Vikram review: Kamal Haasan’s glorious comeback lays the groundwork for Tamil cinema’s most ambitious franchise

Vikram review: kamal haasan’s film marks the beginning of tamil cinema’s biggest franchise. fahadh faasil and vijay sethupathi make their presence felt with strong performances..

Lokesh Kanagaraj , with films like Kaithi and Master, is evolving into a filmmaker Tamil cinema needs to take seriously and celebrate. What he’s attempted and achieved with his latest film Vikram , which marks the glorious comeback of Kamal Haasan after a lull, is something that not many filmmakers can even envision, let alone execute. Read more: Kamal Haasan says he is glad audience is awaiting his comeback

Kamal Haasan in a still from Vikram.

A self-confessed Kamal Haasan fan, Lokesh not only paid a heartfelt tribute to his ‘guru’, with Vikram – a sequel of sorts to Kamal’s 1986 film of the same name – he teased the beginning of a franchise; one that could keep Kamal active for years to come. Vikram allows Kamal to have fun, and he’s helped by Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi , who make their presence felt with strong performances

Vikram begins where Lokesh’s Kaithi left off. Months after the biggest drug bust Tamil Nadu police ever pulled, two containers full of drugs went missing in Chennai, and local gangs have to retrieve it at any cost before the crime lord and the leader of the drug mafia Rolex – played by Suriya – makes everybody pay. Meanwhile, a group of masked men are on a killing spree, taking the lives of some high-ranking officers, which includes a young official in the narcotics control bureau, played by Kalidas.

Kamal plays Karnan in the film. When his son becomes a victim of the gang, he sets out on a mission to take revenge. What feels like just another tale of revenge soon turns into a mission orchestrated by Karnan, who is introduced much later as agent Vikram – the original character essayed by Kamal in the 1986 film.

You’ve got to hand it to Lokesh Kanagaraj for bringing back Kamal’s highly-underrated agent Vikram character, three decades later; and using it so effectively in a story that couldn’t have been told better.

However, the film does falter at places and isn’t consistently engaging, but it manages to merge key characters from Lokesh’s earlier film Kaithi and sets the stage for what could be Tamil cinema’s biggest franchise in the making. What Lokesh manages to achieve with Vikram, which feels slightly long with nearly a three-hour running time, is to give a new generation of audiences a glimpse of Kamal Haasan’s versatility. It was rewarding to see the veteran shine after a long time.

If you can look at Vikram beyond some of its rough edges, this is easily the most satisfying love letter to Kamal Haasan from Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is his big fan. It is amazing to see Kamal warm up to a young filmmaker’s sensibilities and be willing to not hog all the limelight in the movie. For most of the first half, Kamal is nowhere to be seen, but he makes a solid impact in the scenes he’s present.

Fahadh Faasil gets the second most meaty part among the ensemble cast; and he’s terrific. Vijay Sethupathi continues to shine in peculiar roles that are best suited for his personality, and it’s refreshing to see Lokesh use him efficiently after Master.

Anirudh Ravichander’s music, especially the background score, plays a pivotal role in amplifying the overall experience of watching Vikram on the big screen, apart from the terrific action sequences. Suriya’s brief but powerful cameo is just the high one needs as you step out of Vikram.

Vikram Movie Review: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil shine in this uneven film

Director lokesh kanagaraj’s vikram, starring kamal haasan, vijay sethupathi and fahadh faasil, has several whistle-worthy moments. but, the plot becomes too generic after a point..

Listen to Story

(L-R) Vijay Sethupathi, Kamal Haasan and Fahadh Faasil play lead roles in Vikram.

  • Vikram is an action entertainer directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
  • Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil play lead roles.
  • Suriya appears in a cameo in the film.

After an explosive trailer, all eyes were on Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram, which brings together three powerful performers - Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil. Vikram is a part of the Kaithi universe and Lokesh Kanagaraj made it official just hours before the film’s release. So, those who are not familiar with Kaithi (Lokesh’s second film) might feel disconnected from Vikram.

In Vikram, Karnan (Kamal Haasan), Amar (Fahadh Faasil) and Sandhanam (Vijay Sethupathi) are at loggerheads. Multiple police officers die and a masked group of men claim responsibility. While Amar carries out the investigation, we are curious to know how they all came together. It is here that the ‘ghost’ gets exposed and transports us right into the story. Who or what is this 'ghost' and whether Amar and Sandhanam succeed in their mission, forms the story.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram has his stamp all over it. In several interviews, the filmmaker spoke about his love for Kamal Haasan. Every frame in which Haasan appears will make you sit up and take notice. Though Kamal Haasan has less screen presence in the first half, he manages to keep us intrigued. After him, it is Fahadh’s show all the way. The investigation scenes in the first half pull us together when the film gets too generic. Vijay Sethupathi as Sandhanam seems like an extension of his character from Master.

