15 YEARS OF JEANS
15 years ago Tamil cinema changed forever. In April of 1998 Jeans , directed by the revolutionary Shankar, was released & went on to captivate audiences internationally. I was just a kid then, but by the time the movie was done my lifelong obsession with Indian cinema had been born. My family & I saw it in the theatre 4 times, and it was the first film I remember reflecting on - thinking of how many people would have worked tirelessly to create something so epic. I developed my first on-screen crush on Prashanth and my cousins & I became obsessed with looking just like Aishwarya Rai (and that has not changed). My mom helped me learn the dance to “Kannodu Kanbethallam” and I personally vowed to one-day visit all the wonders Madhu & Visu did in their dreams. To this day Jeans remains my favorite Tamil film of all time. But why does it have this hold on me, and many others of my generation in particular? It was a production that was plagued with troubles, and at its core is just a simple family tale about a couple’s complicated path to marriage. So what is it about Jeans that makes it so special? Was it the magical cast that gelled so perfectly? It now seems impossible to imagine anyone but Prashanth & Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles, but in actuality heroes Abbas & Ajith were both approached first, and Prashanth eventually turned down 7 other films to be in Jeans. Was it the powerhouse crew comprised of industry icons? Surprisingly, it was 3 newcomers – Ashok Amitraj, Murali Manohar & Michael Solomon – who produced the magnum opus, and cinematography was originally assigned to Santhosh Sivan & art direction to Thotta Tharani (both legends in their craft), but, for various reasons, both roles were overtaken by Ashok Kumar and debutant Bala, respectively. But these debutants & changes panned out because the one & only Shankar led the crew. Always a leader in cinematic technology Shankar pushed the boundaries of Tamil cinema in the ‘90s and transported us around the world with some comedy, romance, song & dance. And the songs were certainly a big part of the magic: to date Jeans is one of AR Rahman’s best selling albums, with every single song topping the charts. From western genres to Carnatic music to songs with East Asian & Egyptian influences, Rahman captured the international theme of Jeans, and, along with Vairamuthu, the duo created music history. But maybe the true magic of the film is purely in its scope & the interesting tale of its creation. The whole thing took 1.5 years to make & was the most expensive Indian film made at that time. It was Shankar’s first film where major portions were shot outside of India &, in hindsight, sounds like a production coordinator’s nightmare. Shankar admitted he only had a rough idea for canning the wonders of the world, so without a formal plan the cast & crew travelled the globe together for 30 days, stopping to shoot at the world’s most popular tourist sites. As fate would have it, shooting was delayed when the team was in Paris because Princess Diana died in a tragic car crash in the very same city. By the time it was ready for release Jeans was over 4 months late. But of course it wasn’t just the cast, crew, music or extravaganza that produced the Jeans we reflect on today – it was the culmination of all these elements into a film that swept in a new wave of Tamil cinema. Jeans earned a whopping net 350 million rupees, won 5 awards and was India’s unconventional entry to the Oscars. Unlike the majority of other submissions it does not touch upon topics of violence, religion, caste, politics, patriotism, war, abuse, social status, illness, or terrorism. It is merely a wholesome entertainer, focused on family hijinx and love conquering all. Jeans shattered pre-conceived notions that light-hearted, happy-ending filled, family-oriented blockbusters could not be critically acclaimed. It was also one of the first Tamil films to resonate with Non-Resident-Indian & Sri Lankan audiences, who, like Nachiappan, had left their homelands but still tried their best to raise their children with the values & traditions of their roots. Jeans was a landmark film in Tamil cinema. Now, practically every story takes place outside of India. Jeans won awards for its bold takes on costume, and since then we have become accustomed to seeing our stars dress in the garb of other cultures when visiting foreign locales. And, carrying on the torch ignited by Jeans, Tamil cinema has also gone onto embrace many more types of new visual effects technology. Some may say that the film is not Shankar’s best to date or that the cast & crew have had bigger successes in their careers, but it was undoubtedly a milestone film for the industry & all involved…it certainly was for me. Maybe I am just obsessed with Jeans because it sparked my personal love for Indian cinema, but it’s not hard to see why this work of genius stands apart in Tamil filmdom’s history. So here’s to the 15 year anniversary of Jeans – a film made of “0% cotton and 100% love”, that proved that family entertainers with simple stories & happily ever after’s could be masterfully crafted into critically acclaimed feats of production. Here’s to a film that changed the landscape of Tamil cinema and captivated entire generations of moviegoers forever.

