishop of Djakovo quoted large extracts from this letter.

Encouraged by such support, in 1886 Soloviev undertook a study on Dogmatic development and the question of the reunion of the Churches , which provoked the fury of Orthodoxy. However, at a conference given at the ecclesiastical Academy of Saint Petersburg, Soloviev attempted to justify himself: « I can assure you that I will never pass over to Latinism. » He thereby sought to register his attachment to the Eastern rite. No question for him of adopting the Latin rite ! After that, he set out on a journey to Europe.

FIRST STAY IN ZAGREB (1886)

At the beginning of July, he was the guest of the honourable Canon Racki, President of the Yugoslav Academy of Zagreb, founded by Msgr. Strossmayer, and a personal friend of the latter. Every morning the Orthodox Soloviev assisted at the Catholic Mass with great enthusiasm. He made the sign of the cross in the Catholic manner, but prayed in the Greek manner, crossing his arms on his chest. He willingly admitted to his host – and this was not due to any desire to please on his part – that Croatian Catholics, like the Ukrainians, were more religious than his Orthodox compatriots !

Following an article published in the Croatian journal Katolicki List , Soloviev for the first time encountered opposition from a Catholic priest.

During his stay in Zagreb, he also published a letter in the Russian newspaper Novoie Vremia , wherein he refuted the widespread opinion in Russia that the Croats were the instruments of the Austro-Hungarian government’s attempt to Latinize the Eastern Slavs.

In August, he joined Msgr. Strossmayer in the Styrian Alps, and spent ten marvellous days with him. These two minds were truly made to get along. The mutual admiration they felt for one another reinforced their spiritual friendship. But Soloviev continued to receive Holy Communion at the hands of the Orthodox priest of the Serb parish of Zagreb... Rising above the inevitable criticisms, he then wrote a letter to Msgr. Strossmayer, summarising their initial conversations:

«  The reunion of the Churches would be advantageous to both sides . Rome would gain a devout people enthusiastic for the religious idea, she would gain a faithful and powerful defender. Russia for her part, she who through the will of God holds in her hands the destinies of the East, would not only rid herself of the involuntary sin of schism but, what is more, she would thereby become free to fulfil her great universal mission of uniting around herself all the Slav nations and of founding a new and truly Christian civilisation, a civilisation uniting the characteristics of the one truth and of religious liberty in the supreme principle of charity, encompassing everything in its unity and distributing to everyone the plenitude of the one unique good. »

Such was his transcription of the well known Catholic principle: «  In necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas : unity in essentials, liberty in matters of doubt, and in all things charity . Such must be the Charter of Catholic ecumenism under the crook of the one Shepherd. From the start of this crisis, such has been the invitation we have made to our bishops and to our brothers. Today, it is also the will of the Holy Father », wrote our Father in his editorial for September 1978, dedicated to John Paul I, another Saint Pius X without knowing it (English CRC no. 102, p. 6).

When he informed his friends of Soloviev’s letter, Msgr. Strossmayer presented its author as « a candid and truly holy soul ».

Msgr. Strossmayer and Soloviev had agreed to meet again in Rome for the jubilee pilgrimage of 1888. The Croatian bishop decided to pave the way in Rome by writing to Leo XIII’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Rampolla. He presented his Russian friend as «  toto corde et animo catholicus  ». The Pope at first took a personal interest in the affair: « Here is a sheep », he said, « who will soon be clearing the gate of the sheepfold. » But curiously, there was to be no follow-up. It seems that Leo XIII failed to appreciate Soloviev’s genius... However, things were different in France, where an unassuming and ardent rural parish priest latched on to everything that his apostolic zeal could extract from the lightning advances made by the Russian thinker ( see inset , p. 19).

Soloviev returned to Russia at the beginning of October 1886, rather discouraged by the criticisms directed against him on all sides: there were the Orthodox, some of whom had accused him of bringing Orthodoxy into disrepute abroad... and certain Catholics, like Fr. Guettée in France, a modernist priest with little to commend him, whom he had met in Paris in 1876 and who had recently published an article of rare violence against him !

THE “ RETURN OF THE DISSIDENTS ”

June 18, 1887: a young Capuchin, Leopold Mandic, from Herzeg Novi in Bosnia, under the jurisdiction of Msgr. Strossmayer, and studying at the friary in Padua, heard the voice of God inviting him to pray for and promote the return of the Orthodox to the bosom of the one Church of Christ. «  The goal of my life , he would later say, must be the return of the Eastern dissidents to Catholic unity; I must therefore employ all my energies, as far as my littleness allows, to co-operate in such a task through the sacrifice of my life . » Fifty years later, he would still remember this grace: «  June 18, for the record: 1887-1937. Today, I offered the Holy Sacrifice for the Eastern dissidents, for their return to Catholic unity . » Thus the Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate united, in this one same “ ecumenical ” work, the ardent heart of a young Capuchin destined for the altars, the apostolic wisdom of a bishop and the brilliant intuitions of a great thinker.

