This course is designed to address the importance of organizational change. The need for change, planning for change, implementing change, and evaluating change will be discussed from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives.

EDL-7211 Policy Analysis (non K-12)

This course is intended to provide an overview of policy issues, policy development, policy analysis and policy implementation processes through an examination of the theoretical and practical applications related to policy considerations in organizations and institutions for non-K12 candidates.

FPR-7300 Philosophy of Scientific Knowledge

Study of the philosophical and theoretical foundations of education and leadership, including analysis of the aims and goals of education, processes of attainment, content and curriculum, and the socialization function of education, schooling and complex organizations. Develop an understanding of the intersections between theory/philosophy, ethical perspectives, and the development of policy, practice and institutions.

RES-7605 Quantitative Analysis

An introduction to the quantitative analysis of data; including data coding and entry of data. SPSS will be used to explore descriptive and inferential statistics: using both non‐parametric and initial parametric techniques.

RES-7700 Qualitative Research

An examination of qualitative research approaches with a focus on research design, the role of the researcher, data collection and analysis, and writing from a qualitative perspective.

RES-7800 Mixed Methods Research

Principles of research theory, methods, inquiry, problem formulation, data collection, literature searches and ethical considerations. Emphasis on how to design a doctoral-level research study.

RES-7900 Research Design

Res-7620 advanced topics in statistics or res-7710 advanced qualitative analysis.

An introduction to advanced statistical concepts including multivariate analysis, linear models, hierarchical linear models, factor analysis and data management will be covered in this course. Students will use published software packages and will learn to write basic syntax for custom analysis. Prerequisite: B or higher in RES-7605.

This course provides advanced introductions to a representative range of qualitative methods. It is designed to familiarize doctoral and advanced master’s students with the commonly used qualitative research methods. The course will prepare them to further understand philosophies and concepts of qualitative methods, to utilize these methods in their own research, or to evaluate the qualitative work that others have done. This course also teaches how to use qualitative software as an analytic tool to analyze qualitative data. Prerequisite: B or higher in RES-7700.

Comprehensive Exam and Dissertation

COMP-7000 Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive exam is a written exam in two parts that is administered in Blackboard. The purpose of the exam is to evaluate a) the content knowledge and students’ ability to apply that knowledge to address a problem in the field, and b) students’ ability to formulate a scholarly argument based on a literature review on a topic of students’ choice. Successful completion of the comprehensive exam is a major step that leads to admission to doctoral candidacy in the Concordia University Chicago doctoral programs. Prerequisite: B or higher in RES-7900. Pass/Fail only.

Diss-7020 dissertation ii.

Scholarly work on a dissertation as approved by the dissertation committee. Prerequisite: P in COMP-7000 or COMP-7100, and DISS-7010. Pass/Fail only.

Reviews major types of gerontological theory within the context of theoretical paradigms. This course explores the differences and commonalities within the various theoretical strands of knowledge construction within gerontology.

GERO-7500 The Physiology of Aging

Presents an in-depth analysis of the biology of aging, building up from changes occurring at the molecular and cellular level and analyzing the consequences at the organism level. Examines the influence of these age-related changes in what are commonly considered a disease of aging.

GERO-7505 The Psychological Aspects of Aging

Examines psychological development and change across the adult lifespan. Using frameworks of developmental psychology, this course reviews and explores adult development in the broad domains of cognition, personality and socio-emotional functioning. Issues related to normative and optimal adult development and aging are considered.

GERO-7560 Sociocultural Aspects of Aging

Presents a socio-cultural perspective on the aging process. This course examines social and cultural factors that influence aging and the nature of the integration of older adults into society, as well as the way in which population aging affects the larger society.

GERO-7800 Demography and Epidemiology of Aging

Explores fertility, mortality and global aging; distribution of health and illness within a population; age-based migration and its impact on locations of origin and destination; variations in health and mortality by gender, race, ethnicity and social class; impact of health and mortality patterns for individuals, society and public policy.

GERO-7805 Issues in Aging Policy

Explores the development, implementation and analysis of social policy in the United States on major issues affecting older people. Considers the determinants of aging policy. The policymaking process and development of legislation are analyzed as factors related to the making of policy for older adults.

GERO-7810 Foundation of Teaching and Learning in Gerontology

Exploration and application of teaching and learning strategies for communicating gerontological knowledge. This course addresses teaching gerontology in classroom settings as well as in public settings to a variety of audiences in applied and policy settings.

GERO-7820 Leadership, Applied Ethics, Aging and Global Change

Examines the ethical dilemmas of leadership, the foundations and context of moral choice, and the moral implications of decision-making as they relate to gerontological leadership. Considers the ethical challenges and decision criteria facing leaders, the role of politics and power in organizations and the leader’s ability to promote and infuse organizational ethics and integrity in an aging and globalized world.