Vikram is not a film without flaws. The action entertainer takes its own sweet time to establish the story, which tests our patience. But, once it does, there’s no stopping Vikram. The film has several whistle-worthy moments which will make you hoot for the actors. Watch out for the brilliant interval block and the lead up to it. Similarly, Suriya’s cameo as Rolex stole the show even though he appeared just for five minutes.

The action sequences are tastefully done and it is brilliant to see Kamal Haasan perform them with so much ease. In fact, it was such a delight to see Ulaganayagan back in action after four years. He scores in the action sequences as well as the emotional ones.

The supporting characters played by Kalidas Jayaram, Narain and Chemban Vinod Jose work extremely well. Vikram is also a technically sound film. Be it the cinematography by Girish Gangadharan or the crisp editing by Philomin Raj, the technical department worked in tandem. Another hero of Vikram is Anirudh Ravichander’s explosive background score. There’s variety and oomph, which helps in elevating important sequences.

Vikram, however, suffers from an uneven screenplay. If only the first half were etched in a taut manner, the film’s impact could have been a notch higher. The second half makes up for the negatives, though, but is it enough?

Overall, Vikram is a film that has some terrific performances and makes you inquisitive about the Lokesh Kanagaraj universe. Some of the scenes don’t land, but there are plenty to cherish and rejoice in.

3 out of 5 stars for Vikram. ALSO READ | Kamal Haasan's Vikram trailer lights up Burj Khalifa ahead of release. Watch Published By: Nairita Mukherjee Published On: Jun 3, 2022 --- ENDS ---

‘Vikram’ review: Kamal Haasan’s comeback is an adrenaline rush

This is just the beginning, Vikram (Kamal Haasan) says at the point at which the interval card flashes on the screen.

Right he is. Vikram, a former undercover agent who leads a vigilante group that targets drug traffickers, is used to issuing commands and having them obeyed. The 173-minute Tamil film named after him obeys, being almost entirely prologue for its pre-interval section. Well over an hour is devoted to the mystery of just who Vikram is.

Hot on his trail are government investigator Amar (Fahadh Faasil) and druglord Sandhanam (Vijay Sethupathi), who is missing a vital consignment and is being harassed by his boss Rolex.

Writer-director Lokesh Kanagaraj brings to a routine crime thriller both the flourish he displayed in his 2019 Tamil hit Kaithi and his skill with moulding movie stars to his vision (apart from the three A-listers, there’s an electric cameo by a fourth). Kanagaraj’s Vikram , which has also been dubbed in Hindi, is part of a “Kaithi universe”. Some plot points and characters are derived from that film, while the climax suggests more spin-offs.

Vikram is spilling over with gruesome violence, elaborately choreographed action scenes, dark humour, plot twists, and at least one cute child. Amar has a girlfriend too, but it’s another female character who is likely to draw the cheers.

Fittingly for a film involving drugs, there’s a narcotic quality to many moments. From the substance that gives Sandhanam the ability to channel his inner kung fu master to Anirudh Ravichander’s pulsating Tamil-English soundtrack, Vikram is always big on the adrenaline rush.

The delirium increases in the post-interval section, which is essentially a massive stand-off between Sandhanam, Vikram and Amar. The weaponry get more elaborate, the blood flows, and the action is dialled up as Kanagaraj aims for a literal blast-off.

vikram movie review the hindu

Not all of the 173 minutes is earned, especially since the plot can be dashed off on a paper napkin. (For all his intelligence, Amar conveniently misses a vital clue into Vikram’s past.) Kanagaraj is sometimes a bit too busy mounting his Kaithiverse to make Vikram a satisfying standalone film in itself.

Although designed as a comeback vehicle for Kamal Haasan, who is also the producer, Vikram keeps its fandom in check. Haasan plays the veteran vigilante with panache and authority. He also gets to deliver soliloquies (some of them in English, of course), and the film does come to a halt when he is declaiming, but it also moves on to the other stars in the blood-splattered sky.

Fahadh Faasil brings to Amar an alert, chameleon-like quality and a ruthless edge. Vijay Sethupathi’s Sandhanam has two gold teeth, a generous midriff and a colourful wardrobe. But Sethupathi’s proven ability to deliver dashed-odd lines and convey deeply felt malice make his character an object of fear rather than parody.

The notable actors in the extended cast include Chemban Vinod Jose as Amar’s boss. The master of ceremonies in the ensemble piece is undeniably the director himself. In a film about the levels of deception, the biggest con job involves Kanagaraj’s ability to retain attention during an overlong and often brutal film.

Vikram Movie Review| Fulfilling action saves this ambitious multi-starrer

A still from Kamal Haasan-starrer 'Vikram'.. (File Photo)

Clearly, Lokesh Kanagaraj isn’t one to make a film and forget about it. It’s well-known by now—especially after Lokesh himself published a statement on the eve of Vikram’s release—that the Kamal Haasan-film shares its universe with the filmmaker’s second, Kaithi. Set after the events of Kaithi, you see Bejoy (Narain) making an extended appearance, even as some other faces from Kaithi step in and out as well.

