Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village (2023) Review

Hyped for more, but nothing too special.

Ridge Harripersad

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village

The Demon Slayer series continued to take on the theatrical stage with another film—which had much success with their first movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train . While the last film offered a deep display of a whole new arc between season two and the upcoming season three, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village almost felt like a cheap money grab from the ufotable studio and the other executives of the franchise.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village pretty much showed the entire tenth and eleventh episodes from season two, the Entertainment District arc . Eventually, it got to the first episode of the Swordsmith Village arc. Sure, a recap from last season was good, but this was just a straight copy of the episodes adapted to the big screen.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba To The Swordsmith Village 2023 Review 23030403

While I enjoyed the action scenes from the Entertainment District arc , I would have loved to see a better theatrical cut in a more condensed format. It was a lazy move because it also played the credits and commercial break animations in between episodes, and in the middle of episodes.

To The Swordsmith Village could have been more original and authentic if it had a great action montage of all the fights that happened in the Entertainment District, but no, the film decided to cover even the emotional backstory of the Upper Ranks demons who served as the antagonists for the season—sibling demons, Daki and Gyutaro. This flashback was a nice touch to the story upon a first viewing on TV, but did not serve as a better experience in a theatrical version.

“ To The Swordsmith Village could have been more original and authentic if it had a great action montage of all the fights that happened in the Entertainment District…”

As cute as Nezuko could be and the jokes were enjoyable from season two, the choice to straight copy the last two episodes of season two was uninspiring, especially to its last film release, Mugen Train . It took over an hour for the film to get to the new content! The only saving grace to the movie was the inclusion of the first episode of the Swordsmith Village arc, even though the first episode tease seemed like it was dragging out content for time too.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba To The Swordsmith Village 2023 Review 23030403 1

There were literally almost a hundred snapshots of the Infinity Castle where the Upper Ranks demons’ HQ was, and of the demon, Lord Akaza. I get it tried to add some kind of tension when the Upper Rank demons finally met up, but why do I need countless shots of one guy’s face, a weird version of the shifting staircases from the Harry Potter movies, and other demons’ faces.

Once I got through these nonsensical shots, I enjoyed the introduction of all the Upper Ranks demons because some of them looked like creepy creatures right out of Elden Ring . This scene and a few later scenes also revealed some major plot points that will impact the protagonist, Tanjiro Kamada, in future episodes. This was also another point to what sort of saved the film.

“… To the Swordsmith Village almost felt like a cheap money grab from the ufotable studio and the other executives of the franchise.”

The rest of the film/episode offered a wonderful look at the Swordsmith Village itself, along with more scenes involving Tanjiro, Nezuko and the Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji. It also had a small tease of the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito. Aside from this, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village was almost a waste of time. Even more so, the Swordsmith Village arc will be airing worldwide on Crunchyroll on April 9, 2023—pretty much a month away.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba To The Swordsmith Village 2023 Review 23030403 5

Japan had an earlier release date for To The Swordsmith Village , on February 3, 2023. While this was a hyped way to get fans back into the Demon Slayer series, I felt like they missed the mark with the timing of its release being so close to the Swordsmith Village arc airing on TV. If you want to see the action scenes from episodes ten and eleven of season two on the big screen, sure, this could be worth the audiences’ time.

I think To The Swordsmith Village would have worked better in the format of an Original Video Animation (OVA) instead, on Crunchyroll or Netflix , rather than a full theatrical release. Personally, I would just wait for the series to air in a month.

Movie Review

At the end of Demon Slayer ’s latest TV story arc, Tanjiro and his allies had just finished slaying a pair of demon siblings who collectively ranked as the 6 th most powerful demon in existence. That’s good news for Tanjiro, since he needed the blood of one such demon so that a researcher could study it and potentially cure Tanjiro’s sister, Nezuko, of her own demon nature.

But what’s not good news is that slaying any of the six most-powerful demons (collectively called the Upper Rank Six ) tends to draw the attention of the other top-ranked demons. After all, no one’s managed to kill one of them in more than a century. So now they’re really annoyed, and they’re heading out to put their diabolical response into motion.

Tanjiro, of course, knows nothing about this. How could he? He’s been in a coma for the last two months, ever since his injuries from his fight overcame his adrenaline. But now he’s up, and he’s ready to continue in his demon slaying.

