Longshang Books Cafe / atelier mearc - Shelving

Text description provided by the architects. Chemical Bookstore was located on Meilong Rd, Shanghai . It was a typical old-style bookstore. What you saw is just as simple as bookshelves, everywhere full of books and several aisles. Books, people reading books and purchasing behavior constituted the space.

Longshang Books Cafe / atelier mearc - Shelving

Regarding to the space shape and its content, it could be the most straightforward ‘bookstore’ that is so familiar with people. This point later is used as design method of the new bookstore, Longshang Books Café. After investigating on ‘in what shape would the bookshelf be’, we found that a straight, parallel arrangement of bookshelf provides most route options possible. Unlike the original Chemical Bookstore , lined aisles are naturally formed by bookshelves, they also provides flexible moving directions.

The space combines bookstore, coffee and salon, these functions are differentiated but interacts with the other two. Therefore, a kind of ‘arch wall’ is applied. The element has been adopted in spacious salon area and bookshelf structures. Especially in the latter experience, sitting in the ‘arch wall’ reading, or browsing along the bookshelf backside becomes an interesting examination of these delicate correlation with people and environment.

Longshang Books Cafe / atelier mearc - Image 15 of 23

The next step is to find the proper structure to support the bookshelf. Later when everything else is ready, the ‘arch’ arises after connecting with the bookshelves. The arch vault fits together with the support structure into one piece. Given all the elements of an ideal bookstore: bookshelf, ‘arch wall’, supporting structure, arch. Located on Meilong road, how will it make contact with the environment?

Longshang Books Cafe / atelier mearc - Shelving, Table, Chair, Windows

Meilong road is an east-west street in southwest Shanghai . It runs through several old residential buildings. On Meilong road, to the east of Longshang Books Café is East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), and to the west lies 600 meter long metasequoia strip.

Longshang Books Cafe / atelier mearc - Windows, Facade

For better understanding of the new bookstore, original facade is completely changed. One entry door and one large scale window helps to draw more natural light inside. This decision was made after careful and positive examination on how much light should the ideal bookstore needs being replaced. There are 3 ‘windows’. ‘Window 1’ is the entry door, from where the indoor circulation begins. ‘Window 2’ stands on the same exterior facade where the circulation ends. It also leads lower light in. ‘Window 3’ connects coffee bar and the book area, through which an Osmanthus tree and campus of ECUST could be seen.

Longshang Books Cafe / atelier mearc - Shelving

All bookshelves indoor are made of steel panel. Meanwhile, the curtain wall of exterior facade applies the same steel panel. Sharing the remarkable consistency, the facade acts as the corresponding point of indoor and outdoor. In consideration of using the most basic, familiar material, besides the stainless steel panel, wood is commonly used as well. In combination of familiar material and unfamiliar structure, the feeling of space scale gets vague.

There are 20,000 books and 24 coffee seats In this 188 m 2 space newly rebuilt

Home design combines the essence of architecture and art, and designers do their best to find the new ways in the various contradictions and conflicts to perfectly express their understanding of space and the owners' initial imagination. At the same time, each case built always contains many certain or uncertain factors that refer to the furnishings or even space composition. Each of these factors seems to tell a never ending story and records people's feeling of excitement, confusion, recalling and longing. It is precisely because of these vivid emotional experiences that make home design to be charming and attractive. In order to illustrate the essence of each case in a more accurate way, this book has systematically deconstructed every aspect of the home design that refers to space, structure, interface, decoration as well as special areas. Each of the case is illustrated detailedly from the point of functional area, besides, descriptive text and the corresponding plan vividly recur the transformation from plane to space, from the abstract to the intuition. Reading along the layout of the book, readers not only find inspiration from the cases, but also would experience the peculiarity of the home design and enjoy the tactile sensation of the textured space.