Vishu and Ramu are a pair of Indian twins living in America with their father, Rajamani. When Madhumita (Aishwarya Rai) and her brother come to America to get medical treatment for their ailing grandmother, Vishu and Ramu end up meeting them at the airport. Vishu falls in love with Madhumita, and the couple has everyone's blessing, except for Rajamani, who is estranged from his own twin brother. He only wants his sons to marry twin sisters, so Madhumita pretends to have a twin in order to please him. As Madhumita puts on a charade by creating Vaishnavi, all goes well, until Ramu falls in love with Vaishnavi. Now the truth must come out, before Madhumita has to marry both of Rajamani's twin sons.

heralded as the most expensive indian film to this point, but best remembered by a single scene in which an old woman tries to bring pickles through airport customs.
obsessed with twinning (four sets of twins, two genetic - the title is an intentional misspelling of 'genes - and two virtual), consumption, global capitol and iconography (coca-cola cans play significant roles, both as memento of lost loves and as ways to trick loved ones to drink brandy for hologram tricks), buried family sacrifice and the consolidation or confrontation of traditions both aesthetic and cultural.
one of the most fascinating responses by a regional film culture to a rapidly globalizing model, so drunk on its own power as spectacle (all 7…

A refreshing breezy tale of love, comedy, music and drama. Shankar, takes up an outdated storyline and pushes his boundaries with entertaining narrative elements and visual effect techniques to add fresh interesting moments. AR Rahman’s songs and BGM are scintillating. They turn even more exquisite, thanks to the breathtaking visuals. The rich production values are visibly evident and is the key USP. Comedy sequences work out well. The performances from the entire cast are brilliant, but Radhika steals the show with her cameo. A neat wholesome entertainer.

way too many one liners i couldnt pick one from so i have to put them all down:
1. there's white people and then there's white people who were, against their will, background characters in jeans (1998) 2. prashanth was the original simp, why are you. as a man so H word for a woman who looks exactly like your sister in law? 3. they submitted this to the oscars, so, somewhere out there is a committee of members who viewed this and then did not nominate it 4. prashanth gave up 7 different projects to film this for a whole year 😭 5. how did none of prashanth's fits qualify in comparison to aishwarya rai's 6. aishwarya rai in…

feel like the skeletons and the dinosaur and the barbie dreamhouse and the seven wonders of the world overshadowed the real heart of this, which is aishwarya collecting her crush's garbage and making a deranged wall hanging craft out of it

Weirdly reminded me of Satyam Shivam Sundaram (the obsession with doubling; a woman split into two against her will; how the spectacular is called on to process the traumatic) but instead of confronting the scary psychosexual depths of it all Shankar is like, "Look! A dancing skeleton! And also the dinosaur from Jurassic Park!" And honestly? I respect that.

I don't know how to review this because how do you sum up a life-changing artistic work in a few words?
I mean, it has everything I could ever want in a film: the best 90s fits, a stellar Aish performance, og heartthrob Nassar, TWINS, hijinks related to twins, gaslighting grandmother played by Lakshmi, RAJU SUNDARAM (!!!), Radhika being munhfat yet wisest in the end, not a single bad shot, a classic Rahman album and soundscape, NRIs NRI-ing, petty fights that are documented as if they were events of global significance, a world tour that doesn't seem forced, and so. much. more.
Perfect escapist cinema. The whimsical quality of the last 5 minutes will forever remain unmatched. The Oscars were even stupider than usual for ignoring this masterpiece!!

who wants to pretend to be a twin because my father will only let me and my twin brother marry twins because he is also a twin and his twin brother's non-twin wife killed my father's non-twin wife (my mother) during childbirth
the plot to this movie is simultaneously really simple and really complicated but it's always been super enjoyable and super visually stunning

