Nagaram Review

Nagaram Review

Nagaram Review, What’s Behind: Success has been eluding Sundeep Kishan from long. His dubbed film Nagaram (in Tamil Maanagaram) has hit the screens today as a crime thriller in Lokesh Kanagaraj direction starring Regina as heroine. Let us see, what happened in the city?

Nagaram Story: In what is said to be a hyperlink cinema, four stories run in parallel to connect with one common element. Sundeep Kishan, a jobless straight forward going guy loves Regina, a software employee. Shri is in Hyderabad to find a job and his certificated are stolen. Third is the kidnap gang of Ramdoss who lift local goon PKP’s daughter. Fourth is that of a cab driver Charle. How these four plots are interlaced together towards climax is a thrilling ride.

Nagaram Artists and Technicians: Weaving multiple stories into one and developing links between each of these stories is a challenge at screenplay. Debutant Lokesh Kanagaraj’s complexity at work is also sensed on screen when various characters and day to day identifiable episodes roll one after the other. Nevertheless, keeping narrative racy without imparting boredom at any point of time is the directorial excellence in Lokesh which surely has to be appreciated. Such kind of layer by layer plot arrangements without turbulence is rare of its kind in Indian cinema. Selva Kumar’s camera work created an authentic and realistic mood. Philomin’s editing though could have a little more crisp yet left no ground. Javed Riaz’s background music haunts us even after exiting the theater. Production standards from Potential Studios of SR Prabhu are worth to appreciate.

About performances, Sundeep Kishan sinks into the role definitely different from his past films. We easily identify an aggressive friend in our friend circle with Sundeep. Heroine Regina though hasn’t got much than connecting two stories yet her presence is pleasing. Shri got lot of variations and connects well. Sympathizing with Charlie is so easy because of pity face. Madhu as PKP is fine. Munishkanth and other artists just lived into the respective roles.

Nagaram Advantages:

- Screenplay

- Direction

- Thrilling Narration

Nagaram Drawbacks:

- Overstretched Scenes

- Complexity

- Missing Nativity

- Too Many Characters

Nagaram Rating Analysis: Yet again, one more classic example on how new age film makers are coming up with dissimilar stories, refreshing screenplay and distinctive directional skills. Every turn the film takes is unpredictable keeping audience hooked to screen. Lokesh and his technical team seem to have done honest, strong ground work before getting the on screen output.

From the very beginning of first scene, director took no time establishing the key characters and four plots. All the artists get in tandem with their respective plots involving the audience into story telling process. May it be Shri wrong-identity and stealing the certificates or Sundeep Kishan-Regina track or Charlie getting his cab on duty or the line of PKP and his daughter’s kidnap from school, everything is told in a new style. Interval block is deftly handled.

Into second half, though entire plot looks open, director accepts challenge and goes beyond our simple assumptions. The advantage he took in driving the four tracks to coherence touches the brutality in city. Especially, Charlie beaten to death by kidnappers or PKP learning a lesson of life or Sundeep’s heroism or Inspector’s double game, there’s a new spark in screenplay.

All in all, Nagaram is a different treat for those who love to watch thrillers. Debutant Lokesh is really talented as his mark is profusely felt in every department. CJ goes for 2.75 stars and is worth watching. Box Office verdict is hard to forecast because response from metros makes all the change.

Film: Nagaram (dubbed) Cast: Sundeep Kishan, Regina Cassandra, Sri, Charlee, Ramdoss Dialogues: Shashank Vennelakanti Music: Javed Riaz Cinematography: Selvakumar SK Edited by: Philomin Written and directed by : Lokesh Kanagaraj Release date: 10th March, 2017

'Nagaram', a human drama at its core, tells at least four stories that coalesce into one finale. It's a screenplay-based thriller.

Sundeep Kishan is unemployed and the only job he knows is to fall after Regina Cassandra. Like those typical filmi heroes, he thinks he is unemployed by choice. He looks raw and unsophisticated in total contrast to Regina, a soft-spoken hi-tech professional in an IT company.

Sri, a new migrant to the city (the film is set in Chennai), finds the metropolis quite unsettling. He sees it as an unfriendly place where the gullible are taken for a ride. Certain goondas mistake him for Sundeep and beat him up, taking away his academic certificates. From this point onwards, Sri's life becomes harder and harder and Sundeep, without his involvement, is causing him the hardships! As Sundeep's fate would have it, Sri is in Regina's good books. Adding a rich texture to these tracks are those of a positive-minded taxi driver (Charlie is simply brilliant) and an amateurish kidnapper (played by comedian Munishkanth), both of whom draw Sri and Sundeep into their lives through their respective acts.