CASE STUDY, by Graeme Macrae Burnet

To get to Primrose Hill from central London, you take the Tube to Chalk Farm Station, exit to your right toward a cafe and an off-license, and climb a path to an overpass above train tracks. The path is called, rather unassumingly, Bridge Approach, and a five-minute walk leads to Primrose Hill. I happened to live in these parts for three years, and I crossed the overpass twice a day most days. Just to the south is the Pembroke Castle pub, where Liam Gallagher of Oasis was once arrested, in 1998. Another neighborhood tippler, Kingsley Amis, favored the Queen’s at the corner of St. George’s Terrace, according to his biographer Zachary Leader, who printed his monthly tab. From my balcony I could see the phone box where Sylvia Plath would desperately call Ted Hughes at his lover’s flat in her last days. It is a quiet neighborhood, but one dense with intrigue and peopled by famous, messy and tortured artistic personages.

The events of Graeme Macrae Burnet’s fourth novel, “Case Study,” are set off by a suicide in the 1960s by a young woman named Veronica, who jumps from the Bridge Approach overpass and is struck by the 4:45 train to High Barnet. (I am not sure that High Barnet trains, rather than Edgware-bound ones, run on this track, nor that the overpass itself, rather than just the path that approaches it, is called Bridge Approach, but these are the sorts of possible slight inaccuracies that Burnet and his not entirely reliable narrators relish.) An investigation into Veronica’s death and the man who might have been responsible for it — her therapist, Arthur Collins Braithwaite, whose office is on Primrose Hill — forms the substance of the narrative. Like Burnet’s previous novel, “ His Bloody Project ” (2016), “Case Study” was nominated for the Booker Prize and consists largely of purportedly found documents.

The would-be Miss Marple of Burnet’s loopy detective story is Veronica’s unnamed younger sister, who, under the alias Rebecca Smyth, becomes Braithwaite’s patient to find out if he drove Veronica to take her own life. Rebecca details her five sessions in notebooks that decades later end up in the hands of a writer named GMB, our frame narrator, who is researching Braithwaite for a potential biography. Now cast into obscurity, the (fictional) therapist was once a figure of note, appearing on BBC chat shows and publishing the books “Untherapy,” a best seller, and “Kill Your Self,” which Rebecca calls “a jumble of incomprehensible sentences, each having no discernible relationship to its neighbors.” Still, we are told by GMB, “Kill Your Self” “captured the zeitgeist,” acquired for its author a cult following from which he drew a lucrative pool of patients, and “if anything, the impenetrability of certain passages only served to confirm the author’s genius.”

“Case Study” consists of a preface, in which GMB explains how he received the notebooks (from Rebecca’s cousin, who noticed a blog post by GMB on Braithwaite); the five notebooks themselves, one of which includes a chapter clipped from “Untherapy” about a patient who is clearly Veronica; five biographical chapters about Braithwaite by GMB, inserted between the notebooks; and a postscript, in which GMB ventures south to pay a visit to the Pembroke Castle. The elegant nested structure is one of the novel’s chief appeals. So is the contrast between Rebecca’s narrative voice, characterized by what GMB calls “a certain kooky élan,” and the cool tone of GMB’s Life of Braithwaite. What emerges is a comedy of identities tried on and discarded. Given the number of suicides that mark the story, it’s a comedy with dark underpinnings.

Rebecca lives with her father, a retired engineer, and their housekeeper, and works as a receptionist for a talent agent. Her mother died when she was 15, falling off a cliff before her eyes, during a family holiday in Devon. Given that Rebecca is the only witness to the fall, and that she admits to fantasizing about pushing someone off the cliff the sentence before recounting her mother’s death, we can’t help suspecting that she might have done it herself. But we have no more reason to doubt it than the rest of her story, and that’s part of the fun: The whole tale might be a hoax.

Unlike Veronica, who was a doctoral student in mathematics at Cambridge, Rebecca is not very ambitious. She’s an erstwhile fiction writer, having given up on writing after the one story she published in Women’s Journal didn’t have editors banging down the door for more. She is a homebody, happy to tend to her father and not be a “Modern Independent Woman.” She attests to being a virgin, and so becoming Rebecca Smyth means becoming someone else: the sort of woman who puts on lipstick, attends glamorous parties and drinks gin with gentlemen at the Pembridge Castle (as she calls the Pembroke Castle). Since she is not really that sort of woman, drinking even a little gin causes her to vomit in the bathroom the first time she tries it.

