Associate Research Scholar

This position will collaborate with the Director and Research Staff of the Law School’s Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) to execute the Center’s applied research agenda on the laws, policies, and practices that shape international investment and its alignment with sustainable development and human rights. The incumbent will contribute to ongoing projects and research related to the role and governance of investment in the realization of sustainable development. Specifically, this position will contribute to research and analysis of international investment policy and legal frameworks, and to alternative policies and practices related to international investment, particularly with respect to the Center’s focus on natural resource investments (e.g., land, agriculture, and mining), the energy transition, human rights, and finance.

This position also supports CCSI’s technical advisory work with select governments, companies, and civil society organizations. The incumbent will contribute to ongoing projects, including through project and advisory work, desk research, stakeholder consultations, organizing and facilitating events and trainings, maintaining contact with collaborators, and helping to develop materials for publications, among other possible activities. Requires a high degree of initiative and independent judgment.

This is a one-year position, with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• JD or equivalent legal degree, or PhD in law, finance, business, economics, or other related field.
• 5–10 years of experience in academia, the public sector, finance, or legal practice.
• Good understanding of how investment can play a role in addressing climate change and the critical importance of appropriate systems, laws, policies, and practices to achieve climate goals and facilitate the energy transition. Ability to grasp the complexity of economic ecosystems and the challenges involved in achieving change.
• Proven track record of driving high-level changes in systems, laws, policies, and behaviors through influencing, advocacy, and communications.
• Experience utilizing research findings to inform communication strategies and to support evidence-based advocacy.
• Experience managing a portfolio of projects to achieve significant beneficial outcomes.
• Evidence of strong people-leadership skills with both the motivation and ability to delegate effectively and empower others to deliver high performance.
• Willingness to learn new areas and to work in a highly interdisciplinary, flexible, and dynamic environment.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, research, and communication skills as well as initiative, motivation, and ability to think strategically.
• Must be willing and able to travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Background in economics and/or economic modeling.

Salary Range: $80,000–$95,000 a year.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Job Posting: Research Scholar, Valve Science Center

An established cardiology research team led by Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vinayak N. Bapat, MBBS, MCh, FRCS.CTh invites applications for a full-time research scholar to join the Valve Science Center team for a period of two years. Our research team is based at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA and works in collaboration with the Minneapolis Heart Institute® at Abbott Northwestern Hospital (MHI), part of the Allina Health System. We are seeking a highly motivated physician researcher who is interested in studying valvular heart disease and contributing to progress in the field to begin approximately August, 2024.

Top candidates enjoy and have experience in handling multiple projects and working independently as well as collaboratively in a research group. Using excellent written and oral English communication skills, scholars are expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.

This postdoctoral training experience includes mentorship from multi- subspecialty Valve Science Center physicians and support from a scientific services team in developing a research program, writing research proposals and career development.

Key Responsibilities and experience gained include:

• Under the oversight of several physician mentors, participate in the design, implementation, data analysis and presentation of multiple population research studies using scientific methods.
• Prepare and submit abstracts to scientific congresses and present the work in oral and/or poster formats.  The second year of the program typically involves presentation of publication of multiple scientific studies with the Valve Science Research Scholar as lead author. 
• Build experience and be mentored in medical writing and the publication process.
• Participate in clinical observations; note: this research position has no patient care responsibilities.
• Research focus areas will include aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valvular disease and interventions.

Duration: We will assist the chosen scholar in the acquisition of a research visa which is often granted in one-year increments. We are looking for a minimum commitment of 2 years full-time to optimize this training, education, research and publication experience.

Qualifications : Medical degree with track record of excellence. Completion of cardiology training is preferred but not required. Familiarity with state-of-the-art care in valvular and structural heart disease. Knowledge of scientific research methods, processes, and general familiarity with the design and execution of research protocols. Proficiency in English (verbal and written).  Possesses foundational skills in technology, including Excel, databases and PowerPoint. Experience working collaboratively in a team setting.

Postdoctoral Scholar - Research Associate

The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) at the University of Southern California (USC) is currently seeking a talented and self-motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to join the Laboratory of Dr. Albert E. Almada in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (SCRM); and Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.