The crux lies in how these four people go through a challenging sequence of events and emerge victorious at a moral level. All of his happens in the backdrop of the mistaken kidnap of a school-going kid, who is the son of a ruthless don (Madhusudanan as PKP) shaking Chennai.

The biggest strength of 'Nagaram' is the screenplay technique. The hyperlink narrative style is not only a technique, but also a tactic. It can conceal the ordinariness of events by keeping the audience guessing about how the different tracks will meet at a junction. Before you realize that it's a routine track, the film abruptly shifts to one of the other tracks.  Something of this sort keeps happening on and on in 'Nagaram'. But it's the highs that keep it gripping. Once Munishkanth's character is introduced (in the very first scene, it becomes clear that he is a dumbo who will ill-execute the kidnap plot), the film takes off quite well.

All the four key characters belong to the middle-class, and all the four have a certain innocent charm about them.  That said, the film has certain Kollywoodish trappings about it. Sri's character sketch is a case in point. Even as you think he is a timid guy, he becomes so fierce as to be capable of beating up professional rowdies in style. Even in such cinematic moments, however, human emotions keep the proceedings touching. Charlie may be a poor father who has to earn money so that he can treat his ailing son, but even in such dire straits, he nurtures no ill will against the tyranny of the metropolis. The way he bats for Madras, saying that millions of migrants find their livelihood in such cities, the way he changes the thinking of the unlucky Sri, is terrific.

As much as Sundeep has done a commendable job, it's to note that his role is not larger. Perhaps, a couple of scenes involving Munishkanth should have been chopped off to make space for Sundeep. His hairdo and aggressive body language, the way he woos Regina without coming across as an arrogant stalker (like those Tamil heroes), is interesting. Regina Cassandra does not have much role in the film.

Munishkanth's comic style totally lacks nativity. It's difficult to watch him in so many scenes for the reason that his reactions seem over the board. Charlie has this uncle-next-door vibes about him. The scene where his wife asks him why he hasn't painted his son's name on the taxi's back window is so realistic. Towards the climax, this element makes a re-appearance in a crime scene.

While 'Nagaram' looks convincing in parts, you are likely to feel that the whole is not as thrilling. There are moral problems also. Is a corrupt cop more immoral and cruel than a don who mercilessly tortures and kills scores of people? How fair is it to put innocents in trouble in avenging an acid-attacker? Selvakumar's cinematography is quite adept. The frames are soothing, helped also by Philomin Raj's editing. Javed Riaz’s BGM may be somewhat inspired, but it is quite a feast. The dialogues lack Telugu nativity.

Bottomline:  'Nagaram' comes with hyperlink screenplay. The thriller element is decently sustained. It's tightly narrated. The performances (especially by Sundeep Kishan) are mostly natural. Despite slow proceedings and lack of nativity, it is decent crime thriller for sure.

Maanagaram movie review: A shocking night of clashing lives in Chennai

Lokesh kanagaraj’s debut work, maanagaram, works like a shakespearean play of mistaken identities. the medley of characters may get confusing in the beginning but it soon settles down to greater clarity and is peppered with surprises..

Maanagaram Director : Lokesh Kanagaraj Cast : Sundeep Kishan, Shri, Regina Cassandra, Madhusudhan, Charle Rating : 3.5 out of 5

Maanagaram stars Sundeep Kishan, Shri and Regina Cassandra in the lead roles.

Somewhere, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s debut work, Maanagaram (Big City), resembles a Shakespearean play of mistaken identities -- of men who suffer because they are at the wrong place and wrong time. The film follows the lives of several people in Chennai during a 48-hour period -- which sees the trials and tribulations of these men and women who learn from their personal disasters the value of goodness.

Shri is a young man pushed to the city from his small town by his girlfriend’s family, which feels that he can earn a respectable salary only in a teeming metropolis. But the path to his job interview - conducted by Regina Cassandra, who is fighting her own demons in the form of a boyfriend, Sundeep Kishan, a loafer adamantly refusing to earn and make a decent start in life - is strewn with mishaps. He gets beaten up by hoodlums who mistake him for Kishan, and in the bloody scuffle Shri loses his original certificates which he needs to firm up his appointment.

At another end, a little boy is kidnapped from school, and here again it is the wrong kid, and horror of horrors, he is the child of a notorious goonda, PKB (Madhusudhan), who specialises in third-degree torture of his detractors.

And there is also a cab driver, Charle, who gets an assignment in an information technology company (where Shri lands an assignment), but has no clue about the city roads - having just arrived into Chennai.