Braithwaite is also someone who puts on new identities, but at the same time he’s a recognizable English type: the humble boy from northern England who goes down to Oxford after the war and reinvents himself as a kind of romantic rogue. “Case Study” has a lot in common with the novels of Vladimir Nabokov and Roberto Bolaño, in which invented characters pass through tumultuous episodes of literary history that never quite happened, though it seems as if they should have. Braithwaite brushes against real-life figures, engaging in hostile correspondence with the psychiatrist R.D. Laing and becoming a confidant of the actor Dirk Bogarde. After an overblown scandal consumes his therapeutic practice and sets him off on a bender, he winds up back at the home of his father (another suicide) in the North, where he writes his unpublished memoir, “My Self and Other Strangers.” It is the source, we are told, of GMB’s biographical reconstructions.

“Case Study” is a diverting novel, overflowing with clever plays on and inversions of tropes of English intellectual and social life during the postwar decades. As such, it is not exactly an excursion into undiscovered literary terrain. Reading Burnet’s doubly mediated metafiction of North London neurotics and decadents, I often longed to turn back to the shelf for the real thing: fictions by Doris Lessing, Kingsley and Martin Amis, Muriel Spark, Jenny Diski, Julian Barnes, Alan Hollinghurst, Zadie Smith or Rachel Cusk; biographies of Plath and Hughes; films of kitchen-sink realism starring Bogarde and Laurence Harvey, with scripts by Harold Pinter; or even the documentaries of Adam Curtis, in which Laing often makes a cameo. It’s a compliment to put “Case Study” in that company and no insult to say that Burnet must have done his homework to get there. I imagine he lives in a flat full of piles of yellowing copies of The Times Literary Supplement, every issue a catalog of obscurities from across time. Humble children from the provinces who want to reinvent themselves have to get the stuff of their daydreams from somewhere.

Christian Lorentzen’s work has appeared in The London Review of Books, Bookforum and Harper’s Magazine.

“From Coffee to Books: The Evolution of Library Cafes”

Library cafe has become a ubiquitous feature in modern libraries, offering patrons a place to grab a cup of coffee or a snack while studying, working, or simply relaxing. These Library café in Dubai have become so commonplace that it’s hard to imagine a library without one, but this was not always the case. In this blog, we’ll explore the evolution of library cafes, from their humble beginnings as a coffee pot in the corner to the full-service cafes we know today.

Library cafes are cafes located within a library facility that offer refreshments and food items to library patrons. These cafes typically offer a variety of coffee drinks, teas, snacks, and light meals. Library cafes can provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for patrons to relax, work, study, or socialize while enjoying a beverage or snack. They are often designed to complement the library’s overall aesthetic and provide a space that encourages interaction and community building. Library cafes have become increasingly popular in recent years as libraries seek to offer a wider range of services and amenities to their patrons.

As the popularity of coffee grew in the 1980s and 1990s, library cafes began to evolve. Many libraries began offering more robust coffee options, including espresso drinks and specialty blends. These cafes were often operated by outside vendors, with libraries leasing out space to local coffee shops or chains like Starbucks. The library cafe became a destination in its own right, with patrons coming to the library specifically to enjoy a cup of coffee or a pastry.

In the 2000s, library cafes began to take on a new role. Libraries began to see these cafes as an opportunity to generate revenue and support their operations. Rather than leasing out space to outside vendors, many libraries began to operate their own cafes, selling coffee, snacks, and other refreshments to patrons. These cafes were often staffed by library employees, giving them an added sense of community and connection to the library.

Early Days of Library Cafes

The early days of library cafes were simple affairs. In the 1960s and 1970s, many libraries had coffee pots or vending machines in the corners of their reading rooms, offering patrons a quick caffeine boost during long study sessions. These early coffee stations were typically self-serve, with patrons brewing their own coffee and adding their own cream and sugar.

  • Library cafes were created to provide a space for people to enjoy coffee or other refreshments while studying or reading in the library. The idea is to create a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere in the library, making it a place where people want to spend time.
  • The introduction of library cafes has also been seen as a way to increase library use and attract more visitors. By providing a convenient place to grab a snack or a drink, libraries are able to offer a more comprehensive service to their patrons, and can even generate additional revenue to support library programs and services.
  • Library cafes also serve as a social hub for the community, providing a space where people can meet and connect over a shared love of books, coffee, and conversation. They often host events, book clubs, and other activities, further enhancing their role as a community gathering place.