You learn that their boss is Sandhanam (Vijay Sethupathi, playing a drug-addled, quirky boss). I liked that Sethupathi experiments with his look and dialogue delivery in this film. As for the Lokesh filmography links, there’s quite a bit from Kaithi, including the protagonist being called the Ghost. I also found it hard not to think of Master given that you see Karnan (Kamal) getting hammered for much of the first half, even though Vikram doesn’t belong in the same universe.

Vikram’s first half is a fascinating exercise, marked by surprisingly swift appearances from Kamal Haasan, playing Karnan (and later, Vikram). Lokesh may have called a lot of attention to his admiration for Kamal Haasan (he called this film a ‘fanboy sambavam’), but well into an hour of the film, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no real urgency in utilising Kamal’s physical presence. I say ‘physical’ because his spiritual presence is smattered all over the film until the interval reveal.

Lokesh takes his time to introduce you to the world, to the motivations and fears of Sandhanam, to the ruthlessness and romance of Amar. It’s fair, I think, to say that his vision here isn’t as diluted as in Master. In fact, so much does Lokesh revels in these multi-starrers that for much of this film, it feels almost like Amar were the protagonist, even as he digs into the case of the police murders. Fahadh Faasil gets ample screen time to express himself, and I enjoyed that even his relationship with Gayathrie, as hurried as it is, feels fresh.

Kamal, of course, comes in with flourish, charisma, and quirk. Most importantly, he seems to be having a lot of fun in this film. In particular, his return to action territory is enjoyable and it is much credit to his energy reserves that I bought every set-piece he’s a part of. I enjoyed the attempts to create unique set-pieces in this film. One stunt sequence happens in silence, for instance. In another, there’s the beautiful idea of a man forced to kill many men in order to be able to feed a baby. The actor’s Americanised English still seems to come in the way of organic dialogue delivery, and his Chennai Thamizh, which seemed par for the course in the pre-Ranjith era, feels a tad exaggerated now. I also didn’t care for what seemed to be a passing dig at a dwarf.

In this film with as many impressive action blocks involving Kamal Haasan, my most favorite is one that doesn’t involve him. It features a woman, who gets a Tarantinoesque announcement of her identity. The violence is all tastefully shot and inventively choreographed, but after a while, it began ringing a bit hollow. For lack of it, even though Vikram stands against the idea that this could be a revenge story, it’s hard to see it as anything but that. The line about drugs affecting society rings fairly cursory too. Some other ideas too don’t affect as they should—like a toilet flush resulting in a bomb blast, like the resuscitation of a baby…

It’s perhaps the influence of The Dark Knight on a generation of filmmakers and filmgoers that it’s impossible not to think of the film when you see echoes elsewhere. In Vikram, for instance, there is a dialogue about masks being needed to do good. Characters wear a bit too much makeup to disguise themselves. And there’s even a dutiful government officer who loses his spouse and steps into the dark side. But where the English film, despite being about all the action, was a thorough dissection of humanity, of the sacrifice it takes to do good, of the interdependency of good and evil, Vikram is largely content to capture the carnage. It looks good, but I’m not sure it feels as good as a Kaithi did.

And yet, Vikram’s merits lie in how Lokesh refuses to have succumbed to the temptation of making a film that sings paeans for the superstar. Who knows, the filmmaker might well go on to realise his vision of creating a series of films connected to each other and occurring in the same universe—films that may bring into the fold more stars like Suriya and provide a platform in which they can play characters they couldn’t otherwise.

The future seems full of possibilities and that’s my most heartening takeaway from Vikram. If, however, you went all binary on me, and posed a variation of the question that was asked so famously to Velu Naicker—and in this film, to Vikram: “Vikram nalla padama ketta padama?” I’d have to take a page from their book and respond with a rather vague answer. Much like the morality of both characters, I’ll have to say it lies somewhere in between, and much like those two men, the film does tilt towards the good.

Director: Lokesh Kanagaraj Cast: Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathi, Gayathrie Rating: 3/5

Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kamal Haasan-starrer 'Vikram' is explosively charming | Movie Review

Princy Alexander

What happens in a face-off between a bunch of bad guys and the not-so-bad guys? You got it right if you thought "guns, action, and more action" was the probable answer.

But that's just glossing through the periphery of 'Vikram', starring Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathy. 'Vikram' is driven strongly by emotion and bonds between individuals but elevated greatly by the use of guns and action that can only be pulled off so magnificently by an uncompromising filmmaker like Lokesh Kanagaraj.

The theme is cocaine and the underworld running its cartel. A dangerous gang is on the loose after a bunch of consignments carrying their substance is seized. So is a masked man whose identity remains a mystery till the interval.