Nachiappan is a wealthy and successful Indian American restaurateur based in Los Angeles. He has two sons – Viswanathan "Visu" and Ramamoorthy "Ramu" – who are identical twins. They both are medical students and spend their evenings helping out their father alongside the restaurant's chief cook, Juno. One evening, when Visu & Ramu go to the airport to do their lunch supply, Visu sees an Indian Tamil family from Chennai – Madhumitha "Madhu", her younger brother Madhesh, and their grandmother Krishnaveny – having some problems with the immigration authorities. Visu pitches in to help and learns that they just flew in from India so that Krishnaveny can undergo a surgery to remove her brain tumour. After many confusions, the trio meets with Ramu also. The twins arrange for the three to reach their host.
Krishnaveny is admitted in the hospital where Visu works as a resident doctor and the surgery is performed. Visu soon realises that Krishnaveny is paralysed as she was operated on the wrong side of her brain due to a mix-up with another patient. He appeals aggressively to the doctors and has the error corrected by another surgery, then spearheads an angry fight for compensation. The hospital compensates US$2 million to avoid a court case. Due to these actions, Madhu soon falls in love with Visu.
Krishnaveny soon realises that Madhu and Visu are in love and extends the family's stay in the US. However, Nachiappan objects to the romance as he wants his sons to marry identical twin girls. In a flashback, it is shown that Nachiappan had an identical twin brother Pechiappan, who lives in Karaikudi and is a simpleton. They both married for love in their youth, but Pechiappan's wife Sundarambal tortured and abused Nachiappan's pregnant wife Meiyaththa so badly that the latter died after giving birth to Visu and Ramu. Nachiappan eventually left the house along with Visu and Ramu to prevent Pechiappan and Sundarambal from separating over Meiyaththa's death.
Krishnaveny decides to solve the problem by lying to Nachiappan that Madhu does have an identical twin named Vaishnavi, who was raised separately in an orthodox Brahmin household. The reason for their separation is claimed that "having twins would bring bad luck on their family". Nachiappan falls for the lie and leaves for India along with Visu, Ramu, Juno, Krishnaveny, Madhu and Madhesh in order to "meet" Vaishnavi and fix the marriages of Visu and Ramu with Madhu and Vaishnavi respectively. Krishnaveny has Madhu pose as Vaishnavi, who contrary to Madhu, is very demure and traditional in nature. Ramu immediately falls in love with Vaishnavi, unaware that she is Madhu. Meanwhile, Pechiappan, whose marriage with Sundarambal has worsened due to the latter's inability to have children, attempts suicide. Nachiappan rescues him and hatches a plan to unite both the families through Visu's and Ramu's marriage plan. Nachiappan impersonates Pechiappan and leaves for Karaikudi, where with his business sense and practical nature, he rescues Pechiappan's failing restaurant business and eventually reforms Sundarambal as well. Pechiappan takes Nachiappan's place and stays with Visu and Ramu.
Eventually, Madhu, realising that Ramu is madly in love with her alter-ego, decides to stop acting as Vaishnavi as she feels she is hurting Ramu's as well as Visu's feelings through her act. Visu too finds out in parallel that Vaishnavi does not exist. Enraged, Visu and his family immediately leave Madhu's house, but Ramu tells him that Madhu had lied due to her love for him and convinces him to reconcile with her. Ramu further manages to convince his father, unaware that he is his uncle Pechiappan, to get Visu and Madhu married. When Nachiappan realises the truth and finds out that Visu and Madhu are getting married, he immediately rushes to Chennai with Sundarambal and stops the wedding. At this point, it is revealed that both Nachiappan and Pechiappan had impersonated each other in order to reunite both the families. Sundarambal manages to convince Nachiappan to get Visu and Madhu married since Madhu, by posing as Vaishnavi, had done the same thing that Nachiappan and Pechiappan did. Visu and Madhu get married. Later, at their reception, Madhesh entertains the couple and guests with computer-generated special effects.

23 years of Jeans: Let’s Look At Some Interesting Facts About This Epic Film in Kollywood Industry

Can you believe that Jeans is a 23 year-old film? Yet this film remains as one of the favorite film of everyone. As we all know, this film, directed by the renowned Director Shankar, was one of the finest and biggest productions at the time.
The film’s full production took around a year and a half to finish and release. Unlike Shankar’s other films, Jeans was the first to have substantial portions of the film shot outside of India.
This film is well-known for its stunning visuals, but it is equally well-known for its soundtrack. AR Rahman, the Oscar winner, sculpted each song to perfection.
Let’s have a look at some of the interesting things you might not have known before:
1. Jeans was the most expensive film to be made in Indian cinema industry in 1998. The budget for this film is 20 crores which was a huge amount back then.
2. Director Shankar wanted Actor Goundamani to appear in a dual role which was played by Actor Nasser but due to the actor’s unavailability, the whole genre of the film was changed from comedy to romance.
3. The initial role for the lead was offered to Abbas and Ajith Kumar. Both, however, declined due to a lack of availability. Luckily, Prashant accepted the offer and even sacrificed 7 projects devoting a year and a half for jeans.
4. Janaki Sabash who acted as Aishwarya Rai’s mother in this film was actually only four years older than Aishwarya. (WOW!)
5. The total runtime of Visual FX in this movie was more than Jurassic Park (1993) and was featured in Guinness Book of World Records for some time.
6. The film’s original title was “genes.” Later on, the producers realised that the term “genes” would not appeal to semi-urban and rural audiences. As a result, the film was renamed “jeans” to reflect its current popularity.
7. S.P Balasubramaniam was the original choice to play Aishwarya Rai’s dad in the film. The role eventually went to S.V Sekar.
8. The only Tamil song that feature all seven wonders of the world is from the film. In the song, Aishwarya Rai is referred to as the “eighth wonder.”
9. The film was India’s entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language film category. But it did not make it to the final short list.
10. The movie won for a national award for best visual effects. Music by A.R. Rahman won a Filmfare award, while the film received four Tamil Nadu State Awards.
I’m going to watch this movie today, it’s weekend bro. How about you?