Library Cafes Today

Today, library cafes have become a key part of the modern library experience. They offer patrons a comfortable place to study, work, and socialize, while also providing a much-needed revenue stream for libraries. Many library cafes have expanded beyond coffee and snacks, offering full-service menus that include sandwiches, salads, and other meals.

Despite their evolution, library cafes remain rooted in the same principles that have made libraries a cornerstone of our society for centuries. They provide a place for people to gather, learn, and connect, while also offering a much-needed respite from the outside world. Whether you’re a student cramming for finals, a parent looking for a quiet place to work, or simply someone in need of a good book and a cup of coffee, the library cafe is a place where everyone is welcome.

Benefits of Library Cafes

Library cafes offer a wide range of benefits to both libraries and their patrons. Here are some of the key advantages of library cafes:

  • Increased revenue: Library cafes provide a valuable source of revenue for libraries. By selling coffee, snacks, and other refreshments, libraries can generate income to help support their operations, fund new programs and initiatives, and maintain their collections.
  • Enhanced library experience: Library cafes provide a comfortable and inviting space for patrons to study, work, and socialize. They create a sense of community and encourage people to spend more time in the library, which can lead to increased engagement with library resources and services.
  • Convenient refreshments: Having a cafe on site makes it easy for patrons to grab a quick snack or beverage while they are at the library. This is particularly useful for students and researchers who may be spending long hours in the library and need sustenance to stay focused.
  • Improved accessibility: Best Library cafes can make libraries more accessible to a wider range of people, including those who may not be traditional library users. For example, parents with young children may find it easier to visit the library if there is a cafe where they can grab a snack for their kids.
  • Increased social interaction: Library cafes provide a social space where people can meet, collaborate, and connect with others. They encourage interaction and conversation, which can help build a sense of community and foster a love of learning.
  • Diversified services: Library cafes often offer a wider range of services than traditional libraries, including catering and event hosting. This allows libraries to expand their offerings and provide more value to their patrons.

Overall, library cafes are an excellent way for libraries to enhance their services and engage with their communities. They provide a comfortable, convenient, and welcoming space for patrons, while also generating revenue to support library operations.

Challenges of Library Cafes

While library cafes offer many benefits, they also come with some challenges, including:

Noise: The presence of a cafe in the library can sometimes create noise and distraction, which can be disruptive for those trying to study or read in the library. It is important to strike a balance between the noise levels of the cafe and the quiet environment that many library users expect.

Cost: Starting and maintaining a library cafe can be costly, including the expense of hiring staff, purchasing equipment, and stocking inventory. Libraries must consider the financial feasibility of adding a cafe to their facility.

Space limitations: Libraries may have limited space to accommodate a cafe, which may require reconfiguring the existing space or finding alternative solutions.

Competition: Library cafes may also face competition from nearby coffee shops and cafes, which could impact the viability of the cafe.

The Future of Library Cafes

The future of library cafes is likely to be shaped by evolving trends and priorities, but there are a few potential directions that they could take:

Greater emphasis on healthy options: As people become more health-conscious, library cafes may focus more on offering healthy food and drink options, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grain snacks.

  • Increased use of technology: Library cafes may incorporate more technology, such as self-serve kiosks or mobile ordering, to make the ordering process more efficient and convenient for customers.
  • More community events: Library cafes may host more community events, such as open mic nights, book clubs, and author talks, to create a more vibrant and engaging atmosphere.
  • Greater focus on sustainability: As sustainability becomes a more pressing concern, library cafes may adopt practices such as composting, recycling, and reducing waste to reduce their environmental impact.
  • Integration with other library services: Library cafes may become more closely integrated with other library services, such as offering a combined library card and cafe loyalty program or promoting library events and services through the cafe.

Yes, library cafes are a unique concept that combines the traditional function of a library with the modern trend of cafes. By offering a comfortable and inviting space for people to study, read, and socialize, library cafes are attracting new audiences and are providing a more comprehensive service to existing library patrons. One such gorgeous Library café in Dubai is Kefi Books and Coffeeshop . A cozy place with over 5000 books is an ideal place to relax and unwind, while you sip on your favorite mug of coffee or indulge in some tasty treats! Situated in Al Mamzar, Dubai, you definitely don’t want to miss out on this one.

