PhD, Postdoc, and Professor Salaries in the Netherlands

Salaries at Dutch universities are set at the national level and listed in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). An academic’s place on the salary scale   is determined by their position, qualifications, and experience. The salaries listed in this article are pre-tax. Dutch salaries are supplemented by an 8% holiday allowance (paid in May or June) and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance (paid in December). Income tax is high—either 36.5% or 52%—however foreign academics are often eligible for the 30% scheme which allows them to receive the first 30% of their salary tax-free.

Promovendus

A PhD student in the Netherlands is called a promovendus . A Dutch PhD usually takes four years to complete. As PhD candidates are seen as employees rather than students and usually hold the position of Assistant-in-Opleiding (AiO) or Onderzoeker-in-Opleiding (OiO).

A PhD student earns €2,448 to €3,128 per month.

After earning their PhD, many researchers go on to a postdoc often at another university or in another country. A postdoc is a continuation of the researcher’s training that allows them to further specialize in a particular field and learn new skills and techniques. A Dutch postdoc lasts two years.

The salary range for a postdoc is €3,821 to €5,230 per month ( scale 11 ).

Universitair docent

This position is equivalent to the rank of assistant professor and is the first permanent academic position. The initial contract is often for four years at which point the academic is evaluated and their position may become permanent. If the position becomes permanent, it is not uncommon to stay in this position until retirement.

Tenure-track universitair docent positions were initially introduced due to many Dutch academic jobs being temporary and job security being perceived very low. A more experienced candidate with the potential to become a universitair hoofddocent can become a tenure-track universitair docent . After four to six years their performance is evaluated and those who have published and received major grants are promoted to universitair hoofddocent .

The salary scales for a universitair docent ranges from €3,821 to €5,943 per month ( scale 11 and 12 ) depending on qualifications and experience level.

Universitair hoofddocent

A universitair hoofddocent is equivalent in rank to an associate professor. Traditionally to become a universitair hoofddocen t, a universitair docent had to apply for a vacant position. However it is now possible to be promoted to this position based on performance. This is a permanent position and it is not uncommon to remain a universitair hoofddocent until retirement.

The salary scales for a universitair hoofddocent ranges from €5,294 to €7,097 per month ( scale 13 and 14 ) depending on qualifications and experience level.

A hoogleraar is equivalent to a full professor and is at the top of the Dutch professorial hierarchy. They have substantial research accomplishments that have established them as an international or national leader in their field. The position is similar to that of a department chair in that a hoogleraar supervises all the other professors in their department or group. They are also the only ones who can supervise PhD dissertations. Unlike the American tenure system, there is no automatic promotion to hoogleraar . To become one, a universitair hoofddocent has to apply for a vacant position.

The salary scales for a hoogleraar ranges from €5,864 to €10,309 per month ( scale H2 and H1 ) depending on qualifications and experience level.

Salary scale and periodic increase

The Leiden University salaries are determined at national level and listed in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). You are assigned to a salary scale on the basis of your job profile and level. If you perform well, your salary will be increased to the next amount in the salary scale, until it reaches the salary scale maximum. Your employment contract specifies in which month the periodic increase takes place.

You may fail to receive a periodic increase if your performance is unsatisfactory ( Find it in the CAO ).

Salary scale PhD students

PhD students have their own salary scale: P. This scale consists of 4 salary grades: 0 to 3. At the start of your contract, you will be assigned to grade P0. After 12 months, you will automatically move to P1. This initial salary increase is exceptional in that it is not linked to a performance assessment. In the following years, your periodic salary increase will be based on performance. This is scale P per 01-07-2022:

Preliminary salary scales

You will be assigned to a preliminary salary scale if at the start of your new position you are not yet able to fully exercise your duties. The preliminary scale is the scale immediately below your position’s scale. Scale 10 forms an exception to this rule, as it has scale 8 as its preliminary scale. You can be assigned to a preliminary salary scale for a period of a maximum of two years. As soon as it becomes apparent from your assessment that you are able to fully exercise your position, you will be assigned to the right scale for your position. If after eighteen months you are still unable to fully exercise your position, we will invite you for an interview to discuss you career perspectives, within the University or elsewhere.

Salary scale for employees with occupational limitations

Employees with occupational limitations who are employed by the University in the context of the Participation Act ( Participatiewet ) have their own salary scale. If your labour productivity has increased substantially after one year, your salary will be increased to the next amount in the salary scale.