- The father of twin brothers wants to get them married to only twin sisters. But one of the brothers falls in love with a woman does not have a twin sister.
- Vishu and Ramu are a pair of Indian twins living in America with their father, Rajamani. — Anonymous
- Madhumita lives with her mom, dad, brother, and grandma in India. As her grandmother has not been keeping good health, they take her for a check-up, only to find out that she can only be treated overseas in America. So Madhumita, and her brother accompany their grandma there. Upon arrival in America they are met with twin brothers, Vishnunath and Ramnath. After a few misunderstandings and misadventures, Vishnunath falls in love with Madhumita, and Madhumita also starts to fall in love with him. The twins' father, who also had a twin brother, would like his sons to marry twin sisters. Since Madhumita does not have a twin, looks like Vishnunath and Madhumita may have to separate and find other marriage partners or then can alternatively find a girl who resembles Madhumita, and who is willing to marry Ramnath. — rAjOo ([email protected])
- Nachiappan (Nassar) is a wealthy and successful Indian American restaurateur based in Los Angeles, USA. He has two sons - Vishwanathan "Visu" (Prashanth) and Ramamoorthy "Ramu" (Prashanth) - who are identical twins. They both are medical students and spend their evenings helping out their father alongside the restaurant's chief cook, Juno (Senthil). One evening, when Visu & Ramu go to the airport to do their lunch supply to KLM staff, Visu sees an Indian family from Chennai - Madhumitha "Madhu" (Aishwarya Rai), her younger brother Madhesh (Raju Sundaram), and their grandmother Krishnaveny (Lakshmi) - having some problems with the immigration authorities. Visu pitches in to help and learns that they just flew in from India so that Krishnaveny can undergo a surgery to remove her brain tumor. After many confusions, the trio meets with Ramu also (Visu vanishes out of sight and the trio start following Ramu when they see and mistake him for Visu). The twins arrange for the three to reach their host. Krishnaveny is admitted in the hospital where Visu works as a resident doctor and the surgery is performed. Visu soon realizes that Krishnaveny is paralyzed as she was operated on the wrong side of her brain due to a mix-up with another patient. He appeals aggressively to the doctors and has the error corrected by another surgery, then spearheads an angry fight for compensation. The hospital compensates US$2 million to avoid a court case. Due to these actions, Madhu soon falls in love with Visu. Krishnaveny soon realizes that Madhu and Visu are in love and extends the family's stay in the USA. However, Nachiappan objects to the romance as he wants his sons to marry identical twin girls. In a flashback, it is shown that Nachiappan had an identical twin brother Pechiappan, who lives in Karaikudi and is a simpleton. They used to run a restaurant together with Nachiappan as cook and Pechiappan as cashier. Pechiappan made mistakes in bills and Nachiappan's wife corrected him. They both married for love in their youth, but Pechiappan's wife Sundarambal (Raadhika) tortured and abused Nachiappan's pregnant wife Meiyaththa (Geetha) (as a punishment for correcting her husband publicly) so badly (Meiyaththa was feeling breathless and Sundarambal refused to let Pechiappan to go to the market to get her a soda. Nachiappa was at the market, buying groceries for the restaurant.) that the latter died (After she went to the market to get her own soda) after giving birth to Visu and Ramu. Nachiappan eventually left the house along with Visu and Ramu to prevent Pechiappan and Sundarambal from separating over Meiyaththa's death (the whole society blames Sundarambal for Meiyaththa's death and Sundarambal wants Pechiappa to split the property and leave, or else she will leave Pechiappa). Their mother wailed that as twins, if they had married sisters, they would have supported each other.. This is the root of Nachiappan's demand that Visu and Ramu should marry sisters. Krishnaveny decides to solve the problem by lying to Nachiappan that Madhu does have an identical twin named Vaishnavi, who was raised separately in an orthodox Brahmin household. The reason for their separation is claimed that "having twins would bring bad luck on their family". Nachiappan falls for the lie and leaves for India along with Visu, Ramu, Juno, Krishnaveny, Madhu and Madhesh in order to "meet" Vaishnavi and fix the marriages of Visu and Ramu with Madhu and Vaishnavi respectively. as Vellaiappan (S. V. Shekhar) is Madhumita's dad. Krishnaveny convinces Madhumita to spend some time with Ramu. She will arrange for the wedding with Visu and when done, they will tell Nachiappan that Vaishnavi has died or eloped. Krishnaveny has Madhu pose as Vaishnavi, who contrary to Madhu, is very demure and traditional in nature. The plan is that Ramu will reject a "desi" girl like Vaishnavi. Ramu immediately falls in love with Vaishnavi, unaware that she is Madhu. Madhesh uses sophisticated computer 3D images to give the impression that Madhu and Vaishnavi are 2 different girls. Nachiappan insists that both weddings take place on the same date. So, Krishnaveny's plan goes for a toss. Meanwhile, Pechiappan, whose marriage with Sundarambal has worsened due to the latter's inability to have children, attempts suicide. Nachiappan rescues him and hatches a plan to unite both the families through Visu's and Ramu's marriage plan. Nachiappan impersonates Pechiappan and leaves for Karaikudi, where with his business sense and practical nature, he rescues Pechiappan's failing restaurant business and eventually reforms Sundarambal as well (He defends Sundarambal when the villagers pressure Pechiappan to marry again, as his wife is barren. He says his wife tolerates his flaws and so, he will tolerate hers). Pechiappan takes Nachiappan's place and stays with Visu and Ramu. Eventually, Madhu, realizing that Ramu is madly in love with her alter-ego, decides to stop acting as Vaishnavi as she feels she is hurting Ramu's as well as Visu's feelings through her act. Visu too finds out in parallel that Vaishnavi does not exist (That she was a computer generated 3D image by Madhesh). When Nachiappan realizes the truth and finds out that Visu and Madhu are getting married, he immediately rushes to Chennai with Sundarambal and stops the wedding. Visu and Madhu get married and the movie ends with their reception, with Madhesh entertaining the couple and guests with computer-generated special effects.