Use these case studies as inspiration for your own cafe dreams or simply to get a behind-the-scenes look at some beautiful coffee spaces around the world.

Want to be featured in a future case study? Send us an email: [email protected].

The Details:

Nandan Coffee. Mumbai, India. Founded by the Mariwala family, 3rd generation coffee growers and roasters. As told by Yahvi Mariwala, co-owner with sister Parthivi Mariwala.

All photos courtesy of Nandan Coffee .

book cafe case study

We are third generation coffee growers and roasters! Nandan Coffee was started in the late 90s, growing and roasting specialty grade, organic coffee from our very own 40 acre estate in the Heart of the Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu, India.

Our estate & roastery has been certified organic since 2002 and we have won numerous awards for our flavor and quality. A specialty coffee far beyond its years in India, our company has been run by my grandparents and parents for over 3 decades, with my sister and I heading it since 2018. We’ve opened our very first café in October 2021 where we made the precise decision to use the Modbar – the very first in Mumbai and Second in India. Our café is located in the middle of a Bookstore – The White crow Books and Coffee – a special homage to our grandparents who loved to read, create and experiment.

We chose to use the Modbar to continue the transparency and lines of communication our customers have come to know us for over the decades. Nandan Customers have always known where there coffee comes from – and with the opening of our first café, we wanted to continue that tradition and allow them to know who makes their coffee as well. We wanted to create a space where customers feel included in the coffee brewing process, are intrigued by it – and are welcomed to ask questions and learn more! What better way to do this than the Modbar?

What made you want to open a cafe?

We always dreamt of opening a space where people can come together to not just grab a cup of coffee but immerse themselves in an experience. For us, a café is extremely special since we have been growing and roasting organic, specialty coffee at our Estate in Kodaikanal, TN (South India) for over twenty years! Opening our own café has allowed us to complete the final step to truly creating a farm to cup experience for our customers!

book cafe case study

How would you describe the brand of your cafe?

We want to make our customers fall in love with not just the coffee, but the process behind it. Our brand is extremely simple – we let the coffee and experience speak for itself.

book cafe case study

What equipment are you using to make coffee? Why did you choose this equipment?

For our espresso service we have a two Modbar espresso taps and a single Modbar steam tap accompanied by a  Mahlkoenig E65S GBW.

For manual brewing we have a Fellow Ode Grinder, an ROK Manual Espresso, Japanese Filter Pour Overs and the ever classic French Press.

Modbar’s are extremely unique in India, we have installed the second one in the country and the first in Mumbai – Our equipment was selected to have technology come in to remove the mundane and time consuming aspects of a barista’s job,  allowing for them to increase customer interaction.

It isn’t uncommon to see our regular customers or coffee curious newcomers behind our bar learning the tips and tricks of espresso making or manual brewing. For Nandan Customers, they have always known where their coffee comes from [ The Nandanvan Estate ], now they can see it being brewed and interact with the people brewing it!

book cafe case study

Describe your bar or customer flow. break this down for us. how did the equipment influence the flow? or vice versa?

The equipment and flow influenced each other. We have a 360 degree open bar counter of 300 square feet, which sits in the center of a 1500 square foot curated bookstore.

The Modbar is visible not only throughout the space but to passersby outside as well. When you first enter, it’s the first thing you see. Customers are able to place their order  and move freely throughout the space while watching the coffee creation process from any corner of the store due to the 300 degree open counter set up.

book cafe case study

Describe the location/demographics of the area where you opened. Why did you choose this area?

Our 300sq. ft coffee bar is a center island in a 1500 sq ft curated bookshop. We’re located in the most premium and sought after shopping Malls in the city with office space surrounding it.

Location was a strategic move to bring in people looking for an escape from the chaos of shopping or work. The bookstore has no doors allowing for a free movement of people (and aroma of coffee) to spread through the space.

What’s one thing that makes your cafe special?

Our commitment to quality coffee, transparency and customer service!

Unlike other coffee concept stores, the coffee bar isn’t pushed in a corner or isolated, rather it is the center of the space really inviting people into having a unique coffee experience!

