How can a teacher’s personality influence learning?

how can a teacher's personality influence learning

“A great teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart.”

Teachers are the role models for the students. A modern-day teacher has gone beyond giving marks, lectures, making exams, and teaching. A teacher’s job is to influence and create a solid foundation for the future of society. With their teaching styles, they leave a lasting impression on the students. A teacher, either through positive or negative attitude in communication, affects the child. The approach of the teacher to students is related to their growth.

A teacher plays an important role in the student’s personality development. When the teacher asks questions, shows interest, understands their thoughts, and appreciates, it increases their motivation. Giving feedback for their work, complimenting, and wanting to listen helps them. Non-verbal actions and gestures like smiling improve the students learning development. When the teacher supports the student, it makes a lot of difference in his personality. Students whose teachers displayed positive attitudes will have a positive attitude.

Let us find out how the teacher’s attitude and behavior affect the student’s learning?

The teacher’s personality plays a crucial role

The personality of the teacher cannot be separated from the teaching and the thinking. A teacher’s behavior reflects his personality. His behavior should be open-minded and confident. So if the personality of the teacher is powerful and strong, the students will benefit. A good teacher is the one who can weave a web of connections between themselves, students, and subjects. They know their subjects well and prepare them with a variety of examples. They bring to life their subjects and make them vivid and imaginative.

Teachers personality 1

The characteristics that make a great teacher are:

  • Strong communication skills to build a teacher-student relationship.
  • Friendly teaching style to foster adaptiveness.
  • Impeccable listening skills to develop a bond with students.
  • Deep understanding of the subject and knowledgeable.
  • Excellent organization skills to manifest growth.
  • Community building skills that create oneself.

Influence or Impact on the student

A teacher’s attitude can help or hurt a student’s achievements and state of mind. Studies show that a negative teacher can impair academic achievements. It also hampers the mental growth of the student and increases stress. Teachers who are humiliating and sarcastic are harmful. They instil fear and leave a child feeling belittled. Teachers who are harsh and loud tend to lower the child’s self-esteem. They work against the basic principle of growth of a child.

Personality of teacher

Those who show indifference to the child may leave a lingering feeling of negativity. The students may feel overwhelmed by the bad remarks of the teacher. Teachers who nag students, underestimate them may leave them with lower self-esteem. Some teachers are quick to react and have a bad temper. The students will hate them, and they will be less approachable. Some teachers are rigid; they take everything seriously and never accept mistakes. This behavior will hurt the students. Some students may even emulate such teachers and become one of them.

Effective methods to work on

The teacher’s goal is to ensure what they want to teach and find a path to get there. For this, the teacher has to take the student’s abilities into consideration. They have to master the skills of being patient and taking care of their needs. To ensure that the student understands better, not get stressed while learning. They have to motivate them constantly and take care of their needs. Give them lots of encouragement and avoid unnecessary insults. To focus more on the struggling students and shaping their future. Tapping their inner strength and allowing them to grow into finer human beings.

effective method

Another good method is to call their parents when they did something positive and showed off their good work. Allowing them to open up by being liberating with them. Treat them with dignity and respect. Some teachers have an attitude problem. They expect the students to follow them blindly without any motivation. When the teacher does that, the student suffers. The teachers are driven by ‘How can I get better at this?’ which make tons of difference. Another effective way to consider is how much does the teacher want to learn, improve and grow? This is the key to a good teacher.

Teaching is both a science and an art. The teacher can make teaching more enjoyable and constructive. The best teachers are those who can maximize the learning potential of the student in a classroom.

Furthermore, fruitful results will be obtained if he considers himself not just an instructor who teaches. But also the one who cares about the needs of the students and behaviour. Teachers who try to perform their job righteously and devote their time are crucial. The teachers that can balance patience and discipline will go a long way.

As rightly stated by Brad Henry, “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.”

An Ideal Teacher Essay

Teachers are essential to the educational process. They are those who dedicate their entire life to passing on knowledge to the next generation. They are crucial for societal progress and for preserving the future of the following generation. They are not flawless, therefore we shouldn't be disappointed in them if they fail to accomplish things the way we want them to. To maintain the learning and growth process for all sides, students and teachers must work together. Every educator strives to develop their individual abilities and talents. Developing your teaching method or style is just the first step on the journey to becoming the ideal teacher. It is also related to improving relationships with students.

Being the best teacher sometimes requires adjusting some aspects of one's personality to suit the students and motivate them to learn. It might also involve changing how you perceive your work. Knowledge would be the most crucial quality in an ideal teacher. They can assist students with any questions because they are typically knowledgeable in their field. They would regularly keep themselves updated on developments in their field of study and read more research-based material on it. They would be enthusiastic about their subject, and the students would be inspired to perform well in class as a result. A teacher who is empathetic will be able to connect with their students and help them learn and grow.

