An Aberdeen Medical Student’s Perspective

Name 3 reasons why you picked aberdeen.

Reason 1 – The early clinical exposure was the main reason I made Aberdeen my top choice. You have patient partners that you can practice your history taking and clinical skills on, right from term 1 of 1 st year! There are opportunities for placement from first year onwards as well! (subject to COVID). Reason 2 – To the best of my knowledge, Aberdeen is the only medical school to offer the Remote and Rural Option. You are given the choice to be based in Inverness (the Scottish Highlands) for your placements in Year 4 and Year 5. It’s an excellent opportunity to experience healthcare in a rural setting. Alternatively, if this sounds like something you wouldn’t want to do, you can opt to do only one block there, instead of all of them, just to get a feel of it. Reason 3 – Location was important to me and Aberdeen seemed to be perfect. It is quite small compared to other unis, but you have the beautiful mountains and countryside and amazing beaches so close to you. The city is also fairly busy with lines of shops, malls and many places for a night out so I found it to be ideal. The hospital is based in one of the biggest clinical sites in all of Europe, the medical school is right next to it and the city is also really close!

What makes Aberdeen unique to other medical schools?

The University of Aberdeen Medical School is one of the few that offer clinical exposure from the first year onwards, its one of the things that drew me here and made it my first choice. The Remote and Rural option, where you get to have placements in the highlands is a massive factor that pulled me in.  The SSC in third year gives you the chance to look at medicine with an alternative take – there’s so much you could do and the options are endless, ranging from taking art classes to mindfulness and forensics.  If you’re a graduate, Aberdeen is one of the only medical schools that doesn’t put a cap on the number of graduates. The summer research scholarship that’s open to medical students is an excellent opportunity if you’re into research.

Insider Guide: Aberdeen Interview Day

How does the aberdeen mmi interview day work.

The Aberdeen MMI was held virtually for the 2021-22 cycle via Blackboard Collaborate. If you have an online interview for whatever reason, you will need a strong wifi connection, quiet and brightly lit space and a webcam and microphone. Blackboard Collaborate works best on Google Chrome.

for 2023/24 entry, the interviews are expected to be in-person.

The interview will last approximately 1.5 hours.

Will I be able to pick my interview date and time?

Aberdeen will sent out interview invites to all successful candidates after which the student must select a date and time slot for the interview, keeping in mind that they will need to be available 30 minutes before the interview.

Interviews cannot be conducted outside the given slots or if a candidate misses their slot unless in the case os serious illness.

Are all candidates asked the same questions in the MMI?

Not necessarily. Aberdeen does not use the same set of MMI stations for all interviews. However, the MMIs are standardised for marking and the general themes and domains assessed will remain the same for all applicants.

How do you receive information for each Aberdeen MMI station?

You wouldn’t have any reading time for the virtual Aberdeen MMI. You are instead, given a set of domains that will be assessed and are expected to answer any questions related to these. It is therefore best to be prepared for a broad range of questions. However, there is no harm in pausing to think before you answer in any interview!

What are the Aberdeen Medicine MMI examiners like?

Aberdeen echoes an understanding of the anxiety that students may feel on the day of their interview and aims to reduce this with friendly and engaging examiners. Stations can be conversational. In the past, some interviewers have given feedback to applicants which is different from most medical schools where this is actively discouraged.

Did the Aberdeen MMI interviewers ask a lot of follow up questions?

Most stations will include follow-up questions, either from a pre-determined list of based on the conversation at hand. The latter are often quite positive as it means something has been said that has caught the assessors’ eye!

Is any pre-reading required for the Aberdeen MMI?

The Aberdeen MMI does not aim to test any clinical or scientific knowledge. However, a grasp of current events in Medicine is required, as with any medical school interview.

How long is the actual Aberdeen MMI Interview?

The interview should take no longer than 1.5 hours.

Logistical advice for the day?

For virtual interviews, ensure you have a quiet and bright space with a strong wifi connection and working camera and microphone. Ensure you will not be disturbed during your interview and avoid sitting in front of a bright light or window to prevent glare. Ideally, set up your interview space prior to the day and practice in that setting a few times to ensure comfort and logistical ease. If the university allows, it is helpful to have water to sip on throughout the interview.

