'Ruslaan' Review: Aayush Sharma shines in a wafer-thin script
'ruslaan' movie review: while the aayush sharma film had the potential to be an engaging drama like 'mission kashmir' or a cat-and-mouse chase like 'tiger' and 'pathaan', it missed the mark..
Listen to Story
- 'Ruslaan' projects Aayush Sharma as an action star, but lacks strong screenplay
- The film's plot about a police officer's son overcoming a tainted past lacks drama and emotions
- Aayush Sharma shows improvement since debut film but needs a better script
Cast & Crew
Aayush Sharma
Release Date: 26 Apr, 2024
The makers of 'Ruslaan' were on an assignment: to project Aayush Sharma as the next action star, and they did it well. Like most of the cinematic war heroes, he is impulsive and impatient, defies protocols, yet displays remarkable courage and love for his motherland. In his third film, the actor impresses audiences with his well-sculpted body, agility, and his alpha-man attitude. While the film hails him as the 'undefeatable hero', it fails in its screenplay.
A police officer adopts the son of a terrorist. He grows up aspiring to overcome his tainted past and serve the nation to prove his deshbhakti (patriotism). A story like this is a potboiler missing from the screens in recent times. If only the film had been made a couple of decades back, it would have left audiences whistling and cheering for the protagonist as he fought his tumultuous life.
Watch | Trailer of Aayush Sharma's Ruslaan
Aayush Sharma has certainly come a long way since his debut film, 'Loveyatri', but he still has room for improvement in emotional scenes. Despite his character's family being tragically wiped out, enduring bullying during childhood, and carrying the tag of a 'terrorist's son', 'Ruslaan' fails to evoke any sympathy from the audience.
Also, what's with the raised eyebrows every time you want to look intense? So not needed, young man! Aayush can dance well, fight like a champ, and looks presentable on screen too. All he needs now is a good script and a director to prove his mettle as an actor.
Newcomer Sushrii Mishraa has a delightful screen presence and can give competition to men when it comes to action. However, her character lacked depth. She didn't get an opportunity to exhibit her acting prowess. The makers also failed to give veteran actor Jagapathi Babu a role worth biting into, as he's reduced to being a sorrowful father and police officer. Even as the character's dynamics change, their impact remains minimal. Vidya Malvade, as a senior RAW officer, managed to make the most of her limited screen time in the film.
Apart from the turbulent storytelling, debutant director Karan Butani has done a fair job of helming a sleek and stylish film. He was also ably supported by his action director and cinematographer. At times, 'Ruslaan' even resembles a commercial for world tourism, seamlessly transporting viewers from one location to another. However, the music is forgettable, ironically, given that the lead character is portrayed as a gifted musician. There are also moments when one questions how Ruslaan, an untrained aspiring agent, can fight and kill like a professional. These small details are often overlooked by the makers, but they make a significant difference.
The angle of the 'good and bad Muslim' is subtly played with, and 'Ruslaan' once again portrays Pakistan and China as sworn enemies of India. The Kashmir issue is also hinted at as the antagonist laments over his family being killed by Indian soldiers. However, the desh-bhakti in the film is abundant, and the monologues don't sound jingoistic. But it's rather distasteful to see the half-hearted efforts of the makers when an actor from Bhutan is cast and is repeatedly addressed as ‘Chinese'.
Recalling the story of a Punjabi agent who masqueraded as a Pakistani officer for years before getting caught, Vidya Malvade's character says, "Ek accha agent banne ke liye ek accha actor banna bhi important hai" (to be a good agent, you have to be a good actor). This made us think that 'ek acchi film banane ke liye, apart from all the glam, ek accha screenplay sabse important hota hai' (To make a good film, you need a good screenplay too).
While 'Ruslaan' had the potential to be an engaging drama like 'Mission Kashmir' or a cat-and-mouse chase like 'Tiger' and 'Pathaan', it missed the mark. 3 out of 5 stars for 'Ruslaan' Published By: Arushi Jain Published On: Apr 26, 2024 ALSO READ | 'Ruslaan' actor Aayush Sharma says his kids 'imitate his action scenes at home'

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, a passage to india.
