With its new strategy, in which it has overhauled the marketing plan, portfolio offering and repositioned itself in the consumer market, with a competitive pricing approach, the Rs1,700-crore Modicare aims to maintain its recently-gained momentum going forward as well. Even in the recent Covid-afflicted marketplace, the company’s performance has been extremely good and it is looking to close the fiscal year with a 40 per cent surge in revenue. The New Delhi-based marketing specialist has caught up fast. It is now one of India’s leading direct selling companies, with over 4.5 million direct sellers and over 300,000 new direct sellers joining its fold each month. The company offers over 275 products, 600+ SKUs across 12 categories – personal care, wellness, skin care, colour cosmetics, 18-karat gold-plated jewellery, food & beverage, homecare, auto care, laundry care, technology, accessories, and agriculture. The wellness range, which accounts for 27 per cent of its total portfolio, is witnessing impressive traction. With a 30 per cent share, personal care leads the table, whereas food and beverages account for 24 per cent of its portfolio. Modicare is an ISO 9001:2015 certified organisation and has a national presence through its over 9,000 distribution points and over 50 Modicare centres. The company has partnered with over 30 leading third-party manufacturers (both domestic and overseas, across over 50 production facilities), which help it deliver quality products at reasonable prices. It covers more than 4,000 Indian towns serving around 17,000 pin codes. “Direct selling or direct-to-home in India is in a high growth phase, with a lot of headroom for growth,” says N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, a Mumbai-based consumer-analytics & brand insights company, which publishes TRA’s Brand Trust Report. “Modicare has been one of the few Indian companies, which recognised this opportunity early. Direct selling is a business of trust, in which each business partner relies on their close network of family and friends to spread the business. Modicare’s direct selling has become a good option for millions of women, giving them the freedom to do business, with relatively low investment.” “In this business of direct selling, we sincerely pursue a vision of enabling every Indian to have financial ‘azadi’ or economic freedom, which in turn will lead to freedom across various aspects of life,” explains Samir Modi, founder & managing director, Modicare Ltd. “We have been instrumental in transforming the lives of millions through higher earnings. In fact, our compensation plan commands a competitive edge by virtue of being one of the highest pay out (about 60 per cent) plans in the Indian direct selling space.” Modi has put up a plan to take the company’s topline to Rs10,000 crore in the next five to six years. For this it is looking to enter overseas markets while also expanding its domestic base. This year, the company plans to launch its business in the UK and the EU, which will be followed by Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Competitive edge The company has rebranded itself, reinvested in changing the product line and launched a new colour cosmetics line, Urban Color. Product prices have been brought down by 40 per cent, without compromising on quality, giving Modicare products a huge competitive edge in the overall direct-selling industry. New and old products came under the unique ‘Samir Modi 100 per cent Satisfaction Guarantee’. If the consumers are unhappy with the quality of any product, they are entitled to a 100 per cent ‘no-questions-asked’ refund. In October 2020, Modicare re-launched its compensation plan, ‘Samir Modi Azadi Plan’, making it even more robust, ensuring faster ‘azadi’ or financial freedom to its direct sellers. As one of the highest-paying compensation plans in the direct-selling industry, it is transforming the lives of millions by offering higher earning potential, along with numerous other earned allowances. Under its new plan and strategy, the company has been aggressive in motivating and recognising its consultants. We also enhanced our online and digital strategy, revamped our website and launched our app. We turned housewives and ordinary folk into business people by putting data on their mobile phones. The consultants have a plethora of information that they didn’t have earlier. We also have a large number of products at attractive prices.”

