Yale psychiatry, psychology programs ranked among nation's best by U.S. News

Yale School of Medicine’s psychiatry, psychology, and clinical psychology programs were ranked among the country’s best graduate school specialties by U.S. News & World Report in its 2019 rankings.

Among psychiatry programs, Yale ranked fourth in the country based on data and surveys for 2018, and third for psychology. Yale’s clinical psychology program tied for fourth. Yale was the only medical school to be ranked among the top four in the three specialties.

"At Yale, we have long appreciated the vitality and impact of our Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. The new U.S. News & World Report 2019 rankings of Graduate and Medical Programs further attests to the remarkable robustness of our psychiatry-psychology community," said John H. Krystal, MD, Chair of the Yale Department of Psychiatry. "Yale ranked #3 in psychology, #4 in clinical psychology and #4 in psychiatry. No other university in the country ranks in the top five programs in all three areas. There are already many bridges between the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry and the new rankings spur us to look for new opportunities for synergy across departments."

According to U.S. News, rankings are based on reputational surveys of academic leaders, including deans, and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, and students.

Statistical surveys of more than 2,000 programs were conducted, and U.S. News considered reputation surveys sent to more than 20,500 academics and professionals in 2017 and early 2018.

Psychiatry was a new specialty ranking for medical schools this year, along with anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, and surgery.

The Yale Department of Psychiatry is a world leader in patient care, research, and education. It led all U.S. medical schools in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding for psychiatric research in 2017. Its faculty and researchers continue to make discoveries that are transforming the understanding and treatment of mental illness and addiction.

Discipline is 14th among public universities

The University of California, Irvine has been ranked 14th (up from 19th) for the best psychology program among the nation’s public universities in U.S. News & World Report’s annual graduate school rankings.

“We are delighted, but hardly surprised, to see the ranking for psychology at UCI continue to climb,” Dean Jon Gould said. “Their peers nationwide recognize the groundbreaking research our faculty are pursuing, and with the addition of the new clinical Ph.D. program, the Department of Psychological Science will continue to soar. We’re now a top-15 program among public universities, and we expect to be in the top 10 in the years ahead.”

Psychology, ranked 30th (up from 36th) over all universities nationwide, is administered by the Department of Psychological Science in the School of Social Ecology and the Department of Cognitive Sciences in the School of Social Sciences.

“We are excited that our increased research productivity, strong undergraduate and graduate programs, and excellent students are being recognized,” said Susan Charles, chair of psychological science.  “We are producing research that addresses some of the most fundamental issues in society, and our students and faculty are among the best in the field.”

The school has 1,276 undergrads, majoring in psychological science, 80 doctoral students and eight post doctoral scholars in psychological science this quarter.

The department includes 36 faculty members, including prominent scholars who are experts on child development, memory, trauma and aging, among other topics. Their specialties include everything from developmental, social, personality, health, psychology and law, biological, clinical, cultural, community, environmental, and ecological psychology. The faculty are united by an overarching interest in understanding the origins of human behavior as it develops across the life course and in diverse sociocultural contexts. They also share a strong commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and to research that has the potential for application to important societal problems.

The degree programs include:

Alum: The Optics program is the toughest offered at the school. Optics grads do twice as much (60 credit hours instead of 30) class work as other degrees. You learn a ton! The field is so diverse you can pick and choose what subfields to focus on, and all fields are offered. Amazing professors. In all my classes, I felt one professor was bad at teaching. All the others were very competent, and the best were extremely passionate about their class/field of research. ... Read 2 reviews

Graduate Student: Overall, it’s pretty good to be a grad student at TU in A&S, but that is changing rapidly. The faculty care about us and the other students do as well, but neither the Board of Trustees nor the President nor the Provost (now acting President) actually care about this particular group of students. They’d honestly rather A&S disappear to make way for “industry jobs”. If your goal is to pursue Psychology, then TU is a solid option. Other degrees housed under A&S? I’d look elsewhere just to be safe. ... Read 1 review

Undergraduate program is ninth among public universities

In its first time being ranked by US News & World Report , UC Irvine’s undergraduate psychology program came in ninth among public universities and 20th  among all public and private universities nationwide.