Case Study on Café Coffee Day (CCD): Success Story

Varad Kitey

Varad Kitey , Akash Kushwaha

Café Coffee Day , popularly known as CCD, is not only a coffeehouse for the individuals of India but has become India’s favorite place for coffee and conversations today. Founded in 1996, the Bengaluru-based Indian multinational chain of coffeehouses has emerged to be one of the favorite haunts of the millennial and the Gen Z group within a concise time.

CCD had served over 1.6 billion cups of coffee annually in six countries when it discovered that it was on the brink of bankruptcy. This is why it decided to shut down its operations outside India. It was present in a list of countries — Austria, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Nepal, and Egypt prior to this decision.

The first Café Coffee Day outlet was set up by CCD owner V. G. Siddhartha on July 11, 1996, in Bangalore, Karnataka, with the slogan' A big deal can occur over some espresso'.

Café Coffee Day quickly extended through the urban areas in India, including new stores with more than 2000 bistros opened all over the nation by 2016. In a range of 20 years, CCD has blended its approach to progress, with the fame and cherish it has reaped.

Café Coffee Day Global Limited Company is a Chikkamagaluru-based business that produces coffee on its very own land of 20,000 acres. It is the biggest maker of arabica beans in Asia , sent out to different nations including the U.S., Europe, and Japan.

A Café Coffee Day outlet

V. G. Siddhartha began the Café chain in 1996 when he started Coffee Day Global, which is the parent of the Coffee Day chain. The first outlet was opened on July 11, 1996, in Bangalore, Karnataka.

Soon after the foundation of CCD Coffee, the biggest challenge faced by Café Coffee was to make a revolutionary change in Indian culture where the majority of the population preferred drinking tea rather than coffee.

CCD Founder - V. G. Siddhartha

CCD quickly extended to different urban cities in India, with more than 1000 bistros opened in the country by 2011. In 2010, it was declared that a consortium driven by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts would invest ₹10 billion in Coffee Day resorts which are owned by CCD. It was during the same time the brand changed its logo to the present logo that is used by the company to feature the chain as a spot or place to talk.

This was finished with real changes in the format of the stores, including the expansion of parlors and a complete redo of the interiors, and, above all, its slogan “A lot can happen over coffee.” The organization is vertically incorporated to cut expenses: from owning the plantations to becoming the coffee, preparing the espresso machines, and making the furniture for the outlets.

How CCD Started the Journey?

CCD started its journey with the incorporation of its parent Coffee Day Global Limited Company in 1996 by V.G. Siddhartha. It was on July 11, 1996, when the first CCD outlet was set up at Brigade Road, Bangalore, Karnataka.

Siddhartha did his Master's in Economics from Mangalore University and had an enthusiasm for innovation . VG Siddhartha dived deep into the stock market in his early career. He had worked for JM Financial and Investment Consultancy in Mumbai when he was just 24 years of age. Veerappa Gangaiah Siddhartha Hegde acted there as a Management Trainee/Intern in portfolio Management and Securities Trading on the Indian Stock Market under Vice-Chairman Mahendra Kampani.

However, after completing his 2 years of work anniversary with JM Financial Limited, VG Siddhartha had to return to Bangalore when he received the capital from his father to start a business of his choice.

VG Siddhartha started by buying a stock market card for Rs 30,000, and a company called Sivan Securities, which was later renamed Way2wealth Securities Ltd. The venture capital division of the company came to be known as Global Technology Ventures (GTV).

Siddhartha emerged as a full-time proprietary investor in the stock market in 1985. Furthermore, he also became the owner of 10,000 acres of coffee farms by then.

"When coffee trading was liberalised in the ’90s, I doubled the money I had invested in the plantations within a year," said VG Siddhartha.

It was then that the Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Ltd (ABCTCL), a company that focused on coffee exports, was born in 1993.

Siddhartha's plantations began to produce 3,000 tonnes of coffee, and with the help of ABCTCL, he traded over 20,000 tonnes. This way, in around two years, the company became the second-largest exporter from India.

As soon as its first coffee outlet or CCD store was set up on Bangalore’s crowded Brigade Road, it began to start a new journey.

The company soon expanded far and wide with its revolutionary concept, which allowed the millennials to sit and talk while sipping on their favorite beverage.