Modicare has partnered with over 30 leading third-party manufacturers

“Modicare is a brand that is mentioned quite in the same breath as an Amway or Tupperware,” acknowledges Harish Bijoor, brand-strategy expert & founder, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc. “To that extent it is the leader in the Indian pack in the category. The brand is certainly seen to be reliable and solid. An offering that stands by its distributors come rain or shine.” During the pandemic the company has been expanding its portfolio. With health and safety assuming huge importance in everyone’s life today, Modicare launched about 10 wellness products in December alone and is now all set to launch several products in the coming months in this category. The pandemic posed challenges as well. While the company tried to ensure the safety of its large pool of direct sellers and employees, it was paramount to stay connected. With the lockdown in place, in-person meetings were impacted severely. However, it displayed agility and ingenuity, and swiftly adapted to the social and digital media platforms to connect with its consultants and keep the momentum going. “We conducted online meetings,” remarks Modi. “We also enabled digital tools like Chatbot Roshini, Instant Messaging Catalogue and Modicare Online Training Academy, to ensure constant communication with our consultants. Even during the lockdown, our team made sure that we adhered to government regulations and delivered essential products from our portfolio. Our distribution point owners have been silent warriors, who ensured timely delivery of orders to our consultants, even during the lockdown." “Digital and social media are incredibly important today for every business, regardless of the category in which one operates,” asserts Chandramauli. “In fact, the pandemic has actually propelled the entire digital revolution. Today, even elderly people have become tech savvy and are shopping online.” He is of the view that, in the last couple of years, more and more people have become comfortable with the idea of direct selling. With rules and regulations being put in place by the government, the sector is moving towards achieving more formal status and heading for an organised structure. Home-grown companies like Ambay, Oriflame, Herbalife and others are gearing up to pose challenges to MNCs. Most of these competitors cater to the high-end market, while Modicare mainly meet the needs of the mass market. The Swedish direct selling cosmetic brand, Oriflame, has also completed 25 years in India and is betting big on the emerging opportunities in the Indian market, which has emerged as one of the top five global markets for the company. Buoyed by the Indian market, Oriflame has put up two manufacturing facilities in India and a significant part of its portfolio is in the cosmetics and wellness category. The Swedish major is now coming up with its first baby care range in India, where 70 per cent of its salesforce are women. “We have had a good year (2020), with over 25 per cent growth in sales partners, who we call our salesforce,” says Frederic Widell, VP & head, South Asia, as also MD, India, Oriflame. “Modicare recorded higher growth in sales in the third and fourth quarter and almost covered the losses incurred in the second quarter due to the imposition of the lockdown.” Improved ranking With regulations and structure getting in place, the Indian direct selling industry is expected to show impressive growth. In 2019, the domestic industry recorded sales of about $2.50 billion, clocking a growth of 12.1 per cent, as per a report by the World Federation of Direct Selling Association (WFDSA). This helped the Indian direct selling industry improve its ranking to 15th from the earlier 19th a year before. Moreover, in terms of the number of direct sellers, India was ranked at sixth position, providing employment to 5.8 million people. Wellness topped the chart of leading segments in direct selling, followed by cosmetics and personal care. As against this, the global direct selling industry reported an overall decline of 4.3 per cent in sales to $180.47 billion in 2019.

Modicare is a multi-level marketing company in the health and wellness niche. Other than that, they sell a wide variety of products.

This company is the first-ever Indian-owned MLM. Modicare is currently owned by Modi Enterprises, a multi-billion dollar corporation based in New Delhi, India.

Modicare was founded in 1996 by Samir Modi. He is the grandson of the founder of Modi Enterprises, Gujarmal Modi.

Samir has been involved in the family business since 1992, as he was made to manage the tobacco business of Modi Enterprises.

In 2003, Samir launched a cosmetics brand under Modicare, named Colorbar Cosmetics. This was then released to the public the following year.

He holds the executive director post for Godfrey Phillips India, while he is also one of the directors of Indofil Industries Ltd.

Just like any other MLM, they offer an opportunity to make money once you sign up for the company.

MLMs are the worst, in my opinion, and any other business opportunity would be preferable to joining one.

Because they are trained to do so, pharmacists are eager to answer inquiries. People who want a personalized purchasing experience don’t have to search much farther.

Those individuals studied pharmacy, so they understand what they’re talking about and what is ideal for their clients.

Why would you expect people to buy from you if you’re simply an ordinary person with no pharmaceutical experience?

Sure, the company will teach you so you’ll know how to sell the items, but would consumers trust a stranger to prescribe vitamins to them? I’m not going to do it.

Is Modicare a Pyramid Scheme?

Since Modicare is an MLM, there are two basic ways to make money with the company. and these are:

The Ayushman Bharat programme, dubbed “Modicare” after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised health cover worth 500,000 rupees ($6,900) to every poor family to treat serious ailments.

On Sunday, Modi handed medical cards out at the launch in Ranchi, calling it a “historic day” for the country. 

The government is aiming is set up 50,000 wellness centres across the country over the next four years, he said. 

“The scheme will not have any distinguished plans on the basis of sect or caste. There will be no discrimination based on any race or any fraternity,” said Modi.

India spends just 1.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on healthcare compared to a global average of six percent.

The country’s overburdened public health system is plagued by a shortage of hospitals and doctors and most people use private clinics and hospitals if they can afford to.

But a private consultation can cost 1,000 rupees ($15), a huge sum for millions living on less than two dollars a day.

More than 60 percent of the average family’s spending goes on medicines and healthcare, the government estimates.

“There has been a lot of concern regarding the human resources, but I think within 10 to 15 years, our health sector would become a world class health sector,” Ilias Ali, a doctor based in the northeastern city of Guwahati, told Al Jazeera.