In January 1887, from the Monastery of Saint Sergius where he had celebrated Christmas, Soloviev wrote an article in which he provided philosophic justification for the three Catholic dogmas which the Orthodox reject, namely the Filioque, the Immaculate Conception and papal infallibility . Here is a « basis for working towards the reunion of the Churches », he explained. A few months later, he published in Zagreb (on account of the censure directed against him in Russia) his book The History and Future of Theocracy .

There he retraced the vast movement of history towards the establishment of the Kingdom of God. Universal Theocracy, the successor of Jewish Theocracy, cannot be conceived, he explained, without an integrally Christian politics, and he concluded with a splendid anthem to Christ Pantocrator receiving from His Father all power on earth and in Heaven and acting through His emissaries, the Apostles and their successors. Soloviev always believed in the privileged vocation of Russia within the Catholic community of Christian nations, even if he stigmatized what he called “ the sin of Russia ”, which was to oppress and hate all those it dominated, in particular Polish Catholics, Greek Uniates, Ruthenians and Jews !

Like a true prophet, he was vigorous in preaching repentance to his people . In order that they might be faithful to their vocation within the great Slav family, Soloviev asked them to give up their inordinate ambitions, to return to a truer and more Christian conception of their destiny, and to accomplish this within the only international organization which could direct its course, Catholicism, that is to say Roman universalism.

«  One of my theses is that the cause of the Reunion of the Churches in Russia demands a podwig (sacrifice) even heavier to bear than that which, already demanding great self-denial, was needed to ensure Russia’s receptivity to Western culture, an event truly disagreeable to the national sentiment of our ancestors .

«  Well ! this sacrifice consists in drawing closer to Rome and it must be attained at all costs. In this lies the remedy for the Russian sin . »

It goes without saying that Soloviev earned himself new enemies with his book. It cost him great personal suffering, but he could not fail the Truth, which he contemplated with ever greater clarity... What greatness of soul this universal genius possessed !

SAINT VLADIMIR AND THE CHRISTIAN STATE

1888 marked the ninth centenary of the baptism of Saint Vladimir, the first prince of Kiev, whose kingdom after his conversion became « the model of Christian States, with evangelical morals », writes our Father (English CRC, December 1982, p. 23). Soloviev used the occasion to give a conference in Moscow, where he reaffirmed that Russia’s destiny was to turn towards Rome, as King Vladimir had ! However, having hardened itself in its schism, the Muscovite hierarchy was no longer animated by the spirit of St. Vladimir. Hence the fury of the Orthodox hierarchs !

At the same time, Msgr. Strossmayer had gone to Rome for the Jubilee. In vain did he wait for Soloviev there. The latter, fearing perhaps that he had made a definitive break with the Orthodox world which he dreamed on the contrary of winning for the Union, had given up the idea of making this journey. It must also be said that Vatican diplomacy hardly inspired more confidence in him. Leo XIII was revealing himself less and less slavophile, reserving his favours for the Germany of old Bismarck and the young William II ! Msgr. Strossmayer lamented this in a letter to Fr. Martynov: «  The Pope is acting against the Slavs. The Roman prelates are like people insane and think only of temporal power !  »

What a difference between Leo XIII and his successor, St. Pius X, who was, in the words of Msgr. Rupp and our Father, the greatest slavophile pope of our times !

Early in May 1888, Soloviev was on a visit to Paris. To explain his thinking to the French public, he gave a conference on the Russian Idea , « the true national idea eternally fixed in the design of God », who longs to spread His light over the whole world. However, Soloviev remained lucid about his own Church: « If the unity of the universal Church founded by Christ only exists among us in a latent state, it is because the official institution represented by our ecclesiastical government and our theological school is not a living part of the universal Church. »

In passing, he described the destruction of the Greek-Uniate Church by the Orthodox as a «  veritable national sin weighing on Russia and paralysing her moral strength  ». That is still the case today...

In July, Kiev celebrated the feast of the baptism of St. Vladimir. From Zagreb Msgr. Strossmayer sent a telegram in which he exalted Russia’s future role in the manner of his friend Soloviev. Scandal ! His remarks were universally reported by the press. Cardinal Rampolla informed the Croatian bishop that Leo XIII was seriously displeased ! The bishop of Djakovo also earned himself the bitter reproaches of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria, which is more understandable given the rivalry existing between the two Empires.