“While our esteemed faculty are widely recognized for their impactful research addressing societal challenges, this ranking underscores our unwavering dedication to delivering a first-rate undergraduate education,” says Nicholas Scurich , professor and chair of psychological science. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work and passion of everyone in our department. We remain committed to providing the best possible education to our undergraduate students, empowering them to excel in their future careers.”

The US News & World Report’s 2023-24 list of “Best Colleges,” released today, also ranked UCI 10th among the nation’s public universities – and 33rd overall.

The rankings of undergraduate psychology programs are based on the results of surveys sent to department chairs and senior faculty at psychology departments at a regionally accredited institution that awarded a medium to large number of bachelor's degrees in psychology.

At UCI, psychology is administered by the Department of Psychological Science in the School of Social Ecology and the Department of Cognitive Sciences in the School of Social Sciences.

“I am delighted, but not at all surprised, to see our undergraduate psychology program receive such high national recognition,” says Jon Gould , dean of the School of Social Ecology. “Our faculty are not only world-class researchers, but they are also dedicated to providing a top-flight education to undergraduate students, many of whom are the first in their family to attend college. That our program has achieved these heights coming on the heels of the pandemic is further proof of the creativity and adaptability of our faculty and staff.”

The undergraduate psychological science program has about 1,200 students. Courses include study in developmental, social, health and abnormal psychology, as well as environmental, clinical, and community psychology. A number of advanced courses delve into the psychological aspects of important societal issues and problems, such as child abuse, violence, divorce, work and family, and community health.

Psychological science undergraduates also gain rigorous training in research methods and statistics. All are required to gain experience in internships through the School of Social Ecology’s Field Study Program . Opportunities for field study for psychological science majors are offered in myriad settings, including schools, child care facilities, counseling centers, senior citizen centers, hospitals and other health care settings, and social service agencies. Undergrads also can participate in faculty research projects.

Last year, US News ranked UCI’s psychology graduate program 14th among public universities .

In its latest   rankings, UCI ranked No. 12 overall in the subcategory of social mobility, which rates the institutions that enroll and graduate large proportions of students awarded federal Pell Grants — given to undergraduates who display exceptional financial need. Today, 38 percent of UCI’s undergraduates receive Pell Grants, and the campus is among the best in the nation for the graduation rate of its Pell Grant recipients. In 2023, 3,636 earned bachelor’s degrees.

Available online , the results come on the heels of UCI being ranked ninth in the nation among public universities for best value in the Princeton Review college survey. The ratings service cited UCI’s stellar academics, affordability through comparatively lower tuition costs and generous financial aid, and strong career prospects for graduates. On Sept. 7, The New York Times ranked UCI No. 16 on its College-Access Index, a list of the country’s 286 most selective universities placed in order of economic diversity. UCI was rated first among public universities in California and tied for No. 1 among members of the prestigious Association of American Universities.   For its 2023-24 Best Colleges in America list, Money again ranked UCI at the top . It was one of 34 U.S. universities to receive a five-star rating (the highest possible), and Money lauded the campus for offering a high-quality education, for its affordability and for its student outcomes.

For the 13th year in a row, Harvard University has been ranked as the world’s leading university by the Center for World University Rankings . Now in its thirteenth year of providing such rankings, the 2024 CWUR lists the top 2000 universities out of 20,966 institutions evaluated across the globe.

This year, the global top-10 was as follows:

1. Harvard University

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

3. Stanford University

4. University of Cambridge

5. University of Oxford

6. Princeton University

7. Columbia University

8. University of Pennsylvania

9. Yale University

10. California Institute of Technology

This marks the sixth year in a row that Harvard, MIT and Stanford have taken the first three spots in that order. In CWUR’s 2018-19 rankings, Harvard ranked first, with Stanford taking second and MIT in third place.

Of the top ten universities for 2024, eight were in the U.S. the other two were British institutions — the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

Rounding out the top-25 universities were:

11.University of Chicago

12.University of California, Berkeley

13.University of Tokyo

14.Cornell University

15.Northwestern University

16.University of Michigan

17.University of California, Los Angeles

18.Johns Hopkins University

19.PSL University (France)

20.University College London

21.Duke University

22.University of Illinois

23.University of Tornoto

24.New York University

25.University of Washington

Methodology

CWUR evaluates universities on these four factors:

Education is based on the academic success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university's size (25%)

Employability is determined by the professional success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university's size (25%)

Faculty is measured by the number of faculty members earning top academic distinctions (10%)

Research is based on a composite of four indicators:

i) Research Output — the total number of research papers (10%);

ii) High-Quality Publications — the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (10%);

iii) Influence — the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals (10%);

iv) Citations — the number of highly-cited research papers (10%).

