Get Ahead This Summer with Summer Assignments

As the summer sun shines brightly, students are gearing up for several months filled with exciting adventures and relaxation. The district encourages students and parents/guardians to take advantage of an invaluable opportunity to prepare for the upcoming school year: summer assignments. These assignments, carefully designed by our staff, provide a valuable head start and have been proven to contribute to academic success. Research has consistently shown that students who complete summer assignments experience numerous benefits that extend beyond the classroom. Here are some key reasons why engaging in summer assignments is crucial: 1. Retention of Knowledge: During the long summer break, students often experience a decline in academic skills. Summer assignments combat this "summer slide" by reinforcing and reviewing core concepts, allowing students to retain knowledge and skills gained during the previous school year. 2. Building Independence: Summer assignments provide an opportunity for students to take charge of their own learning. Completing these tasks independently fosters essential skills such as time management, organization, and self-discipline, setting a strong foundation for success in future academic endeavors. 3. Smooth Transition: Summer assignments bridge the gap between grade levels, ensuring a seamless transition from one school year to the next. By familiarizing themselves with upcoming coursework and concepts, students are better prepared to face new challenges and hit the ground running when school resumes. 4. Exploration and Enrichment: Summer assignments often include engaging projects, readings, or research that encourage students to explore new topics and expand their knowledge beyond the regular curriculum. This fosters a love for learning and nurtures intellectual curiosity, helping students develop a lifelong passion for education.

The significance of summer assignments is supported by compelling data. Research conducted by the National Summer Learning Association reveals that students who participate in summer learning programs or complete summer assignments experience positive effects on their academic performance. Some notable statistics include: 1. Improved Reading Skills: Students who engage in summer reading activities perform 35-40% better in reading comprehension tests compared to those who do not participate. 2. Mathematics Mastery: Students who complete summer math assignments display increased math skills, resulting in an advantage of 2.6 months of learning over their peers who do not participate. 3. Closing the Achievement Gap: Summer learning loss disproportionately affects disadvantaged students. However, participating in summer assignments can help close the achievement gap and mitigate educational inequalities.

The statistics speak for themselves, highlighting the positive impact that summer assignments have on students' academic performance. Make the most of this summer and embrace the opportunity to grow, learn, and excel when we return to school in the fall.

Re: Summer Hours for Guidance Counselors
The following is a request for the summer of 2012
1. High School - minimum of 5 (five) days
The request is that ten (10) counselors work 5(five) days each. The cost of this would be
$20,000 (5 days @ $400 per day = $2000; $2000 x 10 = $20,000).
Justification:
• Scheduling. Counselors need to adjust schedules due to class balancing and refinements
of the master schedule, as well as checking the final schedule for each student enrolled.
During the summer some students attend summer school and the necessary adjustments
must be made. Course requests need to be updated once failures are in and summer
school registration has been completed.
• Special Education scheduling. Counselors need to ensure proper accommodations and
placements for classified students, especially new entrants during the summer, or those
1EPs that have been changed by re-evaluations. We need to make sure that these
students are in the right classes to stay in compliance
• Registering new students into the district. Because the transition into a new school is a
big one, we feel that welcoming new students and their parents into the West Orange
district with a tour of our building is important. We can also get a background on the
new student since most transcripts are incomplete, etc. The high school has
approximately 120 new students each year. These students have register beginning in the
summer and continue the registration through September. Being available to schedule
these students during the summer would be a better transition for the students. Waiting
until September decreases the delay of the number of students starting classes in
September.
• Review Transcripts. Transcripts need to be checked for accuracy before they are sent
out to the colleges/universities. This needs to be done the week after school ends. Final
transcripts should be mailed out to colleges/universities no later than July 15 to complete
the final step in the admission's process.
2. Middle Schools- minimum of 5 (five) days
The request is that six(6) counselors work 5(five) days each. The cost of this would be
$12,000 (5 days @ $400 per day = $2000; $2000 x 6= $12,000).
Mr. Fitzgerald is requesting 2 additional days for his counselors since Edison is now a statedesignated
focused school. Additional student identification will be needed for classroom
placement for Accelerated Math and Language Arts classes using Performance Matters, and
for those students who are economically disadvantaged as well. If Edison is switched back to
a 9-period day schedule, Mr. Fitzgerald is requesting a minimum of 10 days.