To turn microbial bioprocesses into viable alternatives for petrochemical based production, we must drastically improve their yields, rates and titers. This asks for revolutionary approaches! Non-canonical redox co-factors allow to approach theoretical maximum yields. To reach the theoretical yield, all electrons of the substrate should end up in the product, but electrons generally diffuse away via common redox co-factors such as NAD + . Using non-canonical redox cofactors, we want gain control over the electron flow from substate to product. To implement this approach in E. coli and yeast, we work together in a large consortium involving 7 PhD students and 2 Postdocs from different groups at Wageningen University, Free University Amsterdam and Delft University of Technology led by Prof. Ruud Weusthuis (Wageningen University). As PhD student you will be responsible for engineering strains to uncouple product formation from growth using non-canonical redox cofactors. This will be done in collaboration with other PhD students at WU and TUD in both yeast and E. coli. The major focus of the project will lie on in-depth screening and characterization of these strains in terms of for example yields and rates, but also strain stability and unexpected responses. For this you will combine advanced bioreactor cultivations, quantitative physiology and omics-analysis, to name a few. Your duties and responsibilities include:

• design and implement genetic strategies in yeast and E. coli to separately control a non-canonical redox cofactor-based product pathway and growth;
• perform bioreactor cultivations in batch, continuous and perfusion modes;
• in-depth characterization of cellular responses and energetics of engineered strains;
• improve production through bioprocess and metabolic engineering;
• data collection, analysis, reporting, and presentation of experimental data.

Your qualities

You are curious and passionate about microbial bioproduction, possess great problem-solving and analytical skills, and are highly motivated to contribute to the sustainable production of chemicals. You also possess:

• a successfully completed MSc degree in biotechnology, bioprocess engineering or another relevant field;
• significant hands-on expertise with microbial bioreactor cultivations (preferably yeast and/or bacteria);
• experience with commonly used genetic engineering tools, such as CRISPR-Cas, Golden Gate cloning, etc.;
• strong critical thinking and organizational skills;
• excellent writing and communication skills;
• ability to work independently and in a team environment;
• in-depth knowledge of the field and technology state-of-the-art;
• experience with bioprocess engineering is a plus;

International PhD Positions in Human-aligned Video-AI, Netherlands

The University of Amsterdam is pleased to announce two PhD positions focused on Human-Aligned Video-AI. These positions are part of the prestigious Human-Aligned Video AI (HAVA) Lab, a flagship interdisciplinary project that aims to explore and address fundamental questions about human alignment with video AI.

Some college graduates only need to make a $50,000 salary for a decade for their degrees to be worth it

• College degrees are under fire given the pain of student debt and political and economic troubles.
• Some public university graduates only need to earn over $50,000 for a decade to make a return.
• Graduates pay more to live in popular states but they can win due to better job markets there.

Crushing debt , political furor , and a brutal economic backdrop of historic inflation and higher borrowing costs have fueled fresh skepticism about the value of a college degree.

Yet, stumping up the cash for one may still be worth it financially if it results in significantly higher earnings. That's especially true for public universities that charge in-state tuition: their average alumnus only has to make $50,000 a year during the decade after graduation to make a positive return on their investment, The Wall Street Journal reported , citing new research from Strada Education Foundation.

Alternatively, graduates who can amass $500,000 before taxes over 10 years typically come out ahead and can repay their student loans. The finding holds for state-school graduates across sectors, The Journal said.

"As long as you're above that $50,000, even in the most expensive states, you'll still have that positive return on investment," Nichole Torpey-Saboe, Strada's vice president of research, told the newspaper.

It costs more to live in states like New York and California, but recent graduates can still outearn their peers because of the superior job markets in those states, which often provide better access to internships and entry-level roles.

Strada found that around 80% of state-school graduates in those states scored a return on their college investment, compared to 60% in West Virginia and just over 50% in Idaho, The Journal said.

The nonprofit also revealed that community college doesn't provide as big an earnings bump, and private nonprofit universities tend to be more expensive at $8,000 a year and another $11,000 for room and board.

Taking out a student loan and getting a four-year degree can be daunting for many people, as student loans can haunt borrowers for decades, and college campuses have become a hotspot for protests and political clashes. The prices of food, fuel, and housing have all soared, and monthly payments on credit cards, cars, and mortgages have jumped.