The issue, however, is that he’s chipped his demon-slaying sword, and now he needs a new one. But swords with the power to slay demons don’t exactly grow on trees. And Tanjiro’s already broken one before, so his swordsmith isn’t willing to send him a new one. This time, he’ll need to visit the secret swordsmith village if he wants it.

When Tanjiro gets there, however, the swordsmith isn’t there, and he’ll need to wait for him to return. It’s just enough time for Tanjiro to begin looking for a “secret weapon” said to lie somewhere near the village.

Positive Elements

As we stated in our last review on the series, fighting demons isn’t for the faint of heart. Those who go up against these powerful supernatural beings are sure to be fighting for their lives. But instead of running away, these Demon Slayers seek out those battles, looking to rid the world of these evil creatures to protect everyone else. At the very least, we’re certainly not going to call slaying demons a negative thing (and more on the spiritual side of those demonic forces below).

In the original anime, Tanjiro’s quest begins when he finds his entire family slaughtered by demons and his younger sister turned into one. His goal is to find a way to turn her back. And ultimately, To the Swordsmith Village tells a tale of family. Not only do Tanjiro and Nezuko protect one another, but even two siblings-turned-demons are encouraged to look out for each other, because family is just that important.

Spiritual Elements

But here’s the thing: the demons in Demon Slayer aren’t what you might read about in the Bible. Sure, there are some superficial similarities: They’re evil and rejoice in suffering, for instance. But these beings also carry some traits that aren’t necessarily biblically accurate. For instance, people can become demons (and not just be possessed by them). Demons can also be killed via decapitation by some very special swords. And these beings each have a special power called a “Blood Demon Art,” supernatural abilities that revolve around blood magic.

Demons cause a lot of strife and pain in the world, and it causes characters to cry out in anger towards the gods they believe in. One character laments, “The gods are so cruel.” Another tells a god how she’ll “never pray to you again” if that deity allows someone to die. A boy yells to the gods that he’ll kill all of them … and Buddha. We also see Chachamaru, a spirit cat that acts as a messenger and transport mechanism.

One demon says that he “doesn’t regret becoming a demon” and would choose it every time. After his death, he arrives in a mist-filled landscape, wondering if he’s in hell. He walks into some nearby flames and vanishes. Other demons convene in an alternate dimension to discuss the slaying of another powerful demonic being.

Someone says, “No matter how many times I’m reborn, I’m going to be your little sister.” Someone’s magical attack turns into an elemental dragon. Nezuko uses her demonic fire-like ability to burn poison out of someone’s body.

Sexual Content

Previous installments of the overarching TV and movie Demon Slayer story have mostly avoided unnecessary sexual content throughout the series thus far. However, this latest addition will disappoint those hoping that this story maintains that status quo.

A woman is shown bathing in a hot spring. She rises from the water, and we see her rear. Her breasts are seen, only barely covered by her hair. Later, when she comes running down a hill, the camera intentionally focuses on her bouncing chest. Tanjiro panics, yelling for her to cover up before her breasts spill out.

We later see Tanjiro jump naked into the hot spring; his private parts strategically hidden from view by a passing crow. Elsewhere, when a woman whispers into Tanjiro’s ear, he gets a nosebleed—a popular anime trope that’s shorthand for a character’s excitement about seeing or hearing something sexual.

Additionally, one female demon’s shirt exposes quite a bit of that character’s breasts. One man has three wives.

Violent Content

There’s quite a lot of slaying in Demon Slayer . Characters lose blood by the bucketful. Someone gets stabbed through the chest. Another combatant gets stabbed through his throat with a blade, which is visible in his mouth. Someone has his fingers brutally broken by a demon, and he’s further kicked and punched around. A couple of hands get cut off. A man and woman are both stabbed in the head with a scythe. A demon holds severed limbs and a head in its hands, and one of the limbs has a nasty bite out of it. A man coughs up blood.

Demons also get injured, too. Some are decapitated. But demons can only be permanently dispatched when they’re decapitated by specific swords. So when, at other times, they have their heads or hands ripped apart or split, the wounded body parts reconsolidate after a couple moments. One demon’s head is ripped from his body, but his head grows arms and legs and walks away on all fours.