National Comparisons

The U.S. had the most universities in the top 2000 with 329; 19 of the top 25 universities were in the U.S., and all eight of the institutions in the Ivy League placed in the top 70. China had 324 institutions in the top 2000, and Japan had 110 top-2000 institutions.

There were 92 institutions in the United Kingdom among the top 2000 schools, led by the University of Cambridge, which was judged to be the top public university in the world for the 11th year in a row. France had 73 representatives in the top 2000, while Russia had 46 institutions.

The news comes at a good time for U.S. universities, which have recently been rocked by charges of antisemitism and Islamophobia, prolonged campus demonstrations over the war in Gaza, enrollment declines, and waning public confidence.

Because of a methodology that relies on quantitative indictors and that emphasizes research, CWUR’s rankings may be less subject to shifts in opinions about reputation sampled in other ranking systems. In addition, the numbers it calculates have considerable lag built into them so even those factors that might reflect public opinion, like graduates’ employability, are unlikely to reflect current attitudes.

Which psychology field is right for me?

May 15, 2024

Reading time: 4 minutes

Are you interested in using theory, analysis and evidence-based approaches to understand how people think, learn, develop and behave and to help them thrive? If you want to explore new ways to make a difference, the options for discovering your professional path in psychology may seem endless – and you may have found that you need advanced knowledge and skills to take the next step.

What skills can I develop with a psychology degree?

The specific skills that can be useful in the field of psychology will vary depending on the area of study you pursue and your degree level. Some of the broad skills that are important to develop include:

  • Communication: Strong communication skills are an asset for helping individuals, groups or organizations, conveying research findings or working with colleagues.
  • Ethical awareness: You may be required to handle sensitive information, which means respecting confidentiality.
  • Analysis and critical thinking: When you conduct research or work with your stakeholders, you should be able to interpret data and understand how to apply what you know to different situations.
  • Patience: Making progress toward specific goals takes time, whether it’s discussing solutions with a patient or conducting research on a study.
  • Empathy and active listening: Understanding and recognizing the feelings of others starts with giving your full attention and knowing how to recognize verbal and nonverbal cues.
  • Inclusivity: Recognizing the diverse perspectives of people and their communities and examining your own biases can help you adapt your approach to different needs.

Which area of psychology is right for me?

As you explore areas of psychology, these questions may help you figure out your interests:

  • Who do you want to help?
  • Are you more interested in clinical or applied areas of psychology?
  • What issues do you want to focus on?

Your answers to these questions can help you find paths to explore, including degree options that could help you pursue your professional goals. You will need to conduct your own research to understand what opportunities may be available to you. Note that some professional paths may require you to have previous experience, licensure,* certifications or other designations along with a degree.

While Capella cannot guarantee that a graduate will secure any specific career outcome – such as a job title, promotion, salary increase or other career outcome – we encourage you to research requirements for your job target and career goals.

*It is important to understand all educational and individual requirements for licensing. Capella University cannot guarantee licensure, certification or endorsement. State regulations vary regarding professional licensure. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with requirements for your state.

A graduation message for psychology students, personal perspective: lessons on purpose, persistence, and community..

Posted May 9, 2024 | Reviewed by Monica Vilhauer

Last year, I delivered the graduation speech for Oregon State University's School of Psychological Science, and I think the message is even more relevant today.

Three lessons on purpose , persistence , and community can help you navigate life's next chapter. From psychological research, we know that facts and figures are less impactful than personal stories, so I’ll pepper in examples from my own experiences along the way.

Think back to why you decided to become a psychology major. Was it because of a desire to help people? An insatiable curiosity about human nature? To make a difference in people’s lives? For me, it was all of the above.

Kathleen Bogart

I have been interested in psychology ever since I was born. I was born with Moebius syndrome , a disability characterized by facial paralysis and the inability to move my eyes from side to side. At an early age, I understood that the way I communicated was unusual, that people were confused by my lack of facial expression. I became fascinated with communication and social interaction.

