Whether you’re nearing the end of your degree and your dissertation is on the horizon, or you’re planning to apply for a PhD program, chances are you’ll need to craft a convincing research proposal . If you’re on this page, you’re probably unsure exactly what the research proposal is all about. Well, you’ve come to the right place.

What is a research proposal?

Simply put, a research proposal is a structured, formal document that explains what you plan to research (your research topic), why it’s worth researching (your justification), and how  you plan to investigate it (your methodology). 

The purpose of the research proposal (its job, so to speak) is to convince  your research supervisor, committee or university that your research is  suitable  (for the requirements of the degree program) and  manageable  (given the time and resource constraints you will face). 

The most important word here is “ convince ” – in other words, your research proposal needs to  sell  your research idea (to whoever is going to approve it). If it doesn’t convince them (of its suitability and manageability), you’ll need to revise and resubmit . This will cost you valuable time, which will either delay the start of your research or eat into its time allowance (which is bad news). 

What goes into a research proposal?

A good dissertation or thesis proposal needs to cover the “ what “, “ why ” and” how ” of the proposed study. Let’s look at each of these attributes in a little more detail:

Your proposal needs to clearly articulate your research topic . This needs to be specific and unambiguous . Your research topic should make it clear exactly what you plan to research and in what context. Here’s an example of a well-articulated research topic:

An investigation into the factors which impact female Generation Y consumer’s likelihood to promote a specific makeup brand to their peers: a British context

As you can see, this topic is extremely clear. From this one line we can see exactly:

• What’s being investigated – factors that make people promote or advocate for a brand of a specific makeup brand
• Who it involves – female Gen-Y consumers
• In what context – the United Kingdom

So, make sure that your research proposal provides a detailed explanation of your research topic . If possible, also briefly outline your research aims and objectives , and perhaps even your research questions (although in some cases you’ll only develop these at a later stage). Needless to say, don’t start writing your proposal until you have a clear topic in mind , or you’ll end up waffling and your research proposal will suffer as a result of this.

Need a helping hand?

As we touched on earlier, it’s not good enough to simply propose a research topic – you need to justify why your topic is original . In other words, what makes it  unique ? What gap in the current literature does it fill? If it’s simply a rehash of the existing research, it’s probably not going to get approval – it needs to be fresh.

But,  originality  alone is not enough. Once you’ve ticked that box, you also need to justify why your proposed topic is  important . In other words, what value will it add to the world if you achieve your research aims?

As an example, let’s look at the sample research topic we mentioned earlier (factors impacting brand advocacy). In this case, if the research could uncover relevant factors, these findings would be very useful to marketers in the cosmetics industry, and would, therefore, have commercial value . That is a clear justification for the research.

So, when you’re crafting your research proposal, remember that it’s not enough for a topic to simply be unique. It needs to be useful and value-creating – and you need to convey that value in your proposal. It’s all good and well to have a great topic that’s original and valuable, but you’re not going to convince anyone to approve it without discussing the practicalities – in other words:

• How will you actually undertake your research (i.e., your methodology)?
• Is your research methodology appropriate given your research aims?
• Is your approach manageable given your constraints (time, money, etc.)?

While it’s generally not expected that you’ll have a fully fleshed-out methodology at the proposal stage, you’ll likely still need to provide a high-level overview of your research methodology . Here are some important questions you’ll need to address in your research proposal:

• Will you take a qualitative , quantitative or mixed -method approach?
• What sampling strategy will you adopt?
• How will you collect your data (e.g., interviews, surveys, etc)?
• How will you analyse your data (e.g., descriptive and inferential statistics , content analysis, discourse analysis, etc, .)?
• What potential limitations will your methodology carry?

So, be sure to give some thought to the practicalities of your research and have at least a basic methodological plan before you start writing up your proposal. How To Structure A Research Proposal

Now that we’ve covered the key points that need to be addressed in a proposal, you may be wondering, “ But how is a research proposal structured? “.

While the exact structure and format required for a research proposal differs from university to university, there are four “essential ingredients” that commonly make up the structure of a research proposal:

• A rich introduction and background to the proposed research
• An initial literature review covering the existing research
• An overview of the proposed research methodology
• A discussion regarding the practicalities (project plans, timelines, etc.)

How long should a research proposal be.

This varies tremendously, depending on the university, the field of study (e.g., social sciences vs natural sciences), and the level of the degree (e.g. undergraduate, Masters or PhD) – so it’s always best to check with your university what their specific requirements are before you start planning your proposal.

As a rough guide, a formal research proposal at Masters-level often ranges between 2000-3000 words, while a PhD-level proposal can be far more detailed, ranging from 5000-8000 words. In some cases, a rough outline of the topic is all that’s needed, while in other cases, universities expect a very detailed proposal that essentially forms the first three chapters of the dissertation or thesis.