Experts have praised the latest programme but say it should have included primary day-to-day healthcare instead of just secondary and tertiary care for more serious and long-term treatment.

“Modicare does not extend to primary healthcare, which, we believe, is the weakest link in the provision of public health in India,” Rajiv Lall and Vivek Dehejia of the IDFC Institute think-tank said in a column for the Mint newspaper.

“The crucial point is that poorly delivered primary care inevitably increases the burden on health and finance at the secondary and tertiary levels down the line,” they said.

And ALICEs who aren't parents face unique challenges: it is especially difficult to qualify for financial help or tax credits without young children, even if you need the help.

According to a report published in April by the Brookings Institution, the US doesn't have a strong financial safety net to support childfree ALICEs. This is partly because having financially dependent children is a prerequisite of some government assistance programs .

Poor, non-elderly adults who are not raising children and don't qualify for disability benefits made up nearly 106 million people in 2017, according to a Census analysis . What's more, they have a higher risk of experiencing homelessness and long-term poverty, per the Brookings report.

Low-income adults without children face barriers to government assistance

Low-income, childfree adults have a higher likelihood of falling into poverty, and often stay in poverty long-term because they can't access assistance, wrote Robert Greenstein, the author of the Brookings report.

"The safety net for these non-elderly childless adults is so limited, those non-elderly adults who are poor tend to be poorer than others living in poverty," wrote Greenstein, who is also a visiting fellow of economic studies for the Brookings Institution, which is affiliated with The Hamilton Project, an economic policy initiative.

The report found that half of the Americans living in "deep poverty" — those with incomes that are at or below 50% of the poverty line, which is $7,290 annually for one person — are childfree adults not receiving disability benefits.

Greenstein wrote that this population is at a disadvantage when applying for government support, especially as it comes to tax credits and housing assistance, even if their household income is low.

For example, they don't qualify for the child tax credit , which allows families with dependents to receive thousands of dollars in tax breaks each year. The Earned Income Tax Credit — which offers refundable tax credits for low- and moderate-income workers — is also very limited for childfree employees, who receive fewer than 4% of the EITC's overall benefits, according to the Brookings report.

Greenstein also wrote that over 7 million low-income adults who are between the ages of 18 to 61 and don't live with minors pay more than 50% of their income on rent — making them severely rent-burdened. The majority of these adults don't receive any state or federal rental assistance.

Additionally, parents can more easily access SNAP food benefits than childfree adults because they are exempt from having to work a required amount of hours each week to receive assistance.

Many Social Security and Medicare programs also primarily offer assistance to older adults, excluding adults under 62.

Although strengthening the US financial safety net for this population is complex, Greenstein offered a few solutions. He suggested expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit to benefit more adults without children, along with removing the extra qualifications childfree adults must meet to access SNAP benefits.

An expansion of Medicaid through the Affordable Care Act would also allow more adults to get the healthcare they need — even if they don't qualify for disability benefits or Social Security, Greenstein said.

If you want to get rich , Start your own business, invest in stock market(it’s not easy), or get a central government job, but you need to work hard, handle risks, psychologically strong..my suggestion I have joined modicare, vestige but it’s not easy to get rich in these field (network marketing)

It is true that success rate is too low in MLM companies but we have to understand it from different perspective. First in most other careers too sucess rate is also not too rosy in India. Even a petty kirana shop often fails in many cases despite giving whole 10 hours of your day. Similarly success rate in getting job and being successful is also too low. If you take a closure look sucess rate in most businesses is maximum of one to two percent only. Often people fails in multiple careers before settling for in their life. Secondly most people just join MLM in anticipation that their down line will work and they will start getting results. But truth is that if you are dedicated, disciplined and honest in selling the products / plans sucess rate is good. I joined Modicare about 7 months back on insistence of a relative. For 6 months I did nothing except purchasing Rs. 2500 worth of goods every month. Then I decided to give a serious shot to it and in about one month I was amazed to see good results. All I did was I draw a list of persons I want to target. Since I am extremely busy with my regular job I spare half hour daily on it. Just called them one by one and introduce them to the scheme telephonically. Ofcourse I had support from my up line too which did meet personally with the targeted persons and bring the person in my downline. But harsh reality is that leave apart discussing products or plans with their links most people do not take pain to change their own purchasing habits of purchasing the products of MLM company they have themselves joined and expect company to shower them with money. In MLM sale is must and it must start with the home of joinee.

I understand your concern. I am not bias to any particular MLM Company and i tried my best to provide a neutral comparison. The reason for comparing only them was their product and business plan which overlap each other and they are in market from long time.