Children in the story aren’t immune from the violence either. We see the bodies of Tanjiro’s dead siblings. We also glimpse the body of a girl who was burned to death at the age of 13. She was burned to death because she refused to have sex with a samurai (as the 13-year-old girl was hired to work as a prostitute), stabbing him in the eye instead. A woman beats a child, and the same child is hit with rocks by passersby. The boy is sliced in his back with a katana.

Crude or Profane Language

We hear many uses of “d–n” and “crap.” There are two uses of “p-ss,” and people are additionally called a variety of rude names, such as “idiot” and “scumbag.” “H—” is used three times. God’s name is abused once.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Other negative elements.

If you expected another epic installment a la Mugen Train , you’ll likely be sorely disappointed with this story.

That’s because Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village isn’t really a movie—it’s both a recap and an early access preview. The whole thing takes us through episodes 10 and 11 of Demon Slayer ’s already-released second season before we get to watch the first, rather uneventful episode of Season 3. So for die-hard fans of the show, that’s a cash-grab that’s probably not worth your money.

The aforementioned full-length episodes 10 and 11 show us the bloody and violent battle that concludes the season, one that’s rife with supernatural elements and some intense scenes. The subsequent first episode of Season 4, then, may feel like a nice breather. But its strange injection of a busty woman whose breasts take up more screen time than her face will certainly make viewers feel uncomfortable all the same.

Ultimately, the Demon Slayer franchise offers some redemptive messages and consistently emphasizes the importance of family. But these certainly won’t make any of Swordsmith Village ’s issues any easier to swallow.

Positive Messages

Themes include family, friendship, teamwork, sacrifice, tragedy, humanity, perseverance, and determination.

Positive Role Models

Tanjiro displays determination and courage while facing off against powerful opponents and odds that are overwhelming. Tanjiro's goal is to keep fighting until the end in order to protect his sister and friends. The rest of the demon slayers have similar courageous attributes and attitudes and fight to protect their family and friends.

Diverse Representations

Japanese film set in a fictional Japan during the Taisho era (1912–1926). Cast presents as entirely Japanese. Demon Slayer Corps is made up of both male and female characters. In flashback scene exploring former lives of some demon characters, it is revealed that Gyutaro and Daki were considered a lower class in society and were outcasts from society and abandoned by their mother.

Violence & Scariness

Lots of fantasy violence (blood and gore, use of weapons, magic, fighting, dead bodies, dismemberment, decapitation, body horror, and cannibalism). Characters are slashed, stabbed, dismembered, and decapitated in brutal stylized fight scenes. Some demon characters are slowly decapitated in multiple scenes, the blade and lots of blood can be seen spraying out of the wound. One scene shows a character's eye getting slashed, while another character gets stabbed through the jaw with a sickle. The charred body of a girl who was set on fire is shown. Another flashback shows a humanoid demon eating and holding various chopped off limbs and even a head.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Some sexual references and partial nudity. A scene implies that prior to becoming a demon, a female character worked in a brothel while they were still human. One scene focuses on a female character's chest as she runs down a staircase. Another character quickly pulls her kimono closed and comments that her breasts were about to spill out of her clothing. A couple of hot spring scenes show men and the naked backside of a woman while bathing.

Parents need to know that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village is a dark fantasy anime movie based on the popular Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba manga and anime series created by Koyoharu Gotouge. The movie centers around a group of demon slayers who battle against two very powerful demons. Expect to see lots of fantasy violence (blood and gore, use of weapons, magic, fighting, dead bodies, dismemberment, decapitation, body horror, and cannibalism). Characters are slashed, stabbed, dismembered, and decapitated in brutal and very bloody stylized fight scenes. There are some sexual references and partial nudity. What's the story.

DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA – TO THE SWORDSMITH VILLAGE follows the story of Tanjiro Kamado (voiced by Zach Aguilar ), a young boy whose family was murdered by demons. Tanjiro has joined the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization dedicated to protecting humanity from demons. This film covers the finale of the previous season of the anime series, where Tanjiro and a group of slayers face off against two strong high-ranking demons. The film also serves as an introduction to the upcoming season of the series.

Is It Any Good?

This movie starts off exciting and action-packed, but too quickly grinds to a halt. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village is a follow-up to the anime TV series, and ultimately this "movie" is actually three anime episodes stitched together. It's executed messily, and feels like you're watching a film backward. The movie starts off with the exciting conclusion of the last TV season, and then ends with the first episode of the new season. Jumping right into the action and excitement of the last season's final battle still feels satisfying. However, once this sequence is over, the film comes to a screeching halt, switching over to exposition and buildup of the next season.