Essay writing made easy: Tips and tricks for English language students

Writing essays in English is both very easy and very difficult. It’s difficult if you don’t know how to do it. And it’s easy if you do. In this post, let’s take a look at some essay-writing tips that you can follow if you are an English language student. Mind you, most of the stuff you can follow, even if you want to write in other languages. Let’s get straight into it. Essay writing tips: What you need to do The essay-writing process is typically divided into different parts and phases. For one, there is the research phase, the writing phase, and the checking phase. We’ll talk about some tips that you can follow during research, the actual writing, and so on. 1. Pick the right sources for your research The first step in the process is research. And incidentally, it is also the most important. If you take proper care during the research, you can improve the overall quality of your essay. Of the many things that you have to do for good research, the first thing is to find the right sources for it. The broad criterion that you can set to find “good” sources is to look for the ones that are generally hailed as reliable and authoritative. Think of places like the New York Times website or Forbes. Since we’re talking about writing essays, however, some sources that you can consider using are as follows: 1. Google Scholar – a good place to find academic papers on various topics 2. ResearchGate – pretty much performs the same function as G Scholar 3. JSTOR – same thing once again And so on. Depending on the type of essay you’re writing and the institution you’re associated with, there may be some additional instructions and guidelines that you may have to follow about the research sources. Some institutes may have certain restrictions in place about some research sources, such as Wikipedia, etc. If there are any such restrictions in place, you should take them into consideration before deciding on the sources. 2. Don’t copy-paste from the sources …because that’s plagiarism. Plagiarism is something akin to a disease in academics. Its presence in your essay will only warrant the rejection of the latter. You should never copy-paste anything directly from your research sources, even if it happens to be a single line or sentence. Rather, when taking information from a source, here is what your routine should be. 1. First, you should open multiple sources at a time so that your tone, tenor, and information don’t get influenced 2. When taking information from the sources, you should note them down as points using your own words. This falls within the old “take ideas, not content” advice. 3. Whenever taking information, you should note down the citation details of the sources. Then you should create and add the citations whenever adding the borrowed information. If you note down ideas, you will be able to expound on them without using the same words as the source. This will help you steer clear of plagiarism issues. 3. Keep the essay organized Proper content organization can do wonders for the quality of your essay. An organized essay can look better on the eyes and be generally more readable. Here is what you should do to make your essay organized: 1. Split up the contents using headings and sub-headings 2. Follow a proper progression for the headings, sub-headings and section-headings in the typical cascading format…something that goes like this a. Heading i. Sub-heading 1. Section heading 3. Use bullets to convey information in a more readable way. Things like steps for a process and multiple items are better off written in the form of lists rather than a paragraph. 4. Keep your wording clear Just as proper organization can help with the overall quality and readability of your essay, the same goes for the choice of words you use. Using needlessly difficult words isn’t recommended in any type of content, be it an essay or anything else. Oftentimes, using difficult words can also get you confused about what you want to write. For example, a person describing the inordinate craving for people to utilize recondite terminology with unprecedented fervor…may lose what they’re trying to say in the first place. Of course, other than this, the main benefit of using easy words is that the essay becomes more readable for the reader – who, in this case, can be the teacher or the instructor. To bring them together in the form of a list, here are some tips that you can follow to make your wording easy and simple. 1. Firstly, take care not to use any words that you may think are alien to normal conversation. 2. If the situation demands the use of a difficult word, be sure to address and explain it for the ease of your reader(s). 3. Once you are done writing the draft of your essay, you should give it a couple of thorough reads and re-reads. If you come across any difficult words that you may have used without realizing it, you can fix them then. Another good way to go about the last step there is to use a paraphrasing tool. [ লোমভ ঢােকে, ড্রেস-জ্যাকেট আর সাদা দস্তানা পরে। চুবুকভ তাকে স্বাগত জানাতে উঠে দাঁড়ায়। ]

চুবুকভ : আমার প্রিয় সঙ্গী, কাকে দেখছি আমি! ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভিচ! আমি অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত। [তার হাত চেপে ধরে] এটা একটা চমক, প্রিয়তম আমার….. কেমন আছ? 

লােমভ : ধন্যবাদ। আর আপনাদের কেমন চলছে? 

চুবুকভ : আমাদের কোনােভাবে চলে যাচ্ছে, লক্ষ্মীসােনা আমার, তােমাদের প্রার্থনা, আর ওইসব আর কি। বােসাে, বােসাে। …এখন, তুমি দ্যাখাে, সােনা আমার, তােমার প্রতিবেশীদের একদম ভুলে যাওয়া তােমার উচিত নয়। তা সাজপােশাকে এত বাবুয়ানা কেন, মানিক আমার? সান্ধ্যপােশাক, দস্তানা, সব কিছু কোথাও কি যাচ্ছ তুমি, ধন আমার? 

লােমভ : না, আমি শুধু আপনার সঙ্গে দেখা করতে এসেছি, মাননীয় স্টিপান স্টিপানােভিচ। 

চুবুকভ : তাহলে সান্ধ্যপােশাক পরেছ কেন, মানিক আমার? যেন তুমি নববর্ষ পালন করছ! 

লােমভ : ইয়ে, দেখুন, ব্যাপারটা এরকম। [তার হাত ধরে] আমি আপনার কাছে এসেছি, মাননীয় স্টিপান স্টিপানােভিচ, একটা অনুরােধ নিয়ে আপনাকে বিরক্ত করতে। আপনার কাছে সাহায্যের জন্য আবেদন করার বিশেষ সুবিধে একবার বা দু-বারের বেশিই পেয়েছি, বলতে নেই আপনি সবসময়ই…. আমার অবশ্যই আপনার কাছে ক্ষমা চাওয়া উচিত, আমি উত্তেজিত হয়ে পড়ছি। আমি একটু জল খাব, মাননীয় স্টিপান স্টিপানােভিচ। [ জল খায়।] 

চুবুকভ : [ জনান্তিকে ] ও এসেছে টাকা ধার করতে! কিচ্ছু দেব না ! [ উচ্চকণ্ঠে ] কি ব্যাপার, চাঁদবদন আমার? 

লােমভ : দেখুন, মাননীয় স্টিপানিচ… মাফ করবেন, স্টিপান অনারিচ… মানে, আমি প্রচণ্ডভাবে উত্তেজিত, আপনি যদি দয়া করে লক্ষ করেন… সংক্ষেপে বললে, আপনিই একমাত্র সাহায্য করতে পারেন আমাকে, যদিও আমি এর যােগ্য নই, অবশ্যই…. আর আপনার সাহায্যের উপর ভরসা করার

কোনাে অধিকার নেই।…. 

চুবুকভ : ওঃ, অত ইনিও বিনিও না, প্রিয়! মনে যা আছে চটপট বলে ফ্যালাে! দেখি?

লােমভ : এক সেকেন্ড…. এক্ষুনি বলছি। ঘটনাটা হচ্ছে, আমি এসেছি আপনার মেয়ে নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনার পাণিপ্রার্থী হয়ে, বিয়ের জন্য। 

চুবুকভ : (সানন্দে) আরেব্বাস! ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভিচ! আবার বলাে….. আমি পুরােটা শুনিনি! 

লােমভ : আমার গৌরব যে আমি চাইতে পারছি……

চুবুকভ : [থামিয়ে দিয়ে ] আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু… আমি এত আনন্দিত, ইত্যাদি… হ্যা, সত্যি, আর ওই ধরনের সব ব্যাপার-স্যাপার আর কি। [ লােমভকে আলিঙ্গন আর চুম্বন করেন ] আমি অনেকদিন ধরে এর জন্য আশা করে আছি। আমার বহুদিনের আকাঙ্ক্ষা ছিল। এটাই। [এক ফোটা চোখের জল ফেলে] আর আমি। তােমাকে সবসময় ভালােবেসেছি, আমার দেবদূত, যেন তুমি আমার নিজের ছেলে। ভগবান যেন তােমাকে তার সাহায্য আর তার ভালােবাসা দুটোই দেন, আর ওইসব, আর আমি এত বেশি আশা করেছিলাম…. আমি এরকম বুন্ধুর মতাে আচরণ করছি কীসের জন্য? আনন্দে আমি ভারসাম্য হারিয়ে ফেলেছি, পুরােপুরিভাবে হারিয়ে ফেলেছি! ওঃ আমার সমস্ত মনপ্রাণ দিয়ে….. আমি যাব আর নাতাশাকে ডাকব, আর ওইসব আর কি। 

লােমভ : [ খুবই আপ্লুত ] মাননীয় স্টিপান স্টিপানােভিচ, আপনার কি মনে হয় আমি ওর সম্মতির উপর

ভরসা করতে পারি? 