Multiple-record breaking film 'Vikram' to begin streaming on OTT on this date

The director had mentioned in several interviews that he is a fan of Kamal Haasan's works and this movie is a perfect tribute to the superstar, who is back on screen after a hiatus. Kamal has once again proved there is nothing he cannot do. He looks dapper than ever, handling guns (like a cowboy air rifle or a Hellboy M4) and does action with the ease of a man who has never shied away from experimenting on looks, stories and style throughout his career.

vikram movie review the hindu

It's very evident that Lokesh's confidence in attempting some path-breaking techniques in the movie, has been derived from the presence of the actor, who has been credited for introducing global-style elements in his movies.

Fahadh Faasil is a delight to watch as he essays the role of a black squad agent, who is on an important mission. He owns the first half of the movie, making a huge impact throughout the movie as he shifts between playing the tough, reckless guy and a lover, who does not reveal his profession to the person that means the world to him.

It wouldn't be wrong to say he is the driving force of the film.

vikram movie review the hindu

You don't see Vijay Sethupathi doing many villain roles these days, but when he does, he means business. Of course, his character is poles apart from the lover he played in the recently released movie 'Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal' and Vijay looks very comfortable in his role. Malayalee actor Chemban Vinod does not disappoint either in his role as a tainted cop.

Many movies are made as sequels, but Lokesh has never claimed that 'Vikram' would be a sequel to 'Kaithi' starring Karthik and Narain, which released in 2019. But, what else can one expect it to be when several references made in the movie, remind you of the scenes from the previous blockbuster. Narain's arrival on screen and the mention of a ghost, uttered by Fahadh Faasil in 'Vikram', confirms there is a lot of connection between the two movies. Whatever universe Lokesh has made us enter, it's overwhelming, but enticing, to say the least and you can expect either a sequel to Kaithi or Vikram in Lokesh's next.

vikram movie review the hindu

The music by Anirudh, who is an established name in Tamil cinema, and cinematography by Girish Gangadharan are simply brilliant, blending so well with the movie and taking it to an altogether different realm. The stunts are also exceptional. For those who fancy watching guns do all the talking in action movies, 'Vikram' will blow your mind. It's not everyday that you see a canon or other olden-age ammunition part of a modern-day action movie.

Kamal's movies are incomplete, if there is no mention of politics or an ideology and in 'Vikram', ideology takes centre stage.

Overall, the makers have to be applauded for introducing a global-style of storytelling. The story ends, not with a bang, but with a promise that there is more to come.

Vikram: Hitlist Review - Kamal Haasan Packs A Punch, Fahadh Faasil And Vijay Sethupathi Sail Through With Aplomb

Vikram: Hitlist : Kamal Haasan in a still from the trailer. (courtesy YouTube )

Cast: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil

Director : Lokesh Kanagaraj

Rating:   3 stars (out of 5)

In his fourth directorial outing, Lokesh Kanagaraj gives full rein to the Kamal Haasan fanboy in him even as he blends elements from a film that the superstar headlined three-and-a-half decades ago with components from the crime-infested universe of his own smash hit Kaithi (2019).

The result - released in Hindi as Vikram: Hitlist , Kamal Haasan's first release in four years - isn't without its share of flaws but it is never less than exciting: a potent, persuasive medley of genres. The film has it all - espionage, serial killings, vigilantism, a covert police investigation and a drug bust that unleashes mayhem.

Vikram , which shares its title with a 1986 film in which Kamal Haasan played a secret agent on the trail of an intercontinental ballistic missile that goes missing in transit, revolves around a crusade for a "drug-free world".

Kanagaraj wrote the script with Kamal Haasan primarily in mind. Vikram: Hitlist does not, however, go overboard with its obeisance to the veteran. The latter, on his part, leaves room for co-actors Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil to share the limelight in a compelling action thriller packed with explosions, chases, gunfights, hyper-heroic acts and all the stuff that the writer-director needs in order to conjure up a cinematic universe of his own.

Kamal Haasan, who has produced the film under his Raj Kamal Films International banner, starts off the proceedings with a musical set piece that is hardly of a piece with the rest of the hi-octane crime drama. No sooner has the song run its course than he disappears for a bit only to resurface in brief flashbacks, leaving the audience wondering what the deal really is.

The deal is that, with Kamal Haasan stepping away from the spotlight, the script carves out space for Fahadh Faasil, in the guise a plainclothes cop who specializes in dangerous undercover operations, to make his presence felt. He, of course, delivers more than just occasional flashes of genius. Faasil's is a performance of sustained brilliance.

Even when Vijay Sethupathi, playing a dreaded drug lord desperately looking for a shipment that has dropped out of sight, steps in to add another striking dimension to the tale, it is Faasil, delivering a characteristically effortless performance that straddles a wide spectrum of emotions, who steals the thunder.

In its first 20-30 minutes or so, Vikram: Hitlist delivers a somewhat disorienting information overload. As one struggles to grasp the goings-on and the befuddled mind wanders a touch, one does have three actors on the screen who you cannot take your eyes off. However, as the pace of the film settles and the flurry of details gives way to steadier plot exposition, it all begins to fall in place and soar.