But an affordable degree that bolsters someone's earnings potential and career prospects without breaking the bank can still pay off nicely.

The Breakthrough Increases of Graduate Student Teaching Assistant and Research Salaries, and Postdoctoral Salaries, and Their Subsequent Effects

These workers last year unionized through United Auto Workers, and included those members of the University of California system of ten campuses.   They also did a six week strike in the UC system, representing 48,000 Graduate Students.   The UC campuses are often in popular coastal areas as well as in expanding business areas, partly due to their presence.   This results in rapidly increasing housing costs.   There also was a period of 9% inflation.  

Graduate students often work at 50% salary as Teaching Assistants during their first two years while they are also completing required graduate courses.   The University covers their tuition and student fees.  They then become Research Assistants if such funding is available.  The research grant covers their tuition.   Graduate students usually take five years or more to complete a Ph. D. Degree.   Postdocs may take several two year appointments before they land one of a limited number of faculty jobs.   They also want to get on with their lives.   This requires employment policies covering health care, family leaves and child care.   There are also concerns about needing to change faculty advisors or mentoring at times.   All of these require unions which are designed to handle such bargaining issues, and raises and negotiations to take such concerns into account.  

Since the UC Sytem covers the state of California with the largest population and student system, and is a transparent public university, we cover that in detail.  

From the official UC salary website:   The starting Research Associate salary for the full year is $58,233;   starting Teaching Assistant for the 9 months Academic Year is $58,250;   i f Half-time, that is $29,125; and starting Grad Student Researcher full year is $61,080.   The starting Postdoctoral Fellow full year salary is $60,000.   The starting Lecturer salary for the Academic Year is $86,247.   The UC says that the Graduate Student salary increase is immediately 7.5%, with an hourly increase for such workers of $1.50 per hour.  For comparison, the starting Assistant Professor salary which was not part of that Union is $74,600, and full Professor is $108,300.

Other sources give perhaps somewhat wilder salary statements. A salary website glassdoor.com gives the graduate student salary range at UC Irvine with a range of $30 -$47 thousand per year, with a $37 thousand median.   Another article says that t he union contract runs through May, 2025, and eventually raises the salaries for Graduate Students, Researchers and Postdocs by 45%.   Another says that Graduate student researchers got raises of 25-80%, whereas academic employees got raises of 55-80%.   Another says that t he minimum TA academic year salary was raised from $25,000 to $36,000.   Another says that if a TA goes on strike, their $750 a week is replaced by the Union allowance of $500 a week.   (I am not paid to reconcile all such statements.)

By a vote of 79%, the UAW has voted to strike over rights to protest, which the UC is contesting as illegal, and appealing to the labor board.  Strikes are occurring at UC Santa Cruz, UCLA, and UC Davis at the most crucial time of the year.

President Drake has approved, contingent on final state funding, a 4.2% salary increase for staff and academic appointees for 2024-2025.

Governor Newsom has, for 2025-26, committed to provide UC with $259 million in back payments, and $530 million in new ongoing funding.

The consequences of these increases in states with limited budgets or budget deficits, along with federal budget tightness for national research, is immediately to decrease recruitment of graduate students, and it is feared, researchers and postdoctoral fellows.   This of course will hamper US international science competitiveness, and put more pressure on recruiting foreign trained advanced degree holders for our businesses. It is feared that the fewer positions will then be more concentrated in the top universities.

California has a looming education budget deficit, and the Governor has decided to cover that in TK-12 and Community Colleges rather than in the Cal State or the UC system.   The May estimated California budget deficit for 2024-5 is $38 billion, out of a budget of $143 billion, of which 7.4% ($10 billion) goes to education.

Within the University, there will be a competition for what makeup funds there are, probably advantaging those that need to maintain outside research funding, and disadvantaging small or research unfunded areas.   There will undoubtedly be pressure for increases in tuition.  Some fear that there will also be competition between faculty and graduate student numbers and salaries.  All of this will probably soon become evident.  Stay back and stay tuned.

Kicked out in '68 for protesting at Arizona State University, 78-year-old finally graduates

Alfredo Gutierrez is one of the most influential Latino leaders in Arizona. The 78-year-old has been recognized for a lifetime in public service. He was an Army private in Vietnam then a civil rights activist and state lawmaker. In the 1970 and 80s, he served as Arizona Senate majority leader.