By listening carefully and getting to know students as individuals, teachers can develop the empathy they need to be successful in the classroom. An ideal teacher has an impartial approach toward every student, regardless of their level of learning, which inspires confidence in them. This gives both slow and quick learners the same learning possibilities. Another key component of what makes someone a good teacher is their ability to engage students through humour, unique lessons, and a strong presence in the classroom. An ideal teacher will model for their students in order to motivate them; this goes beyond simply giving lectures and requires active participation from the students.

Some people might say that the ideal teacher is someone who is knowledgeable in their subject matter and can teach it effectively. Others might say that the ideal teacher is someone who is patient and caring, and who takes the time to get to know their students.I believe that the ideal teacher is someone who is both knowledgeable and patient. They need to be able to teach effectively, but they also need to be willing to take the time to help students who are struggling. They should be able to foster a love of learning in their students, and help them to grow both academically and emotionally. It is also important that the ideal teacher be someone who is able to connect with their students. They should be able to build relationships with their students, and create a supportive environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

Essay – What character traits suit a teacher best?

Teaching is a profession that most can agree is highly stressful, time consuming and exhausting. But it also one of the most fulfilling, rewarding and exciting jobs to those that love it. For a person to become successful in teaching, and last the course, it is expected that they are effective classroom managers who deliver insightful, thought-provoking lessons, where students can not only gain the academic grades they deserve, but have happy, positive relationships with teachers and their peers.. But what is the difference between a teacher who loves their work and develops meaningful relationships with their students, and those that end up leaving the profession through stress and burn out? The teacher plays a vital part in the educational outcome of a student, but very little is known about what characteristics are important in helping students to achieve their best outcome (Harris & Sass, 2007). Many believe it is the personality and character traits of the teacher that help determine if they become a teacher who hates their job, or one that is happy and settled in their role. A happier teacher is going to a have a much better influence on their students.

Teacher retention is a major problem in the UK. There is a shortage currently of newly qualified teachers staying in their posts past a year. Once a teacher gets past the 2-year mark there is a trend for teacher retention to increase. The number of retiring teachers is currently on a decline, due to the increase in pension age. Due to cuts in funding for trainee teachers, there is also a current decline in the number of individuals joining teacher training courses (GOV.UK, 2021). If a teacher is more likely to stay once they have hit the two-year mark, maybe there is a link between pre-service personality type and retention. When recruiting for new teachers, schools look for characteristics including teaching-specific content knowledge, personality traits, cognitive ability, feelings of self-efficacy, and scores on a teacher selection instrument which is commercially available (Rockoff et al, 2011). It is found that only a few of these predictors have statistically significant relationships with student and teacher outcomes. The personality traits that have been associated with higher attrition rates once a teacher is in service and are able to pass the 2-year rate are, conscientiousness, self-efficacy, good subject knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge (Bastian et al, 2017).

There are many studies that have looked for a definitive answer to what traits are best for a teacher, although there has currently not been an over all agreed upon conclusion. Trait-based theories of teacher effectiveness—for example, effective teachers are outgoing, agreeable and conscientious, have been investigated and written about. A meta-analysis conducted by Kim, Jorg and Klassen (2019) looked at the relationships between 5 personality domains; openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability, and how they related to teacher effectiveness and burn out. In the studies used, the effectiveness of teaching was evaluated using student performance self-efficacy, classroom observations and academic achievements, and the source of their personality report was self-reported. Apart from agreeableness, all of the 5 traits were seen as positive in regards to teacher effectiveness. Furthermore extraversion, conscientiousness and emotional stability were all negatively associated with teacher burn-out (Kim, Jorg & Klassen, 2019). It has been concluded by many that teachers with high levels of an appealing personality trait may be more effective within a classroom setting; but it is not the trait alone that explains how the teacher, and therefore the students perform. It is however, how the traits have an influence on the teacher’s behaviour, their decision-making skills, and learning that matters (Bastian et al 2017). A study by Hughes (2012) found that it is not only the teacher which is a deciding factor on the retention of staff, but the socioeconomic status (SES) of the school area, salary and workload, parent and student relationships, and technology availability. Surprisingly, areas of low SES were found to have higher retention rates than those schools in an area with higher SES.

To be able to fully ascertain how the personality traits of the teacher is utilised for effective learning, there are many control variables to consider. For example, if a school has ample resources, with excellent leadership and from an area where socio economic influences aren’t an issue, it is more likely that using student grades as markers towards effectiveness are going to be of little value in determining the traits of teachers. In comparison, a school that is known to suffer from poor leadership, under resourced and from an area of high deprivation, in term of socio economic status, the ability of the teacher to get high grades is going to be more influential. A study by Duckworth et al, (2009), carried out an investigation in an under resourced inner city public school. They asked novice teachers to complete measures of optimistic explanatory style, grit, and life satisfaction prior to the school year. By the end of the year, it was determined that all 3 were positive predictors of student academic gains. However, grit and life satisfaction were the only two to have high significance on the outcomes of the students, so they concluded these traits should be sought by recruiting agencies.