As most of the interviews will be in-person this year, you will need to make sure that you arrive promptly and allow time to register and hand in any documents that have been requested.

As with any interview, ensure you dress formally, even if it’s virtual!

How long did it take you to hear back after your interview?

It takes a few weeks to hear back following the interview.

Top Tips for Aberdeen Medicine MMI Interview

1. Learn about NHS Scotland – There are a fair amount of differences between NHS Scotland, Wales and England so it’s worth knowing these to showcase your depth of understanding of the NHS. Furthermore, it can be useful when answering questions about Aberdeen’s course.

2. Learn about Aberdeen’s course – Aberdeen is quite focussed on why student’s apply to their school so it’s important to hone in on specifics, particularly its focus on rural health. Be specific with your reasoning. For example, find out what fields of research they’re known for and/or what societies are popular amongst their students and tie this into your career goals and hobbies.

3. Learn about rural medicine – Rural healthcare is a big and unique part of the Aberdeen course so a knowledge of and interest in this is crucial. Zoonosis and mental health rates are great places to begin!

4. Know your personal statement inside out – This helps particularly with the personal statement station of course, but provide a good set of condensed examples you can talk about, even if they haven’t read your personal statement. Use this to back up claims about your own skill-set and aid reflections.

5. Know exactly what drew you to apply to Aberdeen , there’s so much information about the course structure, SSC, the different programmes and other special features on their website. Aberdeen’s one of the only unis out there with so much detailed information on the medicine course. Read up on the societies, maybe there’s one that interests you and if you’re asked, you should be able to talk about it.

6. If there’s a station that you are finding difficult, feel free to tell the examiner that you didn’t understand the question. They are more than happy to repeat the question or explain what they meant. If at all the station doesn’t go as well as you expected it to, there’s nothing to worry about! Every station is scored separately, so do the next one with a free mind. Aberdeen is also one of the only universities that don’t rely completely on the interview to choose you as a candidate, they look at your academics too, so if you haven’t done well in your interview, there is nothing to worry about.

7. Don’t be stressed at all , nerves are common and everyone gets them but the interviewers are really so lovely, it feels more like a conversation than anything else. Maintain positive body language, smile and try and show them that you can remain calm and clear-headed when you are asked a question. Since it’s through a screen, the only way they can assess your body language is by looking at your face.

What’s it Really Like To Study Medicine at Aberdeen Medical School?

Welcome to the 5th week of the Virtual Medicine Open Day : giving you an insight into each of the UK medical schools and the opportunity to ask current medical students about the realities of studying there!

This post is written by “amedicsthoughts”, a 1st year medical student at Aberdeen University.

In my short time at Aberdeen University I have learned so much and I definitely feel like I made the right decision for me in terms of medical school. I hope this brief overview gives you an insight into the course and it will help you make a more informed decision on whether Aberdeen is right for you.

  • An Overview of Teaching Methods
  • Typical Timetable of a 1st year Medical Student at Aberdeen

The Non-Medical Stuff

3 top tips for applying to aberdeen.

  • Your turn to ask questions!

An Overview of How We Are Taught

Aberdeen uses a integrated systems-based approach. This means that the year is split into a number of blocks, each covering a specific system of the body e.g. in first year you learn about respiratory and cardiovascular. At the beginning of each block we are introduced to the physiology of the system (i.e. how that system SHOULD work) and then we learn about the pathophysiology and therapy (i.e. conditions that occur in that system and how to treat). This is all done in lecture style. Interspersed however are a number of smaller group teachings such as GP lead cases, problem solving sessions and clinical.

Aberdeen is unique in that from first year you are exposed to the clinical environment through their patient partner scheme. This involves volunteers from the community coming into our clinical centre and either letting students examine them or take a history. This is an amazing opportunity since as you go through the systems theoretically you can also put your knowledge into practice. For example, during the respiratory block I learned how to listen to lung sounds, percuss the front and back of chest and the correct inhaler technique, all with the help of a patient partner. We are also split into groups of 10-12 and are assigned a patient partner who has memorised a specific history (relevant to our lectures) and we take turns to take a history and then critique each other. It sounds quite scary especially the first few times, but already I feel so much more confident in front of “real” patients!

