Social science research (SSR) has a vital role in enriching societies, by generating scientific knowledge that brings insights—even enlightenment—in understanding the dynamics of human behaviour and development. For social sciences to realize their potential in shaping public policy, it is imperative that the research ecosystem is dynamic and vibrant; the institutions governing it are robust and effective; and those producing quality research are strong and well governed. This volume elaborates on various dimensions of SSR in India, presenting a strong case for designing a comprehensive national social science policy which can meaningfully strengthen and promote a research ecosystem for improved public policymaking in the country. Addressing issues like lack of funding, availability of data, infrastructure, and quality of research output, it will serve as a national benchmark and reference database for social sciences in India.

The increased interest among social work educators and practitioners from India and Australia has created many pathways for innovative and creative learning opportunities through exchange programs. Social work educators and practitioners in both the countries have proactively engaged in international short-term faculty and student exchanges and field placements, research activities and collaborative initiatives such as workshops, international conferences and joint publishing of social work texts. The authors, from Bharathidasan University (BDU) and James Cook University (JCU), noted the success of these original endeavors and particularly their potential to create momentum beyond the initial activity. They saw that focusing on collaborative social work learning in their own smaller contexts could create positive change and impact in ways they did not anticipate. This experience, replicated in other collaborative activities, provided enormous insights and learning on both sides, leading finally to the idea of documenting cross-cultural perspectives from India and Australia. In this chapter the authors present their perspective on the scenario of social work education, research and practice in India and Australia. Besides, brief summaries of all the chapters of the book are also presented.

Social Work Research in India: No Man's Land

Profile image of Dr. Sandeep Jagdale

2014, University News

Social work education in India is celebrating its seventh decade. Indeed, it is quiet courageous to say that social work as a profession in India has well rooted in the country. No doubt every profession has to undergo the struggle in respect to alienating from other subjects and establishing itself as systematic, strategic, empirical and legal binding profession. Social Work, what author believed, now at the stage to work on its work, outputs, underpinnings. The time has gone when we talk about standards, knowledgebase, history and development, raising the spectrum of social work institutions. It is high time now, where we are at risk of repression because of lack of visibility, acceptance and accountability; popularly questioned as ‘Where are you?’ The article envisages the present scenario about social work research in India and how research will be instrumental to form social work as a profession in our country and its irrefutable demand.

Ramesh Chandran

social work research topics in india

husain siddiqui

The paper discusses the current state of social work education, practice and research in India to suggest the future prospect of the profession in India. It is argued that the massive expansion of social work education and practice in India and globally, and widening the scope of practice to include macro practice have both created confusion for students thus undermining the quality of practice.

chandan chaman

Enormous concerns have been raised time and again about the social work in India as an academic discipline that it is not progressing as it should be. The problem amply has been located in profession intellectual impoverishment, lackadaisical attitude and meagre contribution in production of indigenous knowledge. Much discourse has marked it and proposed solutions. Solutions are yet to take concrete shape and discourse never moved beyond this argument. The problem now needs to be seen from different perspective than mere symbolic articulations. This paper makes an attempt to understand the development and other concerns of social work in India by comparing it with the sociology in India. The rationale for choosing sociology is that the writer is familiar with the discipline and sociology is also in proximity with the social work. The comparative analysis provides fresh insights. It presents that the problems with which social work in India is grappling with is also the case with sociology in India. The paper does not aim to satiate the critical aspect of social work in India instead it calls for invigorating the discipline by looking at the problem from comparative perspective. While comparing, the paper amply focuses on the gaps in practice, pedagogy and production of knowledge of both the disciplines and brushes through some tension areas. The writer must mention that this paper is using comparative perspective just to understand the status of social work with the help of sociology and not is in race with sociology. Both the disciplines have different objectives, theoretical and methodological orientation but operate towards similar goal of enriching social science.