In a movie that picks up its tempo after nightfall and plays out mostly on the city’s deserted roads, we see a very well edited drama taking place at many levels. Kishan has been ordered by his policeman uncle to get out of the city for a while, but the young man keeps hanging outside Regina’s hostel in the hope that she would patch up with him. Somewhere else, we see PKB looking for his kidnapped son with the thugs demanding a huge ransom and sending him on a wild goose chase, while Charle is trying to take to Shri home.

These stories converge at a point - which is not exactly novel, for we have seen an excellent version of this kind of treatment in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Mexican work, Babel -- which is fascinating study of four inter-related events that unfold in different countries like Morocco, Mexico, US and Japan, but which converge in the end. Maanagaram may not play out in different cities, but is an equally gripping narrative about different people in different situations whose lives, in some kind of a remarkable coincidence, clash with one another on a lonely night.

Maanagaram may seem confusing in its first few minutes with a medley of characters fighting for screen space, but the work soon settles down to greater clarity and even narration -- which is peppered with surprises. And these, of course, keep your attention riveted to the story.

Nagaram Review

nagaram movie review in telugu

Right (Srikanth) is the right hand for a local mafia don called Khasim bhai (Pradeep Rawat). Right doesn't know anything except to follow his boss' orders provided it is justified. Once Khasim orders Right to kill an officer, who has become a thorn in leg for a minister (Ashok Kumar). However, Right does not kill him as he is against killing innocent children. So the Nazar, son of Khasim, executes the murder. This leads to a rift between Right and Nazar. Khasim's son (GV) chalks out a plan and sends Right to jail. Incidentally, he dies in the hands of Right's staunch associate (Ajay). Irked over this, Khasim kills him. At the instance of ACP VJ Choudary (Jagapatibabu), Right realizes that doing goondaism is no good and decides to join the mainstream. At this juncture, (Kaveri Jha) comes to Right for her research on goondaism. In this backdrop, ACP Choudary gets transferred and another ACP (Kalabhavan Mani) takes charge. Being totally corrupt, the new ACP forces Right to return to goondaism again, but the latter refuses. The new ACP arrests Right's sister on charges of ganja sale, when she comes to the station to enlarge Right. She gets raped by jail staffers and with the humiliation she commits suicide. Fearing threat to their lives, both the minister and Khasim tell the new ACP to kill Right. The corrupt cop takes him to city outskirts to kill him in an encounter. In the climax, the hero kills everyone, who are troubling the society to ensure the city a peaceful place.

PLUS: The only plus point is the performance of Srikanth. Though he is not happy with the role, he has tried his best to manage. Once again, He has showed good ease in action scenes and maintained certain dignity. Jagapathi Babu appears in just couple of scenes and has nothing much to perform, but his role is portrayed in a novel way. Other artists including Ashok Kumar, Pradeep Rawat, Ajay, GV have done justice to their roles. Kalabhavan Mani continued his mimicry and is okay as a baddie in police department.

MINUS: Poor and slippery screenplay, utter confusing narration, lack of coordination between scenes, which appear very disjointed, picturization of scenes without logic and there are many more such lapses in the film. However, one thing is clear that the film earned a flop talk right on the first day first show due to the lapses behind the screen and not because of the artists present on the screen. All the artists have given their best but absence of a gripping story and dreadful screenplay tested the patience of the audiences. Those, who patiently waited till the climax had to heave a sigh of relief with the 'The end' card.

REMARKS: Music by Chakri is below average. The director has failed to make use of the presence of several good artists, leave alone the item song by Manisha Koirala. Even the comedians present in the film failed to provide adequate comic relief to the audiences. Moreover, Nandyala Ravi especially employed to script the comedy track, who miserably failed in his endeavour. Dialogues in the film are just good in parts. As a whole, there is nothing good to watch except the picturization of a couple of action scenes.

Cast: Srikanth, Kaveri Jha, Jagapatibabu, Pradeep Rawat, Ashokkumar, Kalabhavan Mani, GV, Ajay, Jayaprakash Reddy, Raghubabu, Ali, Venumadhav, Brahmanandam, LB Sriram, Sivaji Raja, Nalla Rajesh, Ram Jagan, Manisha Koirala, Bhuvaneswari, Bhargavi, Apoorva and others.

Credits: Music – Chakri, Lyrics – Veturi, Bhuvanachandra, Bhaskarabhatla Ravikumar, Dialogues – Swamiji-Vijay, Comedy track – Nandyala Ravi, Camera – Sarat, Editing – Gauthamraju, Art – Bhaskara Raju, Action – Ram-Lakshman, Presents – MV Choudary, Producers – M Anjibabu and P Kishorebabu, screenplay and direction – CC Srinivas.