Another aspect that may disappoint fans is that there isn't a ton of new content to see here. The majority of the film consists of the last two episodes of the previous TV season, with only one of the three episodes that make up this film being anything new. That said, the art, animation, and choreography in the battle sequences are absolutely amazing. But, overall, this movie is best left to existing fans of the series. And even then, it's debatable if there's enough new content to warrant its existence.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about ways to cultivate hope in their lives even during difficult times. Hope in the face of adversity is a theme in this series. What does hope mean to you and why is it important?

Families can also talk about the graphic violence in this anime. How intense is it? How do depictions of animated violence compare to depictions of live-action violence?

Mugen Train is an average movie tossed into the middle of a sensationally beautiful and thoughtful anime. While Mugen Train is a highly entertaining movie with plenty of heart and action, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a great film.

Fabulous Animation!! Voice actors has nailed it. Direction is on another level. A wonderful theatrical experience! Those who say about 'recaps' should know its was announced already. And pace can't be blamed as it's the same as in manga. Kimetsu No Yaiba again slayed it. Excited to watch the rest of the episodes.

How to watch Demon Slayer in order

Don't be scared off by Demon Slayer, here's how to watch the show in the correct order

Demon Slayer season 3

With Demon Slayer's Hashira Training arc now here, it's a good a chance as any to recap the hit anime. For that, you'll need our guide on how to watch Demon Slayer in order.

Whether you're trying to watch Demon Slayer from start to finish for the first time or just need a refresher in preparation Demon Slayer season 4 , you're in the right place.

Below, we'll present the full release date order for Demon Slayer, as well as answer any burning questions you may have. That includes which version of Mugen Train you should watch, how many episodes there currently are, and all the latest on the Hashira Training arc. You can find out more about the latest episodes and release plans going forward with the Demon Slayer season 4 release schedule .

For more, check out our list of the best anime , best Netflix anime , and new anime you should be watching right now, as well as guides on how to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion in order and how to watch Pokemon in order .

Nezuko in Demon Slayer season 3

Demon Slayer currently consists of four seasons and three (skippable) movies. But that's not as intimidating as it sounds: Here's how you should watch Demon Slayer in order.

  • Demon Slayer season 1, AKA Unwavering Resolve arc  (episodes 1-26)
  • Demon Slayer season 2, part 1, AKA Mugen Train arc (episodes 27-33) or Mugen Train movie
  • Demon Slayer season 2, part 2, AKA Entertainment District arc (episodes 34-44)
  • Demon Slayer season 3, AKA Swordsmith Village Arc (episodes 45-55)
  • Demon Slayer season 4, AKA Hashira Training arc (episodes 56-TBC)

The first season, released in 2019, is 26 episodes long – and you should watch that from start to finish.

Here’s where it gets a little trickier to follow. A sequel to the first season was released as a film: Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. The wildly successful Demon Slayer movie was also adapted into a television arc as part of Demon Slayer season 2.

Sign up to the GamesRadar+ Newsletter

Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more

That 'Mugen Train' arc is seven episodes long and is then followed by 11 wholly original episodes in the 'Entertainment District' arc. In total, Demon Slayer season 2 is 18 episodes long.

To keep things simple, we recommend watching Demon Slayer season 1 and then picking either the Mugen Train feature film or the Mugen Train recap arc (episodes 27-33) to watch. From there, you can watch the Entertainment District arc (episodes 34-44) as normal.

A second Demon Slayer 'movie', To the Swordsmith Village, was released in 2023. It bundles together episodes 10 and 11 of the Entertainment District arc and the first episode of season 3, AKA the Swordsmith Village arc. This is now redundant. We recommend just jumping ahead to the proper TV episodes.

Speaking of, Demon Slayer season 3 - 11 episodes long - was released in 2023 and should be watched from beginning to end after Entertainment District.

A fourth season, titled Hashira Training, is now here. The 'To the Hashira' movie featured a sneak peek of the new season, but everything in that movie is part of the one-hour Demon Slayer season 4 premiere. So just watch that instead.