In the summer of 1887, Soloviev published in the Universe , the newspaper of Louis Veuillot, three articles on St. Vladimir and the Christian State which caused a great stir. Then he journeyed to Croatia where he remained for one whole month with Msgr. Strossmayer. This meeting was rather sad, for the two friends were increasingly aware that their attempt to reunite the Churches would not succeed, at least in their lifetime.

It was in Djakovo that Soloviev finished the immense prologue to his magisterial book, Russia and the Church Universal , in which one can already glimpse signs of the discouragement that would overwhelm the thinker in the latter part of his life. We know from Fatima that the work of the conversion of Russia, something humanly impossible, has been entrusted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary who has a particular love for this Nation such as to inspire jealousy in others. But this only makes it all the more extraordinary that our prophet should have traced out the course of this conversion, like a true Precursor !

« RUSSIA AND THE CHURCH UNIVERSAL »

Soloviev does not hesitate to delve deep, extremely deep, into the past. To realise its designs in the world, divine Wisdom wished to become incarnate, and the Verb to take flesh like our own. As that was not enough, He also wished to unite to Himself a social and historical body, one that could reach the universality of mankind and communicate to all men His own divine Life. In this magnificent perspective, Soloviev compares the formation of that Body through which God wishes to be united with humanity to that effected in the womb of the Virgin Mary at the time of the Incarnation, and to that which operates every day in the Eucharistic mystery... What was needed for this work was a solid foundation, a Rock:

« This bedrock has been found », he writes, « it is Rome. It is only on the Rock [of Peter and his successors] that the Church is founded. This is not an opinion, it is an imposing historical reality . »

It is also an evangelical truth: «  You are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my Church . » Here Soloviev addresses the Protestants who seek to outbid each other in their attacks against the Primacy of Peter by quoting Jesus’ own words to His Apostle when he was obstructing the Master’s path: «  Get behind me, Satan !  » Soloviev’s response once again shows the clarity of his intelligence and his perfect knowledge of Catholic dogma:

«  There is only one way of harmonising these texts which the inspired Evangelist did not juxtapose without reason. Simon Peter, as supreme pastor and doctor of the universal Church , assisted by God and speaking for all, is, in this capacity, the unshakeable foundation of the House of God and the holder of the keys of the heavenly Kingdom. The same Simon Peter, as a private person, speaking and acting through his own natural forces and an understanding that is purely human , can say and do things that are unworthy, scandalous and even satanic. But personal defects and sins are passing, whereas the social function of the ecclesiastical monarch is permanent. “ Satan ” and the scandal have disappeared, but Peter has remained.  »

Soloviev’s doctrine agrees with that of Vatican Council I and with that of our Father who, at the same time as he makes us venerate Peter’s magisterium, magnificently illustrated by Blessed Pius IX, St. Pius X and John Paul I, accuses John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II of being instruments of “ Satan ” for the ruin of the Church.

However, Christ wished that it should be around Peter that the unity of faith and charity should be formed: «  Since the unity of the faith does not presently exist in the totality of believers, seeing that not all of them are unanimous in matters of religion, it must lie in the legal authority of a single head, an authority assured by divine assistance and the trust of all the faithful . This is the ROCK on which Christ founded His Church and against which the gates of hell will never prevail.  »

Why did this ROCK settle in Rome, and not in Jerusalem, Constantinople or Moscow ? Here we have a further brilliant response from Soloviev: historically Rome represented the order, civilization and terrestrial Empire that would best allow the Church to become the universal spiritual Empire desired by Christ. In a mystical view of the history of Salvation – we would say divine “ orthodromy ” – Soloviev shows how God, wishing to extend salvation to the whole world,  decided one day that His Kingdom should leave Israel for Rome, so that the capital of the pagan Empire should become “ the conjoint instrument ” of His designs:

« The universal monarchy was to stay put; the centre of unity was not to move. But central power itself, its character, its source and its sanction were to be renewed... Instead of an Empire of Might, there was to be a Church of Love. » One thinks of Constantine’s conversion and his imposition throughout the Roman Empire of laws favouring Christianity, and of Theodosius declaring the Christian religion the religion of State. What decisive support for the Gospel ! The remarkable Roman civilization, already the heir of Greece, was put at the service of the Cross of Christ !