In terms of anatomy, at the beginning of each block we would have a few lectures on anatomy and embryology of that system. Then, we are given a workbook with sections to complete before each anatomy class. There are around 4 anatomy classes in which you are free to walk around the classroom and use the resources as you wish. Aberdeen uses prosecutions meaning everything is laid out and prepared for you to learn and feel. The classes aren’t really meant for “learning” as such, they are just to consolidate your answers from home and if there are questions there are anatomists and older students around to answer.

For placements we have 2 GP visits in first year, both to a practice pre-assigned. You also are given a group of 3 and must contact one of your practice’s patients (details are given to you) and arrange a home visit. At the end of the year in first year you also have 4 hospital/care home visits where you have the chance to take a history and examine a patient, then debrief to a group of classmates. This may not seem like much but as you progress through med school you have more and more placements, I think they just try to ease you in in 1 st  year!

When you reach “clinical years” i.e. years 4-5/6, the number of lectures dramatically decrease and you spend most of your time on placement. For most people this is in Aberdeen, however for those interested in rural medicine you can spend the whole of 4 th  year in Inverness (Highlands), learning how their hospital operates, rotating through several specialties.

A Typical Timetable of a 1st Year Medic

aberdeen university medicine personal statement

This is a pretty standard week for a first year especially at the beginning of each block you have quite a lot of contact hours. However, it does ease up somewhat so not each week is as busy!

I love Aberdeen as a city! Many people don’t see the appeal but when I came for my interview, I knew straight away that it was the perfect city for me. Its big enough that there are things to do all the time but not so big that it feels like a tourist city. There is the main shopping street plus three large shopping centres where me and my friends would go to shop and eat out (I recommend BarBurrito for cheap Mexican food + student discount). But there are also loads of little side streets with cafes, multicultural supermarkets and many, MANY hairdressers/beauty salons. In the city there are 6 large supermarkets (depending on where you live) and plenty of small ones dotted about. For sport you can go to the Aberdeen Uni Sports village which has just about every sport facility you can imagine.

At the medical school campus there is a café and “rec” room both where you can sit and eat. Also, you can walk 1 min down to the hospital where you can buy lunch from M&S or WHSmiths! There is also a library on campus in addition to the main Aberdeen uni library – Sir Duncan Rice found at the main campus.

Society wise you are spoiled for choice, from sport to travel to medicine there is something for everyone. If you don’t sign up to a society or don’t join, they often still post on Facebook about their events so if you want to come along it’s not a problem. MedSoc is the main medical society that put on the big events through the year, you can sign up at the start of the year however if you don’t you still have access to everything if you change your mind.

In terms of accommodation the university halls are located quite far out of the city, there is a free bus to the main and medical campus but its quite long and infrequent. I would recommend looking into private halls in Aberdeen such as student roost, unite students and liberty living. They are normally the same price as the uni halls however they are much more central and often a bit nicer! You also are put in with students from RGU and the college so you get to know more people out with your uni.

Pros of Studying at Aberdeen

• Early patient contact: this is so helpful especially for building your confidence in asking questions you would never normally ask strangers! Since you start building on these skills from almost week 1, already by the end of year 1 you are confident enough to go into the hospital and take a history from patients!

• Lots of clinical practice: as above this is super helpful in building confidence to get used to performing examinations on patients. This normally takes quite a bit of getting used to but the school lets you use the clinical rooms with your friends if your finding things difficult or you want more practice. However, I think in total we must have 12-15 clinical sessions per year all 2-3 hours long so plenty of time to learn

• Lots of opportunities to socialise “academically”: as well as lots of nights out and balls throughout the year, there are sooo many different societies and events put on by different students and doctors. If you are lucky enough to have a fresher’s week this year (pending covid-19), I would HIGHLY recommend going and taking time to look at all the societies you are even mildly interested in! This way you can still have access to the events going on but don’t have to be a member. Then through the year see which societies suit you and your academic interests!

Cons of Studying at Aberdeen

• Lots of contact hours: if you find that you rather do more work from home that at school you may find this course isn’t the best for you. As you can see above, most days you are in the whole day sometimes with 3-4hrs back to back of lectures! Personally, I don’t see this as a con as I work better at school and often if we have a couple hours between lectures, I would revise but I can see why it would be a lot for some people.