There are few problem actually exist with amway and i think which you can’t digest. Amway is already suffering from market saturation and same situation is going to arrive for vestige as well. Vestige is also not a perfect company, they also have some drawback.

In Business trying to suppress direct competitor is a normal phenomenon. For eg, now Ok Life Care is trying to overtake vestige.

And all these mentioned question you need to ask someone who is top leader in vestige, so you can make a debate on it.

Modicare – Their products are not at par and no control on quality. They do not have transparency in the manufacturing process and have a very poor payment structure.

What to know about Gov. Newsom’s plan to offset California’s $45-billion deficit

Faced with a $44.9-billion budget deficit, Gov. Gavin Newsom described a plan to shrink the size of state government and slow his progressive policy agenda by eliminating 10,000 vacant state jobs, pausing an expansion of subsidized childcare and cutting billions in funding for climate change programs.

Newsom’s revised $288-billion budget proposal, announced Friday, projected California’s deficit to be $7 billion more than the shortfall his administration expected in January. The grim forecast was driven by lower than projected state revenues, continuing a pendulum swing from the fiscal boom of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These are things we worked closely with the Legislature to advance,” Newsom said of the cuts. “None of this is the kind of work you enjoy doing, but you’ve got to do it. We have to be responsible. We have to be accountable.”

Newsom’s plan to close the deficit relies on $17.3 billion in savings from budget cuts he and lawmakers agreed to in April and using $4.2 billion from the state’s rainy day fund and budget reserves for the upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed spending reductions Newsom touched on Friday also reverse and slash an additional $8.2 billion in funding in 2024-25.

Newsom’s proposal includes $3.6 billion less for programs related to fighting climate change, said H.D. Palmer, a spokesperson for the Finance Department. The plan would also cut $2 billion over two years from a program to expand internet connectivity to underserved homes, businesses and community institutions.

The governor’s revised budget proposal, which includes updated revenue projections after the state income tax filing deadline, typically jump-starts negotiations with Democratic leaders in the Senate and Assembly over a final fiscal plan for the upcoming year. The state Constitution requires lawmakers to approve the state budget by June 15.

An ‘incomplete’ plan

The governor’s budget plan released Friday was incomplete compared to prior years. The administration provided only a 50-page summary of his proposal, compared to the more detailed, 260-page document Newsom released in January.

Newsom’s budget news conference was originally scheduled for next Tuesday, the deadline for the governor to share his revised budget with the state Legislature. But Newsom is flying to Rome that day to speak at a climate conference at the Vatican and bumped his presentation up to Friday.

The change left the state Department of Finance, the fiscal arm of his administration, short on time to finalize a full budget summary, and additional documents, Palmer said. More information, his aides said, will be made available when additional documents are made public on Tuesday.

How bad is the budget problem?

Newsom cast California’s current financial situation as a return to normal after the federal government provided trillions of dollars in funding to individuals, families, businesses and state governments during the COVID-19 pandemic, payouts that resulted in a historic surplus in California.

But those flush times did not last, and poor revenue forecasts in recent years have also deepened the state’s fiscal troubles.

Newsom’s estimate of a $100-billion surplus two years ago ended up far too rosy, and revenue in subsequent years also fell short of projections. A decision by the federal government to delay the 2022 federal income tax deadline from April to November due to winter storms complicated California’s ability to project revenues last year.

Newsom’s plan seeks to solve the budget deficit for the next two budget years, including additional cuts, reductions and delays to solve an estimated $28.4-billion deficit in 2025-26.

State Sen. Roger Niello (R-Fair Oaks) called out the difference between Newsom’s deficit estimates and much higher models from the Legislative Analyst’s Office.

“He continues to hang on to the unrealistically low deficit with the clear expertise of the LAO stating that the problem is significantly greater than that and that just means that his budget solutions are shooting too low,” Niello said. “We’ll get to the end of another fiscal year where we’re in trouble again, just like this one.”

Why does the deficit number keep changing?

In January, the Newsom administration predicted that California would have a $37.9-billion deficit to reckon with in the budget that lawmakers adopt in June.

Newsom and leaders of the Senate and Assembly reached an early agreement in April on $17.3 billion in reductions though most of those changes will not be passed into law until next month. Lawmakers passed a budget trailer bill that lowers unspent funding allocations in 2022-23 and 2023-24 by $1.6 billion last month.

The deficit number Newsom presented Friday subtracts the $17.3 billion in cuts agreed to earlier from the $37.9-billion deficit estimate from January.

Revenues have fallen short of expectations since January, deepening the budget problem by $7 billion.

