Presentation College seeking new athletic director, softball coach

There have been a few recent shakeups in the athletic department at Presentation College.

Daniel Garrett, who joined the program in 2021 as the athletic director, has resigned from the school to pursue other opportunities, according to Presentation's Director of Marketing and Public Affairs Andrew Hansen.

Mari Jordan, who was the school's softball coach, has also resigned to pursue a master's degree, according to Hansen.

Presentation is actively searching for someone to replace Jordan, who took over the program in 2017. Last season, the Saints had a 12-30 record, getting eliminated from the North Star Athletic Association Softball Tournament with losses to Valley City State University and Waldorf University.

Robert Papazian, who was both the sports information director and assistant athletic director for a year, also submitted his resignation to pursue other opportunities, according to the college.

"We wish all three of them the best and we've begun the process of finding their replacements and are just excited for the upcoming school year, but particularly the upcoming athletic season," Hansen said.

Earlier this year, Presentation announced that Trevor Flemmer, an alumnus, will take over the Presentation men's basketball program after Stan Holt departed after one season.

The school also announced that Samuel Winning will take over the soccer program, which was previously led by Terry Kampa. Last season, the Saints went 2-12.

Hansen said that the football, volleyball, men's soccer and women's soccer teams will report for practice in August.

The football team will open its season in Aberdeen against Mount Marty on Aug. 25, while the volleyball team will open its season against Mount Marty on Aug. 23 at the Strode Center. The men's soccer team will travel to Rapid City to take on South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Aug. 17. The women's soccer team opens its season with an exhibition against Northern State on Aug. 16.

🏆 Oklahoma wins 2023 DI softball national championship

presentation college softball

With a 3-1 win over Florida State in Game 2 of the best-of-3 Women's College World Series Finals, No. 1 Oklahoma secured its third straight national title while extending their record-setting winning streak to 53 games.

In the series-clinching win, Oklahoma trailed briefly after Florida State's Mack Leonard popped a solo home run to give the Noles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

But the Sooners quickly responded with back-to-back solo homers by Grace Lyons and Rylie Boone to flip the game and take a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. An inning later, Alynah Torres grounded into a fielder's choice that scored another runner and put OU up 3-1 in the sixth inning.

presentation college softball

These two runs were more than enough for Jordy Bahl, who pitched the last three innings just one day after throwing a complete game shutout in the first game of the championship series. Bahl continued her dominant postseason as she did not allow a baserunner across her three innings of work.

With the win, Oklahoma became the first team to three-peat as national champions since 1988-90 when UCLA pulled off the feat. This is the seventh national title in program history and the sixth in the past 10 years for Patty Gasso's Sooners.

Mack Leonard pulled a two-strike change-up down the right field line and just over the fence for a solo home run that gives FSU a 1-0 lead. This home run was Florida State's first run of the championship series.

At the end of four innings, Florida State leads 1-0.

For the second time of the WCWS, Oklahoma's All-American center fielder robs an opponent of a home run. This time, she stole a three-run shot away from Florida State's Kalei Harding.

FSU escapes a bases-loaded jam 👀

Three straight hits to start the third inning set up Jayda Coleman and Oklahoma with the bases loaded and nobody out.

Coleman was unable to take advantage of her RBI opportunity, grounding into a fielder's choice that cut down the runner at home. Tiare Jennings, who became the WCWS' all-time RBI leader on Wednesday, stepped in next. Like Coleman, she grounded into a fielder's choice, leaving it up to Haley Lee to break open the scoring for Oklahoma.

Lee hit a shallow pop-fly to left field that was caught calmly by Kaley Mudge, securing the third out of the inning for the Seminoles and allowing ace Kathryn Sandercock to keep her shutout alive.

Heading to the bottom of the third, we remain tied, 0-0.

We are underway in Game 2 of the WCWS finals

After Oklahoma took a 1-0 series lead last night, Florida State must win tonight to extend the series and their season. Here are the starting lineups:

A complete game shutout by Jordy Bahl helped No. 1 Oklahoma earn a 1-0 series lead and extend their record winning streak to 52 games with a 5-0 win over Florida State.

Bahl struck out ten Florida State hitters while allowing just two two hits and one walk across her seven innings of work.

It took the Sooners' offense time to get going, but Oklahoma scored in each of the last three innings it came to the plate, highlighted by a three-run fourth inning.

These two teams will meet again on Thursday night. Oklahoma, now with a 1-0 series lead, will have the opportunity to win the national championship with a win tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.

After three innings of one hit ball, Florida State elected to pull Mack Leonard and bring in Makenna Reid out of the bullpen.

The first batter Reid faced was Kinzie Hansen, who promptly blasted the second pitch she saw to center field for an RBI double that scored pinch-runner Jordy Bahl all the way from first. The next batter. Alyssa Brito, blooped home a single that scored Hansen, giving OU a 2-0 lead.

After a sacrifice bunt to get Brito to second, Reid spiked a throw to first that was not fielded cleanly, allowing Brito to score and extend the Sooners' lead to three.

Jordy Bahl is back out to pitch the fifth inning for Oklahoma. She has struck out six hitters through her first four innings of shutout work.

Oklahoma and Florida State will meet in Oklahoma City with a national championship on the line for the second time in the past three seasons. Here's what you need to know about each team before the action gets underway on Wednesday.

No. 1 Oklahoma

The top-seeded Oklahoma Sooners set the all-time record for consecutive wins only recently. This mark now stands at 51 as the Sooners have cruised through their first three games of the Women's College World Series.

Oklahoma leads the nation in just about every major statistic. Just to name a few, Oklahoma ranks first in: scoring, on-base percentage, home runs, earned run average and pitching shutouts. They lead most of these categories by a wide margin.