• Campus is out of the city : I know many med schools are like this and Aberdeen is no exception. Personally, I lived almost in the centre of town in first year and it would take me 45mins to get to school by bus compared to 20mins walk to the main campus. This year I’m hoping to find somewhere closer as running to the bus stop every morning isn’t really the best! However, if you have a car or don’t mind a longer commute in first year then it shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Focus on work experience – Aberdeen places more weight on the interview and grades rather than the UCAT. This was great for me as my UCAT was average but I had really good specific work experience which I could talk about and reflect on what I had seen/ heard. This doesn’t mean you need to have a large quantity of experience just make sure you have a couple of things you can reference in your personal statement and interview.

2. Practice your interview – related to the tip above, the interview is the most important thing to focus on after your grades. So, I would recommend finding a bank of questions that could be asked (lots online) and making a rough outline for what you would say for each. Don’t try to memorise an answer as this will come off as super rehearsed, but as long as you have an idea of what you’re going to talk about it will help a lot on the day.

3. Research the course THOROUGHLY – before applying and definitely before interviews make sure you know the structure of the course and the way its taught. Also, research the different opportunities you are given within your time at Aberdeen and if any particularly excite you, mention them!

Medicine personal statement example 19.

'Sorry nurse, but what's a leg bag?' I realise that this is one of the most important pieces of writing that I will have to produce and I find it exhilarating that it will hopefully aid me in my desire to become a doctor. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by human physiology.

From aches to x-rays I always found myself asking 'Why does that go wrong?' and 'How can it be fixed?' This desire to help heal the human body and a concern for others well-being, are the main reasons for my ambition to study medicine.

I have had some important and relevant work experience. For the past year, I have been accepted to help at my community hospital casualty fortnightly where I have had experience of procedures including: plaster casting, telemedicine, catheterisation and suturing. Working with the nurses has taught me the importance of teamwork and being sensitive towards patients.

In addition, I worked in the GP ward for a number of months where I fed and talked to elderly patients, becoming adept at leg bag changing.

From this, I have learnt that elderly people must be treated with respect and consideration. I am undertaking a Red Cross first aid course as I feel basic emergency techniques may not only help me as a doctor, but might prove valuable in everyday life. I have also been fortunate enough to shadow a consultant surgeon at ________ Royal Infirmary for 3 days.

This was an excellent experience - I was allowed to attend theatre and witness operations. I now understand the importance of gaining the trust of patients and to treat them as individuals, being honest with them at all times. The importance of this was reinforced by my week spent with a local GP, which also emphasised the holistic approach required in this profession.

My extra-curricular achievements include The Duke of Edinburgh Award - I have attained the Bronze award and enjoyed it so much that I am now tackling the Gold head on, aiming to complete it in June 2008. Among other things, the Scheme has shown me the importance of dealing with confrontation, which, in turn, has vastly improved my team-working skills. I was honoured to be Dux of _____ Academy for S5, which emphasised to me that hard work could be rewarded.

My other school activities include the 'Buddy System', which involves volunteering as a scribe for younger pupils and a 'Guardian' for new first years. This has improved my communication and interpretation skills, which are essential for a doctor. It has also taught me the importance of being responsible and accountable to others.

I was voted to present a production named 'Teachers' Come Dancing'. In this I stood in front of more than 700 pupils in tuxedo attire, welcoming various groups of dancers on stage. This boosted my confidence in speaking to large crowds and presenting the show has imprinted the importance of preparation and communicating information.

Finally, I have opted to run for house co-ordinator for our sixth year committee. This is a highly responsible job as it involves organising and speaking at assemblies and house events. I feel this would test my organisation and leadership skills even further.

My other interests include cycling, football and badminton, in all of which I have tried to achieve something valuable, over and above the benefits of personal fitness and team membership. I raised money for charity by cycling the 'Etape Caledonia' - a gruelling 81 mile cycle.

After finishing 3rd in my age group, this experience taught me persistence in the face of adversity. I have captained the school badminton team for the past 2 years, which has improved my leadership skills.

In football, I regularly play in a Friday league. Although we lose efficiently every week, this regular test of my optimism and dedication is character building!

Studying medicine will be a challenge I will relish. I am well motivated and determined to succeed with my recent clinical experiences only further fuelling my desire to become a doctor.

