1. Complete prior research (if necessary)

You don’t necessarily need a master’s degree to start a PhD. However, you do need to have completed extensive research. Study requirements

The study expectations of PhD by distance mode students are the same as on-campus students. This means that you will:

• need to meet the same admissions requirements , including English-language proficiency
• be supported by a panel of supervisors
• complete any mandatory coursework
• go through the same candidature stage assessments as other PhDs from your faculty
• be subject to the same student rules that govern PhD study at UTS
• have the same expected timelines for your study as other PhD students

Studying here is a dream many students want to pursue. 2. Charles Sturt University

Charles Sturt University offers hundreds of courses spread across five welcoming campuses. Pursue any one of them, and you stand to get jobs faster than graduates from any other Australian university, according to QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey 2021. They earn an average of A$70,000 straight after graduating. If your campus is in a regional area, you could be eligible for extended post-study work rights too.

3. Federation University Australia

Federation University Australiaederation University Australia (FedUni) is Victoria’s premier regional university. It’s rated the number one university in Victoria for the way it supports students and develops their skills. It’s also number one in Victoria for helping its graduates find full-time employment.

That’s not all. FedUni is the alma mater of Australia’s leaders, innovators and thinkers for 150 years. ranked in the top 100 worldwide for Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities and Gender Equity. Southern Cross University (SCU)  has established multiple campuses in New South Wales, South East Queensland, Lismore and Coffs Harbour. 

The university’s undergraduate and graduate programmes are spread across six schools, two colleges, and two research centres. This includes the School of Health and Human Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Arts and Social Sciences, the School of the Environment, the School of Science and Engineering, the School of Business and Tourism, the School of Law and Justice, the SCU College, and the Center for Peace and Society. Is Australia good for PhD?

There are many reasons to pursue a PhD program in Australia. With the unique research opportunities and cutting-edge facilities the country has to offer, it’s a place to earn a PhD that can really make a difference. 

The other common motivations for international students to choose Australia for their PhD in Australia include: 

• Reputable research centers and universities with 15 of the leading HEI in the country in the top 250 globally.
• Interesting funding options from the Australian government or universities. Therefore, students are unlikely to pay the entirety of their PhD fees most of the time. In other words, more time to study and less to worry about study and living costs .

Structure of doctoral studies in Australia

A PhD research in Australia has the same structure as a PhD research in most popular study destinations. It usually consists of a pure research where students mainly work on their doctoral thesis.

The PhD program may also include courses units to give students the skills they need to successfully conduct research. Working on your thesis usually starts with a literature review to evaluate the existing data related to your topic.

Next, you’ll work on your research doing source material analysis, collecting survey data, producing experimental results… Lastly, you’ll move on to writing your thesis, summarizing your research findings.

Moreover, PhD students always work with the support of a supervisor, from the application stage to the submission of the doctoral thesis.

Assessment and examination

At the end of their PhD, students would have to submit a thesis of approximately 100,000 words. Some study subjects may require students to provide a practical presentation or project alongside their thesis. 

Unlike in other countries, a PhD in Australia does not require an oral examination or thesis defense. Instead, 2 or 3 experts in the student’s field of study will assess their work. They will then examine the thesis and send a written report to the university in a few months.

Since this step may take several months, it’s possible to agree to a deadline in advance. Moreover, in the rare cases where Australian universities organize a viva voce, the examination usually takes place online (via video conference) instead of a face-to-face interview.

How many years is a PhD in Australia?

There is this one thing about PhDs that it can easily become overwhelming if you don’t fix an end date beforehand. But you should expect to complete a full-time PhD between 3 and 4 years in Australia. 

It can take more time depending on the object of your research and any obstacles you might come up with along the way. Part-time PhD on the other hand may take up to 6 years to complete. 

However, this format usually is not available for international students. In fact, one condition to obtain a student visa in Australia is that you must study full-time.  

What are the requirements to do PhD in Australia for international students?

To apply for a PhD program in Australia, you don’t necessarily need a master’s degree. You just need a first proven experience in conducting research. And a bachelor’s degree usually requires you to complete an extensive research project to graduate.

In general, each university sets its own requirements and application process. But you should nonetheless provide your: 

• Academic records
• Previous degrees certificates
• ID (a passport)
• English language proficiency proof (usually IELTS/ TOEFL/PTE scores)
• Letters of recommendation
• References (academic and/or professional ones)
• Statement of purpose / Research proposal

Some universities may wish to interview you for your PhD, that generally takes place online. Make sure then to get ready and make the arrangement via a video-conferencing platform. 

Another crucial step is also to find a PhD supervisor to supervise your research. This person should guide you through all the process, from the application to the thesis submission, so make sure to choose carefully. The right PhD supervisor should be someone who fully understands your research and has appropriate expertise.