That’s all you really need to focus on. In our educated opinion, we would recommend watching the adapted-for-TV Mugen Train arc instead of the movie. Not only do you get extra scenes, but you also get a bonus episode (the 27th episode), which provides a little more backstory to one of Mugen Train’s most prominent characters.

Should I watch the Mugen Train, Swordsmith Village, and To the Hashira Training movies?

Rengoku in the Demon Slayer movie

It's completely your choice. Mugen Train is a full sequel to the first season and, unlike other anime tie-in movies, it’s canon. It also introduces various characters and story beats that are followed up on in Demon Slayer’s Entertainment District Arc.

It does feel a little pointless watching both the movie and the Mugen Train arc series, however. So make sure you pick one or the other.

To the Swordsmith Village and To The Hashira movies are completely skippable; move on to the full Swordsmith Village (season 3) and Hashira Training (season 4) arcs instead.

Can I skip any Demon Slayer episodes?

The Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji in Demon Slayer season 3

Anime can sometimes be packed with so-called 'filler' episodes, entries designed to kill time until the manga source material pumps out new issues for the TV show to adapt. That’s not really the case in Demon Slayer.

Some episodes can be a little slow, particularly in the middle third of the first season and the third season, but everything is worth watching. We’d only recommend skipping the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train arc if you’ve already seen the Mugen Train movie recently, as well as skipping To The Swordsmith Village movie and To The Hashira Training movies entirely as those events are covered in Demon Slayer seasons 3 and 4 respectively.

How many episodes of Demon Slayer are there?

Tanjiro in Demon Slayer season 3

There are currently 56 episodes of Demon Slayer .

A fourth season, the Hashira Training arc debuted in May 2024 and is expected to last for (maximum) 11 episodes.

For more from the world of anime, here are our guides to Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 and One-Punch Man season 3 .

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji”: Training Noises Intensify [Review]

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” is the first episode of the new season, and it’s already starting off with Tanjiro recuperating once more. However, there’s more to it than that. This is the start of a training arc, and if you think that there’s the usual halt in character exploration and development, then oh boy, you’re going to be in for a pleasant surprise.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji”: Details

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Hashira Training Arc NA key visual.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” is the first episode of the fourth season of this dark fantasy adventure and martial arts anime series. Said season comes on the heels of the previous season, which was the Swordsmith Village Arc . Meanwhile, said anime series as a whole is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Koyoharu Gotouge . Ufotable ( Fate/Zero , God Eater , Tales of Zestiria the X ) is the animation studio behind this anime. Crunchyroll is the company licensing this anime for its NA debut.

Shin’ya Shimomura and Takashi Suhara are the directors behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji”, with the both of them also doing the storyboard. As for the anime as a whole, Haruo Sotozaki  is still the director. Ufotable collectively claims credit for the writing. Akifumi Fujio , Masanori Miyake , and Yūma Takahashi are all producing. Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina composed the music you hear in the anime.

Speaking of music: the opening theme song for this season is “Mugen” (夢幻, lit. ’Dream’) by MY FIRST STORY and HYDE . Alas, we don’t know what the ending theme song is yet as of this writing.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” features the voices of Natsuki Hanae  ( Zach Aguilar  in English dub) as Tanjiro Kamado,  Akari Kitō  ( Abby Trott  in English dub) as Nezuko Kamado, Hiro Shimono ( Aleks Le in English dub) as Zenitsu Agatsuma, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka ( Bryce Papenbrook in English dub) as Inosuke Hashibira, Reina Ueda ( Brianna Knickerbocker in English dub) as Kanao Tsuyuri, and Nobuhiko Okamoto  ( Zeno Robinson  in English dub) as Genya Shinazugawa.

For the Hashira, we have Tomokazu Sugita ( Crispin Freeman in English dub) as Gyomei Himejima, Takahiro Sakurai ( Johnny Yong Bosch in English dub) as Giyu Tomioka, Tomokazu Seki ( Kaiji Tang in English dub) as Sanemi Shinazugawa, Kana Hanazawa  ( Kira Buckland  in English dub) as Mitsuri Kanroji, Kenichi Suzumura ( Erik Scott Kimerer in English dub) as Obanai Iguro, Kengo Kawanishi  ( Griffin Burns  in English dub) as Muichirō Tokitō, and Saori Hayami ( Erika Harlacher in English dub) as Shinobu Kocho. We even have Katsuyuki Konishi ( Ray Chase in English dub) as Tengen Uzui.