GERO-7900 Diversity in Aging Societies

Explores how ethnicity, race and gender structure the lives of individuals throughout the life course and how other factors such as age, cohort and class intersect with these realities. This course considers how the lives of people differ across diverse strata and how social policies shape individuals’ lives.

GERO-7905 Professional Seminar in Gerontology

Applies and integrates knowledge gained in earlier courses and strengthens skills necessary to claim identity as a gerontologist. Doctor of Philosophy in Geroscience (PhD)

The doctoral program in Geroscience is designed for students who want to become leaders in biogerontology. The focus is on molecular, cellular, and regenerative medicine as well as the integrative biology of aging. The doctoral program in gerontology is an intercampus, interdisciplinary research degree program at the university of maryland baltimore (umb) and university of maryland, baltimore county (umbc)..

The program provides an interdisciplinary and integrative perspective on the process of human aging and the experiences of growing old. The PhD in Social Work with a Dual-Title in Gerontology addresses the critical need for social work faculty and researchers trained in geriatrics who can promote evidence‐based practices and serve as role models for future generations of social workers specializing in the field. The program enhances student knowledge of the diversity of older adults in terms of race, culture, socioeconomic status, and psychosocial and physical health status, and the consequences aging in political, economic, and program administration contexts. The program promotes interdisciplinary collaboration as a key element of geriatric social work by providing comprehensive gerontological research, competencies and scholarly skills.

Dual-Title in Gerontology application deadline is December 18. Students start the following fall semester

Pre-requisites

Doctoral applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or its equivalent in upper-division coursework.

Dual-title students take the same coursework as other PhD students, with the following requirements:

• Students select gerontology as their cognate and select 9 credits from a list of approved gerontology courses
• Students select a gerontology-focused substantive exam and dissertation under the direction of a gerontology faculty member

The Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program offers multiple options for students from any academic major to engage in the study of aging within the University of Utah College of Nursing . A Master's in gerontology provides additional breadth and depth of knowledge in this academic area. Students from a diverse array of colleges and departments at the University of Utah, such as architecture, social work, finance, and theater, benefit from a stronger understanding of the aging process – the physical, mental and social changes in people as they age.  Our Gerontology online courses are open to all university students.

The program’s asynchronous online learning format makes these program options ideal for working professionals, those living at a distance, or others who need the flexibility that online certification and degree programs offer.

The Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program administers educational offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Admission Requirements

The Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program admits students once a year. The following are the minimum requirements needed to apply for the Gerontology Interdisciplinary MS Program:

• Completed application for graduate admission. Apply here .
• Transcripts from ANY and ALL colleges and universities attended, including the University of Utah, must be uploaded as part of the graduate application.
• Evidence of a bachelors degree from a regionally accredited university or college
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale
• A current resume or curriculum vitae
• Three professional references
• Personal statement
• International Students:  Due to the online nature of this program we are not allowed to accept international applications. 

Applicants should note that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program Master's Degree. Applicants are evaluated according to university and departmental requirements.

Degree Requirements

The Gerontology program requires completion of a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Note that in addition to the completion of the core curriculum requirements, there are also elective courses, a 150-hour practicum and a Master’s Project or Thesis. All requirements for the Master's degree are fulfilled by completing the 11 courses illustrated in the programs of study.

Applications are reviewed by both the University of Utah Office of Graduate Admissions and the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program Advisory Committee. Successful applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements for, and be accepted by, both the graduate school and the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program.

Johns Hopkins graduate programs again ranked among nation's best

'u.s. news & world report' includes 38 jhu programs among the top 10 in the u.s. in its annual rankings, including no. 1 ranked programs in nursing and public health.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

• Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
• Family: No. 3 (tied)
• Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
• Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

• Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
• Epidemiology: No. 1
• Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
• Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
• Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

• Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
• Cell biology: No. 4
• Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
• Immunology: No. 5
• Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
• Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

• Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
• British literature: No. 10 (tie)
• American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

U.S. News reveals 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings

The University of Illinois Chicago continues to earn high marks for its graduate programs, most recently in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings.

The rankings, released April 9, evaluated programs in various disciplines such as business, education, law and nursing. Several UIC programs were ranked among the top 20 in the country in their respective fields.

UIC programs among the nation’s top 20 include the College of Nursing’s doctor of nursing practice program (14th), the nursing master’s degree program (19th) and graduate-level disciplines in the College of Pharmacy (tied for 15th) and the School of Public Health (tied for 18th).

The master’s degree program for social work in the Jane Addams College of Social Work tied for 28th among programs at 319 evaluated schools. Among public affairs graduate programs, the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs programs tied for 34th nationally, up two spots from 2023.