Soloviev had some wonderful expressions to describe this, as for example the following: «  Jesus unthroned Caesar... By unthroning the false and impious absolutism of the pagan Caesars, Jesus confirmed and immortalised the universal monarchy of Rome and gave it its true theocratic foundation . »

« Let us not think », comments our Father, « that our theosophist loses his way in a contemplation of evangelical love and freedom. Fully aware of the frailty and shortcomings of humanity, he declares that it is essential, for its effective salvation, that supreme divine power be joined to the firmest social structure, to the virile principle , and not as formerly to the female principle of a virginal flesh for the Incarnation. This firm principle is the imperial monarchical institution which is Rome and Caesar. Converted, elevated and unabolished, the Power of Rome continues in the Pope for the service of the universal community.

« It is only this divino-human pontifical paternity that is capable of forming the basis of the universal fraternity of the peoples, not only through its spiritual influence but also through its authority and its supranational organization. In this monarchy, sacred but popular, the Pope, the Universal Emperor, clearly remains the servant of the servants of God and is, for that very reason, the sovereign Head of the Nations. Opposed to any kind of papolatry, antagonistic to all the encroachments of papism, and quite capable of denouncing such a Pope as Satan, Soloviev raised an imperishable monument to the glory of Rome and pointed out – him, a member of the Orthodox Church – the path of the world’s salvation, which lay in one place only, in the universal Christian order of a restored Roman Catholic Church ... » (French CRC no. 131, July 1978, p. 6)

In his lifetime, Soloviev ran up against a wall of hostility and incomprehension: « I am not so naive », he said, « to seek to convince minds whose private interests are greater than their desire for religious truth. In presenting the general evidence for the permanent primacy of Peter as the basis of the universal Church, I have simply wanted to assist those who are opposed to this truth, not because of their interests and passions, but merely because of their unwitting errors and hereditary prejudices. »

The final period of his life might seem to some like a decline and a renunciation of his prophetic insights, but our Father writes: « Soloviev was too great a mind to be discouraged or to modify his ideas in accordance with the fluctuations of his worldly success. What is certainly true is that his bitter experiences gave him a better knowledge of the Evil that was at work in the world, throwing up formidable obstacles to God’s designs and going so far as to erect a kind of caricature of them. This he denounced as the power of the Antichrist, the Prince of this world, announced in the Scriptures. » (French CRC no. 132, August 1978, p. 12)

At the beginning of the 1890’s, relations between Soloviev and the Orthodox Church deteriorated. «  Given the papaphobia reigning among us , he wrote to a friend, sometimes revealing its underhand character and at other times its stupidity, and always in any event unchristian, I considered and I continue to consider that it is necessary to draw people’s attention to the Rock of the Church laid by Christ Himself and to its positive significance . »

As he persisted in his criticisms, even going so far as to compare the Greco-Russian Church with « the Synagogue », the Orthodox hierarchy, in the person of Pobiedonostev, the Holy Synod’s prosecutor, employed the ultimate weapon at its disposal: it deprived him of the sacraments. One day in 1894, being seriously ill, Soloviev asked to receive the sacraments. His Orthodox confessor refused to give him absolution unless he renounced his Catholic views. Soloviev refused to yield, preferring to forego confession and Holy Communion.

AN AUTHENTIC CONVERSION

The moment had come. On February 18, 1896, he went to see Fr. Nicholas Alexeyevich Tolstoy, a Catholic priest of the Eastern rite exercising his ministry in Moscow. This priest, a former officer, owed him his vocation, his formation (Soloviev having been his teacher) and his conversion to Catholicism. That February 18 was the feast day of Pope St. Leo so dear to Soloviev. Before Mass, he read on his knees the Tridentine symbol of the faith containing the Filioque and a formula declaring that the Church of Rome must be regarded as the head of all the particular Churches. Then he received the Body of Christ at the hands of the Catholic priest.

On the following day, Fr. Tolstoy was denounced and arrested. He managed to escape and to reach Rome first, then France. It was only in 1910 that he would give an account in the Universe of the authentic conversion of Soloviev, and in 1917 that the two witnesses present at the scene would confirm the celebrated Russian’s profession of the Catholic faith. Nevertheless, this conversion was disputed not only by the Orthodox but also by Catholics imbued with a false ecumenism like Msgr. d’Herbigny of sinister memory. But in this matter the facts are indubitable. His entry into the Catholic Church did not, however, in Soloviev’s mind, exclude him from what he called « the true and authentic Eastern or Greco-Russian Church ». Never did he embrace the Latin rite. After the exile of Fr. Tolstoy, as there were no longer any Catholic priests in Moscow apart from those belonging to the Latin rite, Soloviev decided to refrain from receiving the sacraments...

In 1897, a census of the whole of Russia was carried out in which a question was asked about religion. «  I am both Catholic and Orthodox; let the police work that out !  » Soloviev answered.