Newsom is referring to the shortfall as $27.6 billion in 2024-25, but California is making cuts and reductions to solve a total budget deficit of $44.9 billion this year.

How will the governor’s cuts affect education?

Under Proposition 98, California has a minimum funding guarantee for schools and community colleges. Newsom is proposing an unusual maneuver to go back and lower the funding requirement for 2022-23 to reflect the lower-than-expected state revenues that came in late last year. The change could ultimately reduce funding for schools by tens of billions of dollars in future years and launch a monumental fight over education funding at the state Capitol.

Early childhood programs face cuts of more than $2 billion in the governor’s new budget proposal, including a 45% cut for the CalWORKS home visiting program , which provides supportive visits to about 3,000 low-income families following the birth of a baby.

He wants to reduce the Middle Class Scholarship program by $510 million and cut $550 million from a program that helps build and upgrade facilities for children in preschool and transitional kindergarten over the next two budget years.

Newsom called a decision to pause $1.4 billion planned to expand child-care availability over two years “difficult,” but a necessary trade-off in order to pay child-care workers higher wages.

“The state was finally making progress on childcare and early childhood initiatives which have been so ignored for so many years. To now cut back on that is disastrous for families and for our future,” said Ted Lempert, president of Children Now and a former California Assembly member.

What about healthcare?

Among proposed healthcare cuts is the elimination of more than $300 million in state and local public health funding — a move that “astounded” organizations like the County Health Executives Assn. of California, which pointed to COVID-19 pandemic woes that were worsened by underfunding and questioned if the state was backtracking.

Newsom also proposes eliminating hundreds of millions from programs meant to train and recruit health workers including nurses and social workers — both industries that have faced staffing shortages.

Healthcare providers who serve California’s low-income patients insured by Medi-Cal stand to lose extra pay meant to encourage healthcare facilities’ participation in the safety net program. The governor’s proposal takes more than $6 billion over multiple years meant for provider rate increases from a tax on managed healthcare organizations, known as the MCO tax, and uses it to support the Medi-Cal program in other ways.

Jodi Hicks, president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, said she was “deeply disappointed” by Friday’s budget plan, saying it will “jeopardize access to not just sexual and reproductive care but quality, affordable health care across the board for the nearly 15 million Californians who rely on Medi-Cal.”

Will prisons lose funding?

Newsom’s proposal includes savings from the newly announced deactivation of 46 housing units at 13 state prisons, which would save $80.6 million. This comes as California’s prison population has declined by nearly 25% since 2019 and as the state prepares for the closure of its third prison, which Newsom said is now planned to close as early as November, five months ahead of schedule.

The governor said that, while he is interested in further reducing “the larger footprint” of the prison system, “we want to be mindful of labor concerns, community concerns and trends.” He also expressed concern about the possibility of unanticipated increases in prison populations . A measure that could appear on the November ballot calls for rolling back some criminal justice reforms that have helped reduce incarceration.

Will the plan hurt workers?

The April agreement between lawmakers and the governor included $762 million in savings by pausing hiring for vacant state jobs. Newsom’s updated proposal permanently deletes 10,000 open positions, which unions viewed as a potentially better option than furloughs or delaying planned salary increases to save money.

Details of a costly plan to hike pay for healthcare workers to at least $25 per hour are still to come, following months of negotiations between Newsom, unions and hospital leaders.

Newsom signed a bill last year that imposed a new industry minimum wage for California healthcare workers, but has voiced concerns about how fast the state can move on wages due to the deficit. His department estimated that the wage hikes could cost the state $2 billion in its first year of implementation — a figure that SEIU California, the union backing the measure, rushed to refute, urging hospitals to pay a bigger share of the costs.

Newsom was tight lipped on the details on Friday but said a deal is near.

“This budget will not be signed without that deal,” Newsom said Friday.

The budget proposal shared Friday does not include funding for a healthcare minimum wage increase, Palmer said.

What else could be coming?

Negotiations are under way in the Legislature to place as many as three bonds on the November ballot that would ask voters to approve borrowing money to pay for low-income housing, school construction projects and climate-related infrastructure for adapting to floods, fires and droughts. Newsom declined to answer a question about how many of those he would like to go on the ballot.

Newsom said the close-call he experienced in March when his Proposition 1 bond for mental health facilities passed by barely more than 50% has “sobered” conversations about how much voters are willing to support borrowing measures.

“The public wants to see results. They’re not interested in inputs, they’re not interested to talk about how much money we’re spending,” he said. “They deserve results and they demand results. And so when we’re out there promoting these bonds, we need to be mindful of that.”
