The Doctorate of Philosophy in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Project Management is designed for advanced graduate students with strong academic credentials who seek to focus on a specific research subject in depth. The program requires a minimum of 36 credit hours and combines advanced-level coursework with a doctoral dissertation. The PhD program is residential. UMD does not offer an online PhD program in Project Management.

Doctoral students will have many opportunities to research relevant theoretical and practical problems in major project-based industries including engineering and construction, real estate planning, government services, and others for use in their dissertations.

Every doctoral student is supervised by a designated professor and benefits from his or her personal guidance. A committee of other professors formed with expertise similar to the student’s topic of study will also be available for support.

The PhD program is designed with a foundation of five core courses and electives as needed to support their dissertation. Core courses and PM electives are shown below.

How to apply

Phd in business management admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

• A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
•  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

International Student Requirements

If you completed your most recent academic coursework, degree, or credential at an institution outside the United States, regardless of your citizenship or where you currently live, you are considered an international applicant.

In addition to the above admission requirements, you will need to submit these materials:

The PhD in Project Management program is structured for experienced professionals in this field with an appropriate undergraduate degree. Within the program, students will conduct original research in an approved area of Project Management.

Dissertation Chair

Dr. Richard Baker is Dissertation Chair of Graduate Programs at Capitol Technology University. He previously served as associate professor in Indiana State University’s Department of Aviation Technology, and as executive director of the Center for Unmanned Systems and Human Capital Development.  Richard holds a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science from Indiana State University. He received his doctorate in information systems from Nova Southeastern University.  

Dr. Craig Capano

Dissertation Chair/Adjunct Professor

Craig D. Capano, PhD, CPC, is a Dissertation Chair and Adjunct Professor at Capitol Technology University for PhD students in Construction Science. Dr. Capano earned his PhD in Civil Engineering, Master of Construction Science and Management degree, and a dual undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering and Construction Management. He completed post doctorate work at Harvard University’s College of Education focusing on Higher Education Administration. Dr. Capano brings extensive academic and professional experience with more than 47 years of experience in the construction industry and over 25 years in academic program leadership. He currently serves as principal of The Capano Group, a consulting firm for contractors and construction education.

Dr. Ian McAndrew

Prof. Ian R. McAndrew, PhD is a mechanical engineer who has worked in education nearly 30 years. His global teaching and research began in London and, now with Capitol Technology University where he is the Dean of Doctoral Programs, have taken him around the world. He has taught in over 25 countries, holds six degrees, is qualified as an Electrical Engineer, and is an accepted fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Association Fellowship, also known as a FRAeS. He has supervised over 80 PhDs and has almost 60 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. McAndrew’s current research is in aerodynamics and low speed flight. He is frequently invited to deliver keynote speeches and is the chair of several international conferences. Additionally, he is the editor or assistant editor in chief of several international academic journals.

Eric Motycka serves Capitol Technology University as the Director of Graduate Programs. Prior to joining Capitol Tech, Eric held multiple leadership positions in industries ranging from industrial coatings to financial services to Higher Education Advancement. Eric holds a BA in Literature and Writing from Burlington College, an MBA from Indiana State University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Indiana State University.

Degree Details

This program may be completed with a minimum of 60 credit hours, but may require additional credit hours, depending on the time required to complete the dissertation/publication research. Students who are not prepared to defend after completion of the 60 credits will be required to enroll in RSC-899, a one-credit, eight-week continuation course. Students are required to be continuously enrolled/registered in the RSC-899 course until they successfully complete their dissertation defense/exegesis.

The PhD program offers 2-degree completion requirement options:  

Dissertation Option: the student will produce, present, and defend a doctoral dissertation after receiving the required approvals from the student’s Committee and the PhD Review Boards. 

Publication Option: the student will publish three works of original research in a scholarly peer-reviewed journal(s) of high stature. Two of the three published works may be in a peer reviewed conference proceeding if the conference is international and approved by the Dean. The student will produce an exegesis culminating the work for their defense. Students must receive the required approvals from the student’s Committee and the PhD Review Board prior to publication. Prior Achieved Credits May Be Accepted.

Students learn about contemporary leadership theories and practices, complexity theories for improving projects, risk management techniques, and current and emerging methodologies.

3. Colorado Technical University

Students enrolled in Colorado Technical University’s Doctor of Management program have five concentration options from which to choose, or they can remain in the general track. Students will benefit from in-person symposium experiences and dissertation courses that are built into the curriculum. Most students complete the program in 3 years.

Colorado Technical University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

4. George Fox University

There are three concentration choices in George Fox University’s Doctor of Business Administration program: accounting, marketing, and management.

Students who pursue management will take a mixture of core business, education and teaching, and management-specific courses and complete a dissertation. They’ll also be required to come to campus a total of six times.

George Fox University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

5. Grand Canyon University

Students in the Doctor of Business Administration program at Grand Canyon University can select the management emphasis to learn about the complexities of management, law in business management, proposing organizational restructuring, and how to address complex issues in management.

Courses include business literature, designing organizational structures, and business economics.

Grand Canyon University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

6. Liberty University

The 60 credit Doctor of Business Administration in Project Management program at Liberty University can be completed entirely online in about 3 years.

The program is accredited by the ACBSP and features a Christian-centric curriculum. There are no standardized test scores required for admission, and a dissertation isn’t required to graduate.

Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

7. National University

National University’s Doctor of Business Administration in Project Management program puts heavy emphasis on leadership, team building, and the processes involved in overseeing projects.

The curriculum covers a lot of management-related material, such as bid negotiation and contracts, cost control, budget management, risk assessment, cost estimates, and performance reporting.

National University is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission.

8. Saint Leo University

Saint Leo University’s Doctor of Business Administration in Management program requires 57 total credits for completion.

Graduates should be able to provide original, intellectual contributions to business management fields, synthesize the global implications of research, and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in written, oral presentation, and critical thinking skills.

9. University of Maryland Global Campus

Students enrolled in the online Doctor of Business Administration program at University of Maryland Global Campus will receive advanced training in the fields of organizational leadership, change and sustainability, and management theory and strategic thinking.

The program utilizes the cohort method of instruction and requires 48 total credits for completion.

University of Maryland Global Campus is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

10. Walden University

Walden University’s Doctor of Business Administration in Project Management program is a comprehensive program that combines foundational, core business and business strategy courses with specialization and research methods courses.

There are also required courses in doctoral writing and doctoral mentoring. Two face-to-face academic residencies must also be completed before graduation.

Walden is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission.

Applicants to the School of Management’s PhD in Management program are not required to take the GMAT or GRE. 

UB's ​PhD in Management qualifies as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, which provides an additional 24 months Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 visa holders. PhD Degrees in Project Management

Project management involves the successful completion of projects by directing them from start to finish. Project managers are often found on legal teams, in training departments and in logistics. Planning a project requires skills in budgeting, time management and communication.

The USA remains the world’s most popular destination for international students. Universities in the US dominate the world rankings and the country also offers a wide variety of exciting study locations. State university systems are partially subsidized by state governments, and may have many campuses spread around the state, with hundreds of thousands of students.

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.