চুবুকভ : কেন, অবশ্যই, আমার সােনামণি, আর… যেন ও রাজি হবে না! ও প্রেমে পড়েছে; হা ভগবান, ও একটা প্রেমাতুর বেড়ালের মতাে, আর ওইসব আর কি…. এই এল বলে! [ প্রস্থান ]

লােমভ : খুব ঠান্ডা…. আমার সারা শরীর কাপছে, ঠিক যেন সামনেই আমার পরীক্ষা। মােদ্দা কথা হল, মনটাকে আমার ঠিক করে নিতেই হবে। আমি যদি আমাকে সময় দিই ভাবার, দোনামনা করার, রাজ্যের কথা বলার, একটা আদর্শ বা খাঁটি ভালােবাসার খোঁজ করার, তাহলে আমার কোনােদিনই বিয়ে হবে না….. হিহিহি… খুব ঠান্ডা ! নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা একজন গৃহকর্মে নিপুণা, দেখতে মন্দ নয়, সুশিক্ষিতা…. আর কী চাই আমার? কিন্তু উত্তেজনার চোটে আমার কান ভো ভো করছে। [ জল খায় ] আর আমার পক্ষে বিয়ে না করা অসম্ভব…. প্রথমত, আমি ইতিমধ্যেই পঁয়ত্রিশ – একটা গুরুতর বয়স, সেভাবে বলতে গেলে। দ্বিতীয়ত, আমাকে একটা শান্ত আর নিয়মিত জীবনযাপন করতেই হবে… আমি বুক ধড়ফড়ানিতে ভুগি, আমি উত্তেজনাপ্রবণ আর সবসময়েই অতিরিক্ত বিচলিত হয়ে পড়ি… ঠিক এই মুহূর্তে আমার ঠোটগুলাে কাপছে, আর আমার ডান ক্রু কাপছে।…. কিন্তু সবথেকে খারাপ হচ্ছে আমি যেভাবে ঘুমােই। যেই না আমি বিছানায় শুই আর ঘুমে ডুবে যেতে শুরু করি, অমনি আমার বাঁ-দিকে একটা কিছু হঠাৎ করে এক হ্যাচকা টান দেয়, আর আমি এটাকে টের পাই আমার কাধে আর মাথায়। …আমি একটা পাগলের মতাে লাফিয়ে উঠি, একটু হেঁটেচলে বেড়াই, আর আবার শুই , কিন্তু যেই আমি আবার ঘুমিয়ে পড়তে যাব তখন

আর একটা হ্যাঁচকা টান! আর এটা কুড়িবার ঘটতে পারে।… [ নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা ভেতরে আসে। ] 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আরে, আপনি এসেছেন, আর বাবা বললেন, “যাও, একজন বণিক এসেছেন তার মালপত্রের জন্য।” কেমন আছেন, ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভিচ! 

লােমভ : মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা, আপনি কেমন আছেন? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আপনাকে অবশ্যই আমার অ্যাপ্রন ও মলিন পােশাক মাপ করতে হবে…. আমরা মটরশুটি ছাড়াচ্ছিলাম শুকোনাের জন্য। এতদিন আসেননি কেন? বসুন। [তারা বসে ] আপনি দুপুরের খাবার খাবেন না? 

লােমভ : না, ধন্যবাদ, আমি আগেই খেয়েছি। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : তাহলে ধূমপান করুন।…. এই নিন দেশলাই…. আবহাওয়া এখন চমৎকার, কিন্তু গতকাল এত স্যাঁতসেঁতে ছিল যে কাজের লােকেরা সারাদিন কিছু করেননি। আপনি কত খড় গাদা করেছেন? ভাবুন। একবার, এমন লােভ হচ্ছিল যে একটা গােটা মাঠের ঘাস কাটিয়ে নিয়েছি, আর এখন আমি এ ব্যাপারে আদৌ খুশি নই কারণ আমার ভয় হচ্ছে আমার খড় পচে যেতে পারে। আমার আরও কিছুটা অপেক্ষা করা উচিত ছিল। কিন্তু এটা কী? আপনি সান্ধ্যপােশাকে কেন! না বাবা, আমি কখনও পারি না! আপনি বলনাচের আসরে যাচ্ছেন নাকি?—যদিও আমি। অবশ্যই বলব যে আপনাকে বেশ ভালাে দেখাচ্ছে। বলুন না, ওরকম সাজগােজ কেন? 

লােমভ : [উত্তেজিত] দেখুন, মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা… আসল ব্যাপারটা হচ্ছে, আমি

মনস্থির করে ফেলেছি আপনাকে আমার কথা শুনতে বলব বলে… অবশ্যই আপনি আশ্চর্য

হবেন আর হয়তাে রেগেও যাবেন, কিন্তু একটা…. [জনান্তিকে] কী ভয়ংকর শীত! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : কী ব্যাপার? [ সাময়িক বিরতি ] বলুন? 

লােমভ : আমি সংক্ষেপে বলার চেষ্টা করব। আপনার জানা দরকার, মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা, যে আমি বহুকাল ধরে, আমার ছেলেবেলা থেকে, বস্তুত, আপনার পরিবারকে জানার সুযােগ পেয়েছি। আমার স্বর্গীয় কাকিমা আর তার স্বামী, যাঁদের কাছ থেকে, যেমন আপনি জানেন, আমি আমার জমিজমা উত্তরাধিকারসূত্রে লাভ করেছি, আপনার বাবা আর আপনার স্বর্গীয় মাকে চিরকাল অত্যন্ত শ্রদ্ধা করতেন। লােমভদের আর চুবুকভদের মধ্যে পরস্পরের জন্য বরাবর সবথেকে বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ, আর আমি এও বলতেই পারি যে সবথেকে স্নেহাসক্ত উচ্চ ধারণা রয়েছে। আর, আপনি যেমন জানেন, আমার জমি আপনার জমির নিকট প্রতিবেশী।

আপনার মনে পড়বে যে আমার অক্সেন মেডােজ আপনার বার্চ গাছের জঙ্গল লাগােয়া।

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : মাপ করবেন আপনাকে থামাতে হচ্ছে বলে। আপনি বলছেন, “আমার অক্সেন মেডােজ…”  কিন্তু ওটা কি আপনার? 