« Self-important people from Rome and Moscow declared themselves scandalized », writes our Father. « The hour had not yet come for the podwig , for self-renunciation and reconciliation in truth and justice ( pravda ), and for the restoration of the wholly divine unity of communion in love ( sobornost ). Msgr. Rupp thinks that we achieved it with Vatican II. Alas, no ! I hope for and expect it to come with Vatican III... but only after the trial, after conversion and expiation... and after Our Lady’s humble requests have been met. » (English CRC, December 1982, p. 36)

UNDER THE SIGN OF MARY

«  This glow from Heaven emanates from Mary, And vain remains the attraction of the serpent’s venom.  »

On July 17, 1900, sensing death approaching, Soloviev sent for a priest. He was most insistent about this: « Will it be morning soon ? When will the priest come ? » The next day, he made his confession and received Holy Communion at the hands of an Orthodox priest. He died peacefully a few days later, on July 31, «  in the communion of Russian Orthodoxy to which he had ever been faithful, without however disowning the Catholicism of his heart, assured by the example of the Fathers of Russian Christianity, Saints Cyril and Methodius, Saint Vladimir, and so many strastoterptsi , innocents who had suffered the passion , and startsi , slavophiles and romanophiles at the same time, without schism or constraint, in the love of Holy Church and Holy Russia, the Kingdom of God to come !  »

But all this is too beautiful for us not to revisit it, so our Father has decided that we will study in more depth the work of this great Russian thinker, in three parts to appear in subsequent editions of Resurrection , Deo volente:

The vocation of Russia in the designs of God and the concert of the Christian nations: up to and including Putin ?

The Immaculate Virgin Mary , throne of Wisdom, essential beauty of the created world, our ultimate recourse !

The Antichrist unmasked by Soloviev . This was the last service the “ inspired prophet ” rendered to his beloved Russia: that of putting her on her guard against the seductions of the Antichrist. In Rome, at the same time, St. Pius X was also announcing his advent in his encyclical E supremi Apostolatus of October 4, 1903: « The Antichrist is present among us. The Evil shaking the world should not affright us, it will only last a short while. What must fall will fall, and the Church will be reborn from the trial, assisted by her Saviour and ready for extraordinary developments. »

What the data says about abortion in the U.S.

Pew Research Center has conducted many surveys about abortion over the years, providing a lens into Americans’ views on whether the procedure should be legal, among a host of other questions.

In a  Center survey  conducted nearly a year after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that  ended the constitutional right to abortion , 62% of U.S. adults said the practice should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. Another survey conducted a few months before the decision showed that relatively few Americans take an absolutist view on the issue .

Find answers to common questions about abortion in America, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, which have tracked these patterns for several decades:

How many abortions are there in the U.S. each year?

How has the number of abortions in the u.s. changed over time, what is the abortion rate among women in the u.s. how has it changed over time, what are the most common types of abortion, how many abortion providers are there in the u.s., and how has that number changed, what percentage of abortions are for women who live in a different state from the abortion provider, what are the demographics of women who have had abortions, when during pregnancy do most abortions occur, how often are there medical complications from abortion.

This compilation of data on abortion in the United States draws mainly from two sources: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, both of which have regularly compiled national abortion data for approximately half a century, and which collect their data in different ways.

The CDC data that is highlighted in this post comes from the agency’s “abortion surveillance” reports, which have been published annually since 1974 (and which have included data from 1969). Its figures from 1973 through 1996 include data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and New York City – 52 “reporting areas” in all. Since 1997, the CDC’s totals have lacked data from some states (most notably California) for the years that those states did not report data to the agency. The four reporting areas that did not submit data to the CDC in 2021 – California, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey – accounted for approximately 25% of all legal induced abortions in the U.S. in 2020, according to Guttmacher’s data. Most states, though,  do  have data in the reports, and the figures for the vast majority of them came from each state’s central health agency, while for some states, the figures came from hospitals and other medical facilities.

Discussion of CDC abortion data involving women’s state of residence, marital status, race, ethnicity, age, abortion history and the number of previous live births excludes the low share of abortions where that information was not supplied. For the numbers of deaths caused by induced abortions in 1963 and 1965, this analysis looks at reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. In computing those figures, we excluded abortions listed in the report under the categories “spontaneous or unspecified” or as “other.” (“Spontaneous abortion” is another way of referring to miscarriages.)

Guttmacher data in this post comes from national surveys of abortion providers that Guttmacher has conducted 19 times since 1973. Guttmacher compiles its figures after contacting every known provider of abortions – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, and it provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond to its inquiries. (In 2020, the last year for which it has released data on the number of abortions in the U.S., it used estimates for 12% of abortions.) For most of the 2000s, Guttmacher has conducted these national surveys every three years, each time getting abortion data for the prior two years. For each interim year, Guttmacher has calculated estimates based on trends from its own figures and from other data.