Now streaming on:
"Only connect!" -- E.M. Forster
That is the advice he gives us in Howards End, and then, in A Passage to India, he creates a world in which there are no connections, where Indians and Englishmen speak the same language but do not understand each other, where it doesn't matter what you say in the famous Marabar Caves, since all that comes back is a hollow, mocking, echo. Forster's novel is one of the literary landmarks of this century, and now David Lean has made it into one of the greatest screen adaptations I have ever seen.
Great novels do not usually translate well to the screen. They are too filled with ambiguities, and movies have a way of making all their images seem like literal fact. "A Passage to India" is especially tricky, because the central event in the novel is something that happens offstage, or never happens at all -- take your choice. On a hot, muggy day, the eager Dr. Aziz leads an expedition to the Marabar Caves. One by one, members of the party drop out, until finally only Miss Quested, from England, is left. And so the Indian man and the British woman climb the last path alone, at a time when England's rule of India was based on an ingrained, semi-official racism, and some British, at least, nodded approvingly at Kipling's "East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." In Forster's novel, it is never clear exactly what it was that happened to Miss Quested after she wandered alone into one of the caves.
David Lean's film leaves that question equally open. But because he is dealing with a visual medium, he cannot make it a mystery where Dr. Aziz is at the time; if you are offstage in a novel, you can be anywhere, but if you are offstage in a movie, you are definitely not where the camera is looking. So in the film version we know, or think we know, that Dr. Aziz is innocent of the charges later brought against him -- of the attempted rape of Miss Quested.
The charges and the trial fill the second half of Lean's "A Passage to India." Lean brings us to that point by a series of perfectly modulated, quietly tension-filled scenes in which Miss Quested ( Judy Davis ) and the kindly Mrs. Moore ( Peggy Ashcroft ) sail to India, where Miss Quested is engaged to marry the priggish local British magistrate in a provincial backwater. Both women want to see the "real India" -- a wish that is either completely lacking among the locals, or is manfully repressed. Mrs. Moore goes walking by a temple pool by moonlight, and meets the earnest young Dr. Aziz, who is captivated by her gentle kindness. Miss Quested wanders by accident into the ruins of another temple, populated by sensuous and erotic statuary, tumbled together, overgrown by vegetation.
Miss Quested's temple visit is not in Forster, but has been added by Lean (who wrote his own screenplay). It accomplishes just what is needed, suggesting that in Miss Quested the forces of sensuality and repression run a great deal more deeply than her sexually constipated fiancé is ever likely to suspect.
Meanwhile, we meet some of the other local characters, including Dr. Godbole ( Alec Guinness ), who meets every crisis with perfect equanimity, and who believes that what will be, will be. This philosophy sounds like recycled fortune cookies but turns out, in the end, to have been the simple truth. We also meet Fielding ( James Fox ), one of those tall, lonely middle-aged Englishmen who hang about the edges of stories set in the Empire, waiting until their destiny commands them to take a firm stand.
Lean places these characters in one of the most beautiful canvases he has ever drawn (and this is the man who directed " Doctor Zhivago " and " Lawrence of Arabia "). He doesn't see the India of travel posters and lurid postcards, but the India of a Victorian watercolorist like Edward Lear, who placed enigmatic little human figures here and there in spectacular landscapes that never seemed to be quite finished. Lean makes India look like an amazing, beautiful place that an Englishman can never quite put his finger on -- which is, of course, the lesson Miss Quested learns in the caves.
David Lean is a meticulous craftsman, famous for going to any lengths to make every shot look just the way he thinks it should. His actors here are encouraged to give sound, thoughtful, unflashy performances (Guinness strains at the bit), and his screenplay is a model of clarity: By the end of this movie we know these people so well, and understand them so thoroughly, that only the most reckless among us would want to go back and have a closer look at those caves.