But one accomplishment had eluded Gutierrez all these years: a college degree.

He was kicked out of Arizona State University in 1968 for leading student protests on campus.

Gutierrez kept his lack of a degree mostly to himself over the years, even as he encouraged young people to go to college and fought to increase college pathways for disadvantaged students. Now Gutierrez can finally say he, too, is a college graduate.

He graduated with a bachelor of liberal arts last week from ASU's College of Integrative Sciences and Arts.

Why did Alfredo Gutierrez go back to finish college?

One may wonder why, nearing 80, Gutierrez decided to finish college after already having accomplished so much in his life, including receiving an honorary doctorate from the same university. He certainly didn't need the diploma for his resume or to land a job.

"There are a couple of reasons," Gutierrez told the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. Over the years, Gutierrez spent a lot of time speaking to young people, especially Latinos, about the importance of staying in school and encouraging them to go to college. But the fact that he had never graduated himself gnawed at him.

"It seemed to me at 78 somewhat hypocritical that I had done that most of my life, and I didn't have the discipline, or didn't make the time, whichever the case may be, to go back and finish myself," Gutierrez said. "I just felt I had to do it."

His voice rings with a determination forged growing up in a hardscrabble mining town where Mexican Americans struggled against discrimination and segregation.

"I should have gotten a degree, so I'm going to go do it," Gutierrez declared.

And finally, graduating also seemed like a good way of getting back at the ASU officials who kicked him out nearly six decades ago.

"I just didn't want to let (them) get away with it," he said. "They just pushed me out, so the hell with it; I was going to go back and get the degree that was denied me, in my opinion."

Why was Alfredo Gutierrez kicked out of Arizona State University?

When he came home from Vietnam, Gutierrez enrolled at ASU on the GI Bill. He was the first person in his family to attend college.

He had grown up in a working-class family in Miami, an Arizona mining town east of Phoenix, and enlisted in the military at 17. During three years in the Army infantry, including a year fighting in Vietnam as a sharpshooter, Gutierrez said he realized that the soldiers he met who had college degrees were no smarter than him.

"They had no common sense, I thought, on how to deal with the realities that are imposed upon you in the Army in the '60s," Gutierrez said. "So the idea of going to college became agreeable to me. It was no longer the impossible barrier to me."

It was a time of large student protests on college campuses. The civil rights movement, anti-Vietnam War protests and the Chicano Movement championing Mexican American identity all were taking place.

Inspired by Cesar Chavez, the farm worker advocate and civil rights leader, Gutierrez helped form the Mexican American Student Organization at ASU, which later became Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, also known as M.E.Ch.A.

One of the organization's main causes became fighting for Mexican women, many undocumented, toiling in deplorable conditions for low pay at a laundry that washed bedding for sororities and fraternities on campus under contract with the university.

Gutierrez led protests demanding ASU pressure the laundry to improve working conditions and wages. When the school refused, Gutierrez helped lead a group of students who took over the president's office for several days.

In response, state troopers surrounded the building, the Arizona Board of Regents demanded the students be expelled, and the Legislature asked the governor to call up the National Guard, Gutierrez said.

"It was kind of crazy," Gutierrez said, pointing out similarities to the recent Israel-Hamas war protests at ASU and on other campuses.

Gutierrez said the university was determined to kick him out. He said he was accused of violating a student code of conduct the university rejiggered specifically to force him out. He was given a choice, he said: be expelled with no chance of returning or leave voluntarily with the opportunity to reapply for admission in the future.

"I chose to leave so I could come back," Gutierrez said.

But Gutierrez never went back.

He got married, had a baby and needed money to support his family.

"Life happened," Gutierrez said.

Decades of public service leadership in Arizona

Gutierrez went to California to work with Cesar Chavez organizing farmworkers. He also worked for Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 presidential campaign. He was at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles the night Kennedy was shot on June 5, 1968.

After Kennedy's death, Gutierrez was among the first to receive a Kennedy Memorial Fellowship to spend 18 months training to pursue a career in politics, public service and social justice. The stipend allowed him to support his family, and the experience was life-changing. It put Gutierrez in contact with some of the day's most prominent and important social justice and civil rights leaders.

"I attended a number of seminars with some extraordinary people, went to Harvard for special programs and in D.C. met with some unbelievable folks," Gutierrez said. The people he met included U.S. Sens. Ted Kennedy and J. William Fulbright and political activist Ralph Nader.