Neera Agnimitra

Neera Agnimitra, Manoj K. Jha and Mohd. Shahid Teaching as well as practice in India has been more favourably inclined towards engaging with issues and domains which remain within its comfort zones. The profession is still undergoing the existential crisis and that is why the tag of being 'at the crossroads' is unrelentingly 'real' even now. Under the garb of the popularly held belief that 'social work has to be apolitical', schools of social work and practitioners have opted to carve out a convenient functional niche that singularly avoids any encounter with a discom-forting agenda, and prevents its constituents from taking a counter-hegemonic posture. Keeping in view the endemic nature of oppression, and its frequent manifestation in violence based on gender, caste, and religion, the schools of social work in India, need to review their thrust/objectives, courses and praxis. A Gramscian framework is used to make sense of the popular professional perceptions (common sense) on social work teaching and practice. Examining the value bases and world views which inform the teaching and practice of social work, this article argues for integrating the values of human rights and social justice. The article cautions the social workers from becoming what Gramsci calls the dominant group " duputies " exercising the subaltern functions of social hegemony.

Miriam Kuttikat

This article uses the particularity of social work in India as a case study for exploring the complexities of how globalization and a Western discourse can affect universal social work. The authors recommend that the Gandhian approach can help bring the social work profession back to focusing on community-based learning and practice, in order to empower those most marginalized in their local communities.

International Journal of Social Work and Human Services Practice

Social Work Education in the Northeast region of India began only in the year 1992. Since then a number of institutions have come forward to offer Bachelors, Masters’ and Doctorate programmes and studies in the discipline. This article captures the history of twenty two recognised institutions offering social work programmes in the region and draws out key empirical issues pertaining to course curriculum, field work and the concretisation of social work as a recognised profession within the said context.

Sanjai Bhatt

This paper attempts to elucidate the trend of social work education in India through an analysis of social work educational institutions (SWEIs). Despite limited evidences on the nature, figures and patterns of SWEIs, the analysis depicts emergence and development of social work education. It is evident from this paper that the decade of 2001-2010 witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of SWEIs across the country and almost half of SWEIs in the country were established during this decade. A cursory analysis shows that Tamil Nadu accounts for almost one-fifth of the SWEIs, followed by Madhya Pradesh (13.5 percent) and Maharashtra (12.55 percent). The paper reveals a direct relationship between the globalisation and the establishment of SWEIs in India as a large number of SWEIs (72.2 percent) came in to existence after the process of globalisation began in India after 1991. The paper also highlights several concerns associated with the SWEIs.

About Stop Overdose

  • Through preliminary research and strategic workshops, CDC identified four areas of focus to address the evolving drug overdose crisis.
  • Stop Overdose resources speak to the reality of drug use, provide practical ways to prevent overdoses, educate about the risks of illegal drug use, and show ways to get help.

Red concentric circles with text

Drugs take nearly 300 lives every day. 1 To address the increasing number of overdose deaths related to both prescription opioids and illegal drugs, we created a website to educate people who use drugs about the dangers of illegally manufactured fentanyl, the risks and consequences of mixing drugs, the lifesaving power of naloxone, and the importance of reducing stigma around recovery and treatment options. Together, we can stop drug overdoses and save lives.

What you can do

  • Get the facts on fentanyl
  • Learn about lifesaving naloxone
  • Understand the risks of polysubstance use
  • Reduce stigma around recovery and treatment

Explore and download Stop Overdose and other educational materials on CDC's Overdose Resource Exchange .

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics. National Vital Statistics System, Mortality 2018-2021 on CDC WONDER Online Database, released in 2023. Data are from the Multiple Cause of Death Files, 2018-2021, as compiled from data provided by the 57 vital statistics jurisdictions through the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program. Accessed at http://wonder.cdc.gov/mcd-icd10-expanded.html on Mar 5, 2024

Every day, drugs claim hundreds of lives. The Stop Overdose website educates drug users on fentanyl, naloxone, polysubstance use, and dealing with stigma.