The latest full summary of Guttmacher data came in the institute’s report titled “Abortion Incidence and Service Availability in the United States, 2020.” It includes figures for 2020 and 2019 and estimates for 2018. The report includes a methods section.

In addition, this post uses data from StatPearls, an online health care resource, on complications from abortion.

An exact answer is hard to come by. The CDC and the Guttmacher Institute have each tried to measure this for around half a century, but they use different methods and publish different figures.

The last year for which the CDC reported a yearly national total for abortions is 2021. It found there were 625,978 abortions in the District of Columbia and the 46 states with available data that year, up from 597,355 in those states and D.C. in 2020. The corresponding figure for 2019 was 607,720.

The last year for which Guttmacher reported a yearly national total was 2020. It said there were 930,160 abortions that year in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, compared with 916,460 in 2019.

  • How the CDC gets its data: It compiles figures that are voluntarily reported by states’ central health agencies, including separate figures for New York City and the District of Columbia. Its latest totals do not include figures from California, Maryland, New Hampshire or New Jersey, which did not report data to the CDC. ( Read the methodology from the latest CDC report .)
  • How Guttmacher gets its data: It compiles its figures after contacting every known abortion provider – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, then provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond. Guttmacher’s figures are higher than the CDC’s in part because they include data (and in some instances, estimates) from all 50 states. ( Read the institute’s latest full report and methodology .)

While the Guttmacher Institute supports abortion rights, its empirical data on abortions in the U.S. has been widely cited by  groups  and  publications  across the political spectrum, including by a  number of those  that  disagree with its positions .

These estimates from Guttmacher and the CDC are results of multiyear efforts to collect data on abortion across the U.S. Last year, Guttmacher also began publishing less precise estimates every few months , based on a much smaller sample of providers.

The figures reported by these organizations include only legal induced abortions conducted by clinics, hospitals or physicians’ offices, or those that make use of abortion pills dispensed from certified facilities such as clinics or physicians’ offices. They do not account for the use of abortion pills that were obtained  outside of clinical settings .

The annual number of U.S. abortions rose for years after Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in 1973, reaching its highest levels around the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. Since then, abortions have generally decreased at what a CDC analysis called  “a slow yet steady pace.”

Guttmacher says the number of abortions occurring in the U.S. in 2020 was 40% lower than it was in 1991. According to the CDC, the number was 36% lower in 2021 than in 1991, looking just at the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported both of those years.

(The corresponding line graph shows the long-term trend in the number of legal abortions reported by both organizations. To allow for consistent comparisons over time, the CDC figures in the chart have been adjusted to ensure that the same states are counted from one year to the next. Using that approach, the CDC figure for 2021 is 622,108 legal abortions.)

There have been occasional breaks in this long-term pattern of decline – during the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, and then again in the late 2010s. The CDC reported modest 1% and 2% increases in abortions in 2018 and 2019, and then, after a 2% decrease in 2020, a 5% increase in 2021. Guttmacher reported an 8% increase over the three-year period from 2017 to 2020.

As noted above, these figures do not include abortions that use pills obtained outside of clinical settings.

Guttmacher says that in 2020 there were 14.4 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. Its data shows that the rate of abortions among women has generally been declining in the U.S. since 1981, when it reported there were 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age range.

The CDC says that in 2021, there were 11.6 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. (That figure excludes data from California, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.) Like Guttmacher’s data, the CDC’s figures also suggest a general decline in the abortion rate over time. In 1980, when the CDC reported on all 50 states and D.C., it said there were 25 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44.

That said, both Guttmacher and the CDC say there were slight increases in the rate of abortions during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Guttmacher says the abortion rate per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 rose from 13.5 in 2017 to 14.4 in 2020. The CDC says it rose from 11.2 per 1,000 in 2017 to 11.4 in 2019, before falling back to 11.1 in 2020 and then rising again to 11.6 in 2021. (The CDC’s figures for those years exclude data from California, D.C., Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.)

The CDC broadly divides abortions into two categories: surgical abortions and medication abortions, which involve pills. Since the Food and Drug Administration first approved abortion pills in 2000, their use has increased over time as a share of abortions nationally, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher.

The majority of abortions in the U.S. now involve pills, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. The CDC says 56% of U.S. abortions in 2021 involved pills, up from 53% in 2020 and 44% in 2019. Its figures for 2021 include the District of Columbia and 44 states that provided this data; its figures for 2020 include D.C. and 44 states (though not all of the same states as in 2021), and its figures for 2019 include D.C. and 45 states.