This was a labour of love I'll tell you! I'm pretty proud with the end result though, it brings out some of my personality - always very important with your PS. Don't be afraid to try a few small jokes. The examiners will be reading thousands, make them chuckle hehe.

I applied to Aberdeen, St Andrews, Dundee and Edinburgh, offers came from all but my heart lies with Aberdeen so I'm off to aberdeen in sepetember.

I hope it helps everyone in passing. I did my UKCAT yes...struggling to remember my scores...670, 680 and 720 i think...a little surprising when i thought that i'd made a balls of it.

Thu, 10/09/2009 - 10:28

Unis can't know ur lying just from reading it but any institutions you name will be contacted and asked for confirmation that you were there before they call you up for interview. Also if you do get an interview and they ask you about the work experience you have mentioned it will become obvious that you are bullshitting them quite quickly, these people are experts on body language.

Congrats on a great PS, i'm always being told not to put jokes in as evry1 has a different sense of humour and the last thing you want to do is piss off the examiner with a risque comment but you pulled it off brilliantly and i'm jealous of your ability to constuct such an amazing piece

Fri, 18/11/2011 - 16:47

'wow great statement. how did u manage to get so much work experience? any tips.........?'

I live in a small town in Scotland, so I just asked around at the local hospital and GP surgery. My dad's a GP and helped me get some experience in the bigger hospital theatres and stuff. To be honest, you can almost manipulate any work experience to make it sound like you gained something medically from it!

'What did you get for your GCSEs? I'm worried mine aren't good enough for Medicine'

I wouldn't worry about your GCSE's so much, use them to get into your AS and A level subjects, that's what the uni's look at most. I'm Scottish and they hardly ever look at our Standard Grades...so just do well in your A-levels :)

Can't believe this is still getting comments! Mid-way through 4th year now...s**t's getting real...oh dear. Good luck everyone.

Sun, 11/12/2011 - 20:11

Your use of humour definitely works here, I hate that people say not to put humour in!

This was a really enjoyable PS to read, most of them are really tedious and samey. Yours helped me a lot and I'm not even applying for Medicine!

Fri, 25/05/2012 - 10:47

I really want to do medicine, but i'm worried about my grades for this AS i have one exam left and I'm going to revise like crazy but I have to write my personal statement for medicine now, obviously, but when i get my AS results if they're not good enough i want to do Biomed then Medicine, would i be allowed to apply to biomes with a medical personal statement??? and this sounds ridiculous but i want to do medicine so badly, its the only thing i can see myself doing in the future but i can't put my desire down in words! does anyone else feel the same?

Fri, 14/09/2012 - 18:13

Hi everyone, almost finished

Thu, 28/03/2013 - 21:34

Hi everyone, almost finished 5th year now and just applied for FY1 jobs...dear lord.

Anyways, I thought I should reply to some comments, not that they'll ever read them again, but you never know...

"I really want to do medicine, but i'm worried about my grades for this AS ... i want to do medicine so badly, its the only thing i can see myself doing in the future but i can't put my desire down in words! does anyone else feel the same?"

- When it comes to Biomed, I think it might depend on where you apply as to whether you need a personal statement. I'm not sure using a medical PS for Biomed is the right way to go about it. Personally I would tweak my statement to appeal to the Biomed guys, you don't want them thinking you're just using their degree as a middle man to get to Medicine (which happens all the time). Ooze enthusiasm for Biomed and talk about ambition of science and if you want to give a hint at Medicine, maybe you could mention a bit about physiology or something? Not really sure.

"Marry me?"

- Whilst your offer is flattering, I'm afraid I'm spoken for. If things go belly up, however, I know where my first port of call will be.

Tue, 23/07/2013 - 20:40

I truly appreciate this blog post. Thanks Again. Really Cool.

racist university

Sat, 16/11/2013 - 01:46

I'm an Asian medical student and never would I thought that this university has a few racist people (lecturer/doctors). Let me tell you a case of mine.

During my 4th year OSCE exam, I had this one examiner who failed me the previous year in one of my blocks (GP). Guess what when my OSCE result came back? I failed in that OSCE station!

I told one of my Norwegian friends and he is of Pakistani origin and he told me that he just hate that same doctor causes that doctor used to fail him too during his 3rd year.