In 1972, when Gutierrez was 27, he ran for the Arizona Senate and won. Two years later, he was selected to serve as Senate majority leader. Gutierrez spent 14 years in the Legislature, most of that time in leadership roles.

While in the Legislature, Gutierrez pushed for Arizona to finally join the Medicaid program. Since then, the Arizona system has provided health care to millions of low-income families and individuals.

After leaving office, the political consulting firm he co-founded, Jamieson and Gutierrez, helped pave the way for the construction of sports arenas in a downtrodden area of central Phoenix. Although the idea of using public money to build sports arenas was politically unpopular at the time, Gutierrez said he saw building the facilities as a way of revitalizing the city's economically depressed core.

Gutierrez also was instrumental in opening South Mountain Community College to serve students in predominantly Latino and Black neighborhoods in south Phoenix. He helped found Chicanos Por La Causa and Valle del Sol , two Latino organizations that provide social services to working-class families.

In the 2000s, Gutierrez helped lead grassroots campaigns against the 2010 immigration enforcement law known as SB 1070 and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration sweeps.

In 2014, Gutierrez was appointed to the governing board of the Maricopa Community Colleges. He stepped down as board president in 2018 after a fall caused a brain injury that temporarily affected his ability to walk and talk.

Then, in 2023, Gutierrez decided to return to ASU and complete his degree.

Being welcomed back at ASU to complete novel, degree

Vanessa Fonseca-Chavez, an associate dean of inclusion and student success, was at her office on the ASU Tempe campus last fall when an academic adviser invited her to meet a prospective student.

The man wanted to talk about finishing his degree through the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, which is designed to provide flexibility to nontraditional students returning to college at different stages in life.

He was an older gentleman Fonseca-Chavez did not recognize. She said she didn't think much of his age because the college receives many older students, and his name did not immediately ring a bell.

But during a short break, Fonseca-Chavez went back to her office and Googled Gutierrez's name. A long list of articles and entries appeared, highlighting his many achievements, which Gutierrez had not shared.

He was a political consultant and a migrant advocate in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2002, Gutierrez had run for governor. And more recently Gutierrez served as Maricopa County Community College District president.

His push for fair wages for Latino workers, health care for the poor, community college accessibility in south Phoenix, professional sports stadiums in downtown Phoenix, and protection of immigrant rights created institutional changes that have benefited millions of Arizona residents.

"Sir, you didn't tell me exactly who you were," Fonseca-Chavez recalled telling Gutierrez. "I told him I would be so honored to work with him."

Gutierrez told Fonseca-Chavez he was working on a novel set in a mining town in Arizona in the 1960s. The novel is based on Gutierrez's life growing up in Miami.

Fonseca-Chavez and Rafael Martinez, a professor of Southwest borderlands at Arizona State University, worked with Gutierrez on creating an independent study program based on the novel to earn the final credits he needed to finish his degree. Gutierrez had never written a novel. Fonseca-Chavez helped him develop characters, narrative flow and other literary devices.

The novel has been edited and will soon be sent to publishers.

Fonseca-Chavez said work with Gutierrez was humbling.

"Just knowing that at the time he stood up for Mexicanas who were working in the laundry at ASU in the 1960s – it's incredible that he stood up for them, and then the consequence of that was not being able to finish a degree," Fonseca-Chavez said.

Now, nearly 60 years later, he has.

Paul Byrnes joined Emory in 2008 and guided efforts on faculty salary competitiveness, tuition planning and graduate student funding.

Paul Byrnes, vice provost for academic finance, will serve as the next senior vice chancellor of finance and administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, effective July 1.

Byrnes joined Emory as senior director of business services in 2008 before becoming the associate dean for finance and operations and chief business officer for the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed vice provost for academic finance within the Office of the Provost.

During his career at Emory, Byrnes led a wide range of initiatives focused on improving the university's financial and operational sustainability. He championed efforts to expand funding for graduate student stipends, revamp the tuition planning process, develop faculty salary equity and competitiveness analyses, and implement student lifecycle measures to complement Emory’s graduation and retention efforts.

Ravi V. Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs , describes Byrnes as a collaborative team leader and strategic analyst who worked with Office of the Provost staff, academic deans and chief business officers across campus to continuously improve administrative structures and optimize financial and operational resources.