Guttmacher, which measures this every three years, says 53% of U.S. abortions involved pills in 2020, up from 39% in 2017.

Two pills commonly used together for medication abortions are mifepristone, which, taken first, blocks hormones that support a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which then causes the uterus to empty. According to the FDA, medication abortions are safe  until 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Surgical abortions conducted  during the first trimester  of pregnancy typically use a suction process, while the relatively few surgical abortions that occur  during the second trimester  of a pregnancy typically use a process called dilation and evacuation, according to the UCLA School of Medicine.

In 2020, there were 1,603 facilities in the U.S. that provided abortions,  according to Guttmacher . This included 807 clinics, 530 hospitals and 266 physicians’ offices.

While clinics make up half of the facilities that provide abortions, they are the sites where the vast majority (96%) of abortions are administered, either through procedures or the distribution of pills, according to Guttmacher’s 2020 data. (This includes 54% of abortions that are administered at specialized abortion clinics and 43% at nonspecialized clinics.) Hospitals made up 33% of the facilities that provided abortions in 2020 but accounted for only 3% of abortions that year, while just 1% of abortions were conducted by physicians’ offices.

Looking just at clinics – that is, the total number of specialized abortion clinics and nonspecialized clinics in the U.S. – Guttmacher found the total virtually unchanged between 2017 (808 clinics) and 2020 (807 clinics). However, there were regional differences. In the Midwest, the number of clinics that provide abortions increased by 11% during those years, and in the West by 6%. The number of clinics  decreased  during those years by 9% in the Northeast and 3% in the South.

The total number of abortion providers has declined dramatically since the 1980s. In 1982, according to Guttmacher, there were 2,908 facilities providing abortions in the U.S., including 789 clinics, 1,405 hospitals and 714 physicians’ offices.

The CDC does not track the number of abortion providers.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that provided abortion and residency information to the CDC in 2021, 10.9% of all abortions were performed on women known to live outside the state where the abortion occurred – slightly higher than the percentage in 2020 (9.7%). That year, D.C. and 46 states (though not the same ones as in 2021) reported abortion and residency data. (The total number of abortions used in these calculations included figures for women with both known and unknown residential status.)

The share of reported abortions performed on women outside their state of residence was much higher before the 1973 Roe decision that stopped states from banning abortion. In 1972, 41% of all abortions in D.C. and the 20 states that provided this information to the CDC that year were performed on women outside their state of residence. In 1973, the corresponding figure was 21% in the District of Columbia and the 41 states that provided this information, and in 1974 it was 11% in D.C. and the 43 states that provided data.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported age data to  the CDC in 2021, the majority of women who had abortions (57%) were in their 20s, while about three-in-ten (31%) were in their 30s. Teens ages 13 to 19 accounted for 8% of those who had abortions, while women ages 40 to 44 accounted for about 4%.

The vast majority of women who had abortions in 2021 were unmarried (87%), while married women accounted for 13%, according to  the CDC , which had data on this from 37 states.

In the District of Columbia, New York City (but not the rest of New York) and the 31 states that reported racial and ethnic data on abortion to  the CDC , 42% of all women who had abortions in 2021 were non-Hispanic Black, while 30% were non-Hispanic White, 22% were Hispanic and 6% were of other races.

Looking at abortion rates among those ages 15 to 44, there were 28.6 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic Black women in 2021; 12.3 abortions per 1,000 Hispanic women; 6.4 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic White women; and 9.2 abortions per 1,000 women of other races, the  CDC reported  from those same 31 states, D.C. and New York City.

For 57% of U.S. women who had induced abortions in 2021, it was the first time they had ever had one,  according to the CDC.  For nearly a quarter (24%), it was their second abortion. For 11% of women who had an abortion that year, it was their third, and for 8% it was their fourth or more. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

Nearly four-in-ten women who had abortions in 2021 (39%) had no previous live births at the time they had an abortion,  according to the CDC . Almost a quarter (24%) of women who had abortions in 2021 had one previous live birth, 20% had two previous live births, 10% had three, and 7% had four or more previous live births. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

The vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. In 2021, 93% of abortions occurred during the first trimester – that is, at or before 13 weeks of gestation,  according to the CDC . An additional 6% occurred between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1% were performed at 21 weeks or more of gestation. These CDC figures include data from 40 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

About 2% of all abortions in the U.S. involve some type of complication for the woman , according to an article in StatPearls, an online health care resource. “Most complications are considered minor such as pain, bleeding, infection and post-anesthesia complications,” according to the article.