CCD is India's largest coffee chain to date and is owned by Coffee Day Global, a subsidiary of Coffee Day Enterprises.

CCD First Outlet opened in Bangalore in 1996

He was inspired by the proprietors of the "driving espresso brand in Germany, — Tchibo". This motivation gave Siddhartha a dream of an alternate world generally speaking and opened his eyes. It likewise gave a heavenly idea. With that thought, cup by cup he made his Billion dollar domain .

The company owned around 1,700 cafes, 48,000+ vending machines, 532 kiosks, and more than 403 ground coffee-selling outlets. The annual turnover of Coffee Day Enterprises was worth Rs 4,264 crore, as per a Moneycontrol report of 2019.

Mounting Debts and Controversies

Café Coffee Day had accumulated a total debt of around Rs 6,550 crore, as was reported in March 2019.

The coffee price hit a 13-year low in the international market, which also dragged the Indian prices when the Indian coffee exports too were down by 10 %. To combat this debt, Siddhartha had to sell his entire 20.32% stake in the Bengaluru-headquartered IT services firm, Mindtree to the engineering major, L&T for around Rs 3,200 crore. He was the largest shareholder in Mindtree and exited the company after remaining invested for close to two decades.

The mounting debts were just unsettling not only for the business but for Siddhartha as well. Even with the sale of his own stakes, going ahead turned out to be really tough because the working capital requirements could not be met.

All these led Siddhartha to strike a deal with the global beverage maker Coca-Cola for an equity sale in the flagship Café Coffee Day (CCD) at an enterprise valuation of around Rs 10,000 crore. Besides, Blackstone was also reportedly in talks with the company to buy a majority stake in the real estate venture of the founder, known as Tanglin Developments, for around Rs 2,800 crore.

VG Siddhartha slowly started to come under the radar of the Income Tax Department, which first raided the premises of the Café Coffee Day owner in September 2017. They discovered around Rs 650 crore of concealed income from the documents seized when they concluded the search and seize operations.

The income tax raids were also eventually conducted at 20+ locations, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Chikmagalur, by the senior officers of the Income Tax Department of Karnataka and Goa regions.

The Missing Founder of CCD and his Death

Siddhartha had been found missing since July 29, 2019, and this news of the missing MD was further confirmed by Coffee Day Enterprises.

Siddhartha had been found missing since July 29, 2019, and this news of the missing MD was further confirmed by Coffee Day Enterprises. Siddhartha had allegedly told his driver that he would be going for a walk near the bridge and asked him to wait at a distance on the 29th of July 2019. The driver lodged a missing complaint with the police after waiting for two long hours for his return. A fisher claimed that he saw someone jumping off the bridge, but it was only allegedly true until two days later when his body was found in the Nethravathi river backwaters.

The Café Coffee Day boss VG Siddhartha had supposedly left a letter where he expressed his unhappiness over not creating "the right profitable business". Besides, he also alleged that a senior income tax officer allegedly harassed him.

"I have failed to create the right profitable business model despite my best efforts. I would like to say I gave it my all. I am very sorry to let down all the people that put their trust in me. I fought for a long time, but today I gave up as I could not take any more pressure."
"I could not take any more pressure from one of the private equity partners forcing me to buy back shares, a transaction I had partially completed six months ago by borrowing a large sum of money from a friend. Tremendous pressure from other lenders led to me succumbing to the situation. There was a lot of harassment from the previous DG income tax in the form of attaching our shares on two separate occasions to block our Mindtree deal and then taking the position of our Coffee Day shares... This was very unfair and has led to a serious liquidity crunch," goes the last letter from the CCD chief.

In September 2019, the organization named reviewing firm Ernst and Young to examine their books of records. They also asked the inspector to investigate the conditions of the last letter composed by Siddhartha and the focus he put on it.

CCD Business Plan And Marketing

CCD has adopted a very effective business strategy, which is compartmentalized below.

Innovation and Expansion

The humongous amount of sustenance and refreshments made CCD possible. Besides, the ambitious moves of CCD and its rapid expansion into level 2 urban communities of India and other remote areas were some triumphant techniques that encouraged CCD to be on the fronts of its rivals like Starbucks and Barista .