These interests led me to study psychology as a college student. Toward the end of my bachelor’s I set out to do my very first college term paper on Moebius syndrome. I showed up at the library expecting to find pages and pages of answers, but I discovered there was only a handful of psych papers published on it! This was bad news for two reasons: First, I didn’t have enough sources to write my term paper. Second, my chosen field had not included people like me.

I realized I was at a crossroads. I could give up and choose another path, or I could start developing the psychological knowledge in this area.

I chose the latter. I knew that I had the unique motivation and insight to grow this field. So I applied to graduate school—but the first time I applied, I was rejected from every single program.

Graduate training in psychology research follows a mentorship model, and because there were few psychologists studying disability, and few psychologists who had disabilities themselves, I struggled to find an advisor who was interested in this topic. Eventually, I found supportive allies to be my mentors. I was the speaker at my own PhD graduation ceremony, when my mentor Dr. Linda Tickle-Degnen hooded me. Just over 10 years later, I spoke at the graduation ceremony, where I am now a faculty member, and hooded my first disabled PhD student.

I've spent more than 15 years studying ableism, or prejudice toward people with disability. Nearly 20% of Americans have a disability, making it one of the largest minority groups in the U.S. And one that is now a little less underrepresented in psychology.

My experience made me acutely aware of the importance of finding purpose to live a fulfilling life. Personally, my work provides meaning by helping others with similar conditions and teaching students about a broader and more diverse swath of humanity.

I encourage you to find meaning in your work. It doesn’t have to be as entrenched in your identity as mine, and it doesn’t even have to be connected to you job. But find a field, a project, or a hobby in which you feel an intense curiosity, an excitement for learning, a passion for change, and it will drive you to persevere. Success will follow. Studies consistently show that individuals who find meaning and purpose in their work are more engaged, fulfilled, and resilient.

Purpose is your own personal mission statement. What is yours? It could be to love your fellow humans, it could be to help others. Prioritize actions that align with your mission.

Mine is to make the world a more inclusive place, using psychology!

Persistence

The quote from Thomas Edison that "genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration" rings true to me. My successes are due to simple perseverance, as well as a lot of support (see lesson on community below). What keeps me going is that I find great personal meaning in my work.

My day-to-day work is not glamorous. I spend my time working with students or sitting alone in a room and writing. I make a commitment to write around the same time every day. Disabled advocate Cassie Winter calls this type of work “butt in chair time.” This simply means creating a consistent schedule to work on your priorities. Sometimes this means staring blankly and thinking through ideas; other times it means writing furiously in a flow state. My butt in chair time creates a sustainable pace, instead of falling into boom or bust cycles, and prevents burnout .

us news phd psychology rankings

Your work and hobbies may look different from mine. Swap butt in chair time to boots on the ground time, or whatever resonates with you. The point is, prioritize time to work on the things that matter to you.

Research links persistence with a growth mindset . It is important to note that the healthy kind of persistence involves flexibility, not ridged stubbornness. Albert Einstein said it well when he said “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Failure is feedback that we can learn and grow from. Change your approach and try again.

For example, when I didn’t get into any graduate schools the first time around, I realized I needed to change my strategy. I studied for the GRE using a different approach and retook it. I also broadened my search to other areas of the country and applied to masters programs. I first got into a masters program, which gave me the opportunity to hone my skills. Then I was ready to move into my goal, a PhD program.

In college and graduate school, I ached for friends and role models who identified as disabled but found none. My experience made me acutely aware of the need for better representation of marginalized people in higher education .

Now, I teach a class at OSU on the Psychology of Disability, where I give students with and without disabilities an opportunity to see representation of this important minority group and its intersections. I also co-founded the Disability Advocacy Research Network ( DARN ), an organization for disabled psychologists and students to find the community that I didn’t have earlier in my career . Last year, I delivered the speech at OSU's first disability graduation ceremony. I am so heartened that the next generation will be better able to find community.

That brings me to my last piece of advice. Find your community, or create it: a place where you can be authentically you.

As you enter a new stage in life, community will become all the more important. Seek out mentors who can guide you. Likewise, you are now in a position where you could mentor people who are just entering college. Studies have shown that strong social connections contribute to resilience and overall life satisfaction. In creating them, we not only enrich our own lives but also create a ripple effect of support in the lives of those around us.