লােমভ : হ্যা, আমার। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : কী বলছেন আপনি? অক্সেন মেডােজ আমাদের, আপনার নয়! 

লােমভ : না, আমার, মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : বেশ, আমি আগে কখনও এটা জানতাম না। আপনি এটা কীভাবে বুঝতে পারলেন? 

লােমভ : কীভাবে? আমি ওই অক্সেন মেডােজ-এর কথা। বলছি যেটা আপনার বার্চ গাছের জঙ্গল আর বার্নট মার্শের মাঝামাঝি অবস্থিত। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা: হ্যাঁ, হ্যাঁ…… ওগুলাে আমাদের।

লােমভ : না, আপনার ভুল হচ্ছে, মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা, ওগুলাে আমার।

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : একটু ভেবে দেখুন, ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভিচ! কতদিন ধরে ওগুলাে আপনার? লােমভ : কতদিন ধরে? আমি যতদুর মনে করতে পারি, ততদিন ধরে

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : সত্যি, আপনি আমাকে এটা বিশ্বাস করাতে পারবেন না। 

লােমভ : কিন্তু আপনি দলিল দস্তাবেজ থেকে দেখতে পারেন, মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা। অক্সেন মেডােজ, এটা ঠিক, একসময় মতবিরােধের বিষয় ছিল, কিন্তু এখন সবাই জানে যে ওগুলাে আমার। এখানে তর্ক করার কিছু নেই। আপনি দেখুন, আমার কাকিমার ঠাকুরমা এই মেডােজ অনন্তকালের জন্য আপনার বাবার ঠাকুরদার হালচাষিদের অবাধে ব্যবহার করতে দিয়েছিলেন, যার প্রতিদানে তার জন্য তাদের ইট বানানাের কথা ছিল। আপনার বাবার ঠাকুরদার হালচাষিরা চল্লিশ বছর ধরে মেডােজ অবাধ ব্যবহারের অধিকার ভােগ করতে করতে সেগুলােকে নিজেদের বলে ভাবায় অভ্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ে, যখন এটা ঘটেছিল যে… 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : না, এটা একেবারেই ওরকম নয়! আমার ঠাকুরদা আর ঠাকুরদার বাবা দুজনেই মনে করতেন যে তাদের জমি বার্নট মার্শ পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত ছিল— যার মানে অক্সেন মেডােজ ছিল আমাদের। এখানে তর্ক করার কী আছে আমি বুঝি না। এটা স্রেফ বােকাবােকা! 

লােমভ : আমি আপনাকে নথিপত্র দেখাব, নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা!

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : না, আপনি নিছক ইয়ার্কি মারছেন, বা আমাকে নিয়ে ঠাট্টা করছেন। ….কী আশ্চর্য! প্রায় তিনশাে বছর ধরে জমিটা আমাদের, আর তারপর হঠাৎ করে আমাদের বলা হল যে এটা আমাদের নয়! ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভি, আমি আমার নিজের কানকে বিশ্বাস করতে পারছি না। ….এই মেডােজ আমার কাছে তেমন মূল্যবান কিছু নয়। ওগুলাে সব মিলিয়ে শুধু পাঁচ ডেসিয়াটিনস [ ১৩.৫ একর ], আর হয়তাে ৩০০ রুব-এর সমান কিন্তু আমি অন্যায্য কথা সহ্য করতে পারি না। যা বলার বলুন, কিন্তু আমি

লোমভ : আমার কথা শুনুন, আমি মিনতি করছি! আপনার বাবার ঠাকুরদার হালচাষিরা, যেমন ইতিমধ্যেই আপনাকে বােঝানাের সুযােগ পেয়েছি, ইট বানাত আমার কাকিমার ঠাকুরমার জন্য। এখন আমার মাসির ঠাকুরমা, এই ইচ্ছে নিয়ে যে তিনি তাদের একটা সুখকর….. 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমি এইসব কাকিমাদের আর ঠাকুরদাদের আর ঠাকুরমাদের কোনাে মাথামুণ্ডু বুঝতে পারছি না। মেডােজ আমাদের, আর এটাই শেষ কথা। 

লােমভ : আমার! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমাদের! আপনি দু-দিন ধরে টানা প্রমাণ

করে যেতে পারেন, আপনি গিয়ে পনেরােটা ড্রেস-জ্যাকেট চড়াতে পারেন, কিন্তু আমি আপনাকে বলছি ওগুলাে আমাদের, আমাদের, আমাদের! আমি যেমন আপনার কোনাে কিছু চাই না তেমনি আমার কিছু ছাড়তেও চাই না। ব্যস! 

লােমভ : নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা , আমি মেডােজ চাই না, কিন্তু আমি নীতি মেনে কাজ করছি। আপনি যদি চান, আমি আপনাকে ওগুলাে উপহার দেব।

চুবুকভ : কী ব্যাপার? কী নিয়ে চিৎকার করছ তােমরা? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : বাবা, দয়া করে এই ভদ্রলােককে বল: গ্রিন মেডােজ-এর মালিক কে, আমরা নাকি উনি? 

চুবুকভ : [ লােমভকে] বাবা, ওই মেডােজ আমাদের! 

লােমভ : কিন্তু, দয়া করে ভেবে দেখুন, স্টিপান স্টিপানােভিচ, ওগুলাে কী করে আপনাদের হতে পারে? একজন বুঝদার মানুষের মতাে আচরণ করুন! আমার কাকিমার ঠাকুরমা মেডােজ দিয়েছিলেন আপনার ঠাকুরদার হালচাষিদের সাময়িক আর অবাধ ব্যবহারের জন্য। চাষিরা জমিটা চল্লিশ বছর ধরে ব্যবহার করে আর এটার সঙ্গে এমন অভ্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ে যেন এটা তাদের নিজেদের, যখন কিনা ঘটেছিল….

চুবুকভ : মাপ করবে, মানিক আমার….. তুমি শুধু এটা ভুলে যাচ্ছ, যে চাষিরা তােমার ঠাকুরমাকে কোনাে টাকাকড়ি দিত না আর ওইসব, কারণ মেডােজ নিয়ে বিতর্ক ছিল, আর ওইসব। আর এখন সবাই জানে যে ওটা আমাদের। তার মানে তুমি নকশাটা দ্যাখােনি। 

লােমভ : আমি তােমার কাছে প্রমাণ করে দেব যে ওগুলাে আমার! 