The Sooners have eight players with a .320 batting average or better. Five of these eight have also popped double-digit home runs. In the circle, they have three true aces in the three-headed monster of Jordy Bahl, Nicole May and Alex Storako.

No. 3 Florida State

Bring it on #Team40 pic.twitter.com/7BtpvYyoS4 — Florida State Softball 🥎 (@FSU_Softball) June 7, 2023

If there is a team built to beat Oklahoma, it might just be Florida State. The Seminoles bring an impressive 58-9 record to the championship series, winning 24 of their last 25 games.

Like Oklahoma, Florida State has talent in the circle. Kathryn Sandercock already has a perfect game this tournament, and has proven herself as one of the nation's premier pitchers this season. Freshman Makenna Reid has also been outstanding for FSU this season, going 13-0 with an ERA less than 1 in her first season in Tallahassee.

Offensively, Florida State is not as dominant as Oklahoma, but the 'Noles still score more than six runs per game.

The pitching staff is Florida State's bread and butter, and will likely be the primary reason they can hang with Oklahoma.

Game one of the championship series starts Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. The team's will play a best two-out-of-three series, with the first team to win two games crowned as the 2023 national champions.

NCAA Softball Tournament bracket: Texas' schedule, TV channels and streaming

Texas may have lost the Big 12 Softball Championship to Oklahoma, but the ultimate strength of their record earned them the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

This earned the Longhorns the right to have the initial weekends of the tournament at home. First up for Texas is fourth-seeded Siena (33-20), a private school just north of Albany, N.Y.

Texas catcher Reese Atwood, the Big 12 Player of the Year, leads a powerful Longhorns offense while a solid defensive personnel buoys a deep pitching staff. UT may have some additional pressure as the top seed of the tournament, but coach Mike White says that they're used to it.

"Texas always has got a target, you know?" White said. "Now, the target just got a little bit bigger."

Here's everything to know about the tournament.

How to price sponsored posts as a college athlete and more NIL takeaways from an influencer-marketing presentation

  • Rachel Maeng Brown is a former NCAA rower who now works with student-athletes at her firm Gen Agency.
  • The agency has provided NIL education and consulting to college athletes, collectives, and schools.
  • Brown shared a presentation with five strategies to help athletes price and negotiate brand deals.

Insider Today

Knowing your worth is a struggle many college athletes face now that they can make money from their name, image, and likeness, known as NIL.

To help athletes understand their value, influencer-marketing-and-production company Gen Agency has been educating and consulting college athletes on NIL.

"Our big focus is creating a sustainable NIL marketplace at each university," Rachel Maeng Brown, the founder and CEO of Gen agency, told Business Insider.

Brown, a former NCAA rower, said the NIL side of Gen Agency educates universities to help them build curriculums. The agency also offers athletes on-site and virtual workshops about NIL marketing.

In April, Gen Agency hosted its first NIL-educational summit for University of Michigan influencers in partnership with Reach , a student-driven organization helping content creators grow their platforms and connect with brands. The presentation, which was shared with BI, covered how athletes can understand their audience, price sponsored content, post properly on social media, and protect themselves with a contract.

The summit also featured a panel of guest speakers, including former NFL player Isaiah Johnson . Johnson told BI that social-media followers and engagement are more important to brands who work with athletes than on-field performance.

"Followers, everyone wants to know how many people are following you and then two, just how genuine you are," he said. "If you are genuinely using a product, this could be a wonderful fit."

Johnson said athletes with the best media presence are natural and real with their followers. He said sports fans love behind-the-scenes footage they can not get from somewhere else, like athletes' day-in-the-life videos.

Here are five key slides from Gen Agency's NIL presentation on how athletes can brand themselves and negotiate fair pay:

Learn about your audience

Brown said knowing your target audience is key to working with brands. It helps companies understand who they can reach by recruiting you.

During the summit, Brown showed athletes where to find key stats on their Instagram audiences, including follower count and growth, location, age, and gender.

A formula athletes can use to estimate the price of a brand deal

presentation college softball

The presentation offered a formula student-athletes can use to calculate how much to charge brands for a sponsored post. It's based on a $10 CPM, which refers to the cost per every 1,000 impressions, though CPMs can vary.

To calculate what to charge per post, take the average number of views over the last 30 days and divide it by 1,000. Then take that figure and multiply it by the CPM.

Using that math, an athlete with 600,000 average views over the last days would charge $6,000 per post, based on a $10 CPM, per the presentation's example.

Know your copyright rules

presentation college softball

Athletes, like other influencers, need to comply with brand, platform, and regulatory guidelines for social-media posts and ads, such as copyright rules and what kind of content is permitted on a platform.

Student-athletes also need to abide by NCAA rules because posting inappropriate content can result in losing scholarships, eligibility, and future career opportunities, according to the NCAA .

Brown said college athletes should also exercise caution and not include other brands or anything illegal in a sponsored post. She advised double-checking the spelling before posting, too.

Dos and don'ts for sponsored posts

presentation college softball

The agency also emphasized the importance of double-checking disclosures for paid ads, partnerships, and more so athletes do not have to delete or redo sponsored videos.

"This is really important to student-athletes as well as smaller influencers because a lot of brands will try to bully them," said Brown, "to say, 'You don't need to put hashtag. You don't need to disclose that we're sponsored.' But it's actually illegal across social media."

She said failing to disclose a sponsored post could result in an athlete's account being banned or messing up their average views and algorithm.

Things to know about payment

presentation college softball

Brown also talked about contracts and W-9s, which are tax forms for independent contractors. The presentation emphasized in capital letters that athletes need a contract to make sure they get paid for their work.

They should also be mindful of terms such as "usage" and "ownership" because it could mean their videos could be posted on any social-media channel or site.

Brown said brands are not going to protect the athletes, so they need to look out for themselves.