A consignment of raw substance shipped for the production of thousands of kilograms of cocaine is whisked away by a brave young policeman in Chennai. A series of murders, including that of Karan (Kamal Haasan), follows. It leaves the city police force groping for answers.

Amar (Faasil), a policeman who operates in the shadows and is deployed only for top secret missions, is called in to nab a gang of mysterious masked men who are believed to be responsible for the killings. As his probe progresses, the film reveals snatches from the life of the dead Karan, raising a string of questions about the man and his fate.

Masks, assumed identities and fate play key roles in Vikram: Hitlist . We are told that Amar's name might not be his real one. Nobody quite knows what lies behind the face. Even his girlfriend (Gayathrie Shankar) is in the dark about the nature of his job - concealment is a necessary part of who Amar is.

Moreover, it also begins to appear as if the image that the murdered Karan has left the world with - that of an alcoholic womanizer - may only be a smokescreen. It is for the super sleuth Amar to discover the missing pieces and complete the jigsaw puzzle.

Kamal Haasan packs a punch as an action-oriented character who is capable of being mindful of his advancing years and paternal instincts. He is a grandfather to a boy with a worrisome medical condition, a facet of the character that comes to the fore as the film begins to reveal facts of a life and a career that have been off the radar for a long while.

Chandan (Vijay Sethupathi), a drug addict whose mind works markedly faster than his tongue, emerges at the end of Amar's search. But are the police any closer to solving the serial murder case? And where does a spy who vanished into the cold fit into a running battle between the drug mafia and the anti-narcotics bureau?

Kanagaraj is no hurry to throw light on the whys and wherefores of the actions that the film opens with and the developments that take place in the aftermath. But we stay consistently invested because Vikram: Hitlist is a lively blend of a slow crackle and a frenetic full-steam-ahead rhythm.

Vikram: Hitlist has at least two other 'stars' who are at their very best: director of photography Girish Gangadharan and music composer Anirudh. The Angamaly Diaries and Jallikattu cinematographer lends the film stunning fluidity, while Anirudh comes up with a background score that acquires a life of its own and gushes through the thriller like an unstoppable mountain stream.

Vikram: Hitlist gets a tad repetitive at its business end but the propulsive nature of the action and the quality of the principal performances - a few of the supporting actors, too, get their opportunities, especially Narain whose Kaithi character, Inspector Bejoy, and Vasanthi who plays a housemaid with a secret whose revelation turns out to be one of high points of Vikram: Hitlist .

Kamal Haasan is, as has been emphasized already, fabulous. Vijay Sethupathi fleshes out an edgy criminal whose frazzled heart and addled mind push him in startling directions. Fahadh Faasil sails through his role with such aplomb that one can never have enough of him. How tantalizing is the prospect that the consummate show-stealer will be back to reprise the role - repeatedly hopefully - as the Lokesh Kanagaraj universe expands and moves into the future!

Vikram Movie Review: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi And Fahadh Delivered An Intense Action Thriller

Vikram Movie Review: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi And Fahadh Delivered An Intense Action Thriller

Vikram is Kamal Haasan's big release after four long years… Thus, there are many expectations on it. So, it is clear that Vikram is his one-man show but along with utilising Kamal Haasan to the core, Lokesh also developed a strong plot to elevate his screen presence. And with this movie, he proved why he is the king of the box office once again! His swag and action mode holding the rifles and guns showcased the best of him and made us witness Kamal in a complete action avatar! Vijay and Fahadh Faasil also have a special mention in this movie as Lokesh also gave them a prominent screen presence. They fought equally with Kamal and treated the movie buffs!

Vikram begins where Lokesh's Kaithi is left off… Two big containers filled with drugs go missing and the local gangs go in search of them. But the mafia leader Rolex (Suriya) makes all of them pay for their deeds and showcases his best cameo performance. But the actual story begins when the masked men kill the sincere officer Kalidas and a few more higher officials of the Police department!

Here enters the Karnan (Kamal Haasan) when he comes to know that his son is also a victim of a drug gang. He is all out to take revenge and then he is introduced as Agent Vikram the original character of Kamal in his 1986 movie with the same name! But here the plot is completely different only the role of that movie is taken from the movie! Kamal and his companions are said to be hiding from 30 years as their covert operation went sideways in the 1990s. But now to take revenge he is once again back!

Amar (Fahadh Faasil) is introduced as a cop but he has his own team which works outside the bounds of law that keep other policemen in check. Then comes Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathi)… He is a cook but wait, he doesn't come up with any delicious dish instead he produces the best quality narcotic drugs with a variety of raw materials. So, on one side it is Vikram to is determined to take revenge, other side we can witness an honest police team. On the other hand, even Amar and Santhanam also chase for the drug treasure! So, it's all about how Vikram manages to chase down the drug source and help the police to put Santhanam and Amar behind the bars!