The CDC calculates  case-fatality rates for women from induced abortions – that is, how many women die from abortion-related complications, for every 100,000 legal abortions that occur in the U.S .  The rate was lowest during the most recent period examined by the agency (2013 to 2020), when there were 0.45 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. The case-fatality rate reported by the CDC was highest during the first period examined by the agency (1973 to 1977), when it was 2.09 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. During the five-year periods in between, the figure ranged from 0.52 (from 1993 to 1997) to 0.78 (from 1978 to 1982).

The CDC calculates death rates by five-year and seven-year periods because of year-to-year fluctuation in the numbers and due to the relatively low number of women who die from legal induced abortions.

In 2020, the last year for which the CDC has information , six women in the U.S. died due to complications from induced abortions. Four women died in this way in 2019, two in 2018, and three in 2017. (These deaths all followed legal abortions.) Since 1990, the annual number of deaths among women due to legal induced abortion has ranged from two to 12.

The annual number of reported deaths from induced abortions (legal and illegal) tended to be higher in the 1980s, when it ranged from nine to 16, and from 1972 to 1979, when it ranged from 13 to 63. One driver of the decline was the drop in deaths from illegal abortions. There were 39 deaths from illegal abortions in 1972, the last full year before Roe v. Wade. The total fell to 19 in 1973 and to single digits or zero every year after that. (The number of deaths from legal abortions has also declined since then, though with some slight variation over time.)

The number of deaths from induced abortions was considerably higher in the 1960s than afterward. For instance, there were 119 deaths from induced abortions in  1963  and 99 in  1965 , according to reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC is a division of Health and Human Services.

LOS ANGELES – The Mets will be without their starting catcher for a stretch after Francisco Alvarez was placed on the injured list Saturday with what the team called a left thumb sprain.

Alvarez left F riday night’s 9-4 victory over the Dodgers in the second inning in visible discomfort after stumbling as he rounded first base.

Alvarez used his hand, with weight on his thumb, to brace himself and kept running to second.

Francisco Alvarez was placed on the injured list with a sprained left thumb.

He was scheduled to receive an MRI exam after the game.

The Mets selected Tomas Nido from Triple-A Syracuse to provide them with catching depth behind Omar Narvaez.

Alvarez in 16 games this season has a .236/.288/.364 slash line with one homer and eight RBIs.

Record floods hit Dubai after up to 10 inches of rain; 18 dead in Oman

The Arabian peninsula was hit by unprecedented rainfall and floods, shutting schools and grounding flights on Wednesday, with parts of the desert nation United Arab Emirates receiving 10 inches of rain in 24 hours.

In Oman, at least 18 people have died in recent days because of the severe weather, the country's National Committee for Emergency Management said.

The storms swamped roadways and created dangerous conditions across the region, a normally arid part of the world that is unaccustomed to intense rain and flash flooding.

Dubai's airport advised passengers early Wednesday not to travel to the airport unless "absolutely necessary." Major airline Emirates said in a post on X it was suspending check-in for all passengers at Dubai until midnight Wednesday (3 p.m. ET).

The National Center of Meteorology in Abu Dhabi said the rain in the UAE surpassed anything since records began in 1949, when the area was still a British protectorate and before the discovery of oil.

The Khatm Al Shakla area outside the city of Al Ain, near the border with Oman, received 10 inches of rain in less than 24 hours.

The meteorology center called it "an exceptional event in the UAE’s climate history since the start of recording climate data, and it is expected that the coming hours will witness the recording of larger amounts of rainfall."

Dubai's major international airport diverted scores of incoming flights on April 16 as heavy rains lashed the United Arab Emirates, causing widespread flooding around the desert country.

Video obtained by Saudi Arabia’s state-owned news outlet Al Arabiya showed the tarmac in Dubai inundated, with airplanes skimming through floodwaters and support vehicles nearly submerged.

By midnight Tuesday, 5.59 inches of rain had fallen on Dubai over 24 hours — on average, 3.73 inches falls every year on Dubai Airport, a major hub for travel in the Middle East and beyond.

The UAE’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority urged people to stay home, saying on X that cars should be parked in “safe and elevated locations,” away from flood-prone areas and places where water can accumulate.

Private schools across the UAE were closed ahead of the storm , and government employees were instructed to work remotely.

The UAE is known for its dry conditions and arid climate, but it can get occasional precipitation in the winter.

In neighboring Oman, storms and heavy rain in recent days killed 10 schoolchildren and an adult driver in a vehicle that was overtaken by floodwaters, according to the AP.

Other parts of the Middle East, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, were also hit by unusually wet conditions this week.

It’s too soon to know whether global warming played a role in the recent storms, but studies have shown that a warmer atmosphere due to climate change can hold more moisture , which in turn can fuel more severe storms and intense rain.