The Almada Laboratory is investigating one of the greatest mysteries in muscle regenerative biology—how stem cells are turned on (activated) to rebuild functional muscle tissue after traumatic injury. Their multi-disciplinary team integrates state-of-the-art experimental and bioinformatic approaches to study this biological phenomenon at the molecular, cellular, and organ level in various vertebrate species, ranging the evolutionary continuum from lizards, to mice, and humans. Importantly, they investigate how stem cell dysfunction contributes to aging and muscular dystrophy, hoping to translate their basic science discoveries into therapies that benefit human health and longevity. The Almada lab is currently supported by two Junior Faculty awards from the Baxter Foundation, Glenn Foundation/American Federation of Aging Research (AFAR), and a recent R01 from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

For this position, we are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to engage in a fully funded project ( https://reporter.nih.gov/search/-JJMVjan4EqUaiIn4UMTag/projects ) to investigate stem cell dysfunction in aging skeletal muscle.

This is a fixed-term, full-time position. The Postdoctoral Scholar will assist faculty with research studies. The annual base salary of this position is $70,000 -$70,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Serve as a research trainee for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies. Participates in planning, designing, and conducting highly technical and complex research projects under the direction of a supervisor. He/she may or may not work independently.
• Analyzes and evaluates research data utilizing computers and provides interpretations requiring significant knowledge of a specialized area of research. Searches literature, utilizing all available resources including electronic, regarding new methodology and designs experiments accordingly.
• Contributes to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers, and/or records.
• Candidate will work on research projects in a highly interdisciplinary environment. Will work with senior research associates, technicians, PhD, and master’s students on projects related to stem cell biology and aging.

What Do Leading Edu-Scholars Think About DEI, Reading, and Research?

In January, I ran the 2024 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings , identifying 200 of the nation’s most influential education scholars. In recent years, I’ve followed up by reaching out to the Edu-Scholars with an informal query soliciting some thoughts and insight regarding research, practice, and policy. As always, I found the results instructive and thought I’d share a few highlights.

I asked about the most illuminating academic article they’d read on education last year and the study that had the biggest impact over the past decade. Raj Chetty’s work was the most commonly mentioned; other responses mostly alluded to broad themes, like research on teacher labor markets and reading. Notably, when asked what research had the biggest impact on the past decade, the most common answer was: “nothing.” This either reflects admirable humility on the part of the researchers or constitutes a rather damning indictment of the educational research enterprise today (or perhaps a bit of each).

Asked what advice they might provide to young researchers, one scholar offered a particularly striking bit of advice: “Follow the truth—there are too many ideologues out there and you’ll stand out just by being an honest broker.” That resonates with me. As I’ve noted to Pedro Noguera, our current level of distrust has profound consequences: “People are reluctant to reach out in good faith because they fear that, at best, they’ll be wasting their time and, at worst, they’ll be attacked or vilified.” Pedro and I have called for combating that tendency by extending each other the benefit of the doubt, dealing in good faith, avoiding “whataboutism,” and engaging deliberately and reflectively. “Following the truth” is a terrific addition to that list.

In light of the broiling debates around diversity in education, I asked the Edu-Scholars whether they supported or opposed colleges requiring DEI statements for hiring and promotion. Most respondents endorse the use of DEI statements in principle but say they have concerns about how those have been implemented. Smaller numbers of scholars wholeheartedly endorsed or flatly opposed DEI requirements. Perhaps the modal take was offered by the scholar who wrote, “I support DEI. But the statements are too vague. Plus, stop deferring to a statement. We already get faculty members’ CV, syllabi, and course evaluations. Take some time to actually review those materials. That way, we can see if they actually do work that encourages DEI, not just a statement saying they do.” Articulating the concerns about DEI, one skeptic explained, “In my experience, DEI statements are tools primarily for screening people out of searches using vague criteria. Most colleges don’t require similar statements on other important aspects of higher education, so requiring them implicitly puts DEI on a pedestal as the most important thing we do.”

I also asked the Edu-Scholars about their views on state efforts to adopt “science of reading” laws. Asked whether they supported or opposed these, respondents were pretty evenly split. Several noted either this isn’t their area of expertise or that their views depend on the particulars of the law. Supporters tended to emphasize concerns about academic achievement and current practices, while skeptics pointed to the need for educators to have discretion to address student needs and circumstances. Some of the particular takes were telling. A nominally supportive scholar wryly wrote of the laws, “I support them but will educators implement them? Doubt it.” One skeptic explained, “I just don’t think this is something that state governments should mandate. And I worry about establishing new loyalty oaths around a hotly contested subject!”