Performances:

There is no need to mention about Kamal Haasan… Being an agent and hurt father, he is all set on a revenge action mode. He gave his best and looked terrific holding the guns! Coming to Vijay Sethupathi, these days he is making all his fans shower praises on him and even in this Santhanam role, he best fits the bill and looked like a perfect drug chef! Amar aka Fahadh owned the cop role and is seen forming his own team in the department. He also delivered his best and essayed a pivotal role. Suriya in a cameo role shined for a few minutes on the big screens.

Anirudh Ravichander's music and BGM made us own that feeling of watching an intense action movie and kept on pulling us to a suspense mode.

Conclusion:

On the whole, Vikram is all for action lovers and movie buffs as it is the best entertaining movie that hit the screens these days! A perfect concoction of action and mystery turned it out into a blockbuster!

Star Cast: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi & Fahadh Faasil Stir A Mad Tsunami As Lokesh Kanagaraj Creates Yet Another Blazing Spectacle

Director: Lokesh Kanagaraj

vikram movie review the hindu

What’s Good: A mad tsunami of talent is approaching you faster than you think, and you need to surrender. Also, high time people across the country start taking Lokesh Kanagaraj seriously, man got style none can resist.

What’s Bad: There is brutal violence and that can bother some. But after a point, it also gets a bit repetitive and you are left thinking ‘this could have been avoided’.

Loo Break: There’s Haasan, Sethupathi, and Faasil on the big screen, is nature’s call more important to you than their magic at this point?

Watch or Not?: Please watch. The three stars definitely put on an amazing show but moreover one must acknowledge Kanagaraj and his gest to stay true to his amazing style.

Language: Tamil & Hindi (with subtitles in selected theatres)

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 174 Minutes

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s idea to make an universe out of his films expands with Vikram. The movie begins where Kaithi ends. Two containers full of costly drugs go missing. the local Pablo Escobar, Santhanam (Vijay) is hell bent on finding it. Amid this is a group of masked killers killing people who have something in common. The police hire a shadow gang to find them out and the drama unfolds.

Vikram Movie Review: Script Analysis

Of course there are flaws, but one has to give writer director Lokesh Kanagaraj the due credits for being one of the most experimental filmmakers while staying true to his roots. Back to back actions sagas including Master , but all different from each other. Call it cherry on the cake, he gets to direct his ideal Kamal Haasan this time and he writes an unapologetic love letter to him with the film.

There is style, unimaginable action sequences, emotions, mysteries, suspense and all of this performed by some of the most talented actors Indian houses right now. I know every review will write at length about the massy appeal of the story and how Lokesh excels in giving yet another Tarantinoish saga but with a new soul. But what is actually to be praised here is the filmmaker marrying commercial elements to content based structure.

For example, look how he structures the film. Kamal Haasan has the mass appeal and even a glimpse of his eyes in the opening sequence had the entire hall roaring (a 7:00 am show was houseful). So in the first half where you are fresh and all attentive, he makes his selling point a mystery, and lets the other two amazing actors Fahadh and Vijay solve him. It’s almost like Kanagaraj understands the biggest risk of hiring three massive stars and makes a conscious effort to make them all shine. Such a treat.

The second half is where the filmmaker unleashes his Lion. Kamal Haasan takes over and the rest two kind of take the back seat. Remember I called it a love letter to the Ulaga Nayagan? You can see it here. The narrative entirely worships Haasan as he goes back to Vikram after decades and takes over from the filmmaker’s Kaithi. It is such an amazing way to create indulging and personal cinema.

The script does falter a bit when it loses its grip in between the multiple action sequences and you want them to end soon. The women still continue to be the oppressed gender in Kanagaraj’s world. There is one who rises above and shine, I will take that as a small step in the right direction.

Vikram Movie Review: Star Performance

Do I even need to elaborate how prolific the cast is, aren’t the names enough? Kamal Haasan is back in action after a very rough patch and it only makes me happy that the actor accepts his age on screen. He still has the panache to beat 100 men single handed and you won’t even question.

Fahadh Faasil gets to play the most interesting part as he transforms with the movie. There is a journey to his submission to the lawless justice and when you have an actor of Faasil’s calibre it only becomes hauntingly beautiful. He plays an undercover officer who is ruthless but with a frame that might not intimidated a child maybe. And that’s where the real power lies.

Vijay Sethupathi can play a table and you will pay to watch him do it. The man plays a baddie yet again and brings so much to a character that could also have been caricatured. Don’t want to spoil anything for you. Witness it yourself.

Vikram Movie Review: Direction, Music

Lokesh Kanagaraj deserves all the appreciation coming his way. He creates a spectacle from every dimension and make sure his world looks real and you surrender to his vision. The best part is how he treats all his characters as the heroes of their parts and even Arjun Das in a brief appearance gets a warm welcome.

Anirudh Ravicahnder only knows how to outdo himself. The music hooks you and doesn’t leave. So does the cinematography by Girish Gangadharan. I am living for his Arial shots.