Jeans is a 1998 Indian Tamil-language romantic-comedy film directed by S. Shankar. The film stars Prashanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Nassar in lead roles, and has music composed by A. R. Rahman. The film was released in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The story of Jeans revolves around twin sisters, Valli and Madhu, both played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Valli and Madhu are polar opposites. Valli is traditional in clothing and manner, whilst Madhu is a modern-day girl. The two sisters live with their father, who is a gynecologist. Madhu's boyfriend, Thomas, is an avid genealogist, and while researching his own family tree, finds out that his uncle's daughter is his cousin, Valli. Thomas sets out to meet Valli, but instead confuses her for Madhu.
Thomas visits Madhu's house only to realize that he has been mistaken, and actually met Valli. Madhu and Thomas both visit Valli's house, and Valli and Thomas fall in love. However, their love is short-lived when they realize that Valli's father is deeply traditional and doesn't approve of a foreign match for Valli. Meanwhile, Madhu is also in love with a foreigner, Raju, played by Prashanth. Raju, like Thomas, falls in love with the wrong sister, and the two men often confuse Valli for Madhu.
The film then takes a comedic turn, with both the sisters and their lovers desperately trying to find a solution to their confusion. They attempt to woo each other's love, using various tactics, including changing their physical appearance and personality. The film picks up a sentimental tone towards the second half, when the father of the two sisters reveals that Valli was adopted as a baby by their mother, who had died soon after giving birth. The film ends on a high note, with Valli and Madhu finally marrying their respective partners, much to the relief of their father.
Jeans was a commercial success at the time of its release, opening to packed theatres and drawing in crowds from across the country. The film's soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman, also became an instant hit, with tunes like "Columbus Columbus" and "Poovukkul" still popular among music lovers. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's performance in the film was widely appreciated, and she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Valli and Madhu.
Jeans was praised for its light-hearted storyline, superb performances, and dazzling visuals. The film's director, S. Shankar, is known for his grandeur and spectacular sets in his films, and Jeans was no exception. The film is rich in visual effects, and to this day, is considered a benchmark in Indian cinema.
Jeans marked the debut of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Tamil cinema, and launched her into the national spotlight. The film also propelled the career of its lead actor, Prashanth, who went on to act in many more films, including Virumbugiren, Kannathil Muthamittal, and Majunu.
Overall, Jeans is a quintessential family drama, with equal parts laughter and sentimentality. It is a film that has stood the test of time and is still loved by audiences of all ages. If you're in the mood for a feel-good romantic-comedy, Jeans is definitely worth your time.