চুবুকভ : তুমি এটা প্রমাণ করতে পারবে না, আমার সােনামণি।

লােমভ : আমি করব! 

চুবুকভ : প্রিয় আমার, ওভাবে চ্যাঁচাচ্ছ কেন? তুমি শুধু চেঁচিয়ে কিছু প্রমাণ করবে না। আমি তােমার কোনাে কিছু চাই না, আর আমার যা আছে তা ছাড়তে চাই না। কেন দেব? আর তুমি জানাে, প্রিয় আমার, তুমি যদি এ ব্যাপারে তর্ক চালিয়ে যাওয়ার অভিপ্রায় করে থাকো, আমি খুব শিগগিরই মেডােজ তােমাকে

দেওয়ার বদলে চাষিদের মধ্যে বিলিয়ে দেব। ব্যস! 

লােমভ : আমার মাথায় ঢুকছে না! অন্য কারাের সম্পত্তি বিলিয়ে দেওয়ার অধিকার আপনার কীভাবে আছে? 

চুবুকভ : তুমি এটাকে এভাবে নিতে পারাে যে আমি জানি আমার অধিকার আছে কি না। কারণ, ছােকরা, ওইরকম গলার স্বরে আমার সঙ্গে কেউ কথা বলবে, এতে আমি অভ্যস্ত নই, আর ওইসব আর কি: আমি, হে ছােকরা, বয়সে তােমার থেকে দ্বিগুণ বড়াে, আর আমি তােমাকে বলছি নিজেকে উত্তেজিত না করে আমার সঙ্গে কথা বলতে, আর ওইসব আর কি।

লােমভ : দেখা যাবে। আমি ব্যাপারটাকে আদালতে নিয়ে যাব, আর তারপর আমি তােমাদের দেখাব! 

চুবুকভ : আদালতে? তুমি এটাকে আদালতে নিয়ে যেতে পারাে, আর ওইসব আর কি! তুমি পারাে! আমি তােমাকে জানি; তুমি স্রেফ আদালতে যাওয়ার একটা সুযােগের খোঁজে থাকো, আর ওইসব আর কি…. বটতলার উকিল! তােমার বংশের সবাই এরকম ছিল! সবাই!

লােমভ : আমার বংশ নিয়ে তােমাকে মাথা ঘামাতে হবে না! লােমভরা সবাই সজ্জন ব্যক্তি ছিলেন, আর কেউ কখনও অন্যের ধন অপহরণের দায়ে কাঠগড়ায় দাঁড়াননি, তােমার ঠাকুরদার মতাে! 

চুবুকভ : তােমাদের লােমভদের পরিবারে সবাই ক্ষ্যাপা ছিল, সবাই! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : সবাই, সবাই, সবাই! 

চুবুকভ : তােমার ঠাকুরদা ছিলেন একজন মাতাল, আর তােমার ছােটো পিসি, নাসতাসিয়া মিহাইলােভনা, একজন স্থপতির সঙ্গে পালিয়ে গিয়েছিল, আর ওইসব আর কি। 

লােমভ : আর আপনার মা ছিলেন কুঁজো। [তার বুক চেপে ধরে] আমার একদিকে কিছুতে টান পড়ছে….

আমার মাথা….বাঁচাও! জল! 

চুবুকভ : তােমার বাবা ছিলেন একজন মােদোমাতাল জুয়াড়ি! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আর তােমার কাকিমার সঙ্গে পাল্লা দেয় এরকম বিশ্বাসঘাতক আড়ালে নিন্দে করার লােক বেশি পাওয়া যাবে না! 

লােমভ : আমার বাঁ পা-টা অসাড় হয়ে পড়েছে।…. তুমি একজন চক্রান্তকারী। …..ওঃ, আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড! ..আর এ গােপন কথা সবাই জানে যে গত নির্বাচনের আগে তুমি ঘু…. আমি তারা দেখতে পাচ্ছি…. আমার টুপিটা কোথায়? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : এসব হীন! অসৎ! নীচ! 

চুবুকভ : আর তুমি স্রেফ একজন ক্রূর, দু-মুখাে চক্রান্তকারী!

লােমভ : এই যে আমার টুপি…. আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড! …কোন দিকে? দরজাটা কোথায়? ওঃ! …..আমার মনে হয় আমি মারা যাচ্ছি।… আমার পা-টা একেবারে। অসাড়।….। [ দরজার দিকে চলে যায়।] । 

চুবুকভ : [ তাকে অনুসরণ করে ] আর কখনও আমার ঘরে পা রেখাে না! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : ব্যাপারটাকে আদালতে নিয়ে যাও! আমরা দেখে নেব! [ লােমভ টলতে টলতে বেরিয়ে যায়।] 

চুবুকভ : শয়তানের খপ্পরে পড়ুক ও! [ উত্তেজনায় পায়চারি করে।] 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : কী বদমাশ লােক! প্রতিবেশীদের উপরে কী আস্থা কেউ রাখতে পারে এরপর! 

চুবুকভ : পাজির পাঝাড়া! কাকতাড়ুয়া! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : রাক্ষস! প্রথমে আমাদের জমি দখল করে আর তারপর আমাদেরই গালাগালি দেওয়ার ঔদ্ধত্য  দেখায়। 

চুবুকভ : আর ওই অন্ধ মুরগিটা, আলবাত, ওই শালগম। ভূতটার আবার স্পর্ধা আছে একটা প্রস্তাব করার, আর ওইসব! কী ? না একটা প্রস্তাব! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : কী প্রস্তাব ? 

চুবুকভ : আরে, ও এখানে এসেছিল যাতে তােমাকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দিতে পারে। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : বিয়ের প্রস্তাব? আমাকে? আমাকে এটা আগে বলনি কেন? 

চুবুকভ : তাই তাে সান্ধ্যপােশাক পরে ঘুরছিল। তুলাে-ঠাসা পাশবালিশ! শুটকো বুড়াে! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমাকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দিতে? আহ! [একটা আরাম-চেয়ারে এলিয়ে পড়ে আর বিলাপ করে] ওকে ফেরত আনাে! ফেরত আনাে! আহ! ওকে এখানে নিয়ে এসাে। 

চুবুকভ : কাকে এখানে আনব? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : জলদি, জলদি! আমি অসুস্থ! ওকে নিয়ে এসাে! পাগলের মতাে আচরণ করে।] 

চুবুকভ : কী হল? কী হল কি তােমার? [ তার মাথা চেপে ধরে] ওহ, আমি যে কী অসুখী! আমি নিজেকে গুলি করে মারব! আমি গলায় দড়ি দেব! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমি মারা যাচ্ছি! ওকে নিয়ে এসাে! 