Due to data-related inquiries from some graduate schools during the initial embargo period, U.S. News delayed releasing its 2024 rankings for the Best Medical Schools, Best Engineering Schools and Best Clinical Psychology programs. A publication date for those rankings has not been released.

U.S. News ranked several specialty programs at UIC among the top 50 nationally.    

In the College of Applied Health Sciences, the occupational therapy program tied for third, and physical therapy tied for 41st.

College of Nursing-based specialties that were ranked include gerontology nurse practitioner (tied for sixth) and midwifery (16th).

In the College of Education, the specialty of education administration placed 16th, and curriculum and instruction tied for 24th.

The School of Public Health’s specialties in health policy management and social behavior tied for 20th and 22nd, respectively.

UIC School of Law’s program in legal writing tied for 20th, up five spots from last year, and its trial advocacy program tied for 31st. UIC’s part-time law program tied for 40th in the country.

Four specialty programs based in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs ranked by U.S. News were urban policy (ranked sixth), public finance (ranked eighth), local government management (tied for 13th) and leadership (tied for 33rd). 

UIC programs ranked among the top 100 are computer science (tied for 61st), education (tied for 71st) and the part-time MBA program (73rd).

Not all programs are ranked yearly, although the U.S. News Best Graduate Schools publication and website present the most recent rankings for every program.

The 10 top online nurse practitioner programs of 2024.

Completing an online nurse practitioner program puts current registered nurses (RNs) on track to a higher-paying career . Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice nurses who focus their careers in specific areas of nursing, such as acute care, adult gerontology, pediatrics, family nursing, and psychiatric mental health.

Nurses can become certified as nurse practitioners after completing a graduate-level program: either a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) . You can complete either degree online.

Georgetown University offers a 44-hour online family nurse practitioner program that prepares students for the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board exam. The Jesuit-based curriculum provides a holistic family health perspective, incorporating spiritual, physical, and mental health perspectives. 

The program trains students to provide family-focused primary care, in a clinical setting, from newborns to geriatric patients. The seven-term course requires 650 clinical practicum hours and two in-person clinical intensives.

• Programs: Family nurse practitioner, adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner, nurse-midwifery/women's health nurse practitioner (NM/WHNP), and women's health nurse practitioner (WHNP).

2. University of Southern California, Los Angeles

The University of Southern California offers an online master of science in nursing family nurse practitioner program at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work Department of Nursing. The program is for RNs with a bachelor of science in nursing degree, where working students can opt for a 33-month part-time or a 21-month full-time schedule. 

USC's family online nurse practitioner program prepares students for board certification that allows them to work in primary care with patients through the lifespan. The curriculum includes courses in diagnosing and treating routine health issues, medication prescriptions, lab and X-ray results, and wellness promotion.

USC offers a clinical placement team to help students procure clinical sites near them. Students must also complete two Los Angeles-area, on-campus intensives.

• Campus: Los Angeles, California
• Tuition: $5,656 per semester for part-time, in-state residents; $9,755 per semester for part-time, out-of-state residents

A graduate-level bridge course may be required for students with a "C+" or lower grade in the sciences or for those with transcripts older than five years.

3. Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY

The Stony Brook University School of Nursing offers several online concentrations for master of science in nursing students planning to become nurse practitioners. These specialties include adult-gerontology primary care, adult-gerontology acute care, family health, women's health, neonatal health, pediatric primary care, pediatric acute care, psychiatric mental health, and nurse-midwifery. Each track offers unique programming and is aimed at preparing nurses to provide primary care for various specialties.

Nurses learn to diagnose, assess, and manage various symptoms and conditions, with the ability to provide primary care once they are board-certified. The Office of Clinical Placements assists students in setting up clinical practicums.

Family nurse practitioners care for patients throughout their lifespan. The full-time program requires a minimum of six credits per semester and 600 clinical practicum hours total. The course content is delivered asynchronously online. An orientation and virtual skills workshop is required.

5. George Washington University, Washington D.C.

George Washington University offers an online 22-credit-hour master of science in nursing psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program. The curriculum focuses on theories of behavioral change (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy), learning, motivation, and neurobiology.

Once students have taken and passed the state board exam, they can legally assess, diagnose, and manage mental health conditions for patients throughout their lifespan. A required on-campus course prepares nurses for taking patient histories and performing physical exams. The program offers RNs an opportunity to expand their scope of practice and qualify for advanced careers in the mental health field.

An entry-level BSN-to-DNP track is available for all online nurse practitioner programs at GWU. The online DNP nurse practitioner course is a hybrid program with online classes and on-campus training requirements.

After board certification, family nurse practitioners receive a license to employ evidence-based prevention and treatment practices. Four on-campus experiences are required. 

The clinical practicum requirement is 600 hours. A clinical placement coordinator is available to help learners secure the best clinical placement near the student's local geographic area.