Vikram Movie Review: The Last Word

Vikram is a mass entertainer that does not alienate the ones who try to find meat in a film. There is enough to attract you to the theatres and it is all worth. Go book your tickets.

'Vikram Vedha' review: Hrithik Roshan comes in all guns blazing in this action drama

The star makes for a formidable antagonist in this bollywood remake of a tamil film.

Aarti Jhurani author image

It may be a remake, but Pushkar and Gayatri's testosterone-fuelled action film Vikram Vedha can stand on its own two feet, thanks in large part to Hrithik Roshan's engaging performance.

Directors: Gayatri, Pushkar

Stars: Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte

Rating:  3.5/5

The story takes inspiration from the ancient Indian legend of Vikram and Betaal, in which King Vikramaditya faces off against the demon Betaal, who outwits him again and again by entangling him in tales that end in riddles.

Vikram, played by Saif Ali Khan, is a virtuous police officer on the hunt for notorious gangster Vedha (Roshan). Caught up in a game of cat and mouse, each time Vikram gets close to nabbing his target, Vedha offers to tell him stories, which play out as flashbacks of his life.

To further complicate the storyline, Vikram's wife Priya (Radhika Apte) is Vedha's lawyer, which causes a high level of tension in several scenes.

But the film is not the simple battle between good and evil that the trailer would have you believe — there is more to it than meets the eye, and some of the best scenes are those in which the two lead characters face off over questions of morality, justice and the meaning of right and wrong.

The high-octane, occasionally gory drama is fast-paced, offering several twists and turns, and the stylistic slow-motion action scenes are done well, without veering into the monotonous.

The main track, Bande, plays intermittently throughout the film, adding the right amount of grunge and grit to the action scenes. The only dance number, added in an effort to “Bollywood-ise” the film, feels quite out of place and tips into the cringeworthy.

This Bollywood remake stays fairly faithful to the 2017 Tamil film starring R Madhavan as Vikram and Vijay Sethupathi as Vedha. It's almost a shot-for-shot remake — a safe move, given that the south Indian film did very well at the box office. Despite that, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Roshan makes for a formidable antagonist in all his dishevelled glory, playing Vedha infinitely better than Sethupathi. He portrays the character with a swagger so impressive you cannot help but root for him.

Khan, on the other hand, pales in comparison to Madhavan's rendition of the character. Even if you see the Hindi film without watching the original, there is a sense of deja vu, as Khan played a similar role in the Netflix series Sacred Games .

Abu Dhabi stands in for Lucknow in the film. Twofour54's backlot in the Khalifa Industrial Zone was set up as the historical Indian city, and Al Wathba Wetland Reserve makes an appearance in a few scenes as well.

Whether or not you've seen the original, Vikram Vedha is certainly worth going to the cinema for, even if it's only to see Roshan in one of the best roles he has played in a while.

Vikram Vedha is in cinemas across the UAE on Friday.

South Indian Crime Thrillers on OTT: Kantara, Drishyam & More

By Aditi Rathi

There is indeed a separate fanbase for South Indian crime thrillers . Whether made on a heavy or a small budget, several content-driven movies have become massively successful at the box office. With brilliant writing and scenes that leave the audience on the edge of their seats, these films are still enjoyed by many. From Kantara and Drishyam to the KGF film franchise , the list of many South Indian crime thrillers on OTT is below:

The 2022 Kannada movie Kantara became a pan-India hit overnight. Made on a budget of about $1.9 million, the film is the second highest-grossing Kannada movie ever. Rishab Shetty starred in the film and also directed and co-wrote it. It is, to date, one of the most lauded and unique South Indian crime thrillers.

Kantara follows the story of a tribal community, their rights, beliefs, and troubles with the state. The movie’s official synopsis reads, “A fiery young man clashes with an unflinching forest officer in a south Indian village where spirituality, fate, and folklore rule the lands.”

The film received positive reviews and a lot of praise. Its prequel, Kantara: Part 1, is currently being made. The film’s Hindi and English versions are available to stream on Netflix, and its Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil versions are on Amazon Prime Video.

The 2013 Malayalam film Drishyam was critically acclaimed. The Mohanlal starrer is undoubtedly one of the most loved South Indian crime thrillers of all time. Written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, the movie has been recreated in several languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Mandarin.

The movie follows the story of George Kutty, who leads a happy life with his wife and daughters. However, his peaceful abode is disrupted when a boy troubles his adopted daughter.

The movie’s unexpected twists and turns due to an accidental crime intrigue the audience. As it is still one of the most beloved movies for crime thriller enthusiasts, it is available on DisneyPlus Hotstar and YouTube.

KGF: Chapter 1

KGF: Chapter 1 changed the dynamic of Kannada cinema in 2018. Written and directed by Prashanth Neel, the movie’s overnight success was commendable. Yash, who played the lead role of Rocky, also became a pan-India star with the movie’s release.

The movie’s story is set against the backdrop of Kolar Gold Fields, a brutal place situated in South India. It also explores the gangster culture of India in the 1970s.