চুবুকভ : এক্ষুনি যাচ্ছি। চেঁচিও না! [ ছুটে বেরিয়ে যায়। একটু বিরতি। নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা বিলাপ করে। ]

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : ওরা আমার কী করল! ওকে ফিরিয়ে আনাে! ফিরিয়ে আনাে! [ একটু বিরতি।] 

[ চুবুকভ ছুটে ঢােকেন।] । 

চুবুকভ : ও আসছে, আর ওইসব, শয়তান ধরুক ওকে! উফফ! ওর সঙ্গে নিজে কথা বলাে; আমি চাই।

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : [ বিলাপ করে ] ওকে নিয়ে এসাে! 

চুবুকভ : [চ্যাঁচ্যাঁন] ও আসছে, আমি বলছি তােমাকে। ওঃ, ঈশ্বর, একজন ধেড়ে মেয়ের বাবা হওয়া যে কী বােঝা! আমি আমার গলা কাটব! আমি কাটব নিশ্চয়ই! আমরা ওকে শাপশাপান্ত করলাম, গালাগালি দিলাম, তাড়িয়ে দিলাম, আর এসব করালে তুমি… তুমি! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : না, তুমি! 

চুবুকভ : আমি তােমাকে বলে দিচ্ছি এটা আমার দোষ নয়। [লােমভ দরজায় আবির্ভূত হয়] এবার তুমি নিজে ওর সঙ্গে কথা বলাে [প্রস্থান।] [লােমভ ঢােকে, অবসন্ন।] 

লােমভ : আমার বুকটা ভীষণভাবে ধড়ফড় করছে। … আমার পা-টা অসাড় হয়ে পড়েছে।…. একটা কিছু আমার একপাশে টান মেরেই চলেছে।

স্টিপানােভনা : আমাদের ক্ষমা করুন, ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভিচ, আমরা সবাই একটু তেতে ছিলাম।…. আমার এখন মনে পড়েছে: অক্সেন মেডােজ আসলে আপনারই।

লোমভ : আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড প্রচণ্ডভাবে ধুকপুক করছে।.. আমার মেডােজ।… আমার ভ্রু কাপছে।… 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : মেডােজ আপনার, হ্যা, আপনার… বসুন,বসুন।. [ওরা বসে] আমাদের ভুল হয়েছিল।….. 

লােমভ : আমি এটা নীতিগতভাবে করেছি। …আমার জমির মূল্য আমার কাছে সামান্যই, কিন্তু ওই নীতি…. 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : হ্যা, নীতি, যা বলেছেন। ….এবার অন্য কিছু নিয়ে কথা বলি চলুন। 

লোমভ : এটা আরও বেশি যেহেতু আমার কাছে প্রমাণ আছে। আমার মাসির ঠাকুরদা তােমার বাবার

ঠাকুরদার হালচাষিদের জমিটা দিয়েছিলেন….. 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : ঠিক, ঠিক, ওসব যেতে দিন… [ জনান্তিকে | ইশ যদি জানতাম কীভাবে ওকে শুরু করানাে যায়। …. [জোর গলায়] আপনি কি শিগগিরই শিকার শুরু করবেন? 

লোমভ : ফসল কাটার পর, যাব ভাবছি, মাননীয়া নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা। ওঃ, আপনি কি শুনেছেন? কী দুর্ভাগ্য আমার, ভাবুন একবার! আমার কুকুর গেস, যাকে আপনি জানেন, খোঁড়া হয়ে গিয়েছে।

লােমভ : আমি জানি না।…..নিশ্চয়ই মােচড় লেগেছে, বা অন্য কোনাে কুকুরের কামড় খেয়েছে। … [দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে] আমার সবথেকে ভালাে কুকুরটা, দামের কথা ছেড়েই দিলাম। আমি মিরােনােভকে ওর জন্য ১২৫ রুবলস দিয়েছিলাম।

লােমভ : আমার মনে হয় এটা খুব সস্তাই। ও একটা সেরা জাতের কুকুর। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : বাবা ওঁর স্কুইজারের জন্য ৮৫ রুব দিয়েছিলেন, আর স্কুইজার গেস্-এর থেকে ঢের ভালাে। 

লােমভ : স্কুইজার গেস্-এর থেকে ভালাে? কী অবাস্তব ভাবনা! [ হাসে ] স্কুইজার গেস্-এর থেকে ভালাে। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : অবশ্যই ও ভালাে। অবশ্যই, স্কুইজারের বয়স কম, ও আরও বাড়তে পারে, কিন্তু বৈশিষ্ট্য আর বংশগৌরবের বিচারে ও এমনকি ভলক্যানেস্কির যা আছে তার থেকেও ভালাে। 

লােমভ : মাপ করবেন, নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা, কিন্তু আপনি ভুলে যাচ্ছেন যে ওর উপরের চোয়াল নীচের চোয়ালের থেকে বেরিয়ে থাকে, আর তার মানেই হচ্ছে কুকুরটা বাজে শিকারি!

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : ওর উপরের চোয়াল নীচের চোয়ালের থেকে বেরিয়ে থাকে, তাই নাকি? আমি এটা এই প্রথম শুনলাম! 

লােমভ : আমি হলফ করে আপনাকে বলে দিচ্ছি ওর নীচের চোয়াল উপরের চোয়ালের থেকে ছােটো।

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : প্রথম, আমাদের স্কুইজার একটা জাতকুলীন প্রাণী, হানেস আর চিজেন্স—এর ছেলে, যখন কিনা। তােমার কুকুরের বংশপঞ্জির কোনাে বালাই নেই….. ও বুড়াে আর জুড়িগাড়ির জরাজীর্ণ ঘােড়ার মতাে কুৎসিত। 

লােমভ : ও বুড়াে, কিন্তু আমি ওর জায়গায় পাঁচটা স্কুইজারকেও নেব না।… আরে, কী করে ভাবলেন। আপনি? …গেস একটা কুকুর, আর স্কুইজারের ব্যাপারে, কী আর বলব…. তর্ক করাটা খুবই হাস্যকর…. আপনার যাকে খুশি দেখবেন তারই স্কুইজারের মতাে একটা কুকুর আছে…. প্রায় সব। ঝােপঝাড়ের তলাতেই ওদের দেখতে পাবেন। ওর জন্য পঁচিশ ডলার খরচ করাটাও যথেষ্ট দাম। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আজ আপনার মধ্যে অসংগতির কোনাে রাক্ষস ঢুকেছে, ইভান ভ্যাসিলোভিচ। প্রথমে আপনি ভান করলেন যে মেডােজ আপনার; আর এখন, ভান করছেন যে গেস স্কুইজারের থেকে ভালাে। আমি সেই লােকদের পছন্দ করি না যারা মনে এক, মুখে আর-এক, কারণ আপনি ভালােমতাে জানেন যে স্কুইজার আপনার বােকা গেস-এর থেকে একশাে গুণ ভালাে। আপনি কেন বলতে চান যে ও তা নয়? 