Other notable voice roles for this episode include Toshiyuki Morikawa ( Matthew Mercer in English dub) as Kagaya Ubuyashiki, Rina Satō ( Suzie Yeung in English dub) as Amane Ubuyashiki, and Maaya Sakamoto ( Laura Post in English dub) as Tamayo.

When and Where to Watch

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” made its airing and streaming (aka. simulcast) debut on May 12, 2024 . You can watch this episode only on Crunchyroll at the moment. As for the previous seasons of the anime (including the anime film), you can watch it on Crunchyroll , Hulu , or Netflix .

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji”: Synopsis

Alas, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is an ongoing anime series. In fact, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” is the pilot episode of the new season, and it just premiered three days ago as of this writing. Thus, you will all get the official synopsis from Crunchyroll…is what I would like to say, but alas, there’s a problem. This pilot episode has nothing but a blank space where the synopsis should be. Thus, you will all get the official synopsis of the anime as a whole instead, also from Crunchyroll. You can check out that synopsis below:

It is the Taisho Period in Japan. Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon. To make matters worse, his younger sister Nezuko, the sole survivor, has been transformed into a demon herself. Though devastated by this grim reality, Tanjiro resolves to become a “demon slayer” so that he can turn his sister back into a human, and kill the demon that massacred his family.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji”: The Good

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 "To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji" screenshot showing all the (remaining) Hashira assembled.

First off, I have to make it clear that I am a huge fan of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba . Have been since that first episode of the anime aired all the way back on April 6, 2019. You might have noticed that if you read any of my previous reviews and articles about this anime. Thus, I will freely admit that I am very heavily biased towards this anime. With that out of the way, let’s begin.

The story of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” is clearly the best part about it. Koyoharu Gotouge did a wonderful job with this part of the story. Basically, it’s a breather chapter after the dark fantasy action of the Swordsmith Village Arc . At the same time though, it’s also a good example of worldbuilding, as it fleshes out the world of this story more with this discussion among the Hashira. It even fits in character exploration with the Hashiras’ personalities. Combine all that with the comedy, and it’s everything you could ever want from a story, not just a shonen anime.

The animation also deserves much praise though. As in the previous seasons, Ufotable went all out with that animation. It’s on par with Black Butler in terms of animation quality. It’s feature-length anime film levels of quality in an anime series, even for the non-action bits. There’s no two ways about it; it’s just gorgeous.

Lastly, there’s the music. The power duo of Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina have done it again with a stunning soundtrack. The music is not only incredible, but it also fits each scene it plays in. Need I say more?

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji”: The Bad

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 "To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji" screenshot showing a worried Nezuko sitting on a bed.

Honestly, this episode has it all. It’s predominately drama and slice of life, but it also has a massive dose of action at the beginning. If you don’t like any of them, then I’m not sure what to say. Perhaps a calmer and more relaxing anime like My Dress-Up Darling , Astro Note , or Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF is more your speed?

Summary Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Hashira Training Arc Ep. 1 "To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji" is the first episode of the new season, and it's already starting off with Tanjiro recuperating once more. However, there's more to it than that. This is the start of a training arc, and if you think that there's the usual halt in character exploration and development, then oh boy, you're going to be in for a pleasant surprise.

'Demon Slayer' Sword Colors Explained: A Guide to the Many Nichirin Blades

Your definitive guide to what the colors represent and who wields each sword.

The Big Picture

  • In Demon Slayer , the Nichirin blades used by Demon Slayer Corps members are made from Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Crimson Ore collected from mountains that are bathed in sunlight all year round.
  • Each color of the Nichirin blades represents a different element or inspiration, as well as the personality and power of the demon slayer wielding it.
  • The different colors of the Nichirin blades have distinct characteristics and are associated with unique Breathing techniques.

Demon Slayer (or Kimetsu no Yaiba , in the Japanese original) is one of the most popular anime and manga franchises right now, especially with Season 4 debuting its highly-anticipated run . It follows Tanjiro Kamado, an insecure boy who pledges vengeance on demons after his entire family is killed by one. He does this by joining the Demon Slayer Corps, a group of sword-wielding individuals who fight demons as the creatures attack innocent people after sundown . Getting rid of a demon is no easy feat. The anime has incredibly skilled evil spirits who find creative ways of launching deadly attacks to make us desperate – from the traditional body snatching to limb-deteriorating bouncing balls. In the Demon Slayer universe, one of the few ways to kill a demon is by exposing them to sunlight. This is the reason why the swords used by demon slayers go through lengthy sun exposure during their manufacturing. But how are they made, anyway?