the new student since most transcripts are incomplete, etc.
• Master scheduling. The middle school counselors are responsible for every aspect of
scheduling on Power School. The counselors are the only ones who were trained and feel
comfortable using the program. Counselors need to adjust the master schedule to reflect
each building's new initiatives.
IEPs that have been changed by re-evaluations. Counselors need to make sure that these
students are in the right classes to stay in compliance.
• Top/Honors classes. Because the NJ ASK test is in May, we do not get our scores until
August counselors need to monitor and move students in/out of those recommended for
top/honors classes to adhere to the district's criteria.
3. Elementary Guidance Counselors - minimum of 3 days
The request is that seven(7) counselors work 3(three) days each. The cost of this would
be $8400 (3 days @ $400 per day = $1200; $1200 x 7 = $8400).
• Review and refine procedures for the I&RS and 504 Process in order to develop
consistency and continuity.
• Understand the RTI process since counselors will be very important with the
implementation of the process.
• With the implementation of the Bullying Law review issues and concerns that existed and
“summer terrace and garden” Review of Aist

Photo of Aist

excellent place to hang out in summer, especially the roof terrace in summer is somewhat unreal for Moscow, cool and fancy and lots of green around, and this in the very very center not far from pushkinskaya. kitchen is cool too, not cheap though)) and very nice cocktails .... expect no chance to grab a table on hot summer days

Served us warm oysters. And this was after the server had to check with the kitchen to see if there remained an of these delights. That evening I awaited the gastro surprise, but nothing happened...whew! Grilled octopus was inferior to that at Brix Wine Bar and twice as expensive. Downstairs, with all the smoke was packed. Upstairs, with the clean air, was empty. We sat upstairs with a view to the open kitchen. Wine selection is what I have learned to expect in Moscow, limited selection of reasonably priced wines, limited selection of outrageously priced wines. Very pretty place with attentive staff. I ordered the chef's special for that night, the roasted quail with spinach and it was dried out tough and unappealing. I wonder if the same kitchen serves downstairs and upstairs...because the folks downstairs seem to be having lots of fun while the two upstairs were looking at an evening of the Moscow restaurant formula: big investments in the interior, but not in the food... Bummer

It is always a fantastic dining experience, from both socializing and having absolutely amazing dining experience. Fish is great, but probably the best borsch soup I ever tried

There are several places that I normally prefer to go to, and some times this list changes. But not that one. Any time I think about quiet place with a perfect delicious dishes and nice ambiance, I think of Aist cafe. I enjoy very much sitting on the terrace up stairs, and I also enjoy the atmosphere on the first floor restaurant. I would change nothing there. Everything is on it's place. Staff is very friendly and professional, and they make you feel very comfortable. Aist is situated in the very centre of Moscow and in the same time it is in the very quiet place, and it is like you escaped from Moscow-traffic-jam's reality to the island of tranquility, style and peace, where you can relax and spend a time drinking cofe with the tiramisu, or eating some usually tipical spagetti but unbelievable tasty ones. I recommend this restaurant - it is nice, calm and relaxing with a really tasty dishes and perfect ambiance and service.

Been a few times, usually when guests in town. Be warned it is pricy for sure. Still have been there with just one friend once and all i can say is we had the best fun, tries great food + a bunch of different drinks. We had some fun that is for sure and were probably last to leave! After that night we both agreed we must come and come again :-) Another time i went with a group, we had really good fun, the food was very good & the wine flowed. We did sit outside & it was quite chilly. Still it is a place with good atmosphere and it gets interesting characters all te time, its a real see and be seen place. fun fun fun...