I have no doubt to tell you the truth that he is Dr Graham Summers. I would like to warn you that I have seen other racist doctors who never entertains you or have no keen to teach 'non-white' students' and that includes the Dean of Medical School.

During my 4th year project, my supervisor did not even bother to help me and then he and she gave me a very bad review that resulted in me being terminated. To make things worst, the Dean of medical school REFUSED TO SEE me and I was not given proper advice/consultation for my appeal.

I advice that you better stay away from this uni especially if you are asian.

Features of the macrostructure and microstructure of uranium dioxide powders are considered. Assumptions are made on the mechanisms of the behavior of powders of various natures during pelletizing. Experimental data that reflect the effect of these powders on the quality of fuel pellets, which is evaluated by modern procedures, are presented. To investigate the structure of the powders, modern methods of electron microscopy, helium pycnometry, etc., are used. The presented results indicate the disadvantages of wet methods for obtaining the starting UO 2 powders by the ammonium diuranate (ADU) flow sheet because strong agglomerates and conglomerates, which complicate the process of pelletizing, are formed. The main directions of investigation that can lead to understanding the regularities of formation of the structure of starting UO 2 powders, which will allow one to control the process of their fabrication and stabilize the properties of powders and pellets, are emphasized.

How I Aced My University of Aberdeen Interview

Katarzyna Minta wowed University of Aberdeen during their Medical School interview and was offered a place. In this blog, they share how they prepared for their interview so you can benefit from their experience.

By Katarzyna Minta

Aberdeen uses MMI interviews which meant I had to impress the majority of interviewers and be able to adapt to different scenarios/stations! Here is how I did it:

I Researched Aberdeen Medical School

Getting to know the Medical School inside out is the key here. Aberdeen offers lots of different and unique opportunities, such as early patient contact or the opportunity to attend the remote and rural placement in Inverness.

I found out about some special aspects of the course at the University of Aberdeen from the official website. It gave me a great insight into some distinguishing features of the Medicine programme and structure which I could potentially speak about during my interview.

I Have Made A List Of Doctor’s Top Qualities

In order to prepare for every station in the most effective manner, I have made a list of Doctor’s top qualities such as leadership, communication skills and empathy . I also made another column with some examples from my work experiences and reflected on them .

This list helped me structure my thoughts in a coherent manner. As soon as I wrote down a few qualities supported by reflections from my work experience, I was prepared to adjust these to any question that I was faced with during my MMI which made my answers more interesting and well thought out.

I Practised A Lot

In order to reduce the stress before the interview, I believe that practising different questions and recording the answers would help me focus on my weaknesses instead of my strengths. You can practise either in front of your mirror, with family or friends, or by recording yourself on a video. Treat these like mock interviews and make sure you observe your verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as they are both equally significant for the interview. Make sure to adopt a structure to your answers in order for you to provide clear and coherent reasoning in your answers.

I Was Conscious About My Stress

It’s normal to feel stressed on the day of your interview. It’s important to be aware of your stress levels so that you can understand how to control it better. For me, I felt less stressed when I practised for my interview regularly.

On top of that, it’s important to remind yourself that everyone is in the same boat and everyone feels stressed. Don’t let your emotions get in the way of not being able to provide coherent answers to the questions.

If one station doesn’t go well, it’s important not to get too bogged down on the previous station. As hard as it sounds, try and go to the next station with a clear head instead of thinking of what mistakes you made.

I Prepared For Specific Timings

For MMI interviews, you usually have one minute of reading time before entering the station. Make sure to use this wisely and structure your answer in your head beforehand, so that you are able to present your reasoning when you enter the station.

MMIs itself are usually only a few minutes long, which is why it’s important to adopt a specific structure and practise presenting your answers in line with these strict timings. If you don’t practise enough, you may find yourself running out of time on the day of your MMI interview. Knowing the specific timings, it is important to make sure you demonstrate the most significant points that you would like to talk about and do not go into too much detail.

I Researched MMI Stations

For my MMI interview at the University of Aberdeen, I researched the official website in the hope of pinpointing some MMI stations which could come up on the day. From the official website, there are six main topics that could come up in your MMI :

  • motivation to study Medicine
  • critical thinking and problem solving
  • core qualities of a Doctor
  • professionalism
  • Personal Statement

I was able to tailor my interview preparation in line with these topics, which helped me narrow my interview prep .