Demon Slayer

A family is attacked by demons and only two members survive - Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, who is turning into a demon slowly. Tanjiro sets out to become a demon slayer to avenge his family and cure his sister.

What Is a Nichirin Blade in ‘Demon Slayer’?

A Nichirin blade is the steel specially made for the swords that Demon Slayer Corps members use to kill demons. According to the Demon Slayer manga (which would be the “bible” of the anime series), the blade is made out of Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Crimson Ore, which are collected from the mountains. But the materials aren't collected from just any mountain. They are picked from mountains that stand above the clouds, meaning they are bathed in sunlight all year long , without interference from the rain or having sunlight blocked. The sword is made from a material that has absorbed sun, the one thing that can kill demons. Another distinct characteristic of the Nichirin blade is that they change colors once their owners pick them up for the first time. Each color represents a different element or inspiration, as well as the personalities and the type of power that each demon slayer holds, and you can find the difference between all of them below:

Black Nichirin Blade

The most mysterious sword color from Demon Slayer is the one Kanjiro wields. The black blade represents the Sun and is surrounded by prejudice and misconceptions , as historically every demon slayer who held it lived a short life. This could mean that Tanjiro is destined to break the pattern and set a new legend for black Nichirin blades in the Demon Slayer universe. Also, black is frequently perceived as the absorption of all colors, which might mean that Tanjiro is set to navigate through sword colors and Breathing — which is a demon slayer technique that allows them to hone in the power that they hold within themselves to the sword.

Gray Nichirin Blade

The wielder of the gray Nichirin blade is the one who breaks the pattern and shows that the Nichirin doesn’t necessarily have to be used as a sword. Gyomei Himejima has the gray blade that represents the Stone and, instead of having a sword, he uses an ax attached to a chain . Curiously, Gyomei’s personality is the opposite of what the Stone represents: he’s calm and compassionate, and is constantly crying — even though he’s one of the strongest demon slayers.

Indigo-gray Nichirin Blade

The indigo-gray sword represents Beasts, and, appropriately, its holder in the anime wears a giant hog head as a helmet in order to hide his face. Inosuke Hasibira also uses two swords at the same time, and both of them have the potential to not only kill a demon but make a messy job out of it: the swords are built with jagged edges which resemble a predator’s teeth.

Red Nichirin Blade

Red often means intensity, and in Demon Slayer this is no different. The red sword represents Flame and Kyojuro Rengoku’s excentric and expansive personality translates that. The fire Breathing allows for some incredible visuals, including the Dance of the Fire God, which became one of the anime’s most famous scenes yet (beware of spoilers for Season 1 in the link).

Amber Nichirin Blade

The amber blade represents Sound, and it is wielded by Tengen Uzui. The Sound Breathing uses noise to confuse adversaries, and the ones who use it have an extremely developed sense of hearing. Tengen also uses the blades with different weapons: his amber Nichirin blade is used in a set of kusarigama, which is a cleaver-like hand weapon.

Yellow Nichirin Blade

The yellow blades draw from Thunder , and in the manga and anime this ends up represented by Zenitsu Agatsuma, a boy who is scared of his own shadow, but, when put under extreme desperation, unleashes a sharp and fast personality who may cause mayhem through his sword blade.

Blue Nichirin Blade

One of the most prominent swords seen in Season 1 , the blue sword represents Water and its owner, Giyu Tomioka uses it in fluid movements that make him a skilled and formidable killer. The movements used for Giyu’s water Breathing resemble the ocean: a calm body of water that can be deadly under specific circumstances.

Pink Nichirin Blade

The pink blade represents Love, which may seem kind of abstract when put together with the other blades, but it has an explanation: the Love Breathing has a peculiar nature, and it was developed by the pink Nichirin blade wielder herself , Mitsuri Kanroki. She was inspired by the Flame Breathing after being trained by Kyojuro Rengoku. Her sword is also extremely peculiar; it’s thin and resembles a whip, and she’s the only one who can wield it properly.