লােমভ : আমি বুঝতে পারছি, নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা, যে আপনি আমাকে মনে করেন হয় অন্ধ নয় একটা বুন্ধু। আপনাকে এটা বুঝতেই হবে যে স্কুইজারের উপরের চোয়াল নীচের চোয়ালের থেকে এগােনাে !

লােমভ : আপনার কুকুরটা তাই!

লোমভ : চ্যাঁচাচ্ছেন কেন, ম্যাডাম? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : যা-তা বলছেন কেন? এটা জঘন্য ব্যাপার! এখন আপনার গেস-এর গুলি খেয়ে মরার কথা, আর আপনি তাকে তুলনা করছেন স্কুইজারের সঙ্গে?

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমি দেখেছি সেইসব শিকারিরা সবথেকে বেশি তর্ক করে যারা সবথেকে কম জানে।

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমি চুপ করব না যতক্ষণ না তুমি মানছ যে স্কুইজার তােমার গেস্-এর থেকে একশাে গুণ ভালাে! 

লােমভ : একশাে ভাগ খারাপ! তােমার স্কুইজারকে ফাসি দিয়ে দাও ! স্কুইজার! ওর মাথা….. চোখ….. কাঁধ. 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : তােমার বন্ধু গেসকে তাে ফাঁসি দেওয়ারও দরকার নেই! ও ইতিমধ্যেই আধমরা! 

লোমভ : [ককিয়ে ওঠে] চুপ করাে! আমার হৃৎপিণ্ডটা ফেটে যাচ্ছে। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : আমি চুপ করব না। [ চুবুকভ ঢােকে। ] 

চুবুকভ : এখন আবার কী হল? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : বাবা, আমাদের সত্যি করে বলাে, কোনটা ভালাে কুকুর, আমাদের স্কুইজার নাকি ওর গেস।

লােমভ : স্টিপান স্টিপানােভিচ, আমি আপনার কাছে মিনতি করছি আমাকে শুধু একটা কথা বলতে: আপনাদের স্কুইজারের উপরের চোয়াল নীচের চোয়ালের থেকে এগিয়ে থাকে কি না? হ্যা কি না? 

চুবুকভ : আর যদি তাই হয়? তাতে কী এসে যায়? সবকিছু সত্ত্বেও ও জেলার মধ্যে সবথেকে ভালাে কুকুর, আর ওইসব।

লােমভ : কিন্তু আমার গেস কি ওর চেয়েও ভালাে নয়? দোহাই, সত্যি বলুন? 

চুবুকভ : নিজেকে উত্তেজিত কোরাে না, মানিক আমার …আমাকে বলতে দাও…তােমার গেস-এর অবশ্যই কিছু ভালাে বৈশিষ্ট্য আছে….. ও খাঁটি জাতের, পায়ের উপর স্থির, সুগঠিত পাঁজর আছে ওর, আর ওইসব আর কি। কিন্তু, আমার প্রিয়ভাজন, তুমি যদি সত্যিটা জানতে চাও, ওই কুকুরটার দুটো খুঁত আছে: ও বুড়াে আর ওর নাক আর মুখের অংশটা ছােটো। 

লােমভ : আমাকে মাফ করবেন, আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড ….সত্যিগুলােকে মেনে নেওয়া যাক। …আপনার মনে পড়বে যে মারুসিনস্কি শিকারের সময়ে আমার গেস কাউন্টের কুকুরের সঙ্গে পাল্লা দিয়ে ছুটেছিল, যখন কিনা আপনার স্কুইজার পেছনে পড়ে গিয়েছিল। 

চুবুকভ : ও পেছনে পড়ে গিয়েছিল কারণ কাউন্টের কর্মচারী, যে শিকারি কুকুরদের পরিচালনা করে সে তাকে চাবুক দিয়ে মেরেছিল। 

লােমভ : আর তার জন্য যথেষ্ট কারণ ছিল। কুকুরগুলাে দৌড়ােচ্ছে একটা খাকশেয়ালের পেছনে, যখন স্কুইজার গিয়ে একটা ভেড়াকে বিরক্ত করতে শুরু করে! 

চুবুকভ : এটা সত্যি নয়! ..আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু, আমি প্রায় মেজাজ হারিয়ে ফেলছি, আর তাই, শুধুমাত্র সেই কারণে, আমরা বরং তর্ক করা বন্ধ করি। তুমি শুরু করেছিলে কারণ সবাই অন্য সবার কুকুরদের ব্যাপারে ঈর্ষাপরায়ণ। হ্যা, আমরা সবাই এরকম!

তুমিও, মশাই, নির্দোষ নও! যেই তুমি দ্যাখাে যে কোনাে কুকুর তােমার গেস-এর থেকে ভালাে। অমনি শুরু করে দাও এটা, ওটা….. আর অন্যটা…. আর ওইসব। ….আমার সব মনে থাকে! 

লোমভ : আমারও থাকে!

চুবুকভ : [ ওকে ভেংচিয়ে ] আমারও থাকে। …তা কী মনে থাকে তােমার? 

লােমভ : আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড….. আমার পা-টা অসাড় হয়ে পড়েছে। …..আর পারছি না…..। 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : [ ভেংচিয়ে ] আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড …কী ধরনের শিকারি তুমি? তােমার উচিত রান্নাঘরে গিয়ে চুল্লির উপর শুয়ে শুয়ে কালাে গুবরেপােকা ধরা, খ্যাকশেয়ালের পেছনে ধাওয়া করা নয়! আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড!