Its different auxiliaries like Coffee Day Fresh 'n' Ground, Coffee Day Square, Coffee Day Resorts, Coffee Day Beverages, and so forth have helped the organization to satisfy the client's needs and stay ahead simultaneously.

Also, CCD’s regular involvement on Twitter , Facebook , and Instagram further engaged its customers. Café Coffee Day also brought in the character, Beano, to connect with the purchasers in 2016.

Strategy of Distribution

As of March 2020, there are 1,752 CCD outlets crosswise over 29 states of India. Café Coffee Day has likewise extended outside India with its outlets in Austria (Vienna), the Czech Republic, Dubai, Malaysia, and Cairo, Egypt. The Indian sorted-out division has the potential for around 5,000 bistros, yet less than 1,000 bistros exist, as of now.

Difference In Concoction

These are some prominent moves that made CCD stand out from its peers and rivals:

  • Past nourishment, the emphasis is on getting the experience right. CCD propelled its application to follow shopper conduct, customize offers and advancements, empower cashless exchanges through implicit wallets, and fabricate unwaveringly.
  • In 2016, CCD partnered with Freecharge to empower cashless exchanges at the outlets, where the clients could utilize their portable numbers to pay and finish the exchange in under 10 seconds. Be that as it may, Harminder Sahni, author, and MD Wazir Advisors, consider these as strategic contributions.
  • To further lift involvement, CCD started Café Concerts in 2016 with attention to live gigs in Mumbai , Delhi , Pune , and Bengaluru. Cafe concerts were unique at the time when it was introduced by CCD and played a big hand in hooking the young crowd.

The 3As Strategy

The chief components influencing rivalry in the espresso retail area include evaluating, item/administration quality, brand recognition, taste, and item assortment.

To separate itself from rivalry, CCD has manufactured its retail procedure on 3As:

Affordability — CCD ensures that it attracts every kind of customer — be it a school/college student or an office goer, at an affordable price.

Accessibility — The goal of the brand was to ensure that the cafes should be within arm's reach. CCD believes in serving people across the country by providing the same experience everywhere.

Acceptability — CCD ensures that consumers should buy and drink their product without compromising on taste. The strategy was to bring people together to relax and unwind. The company further encouraged its customers with its catchy tagline that says "Let us catch up on CCD" that every Indian must have heard at one point or another.

The Present Day CCD

Café Coffee Day reportedly shut down around 280 outlets in the wake of FY20 and with this, the company reported a total of 1480 outlets, as per the reports dated June 30, 2020.

The company had been trying to pare its debts with the sale of its non-core assets after the death of its founder. CCD has announced to repay its debts worth Rs 1644 crore to 13 of its lenders. This had been possible with the sale of its technology business park to Blackstone Group and Salarpuria Sattva at an enterprising value of Rs 2,700 crore. The company also sold its stakes to Mindtree and L & L&T previously.

The company's net debt was worth Rs 2,909.95 crore in the FY20 and as per the latest reports dated March 31, 2021, CDEL's net debt came down to Rs 1,731 crore.

It was during the same time that CDEL announced that it had appointed Justice Manjunath to "suggest and oversee actions", who will supervise the recovery of over Rs 3,535 crore, which was allegedly siphoned out of the company into Mysore Amalgamated Coffee Estates Limited (MACEL), which goes as a personal firm promoted by its late founder V G Siddhartha.

The last report said that the "Management of the Company is putting its best efforts to get back the company on track." It further added that "the debt levels have reduced significantly from the beginning of the financial year March 2021."

CDEL's net operational revenue was measured on a consolidated basis in FY21, which was valued at Rs. 853 crores against Rs. 2,522 crores in FY20.

The brand currently has a presence in the coffee, logistics, and hospitality segments. The coffee business of the company, which includes its popular café chain brand Café Coffee Day (CCD), contributed around 47% of its consolidated net revenue. The other remaining parts were a result of its logistics business and logistics, which accounted for 45% and 8% of the revenues.

CCD currently operates 572 cafes, which run in 165 cities, and 333 CCD Value Express kiosks. Furthermore, it also boasts of having 36,326+ vending machines to "dispense coffee in corporate workplaces and hotels under the brand".