What You Should Know Ahead of ‘Demon Slayer’s Hashira Training Arc

White nichirin blade.

The white in Demon Slayer sword colors represents the mist , which is embodied by Muichiro Tokito in the manga and anime series. The mist Breathing is frequently associated with a calm and distant personality, and Muichiro never lets emotions get in the way of his judgment. This sword color has techniques derived from wind Breathing.

Lavender Nichirin blade

This blade represents the Serpent , the reason why Obanai Iguro’s sword resembles the body of a snake. The Serpent Breathing is derived from Water Breathing and the techniques resemble the movements of the animal it represents.

Light Pink Nichirin Blade

Derived from Water Breathing, the light pink Nachirin blade represents the Flower , and it is used by Kanao Tsuyuri and Kanae Koucho, the sister demon slayers who developed their own shared Breathing.

Green Nichirin Blade

The Breathing that inspired many other techniques is represented by the green sword color. Wind is the element of the green Nichirin blade and Sanemi Shinazugawa is the one who wields it in Demon Slayer . His twisted personality made for a dangerous welcome when Tanjiro was transported to a very special place by the end of Season 1.

Purple Nichirin Blade

The purple blade represents the Moon, which is the exact opposite of the sword that Tanjiro uses . Not by chance, this is the sword that one of the main antagonists of the series so far, Kokushibo, wields. The Moon Breathing is an improved version of the Sun Breathing, which was enhanced by the use of some obscure techniques.

Demon Slayer Season 4's Netflix Release: When Will It Start Streaming?

Demon Slayer character, Netflix N logo

Demon Slayer Season 4 is underway, but many are wondering when the new episodes will be available to stream on Netflix .

Season 4 of Demon Slayer premiered on May 12 , beginning the TV adaptation of the Hashira Training arc from the manga.

While the new season is expected to air weekly throughout the summer, U.S. audience members who don't subscribe to Crunchyroll are out of luck.

This leaves its streaming release on Netflix one of the most accessible ways to watch the new Demon Slayer season eventually.

When Will Demon Slayer Season 4 Stream on Netflix?

Demon Slayer Season 4 girl

Seasons 1-3 of Demon Slayer are available to stream on Netflix. However, the gap between airing live/streaming on Crunchyroll to the entire season streaming on Netflix has been inconsistent.

While this makes it more difficult to precisely predict the Demon Slayer Season 4 Netflix release, there is still plenty to reference.

Demon Slayer Season 3, which aired from April 9 to June 18, 2023, made its Netflix debut 102 days later on September 28, 2023.

However, it is worth noting that Season 2 deviated from this pattern, as it did not arrive on Netflix until January 21, 2023, a significant 342 days after the finale aired on February 13, 2022.

This discrepancy makes it more challenging to pinpoint a definitive prediction for Season 4's Netflix release date. Nonetheless, given Season 3's recency, it appears that the window of time for Season 4's Netflix debut is more likely to align with that timeline.

Season 4 premiered on May 12, and assuming a weekly episode release schedule, the season is expected to conclude on July 21 if the season runs 11 episodes long.

If Season 4 follows its predecessor's pattern, it could hit Netflix in late October or early November 2024, roughly 100 days after its projected finale.

Demon Slayer Season 4 Episode 1 Recap

While the demon activity seems to have ceased after the events of the previous season, a nighttime mission by Obanai and Sanemi reveals that some demons remain active.

Episode 1 introduces the Serpent and Wind Hashira as they embark on a rescue mission, encountering a pack of demons in a crumbling castle.

The story hints at Muzan's Infinity Castle, a secret hideout, foreshadowing the inevitable final battle. Meanwhile, the Hashira convene to discuss the resurgence of the Demon Slayer Mark, a rare power-up crucial for defeating powerful demons like Muzan.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the episode maintains a light-hearted tone, with familiar comedic interactions among Tanjiro and his friends.

The return of a character like Lady Tamayo adds intrigue, as she receives an invitation to assist the Demon Slayer Corps in crucial endeavors, including aiding in Nezuko's full restoration to humanity.

With the introduction of new plot elements and character developments, Demon Slayer Season 4 promises to set the stage for the looming final few arcs.

New episodes of Demon Slayer Season 4 are released each Sunday on Crunchyroll.