I find this annual exercise enlightening, if only to resurface familiar themes and provide a temperature check on where the education professoriate stands. It can be useful to recognize that those regarded as education oracles can be as conflicted and uncertain as the rest of us.

UTSA to host public health jobs panel on April 3

APRIL 2, 2024 — To celebrate National Public Health Week, the UTSA College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP) will present an interactive public health panel discussion beginning at noon on Wednesday, April 3, at the Student Union Retama Auditorium (SU 2.02.02). The event is free and open to the public.

Presented in partnership with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health), the panel will discuss the importance of public health departments across the nation and how the current job market is impacting those departments in Texas.

Additionally, the panelists will explore how San Antonio measures up and provide guidance to students who want to enter this bolstering industry.

“This opportunity will provide valuable insight, especially to students who are interested in building public health careers.”

Wednesday’s event is HCAP’s annual Guerra lecture, which honors the memory and work of Metro Health’s former director Dr. Fernando A. Guerra , a distinguished leader in public health and medicine who diligently worked to improve the public health system and help people across the country. The theme of this year’s lecture is, “Public Health Journeys: Empowering Communities, Changing Lives.”

The Guerra lecture is one of several events taking place at UTSA as part of National Public Health Week, which will run from Monday, April 1, through Sunday, April 7. Each year, UTSA uses the week to schedule a slate of events to educate, inform and help students find health-related careers.

Theresa De La Haya (Ret.), senior vice president of community health/clinical presentative programs at University Health System, will serve as moderator for the panel discussion.

The panel will feature Brian Castrucci , president and chief executive officer of the de Beaumont Foundation; Dr. Lyssa Ochoa , vascular surgeon and founder of the San Antonio Vascular and Endovascular Clinic and Phil Beckett , chief executive officer of C3HIE.

All three organizations aim to make health care work better for San Antonio and its citizens. The de Beaumont Foundation advances policy and builds partnerships to create communities where people can achieve their best possible health by investing in solutions to strengthen public health.

The San Antonio Vascular and Endovascular Clinic works with primary care physicians, specialists and community resources to create individualized treatment plans for patients. C3HIE offers value-based, patient-centered information services intended to improve the health status of individuals and the communities it serves.

The panel is part of HCAP’s Dean’s Community Lecture Series, which features distinguished community members to engage faculty, staff, students and the public in recognizing and addressing society’s grand challenges.

Beckett, Castrucci and Ochoa speak to our students, faculty, staff and community about the importance of empowering communities to improve public health and to honor Dr. Guerra’s legacy to San Antonio. The Dean’s Community Lecture Series is our flagship community-facing event, and we are pleased to partner with Metro Health in offering it during Public Health Week,” said Lynne Cossman , dean of HCAP. “This opportunity will provide valuable insight, especially to students who are interested in building public health careers.”

UTSA has long been preparing students for public health jobs, and since HCAP’s inception in 2020 has created several degree programs specific to develop public health leaders, including the M.S. in health, community and policy and the B.S. in health, aging and society. These degrees are ideal for students who have a strong desire to serve the community through programs that emphasize health at the individual level, as well as the community and population level.

The theoretical mechanism of the sublimation of uranium hexafluoride are considered. The most contribution to the rate of evaporation of UF 6 is introduced by the conductive mode of heat exchange. Various modes of the intensification of the evaporation of uranium hexafluoride during the nitrogen supply in pulse mode to the product mass are investigated. The nitrogen supply results in the turbulization of gas flow within a vessel (Re = 2500–4000) and significantly increases the rate of evaporation of uranium hexafluoride with the substantial decrease in a weight of the nonevaporable residue of 5.6–1.0 kg. The complex application of the pulse nitrogen supply in combination with heating the bottom of the vessel is the most effective method for evaporating uranium hexafluoride. The rate of evaporation of UF6 increases by a factor of almost four in comparison with the design mode. The developed methods are applied in industry and provide the stable operation of Saturn reactors during the conversion of uranium hexafluoride into its dioxide.