As Dev Patel’s controversial film Monkey Man awaits release in India, viewers write rave reviews after watching pirated prints online: ‘Bravest, best action films of 2024’
Social media is abuzz with discussions on academy award-nominated actor dev patel’s debut directorial venture monkey man. the prospect of film's release in india seem uncertain..
While uncertainty looms large over the theatrical release of the Hollywood film Monkey Man in India, possibly due to its controversial theme, desi audiences have found an alternative way to watch the film after it dropped on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms in the US. Following the film becoming available for the public to rent or purchase in North America, pirated versions of Monkey Man have surfaced on the internet, and many Indian audiences have already downloaded and watched the action thriller, which hit the screens in the West earlier this month. Now, social media is abuzz with discussions on Academy Award-nominated actor Dev Patel’s debut directorial venture.
Dubbing Monkey Man as “one of the bravest and best action films of 2024,” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Hats off to Dev Patel, who did not compromise his film. This revenge action thriller can clearly avoided the obvious political symbolism, but it didn’t (sic).” Sharing a snippet from the movie, the user added, “See carefully in this clip of 2 min you’ll find many real life videos anti Muslim Pogroms and Moblynchings.”
“Monkey Man was a good movie and I liked it a lot, I hope he makes more movies that show that both he and trans women are rad as hell,” a Twitterati mentioned, while another one wrote, “MONKEY MAN only got better the longer it went. Once that second half kicked in, it was over. Ruled exponentially.”
“It is one of the coolest grounded action films I’ve seen in a bit. With awesome fight choreography, creative cinematography, a solid story, and a great cast, you’re not going to want to miss this one in theaters!,” was one person’s reaction, while another one mentioned, “Still thinking about how incredible well done #MonkeyMan was. Dev Patel’s eye/vision, action/acting ability, and intricate storyline in this movie is top tier. It’s not often an action film targets your heart and breaks it, or has you laughing & cheering during bloody scenes.”
Watch Monkey Man trailer here:
“#MonkeyMan is good. But for all the hype I expected more from it. Dev Patel acts and directs his a** off even though the pacing is rough and it should have been 10 minutes shorter. But! Dev Patel would crush a SIFU movie/show,” another netizen noted.
Bankrolled by renowned filmmaker Jordan Peele, among others, the film stars Patel himself in the titular role, alongside Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, and Sobhita Dhulipala. Although the movie premiered in the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland on April 5, Monkey Man is still awaiting approval from the Central Board of Film Certification in India, without which it cannot be released. As per a tweet on X by Universal, the film will come out in India ‘soon’. However, no details have been shared.
In its trailer, the film’s makers had revealed that Monkey Man is inspired by the legend of Hanuman and boldly addresses political themes. With the country currently witnessing another general elections, the prospects of the film’s release in India appear uncertain.

Razakar: The Silent Genocide Of Hyderabad Movie Review: No Holds-Barred Expose Of Masked History
This is a shocking expose of a gruesome reality behind a politically-motivated distortion of history, around the time of indian independence..
Star Cast: Bobby Simha, Tej Sapru, Makrand Deshpande, Raj Arjun, Annusriya Tripathi, Vedhika, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Thalaivasal Vijay, John Vijay
Director: Yata Satyanarayana
What’s Good: Tells us in a no-holds-barred manner about the way Hindus were tortured by a megalomaniac in the name of Islam. The film also has fabulous performances by Raj Arjun in particular as well as by Tej Sapru and Makrand Deshpande
What’s Bad: An avoidable ‘filmi’ touch merely to add masala entertainment elements, especially in the conception of songs and some clearly implausible stunts by the ‘good’ forces.
Loo Break: Not really
Watch or Not?: Yes, if you are a devotee of truth
Language: Telugu with Hindi dubbing
Available On: Theatrical release
Runtime: 166 Minutes
The real story is set around the time India got her Independence and some princely states had to be integrated into India. The Nizam then, Mir Osman Ali Khan ( Makrand Deshpande ) refuses to do so, preferring to keep Hyderabad intact and make it an Islamic state of his dreams. His militant and despotic lieutenant and general advisor, Kasim Rizvi (Raj Arjun), unleashes a frenzy of torture, brutality, murder, rape and conversions in different parts of the state against Hindus and against Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi as languages being taught—a genocide that few Indians today are even aware about.
As Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru keeps prevaricating, intoning about a treaty India has signed, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the original Iron Man of India and the Home Minister then, decides to take stringent action even as the Nizam plans to ally with Pakistan and other Islamic nations.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Script Analysis
While the original Telugu script does not beat about the bush and shows the extreme levels of inhuman brutality shown by the militant ‘police’ (the Razakar), the Hindi lines also do complete justice to the saga of unbridled despotism out of religious fanaticism. Footage of sadism, unspeakable horrors and mayhem resorted to by the Razakar, again and again, take up most of the film’s long length while an ageing Nizam struggles to retain his royal status out of a misguided sense of power and authority.
The dialogues are chilling, and so are the situations. And the non-fanatic and righteously secular (a term not employed then!!) and nationalistic Muslims are also given the same treatment as the helpless and hapless Hindu folks by these fanatical forces.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Star Performance
If there is one actor who dazzles here, it is Raj Arjun, a man who played the evil stepfather in Secret Superstar with the same ease and aplomb as his portrayal of Shirdi Sai Baba in the web series we saw some years ago. As Rizvi, he comes across as so malevolent and tyrannical that this must be one of the most horrendous of the real-life villains we have seen so far in Hindi cinema. I can only salute him for his expressions, the way he rages, roars and otherwise modulates his voice. And his expressions and the manic look in his eyes in close-ups are simply out of this world.
Tej Sapru is excellent as the determined Sardar Patel in a performance that is as much subdued as it is intense. Makrand Deshpande brings to life the erring Nizam, who sees the light too late but cannot be punished for the genocide he sanctioned. The character of K.M. Munshi, popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, an Indian independence movement activist, politician and writer from Gujarat and the founder of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, is evocatively brought out by veteran South actor Thalaivasal Vijay.
As the film is so stark and graphic about everything, the characters are all perfect for the parts, and among them, Annusriya Tripathi as one of Mir Osman Ali Khan’s wives, Vedhika as Shanthavva and Bobby Simha as Rajireddy stand out. The issue here is that all have got limited to even less (!) footage, but they all still shine in the roles given.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Direction, Music
Director Yata Satyanarayana goes all out in his passionate zeal to expose (as in The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story and Bastar: A Naxal Story) truths hidden from all or most of the nation out of vested interests. A present Censor rule is that whatever is depicted on screen must be backed by documented facts, and clearly the depiction must be authenticated. It is horrifying how the Indian powers then distorted even relatively contemporary history out of pure malicious intent.
The film is very candid in its exhibition of reality, and while the gore may put off a section of the audience (word-of-mouth is always vital for a film’s box-office standing), I must congratulate the director, who has also co-written the script, for showing things as they were.
That said, mention must be made of the needless dramatization that elongates the film, so to speak. The dance invoking the Goddess Durga and another rousing song not only slow down the pace but also seem clearly inspired by S.S. Rajamouli! One song, contextually, is very similar to the classic Kumuram Bheemodu from RRR! The background score is also an inspiration, as are the end-credits. Then there are some action sequences akin to normal films in which the lead actors take on multiple antagonists all at once! The director should have steered clear of such needless add-ons to a terrifying saga, which, unlike the fictional RRR or the Bahubali franchise, is totally real.
The music per se is alright, ditto the fitted Hindi lyrics.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: The Last Word
Such films, sadly, in our country, are labelled as ‘propaganda’ films, even more so as the election season is on. But the truth will always be the truth, and in any case, films always work because of their resonance with the viewer.
Three and a half stars!

"Lagaan" is an enormously entertaining movie, like nothing we've ever seen before, and yet completely familiar. Set in India in 1893, it combines sports with political intrigue, romance with evil scheming, musical numbers with low comedy and high drama, and is therefore soundly in the tradition of the entertainments produced by the Bombay film industry, "Bollywood," which is the world's largest.