চুবুকভ : হ্যা সত্যিই, কী ধরনের শিকারি তুমি, যাই হােক না কেন? তােমার উচিত বুক ধড়ফড়ানি নিয়ে ঘরে বসে থাকা, জন্তুদের অনুসরণ করা নয়। তুমি শিকার করতে যেতে পারতে, কিন্তু তুমি শুধু লােকজনের সঙ্গে তর্ক কর আর তাদের কুকুরদের নিয়ে নাক গলাও আর ওইসব। আমার মাথা গরম না হয়ে যায়। তাই বিষয়টা বদলে ফেলা যাক। তুমি আদৌ কোনাে শিকারি নও, যাই হােক না কেন! 

লোমভ : আর আপনি কি একজন শিকারি? আপনি শুধু শিকার করতে যান কাউন্টের সঙ্গে বন্ধুত্ব পাতানাের। আর গােপনে ষড়যন্ত্র করার জন্য। ….ওঃ, আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড!…আপনি একজন ষড়যন্ত্রকারী!

চুবুকভ : কী ? আমি ষড়যন্ত্রকারী! [ চ্যাঁচান ] চুপ করাে! 

লােমভ : ষড়যন্ত্রকারী! 

চুবুকভ : ছােকরা! কুকুরের বাচ্চা! 

লােমভ : বুড়াে ইঁদুর! গোঁয়ারগােবিন্দ! 

চুবুকভ : চুপ করাে নয়তাে আমি তােমাকে একটা তিতির পাখির মতাে গুলি করে মারব! বুদ্ধু কোথাকার! লােমভ : সবাই এটা জানে—ওঃ আমার হুৎপিণ্ড!—আপনার স্বর্গীয়া স্ত্রী আপনাকে পেটাতেন।….. আমার পায়ের পাতাগুলাে …রগগুলাে… ঝলকানি দিচ্ছে। ….আমি পড়লাম, আমি পড়লাম! 

চুবুকভ : আর তুমি তােমার গৃহকত্রীর বশীভূত! 

লােমভ : গেল, গেল, গেল…..আমার হৃৎপিণ্ডটা ফেটে গেল! আমার কাধটা খুলে আসছে। …আমার কাঁধটা কোথায়? আমি মরলাম। [একটা আরামকেদারায় উল্টে পড়ল] একজন ডাক্তার! [অজ্ঞান হয়ে যায়।] 

চুবুকভ : কচিখােকা! মেনিমুখাে! বােকারাম! আমার ঘেন্না ধরে গিয়েছে! [ জল খান ] ঘেন্না ধরে গিয়েছে! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : কী ধরনের শিকারি তুমি? তুমি তাে এমনকি একটা ঘােড়ার উপর বসতেও পারাে না! [ তার বাবার উদ্দেশে ] বাবা, ওর কী হল? বাবা, দ্যাখাে, বাবা! [চ্যাঁচায়] ইভান ভ্যাসিলোভিচ! ও মরে গিয়েছে! 

চুবুকভ : আমি অসুস্থ! …আমি নিঃশ্বাস নিতে পারছি না! ….বাতাস! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : ও মারা গিয়েছে। [লােমভের জামার হাতা ধরে টানে] ইভান ভ্যাসিলেভিচ! তুমি আমার ওর সঙ্গে এটা কী করলে? ও মারা গিয়েছে। [একটা আরামকেদারায় লুটিয়ে পড়ে] একজন ডাক্তার, একজন ডাক্তার! [অপ্রকৃতিস্থ অবস্থা।] 

চুবুকভ : ওঃ! …..কী হয়েছে? ব্যাপারটা কী? 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : [ বিলাপ করে ] ও মারা গিয়েছে…. মারা গিয়েছে! 

চুবুকভ : কে মারা গিয়েছে? [ লােমভকে দেখেন ] তাই তাে! দ্যাখাে কাণ্ড! জল! ডাক্তার! [ লােমভের মুখের কাছে একটা বাটি তুলে ধরেন ] এটা খাও! আর ওইসব আর কি। …মানুষের মধ্যে আমিই সবথেকে অসুখী! কেন আমি আমার মগজে একটা গুলি চালিয়ে দিচ্ছি না? আমি এখনও পর্যন্ত কেন আমার গলাটা কেটে ফেলিনি? আমি কীসের জন্য অপেক্ষা করে আছি? আমাকে ছুরি দাও ! আমাকে পিস্তল দাও! [ লােমভ নড়েচড়ে] বেঁচে উঠছে মনে হয়। ….একটু জল খাও! ঠিক, ঠিক।.. 

লােমভ : আমি তারা দেখতে পাচ্ছি ….কুয়াশা ….আমি কোথায়?

চুবুকভ : চটপট বিয়েটা সেরে ফ্যালাে আর তােমার শয়তানির দিব্যি! ও রাজি! [তিনি লােমভের হাতটা তার মেয়ের হাতে দেন।] ও রাজি আর ওইসব আর কি। আমি তােমাদের আশীর্বাদ করি আর ওইসব আর কি। শুধু আমাকে শান্তিতে থাকতে দাও! 

লােমভ : [ উঠে বসে ] আঁ? কী? কার সঙ্গে? 

চুবুকভ : ও রাজি আছে! হয়েছে? চুমু খাও আর দুজনে চুলােয় যাও! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : [চেঁচিয়ে ওঠে] ও বেঁচে আছে…. হ্যা, হ্যা, আমি রাজি ।…..। 

চুবুকভ : একে অন্যকে চুমু খাও! | 

লােমভ : আঁ? কাকে চুমু খাব? [ ওরা চুমু খায় ] এটাও খুব ভালাে। মাপ করবেন, এসব কী ব্যাপার? ওঃ, এখন বুঝতে পারছি ……আমার হৃৎপিণ্ড …..তারারা ….আমি খুশি। নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা …. [ওর হাতে চুমু খায়] আমার পা-টা অবশ হয়ে পড়েছে।….. 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা: আমি… আমিও খুশি।… 

চুবুকভ : কী ভারী একটা বােঝা নামল আমার কাঁধ থেকে। …ও ! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : কিন্তু…. তবুও এবার তুমি স্বীকার করবে যে গেস স্কুইজারের থেকে খারাপ।

লোমভ : খারাপ! 

চুবুকভ : বেশ, এটাও তােমাদের পারিবারিক পরম আনন্দ শুরু করার একটা ধরন! একটু শ্যাম্পেন খাও! 

লােমভ : (গেস) ভালাে! 

নাতালিয়া স্টিপানােভনা : খারাপ! খারাপ! খারাপ! 

চুবুকভ : [ চেঁচিয়ে তাকে দমানাের চেষ্টা করে ] শ্যাম্পেন! শ্যাম্পেন!
