Slope-Intercept Form: Quick Review
In algebra, the slope-intercept form of a linear equation is expressed in the form y=mx+b where m represents the slope of the line and b represents the line’s y-intercept. Note that m and b are both placeholders for numbers (integers or fractions).
While slope-intercept form is not the only way to express a linear equation, is it widely considered to be the most useful. If you know the slope-intercept form equation of a line, you can easily determine its slope and y-intercept. And, when you know the equation of a line in slope-intercept form, you can easily graph that line on the coordinate plane.
Slope-Intercept Form: y=mx+b
Students can easily grasp and apply slope-intercept form provided that they have a firm understanding of both slope and y-intercept.
Slope refers to the steepness of a line and there are four types of slope:
Positive Slope ↗️
Negative Slope ↘️
Zero Slope ↔️
Undefined Slope ↕️
We often refer to slope in terms or “rise over run” where slope is represented as a fraction where the numerator represents the rise(change in y) and the denominator represents the run (change in x).
If you need more help with understanding how to find the slope of a graphed line, click here to access our free step-by-step guide .
Slope-Intercept Form: We can describe slope in terms of “rise over run” or change in y over change in x.
The y-intercept refers to where the line crosses the y-axis.
In the case of a linear function with equation y=mx+b, b represents the y-intercept and will have coordinate points at (0,b).
For example, the linear equation y=3x-2 has a slope of 3 and a y-intercept of -2. This means that the graph will intersect the y-axis at the point (0,-2) as shown in the diagram below.
The line represented by the equation y=3x-2 has a y-intercept at -2.
As long as you know how to determine the slope and y-intercept of a linear equation or from a given graph, you will be able to understand slope-intercept form and solve problems involving slope-intercept form.
If you need more practice with slope-intercept form, we highly recommend that you download and work through a few of the free slope intercept form worksheets above . Each worksheet includes a complete answer key so you can check your work and make sure that you have a strong understanding of this important algebra topic before moving forward.

It's quite easy. Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b. The "m" is the slope. The "b" is the y-intercept. So, if the problem tells you the slope = 3/4 and the y-intercept is -5, then you can create the equation by: -- swap out "m" and put in 3/4. -- swap out "b" and put in -5. You get the equation: y = 3/4 (x) - 5.