PhD in Australia cost

Tuition fees for a PhD in Australia are relatively higher compared to what apply in other countries. However, thanks to many funding and scholarships available, so there’s a good chance that students won’t have to pay the entirety of the tuition fee.  

The Australian government estimates the cost of an international doctoral degree to be between AUD $20,000 and AUD $50,000 per year. This is the amount you should have available if you apply for a research project without a funding attached. 

But the good news is that many Australian PhD research projects are pre-funded. This is especially the case in majors such as science, engineering, medicine and technology. So if you haven’t yet chosen your project, this might be a way to pay for your PhD at a more affordable cost.  

Fully funded PhD in Australia for international students 

PhD funding in Australia is available through either scholarships from Australian universities or research training program funding. There are also scholarship opportunities from the Australian government.

Promising students have the opportunity to get fully-funded PhD spots at the research universities in Australia. Other institutions such as institutes of technology and private colleges also have PhD programs as well. There are over 100 universities offering PhD degrees in Australia you can choose from.

Your fees explained, research training program (rtp) fee offset scholarship.

The University of Melbourne offers a range of scholarship for students undertaking graduate research training. These scholarships are funded by the University, philanthropic gifts or Government grants.

All domestic students who are admitted to a Master by research or Doctoral degree at the University of Melbourne will receive a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to acknowledge the contribution from the Australian Government towards the cost of their tuition.

Other scholarships may provide a stipend towards the cost of living and a relocation allowance. International students may also receive Overseas Student Health Cover and a tuition fee offset.

Scholarships

An American waitress has gone viral after vowing to “never serve Australians again” – but her lengthy rant about the difference between our tipping cultures has backfired spectacularly.

Alexis Zarya was left furious after waiting on a table of “cheap” Aussies currently on holiday in the US.

After racking up at $200 bill, the family paid in full, but didn’t leave Alexis a tip for her services – a common US practice.

This sent the waitress spiralling, prompting her to post a video on social media detailing her earnings while also condemning her international customers, and telling them to “get with it.”

But Australian users were quick to clap back, pointing out the apparent flaws with the U.S. tipping culture, and claiming her video was “rude”.

“Sounds like a problem y’all need to address to your government, not Australians,” one scoffed.

“We don’t tip in Australia, especially not for rude workers,” another lamented.

Someone else agreed: “With that attitude I would have deducted money.”

Alexis’ earnings for five hours work proved to be another sticking point for Australian viewers, as she revealed she’d earned way above both country’s average minimum wage.

“I made $83 for my hourly, and $150 in tips,” she said in the viral  video .

“So I made $46 an hour.”

When converted to Australian dollars, that is around 70 bucks for sixty minutes work.

The National Minimum Wage here is $23.23 per hour or $882.80 per week, while in the US, it is $7.25 (about $A11) per hour.

“You made $16.60 before tips. That’s the equivalent of 25 Australian. That’s the average wage over here, and we don’t get tips. I think you’re doing OK,” one pointed out.

“In Australia, they earn about $30/h for service. There’s no tips unless you are amazing,” agreed another.

Others suggested the Aussies “genuinely didn’t know” about the difference in tipping cultures, adding if it is so important, the restaurant should display a sign.

“Why should they tip when you are already getting paid?” one asked.

“It’s prob not intentional, we don’t do that here in Aus, so we find it hard to think to do it,” argued one woman.

Another added: “That meal was expensive. To demand a tip is unreasonable.”

“Crazy that a tip is an expectation,” mused someone else.

However, there were some who defended the waitress, stating it was “poor form” not to respect other cultures when travelling.

“If you go overseas, you gotta make an effort to be aware of cultural differences,” one said.

“Travellers should do better when visiting other countries,” agreed another.

“No excuses for being ignorant,” someone else scathed.

A petrol station is offering fuel for 99 cents per litre for just two hours, with drivers told to brace for queues as hundreds are expected to take advantage of the bargain price.

Metro Petroleum on Bellevue Road in Figtree, in Wollongong’s inner west, is the latest location to slash prices for just two hours.

Motorists will be able to get the discounted fuel between 3pm and 5pm on Tuesday, May 14.

It is part of a promotion between rewards club Dreams Come True (DCT) and Metro Petroleum.

The deal kicked off last week at Metro Petroleum in Punchbowl in Sydney’s southwest, causing queues of cars to stack up.

Aerial shots from 7News showed a traffic jam.

One ute driver in the queue said he had 10 jerry cans he was going to fill up, while another brought one 600L tank.

Another man was seen getting fuel for his lawnmower.

Before the sale period, unleaded petrol was advertised at the service station for 192.7c.

DCT had initially said they would run the promotion at different locations on the first Tuesday of each month, in line with the Reserve Bank of Australia’s cash rate decision, but were so pleased with the success they are doing another one this week.

DCT is a paid membership program to get discounts with its partners, but the fuel promotion is available to everyone.