In conclusion, there have been many studies that have looked at how the personality and character traits of a teacher have an effect on the academic outcomes of a student. For a school to make sure that they are employing someone who will have the ability to positively effect their students and remain in education as a teacher for a substantial time, the personality traits that are desirable are contentiousness, subject knowledge, optimistic explanatory style, grit and self-efficacy. But all these are not effective on their own. There needs to be a working relationship with the school itself, from number of resources, to the leadership and running of the school. Only together can an effective teacher flourish and positively enhance the chances of their students gaining their best from education.

Responsibilities of a Teacher:

Teaching is a tri-polar process which has three indispensable elements or constituents-the teacher or educator, the taught or educed and the curriculum. Out of these three, the teacher plays the most significant role in making the teaching process a grand success. Because the teacher is the real practitioner of the teaching learning process.

He is the pivot in any system of education around which the whole system of education revolves. It is dead sure that the importance of school building, school furniture and equipment, curriculum, the text-books cannot be ignored. But without the teacher, they all are meaningless. But it is not simply the teacher, rather good teachers that are required in this connection. Dr, E.A, Piry says, “If a nations teachers are C3 the nation itself cannot but the C3, and let there be no doubt about this if we wish to be an A-1 nation our teachers will have to be A-1”.

The importance of good teachers is emphasized by Professor, Humayun Kabir by saying without good teachers, even the best of system is bound to fail. With good teachers, even the defects of the system can be largely overcome. The importance of the teacher is also stressed by the Secondary Education Commission (1952-53) in the following words: “We are however convinced that the most important factor in the contemplated educational reconstruction is the teacher—his personal qualities, his educational qualification, his professional training and the place he occupies in the school as well as in the community.

In the words of The Education Commission (1964-66), “of all the different factors which influence the quality of education, and in contribution to material development, the quality, the competence and character of teacher are undoubtedly the most significant. After having such discussion it will be better if we provide an insight into the role or duties and responsibilities after having discussion on the qualification or qualities of a good teacher.

When we become older and enter college, teachers become our friends. Some even become our role models. They inspire us to do great things in life. We learn how to be selfless by teachers. Teachers unknowingly also teach very important lessons to a student.

For instance, when a student gets hurt in school, the teacher rushes them to the infirmary for first aid. This makes a student feel secure and that they know a teacher plays the role of a parent in school.

In other words, a teacher does not merely stick to the role of a teacher. They adapt into various roles as and when the need arises. They become our friends when we are sad, they care for us like our parents when we are hurt. Thus, we see how great a teacher impacts a student’s life and shapes it.

essay on teacher personality

Teacher’s Influence on Student’s Personality

There is no such thing as a self-made man. Every one of us, no matter how talented, smart or independent, has someone who helped raise us, who taught us the things we know, and who molded us into the people we are today. Parents are our first teachers. They teach us to walk and talk, as well as the basic lessons of life. However, they are not the only ones. Just as the school is often referred to as a second home (Rangel 1), so do the teachers working there deserve the title of second parents. My teacher, Mila Sanders, had the greatest influence on me because she was strict yet just, a role-model for our entire class and an excellent pedagogue, capable of bringing fun and sparking interest even towards such a dry and emotionless subject such as math.

Mrs. Sanders stood apart from the rest of the teachers due to her attitude towards us, and towards her duties. We had different kinds of teachers at school. Some were overly strict and enjoyed bullying us for no good reason, dispensing harsh punishments for things that did not deserve it. Others were too shy to exert authority, even when the situation in class was getting under control. Mrs. Sanders struck a perfect balance. She never punished me for no reason, but when she did, I knew exactly what I did wrong. There were no hard feelings, for both of us, and I admired that in her. From here, I learned to avoid personal feelings or preferences, to act justly.

Whether in class or outside of it, Mrs. Sanders conducted herself with dignity and grace, befitting that of a noblewoman. She moved gracefully, never raised her voice, and was able to pacify a class of children getting out of hand with a mere clap of her hands. Despite being middle-aged, she looked very youthful and had excellent taste in clothes. She was not very rich, and yet the simplest of fabrics were looking wonderful on her. The girls from our class often copied her, with varying degrees of success, and so did I. One could say she taught me how to wear clothes and how to behave in public.

Mrs. Sanders was a very dedicated teacher. She was very knowledgeable not only in math but also in other subjects and disciplines as well. She put very heavy emphasis on using mathematics practically. At the beginning of each chapter, she told us which professions the required extensive knowledge of the topic we were about to study and the tasks that were closely related to it. That way, we knew we were not wasting time learning something obscure that would never have any use in real life.

Mrs. Sanders remained a teacher both inside and outside of the classroom. She often conducted an extra-curricular math class, for students who missed out or did not understand a particular subject. She did it free of charge, during her free time. Imagine someone doing this in the 21st century, where people demand money for everything that requires effort. We knew that what she did, she did for us, and we appreciated it greatly.

There is a famous quote, which says that “I am indebted to my father for living, I am indebted to my teacher for living well” (Alexander the Great 1). I feel the same way about Mrs. Sanders. She had a great influence on me, both as a student and as a person, and that influence was nothing but positive. She made me into a better person, and for that, I am grateful to her.