Novel global study using investigators as participants finds shared acoustic relationships among the world’s languages and music

Three different types of traditional music clockwise from top left: a Japanese koto, Scottish bagpipes, African balafon.

By Bert Gambini

Release Date: May 15, 2024

Peter Pfordresher, PhD.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A University at Buffalo psychologist is part of a global research team that has identified specific acoustic relationships that distinguish speech, song and instrumental music across cultures.

The study published in the journal Science Advances , which involved experts in ethnomusicology, music psychology, linguistics and evolutionary biology, compared instrumental melodies along with songs, lyrics and speech in 55 languages. The findings provide an international perspective supporting ideas about how the world’s music and languages evolved into their current states.

“There are many ways to look at the acoustic features of singing versus speaking, but we found the same three significant features across all the cultures we examined that distinguish song from speech,” said Peter Pfordresher, PhD , a professor of psychology in the UB College of Arts and Sciences, and one of the 75 contributors to a unique project that involved the researchers assuming the dual roles of investigator and participant.

The three features are:

  • Singing tends to be slower than speaking across all the cultures studied.
  • People tend to produce more stable pitches when singing as opposed to speaking.
  • Overall, singing pitch is higher than spoken pitch.

The exact evolutionary pressures responsible for shaping human behaviors are difficult to identify, but the new paper provides insights regarding the shared, cross-cultural similarities and differences in language and music − both of which are found in highly diverse forms across every human culture.

Pfordresher says the leading theory, advanced by the paper’s senior author, Patrick Savage, PhD, senior research fellow at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, is that music evolved to promote social bonding .

“When people make music, and this is the case around the world, they tend to do so collectively. They synchronize and harmonize with each other,” says Pfordresher. “The features we found that distinguish music from speech fit well with that theory.”

Think about tempo as a mechanism to encourage music’s social aspects. Being in sync becomes more difficult as tempo increases. When the tempo slows, the rhythm becomes predictable and easier to follow. Music becomes a more social enterprise.

It’s the same with pitch stability, according to Pfordresher.

“It’s much easier to match a stable pitch with someone else, to be in sync with the collective, than is the case when a pitch is wavering,” he says.

Similarly, it’s possible that the higher pitches found in singing happen as a byproduct of songs being produced at a slower rate.

“Slower production rates require a greater volume of air in the lungs,” explains Pfordresher. “Greater air pressure in the vocal system increases pitch.”

Conversational speech, in contrast, is not synchronized. Conversations generally alternate between people.

“I would speculate that conversational speech is faster than song because people want to hold on to the stage. They don’t want to provide false cues that they’ve finished, in essence handing the conversation off to another speaker,” says Pfordresher. “Pausing in a conversation or speaking slowly often indicates that it’s another person’s turn to speak.”

The study’s novel structure, with its investigators as participants, is part of the increasingly global nature of music cognition research. Savage and Yuto Ozaki, PhD, the lead author from Keio University in Japan, recruited researchers from Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific, who spoke languages that included Yoruba, Mandarin, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Ukrainian, Russian, Balinese, Cherokee, Kannada, Spanish, Aynu, English and dozens more .

“First, we used this structure to counteract the unfortunate tradition of extractive research in cross-cultural musical studies in which researchers from the developed world collect, or extract, data from a culture in the developing world, and use the data to promote their own success,” says Pfordresher.

The second reason has more to do with the validity of the data.

“Our analyses require annotation of syllable and note onsets in songs and speech from around the world,” says Pfordresher. “No single investigator knows all of these languages. By having each investigator participate and thus check their own annotations, we add additional validity to our study.”

Each investigator-participant chose a song of national significance from their culture. Pfordresher selected “America the Beautiful.” Savage chose “Scarborough Fair.” Ozaki sang the Japanese folk song “Ōmori Jinku.”

Participants sang the song first; performed an instrumental version next on an instrument of their choice; and then recited the lyrics. They also provided an explanation for their choice as a free-form speech condition of the study. All four conditions were recorded and then segmented.

To avoid the possibility of bias creeping into the data, Pfordresher explained that not all investigators were involved in generating the study’s initial set of hypotheses. All of the authors looked at the data, but did so to make sure there were no differences between the initial group and those others.

“We do hope to follow up this study with other research that has authors from around the world sample data from within their cultures,” says Pfordresher.