With its massive action and crime with a hint of drama and emotion, the film received positive remarks from both the audience and critics. It is currently available to watch on DisneyPlus Hotstar.

KGF: Chapter 2

The Yash-starrer’s sequel KGF: Chapter 2 began from where the previous movie left off. It welcomed more celebrated actors, including Bollywood stars Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon, who played crucial roles.

As the film franchise expanded with the 2022 movie, it became even bigger and the highest-grossing Kannada movie of all time. The film is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video in multiple languages.

Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire

Prashanth Neel’s latest creation, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, was among the most successful movies of 2023. Starring Prabhas in the lead role, the film also saw an ensemble cast, including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Jagapathi Babu. The film was produced with a substantial budget, and a sequel is currently in development.

Its official synopsis reads, “The fate of a violently contested kingdom hangs  on  the fraught bond between two friends-turned-foes in this saga of power, bloodshed and betrayal.”

The movie’s Hindi version is available on DisneyPlus Hotstar. On the other hand, it is available to stream in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and English on Netflix.

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan’s 2022 film Vikram is among the highest-grossing movies in Tamil cinema. Helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the movie follows a murder investigation that leads to a web of crimes by a drug cartel. It also stars Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi in crucial roles.

The celebrated movie is available to stream on DisneyPlus Hotstar.

In conclusion, there is a plethora of star-studded South Indian crime thrillers on various OTT platforms. They can make a perfect watch for weekends.

Manoj Bajpayee Guns for Action Hero Status in ‘Bhaiyya Ji’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Manoj Bajpayee Bhaiyya Ji

Manoj Bajpayee , known as one of India’s finest actors, is adopting a mass-market action hero persona in upcoming film “ Bhaiyya Ji .”

The story, where Bajpayee’s character faces off against a powerful man and his henchmen to seek revenge for wrongs done to his family, is literally ripped from the headlines. The actor read the real-life story in a newspaper several years ago and it stayed with him.

Popular on Variety

The genre Karki is referring to, which celebrates male-centric heroism and is replete with stylized action and heightened emotion, is something that India’s southern film industries churn out to large box office numbers with monotonous regularity. However, the genre is something Bollywood appeared to have lost the art of making successfully until southern Indian filmmaker Atlee brought it back to the industry with Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Jawan,” which became the biggest hit of 2023.

Karki requested Bajpayee for the story rights and the actor “very reluctantly” agreed because he was sure that as an independent film it would both convey a message and also be engaging to audiences. Karki, who was convinced that the story lent itself to a mass entertainer, then sprang a surprise when he asked Bajpayee to play the lead.

Bajpayee, who has won best actor prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards twice, for “Bhonsle” and “Aligarh” and acting honors at India’s National Film Awards three times, for “Bhonsle,” “Pinjar” and “Satya,” found his popularity enhanced even further with Prime Video series “The Family Man.” In the hit show, Season 3 of which is filming now, Bajpayee portrays a middle-class Mumbai-based salaryman who is secretly an intelligence officer.

The challenges were of a different nature in “Bhaiyya Ji.” The physical demands aside, “Bhaiyya Ji” meant a complete mindset change for Bajpayee. The film is set in India’s northern heartlands, where Bajpayee hails from, but the comfort ended there. “I realized that it’s better not to go internal with this one. Because if you internalize, you may ruin the whole purpose of entertainment. Because more than storytelling, the entertainment factor has to be analyzed and then executed,” Bajpayee said.

“When you are doing independent film, middle-of-the road cinema, you really immerse yourself into the character. You get into the skin of it, because you are your path, that there is a story there’s a very strong characterization, which is in accordance with the script and the flow. But here, I realized that I can get the character into me. But still, I should be able to go out of the character and do those action sequences, knowing that there are a few things that I’ll be doing, which will not be according to the character, but if I have to pull it off, I have to believe in it. I have to be convinced about it,” Bajpayee added. “It was a tough game.”

It helped Bajpayee that playing the antagonist is veteran actor Suvinder Vicky, known for Cannes title “The Fourth Direction,” Venice selection “Milestone” and, more recently, hit Netflix series “Kohrra.” Bajpayee says that it took them just three shooting days to get to the pitch of the genre.

“It demands a different kind of preparation and process. Both of us could relate to each other and our struggle to make the scenes look real and still be larger-than-life,” Bajpayee said, adding that extra rehearsals and discussions helped to overcome the challenge.

Written by Karki and Deepak Kingrani, the film is a Vinod Bhanushali, Samiksha Shael Oswal and Shabana Raza Bajpayee presentation of a Bhanushali Studios Limited, SSO Productions and Aurega Studios production. Producers include Vinod Bhanushali, Kamlesh Bhanushali, Samiksha Oswal, Shael Oswal, Shabana Raza Bajpayee and Vikram Khakhar.

“Bhaiyya Ji” releases theatrically on May 24.
